the support would be as huge as it is,” said Koropatnisk, a seven-year veteran of the VicPD. “It is absolutely fantastic rolling into a small town like Ladysmith and (the event) is full. They are very generous people. We had that right from the start in Port Alice and it is beautiful.” Koropatniski and 23 other riders left Port Alice on Sept. 20 for a 1,000-kilometre trek down Vancouver Island, fundraising for pediatric cancer. And as he has pedaled from town to town, school to school, there is one spot that he know will hold special significance: his kids’ school.

It is going to be an emotional finale. Thirteen days into the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, only hours remain before Victoria police officer Ryan Koropatniski cycles his way into the Capital. Despite plenty of preparation from fellow Victoria Police Department tour riders, what he thought he knew has paled in the face of the actual experience. And the finale has yet to come. “In my head I knew we would be going from community to community, but I didn’t know

It’s going to be more emotion there just seeing everyone together and all rallying for this cause, I have no idea how I am going to react.” Besides Koropatniski, other Victoria riders on the Tour de Rock team include Detective Const. Shutterbug obsession Cedar Hill art show highlights last 70 years of photographers’ work Travis Paterson News staff
In its seven decades, the Victoria Camera Club has seen changes its members never would have never imagined. But as the shutterbugs prepare for the club’s anniversary show, On Reflection, at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre next week, the shift to digital photography is just one of the many milestones that makes up a rich visual catalogue of images. “Nature photography is still our strongest category, though the creative category is next,” says vice president Richard James, referencing the club’s monthly photo competitions held at Norway House on Hillside Avenue.
“There’s interest in the lost art of the dark room.” - Richard James, Victoria Camera Club Case in point, James has entered his own photo of a majestic bison displacing water as it tromps through the Yellowstone River. Digital photography has led to a more accessible world for would-be photographers and opened the door to new photography categories, especially in the creative realm where raw photos are built, layer by layer, into illustrated art. James, who was initially a member between 1980 and 1985, rejoined the camera club in 2005 after it accepted digitalization as a legitimate form of photography. “Myself and many others had already

And there’s at least a couple of deep freezers full of slides around town.” The VCC includes members from all walks of life, such as Ted Grant, the internationally renowned Canadian photojournalist and photographer. Grant is writing a foreword for the club’s soon-to-be-published book commemorating its 70-year life. But it also takes the work of volunteers such as current president Lloyd Houghton, who relocated to the Island from New Zea-
land in 2012. “Couldn’t resist the offer,” jokes Houghton. “Coming from out of town, it was actually one of the first things I did before I came here, to look up the club and be around likeminded people as soon as I arrived.” The lifetime photographer started with a Practica 1000 as a teenager. “This club has a great history and it’s been well respected. When you look back over time you see the technology change in a way we never would have dreamed,” Houghton said. Kevin Laird News staff
CFB Esquimalt personnel kicked off the base’s annual United Way of Greater Victoria fundraising campaign Tuesday. The event featured a lunch time barbecue with senior personnel volunteering to take a dunktank plunge in the name of charity. Rear-Admiral Bill Truelove announced the Maritime Forces Pacific campaign goal $650,000.
“I am looking forward to another successful campaign and encourage the entire defence team to become actively involved in this worthy cause,” Truelove said. CFB Esquimalt with its 6,000 personnel is the largest corporate contributor to the United Way of Greater Victoria’s campaign. The 2014 campaign raised more than $600,000, or 10 per cent of the total raised in the Greater Victoria region. “DND is a huge supporter of the community

Program gets rare boost in funding for family law Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. government has added to its pareddown legal aid budget to finance the hiring of a second staff lawyer to handle urgent family law cases, and to expand legal advice by phone for other family disputes around the province. Attorney General Suzanne Anton announced Tuesday the expansion of a pilot program that started with a staff lawyer in Vancouver dedicated to legal aid clients with family law disputes. The second lawyer will be based at the Victoria courthouse, and Anton said there are three more announcements
to come for other parts of the province. The program is funded with an extra $2 million a year for three years, bringing this year’s Legal Services Society budget to $74.5 million. This allows double the time for eligible clients to receive legal advice by phone. Legal Services Society board chair Tom Christensen said the phone service will now be able to offer eligible clients up to six hours with the same lawyer, to get advice on issues such as child support and parenting arrangements so they can represent themselves in family court. “There are always going to be cases where

