Kettle boiling over MMBC Tamara Hynd
West Kootenay Advertiser
The Regional District of Central Kootenay gave the Ministry of Environment’s Bob McDonald a strong message Thursday — they want the RDCK to be at the top of the waiting list for Multi Material BC (MMBC) services and they want their taxpayers’
money back. McDonald, the manger of packing and print paper program implementation for the ministry, spoke to the board last week to update them on the MMBC program that the government legislated across the province on May 19. He admitted the roll out of the pro-
gram has been a problem and could not tell the board when RDCK residents can expect to receive services that are supposed to be funded by companies producing packaging and print material in what has been set up as an industry stewardship program. The problem, according to McDon-
ald, is many companies, large and small, have not paid their fees and the intended not-for-profit recycling program cannot function without them. RDCK board chair John Kettle said the program has been an “incredible disservice” to the communities of the RDCK. MMBC is collecting

the fees but jurisdictions are not seeing the services, he said. “Our taxpayers are paying $1 million [for recycling] and other people in the province, specifically the Lower Mainland, are getting this for free.” Area D director Andrew Shadrack held up a large blue bag full of recyclables as he said, “This is the recyclables not collected and is going into landfills and we are paying for it [to be recycled].” “When will [the program] be rolled out?” he asked McDonald. “Taxpayers are paying at the till and the rural areas are subsidizing your areas. This puts rural areas at a disadvantage.” Later Shadrack noted the Village of Kaslo has a curbside contract with MMBC. “But it does not include the material that should be recycled that I held up or Styrofoam,” he said. “The nearest depots and only depots that I am aware of in the Kootenays are in Cranbrook and Trail. I will keep saving the

material until I can recycle it.” Garry Jackman, Area A director said, “We can’t drag this out. Impose a penalty. The [producers] need a monetary incentive [through fining]. These are big companies.” McDonald said the next step is to publicly publish the names of the companies who are not paying. “The public companies don’t want to be shamed,” he said. McDonald later told the media the biggest problem with companies not paying their fees is the cumbersome enforcement process. The program allows for a parent company to pay for all their subsidiaries or there is the option that each sub company pay separately. The challenge has been notifying each company. He said many times smaller companies thought the parent company had paid the fees or vice versa. McDonald said the legislation allowed for this and for enforcement. “The ministry process is slow but thor-

ough,” he said. The follow up is arduous and has been a largest part of the biggest problem in the program roll out. The time it has taken to contact all the companies is huge. He said more often than not, when the companies are contacted, they usually pay up. Only non-payers will go on the list. “We’d like a copy of that list,” said Kettle. “Seventy five hundred-plus shoppers makes a difference. We will draft another letter of this discussion and send it to the ministry.” He then urged McDonald to look at the books of MMBC. Earlier in the meeting, McDonald said MMBC is claiming lack of funds to offer the service east of the Lower Mainland yet when asked by a director if the Ministry of Environment had looked at MMBC’s books, McDonald said the ministry had not. “They are crying poverty yet they haven’t seen the books?” Kettle asked.

Bringing important peace and social justice issues to the forefront in the region, the Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace has embarked on a new season of lectures and peace cafés. Since 2007, the Mir Lecture Series and Mir Peace Cafés have brought a diverse selection of local and international speakers to the West KootenayBoundary. Over the next few months that tradition will continue with seven events to mark in your calendar. “These events are important because they bring the community into the conversations and raise awareness about important issues related to peace and social justice,” says CaraLee Malange, Coordinator of Mir Centre Community Programs. “We want to stimulate inquiry and hope that people are inspired by listening to people like Steven Lewis or James Orbinski or Chris Hedges. Not only to understand more about the issues, but to engage in the issues more fully so that our citizens are empowered to participate more effectively in the solutions to the complex social, political and economic challenges underlying social injustice and threats to peace.” Canadian humanitarian Lewis was the first marquee speaker to be brought to the region under a Selkirk College endowment that was years in the mak-
ing. Since that time, the ongoing series of lectures has allowed for speakers such as David Suzuki, Izzeldin Abuelaish, Justice Murray Sinclair and Samantha Nutt to come face-to-face with locals. “Having good insight from these world class speakers about what the real and structural challenges are behind these peace and social justice related issues,” says Malange. This year’s series peace cafés and lectures have already begun with a visit by Tibetan Buddhist scholar and artist Lama Losang Samten who spent a week in the Nelson area earlier this month. Samten took part in a peace café at the United Church in Nelson where he spoke about his time working as an advisor on the Martin Scorsese movie Kundun. The series continues over the next few months with the following events (see selkirk.ca for details of times and locations): October 2: Peace Café Guatemalan feminist and performance artist Sandra Moran will speak on “Confronting the Multiple Systems of Oppression in the Path to Peace.” October 9: Peace Café Selkirk College Instructor Denis Kleine and the Peace Symbol Project October 16: Peace Café North & South: The Documentary. November 7: Mir Lecture - Award winning Canadian author Lawrence

