Nanaimo Mounties are investigating an incident at Westwood Lake where a male exposed himself to a female jogger. The incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the top of the hill by the bluffs. A 22-year-old female jog-

A would-be robber with a gun fled empty-handed after he was confronted by a liquor store clerk Thursday. The robbery attempt happened at the Pipers Liquor Express on Hammond Bay Road at about 11 p.m. when a man walked in and pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the register. A female clerk on duty thought the gun was a fake, refused to hand over the cash and got into a struggle with the suspect, who broke free and ran out the front door. The clerk was not injured. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 5-foot-7, 150 pounds and wearing a ski mask, blue hoodie with stripes, jeans, work boots and gloves. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said complying, observing and calling 911 is the safest course of action in a robbery. Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ketball hoop. “Hopefully it all fits,” she said, chuckling. She calls the event a neat idea. It never dawned on her that parking vehicles in prime real estate downtown “is kind of silly.” “The concept behind parking day [is] really to shed light on how we could maybe
better use prime space ... that is more conducive to being interactive and provides greater benefit to the community than parking a vehicle,” she said. Corry Hostetter, executive director of the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association, says for businesses directly in front of parking spaces, traditional use of the stalls can mean four people every two hours, but a miniature park could draw four to 15 people over the same amount of time. The association will be showcasing an idea for a ‘parklet’ at the event, as well as creating its own temporary space. The event will take place along Commercial Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Nanaimo organizations are looking to give people another reason to park it on Commercial Street. The City of Nanaimo is staging its first-ever Park(ing) Day this Friday (Sept. 19), a global event to show how ordinary parking stalls can be transformed into temporary public plazas. According to Chris Barfoot, the city’s culture and heritage coordinator, the idea started as an activist movement in San Francisco in 2005 to show alternative uses for car-only spaces. Now communities worldwide use the day to animate asphalt stalls. In Nanaimo, six organizations will take up the challenge, with plans to create an outdoor yoga studio, a children’s park and a mini library. Groups will have 60 minutes to build a public space, which will be open for two hours – the same amount of time vehicles are allowed to use the stall. “What we hope to do here in Nanaimo … is to encourage people to look at spaces in a different way and to see the possibilities of how they can be animated and ways that we can create these really interesting, inviting cultural spaces,” said Barfoot, adding gathering spaces don’t have to be huge parks or permanent structures and can be spontaneous. “A gathering place could be something temporary, it could last two hours, it can last one week ... but what it does is serves that purpose of being that gathering place.” The city’s parks, recreation and environment department plans to take up two stalls for an interpretive park and children’s playground for the inaugural Park(ing) Day. Recreation coordinator Gillian Goerzen has collected all the supplies, from Astroturf, to a slide, wading pool and bas-

Leach remembered as trailblazer Nanaimo’s first female mayor was remembered as a trailblazer, natural leader and mother during a celebration of life on Friday. More than 100 people, including local dignitaries, turned out to Beban Park to pay their respects to Joy Leach, who died from Alzheimer’s disease at age 72 on Aug. 25. Leach was a longtime school trustee and Nanaimo’s first and only female mayor. She defeated Frank Ney in 1990, serving one term on Nanaimo city council. Under her leadership, the municipality introduced a new watermetering system as a source of revenue for infrastructure projects, negotiated the location of the Nanaimo Parkway and started Imagine Nanaimo, a process that would lead to the first official
community plan. Politicians and family members shared stories of Leach, whom they called a fearless crusader and natural leader. Bill Holdom, former city councillor, said it was easy to be the tail on her coat while Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog recalled seeing her hand-in-hand with another female political contender, doing the work she could do given her diminished capacity with Alzheimer’s. “Even at the end of the best stage of capacity that life had given her, she was still fighting the good fight, doing something in a campaign along with another woman, an early feminist in this community,” Krog said. “This community is a better place because she never gave up.”

