CDC receives infrastructure WEDCIIF grant AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter
Things are going to get warmer at the Child Development Centre. Monday the federal government, under the Western Economic Diversification and Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (WEDCIIF) umbrella, announced $33,874 in funding for the centre to upgrade the
heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. “We were very fortunate to receive funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada,” CDC Heidi Kuhn said. “The HVAC system was original to the building making it outdated and inefficient. nounce our government’s support for infrastructure improvement projects in B.C.’s Nechako, North Coast and Cariboo regions,” Minister for State for Western Economic Diversification Michelle Rempel said. “These facilities provide important community services and support the prosperity of our communities for years to come.” Kuhn said funding
through various programs, such as this, is vital in maintaining the level of services offered at the CDC. “These funds help us to maintain our building and help us to focus our funding on helping local kids and their families,” she said. “Every year we see an increase of children and families using our services, as well, each year we see

New sign honours former gold rush hub At the end of August this year, members of the Friends of Barkerville felt it would be appropriate to erect a new memorial at the site of the oncefamous mining town of Stanley, now a ghost town for several years. A short drive from Stanley signpost on the main QuesnelBarkerville Highway brings the tourist or would-be gold miner along the original road into Stanley to the important and picturesque cemetery. High on a hill above Lightning Creek and before the old townsite is entered, the cemetery guards many of the people important to the history of the whole mining area. The new memorial is an impressive and informative three art panel offering historical data as well as colourful photos of floral, wildlife and itinerant birds taken by members of the F.O.B. all artfully put together by the expertise of Leif and Eva Grandelle Studio of Barkerville and Quesnel. The town was named Stanley to honour Edward Stanley, Secretary of State for early Canadian colonies. – submitted by Jean Speare

Ron Paull adds his name to the ballot
Former councillor Ron Paull wants back in City Hall. Paull’s name will be on the ballot for councillor in November’s elections. “After three years away, I still miss City Hall, he said. Paull served 24 years in management followed by nine years on council. Asked why he is not running for mayor this time, he quipped, “I learned in 2011 that three’s a crowd!” “Quesnel has been good to me and our family for 45 years, and good for my 20 years in the publishing business, so I want to give back,” he said, adding his extensive public service, knowledge of issues and how things work in local government, his business experience and 40 years of local volunteer community service have prepared him well for the challenges and opportunities ahead. This veteran candidate has issues. For the last seven years he and wife Pat Morton have cared for his aging parents, immersed in the day-to-day challenges of elder care in a community stretched to the limit in health care, seniors housing, assisted living, and home, residential and palliative care. “While our family really has little to gripe about, I’m hearing from some that do and we must fix the bridge between the people and the system,” he said. “Every day when I go into the hospital to see my ailing Dad, I see at the door the bronze plaque with the names of the old Hospital Board, and it reminds me we need to fix that bridge.” Paull is also for keeping a lid on spending, while fixing aging infrastructure, mainly roads. “I would channel city funds from some of the “fluff” so our streets can be fixed faster,” he said. “We need less suits and more boots.” The seasoned councillor favours permanent dikes for
low-lying areas of West Quesnel. “Our changing climate threatens more flooding and we must stop building temporary dikes, which cost the same as permanent dikes. Inequities in our municipalregional governance and taxation model should be looked at, as well as air quality (or lack thereof), crime, an alternate truck route, economic development (or lack of thereof), youth issues and the new arena layout.” Paull says Council must be more open and transparent, with less done behind closed doors. He favours live online Council meetings. More timely access to information is needed and he would have the City join other
communities in the BC Open Data Program. “Council needs to get serious about listening to the people and tracking complaints so they are no longer ignored.” Failure to secure federal Multi Centre funding concerns him. “Is there still hope for a modest community theatre?” he asks. A regional master recreation plan and a service review of City spending are on Paull’s list. “Yes, there’s tough work ahead, but I’m up for it and I may even get to again work with the Volunteer Citizens of the Year and Museum Commission,” he said. Paull praises his competitors. “I tip my hat to all candidates, incumbent and new,” he said.

Short-term vs. Long-term Investments: What’s the Difference? At various times, investors may feel frustrated by the performance of their investments. For example, they expect growth, and they don’t get it — or they think the value of their investment won’t fluctuate much, but it does. However, some of this frustration might be alleviated if investors were more familiar with the nature of their investment vehicles. Specifically, it’s important to keep in mind the difference between long-term and short-term investments. What defines long-term and short-term investments? Long-term investments are those vehicles that you intend to hold for more than one year — in fact, you generally intend to hold them for several years. On the other hand, you usually hold short-term investments for one year or less. Ron Paull “Stepping up for council, regional and school boards is a huge commitment
of time, talent, and tension. We should reward it by simply voting.”
You can find several key distinctions between shortterm and long-term vehicles. Here are a few to consider: They carry different expectations When you purchase an investment that you intend to keep for many years, you may be expecting the investment to increase in value so that you can eventually sell it for a profit. In addition, you may be looking for the investment to provide income. When you purchase a short-term vehicle, you are generally not expecting much in the way of a return or an increase in value. Typically, you purchase shortterm investments for the relatively greater degree of principal protection they are designed to provide. They meet different needs at different times of life You will have different investment needs at different times of your life. When you’re young, and just starting out in your career, you may require a mix of long- and short-term investments. You might need the shortterm ones to help pay for a down payment on a home, while the long-term ones could be used to help build resources for your retirement. But later in life, when you’re either closing in on retirement, or you’re already retired, you may have much less need for long-term vehicles, with a corresponding increase in your need for short-term investments. They can satisfy different goals If you purchase investments that you intend to hold for the long term, you probably have a long-term goal in mind — such as building resources to help pay for a comfortable retirement or leaving a legacy. On the other hand, a short-term investment would be more appropriate if you know that you will need a certain amount of money at a certain time — perhaps to purchase a car or to fund a vacation. They carry different risks All investments carry some type of risk. One of the biggest risks associated with long-term investments is volatility, the fluctuations in the financial markets that can cause investments to lose value. On the other hand, short-term investment vehicles may be subject to purchasing power risk — the risk that your investment’s return will not keep up with inflation. As an investor, you’ll probably need a mix of long-term and short-term vehicles. By knowing the differences between these two categories, you should have a good idea of what to expect from your investments — and this knowledge can help you make those choices that are right for you.

