Riders return Arnold Lim News staff
It’s sure to be an emotional finale when Reynolds vice-principal Dean Norris-Jones arrives to a high school gym full of avid supporters today. Thirteen days into the Cops for Cancer, Tour de Rock, only hours remain before the 24 riders peddle the final stretch into Centennial Square after travelling more than 1,000 kilometres across Vancouver Island to raise funds for paediatric cancer research. “I really hope that I can hold it together, I doubt that I can,” Norris-Jones said. “I get a little bit choked up thinking about it right now. Clearly, there is a lot of anticipation and I am very, very excited about it. … This journey that I have been on has been so amazing.” Norris-Jones has been a key member of the fundraising machine at Reynolds for the better part of a decade. Last year, the school raised more than $100,000 in their Tour de Rock efforts. The teachers’ strike dampened fundraising efforts this year, but organizers still hope to raise at least

Norris-Jones expects the Reynolds visit, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. today, to be a proud moment, as he greets many students he hasn’t seen since the teachers’ strike began last June. Joining NorrisJones will be RCMP officers in red serge, a marching band and
a thousand people, many of them students, whom have spent countless hours fundraising in the runup to Norris-Jones’ entry not just as a teacher and cancer survivor, but as a rider for the first and only time. Traditionally, the Thursday before tour served as a massive head shave for the school, and the school visits by Tour riders
were Norris-Jones’ two favourite days of the year. Despite having to miss this year’s head shave on Thursday, those feelings have’t changed. “I am just so proud of the Reynolds community and I think that going in there will be my proudest hour. University of Victoria Art History and Visual Studies Prof. Marcus Milwright displays the first page of a two-volume diary, composed of sketches from the First World War. Milwright and others at the university are on a mission to identify the book’s author. UVic Photo Services
First World War sketches a mystery Daniel Palmer News staff
Experts at the University of Victoria are hoping history buffs can help them discover the mystery author of a two-volume leather diary that depicts intimate sketches from the front lines of the First World War. The diary, which was first documented in the university’s archives in the 1970s, includes only the initials “J.M.” and a dedication that reads: “To my daughter Adele.” But it’s only now researchers are reaching out to the public in hopes of discovering its origin. “There’s an image that dates to 1920, so we know J.M. survived the war,” said Marcus Milwright, UVic art history and visual studies professor. Milwright is co-curating the Arts of World War I exhibit opening Nov. 7 at the university’s library, and said he knew there was one item in the Special Collections and University Archives collections he “just had to use. But there’s only
one problem: I have no idea who it actually belonged to.” The diary contains approximately 130 sketches and drawings ranging from caricatures to sombre images of trench art. The varied scenery implies J.M. was likely a soldier, possibly an officer, as one sketch depicts officers reclining in a train where lower ranked soldiers would likely not have had access. “There’s a very detailed sketch in the first volume of an officer’s quarters, called the Little Grey Home in the Wet,” said Lara Wilson, director of UVic Special Collections. Another clue to J.M.’s identity are watercolour paintings of the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery emblems, which are both British Army units. Photo by Repository: UVic Archives & Spec “The images are primar- A sketch from mystery illustrator J.M.’s ily from France and Bel- World War I Sketchbook collection, SC325.
gium, and specifically in the areas of Ypres and Menin,” Wilson said. The images are striking both for their quality and their variety, she said. There are grim, realistic sketches of bodies strewn across fields with burning farmhouses in the background. Other images depict caricatures of senior officers or the everyday happenings of soldiers in the trenches. “I think J.M. is somebody who’s trying to get across different aspects of war,” Milwright said. “There’s what you might expect – images of death and destruction – but he’s also trying to get across some of the humour and absurdity of warfare as well. There are some caricatures that aren’t unkind, but he does reserve his most biting images when it comes to senior figures of authority. I do get the sense he was not particularly

impressed by the people at the top.” Wilson has no record of where the diary came from, only that it was purchased from a private seller. UVic Libraries has been trying for to solve the mystery for years as well, and experts hope the First World War centennial will spark new leads. Milwright’s theory is it was sold by a family member, possibly through an estate sale following the death of J.M.’s daughter. “I think this was an educated person,” Wilson said. “Somebody with some training, who would have had access to these materials.” Arts of World War I runs Nov. 7 to March 3 at the UVic Library exhibition space and is open to the public. The sketches can also be viewed online at bit.ly/1yzCLAv. Anyone with information about the identiy of J.M. or Adele M. or the origin of the diary is asked to contact Milwright at mmilwrig@ uvic.ca. editor@saanichnews.com

