Students ‘squeeze’ opportunity from strike Travis Paterson News staff

Dad on duty Michael Simpson, a CRD Hazmat emergency responder and Central Saanich firefighter, takes a time out with daughter Kaycee, 3, during the Saanich Fire Department’s open house last Saturday at Fire Hall No. 2 on Elk Lake Drive. The biennial event brought out an estimated 2,000 people for a day of free food, firefighter demonstrations and fun. See more photos on pages B1 and B3.

Sam Laramee squeezes one mini shampoo bottle after another and pokes fun at his mundane, repetitive task. “It’s this or school, and there’s no school,” says the 14-year-old, laughing. As Laramee awaits word on an end to the teachers’ strike and the beginning of his student life at Reynolds secondary, the teen is using his free time to volunteer with Disaster Aid’s Soap for Hope program, based out of an Esquimalt warehouse. On this day, four would-be students are repackaging slightly used soap, shampoo and conditioner – donated from 50 hotels across Vancouver Island – to create hygiene kits that will be shipped as far away as Ghana and Croatia, and as close to home as Rock Bay Landing. The current 13-litre shampoo batch is destined for Thailand. “It makes me feel good that I can help people in other countries just by squeezing shampoo bottles,” says Maya McIntyre, 11. Maya’s mother, Anne, is in her fourth month as the executive director of Disaster Aid Canada. Anne has recruited Maya six times already, but is also fielding requests from the community for student volunteers. PLEASE SEE: Strike brings unique work, Page A3

“We like to have students come in once a month, but during the strike Maya and a few other have come in each week,” Anne says. “And I just had a call for a group of 10 kids to come in, so I’ve booked them a date. It’s a fabulous response.” Sam’s 16-year-old brother, Jonah Laramee, also at Reynolds, might not have volunteered if it wasn’t for the strike. “I’ll probably come back even if school starts. It’s a great cause and it’s great work experience for me,” Jonah says. Other volunteers include Jim Force, president of the Rotary Club of Oak Bay, who stood in the corner, using a manual mixer to mash partial soap bars into a giant vat. The mash is melted, cooled in trays, cut into roughly edged bars, and stamped with the Disaster Aid logo. Edward Norton would be proud. Products continue to flow in from hotels, and with Global Handwashing Day looming on Oct. 15, the push is one to prepare and distribute soap products, Anne says. “One of the challenges is letting people know we have these products, as Soap For Hope only recently started supplying local shelters and outreach

Saanich News is being honoured with an Historic Front Pages award from Newspapers Canada. The one-time competition was created in recognition of the sesquicentennial of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Canadian Confederation. The News received an honourable mention in the Canadian Communities category for a front page on the continuing coverage of the tragic murder of Reena Virk in 1997. “It’s an honour to be selected for this national recognition, though the subject matter recalls a difficult time in the community,” said editor Daniel Palmer. “We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for us. It’s a privilege to be able to tell the stories of this tight-knit community each and every week.” Newspapers from across the country submitted their historic front page stories from the past 150 years into select categories representing a range of significant and uniquely Canadian events, issues and people. A panel of industry experts determined the finalists, while the Canadian public voted throughout the summer to determine the winners. editor@saanichnews.com

shore Wolves on Wednesday (Sept. 10), a 5-0 loss to the Victoria Cougars on Thursday and a 6-2 home loss to the Wolves on Friday. The overtime loss earned the Braves its first point in the standings. Mackenzie Valentine, Kyle Smeding, Scott Henderson and Evan Horvath put the Braves up 4-1 in that game before the Wolves responded with three third-period goals to tie it up. Cory Hatcher scored for the Wolves in overtime. The Braves will play the final three games of September over a stretch 16 days, starting with a game Friday, Sept. 19 against the Kerry Park Islanders. Puck drop is 6:30 p.m. at Pearkes arena.

