Former MLA wants back into politics Ida Chong to run for Victoria mayor after short political hiatus Kevin Laird News staff
Ida Chong is betting she can revive a political career that looked bleak after she lost her Oak Bay-Gordon Head seat after 17 years in last year’s provincial election. A year ago, it seemed improbable she would be seeking to unseat incumbent Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin, but Chong said she didn’t look at her defeat last fall as bitter sweet. “I take on every election as challenge,” she said. “You work very hard and you do your best … that’s all you can ask.” A Saanich resident, Chong handled 10 different ministerial portfolios and chaired various committees during her time in office. She also sat as a one-term Saanich councillor. Chong said she’s running for mayor in Victoria because she believes the capital city needs “strong, proven, experience leadership.” “I’ve represented this region for the past 20 years and I say I care passionately about Victoria and its future,” she said. University of Victoria political scientist Warren Magnusson said Chong’s entry shook up the race that appeared to be a two-person battle. PLEASE SEE: Chong faces hurdles, Page A4

Teen pianist heads to provincials Glenlyon Norfolk student wins Island young artist competition to reach provincial event Travis Paterson News staff
For the first round of the Provincial Piano Competition on Saturday, Saanich’s Keaton Ollech will start with Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in D major, Op. 10, No. 3. Once he’s broken the ice, the 15-year-old Saanich phenom will then progress to a Chopin scherzo in B-flat minor as he competes in the B.C. Piano Competition against seven others this weekend in North Vancouver. “I enjoy competition performance, it helps you practice, and helps you reach breakthroughs,” says Ollech, a Grade 11 student at Glenlyon Norfolk School. He enjoys judged performances as they help motivate his rehearsals, he says. In layman’s terms, the kid can play anything, but he’s always reaching for the next level. Earlier this year, Ollech qualified for the provincial competition when he won the regional Mary Adamson Young Artist Competition in Victoria. If he wins the provincial award, organized by the B.C. Registered Music Teacher’s Association, Ollech will move on to compete with exclusive company for a national prize. “The second round, I’ll play the scherzo again, Sonatine by Maurice Ravel, and In Memorium to the Victims of Chernobyl by Canadian Larysa Kuzmenko. I’m indebted to the BCRMTA for the chance to play at this level,” he says. There’s no hesitation when instructor May Ling Kwok confirms that Ollech, her youngest student, is among the strongest piano players in Victoria. “He is an exceptional boy and student, a pleasure to work with,” said Kwok, who’s been at the Victoria Conservatory of Music for 30 years. “It’s a lot of commitment, hard work and dedication to do what he’s done.” Ollech showed an early interest in the piano and accomplished the Grade 4 level

Fifteen-year-old Saanich resident Keaton Ollech sits at a grand piano in the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where he’s been training since he was eight years old. Ollech will perform in the Provincial Piano Competition this weekend in North Vancouver with seven other pianists. as an eight year old. That’s when his tutorship with Kwok began at the Conservatory. With Kwok’s seasoned coaching, Ollech excelled. Last year, he finished the 10th and final grade of the Association of Royal Conservatory of Toronto piano performance, practical and theory curriculum, which is Canada’s standard. He hit a couple of gold and silver medals along the way, including a 100 per cent mark in the history component of the curriculum, top amongst B.C. students. He can sightread the richest musical scores. For Ollech, it’s a matter of working
with Kwok to understand the feel of the movements. “There’s always room to grow and I’m always working to discover the music,” he says. Ollech has already narrowed his post secondary focus to music. The Glenn Gould School at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, Juilliard School (New York), Peabody Institute (Baltimore) and the University of Toronto are his leading choices, and it seems he’s well on his way to achieving his dream. reporter@saanichnews.com

Piano Competition are Wesley Hawkins (Chilliwack), Catherine Xu (Coquitlam/ Maple Ridge), Melissa Tao (Kelowna), Matthew Krell (North Island), Linda Ruan (Richmond), Jaeden Izik Dzurko (Shuswap) and Michelle Lin (Vancouver). n Visit bcrmta.bc.ca/bc-pianocompetition for more information.

