Victoria author launches book Between 19 and 21, Tasha Waite embarked on two hitchhiking adventures across Canada and Mexico, and now she has written a book about her experiences. Waite, now 32, hitchhiked from her hometown Winnipeg to B.C. then back across the country to Ontario because she didn’t want to go to university or work in Winnipeg. “I basically was a free spirit who didn’t want to conform,” said Waite, now a Victoria resident. “It was my hippy phase.” Waite’s book, Wild Blues: Lessons from the road, is an account of her many escapades. On Sept. 30, there will be a book launch for Wild Blues at LaceyLou’s Tapas Lounge at 1320 Broad St., beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Charities line up for Victoria marathon Kevin Laird News staff

Josh Smith always had a dream to walk in the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon 8K road race, but fear always got in the way. Smith had tried at least twice to complete the race only to be beset with fear and anxiety. But last year with the help of Lifetime Networks support workers Alex and Steph Saunders, he accomplished his goal with a smile on his face. Saanich-based Lifetime Networks is a support group for people with disabilities and is one of 22 charities that participates in the marathon every year. Last year, Lifetime Networks raised more than $20,000 from the marathon through active participation and pledges. The Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon, which features four races, is coming up in October, but the annual pledge program has already started. The idea is to raise awareness and money for the participating charities by encouraging individuals to either walk or run for a charity while collecting pledges. Individuals can sign up at runvictoria.com to become part of an organization’s team. Over the last nine years, the program has raised more than $1 million for Victoria charities. Carlene Thompson, finance and fund development director for Lifetime Networks, said the partnership with the marathon and charity is a win-win scenario. The need for services is really growing and the need for creative services is really growing due to provincial government funding cutbacks.

“The marathon is so important for us. It is how we fund our bursary and scholarships, and we leverage our funding through it,” Thompson said. “The biggest part for us is the opportunity for the participants to be in such a great community event. It’s great experience for any of the charities that get involved.”

Ida Chong is running for mayor, betting she can revive a political career that looked bleak after she lost her Oak BayGordon Head seat in last year’s provincial election. A year ago it seemed improbable she would be seeking to unseat incumbent Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin in this fall’s municipal election. But, Chong said, she didn’t look at her defeat last fall as bitter sweet. “I take on every election as challenge,” she said. You work very hard and you do your best … that’s all you can ask.” Chong, a Saanich resident, spent 17 years in provincial politics as an MLA including 10 different ministerial portfolios as well as chairing various provincial government committees. Before that she served one term as a municipal councillor in Sannich At a press conference last week, Chong said she decided to run for the Victoria mayor’s job because she believes Victoria needs “strong, proven, experience leadership.” “I’ve represented this region for the past 20 years and I say

I care passionately about Victoria and its future.” University of Victoria political scientist Dr. Warren Magnusson said Chong’s entry has shaken up the race that appeared to be a two-person battle between Fortin and city councillor Lisa Helps. “One of the challenges Ida faces is how does she reach out to the voters in a that city in the last provincial election voted NDP.” Magnusson said Chong isn’t the first politician to go from provincial or federal politics back to municipal politics. Former MP Olivia Chow is currently battling to become the mayor of Toronto, and former premier Bill Vander Zalm attempted to become mayor of Vancouver while he was still the mayor of Surrey. “The hurdles for someone coming back from provincial or federal politics is the perception of partisanship. At the municipal level, voters tend to want their politicians to be nonpartisan,” Magnusson said Fortin and Helps said they welcome Chong into the race because now city voters will have a clear choice. Fortin said he’s proud to put forward his political record – “a record of building a progressive city, a record of building a livable city, a record of building a prosperous city.” “I look forward to the upcom-

ing two months for the opportunity to put forward both our record and vision for Victoria.” Chong has her vision for the city too, but admits she is no shoo-in for the mayor’s post. Chong says she has support from the business community, trade unions and “just every day Victoria residents.” Fortin and Helps claim the same level of support. In the 2011 provincial election, Fortin took a comfortable number of votes from his closest competitor. This time, he said, the race is between himself and Chong. Chong puts her odds at winning at about 50 per cent. Magnusson said ideological differences will always play a part, but no matter if a politician is running federally, provincially or municipally it always comes down to getting out the vote. “I think voters do deserve a choice,” Chong said. I believe I still I have something to give to public life. “I’ll run hard and take nothing for granted. I’ll learn as I move forward and bring everything I’ve got.”