Walter Popoff, Area H director, suggested that “We be moved up in the queue. We want to be compensated while we’re waiting.” Slocan director Hillary Elliott said a Slocan Valley business serving as a bottle depot has recently gotten notice that certain tetra paks are
no longer recyclable. “Residents are paying twice and seeing a reduction of services,” she said. In his final comments to McDonald, Kettle said, “We continue to tax $1 million to our taxpayers. Make sure we are at the top of the list. We’ve suffered through this and we want to be treated
P
fairly. We are not second class citizens. We carry our share.” He suggested that as the messenger, McDonald carry their comments back to the ministry. Kettle said to media later that when the program was first presented to the RDCK, the requirements prohibited the RDCK from signing
on. “They required we fence all our current depots and man them,” he said, at a cost that would have been prohibitive. He said 90 per cent of recyclables would have had to go into landfills as the MMBC program was not set up yet. “Ninety per cent is just not acceptable,” he said. “We had to make a
tough decision. We’re not the wealthiest but we’re doing the right thing.” While it waits to sign an agreement with MMBC, recycling in the regional district continues under the status quo with a depot system, while Nelson, Nakusp, Kaslo, and Castlegar have curbside pick-up.

Seventieth in a somewhat alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names You wouldn’t guess it from their names, but Gilpin and Glade both figure in Doukhobor history. The former, 13 km east of Grand Forks, is named for Ranulph Robert Gilpin (18611953), a Nova Scotian who established a ranch on the creek that also bears his name. The Dewdney Trail passed through it. According to Jim and Alice Glanville in Grand Forks: The First 100 Years, Gilpin arrived around 1884 and soon became a customs officer — his cabin/ customs house is now behind Gallery 2 in Grand Forks. He sold his ranch in 1904 but remained in the area. The earliest mention of Gilpin as a place name is in the Boundary Creek Times of March 13, 1897: “Two weeks ago the coach capsized between here and Gilpin’s …” It was also a stop on the Columbia and Western Railway line built the following year. When the Northwest Boundary Survey came through the area in 1859 they established an astronomical station slightly to the east of present-day Gilpin called Camp Statapoosten, or Statapoostin, presumably an Okanagan-Colville word, although its meaning is not known. American surveyor Joseph S. Harris wrote to his mother: “[O]n November 1, the party started for this point (Statapoostin), which they reached

yesterday.” The name didn’t stick. In 1937, Sons of Freedom released from the Piers Island Penitentiary started a shanty village at Gilpin. It remains a small residential community with the name enshrined in Gilpin Road. Glade, on the Kootenay River 17 km northeast of Castlegar, was originally known as Passmore or Passmore’s Siding after rancher Richard Passmore (1859-fl. 1911). (We’ll discuss whether he was also the Slocan Valley community’s namesake later in this series.) After community Doukhobors bought nearly 1,100 acres in the area, the Nelson Daily News of April 13, 1911 reported: “With the coming week, the Doukhobor society will again have a settlers
sawmill in operation down the river upon their holdings. Since the recent burning down of the original mill [on March 16], and the erection of a new one, which has just been completed, the name of the locality has been changed by the CPR from Passmore to Glade.” The new name reflected the dictionary definition “an open space in a forest” but didn’t catch on immediately, for the Winnipeg Free Press reported on April 25: “[The Doukhobors] have at present two different contracts from the CPR for 100,000 ties to be delivered at Trail and Passmore’s Siding … The community also owns 1,400 acres at Passmore Creek, which is situated on the Kootenay river between Castlegar and Slocan Junction.” (Passmore Creek became Glade Creek.) Glade was officially added to the CPR timetable on June 4, 1911 and was originally only on the north side of the river, while the Doukhobor settlement on the south side was called Dolina Plodorodnaya — meaning “fertile valley” — and later just Plodorodnoye. The Russian name eventually fell by the wayside (although it’s included on a welcome sign erected a few years ago) and the community became better known as Glade. Today the name usually refers to the south side of the river, although the Glade store is on the north side. A post office was announced for Glade in 1942 but for some reason never opened. Glade remains a distinctive residential community by virtue of its cable ferry.