Chong faces hurdles in mayoral campaign Continued from Page A1
Fortin and Coun. Lisa Helps are also vying for the top job in Victoria. “One of the challenges Ida faces is how does she reach out to the voters in a city that in the last provincial election voted NDP.” Magnusson said Chong isn’t the first politician to go from provincial or federal politics back to municipal politics. Former MP Olivia Chow is currently battling to become the mayor of Toronto, and former premier Bill Vander Zalm attempted to become mayor of Vancouver while he was still the mayor of Surrey. “The hurdles for someone coming back from provincial or federal politics is the perception of partisanship. At the municipal level, voters tend to want their Ida Chong. politicians to be non-partisan,” Magnusson said. Fortin and Helps said they welcome Chong into

the race because now city voters will have a clear choice. “We’re proud to put forward our record to the people – a record of building a progressive city, a record of building a livable city, a record of building a prosperous city. We look forward to the upcoming two months for the opportunity to put forward both our record and vision for Victoria.,” Fortin said. Chong has her vision for the city, too, but admits she is no shoo-in for the capital city post. She said she has support from the business community, trade unions and “just every day Victoria residents.” Fortin and Helps claim the same level of support. “My approach is to listen before I act, to make decisions after I have received all the research and evidence I need,” Chong said. In the 2011 provincial election, Fortin took a comfortable number of votes from his closest competitior. This time, he said, the race is against himself and Chong. Chong puts her odds at winning at about 50 per cent. Magnusson said idealogical differences will always play a part, but no matter if a politician is running federally, provincially or municipally it always comes down to getting out the vote. “I think voters do deserve a choice,” Chong said. “I believe I still I have something to give to public life. I’ll run hard and take nothing for granted. I’ll learn as I move forward and bring everything I’ve got.” klaird@blackpress.ca

Local author and historian Valerie Green likes to create a cohesive theme each time she hosts the annual Saanich Heritage Bus Tour and Tea. This year, as the near sold-out bus is readied for another jaunt around Saanich, Green is proving she’s put together another appealing package for new and returning heritage buffs. “I thought about how many authors in the past and present have lived in Saanich, so we created a literary theme and we’re going to include the homes of people like Bruce Hutchison, Nellie McClung and children’s author and illustrator Helen Stewart,” Green said. Green couldn’t explain why Saanich continues to be a magnet for literary professionals, but the legacy left by the likes of McClung and others in their retirement years leaves plenty of inspiration for aspiring writers. McClung’s most famous work is a 1936 collection of short stories, Leaves from Lantern Lane, based on her own home on Ferndale Road in Gordon Head, Green said. “Nellie had a long lane leading to her house, which we will be walking down towards the house on our tour,” she said. “Nellie always used to hang a lantern at the end of that lane.” Stewart’s 1912 home at Ten Mile Point includes a visit to her in-house printing press, which occupies an old ballroom built originally for the original occupant’s daughter to entertaining her guests. “It’s just an enormous ballroom,” Green said. “The house has a fascinating history, but I don’t want to give away too much.” Saanich archivist Caroline Duncan said the tour has remained popular since its inception 27 years ago. The afternoon tea also facilities a memorable social event, particularly for seniors. “We do tend to get older adults but everybody is welcome,” Duncan said. “The tour is really great for people who no longer drive. We’re seeing Saanich neighbourhoods and heritage houses that people might not be able to get out and see on their own anymore, and it’s a very sociable event.” Tickets to the event are $30. Bus tour participants will be picked up at Saanich Commonwealth

Police seek bank robbery suspect Saanich police are investigating two brazen bank heists in Saanich on Monday afternoon.
The first robbery occurred just before 3 p.m. at a CIBC branch in the 2900-block of Tillicum Rd. A man walked in and demanded cash before fleeing on foot. Police found a detonated dye pack, cash
and other evidence a short distance away. The second robbery took place around 3:45 p.m. at a TD Canada Trust branch in the 3600-block of Shelbourne St.