work to protest the lack of funding. Lawyers are refusing legal aid for the first week of each month in a protest that began in July. The association notes that 80 per cent of people in family court are not represented by a lawyer, and that the rate
paid to legal aid lawyers hasn’t changed since the B.C. government cut the Legal Service Society budget by about 40 per cent between 2001 and 2005. Anton said the overall speed of the court system is improving, and the newly expanded program is designed to settle more cases out of court. “On a family matter in particular, court is not necessarily the final destination, not necessarily the best destination,” Anton said. “This is the emphasis of the new Family Law Act. We would rather parties settled the matter between themselves with the help of a mediator, with the help of our family justice mediation services, with the help of the Justice Access Centres.”

Municipalities get no love Mayors and councillors didn’t get much in the way of joy or love from the provincial government last week during the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual conference. A resolution was passed unanimously by UBCM delegates asking the government to rescind recent B.C. Ferries fare hikes and service cuts. Minutes after the resolution passed, Transportation Minister Todd Stone kiboshed the idea. “That’s not going to happen,” he told a reporter. The UBCM was asking for a rollback in fares to 2013 rates. They were too high then, as well. The motion put forward by UBCM delegates came on the heels of a report suggesting B.C. has missed out on more than $2 billion in economic activity over the past decade because of rising fares. Stone labelled the report “irresponsible” and “unsubstantiated.” When he wasn’t keeping the socialist hordes away from the gates of British Columbia, Premier W.A.C. Bennett essentially created B.C. Ferries in the late 1950s. A strike by employees of the private Black Ball Line was the impetus for Bennett’s plan to create a government-owned ferry service. Bennett saw it as an extension of the highway system. Say that now and watch both federal and provincial politicians run for the hills. Back at the UBCM last week, delegates passed an emergency motion related to the sharing of tax revenue by the province. This is mostly about infrastructure upgrades and the increasing difficulty municipalities have funding projects. The emergency motion was thought to be required because the provincial government has ignored, for 12 months, a report detailing a partnership proposal between the province and municipalities. No word, no love, from the province on this one, either. Premier Christy Clark didn’t bring any either when she addressed the UBCM on Friday. Makes one wonder just how serious the provincial government takes the UBCM. What do you think? Give us your comments by email: editor@vicnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. All letters must have a name and a telephone number for verification. The News is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Ships must sail to scrapyard Navy waves farewell to aging ships (News, Sept. 24) The author of the article used the term mothballed twice in regard to four Royal Canadian Navy ships to be decommissioned, two of them with the Pacific fleet at Esquimalt. Mothballed refers to taking a ship out of service and preserving it for recommissioning or sale in the future. I’m sure the Department of National Defence intends to scrap, not mothball them. The ships are so old they should have been scrapped and replaced decades ago. The two West Coast ships are severely damaged and beyond economical repair as well as being too old to keep longer. Public deserves to be consulted Politicians are often apathetic about consulting the public on issues of governance. They instead rationalize that there is lack of time to consult or that they already know the will of the people. Both are questionable excuses. But on issues of major importance such as sewage megaprojects, amalgamation and taxes, it is essential that politicians consult the community for input on options. Failure to do so
demonstrates lack of respect for the voting public. It is this lack of respect that led to the Capital Regional District sewage fiasco that we now face. Failure to adequately consult with the public before CRD planning began, has resulted in a failed Seaterra sewage plan which was based on yesterday’s sewage technology and met none of the community’s needs for today. It did not deal with storm water issues or pharmaceuticals. It wasted excessive amounts of water and had limited energy recovery potential. It required 18 kilometres of expensive sewage pumping and it would have been extremely costly to maintain. It was an intrusive, centralized, secondary sewage design that the CRD cannot convince any municipality to accept with its siting contest. Now is the time to prevent such debacles occurring again. It is time to elect municipal representatives who have and will continue to consult with the community on important issues, and give the voting public the respect that they deserve. Letter writers throw barbs at mayoral candidates I find it hard to believe that Mayor Fortin has the support of
the business community. In the past six years the vacancy rate in Victoria Downtown has increased and I sense that business people are looking for opportunities elsewhere. Maybe Fortin means that he has the support of business people in Shanghai where he created jobs making defective components for the Johnson Street bridge. T. W. Morley Victoria ••• Mayoral candidate Ida Chong is hoping that Victorians will forget the saga she was involved in with regard to her expense claims as an MLA in 2010. The Oak Bay constituents did not forget last year when they decided to vote for the Green Party rather than for the NDP when everyone knows that Oak Bay is staunch Liberal. . Tony Mathews. Victoria

