Doctors, teachers and local figures gathered at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital to announce a new rural residency program at the hospital. Post graduate medical students will have the chance to spend two years learning how to be a general practitioner in a rural setting. The program starts up in July 2015. Liz Bevan Photo

Doctors training in Trail will mean more doctors practicing in Trail according to a new plan from the University of British Columbia. Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is the newest addition to the short list of hospitals offering rural residency post graduate opportunities for family practice medical students in the province. Dr. Cheryl Hume, site director for the residency program, says training family practitioners in a rural community is designed to encourage newly licensed physicians to settle down and start up a practice in that same community. “The addition of a family practice residency program will further compliment the enhance our capacity to train future physicians and will further enhance physician presence in rural areas,” she said, during a press conference at KBRH on Monday. “It will also allow them the gratifying experience of what it is like to practice family medicine in rural areas. We are very pleased to be part of this and hopefully we will see many young physicians returning to our area to provide care. It will have a major impact on stabilizing future physi-

cian recruitment and retention and thereby enhancing patient care and increasing physician access in West Kootenay.” UBC Residency Program Director, Dr. Willa Henry, was in attendance at the press conference and spoke about the importance of a program that trains doctors to be rural general practitioners. “There are a few things that we know at UBC and one of them is that we need more rural doctors,” she said. “The Department of Family Practice (at UBC) takes the social responsibility of that very seriously. We know that the people who learn in the context in the communities who need doctors are best prepared to work in those communities.” UBC chose KBRH as the sixth location for the two-year rural residency program after much deliberation and input from surrounding communities. “When we came to this region to find a community which we felt would be well suited to meet the demands of the expanding ministry, we were overwhelmed by the engagement here,” she said. “We have no doubt that this is going to be a very successful site. We are also excited about what this will mean for your community.” Dr. Scot Mountain, a spe-

cialist and trainer for thirdyear medical students at KBRH says the program is a great addition to the hospital, trainers and students. “From the (student) perspective, they get one-on-one interactions with patients which is not available in the bigger centres,” he said. “When you train in the city, there are multiple trainees that you have to stand behind while something interesting is going on. Here, they are frontline from Day One and they are learning things that would take a lot longer if they were in the city.” It isn’t only post graduate medical students that benefit from the rural residency program, but also the trainers. “It enriches our practice,” said Dr. Mountain. “It forces us to be on top of our game and know what we are doing by making sure that we are up-to-date. It also gives us a chance to interact with our patients in a completely different and new way. It gives us a fresh set of eyes that we can see the patients through.” The program starts at KBRH with the first batch of UBC medical students starting the two-year program in July 2015. Until then, Dr. Hume will be working with UBC and KBRH to determine the best way to set up and deliver training with the resources at the hospital.

Nelson to provide financial services for villages Kevin Mills West Kootenay Advertiser

The City of Nelson has struck an innovative set of arrangements with three Central Kootenay Regional District villages. Salmo, Slocan and Silverton have entered into individual agreements that will see Nelson staff provide monthly and annual accounting services and budgetary planning assistance — efforts that will be of considerable benefit to the three villages and to Nelson. The deals were struck in the hope of helping neighbouring municipalities tackle increasing public sector accounting requirements. “This is very important for Slocan because as a small community we struggle,” said Village of Slocan Mayor Madeleine Perriere. “Gathering all our finances under the umbrella of a bigger community will be a great solution for us.” She explained when you have a community of 300 people, it is difficult to have all this services and to retain a chief financial officer. “It’s very costly. Slocan is in a transition. We have lost our sawmill, so we are trying to reinvent ourselves and financially we have to be very careful. The more the province is demanding from us, the more expertise you need,” said Perrier who added that joining with Nelson is a great deal for Slocan. Silverton Mayor Kathy Provan agreed, adding that the move will be more cost efficient than hiring an individual to perform the financial duties, something that has proven difficult to do. She said after being unable to hire a financial officer, Silverton was forced to look at other options. That led to a conversation with Nelson Mayor John Dooley and before long they were discussing if this arrangement was “doable.” “Salmo and Slocan were in similar positions so that’s kind of where it started,” said Provan. She feels other communities could benefit from this endeavour. “I think this is a template — for oth-