Decoding the Sedins University of Victoria duo research Sedin twins’ successful use of ‘servant leadership’ Travis Paterson News staff
Before the Sedin brothers were great with the Vancouver Canucks, they were great in Sweden. But the transition to North America during their rookie NHL season of 2000-2001 and the next few years nearly derailed them. What allowed the brothers to flourish, according to research being conducted by education Prof. Carolyn Crippen and doctoral student David Nagel at the University of Victoria, was Daniel’s and Henrik’s inherent use of the servant leadership philosophy. “They were called soft, they were called sisters, they were called lots of things, but they decided to stay in Vancouver and it was a key moment of their life,” says Crippen, a Victoria resident who had never watched hockey until she stumbled upon the Sedins in 2011. Their bushy red beards of the time stood out, she says. Using traits exhibited by successful servant leaders, the Sedins prevailed as honourable, respectful athletes in a violent and intimidating arena. Crippen and Nagel have captured those traits and their benefits in two international journal articles about servant leadership. “Their decision to stay was a crucial stage in their development,” Crippen says. The research has included site visits to games, practices and interviews with the Sedins at Rogers Arena, as well as with television and print media members Dan Murphy and Ian MacIntyre (who’ve watched the Sedins since Day 1). Crippen and Nagel have also documented countless hours of the brothers’ behaviour on the ice. If it’s game night, Crippen has the TV or radio on while she scribbles constant observations. “I really knew little about hockey before this started,” she said of the research study which has “taken on a life of it’s own.” With the Vancouver Canucks organiza-

That’s in addition to their initial paper in a 2013 edition of the PHEnix Journal and this summer’s update in the International Journal of Servant-Leadership. The Sedins learned their values from a family and community that stressed inclu-
sivity. They speak highly of their elder brothers, who modelled their parents’ values of fairness. “When the Canucks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, the players were upset and the Sedins were the only players who stayed to answer every question from the media,” Crippen says. “They didn’t try to avoid it, they were forthright and honoured their role and responsibility.”
Servant leadership n Servant leadership is a philosophy which focuses on achieving the greater good by serving the needs of followers. The Sedins stand out for their civil, respectful approach to their teammates, coaches, opponents and officials. n Servant leadership develops caring, respectful, inclusive communities.
For Nagel, it’s been a treat to study subjects in the sport he always loved. He can still recall listening to the games on radio while falling asleep as a kid. Now the father of a young family also gives back as a coach with the Victoria Ice Hawks midget house team (15-17). “In a way, (it’s changed the way I think about hockey), but I think aging has had more of an affect,” he says. “Victoria Minor Hockey Association takes a ‘whole person’ developmental approach ... using hockey as a vehicle for supporting growth in individuals.” In that sense, he adds, it coincides with servant leadership. Nagel and Crippen hope the Sedins’ servant-leader attitude can be a beacon for youth today. reporter@saanichnews.com