Free dental care fills ‘great need’ Daniel Palmer News staff
Dr. Ross Crapo is accustomed to dealing with people in physical pain. But as he prepares for an annual free day of dentistry at his practice, Crapo is reminded of the emotional scarring he often discovers at his operating chair. “We see situations where folks have got more life than they have money left,” said Crapo, who along with Dr. Win Nyugen, Dr. Peter Liem and Dr. Michael Bennett will donate their time to Dentistry From the Heart at Crapo’s office tomorrow. The philanthropic program began 13 years ago in Florida and has since grown to include more than 200 dental practices across North America. Some staff donate their time, while other expenses like sterilization and the cost of fillings and X-rays are incurred by the practice. “Most of the time, we’re helping people in pain, who have been living with this pain for a long time,” Crapo said. “And it’s something that’s become emotional for them as well.” Last year, Crapo and his team treated about 80 patients, and they hope to increase that number on Saturday. The program provides reprieve for people who otherwise can’t afford out-of-pocket medical expenses, which recent StatsCan numbers show is a growing demographic across the country.

Saanich dentist Dr. Ross Crapo is participating in Dentistry from the Heart once again this year.
Medical expenses like prescription drugs, insurance premiums and dental care have increased significantly in Canada between 1997 and 2009, asccording to StatsCan. Out-of-pocket health-care expenses for low-income Canadians rose by 63 per cent during that period after being adjusted for inflation. An average low-income resident now doles out $380 per person

Classroom solutions far from reality One of the most contentious issues in the recently ended B.C. teachers’ strike was the decreased availability of education assistants and professional learning specialists in schools. The government has said it will fund more specialists and classroom assistants, but how that will be divided up is anyone’s guess. The movement to place more students with severe behavioural challenges or other special needs into regular classrooms, to integrate them with the rest of the student population, is a noble idea and one that makes sense from a purely moral and ethical point of view. From a practical standpoint, some of these students remain unable to handle the stresses of everyday class life and require almost constant attention and supervision from classroom assistants. But those same assistants and specialists are often tasked with helping struggling students in multiple classes get through challenging learning situations. While B.C.’s education budget has gradually increased since being slashed shortly after the Liberals came to power, the allotment of funding for special needs education has not kept pace with demand. The result is classrooms where students who are having a tough time in mandatory subjects like math or science are not able to get the individual attention they need. Classroom size is an issue that will likely go on long after the current contract expires. Everyone knows teachers are maxed out trying to help two dozen or more kids succeed in their courses, an especially tough situation for those educators with special needs students in their classrooms who require more individual help than those without such designations. Taking special needs students out of classrooms would be a step backwards, from both a diversity and a humanitarian standpoint. So, it’s critical that the province fund an educational scenario that meets the needs of all students. A pending B.C. court of appeal ruling should finally put an end to the mess next year, but what that looks like is anyone’s guess.

Cow farm fix should be simple Re: Gordon Head cattle farm fight stuck in the mud (News, Sept. 24) Mayor Frank Leonard is unwilling to help our neighbourhood be rid of the cattle feedlot in our residential area. He will not meet with neighbourhood representatives and he is not currently responding to us by phone or email. Saanich council started this mess in 2011 with two votes that said this property should stay in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), despite the recommendation to remove it from the ALR for over three decades in the Gordon Head Local Area Plan. A Saanich planning document from a 2011 council meeting supported removal of the property from the ALR and approval of the 16-lot subdivision. It also stated that a letter from the Agricultural Land Commission was written in 1980 stating that the property may be excluded from the ALR. In a recent conversation with the Vancouver Island regional planner for the Agricultural Land Commission, he stated that this support from the ALC for removal from the ALR still stands. He also stated that Saanich could legally rezone and approve the subdivision subject to removal of the property from the ALR (which can be done after third reading of a bylaw). Mayor Leonard can easily and legally resolve this issue, but he refuses to do so, and it is our neighbourhood that is at risk as a result. Ted and Lora Lea Saanich
Fletcher too smart for the rest of us I must commend you on having Tom Fletcher on your staff. In past articles he has shown how he is smarter than all those scientists, including Nobel winners, who think they have proven that human actions are effecting our climate and that something should be done about it. Now in the Sept. 17 paper he suggests he understands our laws better than a sitting judge. And how dare the BCTF present “arguments that are technical”, everyone knows that the legal system has nothing to do with technical points it is all about grand statements on justice. I don’t understand why on his byline you don’t include all the Phds and law degrees he must hold. Richard Motchman View Royal
To amalgamate would be great
Greater Victoria. It is almost a joke to have 13 municipalities within a city of about 350,000 residents. What has happened to cities such as Toronto and Halifax already amalgamated, for example? Are they not happy? It seems that life goes on normally after an adjustment period. Many people in Greater Victoria have already said yes to amalgamation, according to a recent survey. So, why are the municipal leaders in the Capital Region saying no or sstaying silent on this issue? Why is the provincial government keeping silent? Higher levels of government should show leadership and establish a more suitable form of governing body for the Region both economically and politically. Let us not talk about amalgamation year after year. Let’s do something about it. Salih Zeki Cinar Saanich
What do you think?
I totally agree with people who are raising their voice for the amalgamation of municipalities in

