Troy Monkman led the pack around the 100 Mile Marsh during the annual Terry Fox Run, which started at the South Cariboo Visitor Centre, on Sept. 14. While the number of participants and the donations were down slightly this year, organizer Shannon Pennicott said she was still pleased with how the event went.

Folks will be eager to learn the results of the British Columbia public school teachers vote slated for yesterday (Sept. 18) on whether they accept the deal that would see schools reopen for classes within days. Meanwhile, B.C. Teacher's Federation (BCTF) president Jim Iker says it looks positive, as its executive committee is recommending ratification through a “yes” vote by its union members. On Sept. 16, following several days of closeddoor negotiations with mediator Vince Ready at the bargaining table, BCTF representatives signed an agreement-in-committee with the BC Public School Employers’ Association. “The tentative agreement will provide new support for students, ensure there are more specialist and classroom teachers in schools working with children, and protect teachers’ constitutional rights as the court case continues,” says Iker. “Thanks to the courageous stand teachers took on the picket lines and the strong support of parents and other unions, B.C. teachers were able to get new money invested in schools and reach a mutually agreed-to process to deal with any future court decision on class size, class composition and staffing levels.” The several key achievements for teachers and students include fair pay for teachers teaching full weeks on call, an annual education fund, several hundred new teaching positions each year and improvements in salary and extended health benefits. A significant grievance remedy fund will also be used as a one-time payment to teachers and to improve elementary preparation time. While some districts are scheduled to have a professional development day on Monday, the School District#27 (SD27) Pro-D day happens later, on Sept. 26. Providing teachers have ratified the agreement, SD27 superintendent Mark Thiessen says all its own public schools in the Cariboo Chilcotin will resume Monday (Sept. 22) for a half day in the morning.

Carol Munro of 100 Mile House won last year’s Wildlife-In-Focus photography contest Grab your camera before heading out for weekend adventures in beautiful British Columbia and you could be one of this year’s BC SPCA Wildlife-InFocus Photography Contest winners. Last year, Carol Munro of 100 Mile House won for her photo of a fawn in backyard habitat. Now in its sixth year, the Wildlife-In-Focus Photography Contest is open to all amateur photographers, who must submit images digitally by Sept. 30. The contest supports

the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) on southern Vancouver Island, where nearly 2,500 orphaned and injured wild animals are cared for every year. “B.C. is such a scenic province with such a diverse range of wild animals. We want to help our province’s shutter bugs showcase the amazing beauty that we’re so lucky to experience,” says Sara Dubois, chief scientific officer for the BC SPCA. “Whether entering the Wild Settings category or Backyard

The Lodge nominated for 100 Best Buildings Contest The Architecture Foundation of BC launched B.C.’s 100 Best Buildings Contest at the recent Buildex 2014 event. The purpose of the contest is to recognize the impact and influence that buildings have had over the past 100 years. The foundation invited folks to share and celebrate their favourite building regardless of purpose, age or materials and received nominations online. Each submission included a photograph of the building, its address and a name associated with the building. The Lodge in 100 Mile House was one of the buildings nominated for the British Columbia Interior category and now it is time for folks to vote for The Lodge before the deadline at 4 p.m. on Sept. 28. The website address is http://www.architecturefoundationbc.ca/best-buildings-entries-for-voting/. The Lodge is #255 in the BC Interior Nominations section. At the end of the voting period, the top 25 in each region will be submitted to a judging panel whose members will choose the top 3 from each region. The winning buildings will receive award plaques.