For me, it was abut getting back on track. “When I joined Take a Hike it didn’t take me long to figure out this program was about more than just getting kids outside. For me, it was about getting back on track,” said one local student. The program has enjoyed 14 hugely successful years in Vancouver and an equally impressive expansion to the West Kootenays last September. Following in the Vancouver program’s footsteps, Take a Hike West Kootenay introduces students to outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, canoeing and snowshoeing, and will support students in developing valuable communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. “School opening is such an important time for our at-risk youth to reconnect with staff and peers and re-establish a positive support network following the summer,” said Nathan Robinson, District Principal of Alternate Programs at the Kootenay-Columbia School District. With fall fast approaching, black bears are beginning to fatten up in preparation for hibernation. “Bears can double their weight in a matter of weeks,” says BC SPCA animal welfare educator Meghann Cant. “They need to rapidly build up their fat reserves in order to survive the winter.”
“Hundreds of ‘problem’ bears are destroyed by Conservation Officers every year as a result.” Given the danger faced by people and by black bears, human-bear conflicts deserve our very close attention.
For bears looking to bulk up, human foods – like those found in compost piles and garbage bins – are an attractive option. “Human foods are rich in calories and, compared to natural foods such as berries or nuts, require less time and energy to obtain,” explains Cant. “As a bear, why spend hours foraging for acorns when you can simply knock over a garbage can and get all the calories you need from a few leftovers?”
• Keep garbage secured in the house, garage or shed until pick-up day;

Fortunately, conflicts can be reduced by following these tips: • Pick up ripe and fallen fruit from trees and bushes daily; • Harvest garden vegetables as they ripen; • Clean barbecue grills after each use, and store barbecues in a secure area; • Bring pet food dishes inside; • Turn compost regularly, and keep compost bins covered; • Work with neighbours to create a bear-aware neigh bourhood. The key, says Cant, is to change our own behaviour and prevent bears from gaining access to human foods in the first place. “Then, and only then, can we learn to coexist with black bears to help make B.C. a safer place for the both of us.”

ALS challenge could help find a cure Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Joyce Manwell can no longer lift her head to smile at her children or hug her husband of 57 years. The Trail native is too ill to live at home, and now she spends her days in a wheelchair or hospital bed at Talarico Place in Castlegar. In two years she’s gone from a spry 74-year old adventure seeker to a patient stricken with Primary Lateral Sclerosis, which is slower progressive form of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – otherwise known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. There’s currently 400 people across the province stricken with ALS, a progressive degenerative disease of the nerves in the brain and spinal cord that leads to muscle wasting, total paralysis and death. The ALS Society of BC offers a helping hand to those living with the devastating illness and their families because costs for medical equipment alone can quickly exceed $100,000. “The whole reason the ALS Society in BC was formed is because, unfortunately, in British Columbia, when you are diagnosed with ALS, there wasn’t, and still isn’t, a lot of help from the government,” explained Wendy Toyer, the society’s executive director. “So without the existence of our society, just for equipment to allow you to stay at home, and most choose to stay at home, you’re looking at about $140,000 per patient just for equipment needs.” Within two days of receiving a prescription for equipment, the ALS Society, at no cost to the patient, ships out medical equipment that can range from walkers and manual wheelchairs
to high-tech power chairs, patient lifts and electric beds with specialized mattresses. “We own close to $3 million of equipment that we loan out,” said Toyer. “And that’s the core service that started with the ALS Society of BC.” Another essential support the society provides to the ALS patient and caregiver, is free transportation and overnight accommodation in Vancouver, so the patient can been seen by a specialist at the ALS Centre every three months, health permitting. “So you can imagine if you are in Trail, how difficult it would be to get to Vancouver,” explained Toyer. “Especially when you get to the stage that requires a power wheelchair and so on.” Toyer said when the person’s respiratory system becomes too compromised for air travel, the society assembles a mobile clinic, which is a team of specialists that travels to the patient. Often they stay overnight and the following day, provide inpatient training for health care professionals in that community. “They’ll probably see 8 to 10 patients, then the next day provide oneon-one education with health care providers who are caring for our people,” she continued. “That builds relationships and ensures the best quality of care.” Money for the society’s annual $2 million operating budget comes from fundraising, in particular annual “Walk for ALS” events, as well as grants, foundations, and sponsorships. “We also support ALS research,” said Toyer. “Forty per cent of funds raised from walks across Canada, including the ‘Walk for ALS’ in Nelson every year, go to fund research.”
This year, ALS societies across Canada have received millions of unexpected and one-time funds from the social media sensation dubbed the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” that began south of the border and pushed its way north into Canada during the summer months. People of all ages, had a bucket of ice water dumped over their heads and challenged others to do the same, to promote awareness of the disease and encourage donations to research. Once the ice bucket invites went viral, about $13 million was raised in Canada, and the money is still pouring in. Toyer has been invited to join a national committee that is meeting this month to discuss how to allocate the unplanned influx of cash, that in B.C., will be set up in an internally managed fund. “In our case it’s probably about half our annual operating budget,” she said. “So we are going to break that down and if for example, our fundraising has been successful enough to sustain patient services, then we’ll decide what more we can do so that every penny that’s spent will be tracked each year.” ALS symptoms can only be managed, presently the disease is not curable. “I believe in fate,” said Toyer. “I believe that we are getting close to an effective treatment for this disease.” She said “it’s always been about the money and it’s always been about the awareness,” and the ALS Ice Bucket challenge has been the biggest gift of all. “I think this has happened for a reason,” Toyer added. “And I believe with all my heart that we are going to have something really good come out of it.”

