Charlie Newman leads a group across the finish line at the Terry Fox Run. The numbers were impressive for the 2014 run on Sunday, September 14. Seventy eight participants, and 26 volunteers made the annual run another success in Lake Cowichan which raised a total of $1,535 for the cause. The event has become a community family one at the lake with runners, walkers and kids on bikes joining in the event and then staying to enjoy hamburgers cooked up by the folks at Jakes at the Lake.

Council ponders buskers at town square Ross Armour

LAKE COWICHAN GAZETTE

The idea and prospect of buskers performing at the new Renfrew Town Square could well become a reality sooner rather than later. If that comes about, Lake Cowichan will have Coun. Bob Day to thank. Day instigated the idea to the council table at last week’s Finance and Administration Committee meeting at the town hall, seeking to provide as much regular colour and entertainment possible for the town square when it eventually opens next month. The move came after a discussion was

prompted by Day regarding a Public Use Facility Policy for the Renfrew Town Square. “This is a different facility from the ones we currently hold,” said Day. “It is designed for small events without taking up parking space. I’m wondering if we’ll need to coincide for allowances with things like buskers. There could be auditions, fees, things like that to go along with it and we could also look at a maximum amount of vendors per day.” But according to town staff, there may not be that much work needed to do to allow Day’s vision to come to fruition with a similar policy already in place. “We do have a policy for groups such

Come July 2015, the Town of Lake Cowichan and the Ohtaki Twinning Committee will once again take a delegation to the town’s sister village in Japan and the trip is already proving to be a big hit with local students. At last week’s Ohtaki Twinning Committee meeting at the town hall, it was confirmed that the committee has already received 10 applicants to go to Japan next summer, with some applicants applying later than others, and this is already before the September 24 deadline to apply to go. Committee member Kristy Convery confirmed the fundraising process for that is already in full swing. “We have $6,000 in the bank,” said Convery. “We are in the middle of a metal drive right now which is wrapping up soon and then we will have a bottle drive (above picture).” Convery is all for continued applications but is concerned about the fundraising process of those coming late into the game.

“The kids that come in late would have to catch up,” she said. “Some of us are already doing 90% of the work. There are some families that genuinely can’t help us out and that is obviously out of our control.” Mayor Ross Forrest, who chaired the meeting, sympathized with Convery but said it’s important as many people get the chance to go to Ohtaki as possible. “I know the latest two applicants are a little late but we want to see as many people given the opportunity as possible,” said the mayor. “We could cap the amount of people that go at some stage. We don’t want to hamper you raising your money. There is a deadline of September 24 and we are not going for a while anyway.” The delegation travelling to Japan next summer will depart Lake Cowichan on July 6 and get to Ohtaki on July 8. Also at the meeting, the itinerary for the Japanese delegation arriving in Lake Cowichan this October was finalized, with a Ohtaki delegation of 28 being here from October 4 to 8. The trip for the delegation will include the trademark banquet which will once again be held at Centennial Hall, visiting Ohtaki Park in town, a night at Duncan Lanes, a day in Chemainus looking at murals and riding in horse-driven carriages, a day at Woodgrove Mall in Nanaimo as well as quality homestay time in Lake Cowichan amongst other things. Also included is a day at Lake Cowichan School, but committee member Wanda Wiersma fears that may have to get cancelled if the teachers’ strike is still ongoing at that time. “We need to think that if the kids don’t go back to school, that’s another full day and even if they do, is the school going to be prepared for the Ohtaki kids?” she said. Forrest understood Wiersma’s point. “It will make it difficult for sure. We need to have a backup plan,” said the mayor. Member Laurie Johnson said another full day with their homestays may be beneficial for the Ohtaki kids in developing friendships and Coun. Jayne Ingram, who also sits on the committee, suggested a trip to the creek. “The Salmonid Enhancement Society has invested in new upgrades to the creek for the salmon enhancement project and that has been recently finished,” she said. Forrest thought Ingram’s idea was a good one. “The salmon enhancement was part of the original concept of this exchange,” said Forrest. “It was part of it at the very beginning. It would just mean a little bit of time but at no cost. “It’s really fun when you see the kids from Japan and the kids from here playing together, it’s nice to see for sure. The itinerary looks really good.”