It certainly makes it hard for judges to choose the winners!” Photos entered in previous contests have been featured in the BC SPCA’s Animal Sense and Bark! magazines, as well as in BC SPCA educational materials, local newspapers, websites and social media – a testament to the calibre of the photos that are entered. Louisiana Hayride coming to town

Established in 1948, the Louisiana Hayride was a musical variety show performed at the Shreveport, Louisiana Municipal Auditorium and broadcast live over KWKH Radio. It was best known for giving unknown artists a chance to perform, such as Hank Williams, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Kitty Wells, Faron Young and even Elvis Presley. Well, that Louisiana Hayride show comes back to life with the extraordinary vocal ability and superb musicianship of the cast of this Louisiana Hayride Tribute Show at Martin Exeter Hall in 100 Mile House on Sept. 27, starting at 7:30 p.m. You’ll be taken back in time and experience what was one of the most influential shows in music history. You will chuckle at the antics of Hank Williams and your toes will be tapping when he sings his big hits. When Tammy Wynette steps out, you’ll know why she was a country superstar. Oh yes, and then there’s Willie Nelson. Let’s just say you won’t want to miss that. And just when you think it couldn’t get any better, out walks Patsy Cline. Her magical voice will send shivers up your spine. This extraordinary show also features Roy Orbison, who will have you dancing in your seat. Woven throughout the songs are fascinating tidbits of information, delightfully presented by your host and creator of the show, Lori Risling. The cast of multi-talented musicians include William Brookfield on double keyboard, guitar, banjo and vocals. You’ll be absolutely delighted with Brookfield’s stellar recreation of songs by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Waylon Jennings. Mike Melnichuk adds stand-up bass, electric guitar and incredibly smooth vocals when he treats the audience to songs by Faron Young, Red Foley and Merle

Gil Risling will appear as Roy Orbison.

Haggard. Gil Risling adds electric and acoustic guitar, and amazing vocals when in character as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Roy Orbison. In addition to these talented musicians, Andrea Anderson returns as Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette. Also new to this show will be a tribute to Glen Campbell. “People love this type of music and they love the stories we tell,” says Gil Risling. Since its inception almost five years ago, the Louisiana Hayride tribute show has been

steadily growing in popularity. “The word is out there,” says Risling. “We have people booking

their holidays so they can travel to see our show again. It’s incredible!” You won’t want to miss this extraordinary evening of fun when the Louisiana Hayride rolls into 100 Mile House. The show will take you on a magical journey and it is a delight from start to finish. You love the songs, you will love the stories! Don't miss this great show at Martin Exeter Hall (behind the Red Coach Inn in 100 Mile House on Sept. 27, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person and are available at Donex, Pharmasave and 108 Mile Supermarket by calling 250-791-6699. Barkerville storage project underway Historic town can continue protecting valuable artifacts from extreme weather

On Sept. 6, a group consisting of the Barkerville Heritage Trust board of directors, representatives of a number of campaign donors and sponsors, members of Barkerville’s summer interpretive staff, and interested visitors to the site gathered in front of “the barns” to celebrate the official opening of the new Barkerville Reserve Collection Storage facility, and bring words of encouragement from several of the project’s key Phase 2 supporters. “The Historic Town of Barkerville is a treasured heritage site and an economic generator for the Cariboo region,” said Cariboo-Prince George MP Dick Harris. “This project will ensure long-term preservation and protection of valued artifacts. “The Barkerville Heritage Trust continues to provide the highest standard of care to the buildings, artifacts and collections in this living history museum, and I am thrilled to see our government’s support for this project.” In addition to funding provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage’s

Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, an important Phase 2 contribution was also made by the Rotary Club of Prince George. “The Rotary Club of Prince George is pleased

to be able to assist the Barkerville Heritage Trust by donating $10,000 to their Reserve Collections Storage Campaign for the Butterfield and Lowhee Barns Storage Project,” said Rotary representative Chris Calder. “The Rotary Club of Prince George believes that Barkerville Historic Town is a great educational and historical attraction in the area and we are happy that our support helps to preserve and improve Barkerville for future generations to enjoy.” The Department of Canadian Heritage and the Rotary Club of Prince