Our Place expands winter hours News staff
After seven years of providing services and a place to go for Victoria’s homeless community as well as the working poor and mentally and physically challenged people, Our Place Society is finally able to extend its hours from 55 hours to 92 hours per week for the winter season. “For the first five years it was all about getting the place up and running and bringing in enough donations,” said Grant McKenzie, director of communications at Our Place. “In the last two years, Don Evans (executive director of Our Place) put in place the right team that has been able to raise awareness
Grant McKenzie and raise funds.” The extended hours are a pilot project for the winter from Oct. 1 to the end of March.
OPTOMETRIST ON SITE!
“We really wanted to make sure that people had a warm, dry place to be,” said McKenzie. The goal is to be able to raise enough funds to be able to continue the extended hours into the summer. “We’re quite optimistic that the community will come forward,” said McKenzie. The extended hours adds an extra $1 million to Our Place’s annual budget. Extra hours also increases Our Place’s need for volunteers. The new winter hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and statutory holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Save-On-Foods customers drive away in six brand new Toyota RAV 4
T
he excitement was palpable at the six Victoria-area Save-on-Foods stores Saturday morning as hopeful finalists waited for their chance to drive home in a brand new Toyota RAV 4.

Each of the area’s Save-on-Foods stores – Westside Village, Saanich, Tillicum, Fort & Foul Bay, University Heights and Sidney – had whittled numerous entries down to just 10 finalists. Those lucky few arrived at their local store for the 11 a.m. finale, each with a key they hoped would be the one to open the car, says Ted Pigeon, manager of the Westside Village location. Save-on-Foods had run a similar promotion on the Mainland and local managers were keen to try the promotion here in Victoria, with support from partner Jim Pattison Metro Toyota Victoria, Pigeon notes. “It was really neat,” he says, pointing to the excitement that quickly built at his own store as the right key wasn’t discovered until their eighth of 10 contestants. “It’s always good to give back to the community.”

Rower treats fundraiser to an inspirational start Travis Paterson News staff
Olympic rower Darcy Marquardt didn’t bring down the house with her speech, but she came close, delivering one of the best keynote speeches in seven years of the Vikes Championship Breakfast at the University of Victoria McKinnon Gym on Tuesday. A total of 1,400 seats were sold for the event and raised $475,000, bringing the total raised since 2008 to more than $2.8 million. Marquardt spun a simple but effective tale, taking breakfasters to the moment she first decided to try rowing (because her friend in the Emily Carr residence had written it on her calendar), to what went through
her mind in the longest five minutes of her life, waiting for the start at the 2012 London Olympics. “Once I made it onto the Vikes’ eight, I remember training and the Olympic team started behind us, so I was able to watch them as they eventually zoomed right past us. I was walking shoulder to shoulder at the rowing club with Olympians, and I didn’t even realize it, I thought, ‘they look just like me.’” It was 10 years from the time Marquardt first competed for the Vikes to the 2012 Olympics, where she was part of the women’s eight that won silver. Back then there was far less student-athletic scholarships. Testament to that is the fact Marquardt worked for most of
her Vikes career as a lifeguard at Saanich Commonwealth Place. “For seven years now this event has supported studentathlete scholarships, which we know are a crucial determinant for prospective student-athletes in choosing their post-secondary institutions,” said Clint Hamilton, director of athletics and recreation. UVic matched the first $150,000 of profit raised from 2008 to 2012, and $200,000 in each of the last two years. Marquardt joins the list of UVic Championship Breakfast keynote speakers: Chris Hebb (2008), Bob Lenarduzzi (2009), Stephanie Dixon (2010), Adam Kreek (2011), Pierre Lafontaine (2012) and Dr. Paul E. Zehr (2013).