he kids are back in school. Getting them there, along with their teachers, wasn’t
easy. But the BC Teachers’ Federation and the government deserve some credit for finally getting down to brass tacks after too many false starts in the past several months. The agreement will not resolve the court cases over the 2002 contract stripping by the BC Liberal government, which was the underlying issue that kept the two sides far apart. That matter will go to the B.C. Court of Appeal next month, after two B.C. Supreme Court judgments that went against the provincial government. Hopefully, that matter will be settled sooner rather than later. But the glacial pace of court proceedings and the likelihood that the Court of Appeal decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, means a final resolution on class size and composition in B.C. schools is likely still years away. From the beginning, this strike was all about the students, and the quality of their education in our public school system, according to both the teachers and government. If that’s truly the case, robbing students of education through strikes and lockouts is something neither the province nor the BCTF should be proud of. In the long term, we need a solution to terminate the seemingly endless labour disputes between the province and the BCTF. Students looking forward to graduating this year, after 12 years in the system, have never known an educational environment free from labour strife. Given how this dispute unfolded, most parents will now look to teachers and the provincial government to live up to prove the integrity of their fight for the quality of their children’s education. – Black Press

The transition from this to that
have had one garage sale in my life. What I discovered from that experience seven years ago is that I really don’t like holding garage sales at all, but I sure like going to them. One of my friends calls them garbage sales. “Why would I want to look at someone else’s crap?” he asked. “I’ve got enough of my own.” I do too. I’m in a perpetual purge situation at home donating things my family doesn’t use anymore to different charities. But there’s something very intriguing about a bunch of items displayed on someone else’s driveway, carport or lawn. Maybe they’ll have something useful or cool that I’ll bring into my home, possibly refurbish and then cherish for years. Or maybe they’ll have nothing that really interests me. I never know until I take a look. This summer I went garage sale-ing twice and came home with some nifty things I didn’t exactly need, but I was glad I found. A rainbow striped ham-

On A Brighter Note mock for $3 was one of my best buys from last weekend’s excursion. Another was a patio set that I purchased from a nice German lady for $20. It was very weathered and in desperate need of some paint and fabric for the cushions, but I imagined how sweet it could look after a makeover. Reusing and repurposing old stuff into something new and useful is often referred to as upcycling – and it can be addictive. Over the years I’ve been a bit of a junkie transforming many home furnishings and I’ve always enjoyed the process. I’ve never taken my hobby to the level some of my friends have though. A couple of them have just submitted fabulous pieces to the “This to That” redesign contest for Habitat for Humanity Kelowna.
“What’s up with this chair?” my 14-year-old son asked me after I’d painted my garage sale find a beautiful eulalie’s sky blue with milk paint and then distressed it with sand paper. “I’m making it look vintage,” I said, applying a second coat of hemp oil to seal my work. “It looks really old, Mom,” he said with a confused look on his face “Like it needs to be painted.” Oh well. As the old saying goes - one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. To cast your vote or bid on your favourite “This to That” entry, please visit: HabitatForHumanityKelowna.ca before October 12, 2014. Along with eight other designers, they explored the large, eclectic ReStore in West Kelowna which is full of donated building supplies, appliances, furniture, and home décor, and picked out items to upcycle into a new creation that the non-profit organization will auction off. Before and after pictures are displayed online, but viewing the submissions in person is much more impressive. It’s inspiring to see the incredibly unique ways a worn out piece of furniture can be transformed. My friend, Barb Newman who’s also my paint dealer, converted an old outdated TV unit into an adorable play kitchen for kids. My other friend, Deb Ward took a dull, rundown dresser and painted a delightful design that I instantly recognized was hers as soon as I saw it. The other re-worked pieces are wonderful as well and they’re a great example of how an old piece can be new again with some imagination and elbow grease. Not everyone will necessarily appreciate the end result though.