Baby fair brings kids’ performers Bobs & Lolo to Pearkes Children’s’ entertainment and informative seminars are on offer this weekend at the eighth annual Vancouver Island Baby Fair at Pearkes arena. Popular children’s performers and twotime Juno nominees Bobs & Lolo will perform on the main stage, and parents can experience talks on topics like preparing for birth, fitness for new moms and
financial tips for young families. “Most visitors to the baby fair come expecting some unique shopping from great local businesses and to find helpful information to make life a bit easier,” said fair producer Shirley Broback. “We try to present a number of topics at the main stage to let new moms and dads get the most out of their visit.
Jay Duncan, a doula, and Laura Warren will challenge parents-tobe to prepare for the birth of their child as they would a wedding or another major life event. “How often do we plan or prepare for special events or occasions in our lives,” Duncan said. “Think about your wedding, buying your home, preparing for an exam or research-
ing phone plans. What are you doing to prepare for your upcoming birth?” Broback said the event will be about more than just babies. It’s also a chance for parents to have a fun day out of the house. In addition to nearly 100 exhibitors and the main stage schedule, the fair features a fun kids’ corner, a baby changing zone, com-
fortable baby feeding area, café, and an onsite photography studio and photo contest. “The photo contest is always a big hit,,” Broback said.
“Each year the net proceeds of the contest are donated to a local charity; this year we’re proudly supporting the Victoria Society for Children with Autism.”
The baby fair runs Saturday, 10 a..m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See more at vancouverislandbabyfair.com. editor@saanichnews.com

Santa Claus (Dave LeGrand) braved the warm weather last weekend to hand out candy canes and route maps to participants in the Vancouver Island Mustang Association’s annual Toy Run. Submitted Photo
Early Christmas for Mustang fans Daniel Palmer News staff
Christmas came early for a throng of car enthusiasts gathered at a University of Victoria parking lot on Sunday. The 30th annual Vancouver Island Mustang Association Toy Run brought out more than 100 collector car owners to help raise toy and cash donations for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Fund. “The sun was shining. The last two years it was rain, so we were happy,” said organizer Carol LeGrand, who owns a few vintage Mustangs of her own. Santa stopped by with a few candy canes before drivers took
a one-hour cruise up to the Christmas tree farm on East Saanich Road, then back down to Beave Lake Park for a barbecue with Salvation Army officials. “We handed them a cheque for $1,200 as well as a ton of toys,” LeGrand said. The club has raised about $50,000 and thousands of toys in the past three decades to Salvation Army. Members also donated to Jeneece Place and Victoria Hospice this year. “We have AMCs, Trans Ams, Rancheros, Cougars, Turinos. We’re open to any Ford enthusiast,” LeGrand said. It’s about socializing and raising money for a good cause at the same time, she added. In the summer
months, Mustang Association members gather each Friday at KMS Tools and Equipment in Colwood, where the business helps raise donations for various charities. “They’re a good supporter of the community, they supply everything,” LeGrand said. “We share that space with the South Island Straightliners Racing Association.” To learn more about the Vancouver Island Mustang Association, visit vima.mysite.com or call 250-881-1423. “We’ve got teenagers right up to 70 year olds,” LeGrand said. “We’d love to have more people join us.”