mid-range torque making the Mustang accelerate easily and it passes well on the highway. There isn’t the classic V8 rumble but this compromise is easy to take, knowing that this model has plenty of power for the average daily commuter. The true muscle car enthusiast will be attracted to the 435hp 5.0L V8. Power goes through either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The big change to the chassis is the introduction of an independent rear suspension and modified front suspension, plus bigger brakes. Carving through the canyons outside of L.A. was a treat, the platform is very forgiving and there is no longer any unstable mid-corner surprises found in the older cars, just a very sure-footed modern car. Verdict 50 years is a long time to continually produce a single car model. What comes out of this is a cumulative result that is
hard to beat. The engineers have done a great job of bringing the suspension into the modern world and the new EcoBoost engine will be very popular, once people try it. The old-school buyers will be attracted to the meaty V8 but often, sensible decisions prevail and the EcoBoost is a solid experience. The styling is stunning, inside and out. To be blunt, this car will be a homerun for Ford. There are two things I’d like to see improved. The seat back has no electric actuation, which means getting the right spot is hard to achieve. The second is the suspension in the GT can be a bit bouncy over city conditions but settles right down at highway speeds – pretty minor stuff for an all-new car. SPECIAL
ROAD - READY OIL CHANGE PACKAGE
Ford’s not so new all new van By Ian Harwood
Driving down the road you see quite a variety of work vehicles, cube vans, flat decks, service trucks and pickups to name but a few. The days of the traditional van have gone except for a few that have seen more than a little action in their lives! Consumers looking for a work van now want more headroom in the back to carry out products to the job site or perhaps use as a portable office or shop. Enter the European vans. The Sprinter van is a classic example. It started with just a few driving our streets and now it’s the template for what other vans to aspire to be. The 2015 Ford Transit is new to us but has been around for many years in Europe; a big success there and it will likely prove to be a huge success here.

Performance driving not just for professionals

around some downed cones without braking, until we straightened the wheels again, that was. Then it was on to the slalom course, where we were timed driving a bright yellow Porsche Cayman around a snakelike course. Up second, I tooled around the now sun-dried course in about 31 seconds. Not bad, I thought. But as this group of enthusiasts gained knowledge from those who went before them, the times dropped steadily. Red Barn Market co-owner Ashley Bourque, looking at home in the Porsche, made it around in a field-best 26 seconds and change, but dumped a cone for a threesecond penalty. In the end, the final driver – my partner John – ran a clean run in just over 27 seconds to take the unofficial title. To wind up this amazing day where the smiles spanned as wide as the homestretch, teams picked their cars for two 18-lap circuits around the speedway road course. I chose the only manual transmission car in the field, a Volkswagen Golf GTI turbo. The VW proved nimble and fun to drive, if a bit underpowered compared to the rest of these sports cars. Someone wanted to try out the five-speed for the second goround, so John and I jumped into a Mercedes C-class coupe to growl around the rest of the way. Afterward, John summed up his experience: “I was a little nervous

It gave me a little more awareness of the capability of these cars and what you can do without losing control.” Pedersen said having a controlled facility that allows drivers to exercise some of the capabilities of the cars makes it a fun and educational day. “The advanced traction control system, stability control system and ABS programs, most of us don’t use those on a daily basis. This gives us an opportunity to feel those. We can talk about them