Saanich’s Daykin family are back from Langley where they managed a total of six medals at the B.C. Seniors Games. Ninety-one-year-old Mary Daykin continued her long legacy at the Games with two golds. Mary finished the five-kilometre power walk in one hour and 41 seconds and the 10-km walk in two hours, 12 minutes and 21 seconds. It was Mary’s 22nd year competing and she’s now drawn son Bruce and daughter-in-law Wenda into the fold as competitive senior athletes in the 60 to 64 age group. “There are some very strong athletes at the Games,” Bruce said. “There are people that go to these games every year until they can’t anymore.” It was Wenda’s first foray in to the Games, and she debuted well, winning silver in the women’s 10-km road walk and bronze in the 4x100 metre run (paired with South Island zone teammates). Bruce had competed once before, but this time he took his first two swimming medals, a silver in the 4x25 metre freestyle men’s swimming relay and bronze in 4x25 metre individual medley swimming relay. “This event forced me to swim faster than I have before, and I learned how fast I could go,” Bruce said. “I won the medals with some really strong relay swimmers from our zone. But I was also in six individual swimming events. Now I’m considering joining a masters group for the winter because I know I’ll

Slow start for Braves Offense is at a premium for the Saanich Braves, as the club has slid to an 0-4 record in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. The Braves are coming off a busy week, in which they played three games in three nights, a 5-4 overtime loss to the West-

The UVic Vikes scored six goals in their first win of the Canada West women’s field hockey season, 6-0 over the Calgary Dinos on Sunday. But the Vikes scraped by with only one goal on Sunday, as they escaped Calgary with a 1-0 win and a 2-0 record to date. Sunday’s winner came from defender Alexis Veljacic. It’s Veljacic’s first goal as a Vike, and it comes in her fifth and final season. “We scored on early on a penatly corner by Lexi and it was nice to see her score her first goal,” said Vikes head coach Lynne Beecroft. “It fits our theme of not relying on any one person to score goals. We weren’t able to get many past (Calgary’s) goalkeeper today and we definitely have some work to do on penalty corners.” The Vikes visit the UBC Thunderbirds this weekend for two matches, Saturday and Sunday. reporter@saanichnews.com

OUR VIEW

Strike circus can be fixed By the time this editorial reaches mailboxes across Saanich on Wednesday, the teachers’ strike may already be resolved. Education Minister Peter Fassbender may be triumphantly proclaiming a cost-conscious, ironclad, 1,000-year agreement that ensures the immediate frustrations arising from the inconvenience of children at home is dissipated. (That, or the government may be moving quickly on legislating teachers back to work.) Government-appointed mediator Vince Ready and chief negotiator Peter Cameron could be raising a beer to an exhaustive but lucrative job well done, while B.C. Teachers Federation president Jim Iker may be begrudgingly holding his final webcast to convince teachers the lost wages, monotonous picketing and overall trench warfare was worth the end result. But buried within the bitter finish is almost certainly not going to be a provincial sales tax increase to remedy a decade of government tinkering with the education portfolio. The outcome will produce no rallying cry amongst teachers nor any spontaneous bursts of Handel’s Hallelujah chorus in the B.C. legislature; neither party will be holding their heads high when children return to classrooms. Even after the dust has settled on the documents moving through the B.C. Court of Appeal regarding class size and composition, the vote-inducing repetition of the need for a balanced budget will continue to drown out any memory of Families First. Fassbender claims the outcome of binding arbitration would bleed the bank accounts of every B.C. taxpayer, but the government’s unwillingness to let go of power points less to fiscal prudence than to a fear of being caught out of line by an unbiased third party. Premier Christy Clark would do well to show leadership, not by digging in her heels on balancing the books, but by starting a provincewide conversation that asks taxpayers if they’re willing to accept a minimal tax increase for the good of schools, healthcare, poverty reduction and act boldly to address the inevitable rising costs related to social security. Let the people have their say Re: Amalgamation ‘not a Saanich debate:’ Leonard (News, Sept. 12) I wish I were more surprised by the incredibly patronizing remarks of Mayor Frank Leonard regarding the Saanich electorate and placing a non-binding amalgamation question on the November municipal ballot. Saanich is the only municipality that has not had a presentation from AmalgamationYes on the issue. It is also the only municipality that does not allow its electorate to speak unless directly addressing an item on the agenda. How democractic. Leonard seems to feel that the opinions of his electorate don’t matter, that he is the only one whose opinion counts. Yet many people on the street, at the Saanich Fair, and at various social gatherings tell me that they want the question on the ballot. Many of us feel that it is time to have effective regional governance. Angus Reid, a reputable polling firm, concluded that 80 per cent of the sampled population would like the question on the ballot. And Leonard himself has stated the current CRD model doesn’t work. Finally, perhaps having such a question on the ballot may encourage more people to vote. Voter turnout has been very poor in past elections. Perhaps that’s the real reason some don’t want the question on the ballot. Lower turnout tends to favour the status quo. As a Saanich resident, I request my council give voters a chance to express our views, in the same

