around Duncan Lake. The crew stayed in a two-storey house on the west side of the Lardeau River, overlooking the lake. They didn’t have a bathhouse, so Plotnikoff and another fellow built a steam bath on a barge. At the time, parts of the old sawmill were still standing — his father actually worked there during World War II when it was owned by George Soukeroff of Pass Creek. Although abandoned, it was in immaculate shape. “Nothing was rusty. Walking around, I found a vise and asked my dad if I could take it home. He said ‘Why not? It’s been here forever.’ I’ve still got it.” They stayed three months, surveying “all over the place up the mountain,” but nothing came of it. At one point, a company executive arrived from Vancouver in a seaplane. “He said ‘Do you want to go home? I’ll give you a ride.’ I was too scared to go in a seaplane.” Plotnikoff ended up back at Cominco and in 1953 got a construction job on the Waneta dam.

GLADSTONE This boomtown along the Columbia and Western Railway was first mentioned in the Brooklyn News of August 20, 1898. It was located about eight kilometers east of Christina Lake and presumably named after William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98), the then-recently deceased former British prime minister. A post office operated there from 1899 to 1903. On January 6, 1900, the Phoenix Pioneer reported “On account of there being another town in Manitoba of the same name, Gladstone, on McRae Creek, has been changed to Coryell.” This honoured surveyor Jack Arthur Coryell (1861-1912) and possibly his brothers Will and Frank. The Coryells came to BC from Ontario in 1892 and did a great deal of surveying in the

Okanagan, where Jack is credited with both laying out and naming the Kelowna townsite. He moved to the Boundary in 1895 and surveyed the Grand Forks, Phoenix, and Carson townsites, as well as the route for the Columba and Western from Grand Forks to Midway. (There’s a Coryell Road in both Grand Forks and Kelowna.) It’s unclear, however, if he also surveyed the townsite that bore his name. Despite the name change, Coryell was still often called Gladstone. No photos of the town were known to exist until Marie Smith of San Clemente, Calif. produced one showing her mother and grandfather among a group of people and horses outside the Gladstone Hotel in 1899. It was printed in the Boundary Historical Society’s 15th report in 2006.

Now with school back in session, thoughts of Graduation Day are at the forefront of many Grade 12 students and their parents. But along with the pomp and circumstance of the graduation ceremonies also comes the inevitable cost of dressing up for the memorable moment. Not every family can afford or has the desire to go shopping in big centres for that perfect dress that may only see the light of day for that particular moment. With that in mind, last year a Trail woman came up with the idea of Cinderella’s Closet. An opportunity for those with that expensive evening dress sitting in the closet to pay it forward by offering it up at a reduced price to help shoppers who don’t want to face big price tags. This year’s event is slated for Oct. 16 from 6-9 p.m. at the Glenmerry Hall in Trail, when all dresses and accessories will have a set price or be up for auction during the fashion show. Lisa Frisk, who successfully organized the inaugural event in 2013, is hoping word spreads to other West Kootenay communities where families face a similar budget crunch. “We did have some girls from Castlegar come over last year. Hopefully we can get the word out to even more.” What eager buyers found was an abundant of affordable and fashionable dresses. The ready-towear affair helped a dozen girls find their perfect prom dress at a fraction of the retail price. “Last year we had a $5 dress rack and the range of prices went all the way up to $250 for the most expensive dress,” said Frisk. And it’s not only dresses that will be available for purchase. During a recent dress drive, Frisk said they received plenty of accessories as well. “One lady brought in an amazing pair of shoes,” she said. While Cinderella’s Closet has some fabulous dresses left over from last year’s inaugural event, Frisk is still seeking more “current” ones. “We have about 50 dresses if not more,” she said, adding, “but we definitely need some more current ones.” Frisk explained that dresses could either be donated or sold on consignment. “If we sell it on consignment, the seller gets 70 per cent back, 25 per cent goes to the Canadian Cancer Society and five per cent goes to the J.L.