That led me to take the social service program at a secondary institution to become a teaching assistant in the public school and help the “slower” students overcome learning difficulties. While doing my practicum in a school, I was appalled at the chaos in the classroom.
While the teacher was busy at the green board explaining a lesson, several students walked about having conversations with other classmates, while others walked over to the window looking at the playground. Juxtapose that to my experience in public school where we didn’t dare chat, never mind

a few years ago and observed the discipline of the children there. The average class size was about 50 students. All of the students were at their desks focused on the teacher. And to have 200 – 300 students in a university auditorium listening to a lecture, there is discipline. If students in a classroom were
studying online with only a monitor walking around, the matter of discipline would not be an issue. You could have many students in a classroom, each student progressing at his or her own speed and then have periodic tests as is done through distance education. Ted Grigoleit Burnaby

Celebrating Orange Shirt day
S
chool Districts #27 and #28, the cities of Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House, the Cariboo Regional District and Wells have proclaimed Sept. 30 as Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a tribute to those who survived Indian Residential Schools and those who did not. Phyllis Webstad’s story of her orange shirt is a symbol of the loss of belonging and belongings faced by generations of residential school children. Saint Joseph’s Mission (Cariboo Residential School) is where generations of Southern Carrier, Chilcotin and Shuswap children attended from ages 5 – 18.
SJM was located a short distance from Williams Lake and operated from 1886 – 1981. This history belongs to all of us. It continues to affect our communities today. he Canadian Cancer Society has partnered up with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) and it is sure to make a bigger impact against cancer. SU2C is a charitable organization that airs an annual live telethon in the United States to raise funds for cancer research “dream teams.” The telethon involves numerous entertainment industry celebrities who rally the public to donate to these dream teams, which are selected by a committee following the

Cancer Clips telethon. This year marks the first time the telethon has aired in Canada. In a recent article on the Canadian Cancer Society’s website, Dr Artem Cherkasov, a researcher who was on a dream team funded
last year, said, “I am not surprised that SU2C wanted to partner with the Canadian Cancer Society since they are the largest national cancer charity in the country with the biggest reach.” A live broadcast aired Friday, Sept. 5 and in case you missed it, you can find the link on the Canadian Cancer Society’s Facebook page. The money raised during the one hour show helps fund cancer research, education and awareness. Ongoing funding for cancer research is crucial to
ensure progress continues against the disease. The research projects happening all across Canada are helping the quality of life for people living with cancer and creating new and innovative ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer. In the 1940s, Canadians diagnosed with cancer had a 25 per cent chance of surviving the disease five years after being diagnosed. Today, the survival rate is over 60 per cent and that is thanks to the research being done. I stand up for those who
have been tough through days of treatment and its effects. For those who have wanted to give up. For those whose only choice is to fight against cancer. I stand up for not only the survivors, but for the warriors, the fighters, the families, the caregivers, the friends. I stand up for those who are no longer with us. I stand up for a world with more survivors; who do you stand up for? Ivana Topic is a volunteer with Canadian Cancer Society, Quesnel branch.

Scouting puts an emphasis on youth leadership I
n my last column, I lamented the disappearance of Scouting in Quesnel, which wasn’t entirely correct. I was sad for the loss of Scouts Canada as an organization with which I was familiar, because that’s the group that I had been involved with as a leader. But in the meantime, another Scouting organization has been formed in Quesnel, and according to its founder, it is thriving. This is the 14th BPSA Dragon Lake Scouting group. Ric Raynor heads the group, is leader of the Explorers and in charge of the traditional scouting movement in all of the Americas, from Canada to Chile. Ric got started as a Cub and Scout in Vancouver during the 60s, camping and enjoying the outdoors, a great opportunity for kids from the city. Skip ahead to 1988 – Ric had moved to Quesnel, and his son
Rick Prosk
why i volunteer was enrolled in Beavers at Dragon Lake. Ric joined him as a leader and followed him through Cubs and Scouts. Running an outdoors-based program, Ric became increasingly frustrated with the bureaucratic structure imposed by Scouts Canada, mentioning the time a commissioner from Prince Rupert decided that kids in Quesnel couldn’t go camping in the winter because it was too cold. Feeling that his Scout group had become a square peg trying to fit into a round hole, Ric made the move to traditional scouting. What’s the difference,
I wondered. In Ric’s view, Scouts Canada has become too urbanized and lost its outdoor focus, where traditional Scouting remains truer to its roots, as established over a hundred years ago by Robert Baden-Powell. “Scouting for Boys” and the original “Wolf Cub Handbook” provide the foundation for the traditional Scouting program, which because of copyright, must rename its groups “Otters, Timberwolves and Explorers” from “Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.” 14th Dragon Lake is a “Scouting” group, not a “Scout” group. What it provides is “fun, something different than what they (kids) would be exposed to in any other way.” An important point: Rather than learning to manage and minimize risk as we once did as a society, we now work to avoid risk at all costs. Scouting is about learning to manage risk, to make
decisions, and to accept responsibility for those decisions. Ric reminded me that B-P called Scouting a “jolly game”, and for him, it’s still that. When I asked why he still does it, long after his own kids have finished the program, Ric talked about the passion that he has for Scouting, and that for anyone who’s been involved for at least 10 years, it becomes part of their lifestyle. When Ric told about his troop’s five-week summer trip to Italy for a weeklong organized camp, then four additional weeks in Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, most of the Scouters he encountered were in their early 20s, having recently finished the Scout program themselves. In Canada, how common is it for recently graduated Scouts (or soccer players) to step back into the organization just to share their love
of Scouting (or soccer) with the kids following in their footsteps. With its emphasis on youth leadership, developed in small patrols, in an outdoor setting, 14th Dragon Lake is a strong and successful program, hampered from further growth by a lack of committed adult volunteers (Sound familiar?). So if my publicity has generated interest for you to enroll your son (or daughter) in Scouting, be prepared to offer your services as a volunteer. The Otter program has a maximum enrollment of 24, and is currently topped out. For more information, call Ric Raynor at 250-747-4334 or check out the website at www.14th.bpsa-bc.org (Great photos from the summer trip posted there). As great as it sounds at 14th Dragon Lake, I can’t help thinking that not every boy is suited to outdoor living. There was once more choice