way a significant number of other councils in the region have already agreed to do. Karen Harper Saanich

Dog ridership a slippery slope

Re: Barking back at transit (News, Sept. 10) This letter originally appeared on the Saanich News Facebook page. I am a regular transit commuter and dog owner. If you allow a fluffy little dog on the bus, you also have to allow my 120-pound Bullmastiff. She takes up as much space as another rider. Why not allow my cat, too, or a few parakeets? It’s a slippery slope. With many routes already heavily used and experiencing packed buses, it seems a tad ridiculous to start including animals as well. Pet owners made a choice to include animals in our lives. Part of that choice involved understanding that there may be expenses (like gas for the car to take them places). Some people don’t like dogs or may not want dog hair on their business attire; perhaps they are even allergic. Allowing dogs or any other animals are not their choice. Even as a dog owner, I have no right to force my choices on others anymore than their choice of perfume should be forced on me. Sorry, but it’s not about you and your dog: it’s about the bigger picture. John Phillips Saanich

PSA screening needs caution Re: Free Men’s Health Day ‘saves lives’ (News, Sept. 12) This article promotes PSA blood testing. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against PSA screening for prostate cancer. Elevated PSA leads to anxiety and often a prostate biopsy, during which a large needle is pushed through the wall of the lower intestine to obtain samples of tissue. The procedure can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream, leading to a host of bad outcomes including chills, fever and a visit to the hospital. The biopsy will show normal tissue, cancer or an indeterminate result. A normal biopsy does not guarantee the absence of cancer because the needle may have missed the abnormal cells. The cancer may be treatable, untreatable or it may be so early that treatment is not needed. An indeterminate result mandates another biopsy. The USPSTF 2012 recommendation states, “Many men are harmed as a result of PSA screening and few, if any, benefit.” Thank you for promoting men’s health. A man’s doctor should check blood pressure and glucose. Measuring cholesterol in everyone over 40 is controversial. Not mentioned in the article is the stool for occult blood test, good for detecting treatable colon cancer in people between age 50 and 74. Dr. Robert Shepherd Family practitioner, Saanich

Walking with Dinosaurs stomps into Save-on-Food Memorial Centre Sept. 18 to 21, and promises a life-size wow factor.

Dinos come alive at Save-on Daniel Palmer News staff

Once you get past the furrowed brows, razor-sharp teeth and metre-wide footprints, a Tyrannosaurus rex looks a little cute – at least when it’s being operated by three humans and constructed with bean bags and metal hydraulics. Walking with Dinosaurs, based on the award-winning BBC Television Series, debuts its first shows

in five years at Save-onFoods Memorial Arena this week, Sept. 18 to 21. “It’s kind of a journey through the history of the dinosaurs,” said director Scott Farris. Farris said his favourite part of past shows is hearing kids in the audience educating their parents about which dinosaurs are appearing on stage. In Dinosaurs, an actor playing a palaeontologist walks the audience through the Triassic, Jurassic and

Cretaceous periods as dinosaurs evolve from their amphibious beginnings to massive, iconic beasts. The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus, is 11 metres tall, and 17 metres from nose to tail. It took a team of 50 – including engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists, painters and animatronic experts – a full year to build the life-like production. Find tickets at dinosaurlive.com.

