The Ladies Club held its Windup Tournament at Marmot Ridge Golf Course, with 37 participants dressed in Hawaiian garb. The format was hidden partners for low gross and first went to Betty Warman and Carol Ohlund, with Rene Zelt and Helen Bailey second, and third going to Deanna Guimond and Sue Pinkerton. Arlene Jongbloets won the putting contest. Carol Ohlund was recognized for shooting the lowest round of the season with a 35.
The battle against gangs in British Columbia has made big advances, but now is not the time to relax, a top B.C. Mountie told a conference on youth gang prevention recently. RCMP Chief Supt. Dan Malo said he believes redoubled community efforts and new policing tactics can further dent organized crime and prevent a resurgence of the gangland bloodbath of five years ago. “We’re down in the statistics,” Malo told delegates in Surrey at the Acting Together gang prevention conference organized by Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “A number of [gangsters] are in jail, a number of them are dead, a number of them have changed their behaviour and others we have forced to change their behaviour.” There have been just three gang-linked murders in B.C. so far this year, way down from 2007 to 2009, when the annual
death toll ran as high as 36. Malo said it’s becoming clear a police strategy of pressuring prolific gangsters to make life uncomfortable and rob them of their power and influence is helping. “In the ‘90s and the 2000s we let people like [gangster] Bindy Johal run crazy. We let the United Nations Gang and the Independent Soldiers run around with hoodies on that said they were all that.” Youth in B.C. cities were recruited and sucked into the vortex of violence “Many of these young kids went from street level bullying to drug trafficking to extortion to contract killing in a matter of a few years, when traditional organized crime takes decades to do that.” Past policing success was measured too much by the number of bad guys jailed or kilograms of cocaine seized, Malo said, and focused heavily on taking out top crime kingpins. Today, he said, more effort
aims to change attitudes and behaviours. “It needs to become part of the fabric of British Columbia that this kind of behaviour is not tolerated. We take our young kids, we turn them into superstars in our communities – not gangsters.” The new endganglife.ca campaign of B.C.’s anti-gang police unit plays on emotions of gangsters with imagery of loved ones left behind after they’re dead. Malo said it worked on one exLower Mainland gangster, who recently agreed to exit the life rather imagine his child having to bury him. The biggest challenge was answering the man’s question of what he would do now to keep earning $6,000 a day. Officers arranged for the ex-gangster to enter a training program for a good-paying job that will pay well. “If they choose to exit that lifestyle, we’re going to help them do that,” he told delegates. “We’re going to support them because
they’re going to change their behaviour.” Community groups can play a huge role in helping build strong character in youth and “give them role models that are not Jamie Bacon.” Malo also wants to put pressure on others who profit from gang activity. “We have to lean on businesses that take straight cash for vehicles,” he said. “We know car rental places that make all their money from renting cars to gangsters. We need to work with them maybe tell them that’s not the right side of the community they need to be in.” While there have been signs of success – Malo also counts the doubling in the price of cocaine in the past couple of years to $60,000 a kilogram, indicating a crimp in supply – there are also trouble spots. Heroin overdoses have spiked in the last six months, he said. “Now is not the time to take our foot off the gas.”

Dan Rowe wanted hunting season off this year, and fishing season after that. The 64-year-old flooring consultant retired recently after 33 years in the business. Rowe worked for United Carpet on Birch Avenue in 100 Mile House and Baron Floors before that, doing installations before moving into the store in 1996. The best part of his job was working with
people, he says. “I enjoy the public. Quite a few people came in to say, ‘happy retirement’. You get to know them and become friends. I have a lot of friends I ice fish with from meeting them in here.” Gold-panning, a trip across Canada, and an Alaska tour are on Rowe’s to-do list now. The things he wanted to do, but never had time for. “It’s nice to be retired. You get tired after a while. I’m lucky the knees are still good.”

