Nezul Be Hunuyeh, part of the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada, opened its doors to the public last weekend as part of a barbecue and open house celebrating the completion of renovations to their building. The open-house was held at the newly renovated Nezul Be Hunuyeh office building across from Cottonwood Park. Dozens of people, including Nak’azdli Chief Fred Sam and Tl’azt’en acting Chief Paul Felix, came out throughout the afternoon to tour the new parts of the building. Renovations include the addition of a new board room and reception area, a family room and various upgrades to

Prince addressed the crowd to thank the staff for their patience and hard work. “I’d like to welcome everyone here, I know this has been a long haul for the staff, they’ve been worked to the bone. They’ve also had a lot of patience while the building has been in progress,” said Prince. Prince said that the completion of the building addition was anoth-

Adding “I think this is a facility that will help us to get on that path and stay on it.” The renovations began in October of 2012 and will help to facilitate the work Nezul Be does within the first nations community.

Petronas LNG talks continue, minister says

THE FORT ST. JAMES 4-H CLUB wOULD LIkE TO SAY THAnk YOU TO EvERYOnE FOR THE LOCAL COMMUnITY SUPPORT THAT HAS MADE OUR 2014 4-H YEAR SO GREAT.

BY TOM FLETCHER Black Press WHISTLER – B.C.’s minister for natural gas development is playing down a threat from the president of Malaysian energy giant Petronas to withdraw from its $10 billion project to export liquefied natural gas from a terminal near Prince Rupert. Petronas CEO Shamsul Abbas was quoted in the Financial Times Thursday accusing Canada and B.C. of “uncertainty, delay and short vision” in its regulations, taxes and “lack of appropriate incentives” to invest. B.C. minister Rich Coleman said Thursday he contacted Petronas when he saw the report. He said Abbas has expressed similar concerns before, but B.C. negotiators continue to work on terms for a master development agreement. Coleman said company representatives assured him the province has met every deadline Petronas has asked for in the discussions, and he and Premier Christy Clark are set to meet with Abbas when he visits Canada next week. “We know that we are getting to a spot competitively, globally, because everybody’s told us that, but he’s representing the interests of Petronas as we go through this,” Coleman said. “We’re going to represent the interests of British Columbia, to make sure B.C. gets its share of this opportunity.” The Malaysian stateowned company is leading a consortium that includes Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Brunei investors for a pipeline and LNG processing in northern B.C. Petronas paid $5 billion last year to take over Progress Energy Canada, which has major shale gas holdings in northeast B.C. and Alberta. The B.C. government plans to pass legislation in October to establish a tax on LNG

exports. Coleman said the provincial tax is a small part of the negotiations, which include B.C.’s air quality requirements and protection of fish habitat at the Lelu Island site on

the North Coast. Fisheries impact from construction of the port could cause Petronas to change its design, which would delay development, but the project is not at

risk, Coleman said. “I think the only risk to any project in B.C. and anywhere in the world is the price of natural gas,” Coleman said. “If you can’t get the return on your

investment and capital from the price you can sell it for, you’re not making the final investment decision, but that’s always been the case.”

Housing shortages Fort St. James is about to lose four residents due to lack of housing. The roof that my family sleeps under and calls our home has been sold, giving us sixty days to find other living arrangements. To date, I have been searching for two and a half months. This is getting outrageous! What if we don’t want to jump on purchasing a home just to stay here or, in fact, what if we do not have the funding options for a down payment, etc? How is Fort St. James as a community supposed to grow if there is nowhere to house families? It’s coming down to me approaching locals in our grocery stores, while I’m attending yard sales and asking them if they know of places to rent. It is getting embarrassing. I have officially exhausted my search on rentals here. Actually, I have expanded my search into the surrounding areas, which would mean a daily commute back and forth to and from Fort St. James twice a day. We have a life here that we have built due to the fact that, we like Fort St. James. So what would you do, commute daily to the next town after your work/ school day is over just to eat, sleep and do it all over again? No, what would be the point, Yes, I’m aware some people do this. Why would I commute when I can easily find employment, schooling, local resources and convenience somewhere else? This is plain crazy. We are in need of rentals, low-income housing, something. For all of you home owners that have had your empty houses on the market for over three years, you should really think about renting, maybe easier options on rent to own, something. Come on Fort St. James, this community pulls together on everything, lets pull together and continue helping this town GROW! Or, it’s going to eventually be the same families because of generations left here that have been here forever, working the same job, same daily routine. No growth. #lovefortstjames Thank you for reading. Ashley Dunn