Crowe 2015 Grad Class. Frisk added if the items are donated then a bigger share goes out to the causes and many of the profits made on consignment were donated back as well. All she asks is that donated or re-sale gowns and wares are clean and mended before being brought to the hall. Collecting fancy attire and planning the evening’s roster requires teamwork, so once again, Frisk has partnered with Allison McCarthy from the Canadian Cancer Society. Dresses sold last year brought in nearly $600 for the branch. And it’s not only graduating students seeking out the bargain price formal wear. “Some of the moms bought dresses, never mind their kids,” said Frisk told the Trail Times after last year’s event. “And the girls that found dresses, it was so cute because they tried it on and then they were just walking around the event in this dress that they were buying.” Besides more vendors attending the second annual event on Oct. 16, there are also more prizes up for grabs. For one lucky winner, the grand prize includes hair styling and full makeup on prom day, Frisk mentioned, adding that the appointment is already penciled in at Luca Salon. “We are still looking for donations for prizes,” she said. “But it’s really exciting because this year is going to be even bigger and better.” For information, email Frisk at Lisa_rkoerber@hotmail.com or text 250-231-5181.

The indoor soccer season is here and Nelson Youth Soccer has been busy accepting online registrations. The service has been available online at www.nys.ca and registrations have been rolling in for the 2014/15 fall and winter sessions. Registration is open until October 8 with early bird pricing available until October 3. Youth and adult programs will be running at the indoor soccer facility, 308 Cedar St. in Nelson, starting October 14. “There are no major changes from last year’s format,” said Chuck Bennett, Nelson Youth Soccer xhair. This is the first year that NYS has run the indoor programs. The local association, with the assistance of the City of Nelson, purchased the indoor soccer facility located on Cedar Street from the Soccer Quest organization. The purchase, which was aided by a $350,000 city loan to NYS, will be a major benefit to City of Nelson taxpayers and the 1,200 people who enjoy the sport year round. At the time of the purchase, Bennett said NYS is thrilled with the purchase, and adds that Soccer Quest is owed

NYS entered into a partnership and a 10-year lease agreement with the city to run the facility as of September 1. Nelson Youth Soccer will have until the end of 2020 to re-pay the loan. While there are new owners, the indoor programs offered will continue as usual. The mini leagues will continue to be held on the weekends for those young players aged 4 to 7 years old. The youth leagues, ages 8 to 14+

years old will run weekdays. There will also be a rep development program similar to previous years as well as usual variety of adult leagues. “Space is always limited so please register early to avoid disappointment,” added Bennett. “We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you on the field. Kaslo recycling moving to transfer station? Tamara Hynd West Kootenay Advertiser

Staff of the Regional District of Central Kootenay have been directed to research the feasibility of moving Kaslo’s recycling bins to the Kaslo transfer station. Currently, the Village of Kaslo works yard has two recycling bins from before the village was part of the Multi Materials BC curbside collection program. One bin is for cardboard and one blue bin used by residents and businesses for other recyclables. While Kaslo has signed on with the MMBC curbside recycling program, local habits seem hard to break. Most residents continue to drop their recycling in the bins rather than leave it on the curb. As a result, the recycling truck is rarely full after its rounds through town. RDCK director Jimmie Holland said the village asked the RDCK if they would consider moving the blue bin to the transfer station to en-

courage residents to increase their curbside recycling usage. However, commercial users may not like the change from two blocks to a 12 km return drive with the added time and cost. Another problem Holland pointed out is for Area D residents who also use these bins when they come to town to perform errands and shopping. Currently there are no recycling facilities at the Kaslo transfer station which is located six kilometres west of the village on Kaslo West Road. The transfer station takes garbage, wood scraps, batteries and appliances but not recy-

cling. Holland said the request for RDCK staff to research the feasibility of the move is “to generate good discussion. There are two local governments who work great together trying to maintain a good recycling program at reasonable costs. But there are shortfalls in logic. People are trying to do the right thing.” RDCK resource recovery manager Mike Morrison will be heading the review. Public consultation will be a part of the process. The board expects the report to be received by January 30, clarifying the costs.