United Way fundraising boosts youth mental health programs
I
aNNual brEakfaSt kicks off campaign Thursday (sept. 18). By Chris Bush The News bulleTiN
The United Way’s annual kick-off breakfast will be hosted at Woodgrove Centre this year. The move to Woodgrove saves costs of renting a venue that can be applied to United Way. “Woodgrove’s been incredibly supportive of us,” said Signey Madden, United Way of Central and Northern Vancouver Island executive director. “They fundraised for many, many months and give thousands of dollars to the United Way and they were willing to donate the venue for us… Really we just wanted to put more money back into the community rather than spend it on a venue.” The mall’s location also make it more convenient
for supporters coming from Parksville and Qualicum. The campaign, which runs September through December, is the United Way’s biggest annual fundraiser. Last year the organization raised just under $700,000 in the central Island region. “We’re raising our target this year just a little bit in each of the main areas that we’re fundraising in, so we’re trying to raise over $700,000 this year,” Madden said. The United Way supports 28 programs that help 16,000 people in the central Island, but this year the focus will be on mental health issues, especially for children and teens. “Really, mental health is one of the biggest issues that we’re seeing and funding because there seems to be greater stress on families and kids,” Madden said. “There are a lot of mental health issues with children. Mental health issues with children and youth is a big piece that we’re all kind of grappling with and there maybe aren’t enough

How can we make sure people aren’t falling through the cracks?” The breakfast happens Thursday (Sept. 18) at 7 a.m. at Woodgrove Centre’s food court area, catered by Galloping Gourmet. Bruce Williams, of CTV Vancouver Island will emcee the event. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased online by visiting the United Way website at www. uwcnvi.ca or calling 250-5918731. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Police recover 30 stolen bicycles
Animal magnetism
Charges are pending against a 29-year-old man after a police search of his home in the 600 block of Railway Avenue Wed nesday turned up stolen items. Nanaimo RCMP’s Street Crimes Unit found more than 30 bicycles ranging from high-end mountain bikes to children’s bicycles. Electronics, computers and construction tools were also seized. Some of the more notable items seized from the home included a Zodiac, tent trailer, a compressor weighing more than 360 kilograms, an industrial weed trimmer, lawn motors, industrial welders, a power washer, snowblower and four firearms, which were not stolen, but were confiscated because they were stored unsafely. Nearly 60 grams of

heroin, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and marijuana were also found. The suspect was arrested at the scene and released afterward on a promise to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Nov. 16. Police are recommending charges of possession of stolen property and possession for the purpose of trafficking. “Investigators will need some time cataloguing the items, so we are asking the public to refrain from calling to inquire if any of the seized property is theirs,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “If the property was reported stolen and can be traced back to the owner, investigators will contact you.”

Testing begins on new pipeline The first phase of an estimated $18-million pipe upgrade project at the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre, off Hammond Bay Road, is nearly complete, according to the Regional District of Nanaimo. The first phase consists of replacement of land section pipe that is part of the Departure Bay outfall, according to Sean De Pol, regional district manager of wastewater services. Epoxy-coated steel pipe, 41 years old and reaching the end of its service life, was replaced by thermo-plastic lined reinforced concrete

be taken into consideration. Failing that, work would take place the following summer. The land outfall portion had a price tag of $3.5 million but saw $2 million covered by the federal gas tax fund and the remainder coming from taxation and development cost charge reserves. De Pol said he is hoping part of phase 2 would be covered by gas tax money as well. “We will likely have an opportunity to put an application in for that if that is decided as a priority for the RDN,” he said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

De Pol said the piping is fully installed and the contractor, Knappett Industries, will be testing to make sure everything is in order. “They have to design it to certain specs and they will be inspected to ensure that they’ve actually installed it as per the contract,” said De Pol. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in summer 2015 and will see replacement of marine pipe, which goes out to the Five Fingers Island area in the waters off of Nanaimo. The regional district recently awarded a $742,000 contract to Opus Dayton Knight to oversee the work, put out a tender and evaluate proposals. New technology a driving force We may think we need wearable technology – such as Google Glass or the new Apple Watch – and manufacturers would like us to think so, too. But the last thing we need in this day and age of multiple distractions is something else to divert our attention from the responsibilities of operating a vehicle. Most drivers would probably agree that erratic behaviour on the roads has not decreased over the past 20 years. Indeed, it appears we are now paying the price for past leniency in what seems to have emerged as current norms of driving – unsignalled turns and lane changes, sudden swerves within lanes or into the line of oncoming traffic, unexpected decreases in speed and failure to respond to traffic signals. Those who have ever wondered “what’s up with this guy?” have probably discovered, on closer approach, a driver juggling the wheel and a cup of coffee, glancing down at a text message, or with a cellphone clutched to his or her ear. Since they, clearly, don’t see themselves as part of a problem, it would be meaningless to tell them that, on average, 88 people a year die as a result of distracted driving provincewide. Similarly, it would probably mean little to those with such an undeveloped sense of self-preservation that current police fines could bend their pocketbooks by $167 for distracted driving to $368 for driving without due care and attention. So let these remarks be addressed to those of us who place a greater value on life. It’s time we demanded a much higher standard, and a much more stringent series of penalties for distracted driving that will anticipate the wave of new attention-grabbing technologies. While it would be nice to believe that all human beings will behave responsibly, given a new set of temptations, bitter experience demonstrates otherwise. If somebody can do something unwise, most likely somebody will do it. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