The author of a study that estimates rising ferry fares have seriously damaged the provincial economy is standing by his conclusions in the face of sharp criticism from Transportation Minister Todd Stone. Peter Larose projected 31 million more passengers would have taken BC Ferries over the last 10 years had the province kept fare hikes to the rate of inflation. He pegged the losses at $2.3 billion in economic activity and $610 million in taxes to various levels of government. “I have extreme confidence in the results,” Larose said, adding they are more likely an underestimate. “I think it’s probably significantly higher.” He spoke to a policy session at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler Tuesday after Stone issued a letter and took to the airwaves to condemn the UBCM-sponsored study.

“It is unfortunate that the analysis speculates on what might have been, rather than providing any concrete solutions on how to take the coastal ferry system into the future in a cost effective and sustainable way,” Stone said in a Sept. 19 letter to UBCM’s president. The minister said the study failed to properly consider various factors, from the effects of the 2008-09 global recession to rising fuel prices and demographic changes. He said it was “irresponsible” and “unproductive” for UBCM to release the “unsubstantiated and sensational” estimates. Stone’s letter also said the analysis was flawed because it assumed all the money not spent due to reduced ferry travel went out of the province, instead of being spent in B.C. in other ways. Larose sought to reassure UBCM delegates that his projection is correct and doesn’t mean the economic damage in coastal B.C. is being offset by gains in

other parts of the province. But Tofino Coun. Ray Thorogood questioned that logic, arguing Lower Mainland residents deterred from a trip to Vancouver Island by high fares might instead head east to the Okanagan. “We’re not saying this is the be all and end all of all analysis,” said Campbell River Coun. Claire Moglove, who sits on the UBCM committee that commissioned the work. She said the aim is to do further work and engage the province in a real dialogue on stemming the decline in BC Ferries ridership. “What we want from the provincial government is to sit down and start talking about solutions.” Moglove added that UBCM decided to probe the impact of high fares because the province wouldn’t. Current rate caps allow for maximum increases of four per cent this year and 3.9 per cent in 2015.

SYNTHETIC OIL CHANGE
A German car with a price tag under $15,000 By Zack Spencer
Volkswagen has had an impressive ride here during the past few years, gaining market share and selling record numbers of cars – its best-selling car being the Jetta. When the last VW Jetta was introduced in 2011, it represented a major shift in the company’s sales philosophy. The decision was to make a larger sedan, yet drop the price to compete right in the heart of Canada’s compact segment, our largest sales category. With a starting price under $15,000 the Jetta is the biggest car in the compact class, offering a gateway into owning a German car, yet having the space and comfort North Americans expect. For 2015 VW continues with the same philosophy but ups the ante to include new engines, styling and interior amenities.
Looks
It would be easy to overlook the substantial updates to this new Jetta because the exterior tweaks are so subtle they need pointing out. The front grille, bumper and headlamps have all been replaced to include a bigger air opening and LED marker lights, plus xenon headlights are available. The back also receives a minor update that includes a new bumper, trunk and tail lamps. With a starting price of $14,990, the Trendline comes with hubcaps on 15-inch wheels. The midlevel $20,090 Comfortline can be equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and the $25,490 Highline is fitted with 17-inch alloys. Then there are the TDI diesel versions that range from $22,490 to $27,790. Volkswagen has a wide range of prices, equipment and engine choices to suit. The most popular is the Trendline Plus at $17,190 that includes the must have…heated front seats!
Inside
What isn’t obvious on first inspection is just how far the Jetta interior has come unless you know the previous model. It was a practical car but hardly luxurious or even sporty – spartan might be a good word. That has all changed with the new 2015 model thanks to new switches and dials that look and feel first rate. The drive event for the all-new Jetta was held in Middleburg Virginia, which I later discovered is in the wealthiest county in the United States. Huge homes on rolling farms, with stone fences and colonial designs reminds visitors that this is historic country; Middleburg witnesses action during the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War. The Salamander Resort was the backdrop for the introduction, an equestrian themed luxury resort that would make any new car look good. Surrounding it are rolling hills and winding roads, a perfect place to exercise the new suspension and engines in the Jetta. The previous car was recently updated to a full independent suspension and that carries over, as do disc brakes on all four wheels. The big news is a new 1.8L direct injection, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170hp but an impressive 185 lb.-ft of torque. Speaking of torque, the new TDI diesel engine pumps out a whopping Continued on next page