‘Young artists’ grasped importance of Emily Carr In her own words, Emily Carr said she had nothing in common with her own generation and much more in common with the young generation. In Victoria, the younger artists recognized Carr’s talent and were influenced by her – and would likely be honoured to know their work will be displayed alongside Carr’s at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria this fall. “She pioneered modernism in Canada, and in the 1930s and 1940s young Victoria artists sought her out for art instruction, mentorship and conversation,” said Michelle Jacques, AGGV chief curator.

Emily Carr’s Autumn in France, which was painted in 1911. Carr, a Victoria artist, pioneered modernism in the early 20th century. “Their interest in her work and ideas was rejuvenating to Carr, and it is undeniable that she had a certain

impact on the artistic output of these members of the young generation.” Emily Carr and

the Young Generation opened Aug. 29, and features works from Carr and a handful of Canadian artists including Max Maynard, Jack Shadbolt, Ina D.D. Uhthoff, Myfanwy Pavelic and Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher. Many of the paintings feature Vancouver Island locales, such as Saseenos, Whiffen Spit in Sooke and a First Nation’s reservation in Cowichan. A portrait of Carr with her dog by Hembroff-Schleicher will also be on display. This unique exhibit is the result of the AGGV loaning seven of its Carr paintings, which had been featured in the AGGV’s long-running Emily Carr: On the Edge of Nowhere to the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England for the exhibit Painting Canada: Emily Carr in British Columbia. “We are thrilled to be contributing to this long overdue presentation of Carr’s work overseas,” said Jacques. “While several of our beloved Carr paintings will travel to Dulwich, to be featured in an exhibition that will surely secure Carr’s rightful place on the international stage of art history, Emily Carr and the Young Generation will tell the story of the artist’s origins, impact and legacy in Victoria.” Emily Carr and the Young Generation, which runs through to Aug. 28, 2015, will also be a chance to see these other talented artists’ depictions of Vancouver Island, and its people. How to use EYE DROPS correctly Occasionally one uses prescription or non prescription eye drops to treat certain eye conditions, infections or diseases. It is always a battle to try and aim the drop so that it has a perfect “landing” without most of the contents running down your face. Before you use any eye drops, be sure to tell your Optometrist about any other prescription or nonprescription medications that you are taking or any allergies that you have. Here are some general tips about correctly putting eye drops in your eyes. 1. Look at the ceiling by standing or sitting and tilting your head backwards. Some people like to lie down on a flat surface. 2. The best way to ensure the drop remains in your eye is to gently pull the skin of your lower eyelid between your thumb and index finger to create a “pocket” for the drop. If you are unable to master this, gently pull your lower lid down with your index finger. 3. Look up (so you are not looking directly at the bottle) and gently release a drop into the pocket of your eye. Keep the bottle’s nozzle or the eyedropper clean by not touching it to any part of your eyes. 4. If you are unable to get the drop into you eye because of blinking, try this: close your eye and pull the lower lid down. Aim the drop into the inside corner of your eye. Open your eye and let the drop run into your lower lid. (Be sure to try the open-eye method at your next scheduled dose as it is a more reliable way to ensure the drop remains in your eye). 5. To help keep the medication in your eye and prevent it from escaping through the tear duct, your optometrist may instruct you to “occlude” this duct by gently pressing on the inside corner of your closed eye with your index finger for about three minutes. If drops have been www.oakbayoptometry.com placed in both eyes, you can perform occlusion by placing your thumb and index finger the index fingers of Dr.(orNeil Paterson both hands) on either side of your nose and gently pressDr. Suzanne Sutter ing down on the inside corners of both closed eyes. This Optometrists step is very important with some medications, so do not skip it if your doctor specifies it. 100 -2067 6. Gently blot your closed eyes with a tissue wipe Cadboro Bay to Rd. away any excess drops. 250-595-8500 7. If you use more than one kind of drop, wait at least five minutes between drops. Be sure to follow all of the instructions that your docDr. Rachel Rushforth* tor of optometry gives you and to complete the course of www.admiralsvision.ca medication or treatment he or she recommends. SEASON PREVIEW victoriaroyals.com HOME OPE FRIDAY SEP NER T. 26