er BC municipalities that are struggling with staffing and financial issues — to look at this and see how three small municipalities have been able to work with a bigger municipality,” said Provan. By taking some of the financial duties from the villages, Nelson is helping the smaller areas examine other local issues. “The Financial Services Agreement allows smaller municipalities to focus on the operations of our villages,” said Salmo Mayor Ann Henderson, “while having increasingly demanding reporting handled by a professional team.” Dooley said the arrangement will give Salmo, Slocan and Silverton access to the city’s considerable financial expertise and resources, and all at a very affordable rate. He also pointed out that city staff will not be assisting the villages in tasks like day-to-day financial services. They’ll ensure accounts are reconciled monthly, create year-end financial statements and audit file, and assist with the preparation of annual budgets and five year financial plans. The mayor adds that income generated by the agreements will be used to cover any additional staffing require-

ments, should they be necessary. He called it a good deal for Nelson. “Some of the ideas we’ve had in the past have been how do we build capacity within our own organization? How do we maximize the resources that we have here?” Dooley said the new project is allowing the city to do that and if it goes well over the next year, then the possibilities are endless. It could expand into areas like engineering, shared purchasing or even shared tendering. “It’s about collaboration, it’s about regional cooperation and its about building capacity,” said Dooley. Nelson chief financial officer Colin McClure said in the beginning there will be “up front” work — including quarterly updates, preparing financial statements and preparing five-year financial plans — but he believes once they get past that, and create the templates, this will go smoothly. “Financial statements don’t usually change much year after year. It’s not like I’m starting from scratch, we have some templates that I believe will work for the villages. Not all of them of course.” Because of their size, he said some of the work loads will be on a much smaller scale.

Gerrard, a ghost town at the south end of Trout Lake, had four previous names. The first was a Sinixt name recorded by anthropologist James Teit as kali’so and by Verne Ray as sia’uks qa-li’su. According to Dorothy Kennedy and Randy Bouchard in First Nations Ethnography and Ethnohistory in BC’s Lower Kootenay/Columbia Hydropower Region, sia’uks means “place of ” but they didn’t recognize qa-li’-su. Ray provided the translation “Where the water flows outward,” referring to the drainage of Trout Lake into the Lardeau River. (We’ll discuss the similarity of kali’so to Kaslo later in this series.) A townsite at that point was first mentioned in the Nelson Tribune of April 13, 1893: “Selkirk is situate at the south end of Trout Lake and is owned by Green Bros. of Kaslo.” Not much became of Selkirk, named for the mountain range, until 1901, when the CPR began building a railway to connect Trout Lake and Kootenay Lake. The Lardeau Eagle of June 27 reported: “Selkirk City … is no more so far as the name is concerned. It is to be known, as soon as surveyed, as Duchesney.” The Sandon Paystreak of July 6 added: “R.F. Green’s townsite at the foot of Trout Lake, formerly called Selkirk, promises to be quite an important centre …  The CPR engineers are now surveying and platting it and have named it Duchesnay.” Charles-Edmond Juchereau Duchesney (or Duchesnay) of Revelstoke had just been promoted to assistant superintendent of the

CPR’s western division. However, less than two months later, his namesake town had a new moniker. According to the Slocan Drill of August 30, 1901: “The CPR have changed the name of their townsite at the foot of Trout Lake from Selkirk to Twin Falls.” No explanation was given and the following week, Duchesney was killed in a rockfall in a tunnel at North Bend. But a creek, pass, lake, and mountain in Yoho National Park are all named for him. Twin Falls fell out of favor with the CPR as well. The Lardeau Eagle of October 31, 1901 explained the townsite was now called Gerrard. This honoured George Bentley Gerrard, who arrived in Kaslo in 1897 to run

the Bank of British North America. He transferred to Winnipeg in 1902 and later moved to Montreal, but not much else is known about him except that he was a director of several mining companies. Gerrard also gave his name to the Lardeau River’s huge rainbow trout. Gerrard wasn’t surveyed as a townsite until May 1909 by A.R. Heyland. The plan showed the owner was

hotelier Ernest Mobbs, for whom Mobbs Creek was named. Gerrard’s primary industry was a large sawmill that operated into the 1920s. It also had a fish hatchery — one building of which has been moved to Meadow Creek where it’s a museum. A post office operated from 1906 to 1957. Today Gerrard has a campground and a platform to watch spawning trout.