The B.C. government has added to its pared-down legal aid budget to finance the hiring of a second staff lawyer to handle urgent family law cases, and to expand legal advice by phone for other family disputes around the province. Attorney General Suzanne Anton announced Tuesday the expansion of a pilot program that started with a staff lawyer in Vancouver dedicated to legal aid clients with family law disputes. The second family court “duty counsel” will be based at the Victoria courthouse. The program is funded with an extra $2 million a year for three years, bringing this year’s Legal Services Society budget to $74.5 million. This allows double the time for eligible clients to receive legal advice by phone. Legal Services Society board chair Tom Christensen said the phone service will now offer eligible clients up to six hours with the same lawyer to get advice on issues such as
child support and parenting arrangements so they can represent themselves in family court. “There are always going to be cases where the situation is so dire that we need to appoint a lawyer to assist somebody in court,” Christensen said. “And with family services, that’s generally where violence is threatened, or where somebody faces a serious chance of their interaction with their children being cut off, like when one parent’s going to leave the province with them, and the other parent needs to stop that.” Anton said there are three more pilot projects to come. These are an expanded model for legal aid staff lawyers in criminal cases, a parents’ legal centre for child protection cases and a family mediation referral program. The financing move comes as the Trial Lawyers’ Association of B.C. resumes its intermittent strike against legal aid work to protest the lack of funding. Lawyers are refusing legal aid for the first week of each month

in a protest that began in July. The association notes that 80 per cent of people in family court are not represented by a lawyer, and that the rate paid to legal aid lawyers hasn’t changed since the B.C. government cut the Legal Service Society budget by about 40 per cent between 2001 and 2005. Anton said the overall speed of the court system is improving, and the newly expanded program is designed to settle more cases out of court. “On a family matter in particular, court is not necessarily the final destination, not necessarily the best destination,” Anton said. “This is the emphasis of the new Family Law Act. We would rather parties settled the matter between themselves with the help of a mediator, our family justice mediation services or the Justice Access Centres.” The Trial Lawyers’ Association says only half of the extended provincial sales tax intended fund legal bills in the 1990s is used for that purpose.

There’s a new charity event planting itself into Victoria’s socially active calendar and the community response is strong. The Ride for Refuge cycling event offers distances of 10, 25 and 50 kilometres, launching at 9 a.m. from the Saanich Community Church, 4566 West Saanich Rd. and returning to the same location on Saturday. With more than 260 riders on 44 teams (and more expected this weekend) it’s a solid Victoria debut for the national ride, which is competing against the well-established CIBC Run for the Cure, celebrating its 20th birthday in Victoria on Saturday. “Our goal for the Ride was to raise $40,000 and we’re already over $52,000 (as of Wednesday), so we’re just amazed at the response with 91 volunteers stepping in to help,” said Shelley Morris, CEO
E Y E
of the Cridge Centre for the Family, the host partner and organizer of Ride for Refuge in Victoria. The ride is a different charity event model as it benefits 217 registered charities across Canada. Eight of those are from Victoria, including Cridge, which is on target to hit its own goal of $25,000. Meanwhile at UVic on Saturday, CIBC Run for the Cure organizers expect more than 2,800 to partake in the 5-km run around Ring Road. The inclusive race also offers a 1-km route and is open to strollers, rollerblades and other options. “We’re still growing. Other Run for the Cure locations in Canada have tried chip timing in different locations and we feel it’s not what we’re after. If people want, they can do the 5-km twice,” said Mandy Kandola, the volunteer co-director, who’s been with the event since 2011. “The majority of our runners have been impacted by breast cancer one way or another,” Kandola said.

May’s newest book, which she calls a combination of a memoir and manifesto, was released earlier this month, and the event on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. will be the first time she will publicly read from it. “The event has been sponsored and organized by Tanner’s Books who have done a wonderful job,” May said. “During the event I’ll be doing a few readings from the book and answering questions. I’m really looking forward to it.” May said when she published her latest book, she knew the release had to be in Sidney. “We’re launching in Sidney, of course, because Sidney is book town,” she said. In her latest book, May said she reflects on her extraordinary life to date, providing personal perspectives on her approach to politics, policy and what it means to be Canadian. “The book has a lot of policy and issue content but it comes through the lens of what has shaped my thinking. The book isn’t told through theory, it’s told through how I actually see things day to day,” said May. “Here I am, I’m 60, and I’ve had a really interesting life. Every person I’ve met has helped to shape how I think about things. The book is more about Canada than me, I think, and I hope people find it to be a fun read as well as an empowering one.” Copies of the book can be purchased at the event or reserved ahead of time at Tanner’s Books in Sidney, or online at tannersbooks.com. Admission to the event at the Mary Winspear Centre is $6. For more information on other book reading and signing dates, see elizabethmaymp.ca. editor@saanichnews.com

Save-On-Foods customers drive away in six brand new Toyota RAV 4
T
he excitement was palpable at the six Victoria-area Save-on-Foods stores Saturday morning as hopeful finalists waited for their chance to drive home in a brand new Toyota RAV 4.