Staying centered Centre Tyler Soy thrust into top-six responsibility

Travis Paterson News staff

Tyler Soy’s name is popping up a lot these days. Long before the season started, the 17 year old was bandied about on some early season predictions as one to watch in the Western Hockey League this year. Turns out most everyone in the WHL, coaches included, expect Soy to break out. Even Tyler Soy. “That kind of thing is in the back of your mind but you need to block out as much as you can,” said Soy, who won gold with Canada at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka U18 World Cup. “It’s nice to be mentioned but I need to focus on my game and most of the pressure comes from myself.” The eighth overall pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft is entering his second eyar with the Royals after finishing his 16 year old eason at 20th in WHL rookie scoring with 15 goals and 15 assists. That list is deceiving, however, with several 18 year olds and even a 19 year old college defector (Adam Tambellini) ahead of him. With centres Ben Walker and Steven Hodges graduating to the pro ranks this

year, it’s a safe bet Soy will eventually slide into the second line centre role of Dave Lowry’s lineup. But to start the season, he’ll get a chance at being No. 1. Brandon Magee, 20, tops the depth chart at centre, but is absent as an invitee at Calgary Flames camp. When he returns, he’ll serve the remainder of his 12 game suspension earned in the playoffs. That leaves Soy and Logan Fisher, 18, as the defacto 1-2 centres. Then comes 16-year-old rookie Dante Hannoun, assuming he sticks around. “Soy is good on his faceoffs, a good playmaker and good at playing two ways,” said assistant coach Enio Sacilotto. “He works hard and is playing physical when he has to.” Sacilotto and others believe Soy will be one of the best players in the league, whether it’s later this season or not for another two. As long as he puts the work in.

BLAZING START TO SEASON The Victoria Royals kick off the 2014-15 Western Hockey League schedule with a road trip against the Vancouver Giants, Friday night (Sept. 19) and the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday night.

“Soy had his 16 year old season and for us (coaches) it was more about guidance,” Sacilotto said. “He has to raise his game to the next level, he’s a gold medallist now.” For Soy it’s about staying grounded, keeping his high school grades up (whenever that starts), and applying a new

approach to each day. “The Ivan Hlinka and being on Team Canada opened my eyes,” Soy said. “I want to earn as many minutes as I can, hopefully specialty teams, but whatever role is given to me I’ll try as hard as I can.” sports@vicnews.com

The home schedule opens with a pair of games against the Blazers, Friday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Sept. 27 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Puck drop is 7:05 p.m. for both games. Ticket packages and single tickets are on sale now. Visit www.selectioyourtickets.com, call 250-222-7777 or the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre box office. Reaching

the next level Royals players at NHL camps Travis Paterson News staff

It will be a fresh start for the Victoria Royals. The club is preparing for its Sept. 19 Western Hockey League opener in Kamloops without six of its top players, all attending NHL rookie camps. It’s an added challenge, especially as the Royals hope to contend for the Western conference title. But it’s what you want for your team, insists Royals assistant coach Enio Sacilotto. “It’s a good reflection of our program. The more guys at pro camp the happier we are. “Look at Portland, they have 13, that’s a reflection (of their success).” Half the Royals at NHL camps are with the Calgary Flames as draft

picks Keegan Kanzig (2013) and Austin Carroll (2014) are joined by training camp invite Brandon Magee. Axel Blomqvist looks to stick with the Winnipeg Jets, where he signed an entry level deal last year. Travis Brown is trying to impress with the Ottawa Senators and Joe Hicketts is in Detroit where he already scored an exhibition overtime winner as a Red Wings invite. Hot Travel Trends

Discover

s o d a b r Ba - It’s closer than you think!