Selkirk College recognizes difference makers

CASTLEGAR – Four Selkirk College instructors have been recognized for their professional excellence in the classroom and the college community. Each year, Selkirk’s standing committee on professional excellence (SCOPE) honours staff members who stand out. Nominated by students and peers, the SCOPE Awards are handed out for exceptional performance. This year’s SCOPE Award recipients include Taya Whitehead, Janet Mayr, Tracy Harvey and Carol Andrews. The award winners will be honoured in a ceremony in the Staff Lounge on the Castlegar Campus on Thursday, September 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. “Every time I enter her classroom she always has a welcoming smile on her face and brightens up the room with her sense of humor,” a student wrote in Mayr’s nomination. “It is clear that Janet is passionate about her teaching.” Janet Mayr is an instructor of sociology and women’s studies in the school of university arts and sciences. Mayr has also been involved outside the classroom, working on Selkirk’s curriculum committee and the status of women committee over the years. Whitehead is an instructor in the early childhood care and education program.

Nominated by a colleague, Whitehead is described as having made significant contributions to the college in the six years that she has been a Selkirk employee. Upon her arrival, Whitehead did a complete revision of the early childhood education program which has resulted in three levels of programming at the college today: certificate, diploma, and post basic specialty certificates. She also developed an employment skills access training program in early childhood education which saw approximately 80 students trained as assistants in the West Kootenay. Harvey is an instructor in the school of environment and geomatics. Harvey’s students describe her as passionate, enthusiastic and authentic. Harvey’s colleagues agree that she is a devoted student advocate who contributes generously to the College, serving on the strategic planning committee, working with the institutional research team, and introducing new technology into the classroom. Andrews is also an instructor in the school of environment and geomatics. In the nomination, Andrews’ colleagues spoke of her dedication to students and the program. “She cares about each and every one of them and sets no limitations on what she will do to help them be better stu-

BBC 2014-15 LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS

39 Canadian Brigade Group’s largest exercise of the year was held in Trail from August 18 to 28. The Exercise Kootenay Cougar brought together 450 soldiers and 80 military vehicles to ensure that soldiers are prepared and have the proper skills to respond to domestic emergencies and international operations. The training exercise is focused on eight training tasks and run as a competition, measuring junior leadership and military skills. The competition lasts four days, separating soldiers into platoons of 25, led by a junior officer and mentored by senior staff. Trail was specifically selected for the exercise because of its challenging and unique terrain. “Trail provides us with challenging terrain that will test our junior leaders’ ability to navigate and conduct operations over difficult ground. It is a different environment to our usual training areas, particularly for those soldiers who come from the Lower Mainland of BC. We have also been made to feel very welcome by the many key community figures that we have approached in the course of planning this exercise,” Stated Lt.-Col. Nigel Whittaker, who was the Exer-

(RCAF) as a pilot in 2004. 449 reserve soldiers volunteered in the Canadian Armed Forces mission to Afghanistan. Unlike reserve soldiers, Evers is a part of the regular force and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. Overseas, Evers transported soldiers flying a CH-147 Chinook and provided logistical resupply in over 90 combat missions. Evers noted, “It was an extremely rewarding experience for myself. It demonstrated our capabilities as helicopter pilots. It kept hundreds if not thousands off the roads where the risk of IED’s are very high.” Evers returned from his deployment in Afghanistan in February 2011. Since then he continues to train and guide others, taking on the role of Flight Instructor and Check Pilot on the CH-146 Griffon helicopter. “It is a lot of responsibility to ensure we are maintaining the standards for the ability to deploy both domestically and internationally,” Evers said. Evers’ grandfather Roland Harrison fought in WWII in the RCAF as a Bomb Aimer on B-17s and Lancaster’s. Harrison lived out the rest of his years in his hometown of Trail with his wife Joan. Evers currently resides in Edmonton and is looking forward to eventually returning to Southern BC to retire.