Each of the area’s Save-on-Foods stores – Westside Village, Saanich, Tillicum, Fort & Foul Bay, University Heights and Sidney – had whittled numerous entries down to just 10 finalists. Those lucky few arrived at their local store for the 11 a.m. finale, each with a key they hoped would be the one to open the car, says Ted Pigeon, manager of the Westside Village location. Save-on-Foods had run a similar promotion on the Mainland and local managers were keen to try the promotion here in Victoria, with support from partner Jim Pattison Metro Toyota Victoria, Pigeon notes. “It was really neat,” he says, pointing to the excitement that quickly built at his own store as the right key wasn’t discovered until their eighth of 10 contestants. “It’s always good to give back to the community.”

Municipalities get no love Mayors and councillors didn’t get much in the way of joy or love from the provincial government last week during the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual conference. A resolution was passed unanimously by UBCM delegates asking the government to rescind recent B.C. Ferries fare hikes and service cuts. Minutes after the resolution passed, Transportation Minister Todd Stone kiboshed the idea. “That’s not going to happen,” he told a reporter. The UBCM was asking for a rollback in fares to 2013 rates. They were too high then, as well. The motion put forward by UBCM delegates came on the heels of a report suggesting B.C. has missed out on more than $2 billion in economic activity over the past decade because of rising fares. Stone labelled the report “irresponsible” and “unsubstantiated.” When he wasn’t keeping the socialist hordes away from the gates of British Columbia, Premier W.A.C. Bennett essentially created B.C. Ferries in the late 1950s. A strike by employees of the private Black Ball Line was the impetus for Bennett’s plan to create a government-owned ferry service. Bennett saw it as an extension of the highway system. Say that now and watch both federal and provincial politicians run for the hills. Back at the UBCM last week, delegates passed an emergency motion related to the sharing of tax revenue by the province. This is mostly about infrastructure upgrades and the increasing difficulty municipalities have funding projects. The emergency motion was thought to be required because the provincial government has ignored, for 12 months, a report detailing a partnership proposal between the province and municipalities. No word, no love, from the province on this one, either. Premier Christy Clark didn’t bring any either when she addressed the UBCM on Friday. Makes one wonder just how serious the provincial government takes the UBCM. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. A-word question about respect Politicians are often apathetic about consulting the public on issues of governance. They instead rationalize that there is lack of time to consult or that they already know the will of the people. Both are questionable excuses. But on issues of major importance such as sewage megaprojects, amalgamation and taxes, it is essential that politicians consult the community for input on options. Failure to do so demonstrates lack of respect for the voting public. It is this lack of respect that led to the Capital Regional District sewage fiasco that we now face. Failure to adequately consult with the public before CRD planning began, has resulted in a failed Seaterra sewage plan which was based on yesterday’s sewage technology and met none of the community’s needs for today. It did not deal with storm water issues or pharmaceuticals. It wasted excessive amounts of water and had limited energy recovery potential.
It required 18 kilometres of expensive sewage pumping and it would have been extremely costly to maintain. It was an intrusive, centralized, secondary sewage design that the CRD cannot convince any municipality to accept with its siting contest. Now is the time to prevent such debacles occurring again. It is time to elect municipal representatives who have and will continue to consult with the community on important issues, and give the voting public the respect that they deserve. Naval ships scrapped, not mothballed Navy waves farewell to aging ships (News, Sept. 24) The author of the article used the term mothballed twice in regard to four Royal Canadian Navy ships to be decommissioned, two of them with the Pacific fleet at Esquimalt. Mothballed refers to taking a
ship out of service and preserving it for recommissioning or sale in the future. I’m sure the Department of National Defence intends to scrap, not mothball them. The ships are so old they should have been scrapped and replaced decades ago. The two West Coast ships are severely damaged and beyond economical repair as well as being too old to keep longer. The Canadian Red Cross Health Emergency Response Unit (ERU) training has been brought to B.C. for the first time and it’s been set up in Sidney. “Sidney and the Mary Winspear Centre seemed to be ideal place to set this up,” explained Director of Emergencies and Recovery for the Red Cross, Hossam Elsharkawi. “It’s near an airport and has the appropriate facilities, so it made sense.” The Red Cross ERU is a standardized package of both trained personnel and modules of equipment that are ready to be deployed within 24 – 48 hours to areas hit by a catastrophic disaster. It was set up through the week behind the Winspear Centre and simulations will run until the end of day today (Friday), said Elsharkawi. “We have a core team here of doctors, nurses, technicians, administrators, social workers and more,” he explained. “There are 40 people here participating in the training, 10 who have traveled here from other countries like Colombia and Mexico to participate in this.” The simulation is held annually, usually near the Toronto Pearson International Airport, and serves to give hands on disaster training to members of the Red Cross. “It’s the first time we’ve left Ontario,” said Elsharkawi, adding that the reason for coming to B.C. stems from a new agreement between the B.C. government and the Red Cross. The province of B.C. and the Red Cross formalized a partnership in 2012 — the first of its kind in Canada — to help ensure timely and effective deployment of national or international ERUs as temporary resources to assist B.C. in times of a catastrophic disaster. “We have a memorandum of agreement with the provincial government that would see