for boys in Scouting, various groups co-existing around Quesnel, offering similar, but not identical programs through Scouts Canada. Now those are gone, and with them, the choices for boys are gone. Luckily for girls, they still have a choice: traditional co-ed Scouting or Guiding as offered by the Girl Guides of Canada. Kathy Breadner has long been the face of Guiding in Quesnel. She first got involved as a Guide in Vancouver, going through the program to become a leader at 18 years old. Total number of years involved in Guiding: 54 and counting – long enough to warrant a life membership, along with Madeline Peterson. Having moved to Quesnel, and with a young family, Kathy’s first involvement was as a music advisor in 1979. She has been involved in local Guiding ever since. Girl Guides have a lot in common with Scouts. See PAGE A12

from A11 Founded by the same man, with the help first of his sister, then later, his wife, the strength of the Guiding program remains the same now as it was a hundred years ago – a focus on providing service to others, and as Kathy put it, “basic learning of a variety of skills.” Kathy compared this to the skills required to learn dance, piano or soccer, which develop proficiency in very specific areas, whereas with Guiding, some girls may never have stayed away from home, some have never slept in a tent, some have never cooked and those with experience are given the opportunity to share their knowledge and lead others. In this way, Guides are challenged to prove themselves in new situations. Girls who commit to the program have the
chance to travel, as my daughter did, and as Kathy has done, having met the Queen and Lady BadenPowell and learned to sing in different languages. When asked what’s kept her involved all this time, Kathy spoke with the same passion as Ric Raynor did. Over the past year, she had the chance to work with her daughter Erin, and together they led the Guide group that included her granddaughter. And while she’s no longer able to travel to the big camps, she still enjoys her time with the girls. Guides is an all-female organization, the largest in the world. It enrolls girls from the age of five, and as Kathy Breadner is proving, they can stay for a lifetime. The challenges for the organization, at least at the local level, relate to not
having enough leaders, not having enough kids, kids living at two homes, parents on shift work unable to provide transportation, kids having too many commitments and not enough time. Is it worth the effort to get your daughter involved? In the words of someone who should know: “You’ll learn skills that will last your whole life.” I assume
that applies to the adults as well as the kids. To enroll, visit www.girlguides. ca. Parents unable to commit to a leadership position are welcome to put their names forward to help out as needed on an occasional basis. Kathy’s phone number is 250-2495934. NEW SPECIALIST IN QUESNEL GETS SUPPORT FOR EAR, NOSE AND THROAT PROCEDURES A surgeon in Quesnel has made it possible for residents to undergo ENT (Ear Nose Throat) procedures without leaving the comfort of their community. Dr. Lalenthra Naidoo, an ENT surgeon who was trained in South Africa, arrived in Quesnel in May. Since opening her practice, she identified an upgrade in equipment that would be necessary to conduct surgical procedures. Recently, a generous donation of $5,000 from Spectra Energy facilitated through Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation went towards equipment supporting Laryngotomy (throat) and Myringotomy (ear) procedures. For a city that went years without an ENT specialist, the arrival of Naidoo and the equipment is a welcome change. “My patients are very grateful to have ENT services once again since the passing of Dr. Duffy about eight
years ago,” Naidoo said. “This period without ENT support in the area has meant that Quesnel residents had to go to Prince George, Kamloops or Vancouver for their appointments, necessitating taking time off work and losing out on pay for travel expenses.” “With medical practices changing on an almost daily basis, equipment and technology also needs to be upgraded to ensure that patients get the best possible care. The gap in ENT services in Quesnel for the past few years means that equipment has not been upgraded. Equipment in this highly specialized field is critical to provide continued surgical management of various ENT conditions. Private funding and donations are vital to restock our operating room.” Dr. Naidoo hopes to be able to perform sinus surgery in the upcoming years as well and routinely refers patients to other major centers until equipment is available at G.R. Baker Memorial. Major donations
are needed, with sinus surgery equipment in excess of $80,000. She remains hopeful that this will someday take place. “We are so pleased to see this come together for Dr. Naidoo and the Community of Quesnel,” commented Judy Neiser, CEO for Spirit of the North. “We work closely with Spectra Energy and their desire to improve healthcare in many of the communities in the region. This truly is a great example of our valued donors helping to bring the best possible care closer to home in the North.” Dr. Naidoo showed her appreciation for Spectra Energy, one of North America’s leading pipeline and midstream companies. She said that the company’s support allows G.R. Baker Memorial to perform basic surgery in the “voice box” area. “Thank you Spectra Energy for considering and giving
back to the community of Quesnel! Your generosity is helping patients in this community and the surrounding areas obtain access to the vital health care services they require. Thank you for your ongoing support! A very big Thank You to Spirit of the North too,” she said. “Without your efforts in fundraising, heath care services would be at a loss!” G.R. Baker Memorial and the community appreciate the support that enables them to upgrade existing equipment and purchase new equipment. Dr. Naidoo gives credit to the private donors who play a major role in continued advancement in healthcare. Rotary’s Rotaract looking to Quesnel young adults Open house set for Oct. 1 to introduce possibilities through new club ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter
Rotaract committee chair and Quesnel Rotary Club member Tim Cawdell opened his eyes to an aspect of the service club he’d never considered before after spending a weekend at the Rotary District Conference in Squamish with three very highly motivated young people. “Spending time with these young adults opened my eyes to the fact they are our future,” he said. “I want to be part of encouraging their drive and energy through a Rotaract Club in Quesnel.” Rotaract is a part of the Rotary family and focuses on young men and women between the ages of 18 – 30. It is designed to develop young adults as leaders in their communities and workplaces. Clubs around the world also take part in international service projects, in a global
effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world. The name Rotaract stands for Rotary in Action. Harjinder Jassal is no stranger to Rotary. While in high school she was an enthusiastic member of the Interact Club which is an organization for youth between the ages of 12 – 18. As one of the three young adults who attended the Rotary District Conference with Cawdell, Harjinder also learned a great deal. “That conference helped me realize we can do anything if we just try,” she said. Coming back to Quesnel, Harjinder is now a busy college student but is determined to help establish a Rotaract Club in Quesnel. “I grew as a person through the Interact club and it taught me leadership, public speaking and a sincere desire to