Spring Shine Petrified (soapstone, concrete, steel) Argenta artist Spring Shine is well known for his beautiful soapstone works. He sources the material from an undisclosed location not too far from his home on the shores of Kootenay Lake, and creates impressive, heartfelt sculptures that bring out the vibrant colours and speckles of the steatite soapstone so well. Two years ago, his eight and a half foot tall eagle titled Soaring was the third most

admired entry as voted by Scupturewalk patrons. Last year he displayed the intimacy and connectivity of family in his mystical piece The Spirit of Family. This year he is adding some additional mediums. Always experimenting, Spring has collaborated with fellow Argenta sculptor and friend Christopher Petersen (also featured in this year’s show) to test material compatibility and expand his range. Working with concrete and soapstone together for its contrast, Petrified is an ambitious undertaking that also speaks from his heart. “Initially, my idea was to have a baby dragon emerging from the open egg,” he says. “However, I realized that leaving it as two distinct pieces was more effective and more in keeping with what I was feeling. Whatever was there is now gone. I realize that this is a reflection of this particular point in life as my first child just left the nest this year.” Petrified is simple but effective in its statement, even if sculpting it was no mean feat. Sitting in a ridged concrete wire nest that measures five feet, three large concrete and soapstone

eggs sit rest at various angles. One has hatched, the top half sits jagged as does its corresponding bottom. Blue inside, tThe eggs shine with the hues of the soapstone – greens, blacks and golds - contrasting with the uniformity of the concrete. Spring has used steel to emulate petrified branches surrounding form and protecting the nest, protecting and its precious contents. It is a measured sculpture that speaks of change but also of the promise of things to come. “Working on this scale and with these materials was challenging but rewarding ,” Spring says. “I’ve always loved working with stone, you feel a compatibility and oneness with it. Concrete is a relatively new medium for me, so incorporating it and finding out how the two work together was interesting. I was glad to have Christopher’s expertise at hand as I worked. He knows the properties of concrete so well. I think the end result works nicely, there is a definite contrast in textures that is apparent.” Spring should be proud of his amalgamation of the various components that make up the whole of Petrified. It is a moving piece that is telling in its message. Like all his sculptures to date, it utilizes his favourite medium: the steatite soapstone that he works so beautifully. Here he expands his mediums. In addition to the physical input there is also his emotional state and philosophical outlook on life displayed in Petrified. It speaks of the ancient past and the immediate present, while future promise and unknowns are suggested within the unhatched eggs. Petrified is another winning sculpture from Spring, earthy and straightforward but conveying much emotional resonance in its conception and execution. www.soapstone-sculpture. com SPONSORED by

Drivers, don’t forget to shoulder check for cyclists. If you’re going to make a turn it’s really important to check the inside lane to make sure that a cyclist is not approaching your blind spot.

We’re not always around a fully stocked garage, auto parts store or tool chest when the need arises to save the day with a big repair. Sometimes, when you have a breakdown you’ve got to go with what falls readily to hand, whether it’s duct tape, J-B Weld or a coat hanger. Here are five stories of some truly epic improvised repairs: Dormitory parking lot trans-

mission repair: Rory Carroll is now the Executive Editor of Autoweek magazine. While at Michigan State University, he was foolish enough to loan his 1991 Volkswagen Golf GTI to a fellow student the day before he was supposed to make the three-hour drive home to Traverse City, Mich. “When he returned the keys to me, he told me that the car had made a loud noise when he’d parked it.” Carroll found the GTI in the dorm parking lot sitting in

a pool of oil; the “friend,” however, was nowhere to be seen. Two chunks of transaxle case were lying in the middle of said pool. Carroll took a bus to a hardware store where he purchased some J-B Weld and, optimistically, four quarts of transaxle oil. He cleaned the pieces of the transaxle case in his dorm room sink, mixed up the J-B Weld and drove the Golf up onto the curb to get at the transaxle. Carroll pushed the metal fragments and

J-B Weld back into place, wedged them in with a piece of wood and waited a few hours before refilling the transaxle with oil and hitting the road — into the jaws of a winter storm as only Northern Michigan can do them. Blown head gasket and cylinder head during a race: The 24 Hours of LeMons is an endurance race for $500 cars. The organizers say that the premise “isn’t just an oxymoron, it’s a breeding ground for morons.”