Maritime museum eyes move to Steamship building

B.C. faces many growth challenges Statistics Canada’s latest population projections do not bode well for B.C.’s future, on a number of counts. The federal agency has B.C. falling to fourth-largest province in the country, with Alberta moving ahead of it to third. This is projected to happen over the next 20 years or so. B.C. will still be growing — but at a lesser rate than Alberta is projected to grow. Perhaps more dramatically though, B.C.’s population of seniors is expected to grow the most, to 27 per cent of the population by 2038. This is a higher-than-usual percentage of seniors, who for the most part will not be working and contributing to long-term economic growth. At the same time, they will put added pressure on the health care system. This is not to say that seniors are bad for a province or an economy. It is simply that their needs bring new challenges to an economy which is already hobbled by minimal growth, and to a province where every resource-based proposal is met with a fury of opposition. A province cannot thrive long-term without economic growth. Simple population growth is not enough. B.C. is already a very expensive place to live. At the same time, few younger people have the opportunity to make really good incomes, and are thus handicapped from getting ahead. Taxes in B.C. are already quite high, which is masked by the sleight-of-hand about low income tax rates. However, when the seven per cent PST, ICBC rates, ferry fares, BC Hydro rates (all of which are tax increases), TransLink taxes and MSP premiums are taken into account, taxes are quite onerous on many people already. Mining important to B.C. As mayors and councillors from cities all over B.C. meet at the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities conference in Whistler next week, it is a good time to remind ourselves that our rural, resourcebased towns and communities have little in the way of economic diversity and rely largely on our natural resources such as mining. It is time for us to stop thinking only about ourselves in the province’s urban centers and to start thinking about what the lives of rural B.C. families would be like if we did not support mining and mineral exploration. For example, mining now contributes over $9 billion to B.C.’s economy, and exploring for mineral deposits is a major source of safe, sustainable economic activity for rural communities and the families who live in them. The mining industry in B.C. is responsible for 45,700 permanent jobs and generated more than $930 million in government tax revenue last year, including $74 million generated directly for local municipalities. Over the next 10 years, it is estimated that new growth in mining and exploration will require 20,000 new workers. I am sure that, at some point, the deliberations of those assembled at the UBCM will turn to the recent Mount Polley incident. I urge the delegates to resist the urge to jump on the Mount Polley bandwagon. It would be a shame

if they were to use the incident as a justification to do harm to the industry, potentially even trying to shut it down. The more prudent course would be to find out what caused the breach and seek a solution that would preserve this valuable industry for future generations. Mining provides some of the highest paying jobs in B..C, and our province is geologically wealthy. I urge the mayors and councillors attending UBCM to think of those families who rely on the jobs created by mining. The jobs this industry creates will keep our children and grandchildren close to home here in B.C., supporting local small businesses and strengthening our communities for generations to come. Fletcher too smart for the rest of us I must commend you on having Tom Fletcher on your staff. In past articles he has shown how he is smarter than all those scientists, including Nobel winners, who think they have proven that human actions are effecting our climate and that something should be done about it. Now in the Sept. 17 paper he suggests he understands our

laws better than a sitting judge. And how dare the BCTF present “arguments that are technical”, everyone knows that the legal system has nothing to do with technical points it is all about grand statements on justice. Rocky Horror Show arrives at the Metro Transvestite Frank N’ Furter returns to Victoria this month when the The Rocky Horror Show arrives with a live performances at Metro Studio Theatre. When unsuspecting newlyweds Brad Majors (Randall Peters) and Janet Weiss (Sarah Ann Murphy) find themselves stranded in the woods in the middle of the night, they are terrified to arrive at the mysterious door of Frank N’ Furter (Griffin Lea). Inside, they find that this charming, yet utterly unpredictable transvestite runs his household in the most unusual of ways. For decades, the audiences of Victoria have been attending Halloween screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Roxy Theatre. Rebel Knock Out Productions’s The Rocky Horror Show will provide all the nostalgia of that intimate, integral part of our city’s culture, and give Victoria

the chance to take that experience to the next level with this live performance. The Rocky Horror Show will be brought to life under the direction of Atomic Vaudeville’s Britt Small, and will feature a live rock and roll band under the musical direction of Stephanie Sartore. With an all-star cast of 15 Victoria actors, including Kelly Hudson as Riff Raff, Stephanie Sartore as Magenta, Candace Woodland as Columbia and Alex Judd as both Eddie and Dr. Scott, Rebel Knock Out Productions promises an evening of supreme talent and demented debauchery. A German car with a price tag under $15,000 By Zack Spencer