Experienced Rotarians will also be on hand to help welcome young people to the possibilities of Rotary. “We’re looking to find people who would like to devote a small portion of their leisure time for a great reward and personal satisfaction,” Cawdell said. he time is now. According to one North Cariboo resident everyone has a role to play in taking care of Mother Earth and she’s gone as far as publishing a book providing more than 365 ways each and everyone can do their part. Kimberly Ann Price offers suggestions from make your own earth and life safe cleaning products using pure essential oils in the first of the book to number 483 where she says build relationships and trust with your neighbours. For Price this all began when her two sons were young in the 1990s. She saw her responsibility to sustaining life on earth well beyond her own mortality, a legacy for her children and children’s children. “I started writing down ideas about what I could do,” she said. “Then I started a plastics recycling business and as I was making my own cleaners, I started selling those as well.” Price continued to keep her journal of sustainable ideas until the list topped off at close to 500. And she practiced every one, more or less. She is adamant this also requires a positive attitude – there
isn’t a don’t in her book anywhere. Price also admonishes people to be kind to themselves, if you fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up, try to get back to sustainable practices, one step at a time. “Do the best you can, there’s no judgement or blame, what you don’t do, maybe I do, what I don’t do, maybe you do,” she said. “Hopefully we all do lots together because we’re in this together, we have to be.” She admits sometimes she falls off her Green Wagon as she likes to call her mission but digs deep and climbs back on. Survival instinct needs to kick in just like in times of natural disasters, Price says. “We do whatever we need to do to help sustain life on earth, we need to think this way everyday,” she added. During a recent trip to Vancouver, Price was honoured to meet one of her environmental heroes, David Suzuki at his foundation office. It was a momentous occasion for this author to hand over her newly printed book to such a star. During the course of her time spent at the foundation office, Price was later invited to become a Queen of

sale of her book to the Suzuki Foundation. In 2008, Price made the decision to move from the Lower Mainland to acreage west of Quesnel and has never been happier, living a much more green existence with her family and her animals. It was after this she dug out her notes from one of the many as yet unpacked boxes and began seriously
considering publishing a book. She sees communing with animals, nature, friends and family as part of her vision for a sustainable planet and encourages others to do the same, which was her motivation for formally offering her dream to the world. She said this movement begins with a positive attitude, a deep love for yourself and a sincerely desire to become aware and always be open to learning something new every day. “Remember, the bottom line is we can’t just expect groups like GreenPeace, Suzuki Foundation or Sierra Club can do it all, they need everyone to climb on the green wagon.” Her book has 490 itemized suggestions and many are personal growth ideas, enough for at least one a day. She says her favourite is number 42 “care.” Price said when she gets an uneasy feeling and begins to worry about what can one person do, she becomes stronger in her determination to share her book. “This is the time to have fun with following ideas in my book, spend time with positive people who care about the environment. Join an environmental group if
you like, read, learn and share your thoughts and actions with your family and friends, co-workers and with anyone who will listen. Create your own list of to dos or continue adding to the one you already have. Role model and feel good about yourself and what you do for the environment.” Price is launching her book, 365+, Ways we Can Help Sustain Life on Earth, at Green Tree Health and Wellness, Oct. 2, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. (in Prince George at Books and Company, Oct. 11, 1 – 3 p.m.) and invites the public to drop by, meet the author and pick up a signed copy. To contact Price email forlife4all@ gmail.com or check out her website for life4all environmental products and services. Basically Price advocates for people to live local – shop at local businesses, buy from local farmers, access the local community for as much as possible. “If you want to see change in whatever area of your life, speak up, voice your opinion, talk to people,” she said. “Advocate for all life, for Mother Earth.” Price is working on a second book which will be a companion to the first with more ideas and practical suggestions.