Trail is a community in bloom

West Kootenay Advertiser

Trail is blooming and gardeners, planters and city representatives are coming to town to celebrate a successful growing season, and maybe even take home a few awards. The provincial Communities in Bloom Awards and Conference starts on Sept. 11 and runs for three days. The planning committee has been busy at work planning and putting together events, luncheons, tours and guest speakers. A large contingent of out-of-town delegates are expected for the event which will feature the “Look at us Now” Tour highlighting the achievements of the local CiB group. Mary Martin of the planning committee says the one event she is looking forward to the most is the White Night on Sept. 12. It will be held in Jubilee Park along the Esplanade and highlight the White Garden, which is a re-creation of the Sissinghurst Castle Garden in England. “I don’t know if there is anything that stands out, but I am really looking forward to showing the White Garden,” she said. “I am really looking forward to showcasing that to out-of-town people.” Along with the White Night, organizers have put together tours of Teck, the Friday Market, the Beaver Valley and speakers explaining the work Trail has completed to transform from a ‘dusty industrial town,’ to competing at an international level in CiB competitions. Martin hopes that visitors from other cities and towns across B.C. will recognize the changes Trail has made over the years. “We really hope to spread the word of how beautiful an area we have here,” she said. “We really want to showcase the community, the work that Communities in Bloom has done and the beauty of the area, for sure.” Hosting the provincial conference isn’t just about showing off the beauty of Trail, but also about promoting CiB. “I think our objective is to also enhance and promote the Communities in Bloom program,” said Martin. “What we would really like to see out of it is more communities joining. We also want to keep the interest and participation up and showcase the fun that is in it too.” Martin invites all attendees to stick around the area into Sunday, even though there are no conference events planned. “We would like people to hang around on

National recognition Trail Daily Times gets honourable mention in News papers Canada’s Front Page competition

Nancy Greene winning her Olympic gold medal put the region on the national map in 1968. And the skier nicknamed “The Little Tiger” has done it again. The Trail Times earned a honourable mention for its 1968 front page chronicling Greene’s win in Newspapers Canada’s Front Pages competition. A panel of judges selected the finalists for each category ranging from Canada at War to Canadian Politics to Canada on the International Stage. “It was a panel of expert judges who determined the finalists and then the Canadian public who voted and determined the winners,” explained Taylor Korman, awards coordinator for Newspapers Canada in Toronto. Topping the list for Canadian sports was Nova Scotia’s Kings County Register’s 2012 front page on Acadia’s win at the Atlantic University basketball championships. Second place went to the Calgary Herald for its front page on the 1988 Winter Olympics. The Herald also

took third with a front page on Canada’s hockey win at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. “The final placings came down to the voting public so that’s always subjective,” said Trail Times editor Guy Bertrand. “However, just to be mention in the same breath as Calgary’s coverage of its hometown Winter Olympics is certainly a feather in our cap.” The Globe and Mail took first in the Canada at War category with its from Victory Day edition on May 8, 1945. The Calgary Herald’s front page celebrating 100 years of the Calgary Stampede in 2012 was tops in Canadian Arts, Culture and Entertainment. The Calgary Herald won in Canadian Science and Tech-

nology for a front page report on the vanishing grain elevators in Western Canada. The Calgary Herald completed the hat trick with first place in the Canada on the International Stage with its Olympic Games’ preview front page in 1988. The Hamilton Spectator’s 2005 front page on a firefighter garnered top spot in Canadian Communities. The Globe and Mail’s 2005 front page saluting fallen RCMP officers who were gunned down in Mayerthorpe, Alta., was voted the best in the Canadian Heroes category. The top Canadian Politics story was The Globe’s July 1, 1867 announcing Canada’s Confederation Day. To view the top front pages go to www.frontpages.ca

Top Secret: Inside the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory By Keith Morgan

Milton Keynes, England – The security here seemingly rivals that of the most topsecret government institutions. “Without the proper finger you can’t get in,” says Silvia Halfar, grinning while prodding the fingerprint scanner. The door clicks open to the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory, where we would observe the hi-tech production techniques behind the success of four-time world F1 champion driver Sebastian Vettel and the four Constructors’ Championship titles earned by the team. The design genius is indisputably Adrian Newey. With ten Constructors’ Championships under his belt, won

with three different teams – Williams F1, McLaren and now Infiniti-Red Bull – he has no rival. “Adrian draws up to 100 designs (car parts and components) a week and I mean draws, literally,” informs Silvia. His work is scanned and 3D printers generate models for testing. It’s not a one-man show: more than 600 people design, test, build and assemble the hundreds of thousands of parts required for the race cars driven by Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo. Every season, the 110-strong design team produces a new car that conforms to the strict F1 regulations. A super computer tests every part virtually, before a new model hits the former Concorde jet wind tunnel

in nearby Bedford. Its processing power is a closely guarded secret but it’s greater than 35,000 iPads combined. Different parts are designed for every racetrack, sometimes within 24 hours of a race. “I had to take five bags to