Damned resourceful morons, anyway — perhaps even the Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison of the improvised repair world. Team Dr. Feelgood’s 1993 Dodge Shadow was participating in “Capitol Offense,” the D.C.-area version of the infamous motorsports affront, when not surprisingly; the Shadow blew a head gasket and disintegrated part of the cylinder head itself. The intrepid racers made a new gasket and slathered J-B Weld on the toasted cylinder head, allowing them to finish the race and win the coveted Judge’s Choice Award without having to resort to a bribe, as is customary for awards in the LeMons world. Leaky radiator addressed by another kind of leak: Tim Suddard is the publisher of Classic Motorsports and Grassroots Motorsports magazines. No stranger to ill-advised road trips in old cars, Suddard (who resides in Florida) was on a crosscountry road trip in a vin-

tage motor home, when it sprang a leak in its radiator while traversing sparsely populated Wyoming. He valiantly dumped every liquid in the motor home into the radiator but still fell short of the nearest town (and bathroom) by a few miles. He killed two birds with one stone, and you can guess how. Fabricated Florida fan belt: Another time, Suddard found himself behind the wheel of a questionable machine, a dilapidated early 1990s vintage E30 BMW 318. Rather than towing the car home, he elected to drive the tired Bimmer the 200 odd miles home. Predictably, something failed (in this case, a fan belt in I-95 Miami rush hour). The ever-resourceful Suddard reached for the only thing that fell readily to hand, a roll of duct tape known to racers affectionately as “200 mph tape.” By twisting a length of it repeatedly, and then fastening the ends, Suddard was able to fashion a temporary fan belt that allowed him to

Three red peppers and a bright red roadster to go, please By Keith Morgan

Judging by the number of people who stop to chat to members of the Driveway team in the supermarket, most of you still rely on newspapers like this one to help narrow down your next-car shortlist. Total strangers often boldly approach us in the veggies’ section to ask what car they should buy next. After a few questions about what their budget is and how they will use the vehicle, we can usually give them five products to consider. I should add,

that lead reviewer Zack Spencer fields most questions in airport lounges across the country! Next to house buying, it’s generally a family’s second largest purchase made so it should be no surprise that people want to seek advice. We learned earlier this year, that polling revealed that our readers will spend a staggering $3.6 billion on new cars in the next year and another $1.69 million on used cars or preowned, if we are to be sensitive to the feelings of those vehicles with a few kilometres on

their clock! It’s true there are so many electronic ways now available to do that basic research but while the internet and social media play an important role in your car selection, auto writers romance you in print over the months leading up to you signing on the dotted line. We bring you news of the latest products and test drive as many of them as we can for you. What has changed dramatically in recent years is the way we present that information. For many years, automotive

sections were a strictly male domain and we thought that all we needed to do was make a few remarks about a subject car’s handling, print some pictures then list its specifications. Pretty boring, really, unless you are a car nut. Now there is solid research that reveals that women play a major role in the purchase decisions made in around 80 percent of car sales. And it’s obvious that most males really do not spend their days trolling automotive websites, as some would have us believe. Some

men will even admit they really don’t know that much

about cars. I know, say it ain’t so. For the aforementioned reasons, we at Driveway try to bring you stories about, or involving cars, that are of a broader interest. Whenever possible, we bring your lifestyle-oriented stories that may involve, travel, fashion and even music that speak to regular folks. Just one example. Who could resist reading recently about Alexandra Straub’s about her drive in an Audi from Munich to Budapest, just to have a home cooked meal with her grandparents.