BARBADOS

O

ne of the hottest trends in travel is the sharp growth in multigenerational travel. Families are living geographically farther from each other than at any time in history and a multigenerational trip is one of the only options for today’s modern mobile family to gather in one place. Baby boomers have the time, the health and the disposable income to make travel with their families a top priority. We are seeing people looking for all-inclusive resorts that focus on cuisine and entertainment for the entire family. Then there are

vacations that make memories that will last a lifetime. These include African Safari’s, tours in Europe, London Theatre – the list is endless. Cruising is always a big hit with family and friends groups. Whether it is hiring a canal boat, River Cruise or an Ocean going cruise it’s a wonderful way to explore the world together. I speak from experience…there are no words that can describe the pleasure that family travel can bring. Just hearing “Grandma let’s go back to see the soldiers at Buckingham Palace” or “Let’s all meet at the restaurant overlooking the beach” is priceless. And the best thing? Nobody gets stuck doing all of the driving or having to wash all of the dishes!

Discover Tahiti’s Only All-Inclusive Experience Join Elizabeth and Peter Wheaton on this very special sailing. Your package includes roundtrip air from Los Angeles (add Victoria, BC from just $460 USD) all onboard meals, 24-hour room service, beverages including select wine and spirits, gratuities, access to our private islet Motu Mahana and white sand beach in Bora Bora, and complimentary watersports.

With 166 square miles of dramatic landscapes and breathtaking scenic views, surrounded by warm turquoise seas, beautiful white sandy beaches, there’s so much to see and many things to do. Friendly people, excellent cuisine, beautiful old great houses as well as tropical plants and flowers.

Things changed for the Victoria Royals the day Axel Blomqvist showed up. At 6-foot-6, he stood out. But otherwise, he was an unknown player when he took the ice for a Nov. 22 home tilt against the Kamloops Blazers. The jury was out. Could he skate? It was hard to tell. With legs like skyscrapers, he looked off balance, his stride stretching from Blanshard to Quadra. Then, with his extraterrestrial reach, he began making slick plays in a way Royals’ fans had never seen. He only picked up one assist in that game. But he showed what he could do. And the points piled up. In a December to remember, Blomqvist collected 14 points in 11 games. The Royals won eight of them. He finished the season with 43 points in 46 games. This year the 19-year-old is ready to lead the Royals from his spot as the team’s top right winger. He says he’s focused on an improved defensive game, but it’s his unique offensive flair everyone wants to see. This is all assuming he returns from Penticton, where he’s competing as a Winnipeg Jets rookie.

Axel Blomqvist “Blomqvist needs to be in that scoring role,” said assistant coach Enio Sacilotto. “We’ll always have a way we play, strong, fast and physical, and he will have to fall into his role in that respect, too.” It’s been a big summer for Blomqvist, who wore the yellow and blue Tre Kronor for Team Sweden in two separate tournaments, the Under20 Four Nations tournament, and the U.S. Hockey development tournament. Both were big stage auditions for Team Sweden at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship in Toronto and Montreal, Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.

“My goal for the first half of the season is to do well here and make (Sweden’s) world junior team. That would be awesome, especially here in Canada,” Blomqvist said. “(Sweden) said work hard and they’ll be watching me. Obviously I have to compete for a spot, so hopefully have a good first half. Right now the goal is to get better defensively, to get a bigger role with the Royals and be a leader on and off the ice.” This week Blomqvist will be absent from the Royals’ WHL season opener as he represents the Winnipeg Jets at the Canuck-hosted Young Stars rookie tournament in Penticton. Playing in Penticton was a turning point for Blomqvist last year, when he turned heads and signed a three year entry level deal with the Jets. “They’re all really good players. Last year was fun, it was a tryout for me. This year there’s really no pressure, I just have to go out and play my game, I’m not the type of guy who feels pressure.” His Jets teammates this year will include some established American Hockey League players such as Adam Lowry, son of Royals’ coach Dave Lowry. “That’s what you want, to play against the best.” sports@vicnews.com