Pic of the Week
The Vauxhall ADAM S looks to be devilishly delicious little car. The 1.4-litre Turbo ECOTEC unit in the ADAM S delivers 50 per cent more power and 70 per cent more torque than its naturally-aspirated 1.4-litre combines with a six-speed manual gearbox, to propel it to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and produces a top speed of 200 km/h. Too bad that we will never see the General Motors UK product on our roads. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

After driving both the new engines back to back I’d be hard pressed to choose. I love the torque of the diesel and the impressive efficiency. (It is rated at just 6.7L/100km in the city and 4.7L on the highway.) But the new turbo gasoline engine is a more spirited unit that provides a more enthusiastic experience. This engine delivers 8.1L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. If I drove a lot, the diesel would be the way to go, but for more, fun the new 1.8L is impressive. Still in the mix is the old 2.0L 4-cylinder with 115hp offered in all Trendline and Comfortline models. This engine has been around since Moses was a boy, but it is a proven engine and offers a great starting price. At first glance the 2015 Jetta looks like a warmed over update but below the surface is substantial change. The highlights are the new interior and wonderful optional engines. Diesel or gas? – That’s a tough decision. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca T:11” T:11”

Getting Dirty in the Ganaraska Forest first rodeo in terms of dirt riding, it was in regards to single-track. I could use all the tips and tricks I could get. Furthermore, I could always use a little more practice riding in the sand. Yikes. Day 1 of the two-day adventure consisted of making sure the techniques for single-track riding were fresh in our minds. It’s best just to ignore the trees or whatever hazards

engulf you and the bike. Acknowledge them, but don’t stare. Otherwise, your fate will likely be sealed. After practicing in the various loops – there are different areas of their facility that cater to different techniques – it was off to the practice trail. Needless to say, I was not setting any speed records but it wasn’t about speed. That comes with time and experience. It was getting used to the fact that I didn’t have a lot of wiggle room and that my mind would want to play tricks on me if I didn’t relax, let the bike and myself breathe, and enjoy the best that machine and Mother Nature have to offer. Day 2 was a game changer. I was so happy that I did some basic skills the day before because I embraced the various tones and textures of the perpetually evolving geography around me. Rocks, gravel, soil, sand (oh, there was a lot of sand), steep inclines, tree stumps, sharp corners, you name it, the Ganaraska Forest has it. Though I didn’t go at it alone. Groups were organized by skill level and were lead by individuals who know that forest like the back of their hand. Heck, I would have been lost after the first two turns. If you found that throughout the day you wanted
a more advanced riding, or wanted to take it easier, movement between groups was entirely possible. The name of the game there is safety, with fun at an extremely close second. Challenging yourself, your mind, your body and the bike is all part of the package. And what an incredible way to do it. Trail Tours is open from May until the end of October. “Remember, the trees don’t move,” coaches Al Lakas, chief instructor at Trail Tours. These words offer some solace but little consolation to the confines of single-track riding. Claustrophobia is not a regularly referenced noun in my vocabulary, but when the local fauna and flora of the Ganaraska Forest are a hair’s length from your body, and the trail is inches wider than the handlebars of your bike, it’s hard to ignore. The Medusa-like temptation to fixate on upcoming vegetation must be overcome. If you do happen to focus on them, it could be game over. “Oh, shoot, there’s a stum…” Thud. There goes the front end of your bike and probably you. If you look down, your handlebars might do a jig-like dance, and chances are, that’s where you end up. Down. Breathing through the anxiety is one way of conquering the trails. Another is a strong foundation in riding. But the most important of them all: vision. Before heading out onto the over 300 kilometres of trails nestled within the 11,000 acres of Ganaraska Forest, Trail Tours instructor Al gives my riding partner and I a lesson in a much less confining location. Thank goodness. Nestled in the heart of the seemingly limitless dirt biking and motorized vehicle playground is Trail Tours (www.trailtour.com.) It’s just over an hour’s drive east from Toronto and well worth the short-haul journey. After parking the car and walking a few paces through a trail, the world gets a little brighter. Literally and metaphorically. The sinewy trees – well, in comparison to west coast wood – that lead us to home base dotn’t let in a ton of light, so at the end of the trail, where Trail Tour’s open field training facility stands before me, the sun overflows like a perfectly-iced cake (you can never have too much icing.) Also, I’m going dirt biking. How could that not brighten your day? Whether you’re a first timer or an experienced rider, they have a program for you. Though this wasn’t my