Fibre is Magic
Parkside Art Gallery site of textile arts fashion show Area residents Trish Chung and Claudia Ring are hosting a show Fibre is Magic at Parkside Art Gallery, 401 Cedar Ave., in 100 Mile House on Oct. 11. It is a textile arts fashion show, featuring new works by Chung and Ring and guests. It will feature wool articles
made with a “felting” process. Recently, there has been increased interest in the textile art of felting, although it is really an ancient craft used for centuries, for processing wool into a finished cloth. As early as 5000 BC, civilizations used wool they sheered from sheep, alpacas and
lamas, to make durable and warm clothing, including hats, mittens, boots, blankets and coats, from felted wool. Chung says the show’s focus will be on local fibre from local agriculture. Parkside’s doors open at 7 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30.

A comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs, since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher, who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change - and cheese. • Rated G • Length 1:37

Terry Fox Run successful
Participants, donations down a bit, but everyone had fun Ken Alexander Free Press
100 Mile House organizer for the 34th Annual Terry Fox Run Shannon Pennicott says this
year’s event went “pretty good.” She estimates there were 50 participants entered in the event and they raised about $1,200. “The numbers of people and the amount we raised were down a bit from last, but the weather was good, schools are out and people are really busy.” Pennicott adds there were a lot of families
and that is important for the next generation of participants. “We had participants from two years old to 93 years old. That was really great to see.” There is a good volunteer base to operate the Terry Fox Runs throughout the province, she notes. It’s a family run organization and they are very organized, Pennicott says, adding they ship everything out to the

Jump on board the Louisiana Hayride
The Louisiana Hayride Show is coming back to 100 Mile House on Sept. 27. Martin Exeter Hall will come alive with some familiar characters, such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson and Roy Orbison – along with a new character, Tammy Wynette. The audience will also be treated to songs from Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, Red Foley, Merle Haggard and there will be a special tribute to Glen Campbell during this performance. Instrumental in launching the careers of some of the greatest names in music history, The Louisiana Hayride was a live radio show that ran from 1948 to 1960. During its heyday The Hayride was broadcast nationwide, and for a time, it was even heard overseas on Armed Forces Radio.Known as the Cradle of the Stars, some of the numerous music legends who graced the famous stage will appear before your eyes. The multitalented cast of the Louisiana Hayride – in story and song – will draw folks back in time with their fascinating stories about these famous artists and the beautiful music they created. Audience members will think they are witnessing the real thing first hand. Written, and narrated by Lori Risling, the show reproduces the ambiance of those early days magnificently.
File photo
Andrea Anderson is awesome as Loretta Lynn in the Louisiana Hayride show, which this year will be bringing some sensational new songs and stories from many of the most familiar celebrities to Martin Exeter Hall on Sept. 27.
Accompanying the fantastic music, audience members will also be privy to a lot of historical bits of trivia, such as why Roy Orbison wore dark glasses and how did Glen Campbell come to record Wichita Lineman. The Louisiana Hayride will take folks back in time as they listen to those familiar tunes and hear the great folklore in this extraordinary production. This incredible ensemble recreates one of the most influential shows in music history, transporting you back to that magical time when these giant legends were discovered.
“People love this type of music and they love the stories we tell,” says Lori. “Don’t miss this extraordinary evening as the atmosphere of those early days in country music is brought back to life by the exceptionally gifted singers of The Louisiana Hayride.” This show will take the audience on a magical journey. ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, though you are usually up for a conversation with someone you don’t know, this week you could be more conservative. You’ll have future chances to chat.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 You have been on a shopping binge of late, Taurus. If you have unlimited funds, this would not be so problematic. But finances are tight, and you should be more cautious.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you are often an entertaining and fun person to have around. This is why you get so many invitations to parties and other social occasions. Enjoy your fanfare. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Surround yourself with children this week, Cancer. They’ll provide the unedited, honest information you desire right now. It can certainly be eye-opening. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Spend some quality time with a romantic partner this week, Leo. He or she can provide more true affection and companionship than what’s offered by friends. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you deserve credit at the office. If you’re patient, some measure of recognition will come your way this week. It’s a start to getting what you need. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Few people will accuse you of being uncommunicative, Libra. In fact, you’re usually downright chatty. It’s one of the traits people will admire in you this week. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, a new person comes into your life and your attraction to them catches you off guard. It’s okay to flirt, but if you’re already attached to someone, leave it at that.