Education Centre manager says beach & nearby trails are maintained regularly Ross Armour

Lake CowiChan Gazette

A recent letter to the editor regarding alleged “non-upkeep” of a local trail prompted a detailed discussion at the town hall last week. That discussion came about at the Town of Lake Cowichan’s Cowichan Lake Education Centre, Lakeview and Fire Department Committee meeting last Tuesday after a letter was written to the Gazette by Gail Sprung, owner of Nature Walk Bed and Breakfast. In the letter, Sprung discussed the trail which leads up to the floating walkway at Lakeview Park Beach. “I was appalled at the non-upkeep of the trail, the peeling of the park benches on the floating walkway. Now I am ashamed to direct [my visitors] onto what could be a lovely walk,” wrote Sprung. “Who, why or what stops this town from sprucing it up for tourists. They are the ones that bring revenue to this town. It’s a disgrace to see those benches with peeling paint.” But according to CLEC and Lakeview manager Dalton Smith, Lakeview Park is kept in good condition and very few complaints are received about it and its nearby surroundings and amenities. “Lakeview Park and the beach is probably the busiest park that we have in the Town of Lake Cowichan,” said Smith. “We have five to six people maintaining it to a high standard up to 20 hours a day. Unfortunately we can’t go to the standards of Gordon Bay Provincial Park. “Every half hour, somebody cleans the washrooms. The beach and the

peeling on a bench, he’s just glad it’s there. But we do want this upgraded too and we are on top of it.” Mayor Ross Forrest believes that sometimes expectations are too high on smaller trails when situated close to bigger trails and parks. “The Trans Canada Trail is 10 feet wide and you can walk three dogs along it. Maybe expectations are too high for wilderness trails,” said the mayor. “We have to have an inventory for these trails. They are kept to a standard.” Smith agreed with the mayor. “New signage is coming and it should be better,” he said. “It already says use at your own risk on the waterfront walkway. This is only the second comment I’ve had about that trail in a very long time that is negative. We can’t overreact to this, although I am not going on the defensive here.” Coun. Bob Day, who chaired the meeting, said beach upgrades will come about but it may take time. “We have talked about upgrading the beach facilities there,” said Day. “It will take money and it will take time. My question is do we have the budget to keep maintaining the walkway? It might need $10,000 over the next five years as standards are going up.” Smith tried to look on the bright side. “The walkway is built like a tank and has cost is very little in maintenance, pretty much nothing,” he said. “Nevertheless we have noticed something that may cost us several thousand dollars come the spring.”“We’ll toss that idea around for the next week and talk about it at our next weekend at some point on the agenda,” said Day.

grass is kept clean. We’ve just ordered five new loads of sand which we budgeted for as it’s what we can afford. Lots of people use the walkways and that letter is the first complaint we have had in a very long time but it just keeps us on our toes.” Smith says that there are some hazards along the trail in question but parts of that trail were closed down to prevent safety concerns. “A couple of trees go over it and are in a bad position so that was looked at it in the spring and we closed them down. We knew that trail couldn’t be wheelchair accessible when we built it. Everything can’t be that. It is all under control anyway.” Coun. Jayne Ingram asked Smith how soon work could be done to tidy up the benches. “Tourism increased this year so perhaps the benches should be fixed at the start of spring to look nice for Dalton Smith the people visiting us. Maybe this could be added to public works’ list,” she said. Smith remained defiant. “One man recently told me that he’s not bothered by a little bit of paint

Letters to the editor: Garden enthusiast Austin asks whether town needs community garden or not COMMUNITY GARDEN – NEED OR NOT?

The recent story in this paper about a community garden being proposed at Centennial Field has sparked a lot of comments around town. Firstly, why would anyone consider another community garden when other proposed gardens haven’t been successful? Is there truly a need for a community garden in Lake Cowichan area? Several years ago I was part of a group that proposed a garden beside the Seniors’ Centre. It was reported back to us that the Seniors’ didn’t want it there and the Town didn’t want it there either. The town offered us another spot which wasn’t conducive to what was proposed so most of the group lost interest. A couple of years later another group was formed and the Town said we could use part of the Community Services parking lot close to the Info Centre for raised beds. Members of the group wanted to go to local businesses and ask for donations and I thought that we should find out who wanted garden beds and do some ground work ourselves before we did that. The project was presented to the Seniors’, a story was in the paper, posters went up at Community Services and the apartments targeting people we thought would want to grow their own organic produce. Everyone we contacted said we needed a community garden in town and said they would support it, but other than the four people in our group, no one stepped forward to say they wanted to have a garden plot themselves or help build them. About 3 years ago the former L.C.S.S. was given a grant to update the greenhouse and build several raised garden beds.