Cross country season near for high schoolers School route added to Beaver Lake race
“Basically we’re down to half a season and the kids need to get going before the league finally starts on Oct. 1.”
Travis Paterson News staff
Saturday’s Victoria Run Series cross country race at Beaver Lake is becoming the transition race as the first of the fall, last of the summer. It’s the first race for high school students, as dozens are using the event to warmup for the delayed Lower Island high school cross country season. The run starts at 1 p.m. And it’s also the last race of the Q Victoria Run Series, which ran five track events in the summer and three cross country events in September. With the school season missed due to the strike, Glenlyon Norfolk School coach Paul O’Callaghan asked Victoria Run Series director Chris Kelsall, also a sales associate with the Saanich News, to add a 4-kilometre event on Saturday, in addition to the open age, 8-kilometre route. “Basically we’re down to half a season and the kids need to get going before the league finally starts on Oct. 1 at Lambrick Park,” O’Callaghan said. “After that there’s only one more race, Oct. 9 at Beaver Lake, then it’s the Island championships and provincials. We’ll have 10 students. I do hope lots of kids come out, I’ve contacted other schools.” Independent school teams compete against the public schools and have been waiting out the strike.

- Paul O’Callaghan “It’s a great opportunity to get a race in. We’ve been running, and doing some hard runs, which are sufficient, but the season would be two races in by now, so we’re ready to go.” The provincial high school championships are in Colwood this year, on the grounds of the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. O’Callaghan is on the provincial high school cross country committee and put forward the idea of Juan de Fuca as a venue as he runs out there himself. This weekend’s race is $15 for adults and $10 for students. “We’ve had a couple dozen register right away and the response is from schools all the way up the Malahat,” Kelsall said. On Sunday the Victoria Run Series is hosting a season wrap up party in the Maple Room of the Sticky Wicket, 6:30 p.m. start with awards and a silent auction. All proceeds from the auction benefit the Mustard Seed food bank.
Spectrum secondary grad Brittany King returns for her second season with the UVic Vikes women’s cross-country team, which starts its season in Palo Alto, Calif, on Saturday at the Stanford Invitaional. Fourth-year 800-metre experts Grace Annear and Rachel Francois lead the team. The men’s XC team is also at Stanford this weekend, including fifth-year Reynolds grad John Pratt, a UVic law student. reporter@saanichnews.com

Tyndall vandals return

Vandals once again struck Tyndall Park sometime in the evening on Sept. 13 or 14, this time destroying a young tree along the sidelines of the soccer pitch.

Tree love grows in Saanich
Model contest aimed at youth Travis Paterson News staff

Erich Moerman loves his trees. So when the grounds and greenhouse keeper planted a 14-year-old Douglas fir on Wednesday at the Pacific Forestry Centre, he was beaming. “It should reach about 90 feet tall, not that we’ll ever be around to see it,” Moerman said on Wednesday during celebrations for National Tree Day at the centre. The Douglas fir isn’t just any tree: it’s one of seven saplings Moerman has nurtured from seeds he ordered from U.K.based Chiltern Seeds the same year he started working at the centre. The bluish tint to the tree is part of Chiltern’s selective breeding process, he said. “This little fella’s the only one left of seven that I started at home. It’s been in a pot all its life and it’s survived despite being subjected to draught, being blown over by wind (it spent quite a few years in a blustery Metchosin yard), and yet it

The Douglas fir’s namesake is commonly mistaken as being connected to James Douglas, but it was first officially identified by visiting Scottish botanist David Douglas in 1824. He included the common Western species with hundreds of species he took back to the United Kingdom. On Wednesday, the Pacific Forestry Centre relaunched the property’s David Douglas Trail, which was built in 1999.
Employees led participants on guilded nature walks through the trail. “The trail winds through all 18 acres and the Colquitz River, and the public are welcome to use it,” said Brad Stennes, director policy, planning and operations at the centre. “We hope more will now that we’ve cleaned it up.” The trail is now outfitted with “stations” along the route, with each including signage that detail the area’s ecosystem and trees, Stennes added. reporter@saanichnews.com