I grew up in the Nanaimo area and have always taken pride in the parkland and waterfront legacies fought for and won by residents and purchased by the city. Georgia Park might not look like much, but it belongs to us without condition and without restrictions. It has been used by the public for more than 100 years and long before the city bought and dedicated the green space as a park in the late 1940s. It’s also part of an overall waterfront network that we continue to build on and grow as we strive to enhance tourism and quality of life. As Coun. Fred Pattje said, public space is public space and we have it for a reason. It ought to be the most difficult thing to give up. This isn’t the first time our politicians have considered offering our waterfront to developers and it’s hard to understand why it’s given up so easily. This legacy was preserved for us and we have the opportunity to maintain it for the enjoyment of future generations. Prying it away from our hands should be the most difficult thing to do and if our council’s grip on green space is a little loose, then it should be left to residents to make the ultimate decision. Park isn’t for politicians to barter with. It belongs to the citizens of Nanaimo. Put the issue to referendum. news@nanaimobulletin.com

All of B.C. has stake in ferry sailings own this year – a testament to the Island’s incredible lure and value to visitors. Many more would come if fares were affordable. The province is pinning its hopes for B.C.’s economic future with dreams of riches in natural gas and oil pipelines. Wouldn’t it be better to also include support for a renewable and proven industry that already exists, and capitalize on what we’re already known for? B.C.’s tourism sector is an
industry of 18,000 mostly small businesses. Island tourism profits stay on the Island to help Island people – not off to a corporate head office elsewhere. Do we really want to just keep wasting the mindblowing cost of the 2010 Olympics where we successfully invited the world to see B.C., by keeping its crown jewel, Vancouver Island, as the most expensive thing on the menu?

Taxpayers can’t afford theatre expansion To the Editor,
Re: Councillors support $12-million Port Theatre expansion, Sept. 11. I see the City of Nanaimo has voted to blow some $4.6 million on an expansion of the Port Theatre. And those millions are just the up-front cost; who knows what it’ll cost us in the long run when it needs fixing, a new piano, or can’t support itself and needs a handout. The current Port Theatre still can’t fill its seats and had to request a substantial increase to its taxpayer-funded subsidy that it needs every year in order to operate. I sincerely hope an online vote, that was no doubt stacked by
supporters of the project, was not the only investigation council and city staff conducted in order to justify the expenditure. An online vote is by no means representative and can be easily rigged. We have tax hikes year after year, and more than enough small performance venues available to the city’s artists and visiting performers. How can anyone see this expansion as a good idea in this fiscal climate? I’m one of the city’s artists, and I’d rather see a stable tax rate, or god forbid lower taxes, than have yet another venue which I can’t fill or rent.

City’s south end isn’t all that bad
continue to enhance the property today. That was before the current bylaw was passed, but earlier tree protection measures were in place. As I recall, we were required to have a tree management plan, but apparently the city was prepared to give us the go-ahead to clear-cut the property if that was what we wanted. It doesn’t look as though much has changed. Baffling.
Re: South end’s renewal attracts attention, Sept. 4. Does the reporter even know what gentrification means? Gentrification is the upgrading of rundown urban neighbourhoods, thereby causing displacement of the resident poor. The south end is small and it’s not as bad as media likes to make it at times. But the Bulletin gentry still look down their self-righteous noses.