part profiles are fed in and tested virtually by the drivers on any of the F1 circuits programmed into the machine. It was likely overworked this year as the old V8 engines were replaced with turbo-powered 1.6-litre V6 hybrid powerplants. There are no underground tunnels between the four buildings so when a secret race-winning part is produced what happens? – Silvia laughs: “Well, then we put it on a tea trolley, cover it with a towel and wheel it across the road.” By the time the chuckling had died down, we were all peering through the windows of a huge gym. “The race team has to keep fit,” said Silvia, anticipating our question. There are also trainers and nutritionists available to the pit side

crew. Turns out the garage guys practice pit stops every day within the factory’s four walls. “The team holds the world record for a pit stop in 1.923 seconds!” she added. Every one-hundredth of a second can mean the difference between a win and loss. Shortly before leaving, we stand by a windowless wall. It’s the operations room, in where live data is analysed and information fed back to the racetrack. No admittance. “After one race the winning team Tweeted a picture of their ops room . . . . we could see who was in the room and what programs they were running on their monitors.” With that, the exit door buzzed and the cool air rushed in to take our places.

Drivers, don’t forget to shoulder check for cyclists. If you’re going to make a turn it’s really important to check the inside lane to make sure that a cyclist is not approaching your blind spot.

Ford’s top Car-toonist draws for real By Bob McHugh

Studio 2000x is a fullyfledged moviemaking animation department that’s buried deep in the bowels of Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Jeffery (Jeff) Nowak heads a groundbreaking small group of dedicated Animators/Auto Designers who are playing an increasingly important role in product development at Ford and

changing the way cars are created. Jeffery Nowak talked recently about his unique line of work, while he was here attending the SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The conference attracts professionals worldwide from the computer graphics, visual effects, gaming, science, robotics and movie industries. “Our animations are cin-

ematic in that we try to convey the message within a product and express ‘the feel’ of that vehicle, as best we can,” said Nowak. “We’re trying to create a reality, before a reality actually exists, yet achieve a level of realism. We live for that challenge and it’s very exciting and rewarding, especially in the artistic pursuit.” Designing a new automobile is a long and complex

process that typically takes about two years, yet it still starts with a simple twodimensional sketch. In the digital age, however, that sketch is done on a specialized computer tablet, as it’s easier and faster to then develop it into a 3D model. From there, an actual scaled-down clay or foam model can be produced. As they move ahead in this design decision phase, more complex 3D design themes

are explored and eventually a full-size clay model is produced. “What we’re seeing now is a whole new generation of tools that allow us to work more intuitively,” said Nowak. “The transition from hands-on sketching and hard clay sculpting tools to computer inputs was a challenge for some designers. Now we’re seeing a maturity of the technology to a point that these

(digital) tools are becoming more like those organic tools again. Before Ford commits to producing expensive full-scale models, a lot of animation work is now performed. “This is my world,” affirmed Nowak. “We build a lot of complex visual experiences to allow all stakeholders within our company (Ford)

The images produced are in ultra-high definition, known as 4K, which is four times clearer than commercial high-definition imaging, as there’s intense attention to detail of all facets of the vehicle – exterior, interior, proportions, stance, etc. “In addition to being a powerful internal communication tool, digital animation is also a great tool that we hand-off to our marketing organization,” said Nowak. “It also allows us to do more in the same amount of time. In the past, we might have only been able to do one design theme in a development time block. Now we can do ten, fifteen or even twenty design themes in that same time block.” Jeffrey Nowak has been with the Ford Motor Company for eighteen years and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in industrial design (transpor-

tation) from the College for Creative Studies. He holds more than 30 design patents with Ford Motor Company and is considered an industry leader in the field of computer-aided industrial

design process and technology. And he’s a big admirer of movie director/producer Michael Bay, who is best known for the Transformers movie series. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

2014 RAM 1500 CREW 4X4

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

into one’s forward visibility. An awkward spot for GPS system. Pairing a Bluetooth device isn’t that straightforward either. Not to mention, the 500C, with its 1.4L engine and humble 101 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque isn’t a stable stallion. Despite its lack of power, pressing the Sport button helps it feel a little peppier. The 5-speed manual transmission is hardly a chore, even when I’m just inching along at a snail’s pace. While its imperfections should cause me to think about ever wanting to drive or own one, I still can’t seem to stop loving this little car. I like its quirkiness and the fact that it’s not perfect. I love the exterior colour: Espresso. It sparkles in the sun and has a warm rich-