Volkswagen has had an impressive ride here during the past few years, gaining market share and selling record numbers of cars – its best-selling car being the Jetta. When the last VW Jetta was introduced in 2011, it represented a major shift in the company’s sales philosophy. The decision was to make a larger sedan, yet drop the price to compete right in the heart of Canada’s compact segment, our largest sales category. With a starting price under $15,000 the Jetta is the biggest car in the compact class, offering a gateway into owning a German car, yet having the space and comfort North Americans expect. For 2015 VW continues with the same philosophy but ups the ante to include new engines, styling and interior amenities.

It would be easy to overlook the substantial updates to this new Jetta because the exterior tweaks are so subtle they need pointing out. The front grille, bumper and headlamps have all been replaced to include a bigger air opening and LED marker lights, plus xenon headlights are available. The back also receives a minor update that includes a new bumper, trunk and tail lamps. With a starting price of $14,990, the Trendline comes with hubcaps on 15-inch wheels. The midlevel $20,090 Comfortline can be equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and the $25,490 Highline is fitted with 17-inch alloys. Then there are the TDI diesel versions that range from $22,490 to $27,790. Volkswagen has a wide range of prices, equipment and engine choices to suit. The most popular is the Trendline Plus at $17,190 that includes the must have…heated front seats!

It was a practical car but hardly luxurious or even sporty – spartan might be a good word. That has all changed with the new 2015 model thanks to new switches and dials that look and feel first rate. The drive event for the all-new Jetta was held in Middleburg Virginia, which I later discovered is in the wealthiest county in the United States. Huge homes on rolling farms, with stone fences and colonial designs reminds visitors that this is historic country; Middleburg witnesses action during the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War. The Salamander Resort was the backdrop for the introduction, an equestrian themed luxury resort that would make any new car look good. Surrounding it are rolling hills and winding roads, a perfect place to exercise the new suspension and engines in the Jetta. The previous car was recently updated to a full independent suspension and that carries over, as do disc brakes on all four wheels. The big news is a new 1.8L direct injection, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170hp but an impressive 185 lb.-ft of torque. Speaking of torque, the new TDI diesel engine pumps out a whopping

After driving both the new engines back to back I’d be hard pressed to choose. I love the torque of the diesel and the impressive efficiency. (It is rated at just 6.7L/100km in the city and 4.7L on the highway.) But the new turbo gasoline engine is a more spirited unit that provides a more enthusiastic experience. This engine delivers 8.1L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. If I drove a lot, the diesel would be the way to go, but for more, fun the new 1.8L is impressive. Still in the mix is the old 2.0L 4-cylinder with 115hp offered in all Trendline and Comfortline models. This engine has been around since Moses was a boy, but it is a proven engine and offers a great starting price. At first glance the 2015 Jetta looks like a warmed over update but below the surface is substantial change. The highlights are the new interior and wonderful optional engines. Day 2 was a game changer. I was so happy that I did some basic skills the day before because I embraced the various tones and textures of the perpetually evolving geography around me. Rocks, gravel, soil, sand (oh, there was a lot of sand), steep inclines, tree stumps, sharp corners, you name it, the Ganaraska Forest has it. Though I didn’t go at it alone. Groups were organized by skill level and were lead by individuals who know that forest like the back of their hand. Heck, I would have been lost after the first two turns. If you found that throughout the day you wanted