“Exercises like these help ensure that we are better prepared to collaboratively respond to a catastrophic disaster.” The Canadian Red Cross Society is a non-profit, humanitarian organization, dedicated to helping vulnerable communities in Canada and around the world with a specific focus on disasters and emergencies, and community health and wellness programming. this field hospital and services deploying should there be a major disaster that overwhelms the local emergency reposnse,” Elsharkawi explained. “The aim of the simulation is to increase the level of preparedness. With this type of work theres really no substitute for the hands on training,” he said. The simulation this week centred around a massive earthquake and resulting tsunami scenario. “Mass casualties are simulated, as well as issues with electricity and power, infrastructure engineering and so on,” Elsharkawi said. The memorandum of agreement the Red Cross has with the province of B.C. is a unique one, Elsharkawi continued. “It’s a test case and a great pilot program to have in B.C.,” he said. “Other provinces are definitely watching closely.” “Emergencies are unpredictable and can threaten public safety as well as public health by constricting access to vital health services or limiting the ability to get people the immediate care they need,” said Minister of Health Terry Lake.

“We really wanted to make sure that people had a warm, dry place to be,” said McKenzie. The goal is to be able to raise enough funds to be able to continue the extended hours into the summer. “We’re quite optimistic that the community will come forward,” said McKenzie. The extended hours adds an extra $1 million to Our Place’s annual budget. Extra hours also increases Our Place’s need for volunteers. The new winter hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and statutory holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The true muscle car enthusiast will be attracted to the 435hp 5.0L V8. Power goes through either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The big change to the chassis is the introduction of an independent rear suspension and modified front suspension, plus bigger brakes. Carving through the canyons outside of L.A. was a treat, the platform is very forgiving and there is no longer any unstable mid-corner surprises found in the older cars, just a very sure-footed modern car. Verdict 50 years is a long time to continually produce a single car model. What comes out of this is a cumulative result that is
hard to beat. The engineers have done a great job of bringing the suspension into the modern world and the new EcoBoost engine will be very popular, once people try it. The old-school buyers will be attracted to the meaty V8 but often, sensible decisions prevail and the EcoBoost is a solid experience. The styling is stunning, inside and out. To be blunt, this car will be a homerun for Ford. There are two things I’d like to see improved. The seat back has no electric actuation, which means getting the right spot is hard to achieve. The second is the suspension in the GT can be a bit bouncy over city conditions but settles right down at highway speeds – pretty minor stuff for an all-new car. SPECIAL
ROAD - READY OIL CHANGE PACKAGE
Ford’s not so new all new van By Ian Harwood
Driving down the road you see quite a variety of work vehicles, cube vans, flat decks, service trucks and pickups to name but a few. The days of the traditional van have gone except for a few that have seen more than a little action in their lives! Consumers looking for a work van now want more headroom in the back to carry out products to the job site or perhaps use as a portable office or shop. Enter the European vans. The Sprinter van is a classic example. It started with just a few driving our streets and now it’s the template for what other vans to aspire to be. The 2015 Ford Transit is new to us but has been around for many years in Europe; a big success there and it will likely prove to be a huge success here.