Have a story?
Women’s Fall Challenge – the magic of the day
I
t will be a cool autumn morning with rich autumn colours and fresh autumn air. An arch, a few tents and other man-made necessities will rise in the mist, disturbing the serenity of the loons, but only just a little. The world about is still quiet and magical. That magic weaves its threads into every walker, every runner, every volunteer and every step taken. Steam from the coffees will mingle with the mist and the warmth of the cups will comfort chilled fingers. A tinge of nervous energy is shared by those who prepare, have we remembered everything? Mental checklists, trips to the loo and mountains of good things piled mean that all is ready. The first participants will drift in for 7:30 a.m. to pick up a registration package or perhaps they just have a strong need to be early. Others will join the flow a little later, walking down from parked cars that are now half a kilometre away. More nervous energy joins the mix, questions are answered, late registrations are finalized and sneakers are adjusted. By 8 a.m. the area is buzzing and the birds are well aware
that they will have to share the tendrils of mist. A ‘v’ of geese flies overhead, noticing little people skittering about. All feel safe. All are a bit nervous, not because of the competition so much but because of the coming together of young and mature, new and experienced, competitive and modest. This morning, hundreds become part of a collective that will share amazing positive energy. Bev’s first time was a few years back. She had walked the river trail infrequently but had aching feet every time. It wasn’t until a friend helped her get good shoes and then start walking a little bit further each time out. They eventually could do both trails in one go. When Bev realized that success, she was finally ready to take on the Fall Challenge. But her shyness still drove her nerves; was she able, was she ready, could she not be embarrassed? With her friend’s support, she tackled the 5km walk her first year and crossed the finish line with a resounding sense of success. The following few years, she chose to walk 10km. And now, into her seventh year, she walks/runs the course with a smile that
beams to space. Sam’s first time was at the age of seven. She joined her mom and her big sister that year to walk the 5km. Sam bubbled with excitement, wearing pink tights and a fuzzy blue hoody. She stretched and bounced and was like a hummingbird ready to fly. She remembers her mom putting a calming hand on her shoulder and assuring her that the start would be soon and reminding her to walk the whole way. Sam thought that would be tough because she had so much energy. But she did it. Being part of such a large crowd didn’t scare Sam; she found it interesting to listen to all the chatter. They walked and talked and laughed and sang their way through the course. But that was the only time Sam walked. At eight, nine and 10, she ran the 5km. She couldn’t take part every year but in her teens she ran the 10km. Now, in her early 20’s, Sam is ready to take on the half marathon. The pink tights have long been too small but she said every year, she found something pink to wear. One year it was bunny ears. I wonder what it will be this year. Marg had never heard of the event.
She’s lived in Quesnel for most of her life but somehow, she had never known that hundreds become Ladies of the Lake to walk in support of good health, of good friendship and good effort to fund the mammography unit at the hospital. How could she not have known? She’s not sure but this year, she saw an entry form at the library. Marg is a book lady. She can read for hours, happily. But knowing that she had to become more active, she put down the books and picked up a brochure. What clinched her decision was that she recognized one of her friends on the cover of the brochure. When she asked, this friend said she never thought Marg would want to walk. But brewing inside Marg was the need to change her life. Reading was good but she could walk and listen to books on CD. Yes. She could do both. She walked the trail most days in August and submitted her form in time to get the early rate and a t-shirt. Her favourite colour is purple. She walked the trail most of September and has worked her way through a few stories. Come Oct. 5, she will
be accompanying that friend for her first Fall Challenge at the age of 54. For every reason to walk or run there is magic. The magic of friendship as clusters of ladies gather and reminisce. There is the magic of a first time taking on a challenge beyond the norm or of the nth time of putting spirit into the blend. There is the magic of completion, accomplishment and success. There is even magic in the sore muscles and bones that shout, “We will remind you of that job well done for the next few days.” We are so fortunate. This event, allencompassing of walk, run, or wheel, of short or long distances, brings ladies from all over the province to share in the fun. Please add your energy to the mix. We welcome all and will do our best to make your morning a delight. Great job, Quesnel. Call the Arts and Recreation Centre for signup details. – submitted by Liz-Anne Eyford

Join the Breastfeeding Challenge
Mothers and babies invited to participate Quesnel is celebrating the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge for the 13th year in a row. They join sites around the world passionate about promoting breastfeeding as the best practice for new mothers and their babies. Again this year, mothers (fathers are welcome as well) are asked to drop by the Child Development Centre, Oct. 4, in the old Rigsby Lee building around 10:30 a.m. in preparation for their babies latching on at exactly 11 a.m. Last year, 10 babies were latched on at 11 a.m. Refreshments are served and members of the nursing and child development community will also be in attendance. Every year, on the first Saturday of Oct. at 11 a.m., mothers and children at sites across Canada, the United States and other countries around the world compete to set the record for the most children breastfeeding at one time. The winners of the competition will be the site with the most children breastfeeding at one site, the country with the most children breastfeeding at registered sites and in North America, the region (province, territory or state) with the most children participating as a percentage of the birth rate. To level the playing field between large and small, each site will be entered into one of four groups determined by birth rate. Why this challenge? Breastfeeding has many welldocumented benefits including better health for both mothers and babies. According to UNICEF, of the 136.7 million babies born worldwide, only 32.6 per cent of them breastfeed exclusively in the first six months. The recommendation is for exclusive breastfeeding for
the first six months and continued breastfeeding for two years and beyond together with adequate, appropriate and indigenous complimentary feeding starting from the age of six months. Many women fail to meet their own breastfeeding goals and wean their children prematurely, well before meeting recommended guidelines. Two of the biggest hurdles for mothers continue to be lack of support and marginalization by the community. In North America this lack of support is demonstrated as many women find breastfeeding in public a major barrier. The Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge began in 2001 in British Columbia Canada
with 856 children at 26 sites. By 2013, there were 4,560 children in 10 countries and we hope for even greater support this year. This event takes place as part of the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week in Canada. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) theme for World Breastfeeding
Week this year is Breastfeeding: a winning goal for life. The theme asserts the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding and adequate complementary feeding (at about six months) are key interventions for improving child survival worldwide. The Quintessence Foundation, a non-profit group providing education to parents and professionals about breastfeeding and human milk banking, sponsors the Breastfeeding Challenge. All West Crane had the job of transporting an acid storage tank, 15ft in diameter from where it was fabricated at Babcon Industries on Campbell Crescent to its new home at Cariboo Pulp and Paper Monday night. The convoy couldn’t head out on the roads until 12:01 a.m. and regardless of the obstacles or setbacks, had to be at its destination before 6 a.m. Three pilot cars and a TELUS escort vehicle accompanied the eight-axle low bed truck configuration. According the All West Crane, the tank barely fit under the bridge over Quesnel River. B.C. Hydro crews were out during the day lifting wires in anticipation of the event. The massive move was successful.