a more advanced riding, or wanted to take it easier, movement between groups was entirely possible. The name of the game there is safety, with fun at an extremely close second. “Remember, the trees don’t move,” coaches Al Lakas, chief instructor at Trail Tours. These words offer some solace but little consolation to the confines of single-track riding. Claustrophobia is not a regularly referenced noun in my vocabulary, but when the local fauna and flora of the Ganaraska Forest are a hair’s length from your body, and the trail is inches wider than the handlebars of your bike, it’s hard to ignore. The Medusa-like temptation to fixate on upcoming vegetation must be overcome. If you do happen to focus on them, it could be game over. “Oh, shoot, there’s a stum…” Thud. There goes the front end of your bike and probably you. If you look down, your handlebars might do a jig-like dance, and chances are, that’s where you end up. Down. Breathing through the anxiety is one way of conquering the trails. Another is a strong foundation in riding. But the most important of them all: vision. Before heading out onto the over 300 kilometres of trails nestled within the 11,000 acres of Ganaraska Forest, Trail Tours instructor Al gives my riding partner and I a lesson in a much less confining location. Thank goodness. Nestled in the heart of the seemingly limitless dirt biking and motorized vehicle playground is Trail Tours (www.trailtour.com.) It’s just over an hour’s drive east from Toronto and well worth the short-haul journey. After parking the car and walking a few paces through a trail, the world gets a little brighter. Literally and metaphorically. The sinewy trees – well, in comparison to west coast wood – that lead us to home base dotn’t let in a ton of light, so at the end of the trail, where Trail Tour’s open field training facility stands before me, the sun overflows like a perfectly-iced cake (you can never have too much icing.) Brewery celebrates win at world championship Vancouver Island Brewery has been honoured on the world stage. The brewery has been awarded three medals at the Tastings.com World Beer Championships; two seasonal beers and one of its recent launches each won silver medals in their respective categories. “These are truly wonderful honours and we could not be more proud,” said Murray Langdon, general manager of Vancouver Island Brewery. “It is a great feeling to have our commitment to quality and creativity recognized.” Beachcomber Summer Ale took silver in the Weizen Hefe category, scoring 86 points; Black Betty, a blackberry saison, won silver in the burgeoning fruit beer category with 87 points; Sabotage India Session Ale earned 89 points, also good for silver in the American Style IPA category. “To have all three entries receive awards is a remarkable feat,” added Langdon, “and to have both established beers and one of our new launches recognized shows that Vancouver Island Brewery’s history of innovation and creativity is alive and well.” The brewing team, led by brewmaster Ralf Pittroff, expressed gratitude in winning the three awards. “This is a great honour,” said Pittroff, a Bavarian-born and trained

passengers would have taken B.C. Ferries over the last 10 years had the province kept fare hikes to the rate of inflation. He pegged the losses at $2.3 billion in economic activity and $610 million in taxes to various levels of government. “I have extreme confidence in the results,” Larose said, adding they are more likely an underestimate. “I think it’s probably significantly higher.” He spoke to a policy session at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler Tuesday after Stone issued a letter and took to the airwaves to condemn the UBCM-sponsored study. “It is unfortunate that the analysis speculates on what might have been, rather than providing any concrete solutions on how to take the coastal ferry system into the future in a cost effective and sustainable way,” Stone said in a Sept. 19 letter to UBCM’s president. The minister said the

study failed to properly consider various factors, from the effects of the 2008-09 global recession to rising fuel prices and demographic changes. He said it was “irresponsible” and “unproductive” for UBCM to release the “unsubstantiated and sensational” estimates. Stone’s letter also said the analysis was flawed because it assumed all the money not spent due to reduced ferry travel went out of the province, instead of being spent in B.C. in other ways. Larose sought to reassure UBCM delegates that his projection is correct and doesn’t mean the economic damage in coastal B.C. is being offset by gains in other parts of the province. But Tofino Coun. Ray Thorogood questioned that logic, arguing Lower Mainland residents deterred from a trip to Vancouver Island by high fares might instead head east to the Okanagan.