One of the happy burdens of being Western North America’s largest historic site involves finding adequate storage solutions for nearly 200,000 artifacts and other pieces of gold rush ephemera that have been collected and catalogued by the curatorial team at Barkerville Historic Town since its provincial heritage designation in 1958. Over the past 56 years, Barkerville has managed the seemingly impossible feat of keeping an irreplaceable assortment of 19th and early-20th century antiques safe and secure creativity and costeffectively throughout summer and winter seasons that can see temperatures range from 35 to minus-40 C in a few short months. Despite fluctuations in heat and cold, however, it’s really the relative changes

in humidity faced by heritage buildings in a sub-alpine location that has the potential to wreak havoc on the more sensitive items in Barkerville’s collection. In 2012, as part of the National Historic Site’s 150th anniversary legacy celebrations, Barkerville began implementing a plan to solve its humidity concerns by spearheading the Barkerville Reserve Collection Storage Campaign. The project, which eventually saw the retrofitting of two sizable early-20th century structures on Barkerville’s back street – the Lowhee and Butterfield Barns – with newly installed, museum-quality rollaway shelving units and a humidistatically controlled heating system ideal for Barkerville’s mountainous climate, would require the financial support and in-kind contributions of key national, provincial, and local stakeholders who understood the importance of Barkerville’s unique museological situation. Thankfully, project partners were keen to help once the campaign was underway, and “Phase 2” of the Barkerville Reserve Collection Storage Campaign has now reached an important milestone.

Nate Parchomchuk, 7, of Red Deer, Alberta was visiting 108 Mile Ranch residents grandma Audrey and grandpa Don Parchomchuk at Horsefly Lake in August when he hooked on to this 12.5-pound lake trout near Chumly’s Bluff. Grandpa had to help bring the fish in and was all smiles when it was finally in the boat. Nate’s cousin, Ava Downie, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was very interested in the fish’s large teeth.

This placard carried by local teacher Jean Swann, depicting Premier Christy Clark in caricature with her ears plugged to evade the teachers’ voice, was among the many signs toted by teachers at a rally outside the South Cariboo Visitor Centre in 100 Mile House on Sept. 15. The teachers are voting today (Sept. 18) on the ratification of a tentative deal reached with provincial government on Sept. 16.

There were long lineups for the BrandSource Family Home Furnishings by invitation Retirement/Going Out Of Business Sale on Sept. 10. The parking lot at the Pinkney Complex on Horse Lake Road was packed that day, and the store has been busy every day since then.

Kevin Stewart, a Calgary resident formerly of 100 Mile House, sent this ball into the outfield at Lumberman's Park during a softball tourney to benefit the 100 Mile House and District Minor Hockey Association on Sept. 13.

Scarrow, Case shoot lowest

Thirty-two players, some in wacky attire, went for closest to the pin and longest drives, while recording the best low scores, during a cold but sunny 108 Ladies Club round at the 108 Golf Resort on Sept. 9. Judy Scarrow, with a

birdie on her scorecard, shot lowest gross in the first flight, followed by Deb Case. Char Wahnschaff and Joanne Garrow shot lowest net in the first flight. The second flight saw Julietta Morete fire low gross, followed by

Carol Lidstone. Maureen Pinkney was the lowest-net shooter in the second flight, with Shannon Knapp in second. Eileen King and Sharon Thompson were the lowest gross shooters in the third flight.

Dozens let fly at 108 Golf Resort The 108 Men’s Club round saw 51 golfers on Sept. 10. After nine holes at the 108 Golf Resort, it was first flight shooters Bill Harris and Chris Stevens tied for lowest gross score with 37. Lee Hansen (35) and Matt McNeil (36) fired low net in the first flight. In the second flight, Jamie Crellin (41) and John Kuharski (42) shot lowest gross, while Karam Parsad (34) and Len Van Drimmelen (35) shot low net. Keith Pearson (40) was the best in the third flight, with Steve Brown (42) behind him. Rick Lunsted (33) and Steve Randell

(34) shot lowest net in the third flight. The fourth flight saw Dan Hadden (43) and Garry Grosso (44) score lowest gross. Ken Brennan (33) and Wayne Kidwell (34) shot low net in the fourth flight. Shane Wilkie, Crellin, Pearson and Hadden won deuces. Closest to the pin shooters were Harris on No. 8, Crellin on No. 4, Jack Rausch on No. 3 and Brennan on No. 7. Harris cranked the big drive on No. 7. Larry Molnar hit longest off the box on No. 2. Rausch ripped it on No. 1. Kidwell hit longest on No. 3.