The top is down. The sun is shining. It’s not a bad day to be stuck in downtown traffic. John Legend’s “All of Me” comes on the radio while behind the wheel of the 2014 Fiat 500C. As I wait in the Georgia Street parking lot, I listen intently to the song. Some lyrics of the song are: “Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections.” Hmmmm. As I contemplate this, it applies directly to the pint-

sized Fiat I’m captaining. In fact, there are imperfections about this four-seater that drive me crazy but I can’t seem to dislike it. One example is the sound that greets you as you enter its cabin. There is nothing melodic about it. No mellifluous ding-dong ding-done; just a harsh monotone noise that seems to stay longer than an uninvited party guest. Even passengers commented on how annoying it is. The volume buttons on the dash really should be knobs. You should be able to crank

ness to it. When matched with the two-toned leather-trimmed bucket seats, it looks stylish and chic. Bringing the outside in, the espresso paint also colours to life the dash. Combined with ivory touches, it has an upscale ambiance. The tester, being the Lounge trim of 500C, it has an MSRP of $23,995. That comes with keyless entry, a chrome shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel (and the aforementioned leather seating surfaces with heated front seats), 4-wheel disc brakes, ABS, hill start assist and more. When not stuck in traffic, the 500C actually remains quiet on the open road, with the top up, of course. It certainly doesn’t handle like its race-primed sibling, the Abarth, but still manages to turn on a dime when required. It’s also a lovely road companion because imperfections on the road aren’t felt with abrasion or discomfort. Furthermore, if you want to shed some light on the cabin, there are three settings you can use at the push of a button. One is a sunroof-like option, the next goes about 2/3 of the way down, and the last is all the way down. Either way, you have options on how much Vitamin D you’d like to consume. I feel like I’m back in grade school, sitting on the grass field at lunch, plucking the petals of a dandelion, one by one, saying, “I love it, I don’t love it, I love it, I don’t love… I LOVE IT!” Visit www.fiatcanada.com for more information. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Cold weather riding tips for bikers The arrival of cooler temperatures means motorcycle enthusiasts should have a plan in place for their vehicles. Although fall sees many riders pack their bikes into the garage to wait out the winter, many others see no reason to quit the great outdoors just because colder weather is on the way. No matter which path riders take and when they take it, preparation is essential when riding motorcycles. Here are a few pointers for riders to consider once

the leaves have started to change color. Layer up Layering clothing is a key component of riding a motorcycle in colder temperatures. Many people are not very active on the back of a bike, so they will not generate enough heat on their own. Layering clothing will take the bite out of frosty winds and any precipitation that happens to be falling. Layer clothing so that you will feel comfortable, maybe even a bit warm

when you are just standing around outdoors. A first layer of thermal or fleece is a good idea. Then layer other materials as needed for comfort. Just do not wear so many layers that your mobility is compromised. If layers are not keeping you warm enough, invest in heated clothing. The outermost layer you wear should be weatherand wind-resistant. Wind chill can quickly sap your energy and cut your ride considerably. Leather cloth-

ing will fit the bill in most cases, but a rain suit or some other waterproof material also may be necessary at times. Leaves Leaves can be a significant hazard to riders in the fall. Damp leaves can make a slippery mess of roads, particularly on turns and curves. Avoid all piles of leaves, as you do not know what may be hiding beneath them. Consider wet leaves as dangerous as black ice, as

soggy leaves can be just as slippery. Salt and sand Road maintenance crews will use sand and salt to keep roads clear when snow and ice forms. Avoid riding on salty roads because the salt can corrode chrome and paint. If you choose to do any winter riding, apply a coat of wax to all parts of the motorcycle before going for a ride. This will help protect it and enable any salt to be easily wiped off after riding. Standing water If it rains or snows lightly after an extended period of dryness, oils in the road can come to the surface, making roads quite slick. In addition, stay on the lookout for puddles and other standing water. While motorcycle tires are good for displacing water, they

still can hydroplane. Stay focused when riding on wet surfaces. Foraging animals One potential hazard riders may not consider is wildlife. Harvested crops reduce easy food sources, and animals may be on the move looking for food. Deer can be pushed out of fields by hunters. A collision with a deer can damage a car, never mind a motorcycle. Always use caution in rural areas, particularly at dawn and dusk. Winterizing If you choose to store your bike when the weather starts to get cold, remember to put a fuel stabilizer in the tank, fill the tank with gas and hook the battery up to a battery tender. This will ensure the bike is ready to hit the road when the temperatures warm up.