“We’re not saying this is the be all and end all of all analysis,” said Campbell River Coun. Claire Moglove, who sits on the UBCM committee that commissioned the work. She said the aim is to do further work and engage the province in a real dialogue on stemming the decline in BC Ferries ridership. “What we want from the provincial government is to sit down and start talking about solutions.” Moglove added that UBCM decided to probe the impact of high fares because the province wouldn’t. B.C. Ferries is converting its pair of Spirit-class vessels to a dual-fuel system that uses liquefied natural gas, estimated to be half the price of marine diesel. The Spirit of Vancouver Island and Spirit of British Columbia are the workhorses of the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay run, carrying a quarter of the fleet’s passengers and vehicles and accounting for about 15 per cent of the fuel used. Volunteers sought for local marathon With just three weeks until the 35th annual GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, the event is still in need of volunteers to fill a variety of areas. The marathon – on Sunday, Oct. 12 – requires race day volunteers as well as individuals for the race expo and for assisting with course set up. More than 1,600 volunteers are needed annually to ensure the event is run smoothly and efficiently. There are many areas individuals can volunteer on race weekend including at the race expo from Oct. 10 to Oct.12; finish line set up on the Saturday; course marshals and water stations on Sunday – Race Day. Victoria’s building boom is continuing, with many new developments expected to be completed soon. Developments currently in progress include a variety of mixed residential and commercial, solely commercial and solely residential buildings. Below is an overview of some of the major construction projects currently happening in the city of Victoria. The Era is located at 726746 Yates St. It is a 125,000square-foot 16-storey highrise consisting of 157 homes. Construction on the $5.5 million project started in the fall of 2012, and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2015. The developer of the Era is Concert Properties. Construction on 2950 Jutland Rd., formerly known as the Boardwalk, began in the fall of 2012. It is expected to be completed in January or February 2015. The sixstorey building is a mix of residential, retail and office space. It is 65,660 square feet in total, with 51,000 square feet reserved for office space, 2,500 square feet for retail space and eight residential units. The developer of 2950 Jutland Rd. is Jawl Properties. The Duet, located at 640 Michigan St. consists of two separate buildings next to each other. One is four storeys tall and one is eight storeys tall. There are 90

The Era, located on Yates Street, is expected to be completed by next spring. residential suites in total. Construction on the buildings started in February 2013, and they are expected to be completed this November. The developer of the Duet is Chard Development. Midtown Court, located at 740 Hillside Ave., will be the home of Andrew Sheret Ltd.’s headquarters in Victoria. Andrew Sheret is the developer of Midtown Court. The building is 60,000 square feet in total, with up to 38,232 square feet of office space available and up to 5,580 square feet of retail space. It is expected to be completed on Oct. 15 of this year.

Groups work together to clean Victoria shoreline

Volunteer cleanup teams joined forces over the weekend to remove litter and debris along the Inner Harbour shoreline stretching over four kilometers from Fisherman’s Wharf to Spinnaker’s Brewpub. Spearheaded by the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority and the Victoria Police Department, 50 volunteers from eight community teams removed more than 276 kilograms of garbage. “It was a heartwarming way to spend a Saturday morning,” said Sonterra Ross, GVHA chief operating officer. “The Inner Harbour is recognized as

the jewel in Victoria’s crown and that was reflected this weekend as our harbour community rallied together to make sure the shoreline remains clean, healthy and accessible.” The inaugural event, while inspired by similar initiatives across Canada, is an entirely “made-in-Victoria harbour” solution to the scourge of litter along the shoreline. Eight teams participated in the Victoria harbour cleanup, comprised of 50 volunteers from: GVHA, Victoria Police, Waste Management, Red Fish Blue Fish, Spinnakers, Inn at Laurel Point, Delta and Coast Harbour hotels.

The adventurous among the foursome should brave North America’s first European Cyrotherapy Cold Sauna. There will be a moment during the sub-zero temperature stage when one’s sanity will be questioned but the afterglow will be worth it! Anyway, I’m the car guy not health advisor so here are some tips on how and where to get the most out of the Journey for the weekend. I’ve done quite a bit of wine research in the area so we’ll start there…a designated driver will be required! One of my nearby favourites is Arrowleaf Cellars, a family operated winery located nearby at 1574 Camp Road, in Lake Country. It specializes in cool-climate wines and I recommend the Bacchus (arrowleafcellars. com). Next door is the Ex

Nihilo Winery, which has an awesome building and a very crisp Riesling (exnihilovineyards.com). A few minutes’ drive along Camp Road brings you to the Gray Monk Estate Winery and ideal lunch spot. Many photo opps along the way and still more from the vantage point of the deck, which overlooks lush vineyards stretching down to Okanagan Lake. The Meadery at Planet Bee, 5011 Bella Vista Road, Vernon, is an intriguing spot. There they make “Honeymoon Mead”, an ancient drink made from fermented honey and water and dubbed the Beverage of Love” (planetbee.com). Downtown Vernon has transformed large 27 blank walls into colourful artists’ canvases depicting Vernon’s rich heritage. They can be viewed either with a guide or you can pick up a self-guided tour booklet. Just a few man-made spots. The northern and central Okanagan’s natural beauty