– Judging by the response, not many! We even included the menu and recipe. In the coming year, we will continue to share such stories with you, to entertain you and inform you. And we want to hear your stories about your road trips, your favourite cars and what you would like to read more about in Driveway. Please don’t hesitate to drop me a line or stop me in the meat section of the supermarket, which is more likely where you will find me. keith.morgan@drivewaybc. ca

Green machine packs more power

By Bob McHugh

Toyota Prius is the most successful hybrid-powered vehicle ever produced and it already had more than a million owners worldwide when a reworked third generation Prius was introduced for the 2010 model year. In addition to even better fuel economy and performance, this Prius is also quieter and a little roomier inside. It can run longer distances in its pure electrical power mode and its four driving modes allow a driver choose a desired level of motive power and fuelefficiency. The gas engine is a larger 1.8-litre capacity Atkinsoncycle four-cylinder that provides more torque and has an exhaust heat recirculation system to reduce heat waste. Warming the engine faster has the added benefit of heating a cold passenger cabin a little quicker. It’s also the first belt-less (less maintenance!) Toyota engine. On the electric side of the

hybrid drive system, the inverter, motor and transaxle shrunk in size making it 20 per cent lighter than the previous system. The 2010 Prius also came with an enhanced regenerative braking system that feeds more electrical charge back to the battery. The official city driven fuel rating for the 2010 Prius was 3.7 L/100km and 4.0 L/100km on the highway and it was the most fuelefficient car sold in Canada. Using the revised (2015) fuel consumption rating method it’s rated at 4.7 L/100km in the city and 4.9 L/100km on the highway. That converts to a still outstanding 58 mpg, in pre-metric (imperial gallon) figures. While it may not look too much different, the front roof pillars of this third generation Prius are further forward and the roof’s highpoint moved towards the rear. Although small, these changes allowed more rear passenger headroom and improved the car’s aerody-

namics. Interesting new options also included a moon roof with solar panels that powered a smart air conditioning system that keeps Prius cool while parked. Intelligent Parking Assist can automatically perform a precision parallel park. And my favourite, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. In addition to speed, you can also set it to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle immediately ahead.

Finding that ‘perfect for you’ used Prius up can be a challenge … but well worth the effort.

Standard safety features include seven airbags, the

seventh being an additional knee airbag for the driver. The front seats also come with “Active” head restraints, which reduce whiplash in a collision. A smaller (short wheelbase) version, called the Prius C, and a (long wheelbase) wagon version, called the Prius V, were both introduced for the 2012 model year. Regular Prius also underwent a modest front facelift (restyled headlights,

grille and front bumper) and got new rear lighting. The 2013 model year brought a plug-in version called the Prius PHV. A larger hybrid battery pack allows Prius PHV to be driven about 20 km in its pure electric mode. Hybrid battery pack failure is a concern for many used Prius buyers. However, the nickel-metal hydride battery in a Prius has proven to be extremely durable. A replacement is covered under

an 8-year/160,000km Toyota warranty and it can last well in excess of ten years. High resale values reflect the high level of consumer confidence that used buyers have in the Toyota Prius. Finding that ‘perfect for you’ used Prius up can be a challenge … but well worth the effort. Price Check: 2010 – 2013 Toyota Prius (September 2014) Year Edition Expect

Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2010 to 2013 Toyota Prius: 2010: An inconsistent brake feeling may be perceived after ABS actuation during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces. Stop-

it with an improved unit. 2010 to 2014: The Intelligent Power Module (IPM), which is part of the hybrid system inverter assembly, could become damaged under certain driving conditions. This could cause various instrument panel warning lights to illuminate and cause a reduction or loss of motive power. Dealers will update motor/generator and hybrid control ECU software and affect repairs as necessary. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

ping distances may be increased compared to expectation for a given pedal force. Dealers will rewrite the programming of the ABS control Unit. 2010: A fatigue crack could develop in the brake pressure accumulator. If this occurs, nitrogen gas could leak into the brake fluid and gradually cause the brake pedal stroke to become longer, resulting in decreased hydraulic pressure. Dealers will inspect the brake booster pump and, if necessary, replace