Laverne Martin and Angela Batahla shot lowest net scores in the third flight. “The wine challenge was ‘different shoes’,” explains Thompson. “And we also picked up extra points from last week’s [wine challenge] when we were rained out, which was ‘crazy hat’. So we did see some very crazy hats and different shoes. Next week’s

wine challenge is ‘fashion faux-pas’. That could be fun!” Scarrow, on No. 5, fired closest to the pin. Pinkney, on No. 3, got her shot closest. King shot closest to the pin on No. 4. Heather Matsuda punched the longest drive on No. 6. Pinkney hit long on No. 2. Wendy Foster hit the longest drive on No. 1.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you have plenty of motivation to get a project started. All you need is some help to get things off the ground. Others will be inspired by your enthusiasm. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, others seem to spend time in the spotlight, but you’re more comfortable spending time in the shadows. Make the most of this time for quiet reflection. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you may be anxious to try a new hobby this week, but don’t know which direction to go. Get some recommendations from friends about what keeps them busy. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Sometimes it is difficult for you to talk about your feelings, Virgo. You want to present a brave front, but you’re only human and should let others in this week. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, staying the course may be a challenge this week. Too many things are pulling you in different directions. You’ll be successful if you get a foothold in one thing. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Work associates may not be holding up their end of the deal, Scorpio. You’re content to help out once in a while but not take on the work of everyone else.

BC Hydro offers fridge buy-back program BC Hydro estimates there are secondary or spare fridges in nearly 40 per cent of homes throughout British Columbia. These unused or underused fridges cost homeowners more than $34 million a year in electricity costs. Refrigerators are one of the most energy consuming appliances in a home because they run 24 hours a day. One fridge alone costs customers up to $90 a year in electrical costs to use. Almost 380,000 B.C. households keep an extra fridge. Through the Refrigerator Buy-Back program, BC Hydro is offering to collect and recycle spare fridges free-of-charge for residential customers, and rewards them for it. Customers can save the expense of recycling an old spare fridge, and receive a $30 credit on their electricity bill. If all the secondary fridges in B.C. homes were recycled, there would be enough energy saved to power all the homes in a city the size of Chilliwack for an entire year. The Refrigerator Buy-Back program has collected nearly 375,000 fridges since it began in 2003. To register for pickup, customers can complete the fridge buy-back application by Googling bchydrofridgebuybackprogram.

Purple Loosestrife: aggressive and prolific

Invasive plant eliminates thousands of hectares of wetland annually

Introduced to North America in the water ballast of a European ship in the 1800s, and by bee-keepers for its ability to create a fine quality honey, Purple Loosestrife is an invasive plant that eliminates hundreds of thousands of hectares of wetlands every year. Even though it is considered a wetland perennial, this invasive plant is adapting to a variety of habitats and invading drier sites such as pastures and croplands. Often confused with Fireweed, Purple Loosestrife has dense spikes of showy pinkpurple flowers with five to six petals, atop a four sided stem. A single plant can produce more than 2.5 million seeds per year that can lay dormant for many years. Seeds are spread by moving water, wind, wildlife and waterfowl as well as by humans. In addition to the spread of this plant by seed, it also spreads by root fragments. Purple Loosestrife is aggressively crowding out native vegetation, threatening biodiversity and rare plant species in the process. As native vegetation decreases, so