Stories about the garden beds were in this paper more than once. People were asked to come forward if they wanted a plot and only a couple of people did, but they did not follow through. The school then asked that a local group take on the managing of the garden, to rent plots out to the public and care for it during the summer. No group wanted to take it on so, there it sits. Drive by the back of the school and look for yourselves. Councillor Day, a driving force behind this current proposed garden, is certainly aware of the community garden and green house at the former L.C.S.S. because the town wrote a letter supporting them for the grant as did the Lake Bloomer’s Garden Club and Communities in Bloom. There are also three raised beds at the Anglican Church that a couple of us planted, weeded and watered for a couple of years. Information about the beds was spread about the community and written up in this paper but the response was abysmal. So, is there a need for a community garden in Lake Cowichan? As well, the proposed site is certainly not very accessible to seniors or to those who don’t own a vehicle. So, I ask, what demographic are they looking at; will those in need step forward and commit to a plot; who will pay for the water usage? I am a great proponent of Community Gardens. They are a positive trend right now, but first a need must be established with firm commitment from locals who will be involved and actually bring the project to fruition. A really high chain-link fence needs to be built around the garden too or the bears and deer will have a field day. Carolyne Austin

In 1946, after service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW2, locally born Nels Olson found a job as a faller in the local logging industry retiring about forty years later. To read more of Olson’s interesting recollections of his many years working in the local forest industry, check out the website MOSAIC of Forestry (a story by Nels Olson)

Call or drop in to the Gazette for more details 250.749.4383

Does spending your entire ninety years here make you a pioneer? It sure does if your name is Nels Olson; born here ninety years ago Rolli (Sept 14, 1924) just Gunderson two weeks after his parents arrived from their native Sweden. PAGES OF HISTORY Nels was the second child of Olof and Gulle Olson who, along with their four year old son George, no sooner settled in their temporary home along the railway tracks at Charter Siding (near the present day Skutz Falls turnoff) when Nels was born. Not long after Olof began building a new home for his family here in the village on the corner of Riverside Drive and Wellington East. With lots of hard work, he soon completed the small home for his family. Unfortunately the house “burnt to the ground in 1933 ” (Source: The Olof and Gulle Olson story by Nels Olson, 1993) so Olof bought a floathouse home at Camp 6 (Caycuse) where he was employed, meanwhile “building a new house back at the old site” on Riverside Drive in Lake Cowichan (still there although much larger and much altered). One of many hard working Swedes who left their homeland to pursue a better life in Canada, Olof found work as a faller (the most dangerous job in the woods) at various logging camps in the Cowichan Lake area. During those early years, while Olaf lived in camp during the weeks, Gulle - who could not yet speak English - was left home alone in a strange, new country, to care for their sons who by then included third child George, born in 1931. It was hard work scratching out a living tending the cows,

pigs and chickens they had acquired while also raising the children. Added to this was the monumental task of clearing the property of the trees and large stumps. These were difficult times but they, like all successful early residents and pioneers, worked their fingers to the bone eventually carving out a decent life for themselves and their family. After leaving school son Nels worked in the local sawmills before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force as a mechanic in 1943. After three years’ service he returned to Lake Cowichan where he “joined [his] father and brothers falling and bucking in the local forest industry”, a job he continued for the rest of his working life. In the late 1940’s Nels and local girl June Eckert were married then “settled down to enjoy life”. They were the only couple who attended school and later married, in the same building (the first schoolhouse which was later converted to the first United Church). Perfectly suited to each other, they lived a happy life together with their four children, Colleen, Terry, Jody and Becky who all remained in this area. In early 1960 June and Nels, along with the Davies, bought the Lakeside Cabins on North Shore Road, renaming it the Castaway. Seven years later Ross and Joan Webb bought out the Davies and joined the Olsons in running the popular resort before selling it in 1973. That year Nels and June bought a lovely home on the shores of Cowichan Lake where they happily lived for many years. In 1983, after nearly forty years “in the bush”, Nels retired. Presently Nels, widowed some years ago, lives a comfortable life with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren nearby. Over his long life he has more than earned the love and respect of countless friends, neighbours and residents of his much-loved hometown of Lake Cowichan, and far beyond. The legacy that began when his hard working Swedish immigrant parents who settled here ninety years ago, continues on.