Evelyn Campos is tired of people using the ground beside the mailboxes in front of her house as a dumping ground for garbage. The longtime Pass Creek resident has witnessed garbage illegally dumped near the intersection of Pass Creek Road with Broadwater Road. For months now since the snow melted, individuals or families well off enough to buy electronics, fast food, and consumer products of all types have been too lazy to use the available services of Alpine Disposal for their recycling and the Ootischenia Landfill for the disposal of their waste. The dumping appears to be contagious as one pile of garbage seems to attract more garbage from other illegal dumpers. “It is a beautiful community, Campos related. “We have tons of bikers going through here; we have tons have people travelling the Pass Creek Road and if they are going to be seeing this, they are going to think, ‘what kind of community is this?’ For people looking to live here, if there is going to be garbage lying around it will deter them from living here.” She reported her concerns to the regional district and a file was created concerning her case. The garbage in the past has been cleaned up and disposed of by concerned neighbours. Not only is the garbage unsightly and nuisance pollution, but it attracts critters of all sizes to scav-

enge the piles before they have been cleaned up. With recent bear sightings in the neighbourhood illegal dumping only compounds the problem. Kids are now scared to be outside, especially at night, with the sounds of something rustling through the garbage at the end of the driveway. Evelyn Campos has contacted local media, local government, started a Facebook page where other residents can share their support and concerns. With the help of her neighbours she’s erected signs explaining that garbage dumping at this location is not tolerated. This one woman army is not alone as residents’ voices gain momentum in condemning this callous, selfish, uncaring act of abandonment in consumer garbage.

Fresh meat drive TAMARA HYND
West Kootenay Advertiser
It’s hunting season for the West Kootenay Roller Derby league as they look to recruit new skaters, affectionately known as fresh meat, to their league for the 2015 season. The 12-week training program starts with the first meet and greet on October 6 in Castlegar. It’s open to men and women 19 years and older and no experience is necessary as they teach new recruits how to roller skate from the ground up. Cheyanna (“shyRAMasaurus Wrex”) Shypitka, sponsorship and fundraising director of West Kootenay Roller Derby said “Our goal is to reach more potential skaters, which strengthens our league so much more.” Roller derby was first established in the region in 2009 but it’s popularity goes back to the 1930s. Melissa Merritt, derby name “CC” is the league training director with two years of roller derby experience and a deep hockey background. She will lead the fresh meat weekly practice; new skaters will also practice with their future team so they can get to know the ropes. New recruits will learn how to skate, be rink ready, and how to manoeuvre and fall without injury. It is a contact sport after all. Nicole Courson, aka Courtney Shove said new skaters will also learn derby rules and how to play the sport. “ And to help