Make the most of road trips to enjoy fall foliage Jaunts to view fall foliage are popular excursions come autumn. The vivid color on display in forests and parks is simply too much for many motorists to resist. Though nature’s beauty is often on display regardless of geography, some locales tend to boast more beauteous backdrops and picturesque landscapes than others. The key is to visit during peak viewing times. Leaves begin to change earlier in the northernmost latitudes. For example, much of Canada and portions of the northern United States begin to witness changes in foliage in late September, whereas regions further south must wait until October to see those changes. Mid-October is when peak times are most prevalent for the greatest portion of the United States. Travelers in North

Dakota and Wyoming can view fall foliage at this time. Autumn coloring persists until late October and early November in certain areas, including the southeastern and central regions of the United States. When planning a road trip to see fall foliage, pay attention to local weather and foliage reports. Remember, road trips are quite popular this time of year, and municipal parks may be quite crowded on the weekends. If you can spare time off during the week, it may work to your advantage to cruise around when traffic is less congested. Bring along maps or a GPS system so that you can travel to multiple areas. Autumn leaves can be enjoyed from a car, but they are equally enjoyable when experienced on a hiking trip. Pack a bagged lunch and picnic in

a quiet spot, and you’re bound to spot squirrels and other wildlife gathering up food reserves in preparation for the winter weather. While the foliage is impressive enough on its own, the science behind this awesome display of color is something to behold as well. During the spring and summer, leaves produce most of the food necessary for the tree’s growth. Cells inside of the leaves contain chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight, turning it into sugars and starch that the tree uses for food. In addition to green chlorophyll, other pigments specific to the types of trees are present. These pigments are generally masked by the large amount of chlorophyll present during warm weather. When autumn arrives, changes in the duration of sunlight result in the gradual decrease of chloro-

phyll and the breakdown of residual chlorophyll in the leaves as the trees prepare to stop food production for the cold hibernation. Other chemical changes take place as the leaves prepare for winter, and these mix with chlorophyll residue to produce various shades of colors. Weather, light and water supply will influence the shades of colors as well. Rainy weather makes them more vivid. While the colors are appearing, a special layer of cells develops, and this layer gradually severs the tissues of the leaf from the branches before the leaves fall to the ground. The best days to see leaves are those days that are cool and dry. Leaves that fall on roadways and are dampened by rain can be very slippery, so it is important to exercise caution while driving.

Four great classics for under $25,000 By Rob Sass

The big stories out the of classic car world today are the multi-million dollar rarities that will be offered for sale at the big auctions in Monterey, Ca. With those cars making headlines, it’s easy to forget that there isn’t a millionaires-only policy when it comes to classic cars. Here are four favourite all-American classics that can still be

had for less than the price of a loaded new Ford Focus: 1948-49 Cadillac Series 61 Club Coupe: The ’48 Cadillacs were the first all-new Caddies after the end of WWII (the 1946-47 cars were similar to the 1942 model), and they were dropdead gorgeous with the first of the fighter plane-inspired tail fins that would grow to near mutant proportions by 1959. As elegant as any Bentley of the era, the ’49

model was the first with Cadillac’s modern overhead valve V-8. 1961-63 Ford Thunderbird: The third generation T-Bird is arguably the prettiest. The epitome of jet-age, midcentury modern style, it was dubbed “the bullet bird” for its streamlined shape. Nice coupes are particularly reasonable, and with a little searching, decent convertibles can be found for $25,000 or less.

Four great classics for under $25,000 continued from page B12

1964-66 Ford Mustang: The first generation Mustang which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has clearly aged beautifully, looking just as fresh today as it did in April of 1964 at its New York World’s Fair introduction. Prices seem to be firming up, but sixcylinder coupes and convertibles are still available at a reasonable price.

1927-31 Ford Model A: Like movie sequels, few automakers have had the ability to follow up one blockbuster with another of equal magnitude. The Model A was “The Godfather II” to the Model T’s “The Godfather.” If you look at American period photos from the 1930s-40s, it sometimes seems like there was nothing else on the road. They can still provide reliable transportation even in the

21st century. Amazingly, this piece of automotive history is still affordable. Tudor sedans range from $15,000 to $20,000 and roadsters $20,000 to $25,000.