Boyhood plays Oct. 2 at the Carib Theatre.

Ground-breaking film chronicles life in real time Quesnel Film Club’s second film in its fall lineup is Boyhood, to play at the Carib Theatre Oct. 2, 6:30 p.m. This coming-of-age epic of unparalleled depth and scope was shot chronologically, at regular intervals over a 12-year period. As the story progresses, the actors age and mature along with their characters. The young protagonist, Mason grows up before the audience’s eyes from the age of five to 18 and along with him the audience experiences the formative moments of his life as well as the seemingly inconsequential ones. The end result is a moving series of vignettes that add up to a lifetime – or at least the beginnings of one. Accompanying Mason on his journey are his sister Samantha and his divorced parents. Boyhood is an extraordinary, touching and sincere movie. No one has ever seen a film like it – except, perhaps, in our own home movies. Tickets for Boyhood are $9 (regular) and $7 (seniors) with film club memberships included in admission. How to ensure top bus safety standards
M
any students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary schoolchildren ride school buses daily in the United States and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year. The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national schoolbus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles. Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses, may find the bus fun and unique and not pay attention to simple safetyrules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines. •Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives. •Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus

Home game rush Quesnel Minor Football faced off against visiting teams from Prince George and Vanderhoof on the weekend with back-to-back games, Sept. 20 at the Cariboo Field. It was a fight to the end line for this junior bantam player, fending off a tackle from the opposing team as he holds the football tight. Whitney Griffiths photo

erenity jumps out to a solid start in their dominating 5-1 win over a red laced Fraser River team as Bear bends but doesn’t break in a 4-3 thriller over Blue Collar. With a squad with several characters from a 1990’s Bouchie Lake house party, it didn’t take long for the Builder brothers from different mothers to cash in with a 5-1 victory over Fraser River. Getting the party started was Chris “Who’s your Daddy” Royle who converted a goal mouth pass with the precision of a surgeon. Tallying close behind was George “13 years and counting” Paul who also drew an assist on Todd “The Body” Gryschuks first of the year. Rounding out the scoring

PAPERBACK WRITER were Wade “The Blade” Fenton and Chad “The Comet” Swanson who also picked up well earned assists. It came as no surprise that Fraser River wanted to play a Mulligan as they were dressed more like a back lot used car salesman than the Powder Blue Chevy Crew that we have come to love. Despite the ragtag look, Kris “Haymitch” Hayman managed to dominate his squad’s side of the score sheet with a jaw dropping goal and a penalty for a jaw jarring hit. The other contest
was one for the record books as a waiver wire veteran stole the show to lead Bear to a 4-3 win over Blue Collar in a rematch and reversal of last year’s Lumber Cup finale. After a disastrous 2013-14 season where he only scored once (24th game of the season) it was no wonder that Randy “Killer” Crofts was brandishing a new stick this year. In his second shift of the game “Killer” was rewarded with a lucky bounce on a bad angle shot which was quickly followed by a near end to end rush where he made more moves than “Jagr” for his second of the period. “Killer” never ventures past his own blueline, so an “end to end” rush for him is a little shorter than most. Taking spots six to 11, scoring one goal already this season are Blue Collar players Mucheal Dodge and Glen Goymer, Fraser GM’s Kris Hayman, Todd Gryschuk and Chris Royle of Serenity Builders and Doug Mack from Bear Communications. Only time will tell which players will continue to climb the ranks.
As the season starts, Bear Communications’ Randy Croft takes a strong lead, claiming the number one spot with three goals. This will be the first time in over 10years that Crofts has taken the lead. Blue Collar’s Justin Rasmussen and Serenity Builder’s Chad Swanson, Wade Fenton and

God’s still shining on him, “Killer” completed the hat trick soon after as he banged in a rebound. Previously known as a gifted goal scorer, the hat trick was “Killer’s” first since Oct. 28, 2009. Also scoring for Bear was another ageless wonder, Doug “Big” Mack who continued his sizzling end to last year’s Cinderella playoffs. Replying for BCS was Michael
“Finch” Dodge who scored on the first shot of the game on a post in rocket from the point as Justin “Time” Rasmussen scored once and assisted on Glenn “Double G” Goymers net crashing marker which completed the scoring. – Steve Dodge is a defensive winger with Bear Communications and an Observer contributor.