Phil Dauphinee and his grandsons sit down regularly to work on models. Granddad is a car guy, a member of the Scale Plastic Automotive Modeller club. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Harry, 10, and little brother Matthew, 7, are both submitting flashy Italian performance cars into the Island Classic Model Contest and Exhibition on Saturday at the Salvation Army Citadel Auditorium, 4030 Douglas St. “It’s quite common for the junior age modellers to get a little help from a parent or grandparent,” says Dauphinee, who helped the boys during a summer camping trip. “Harry has built a Ferrari Enzo model, and Matthew a Lamborghini Diablo.” SPAM started the Island Classic as an automotive modelling contest four years ago but added six more categories last year, each with various sub-classes, as well as one miscellaneous category. Adults tend to produce creative and complicated models, but the focus is on the kids, too, says Dauphinee. “What’s great for the younger juniors (14-andunder) are the snap kits, no glue necessary, though for the younger kids the snaps can also be difficult.” Anyone 18-and- Sci-fi model “The under who enters a Creature.” model is automatically qualified to win the Harry Page Memorial award as youth modeller of the year. Page was a local modeller who passed away at 65. The top modeller’s name will be engraved on the Harry Page Memorial Trophy. The winning modeller gets a $50 gift certificate to BC Shaver & Hobbies on Fort Street, where their model will be displayed. They also get a building workbench designed and built by Harry Page. The contest is open to viewing with a suggested $2 donation and starts at 9 a.m. with a noon deadline entry for judging. reporter@saanichnews.com

Q: HOW CAN I EASILY DECIDE IF I SHOULD KEEP SOMETHING? Barbara McDonell with Clutter Queen Services often works with people to get rid of unwanted items in advance of move. “I get them look at one item and ask, ‘do I love it and do I use it?’ If not, they should seriously consider donating it or selling it,” she says. “If they can’t answer right away that they love it, they usually don’t.” She recommends starting with large items to maximize downsizing efforts and get you thinking about whether your old furniture will fit in the new place. Another area ripe for decluttering, she says, is storage lockers. “I find that people are paying a lot of money for (outside) storage. People will often discover things they haven’t used in ages and may never use again.”

Downsizing workshop a good start Information session at Nellie McClung Library Travis Paterson News staff
Joanne Brodersen has seen the best and worst scenarios when it comes to moving. Among the worst are the people who have misjudged the weight and time of downsizing, says the DFH realtor. “I’ve worked with people who know they want to do it, but once they get into the process, they clearly haven’t realized whats involved,” she said. Dealing with sentimental items is physically taxing, she added. “I’ve seen the emotional toll, often these homes are places you’ve raised your family, where you’ve seen your kids grow up. Or it’s the home where the spouse deceased and now it’s time to move on. The main thing is you don’t know what to keep, and you don’t know how and where to get rid of a houseful of items.” As a service, Brodersen has gathered a team of local professionals for an Oct. 4 informational session on downsizing at the Nellie McClung Library. Estate lawyer Tejpaul Wirk from Mullin Demeo is a keynote speaker, speaking from his experience on dealing with estates and a new estate law. Ali Elznti and Julie Cookson from RBC will also be there, as well as Fabulous Home Staging, Actogether Moving Services, who specialize in moving seniors, landscaping and house cleaning services, and more. “It’s almost like an expo, there will be tables around the room and it’s not just geared to seniors, particularly, it’s for all ages, so adults can help their parents,” Brodersen said. “The baby boomers are coming into this stage, a huge amount of people in the next five to 10 years. We’re living longer, and some of us want to get the home cleaned up sooner, to be prepared. Some people are keeping the house nearly turnkey ready.” The group is hoping to do more presentations, maybe in the spring. “Really, it’s for any one who wants to get the ball rolling. Some people might need to think

James Prgye is enthusiastic now that he’s completed the downsizing process, moving into Saanich. His realtor Joanne Brodersen is part of a downsizing informational session Oct. 4. about doing it years ahead of time, to help their parents so the parents can make the decisions before the decisions need to be made for them.” The free event is at Nellie McClung Library, 3950 Cedar Hill Rd., on Oct. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m.