them decide whether they want to be on a team or be a referee,” she said. “Until more men join, there is not enough for a co-ed league but men are encouraged to participate as a referee or as a coach. We’ll teach anyone who’s willing to learn how to skate.” Merritt changed the training schedule as she thought it would be be beneficial for the newbies to practice once a week together rather than always being amongst seasoned skaters. “It can be a bit intimidating otherwise,” said Courson. Since the resurgence in 2010 that saw the league explode from two teams to four, each team expects see two to five new recruits. With a minimum of 14 skaters per team plus referees and coaches, there are approximately 100 people in the WK league. Courson had been interested in roller derby for years and when
a team got started in Nelson, she jumped at the chance to join. She’s had an athletic background to start and found the sport to be a new challenge. “There’s contact, competition, and a team- building, spirit,” she said. “I make all sorts of friends I wouldn’t know otherwise. It builds confidence by being involved in a non for profit group that is involved in the community and is a challenge sport.” Where do all the creative tough girl names come from? Courson said, “It comes from original roller derby when there were banked tracks that the skaters went around with very little padding. They would be punching each other and throwing chairs at each other and they had these tough girl nick names.” While the punches and chairs have been dropped from current roller derby, the tough girl nick names have held strong. Kootenay Kannibelles is the league travel team for the West Kootenay. The four league teams are Valley Brutality (Salmo and Slocan Valley), Dam City Rollers (Castlegar), Killjoys (Nelson) and the Rossland Trail Roller Girls (Rossland/Trail). “The game itself lends itself to a lot of excitement, “ said Courson. “There are lots of jumps and spins. It’s impressive to watch.” For more information and for registration, go to training@ kootenayrollerderby.com or find them on Facebook at kootenayrollerderby.com.

Three kilometres of new trail opens in Trail LIZ BEVAN
West Kootenay Advertiser
Nearly three kilometres has been added to the trail network in the region, and this time, it is right in Trail. Isaac Saban, president of the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society (KCTS) says this new addition in Sunningdale, across from Teck Operations on the Columbia River, fulfils the society’s promise to have more walking, hiking and biking opportunities in town. “(The 2.8 km addition) addresses our promise where for years we have been saying we are going to put more trails in Trail,” he said during an opening ceremony last Thursday. “Now, we finally have more trails in Trail.” Part of the benefit of having the trails so close to residential areas is easy access. “This is a really important trail for the society,” said Saban. “It hits a lot of our key objectives in terms of being located close to town and where people live. They are able to not have to drive to the trailhead in most cases, but you can actually walk. It also forms the continuation from Miral Heights (in Trail), all the way here (to Sunningdale).” The Sunningdale Trail has been in the works since 2012 and the KCTS is excited to finally have the project completed a ready for use. “It was one trail and initially, we had the funding to get a
certain distance, to the water tower hill (in Sunningdale),” said Hal Harrison, board member with the KCTS. “We have now extended it right to the bottom of the hill. The trailhead is now right on Mariana Crescent right near the bus stop which is something that we have always wanted to do. We started in 2012 and then that carried over to 2013. The final section, going down to Mariana Crescent, was finished this year.” Saban credits Harrison with taking the initiative to make the trail extension happen. “For the nine years I have been involved in the trail society, the first six, we were promising that we would build more trails in the valley,” he said. “It really takes someone to spearhead those efforts and the credit for the network between Miral Heights across to (Sunningdale) really goes to Hal. If it hadn’t been for him, these trails wouldn’t have come together.” The KCTS doesn’t just operate in Trail. The majority of hiking and biking trails managed by the society are in the Rossland area. The new trail in Sunningdale is now part of the large 150-kilometre network, covering both Rossland and the Trail areas. One of the benefits of these pathways, according to Harrison, is the physical benefit. “There is the exercise benefit of course,” he said, adding that it also encourages tour-
ism to the area. “A lot of the Rossland trails are actually an economic driver for the community, especially the Seven Summits
Trail. It is just a good thing for the community in general.” The trails in and around the Greater Trail area are free to
use, says Harrison and are suited for everyone. “I encounter everyone up there (on the trails) – parents, kids,
old folks and even the hard edge athletes,” he said. “It is for everyone and there is no financial barrier to it.” For maps, difficulty