The resulting government tax revenue from new Island jobs and economic activity would be greater than the losses at the ferry ticket booth. Ferry fares have increased dramatically and ridership has dropped. This has to change before any more damage is done to our Island economy. Nearly 20 per cent of B.C.’s population lives on Vancouver Island, and Islanders have all contributed taxes to the mainland’s transportation infrastructure – things like the Sea to Sky Highway, the twinning of the Port Mann Bridge, the Coquihalla

t was the harmonies of John Lennon and Paul McCartney that made Vince Vaccaro fall in love. “I just remember hearing Day Tripper by the Beatles for the first time and just falling in love with rock ‘n’ roll and that whole sound,” Vaccaro recalled. “That was the beginning for me.” Since then the Vaccaro’s love for music has taken him to the golden beaches of Australia and across Canada. On Thursday (Sept. 18) Vaccaro will be performing at the Queen’s. “I am just going to come and do the best that I can do and connect with people and play the songs from the heart,” Vaccaro said about his upcoming show in the Nanaimo. “That’s what I always try to do.” Vaccaro was born in Montreal, but has spent the majority of his life living in British Columbia. He began playing the guitar when he was eight years old and has never looked back. “I’ve been playing music since I was high school, or even younger than that,” Vaccaro said. Since becoming a regular touring musician a number of years ago, he has shared the stage with a respectable list of bands, which include Mumford and Sons, Weezer, City and Colour, the Sheepdogs, Bedouin Soundclash, Matthew Good, and Jets Overhead. Vaccaro originally began as a rock singer ,but has become more of an acoustic singer-songwriter.

Island songstress finds wind in her sails

HAYLEY SALES’S new record will feature Carl Marsh and Qualicum Beach jazz musician Phil Dwyer. By NIcholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
Throughout her career, singer-songwriter and actress Hayley Sales has ridden out the highs and lows as if they were just another wave in the Pacific Ocean. “In my opinion, the people who find success are the people who are able to process all the negative feedback and kind of press the reset button,” Sales told the News Bulletin. “There are different phases in my life where I get negative feedback and then it is all great for a year. It is just this cycle that you have to rise above.” On Saturday (Sept. 20) the award-win-
ning singer will be performing at the Nanaimo Har vest Festival, which takes place in the Old City Quarter. “I always love having the opportunity to come back to the Island to play shows,” Sales said. She was born in Washington, D.C., but spent the majority of her early life in Portland, where she attended The Northwest Academy and had big dreams. What she didn’t dream of was her parents moving from the Beaver State to a farm near Qualicum Beach. “I was uncontrollably in tears,” Sales

recalled about the day she found out she was moving to Canada. After a year on the Island, Sales moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. However, things didn’t work out the way she hoped. “I think I was too young to be com-
pletely on my own in that city ... You’re so impressionable and you’re on your own,” Sales recalled. “At one point I was told I needed to lose weight so I stopped eating.” As a result, Sales lost her voice and was forced to return to Vancouver Island to recover.
“That was an interesting experience because that has always been my identity and then to have it gone for a good solid year was a growing experience,” Sales said. Fortunately for Sales, the tides began to take a turn in the right direction. “I was lucky it all healed and I got signed to Universal within the next year,” Sales said. She has released two albums, Sunseed and When the Bird Became a Book, under Universal Records and is putting the finishing touches on her newest album, which will be released later this year. The record, which isn’t titled yet, features Carl Marsh and Qualicum’s Phil Dwyer. “I wanted to find a way to draw my worlds together,”
Sales said about the upcoming record. “It’s more cinematic. There is a bit more influence from Judy Garland and the singers in that era, the 1930s, that I kind of had steered away from in the first two records. I am embracing that a bit more.” Today, Sales has won numerous awards as a musician and plays Shelly on the television show Cedar Cove. When she looks back at her career, she credits her relocation to Vancouver Island for a large part of her success. “In many ways I don’t think I would be where I am if I hadn’t been nudged to move here with my family,” she said. Open house encourages do-si-do’ing By NIcholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
All join hands and circle wide, spread right out like an old cow hide. That’s exactly what will be happening next weekend when the Travelling Squares hold their square dancing open house. The Travelling Squares open house takes place on Sept. 27 at Wellington Hall and will be excellent opportunity for anyone thinking of getting into square dancing. “The open house night will be a social for people to meet and mix,” Travelling Squares spokeswoman Wendie Harrington said. “We usually have coffee and tea and goodies to serve at the end of it.” The open house is open to anyone of all ages and no experience is needed. “As long as you can walk, you can dance,” she said. It is also designed to show residents of the Harbour City that square dancing is a great way to get exercise and have fun. “Everybody, at least I think, has a preconceived idea about square dancing as this thing from the olden days where they had the twangy Western music and ever ybody dresses up funny,” Harrington said.. “We dance to the Eagles, we dance to Elvis. There is a wide variety of music used.” The free open house takes place on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Wellington Hall, 3922 Corruna Ave. A regular dance will follow the open house. The Canada Food Guide recommends on average, 7-10 servings of fruits & vegetables per day. At Power House, one meal, & beverage equates to more than the minimal recommended daily serving. TONI JEFFRIES Fresh fruits & vegetables, leafy greens are rich in dietary fibre, containing naturals vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and living enzymes. We have been passionately created to provide the freshest, nutrient dense, VEGAN food to our community, while educating, and empowering people to be aware of the effects of food consumption on their health, & their environment. To be cognizant of what we put in our mouths, sourcing foods that feed our bodies containing the highest nutritional content, as we have been conditioned to carelessly consume refined packaged food products, which are depleted of natural nutrients & weigh heavily on our bodies, and our earth. We support the 100 mile diet, back yard gardening and wild Crafting, as the highest nutritional yield from our food comes from freshly harvested produce. Once picked from the field, the sooner we consume it, the higher the nutrients our body receives. We are passionate about RAW Food, as our raw creations are bursting with vitamins, minerals, fibre & living enzymes! Consuming foods in their natural raw state provides pure vital energy to fuel us throughout the day. We encourage you to be creative with raw foods in your home! There are ample online resources to inspire you!