September 28 - October 4, 2014 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, though you are usually up for a conversation with someone you don’t know, this week you could be in a more conservative mood. You’ll have future chances to chat. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 You have been on a shopping binge of late, Taurus. If you have unlimited funds, this would not be so problematic. But finances are tight, and you should be more cautious. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you are often an entertaining and fun person to have around. This is probably why you get so many invitations to parties and other social occasions. Enjoy your fanfare. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Surround yourself with children this week, Cancer. They’ll provide the unedited, honest information you desire right now. It can certainly be eyeopening. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Spend some quality time with a romantic partner this week, Leo. He or she can provide more of what you need, such as true affection and companionship, than what’s offered by friends. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you deserve credit at the office. If you’re patient, some measure of recognition will come your way this week. It’s a start to getting what you need. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Few people will accuse you of being uncommunicative, Libra. In fact, you’re usually downright chatty. It’s one of the traits people will admire most in you this week. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, a new person comes into your life and your attraction to this person catches you off guard. It’s okay to flirt, but if you’re already attached to someone, leave it at that. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you’re often the one to take the lead in conversations in your group of friends, but this week someone else takes the lead. You’re content to sit back and simply listen. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, once you have gained enough confidence in a special interest, you may be able to turn it into a career instead of just a hobby. Keep working toward that goal. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 It’s time to tie up some loose ends, Aquarius. Rustle up some energy to take care of all those little things that need to be wrapped up. You’ll feel a weight lift afterward. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, increase your level of activity this week. Exercise can do you a world of good, especially if you’ve felt sluggish of late. This is a really great league, senior AA is probably the toughest hockey out there,” Winofsky said. “You really have to love hockey to play because there is no money involved, they come and pour their guts out and they don’t get paid. This is a 100 per cent dedication game. I really respect that of the guys.” Every Tuesday and Thursday the team gears up, filling the arena with the sound of their hockey stick smashing against the puck as the Roos skate across the rink running exhausting drills in preparation for the start of what promises to be another entertaining season for Roo fans all across the central interior. The Roos are placing a lot of incredible talent on the ice this year. With a strong line up of players coach Win Winofsky is happily optimistic about the roos chance at the play-offs this season. Winofsky served as coach for the Roos three years ago and was excited to step up to the plate again with the hopes of coaching the team through another fantastic season. “I know probably 80 per cent of the guys from my last year coaching,” Winofsky said. “My thought of the season is a lot of the core group of players have three years under their belt and I think that skill building and experience will help us.” The Roos welcomed a few fresh faces to the roster this year including Dan Kirkham, Kyle Schisler and Darryl Gagnon. The team will also be bringing a bit of outside help as well, adding three out-oftown players to Quesnel’s line-up. Kamloops locals Colten DeFrais and Ryan Hanes will add their skill to the Roos

Not too late to realize that convertible dream Buy now and park it until next spring! With cooler weather ahead, fall can be an opportune time to snag a great deal on that dream-ride convertible you’ve always wanted to own, like the soft-top edition of Chevrolet Camaro. Chevrolet introduced an all-new Camaro Coupe for the 2010 model year and the Camaro Convertible followed a year later. While it shares many similar styling details, this modern day rebirth of Camaro is longer and wider than the celebrated original ‘67, of the “muscle car” era. Big wheels (18-inch to massive 21-inch rim sizes) are an important design feature of new Camaro and it’s a little taller. The 2011 Camaro Convertible was offered in just LT and SS trim levels. The LT comes with a lightweight and powerful “LFX” 3.6-litre V6 engine. It can generate 323 horsepower and is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Revised and more realistic new fuel economy (auto) ratings are 12.9 Bob McHugh L/100km in city and 8.1 L/100km on highway. A potent 6.2-litre V8 engine (from the Corvette) lies under the hood of Camaro SS. When paired with a six-speed manual it’s tuned to pump out 425 horsepower. A 400 horsepower edition of this same engine (with more low-speed torque and a fuel saving cylinder deactivation system) is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The revised fuel rating for Camaro SS (auto) is 14.9 L/100km in
‘‘
city and 9.5 L/100km on highway. There is a key engineering difference between Chevrolet’s Camaro and, its nemesis, the Ford Mustang. While both vehicles send gobs of engine power to the rear wheels, Mustang has a rigid rear axle and Camaro has a more sophisticated independent link system with half-shafts and coil springs attached to an isolated subframe. In theory, Camaro should be a better riding and handling sports car but that debate rolls on. A limited edition high-performance Camaro ZL1 arrived in 2012. It came with a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that can produce an outrageous 580 horsepower … and it has obvious collector car potential. A special 45th Anniversary Package was also offered that year. Other than some packing revisions and new colour choices, there were no significant changes to the 2013 or the 2014 model year editions of Camaro. While it may be hard to find practical reasons to buy a sports car like Camaro, it did make it on the Consumer Reports list of “recommended” good, reliable cars to buy. Camaro Convertible is also even less practical and more expensive than the Coupe. Then again, it’s a hoot to drive, especially with the top down! Price Check: 2011 – 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible (September 2014) Year Edition Expect to Pay Today
Fall can be an opportune time to snag a great deal on that dream-ride convertible you’ve always wanted.
’’
2011 LT $22,000 to $26,000 2012 LT $25,000 to $29,000 2013 LT $28,000 to $33,000 2014 LT $33,000 to $38,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2011 to 2014 Chevrolet Camaro: 2010 to 2014: There is a risk that some drivers may bump the ignition key with their knee and unintentionally move the key from out of the “run” position. Engine power, power braking and power steering would be affected, if this were to occur. Dealers will remove the key blade from the original flip key/transmitter assemblies and provide two new keys and key rings for every original key. 2011/2012: In vehicles equipped with power height adjustable front seats, a bolt securing the adjuster mechanism may loosen and could fall out, causing the seat to suddenly drop. Dealers will replace the bolt. 2012: The primary or secondary stage of the driver’s airbag may not deploy during a crash. Dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil (This is a condensed series of recalls). 2013: The airbag warning labels may not be permanently affixed to sun visors. Owners sent instructions on how to inspect labels, or may have the inspection performed at a dealer. Where labels are found to be defective, the sun visors will be replaced. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