Torrential rains caused most players to head in for an early lunch at the clubhouse. Only a few foursomes braved the deluge to finish their games. This was disappointing as we were hosting a dozen golfers from Saltspring for an Interclub Match. Although the match was shortened, prizes were still awarded, with John McCormick and Glen Richardson on the winning team. Grant Parr was not bothered by the rain as he picked up both Closest to the Pin prizes. Frank Fraser, Gerry Janzen and Rocky Wise shot birdies and Leo Tardiff got a Chip In Par. Inside Golf Magazine has proclaimed March Meadows a Hidden Gem in its annual rating of B.C.’s Top Golf Courses. We were back to incredible late summer weather, and the course certainly lived up to this description. Mark Kloske fired a 77 to take Low Gross and Jug Kalar won Low Net with a 67. Jim Peterson and Tom Clarkson collected the K.P.’s. Birdie prizes were claimed by John McCormick, Kalar, Tom Denninger, John Barger and Kloske with two. Clarkson and Lance Lingren made Sandy Pars. Duffer O’Doule says, “Every time a golfer makes a Birdie, he must subsequently make two triple Bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibriumof the universe”. Because the new transmission reduces weight and friction, the fuel economy has improved by 16 per cent, which is an amazing accomplishment in such a small car. Susan Brown

August 20, 1952 - August 27, 2014 On August 27th, 2014 Susan Nadine Brown passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Sue is survived by her son Brett Horwood (Trudy) and her special granddaughters Abby and Elizabeth. Sue’s friends were very important to her and she was known for her kindness and sense of humour. Sue loved mystery novels, movies and a good card game (especially bridge!) A celebration of life will be held this Saturday, September 20th 1:00pm at the Lake Cowichan Curling Lounge. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Walter Daniel Knowles White March 10, 1930 – September 12, 2014

Walter passed away suddenly at home on September 12, 2014. He was born in Kingston, ON and moved to Meath Park, SK and from there to BC. He walked the streets with his brother Lloyd looking for work and found it in a furniture factory putting cribs together. When that job finished he found work in the forestry industry for 44 years. When he retired he was treated to a helicopter ride which he enjoyed and appreciated. Walter came from a large family and was known to locals as the “chicken man as he used to sell eggs as his hobby. He also delivered local papers when his daughter went off to college. Walter is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Linda. Walter was a real family man and loved his wife and children; Aldena (Ian) Kovacich and their children Jersey, Alexa, Cameron and Joshua; Celina Bewcyk (Michael) and their children Miah and Marcus; Enid Eriksson (Myron Jones) and their children Hannah and Freya and Verlie Hansen and her children Velvet (son Teagan), Danial (son Eithen), Sierra, Micheal and Matthew. He is also survived by seven siblings Lloyd, Mary Ellen, Robert, May, Susan, Lee and Donald and predeceased by three siblings Frederick, Lavina, Jeannetta. There will be an open house to come and share stories and memories of Walter at 106 Eldred Road, Lake Cowichan on Friday, September 19 from 1:00 – 4:00PM. “We love you dad and you will always be remembered In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the The Diabetes Association, SPCA, Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society or Sons of Norway. Online condolences may be made at www. hwwallacecbc.com

As well, 50 per cent of any item purchased off the menu will go to the Smith-Brown family (not including alcoholic beverages). • Honeymoon Bay Market

photo submitted

Don’t forget to take in the Honeymoon Bay Market while the weather is still cooperating. The market takes place ever Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. through until Thanksgiving. Look for in-season, local produce, sewing, baking, preserves, arts and crafts, and more.

A team of local carpet bowlers have recently come back home with a silver medal from the national championships. The team, based out of Duncan, was lead by team captain Jean McIntyre, 76, from Lake Cowichan and won a silver medal at the 55+ event held in Edmonton, August 27 to 30. Also on the team were Egon Gron (late 80’s), George Capella (92) and Connie Parker (75). Parker is the mother of Linda Blatchford who works for Cowichan Lake Recreation based out of the sports arena in town. The team actually tied for gold, with another team from British Columbia, but lost a four-end overtime playoff to determine the overall winner, resulting in a silver medal. Also, Capella notably was the oldest competitor at the tournament.