My backyard looks like a lake as soon as it rains. When its not raining, my yard feels spongy, and I can see moisture in my crawl space. Is there a way to fix this?
I’m having a terrible time sleeping. Is there anything you can do?
Absolutely. There are a number of different drainage options that can eliminate the accumulation of water in your yard and ensure your crawl space remains dry. A simple ditch to direct the flow of water away from the troubled spot may be the solution in some yards. In others, the installation of buried drain pipe bedded in drain rock will catch the accumulation of water and discharge it safely away before it causes damage. These systems require proper design to avoid causing drainage problems in another area of your yard. Additional waterproofing of your house foundation can be accomplished by sealing the exterior concrete with a waterproofing membrane, along with upgrading your house perimeter drains which are designed to keep the foundation dry. A properly drained yard and foundation will provide you with the assurance of staying dry. Now is the time to tackle these repairs as the rainy season is just around the corner. VI OUTDOOR offers complimentary drainage assessments and solutions for your home, yard, and business.

My eyes are often dry feeling, but sometimes water. Will drops DR. PAUL GENEAU help? When the eyes are overly dry, they may water reflexively. It may help to use artificial tear drops to prevent the watering. Dry eyes are very common, but can have many underlying causes. Tear drops alone may not be adequate. A thorough examination by a doctor of optometry can provide a customized treatment program so that you can be as comfortable as possible. Make an appointment today!
Can Hypnotherapy help me control my constant worrying?
“What if this happens... what if that...” is the typical thinking of the chronic worrier. All of us may have experienced from time to time a bit of TRACY L. THOMPSON healthy concern over a matter, which is very normal and even a good thing. Let’s face it, insurance companies would go broke if we didn’t have this type of healthy concern to look after ourselves for the ‘what if’s’ in life. But when worrying becomes out of control and is now interfering with your health and your life, you know something’s just not right. Through the use of hypnotherapy we help people change their negative thinking patterns of their worrying, anxious thoughts and behaviours. We do this by first of all by relaxing the person’s body and mind completely and then using hypnotic techniques provide them with ways to solve their anxiety through visual imagery, positive metaphors, and statements. It helps to remember some simple repetitive words for your sub-conscious mind to take on as a positive automatic behaviour so we often suggest saying to yourself, “each and every day I feel calm, confident, and in control and I like this very much.” For more information about this, please contact us for a free consultation.

What is a “hotchpot clause”?
bankruptcy
It is a clause we include in a Will when we want to ensure that any previous TIAH M. WORKMAN loans to a residual beneficiary are considered at the time of distribution of the estate. For example, if you have two children and loaned “A” $100,000 and wanted to make sure that the loan was taken into account at the time of your death, you would include the hotchpot clause. If your estate would otherwise be worth $500,000 so that each child would receive $250,000, the hotchpot clause would mean including the $100,000 as an asset of the estate at the time of distribution. The estate would be considered to have a value of $600,000 so that “B” would then receive $300,000 as half of the estate and “A” the remaining $200,000.