Enbridge’s new round of advertising

We are about to face yet another barrage of Enbridge Northern Gateway pipelines advertisements. The last round had glitzy nature photos and poems which ran in various newspapers including the Caledonia Courier. It is still pretty fresh in my mind, certainly not because they shed a positive light on the pipelines project as Enbridge thought they would. The most outrageous ad in my opinion was The western red cedar-- “It’s lived here for hundreds of years. It should live for hundreds more. And not make way for a pipeline.” Shortly after those ads ran Enbridge’s contracted crews, executing provincial-issued investigative permits, cut down ancient cedars in Haisla traditional territory near Kitimat. Fourteen of the trees destroyed had been culturally modified in some way by the Haisla people; living evidence of their history years before British Columbia became a colony. Now, they are getting personal. In presenting their new “Life Takes Energy” advertising campaign to the Financial Post last week, the company said “when people’s energy and Enbridge’s energy meet beautiful things happen, whether that is a baby’s first bath, a car ride with your dog, an unforgettable dinner or the trip of a lifetime, all these amazing moments that define our quality of life, Enbridge is there in a small way”. Enbridge Northern Gateway’s web site ad states “We understand that your life takes energy. And we are proud to bring it to you.” I find myself wondering, is Enbridge Northern Gateway proud of the large part they are playing in Mother Earth’s suffering?

Northern Health cuts back transportation routes, adds online booking system JESSE COLE Caledonia Courier

Northern Health’s connections transportation program is undergoing some changes this autumn - some of them good and some of them not so great. The medical authority for the northern region of British Columbia revealed recently in a press release that they would be cutting back some of their transportation routes schedules, citing a decline in regular usage. Similarly, Northern Health has created a new online booking tool to compliment their telephone service as well as introduced new GPS tracking tools so that loved ones can track patients during their trips. The routes that will be affected come today (Oct. 1) are as follows: Prince George to Fort St. John route will see its buses operate only two days per week rather than the three it has previously

ran. The Mackenzie to Prince George route will see its operations cut to one day (Wednesday) per week and the Fort Nelson to Dawson Creek route will also see its services reduced to one day per week, alternating between Tuesdays and Thursdays. The changes to Northern Health’s transportation program is part of a number of upcoming additions to the service based on passenger usage data and customer feedback. Reina Pharness, Northern Health’s external contracts manager said in a press release. “This is a unique service that is offered to ensure all northerners have access to health care services.” Pharness added, “The planning for this service is ongoing and very much dependent on the usage; we do modify, increase and reduce service depending on the demand.” The transportation program, which started in 2006, currently consists of five

minibuses and six coach buses that are both wheelchair accessible. The ridership totals around 13,000 Northern Health patients.

Literacy groups receive government funding to improve training JESSE COLE Caledonia Courier Three literacy training programs in Fort St. James have received around $70,000 in funding from the provincial government to improve their services. The three programs, which are part of the larger Plant the Seeds of Literacy program, focus on literacy training for adults, families and aboriginal communities. The project that focuses on adult literacy training received a total of $32,000 while the families program and aboriginal program received $22,000 and $21,999, respectively. The programs are part of the Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP) which is an initiative that seems to provide financial backing to non-profit literacy projects which an emphasis on accessibility to students,

First Nations and community centres. A CALP program is partnered with a post-secondary institution, with the adults and family literacy programs partnering with the College of New Caledonia (CNC) and the Fort St. James public library. The aboriginal learners program is a collaborative partnership between CNC and Nak’azdli First Nation’s social development department. The purpose of partnering these initiatives with a postsecondary institution in the region is to help bridge the divide between literacy training and further, formal postsecondary education and career training programs. CALP projects are intended by design to suit the needs of those they cater towards; young parents, aboriginal learners and other adults in the community who are in

need. Classes, which are available in both one-on-one sessions and small group settings, are administered by trained volunteers. MLA for Nechako Lakes, John Rustad said of the programs, “Providing opportunities for adult learners to improve their literacy skills is critical to enchaining our citizens’ quality of life and allows people to participate