too does wildlife due to the loss of important food sources and habitat. It is important to keep this species from

establishing and causing widespread negative impacts in the region. Please do not purchase, trade or grow Purple Loosestrife. There are

many alternatives that can be used that are native to our area that do not cause such a detrimental effect on our environment. If you do have Purple Loosestrife, it is important to treat it in a manner that is not going to cause further spread. Clip seed heads prior to seed and bag any plant material as well as seeds in a heavy plastic bag and dispose of in a designated invasive plant bins at the Williams Lake, 100 Mile House or Quesnel landfill sites. If you have any questions or concerns about Purple Loosestrife or need some assistance in the identification or management, contact the Cariboo Regional District’s Invasive Plant Management team at 250-392-3351, or toll free 1-800-665-1636, or visit the website at cariboord.ca.

Representative and minister align on adoption on finding the best path forward to providing safe homes for their children.” Consistent with the recommendations the province’s recent investment of $2 million

aimed at increasing the number of adoption placements to 300 and the number of transfer of guardianship placements to 144 by March 31, 2015. Ten adoption agencies throughout

the province received funding to achieve the ministry’s goal of increased permanency through adoption and guardianship placements for children and youth in care.

More than 1,300 B.C. children in government care were eligible for adoption in 2012/13, with 205 adoption placements during that time period. Over a sixyear period beginning

in 2007, overall annual adoption placements by MCFD declined. Meanwhile, the number of newly approved adoptive homes has fallen, from 386 in 2005/06 to 213 in 2012/13.

diffused responsibility. 2. That MCFD work with stakeholders to implement an ongoing, high-profile provincial adoption awareness campaign and recruitment strategy to increase the number of adoptions of children in care. 3. That MCFD make legislative changes to require and support external oversight and public reporting of adoption or alternative permanency plans on an annual basis. 4. That MCFD, in immediate partnership with First Nations and Aboriginal communities, including delegated Aboriginal agencies, take specific measures to improve rates of adoption and other permanency planning for Aboriginal children in care. 5. That MCFD develop and implement a quality assurance program for adoptions that reviews, assesses and monitors adoption practice and outcomes for children in care, including service quality and outcomes for prospective and approved adoptive families. 6. That MCFD develop key performance measures and targets to track timely permanency, including adoption placements, for children in care and timely approvals for prospective adoptive parents. “Considering the vast over-repres ent at ion of Aboriginal children among B.C.’s in-care population, we must find ways to encourage adoptive First Nations families to step forward,” Turpel-Lafond said. “I appeal to the leadership of B.C.’s First Nations communities to help this generation avoid what has greatly harmed past generations – the removal of children from their communities and their culture.” We understand the sensitivities that many Aboriginal communities have with adoption, said Cadieux. “We are committed to working with each community

Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen TurpelLafond and Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux recently announced a joint commitment to dramatically increase adoption rates for children in the province’s care. “Right now, at any given time, there are 1,000 children in British Columbia government care waiting to be adopted,” TurpelLafond said. “Some of them wait for years; some are never adopted. B.C. can do better than this, and I’m very pleased to join Minister Cadieux in taking this important step toward improving the lives of some of our most vulnerable young people.” Promoting adoption is of particular interest to me, and the ministry has recently been focusing efforts in this area, said Cadieux. “Working with the representative underscores how important adoption is to those of us who work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children, which is why the premier, as part of my mandate letter, is requiring I present options to cabinet that will strengthen the provincial adoption program.” The joint commitment is underpinned by Turpel-Lafond’s release of Finding Forever Families: A Review of the Provincial Adoption System, a report that recommends six steps to assist the province in improving its adoption and permanency planning outcomes, which the ministry commits to working on. Recommendations include: 1. That the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) administer its permanency planning and adoptions services as a central, provincial program under the authority of the Director of Child Welfare, thereby eliminating the ministry’s current practice of regional decision-making and