Pain at the very base of the spine at the coccyx, or “tailbone”, is a common problem encountered in chiropractic practice DR. KAREN MATTERN The most common cause is lack of normal movement in the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. This can result from a fall on the tailbone, prolonged driving or sitting, occupational strain, pregnancy, or postural habits. When the sacroiliac joints function normally, the tailbone is tucked under while sitting. If this mechanism is blocked, the tip of the coccyx takes all the pressure when sitting. The first step in treating pain in the coccyx should be a spinal evaluation. A course of chiropractic treatments often resolves such problems without the need for surgery or the prospect of living with the pain indefinitely. If you suffer from any painful condition of the low back or tailbone call our office at 250-758-7022 or email drkarin@ shaw.ca

Normally one of two things: 1) Breaker fatigue, internal weakening of the circuit breaker causing it to trip before maximum load, or the breaker is doing what it was designed to do, interrupt the flow of current before it reaches a dangerous level. A 15 amp circuit is designed to allow a maximum continuous load of 1440 watts. 2) You may also have a short circuit. If the breaker trips immediately or if a flash or sparks are visible at the panel when you attempt to reset the breaker then this is the case. If you are having breaker issues, contact Mazzei Electric and we can diagnose your problem.

Absolutely. Sleep is a key component of a DR. TONIA WINCHESTER healthy body and mind. Adults needs about 7-8 hours per night. Aim to get to bed before 10 pm. Two common types of sleep troubles are “sleep onset insomnia,” trouble falling asleep, and “sleep maintenance insomnia,” trouble staying asleep. Both can be related to stress, hormone imbalances, food allergies, and low blood sugar. Having a healthy pre-sleep routine is essential. An hour before bed turn off all electronics, have a warm bath, or enjoy a cup of chamomile tea. Deep belly breathing for 11 minutes can triple melatonin while you sleep, and is a great way to wind down. Often I’ll suggest a small fat and protein dense snack such as a handful of nuts to prevent blood sugar from dropping. I also have good success with acupuncture on my patients.

The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act provides that a lender of a consumer loan (mortgage or car loan) can not enforce its security over the secured house or vehicle unless you are actually in default under the terms of the loan. You’re filing for bankruptcy does not constitute an act of default. However, you should be aware that as the law stands now, continuing to make the payments for a period of time could result in a “reaffirmation” of the loan agreement in view of your conduct even if you have not re-signed it after the date of bankruptcy. This would create a new post bankruptcy debt if you later decided to walk away from the house or car and there was a shortfall on the foreclosure etc. As such, the time to decide on whether or not to continue making payments should be within the first couple of months of the date of your bankruptcy.

B.C. Coaches’ Week includes full slate of certification courses Coaches’ week isn’t just a time to honour coaches, it’s also a time to create some new ones. To m a r k B . C . Coaches’ Week, PacificSport is hosting a
full slate of courses on Vancouver Island – including several free certification courses – starting Saturday (Sept. 20), and there is space to sign up. “Normally they’re
totally sold out every year,” said Kevin Lindo, PacificSport V.I.’s athlete and coach services coordinator. “For some reason it’s very slow … so we really want
to push and get the numbers filled up.” Most of the free National Coaching Cer tification Program courses are being held at Campbell River and Port
Alberni, but since the courses cost $125 at other times of year, they may still appeal to Nanaimoites. There are numerous coaching courses being offered in Nanaimo
that cost $10-$75. PacificSport can host the free courses thanks to funding from ViaSport and

What is my home Comparative worth? Market Analysis
If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIM WAIT can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. How can you tell if the CMA you’ve been given is worth more than the piece of paper it’s written on? Call me at 713-1223 or email tim@timwait.com and I will let you know.