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Five of the best-looking cars ever By Rob Sass
There’s nothing more subjective than the looks of a car. Choose your cliché— “Nobody’s baby is ugly” and “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” there’s an element of truth to all of them and it’s tricky territory to wade into. This list isn’t meant to be the be all end all, just the highly subjective opinions of one writer on a Friday afternoon. Muscle Car — 1970-71 Pontiac Firebird Formula: This one is likely to generate a fair bit of controversy — with so many fantastic muscle cars to choose from, picking just one is impossible. First and second generation Camaros, nearly any
Chevelle, E-body Mopar cars, Cougar Eliminators, AMC’s Javelin, Boss 302s, GTOs all have stellar looks. But that second generation Firebird — specifically the 455 Formula. Yeah, we know that the TransAm was the top of the heap performance-wise, but its looks veer just a little bit over-the-top for some. The Formula, on the other hand, with its twin hood scoops, looks just right from every angle to most eyes. The Pontiac Firebird Formula might just be one of the prettiest American cars ever. Sports Car (coupe) — 1962-64 Ferrari 250GTO: The 250 GTO is less of a car and more of a perfectly harmonious amalgam of every cool styling device
available to someone designing a car in the early 1960s. From the strategically placed curves, Borrani wire wheels, glass-covered headlights and multiple vents and air scoops, to the fastback roofline that ends in an abrupt Kammstyle tail with the faintest hint of a ducktail spoiler, the 250 GTO is drop-dead gorgeous from every angle. It’s no wonder that to buy one of the 39 originals, you’re looking at $50 million or more. Yep, that’s right — fifty, 5-0. Sports Car (convertible) — 1961-67 Jaguar E-Type: As legend goes, the E-Type was so pretty that it made Enzo Ferrari weep when he saw it for the first time in Geneva in 1961. That’s saying a lot,

Not too late to realize that convertible dream By Bob McHugh
Buy now and park it until next spring! With cooler weather ahead, fall can be an opportune time to snag a great deal on that dream-ride convertible you’ve always wanted to own, like the soft-top edition of Chevrolet Camaro. Chevrolet introduced an allnew Camaro Coupe for the 2010 model year and the Camaro Convertible followed a year later. While it shares many similar styling details,
this modern day rebirth of Camaro is longer and wider than the celebrated original ‘67, of the “muscle car” era. Big wheels (18-inch to massive 21-inch rim sizes) are an important design feature of new Camaro and it’s a little taller. The 2011 Camaro Convertible was offered in just LT and SS trim levels. The LT comes with a lightweight and powerful “LFX” 3.6-litre V6 engine. It can generate 323 horsepower and is mated to either a sixspeed manual transmission
or a six-speed automatic. Revised and more realistic new fuel economy (auto) ratings are 12.9 L/100km in city and 8.1 L/100km on highway. A potent 6.2-litre V8 engine (from the Corvette) lies under the hood of Camaro SS. When paired with a six-speed manual it’s tuned to pump out 425 horsepower. A 400 horsepower edition of this same engine (with more low-speed torque and a fuel saving cylinder deactivation system) is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The revised fuel
rating for Camaro SS (auto) is 14.9 L/100km in city and 9.5 L/100km on highway. There is a key engineering difference between Chevrolet’s Camaro and, its nemesis, the Ford Mustang. While both vehicles send gobs of engine power to the rear wheels, Mustang has a rigid rear axle and Camaro has a more sophisticated independent link system with half-shafts and coil springs attached to an isolated sub-frame. In theory, Camaro should be a better riding and handling sports car

but that debate rolls on. A limited edition high-performance Camaro ZL1 arrived in 2012. It came with a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that can produce an outrageous 580 horsepower … and it has obvious collector car potential. A special 45th Anniversary Package was also offered that year. Other than some packing revisions and new colour choices, there were no significant changes to the 2013 or the 2014 model year editions of Camaro. While it may be hard to find
practical reasons to buy a sports car like Camaro, it did make it on the Consumer Reports list of “recommended” good, reliable cars to buy. Camaro Convertible is also even less practical and more expensive than the Coupe. Then again, it’s a hoot to drive, especially with the top down!

Year Edition Expect to Pay Today 2011 LT $22,000 to $26,000 2012 LT $25,000 to $29,000 2013 LT $28,000 to $33,000 2014 LT $33,000 to $38,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed
by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2011 to 2014 Chevrolet Camaro: 2010 to 2014: There is a risk that some drivers may bump the ignition key with their knee and unintentionally move the key from out of the “run” position. Engine power, power braking and power steering would be affected, if this were to occur. Dealers will remove the key blade from the original flip key/transmitter assemblies and provide two new keys and key rings for every original key. 2011/2012: In vehicles equipped with power height adjustable front seats,
a bolt securing the adjuster mechanism may loosen and could fall out, causing the seat to suddenly drop. Dealers will replace the bolt. 2012: The primary or secondary stage of the driver’s airbag may not deploy during a crash. Dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil (This is a condensed series of recalls). 2013: The airbag warning labels may not be permanently affixed to sun visors. Owners sent instructions on how to inspect labels, or may have the inspection performed at a dealer. Where labels are found to be defective, the sun visors will be replaced. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