In the cab I found plenty of room and could see myself working in this all day, jumping out to make deliveries and working very comfortably. The Transit Van is available in three body lengths, 320 cm (126”), 363 cm (143.7”), 436 cm (172.2”), and three roof heights 211 (83.2”), 255 cm (100.7”), and 279 cm (110”). There is an available Crew Chief option that helps you track your fleet. A GPS enabled black box is mounted in the vehicle and records detail information such as location, speed, and fuel economy. It can also tell if the driver seat belt is in use.

Then it was on to the slalom course, where we were timed driving a bright yellow Porsche Cayman around a snakelike course. Up second, I tooled around the now sun-dried course in about 31 seconds. Not bad, I thought. But as this group of enthusiasts gained knowledge from those who went before them, the times dropped steadily. Red Barn Market co-owner Ashley Bourque, looking at home in the Porsche, made it around in a field-best 26 seconds and change, but dumped a cone for a threesecond penalty. In the end, the final driver – my partner John – ran a clean run in just over 27 seconds to take the unofficial title. To wind up this amazing day where the smiles spanned as wide as the homestretch, teams picked their cars for two 18-lap circuits around the speedway road course. I chose the only manual transmission car in the field, a Volkswagen Golf GTI turbo. The VW proved nimble and fun to drive, if a bit underpowered compared to the rest of these sports cars. Someone wanted to try out the five-speed for the second goround, so John and I jumped into a Mercedes C-class coupe to growl around the rest of the way. It gave me a little more awareness of the capability of these cars and what you can do without losing control.” Pedersen said having a controlled facility that allows drivers to exercise some of the capabilities of the cars makes it a fun and educational day. “The advanced traction control system, stability control system and ABS programs, most of us don’t use those on a daily basis. Vancouver’s Daniel Chu (2012) is one of B.C’s top players (ATP ranking of 1,261), a previous qualifier who competed in the South Island Indoor Tennis Challenge at Cedar Hill Rec. Centre.
The $20,000 challenge South Island Indoor Tennis Challenge Travis Paterson News staff
The sponsors are in place, the schedule is set. Everything for the South Island Indoor Tennis Challnege, Oct. 16 to 19, is ready – except for the players. “Now we sit and wait. They’ll literally sign up within the final hour of deadline (Oct. 8),” says Dean Gillis, who’s grown the tourney from a $5,000 in 2010 to this year’s $20,000 pot. The eight player tourney reserves six spots for Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranked players (usually between 100 and 200). About a dozen invitees are vetted by Gillis, who then take a gamble on the first-come-first-serve online registration for the six spots. “I can actually watch them sign up in our computer program at 6:59 for a 7 p.m. deadline,” Gillis laughs. The Cedar Hill tennis pro intentionally timed the Indoor Challenge to fall after a series of ATP challenger tournaments in California, stopping in Napa (Sept. 20 to 28), Tiburon (Oct. 4 to 12) and Sacramento (Sept. 27 to Oct. 5). “Ours is known as a money tournament, meaning we’re not sanctioned by the ATP,” Gillis said. “We’ll attract
players from those tourneys. A lot of them have talked to me, they just like to wait until the last minute to make sure they’re healthy.” There are a lot of money tournaments across North America, as they play an important role for players ranked in the 100 to 200 range. Gillis sees tourney his growing to a $50,000 pot in the coming years to attract bigger names, even if they’re not as recognizable “Those players need money tournaments to earn the $40,000 annual income needed to fly around and enter ATP tournaments. It’s a cyclical process.” Even though ATP tournaments often boast a $50,000 or $100,000 prize total, the Indoor Challenge allocates the majority of its money to the winners, $6,000 to the winnner and $4,000 to the finalist, which is in line with a $40,000 ATP tournament. “A lot of these players have been playing in the qualifying brackets for the Grand Slams,” Gillis said. “Last year’s winner (Rik de Voest) was ranked 120th. We’ll never get the big names, but if you take, for example, there’s more than 600 players in the NHL, and even more in baseball, we’re getting players at the 100 level.” De Voest, 33, has retired and is unlikely to compete, though Philip Bester may return. Qualifying for the pair of local spots begins Oct. 14.