John I’ve been to your store and others looking for bedroom furniture, one of your competitors JOHN ROGERS told me that a lot of your furniture is only assembled in BC and not really made in BC? Is that why your prices are so much lower than theirs? I always laugh when I hear this and I hear it all the time. I visit the factories we deal with all the time to make absolutely sure that they aren’t hiding things like that. If we say “Made in BC” it’s made in BC! The low prices come from the fact that I hate sales and gimmicks as much as I hate particle board. I just want people to have a great product at a fair price every day. 1707 Bowen Rd., Nanaimo

Yes, as you would be with any surface. Bacteria will be present regardless of what your countertops are made of; however, granite is more sanitary than butcher block or laminate. We suggest that you use an anti-bacterial cleaner from time to time to kill any bacteria that may be present from day to day use.

I know I should have my denture replaced, but I do not want to go through a long adjustment period again.
The first time is always the hardest. You are a pro now. You have learned the basics about eating, speaking and wearing a denture. There may be some adjustment, but it will probably be shorter and easier than the first time. If you have been wearing the same dental prosthesis for more than 5 years without having it checked, you are running unnecessary risks. Too many people believe that dentures are good for 20 years. Nothing could be further from the truth! Prolonged use of ill-fitting dentures can irritate the gums, tongue and cheek, and even cause the ridges of your mouth to shrink or develop loose pliable tissue to the point where it will be almost impossible to fit you with normal dentures. Your ability to chew may decrease and your face may acquire deep aging lines and wrinkles. When you look at the big picture, the temporary adjustment period is not so bad. For any questions regarding your denture needs, contact Carson Denture Clinic to book a free consultation.

VIU Mariners keep footing I TEAMS BOTH earn one win on weekend.
The VIU Mariners soccer teams both won on the weekend to keep pace in the PacWest. Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s teams were home all weekend at Merle Logan Field. The men defeated the Douglas Royals 3-1 on Saturday and then tied the Kwantlen Eagles 0-0 the next day. VIU’s women fell 2-1 to Douglas, then blanked Kwantlen 4-0. VIU coach Bill Merriman said his guys
played really well against the Royals. Blaze Roberts, Renan Rebelatto and Jordan de Graaf scored goals. For the VIU ladies, Ceilidh Glennie scored in the loss and Madison Leigh, Carli Rey, Katie Rodgers and Samantha R o d g e r s s c o re d in the win. Shelby Walker recorded the shutout. “We’re getting better and better each game, we can still improve, though, as we move into the crucial part of our schedule,” said Anup Kang, M’s coach, in a press release. VIU’s soccer teams are on the road the next two weeks.

Sun outshine Raiders to sweep season series BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Raiders couldn’t keep the Sun down for four quarters. Nanaimo’s V.I. Raiders were defeated 19-7 by Kelowna’s Okanagan Sun on Saturday afternoon at Caledonia Park. The B.C. Football Conference matchup was a onescore football game much of the way. “I hate losing, but it’s not a step back as long as we’re continually improving…” said Brian Ridgeway, V.I. coach. “I personally think we could have won this game. It was there available for us. We just have to make enough plays at the right time.”

Okanagan controlled the first quarter, gaining yards on the ground and scoring a short rushing touchdown. V.I. made it close late in the half on a 15-yard TD catch by Arthur Fabbro. Okie got some insurance late, connecting on a 33-yard passing TD. The Sun D was able to wear down the Raiders’ pass-centric offence as the second half went along. Okie finished with seven sacks on V.I. quarterback Liam O’Brien. “They do play a little bit different of a defence, so it does mess with the reads a little bit,” said Ridgeway. “But we’ve practised it enough … to know that the plays are there. We just have to trust it and execute.”

Late goal lifts Buccaneers to victory The Nanaimo Buccaneers came through in the clutch to beat the Kerry Park Islanders. The city’s junior B hockey team defeated the visiting Isles by a 3-2 score on Thursday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre thanks to Will McNamara’s tiebreaking goal with less than three minutes left. “It was a little close for comfort, but I thought the boys worked hard to get that win…” McNamara said. David Osborne and Jared Fedosoff also scored and Liam Young earned the win in goal.
The next night up Island, Nanaimo lost to the Campbell River Storm 3-2 in overtime. McNamara and Trent Bell scored and goalie Greg Maggio made 54 saves to steal a point for his team. On Saturday, also on the road, the Bucs beat the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 2-1. Nolan Richardson and McNamara, with another game-winner, scored goals and Brandon Ward was the winning goalie. GAME ON … The Bucs host the Storm Thursday (Sept. 18) at 7:15 p.m. at the NIC.