Since relocating here in 2011, the Victoria Royals have been without representation on Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championships. That’s about to change, as Royals coach Dave Lowry was named an assistant coach with Team Canada for this year’s World Junior tournament in Mon. treal and Toronto, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. Lowry, the 2013-14 WHL Coach of the Year, will be on the bench alongside head coach Benoit Groulx of the Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL) and assistant coach Scott Walker of the Guelph Storm. It’s Lowry’s first coaching stint with Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence, though he was originally slated to be the head coach of Canada’s National Summer Under-18 Team in 2009. He withdrew from that role, however, as he went on to be an assistant coach with the NHL’s Calgary Flames for two seasons. Lowry is unlikely to have any Royals on his Team Canada roster this season (fingers crossed for Joe Hicketts) but there is a good chance he could face Axel Blomqvist on Team Sweden. sports@vicnews.com

Cutting-edge treatment targets cancer B.C. Cancer Foundation aims to fund clinical trial Laura Lavin News staff

Oak Bay News owner David Black, hosted the announcement of a funding campaign to support clinical trials of a new cancer treatment at his Oak Bay home this week. “This is a cutting-edge form of treatment,” said Dr. Brad Nelson, Director of the Trev and Joyce Deeley Research Centre. In 10 years of research at the centre, Nelson and his team are prepared to begin clinical trials of a form of immunotherapy called adoptive T cell therapy, or ACT. The therapy involves taking a patient’s cancerous tumour, after it’s been removed, and harvesting T cells in the lab. “(We can) pull out the immune cells, in particular the T cells that are in the tumour, and are trying to fight that tumour – having a ground battle if you will – and we can take those T cells and grow them in the lab … get them all ramped up and revived and in very large numbers and give them back to the patient in an IV bag as an infusion.” Those T cells then enter the blood stream and circulate throughout the patient’s body, wherever cancer cells may be trying to hide, whether it be in the bone marrow, liver, or other organs. Those T cells will be able to find the cancer recognize it and destroy it, he said. “It’s an entirely new approach to cancer treatment. It’s using the body’s own defences to fight (cancer) but with some help from science – and it’s working,” he said.

Don Denton/News staff

David Black, left, and Dr. Brad Nelson, director of the Deeley Research Centre at the B.C. Cancer Agency-Vancouver Island, chat at Black’s home before a special update on immunotherapy cancer research taking place at the B.C. Cancer Agency. Black hosted the event at his Oak Bay home. The goal of immunotherapy is to enhance the immune response to cancer using drugs, vaccines or T cell infusions. Successfull immunotherapy rids the body of residual cancer cells. The T cells also remain in the body, protecting the patient from a reoccurrence.

The funding campaign will allow for the construction of a Good Manufacturing Process Clean Room, a secure, closed suite with special air filtration equipment that keeps the entire space sterile. Researchers wear gowns, hoods and booties while inside to protect the integrity of their work.

The BC Cancer Agency believes a $4 million charitable investment will lead to some $4 to $6-million in grant funding. “Philanthropy will be the driver for this exciting research,” said Alyssa Grace, Senior Director, Development for the BC Cancer Foundation. “At this stage, the Ministry of Health does not fund early stage clinical trials and there is no apparent commercial value to the work that’s being done. “It’s a procedure. It’s a process that involves a patient’s own T cells. So, philanthropy will drive the science through this first phase of clinical trials.” Those clinical trials, which will include 10 to 15 patients per year, are expected to begin as early as 2017. “We’re at $1.2 of a $4-million goal to get to the end of the first phase of clinical trials and that will build the infrastructure, the staffing and the protocols around the clinical trial,” said Grace. In a recent clinical trial in Philadelphia involving children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, engineered T cells generated “complete, durable remission” in 14 of 22 patients, Nelson said. “This is the most exciting period of my career, no question,” he added. “It’s exciting as a scientist to get to test your ideas.” Nelson and his team want to build a program in BC to offer the T cell treatments to those with ovarian cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer. The first clinical trial will focus on patients with ovarian cancer. To learn more, or to make a donation, go to bccancerfoundation.com. editor@vicnews.com