Book exchanges pop up in neighbourhood A number of free book exchanges are popping up around Cadboro Bay Village and Ten Mile Point as of late. After the Caddy Bay book exchange was established at the corner of Tudor Road and Telegraph Bay Road, the Baynes book exchange is now operating at the corner of Baynes and Smuggler’s Cove at Cadboro Point.
The outdoor book exchange uses the honour system, where residents are encouraged to take or leave a book for neighbours. “It’s the residents who has established this, and it’s absolutely wonderful that people are doing this,” said Eric Dahli, Cadboro Bay Residents Association chair.
Dahli said a similar book exchange has been operating at Goward House for years, but outdoor exchanges help build community and allow residents to avoid driving for the simple pleasure of picking up a good read. It is still Jumpship, only without the ship. Audiences looking for professional free ride mountain bikers, impressive trick jumps, huge air and even a chance to try it themselves have a new place to check out the sport, only this time the event takes place on a mountain instead of a ship. “I couldn’t be more excited. It’s something maybe we dreamed of,” said Dockside Mountain Biking Society board member Rob Fawcett, whose organization hosts Jumpship 2014 this Friday through Sunday (Oct. 3 to 5) at Bear Mountain Golf Resort. “To be able to host the event downtown was really cool, but of course it really didn’t represent mountain biking. To be able to host the event at Bear Mountain, now it really represents mountain biking which is pretty exciting.” The challenges of building and tearing down the entire bike course in a matter of days, not to mention other logistical demands related to being on the Inner Harbour, forced organizers to reconsider their venue. However, he looks forward to seeing 20 of the top riders from across North America –
“It’s like flying … Once you try it, you get such a great adrenaline rush you get addicted to it. It’s such a euphoric feeling. It is scary, but that’s why you want to do it, you get that adrenaline pumping.” - Peter Savage and possibly Europe – take to the skies over the West Shore. “It’s one of the most unique courses out there, because as far as I know, there is no mountain bike free ride competition held on a golf course. It is one of a kind,” said Peter Savage, who is competing this weekend. The lifelong Oak Bay resident is helping build the course. He knows the ups and downs of freeriding all too well, bearing a long scar across one shoulder, the result of a broken collarbone suffered in a crash. “It’s cool to see events like this bring the mountain biking community together... it shows the city that lots of people want more places to ride more events like this,” Savage said. Fawcett, helping organize his third Jumpship, said the venue change has been a positive one and offers an excellent opportunity to watch an up-and-coming sport evolve on the West Shore. The event will feature a beer garden, vendors, live music, a kids’ play area and a jump where amateur riders can leap onto a giant air bag. While he doesn’t expect to draw as many spectators as it did downtown (40,000), Fawcett looks forward a positive response. “We’re going to have world-class riders and a world-class course.” alim@goldstreamgazette.com