all day long in the showroom, but it’s a different experience when you get to actually push them and activate some of these things.” Hildebrandt enjoys seeing people’s reactions when they realize what they can do when they get behind the wheel of a high-performance automobile. “For us it’s really a pleasure to do this driving event and to see at the end everybody leaving with big smiles,” he said, “and asking ‘What’s the next event? Can we do this again?’” GAIN is working on obtaining its own track to run its driving programs. Is CUPE running your city hall?
Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
The big story at this year’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention was a report commissioned by the B.C. government that reveals municipal pay increases for unionized staff have been running at twice the rate of provincial raises. When I asked Premier Christy Clark about the intent of this report, leaked just before the annual UBCM convention, she was blunt. It’s to get this issue onto the agenda for the November municipal elections, which the province has decreed shall be for four-year terms instead of three. After local elections, discussions with surviving and incoming municipal politicians will resume. Things have been going pretty well for the main municipal union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, for the last couple of decades. As local election turnout has gone from bad to worse, municipal employees themselves have become an increasingly dominant voting bloc. Then there are the “labour councils” in urban centres, now almost entirely fronts for public sector unions. They quietly survey council candidates to determine their level of affection for ever-growing public payrolls, and
audit function on whether taxpayers are getting value for money. To that extent I suppose a municipal auditor might be able to comment on the advantages of coordinating efforts.” NDP leader John Horgan’s attack on the compensation report was as predictable as it was selective. In his speech to delegates, Horgan called it “onesided, politically motivated, shoddy work” designed to embarrass local politicians on the eve of their elections. Did he question Ernst and Young’s numbers, the pay increases for municipal union staff of 38 per cent between 2001 and 2012, compared to 19 per cent for unionized provincial staff? Did he question
a tight-fisted centralized bargaining agency, such as the government set up last year to wrestle the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to the ground? “We haven’t formulated our answer,” de Jong said. “What the data does suggest, however, is that there may well be some merit [to centralized bargaining]. One of the recommendations points to a more coordinated approach to some of the negotiations that take place.” Will the new municipal auditor general have a role in this? “The purpose of the auditor was not to become an enforcement mechanism,” de Jong said. “It was to play a traditional
their calculation that over that period, inflation totalled 23 per cent? No. The facts being against him, he went with an emotional pitch to distract from them. Recall that during the final days of the teachers’ strike, Horgan suddenly decided that what was really needed was binding arbitration. This was 24 hours after the teachers’ union took that position.
So there’s the big question to be considered by voters as local elections draw near. Which candidates are looking out for your interests, and which ones are working on behalf of CUPE? There’s another troubling trend in manipulation of local government that was more evident than ever at the 2014 UBCM convention. I’ll discuss that in a future column.

dole out campaign funds accordingly. Sometimes they organize full slates, with cuddly names like “Protect Coquitlam” to appeal to lowinformation voters. During last week’s convention in Whistler, I caught up to Finance Minister Mike de Jong in a brief break from the dozens of meetings cabinet ministers have with mayors, councillors and regional directors. Is the province going to impose some kind of solution? “There’s not some hidden legislative agenda,” de Jong replied. More data needs to be gathered, and the report shows ongoing problems with management salaries at the provincial level as well. Is this the first step to imposing

Authors line up for book prizes Andrea Peacock News staff
Winners of the 2014 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize and the Bolen Books Children’s Books Prize will be announced at a literary gala this month. Authors and illustrators from the Capital Regional District whose books were published between April 1, 2013

Walking with elephants Andrea Peacock News staff
The moment Dag Goering came face to face with an elephant while working as a veterinarian in India in 2007, he knew he had to do whatever he could to protect these great creatures. Goering and his wife Maria Coffey are the co-founders of Elephant Earth Initiative, a non-profit organization that funds an antielephant poaching program in Kenya, along with other initiatives that benefit elephants and the humans they interact with. Goering and Coffey plan to share their passion for elephants with the public through an art exhibit opening on Saturday (Oct. 4). “I really want to bring across the magnificence of these amazing animals,” said Goering. “It’s a very positive and upbeat exhibit, but I’m also drawing awareness to some of the issues between elephants and humans.” The exhibit features photographs taken by Goering, as well as collages, artifacts and information about elephants. It will be an opportunity for people to learn all about elephants and the issues surrounding them. There will also be petitions against the illegal poaching of elephants available to sign. “If elephants are slaughtered at this rate, they’ll be extinct Gorge

WATER MAIN FLUSHING Each year, Victoria’s water mains are “flushed” to remove sediment and maintain high quality drinking water. Between October 6 and November 28, 2014 water main flushing will occur Downtown, in James Bay, near Mayfair and along the Gorge. During the flushing, some water discolouration can be expected, along with short periods of low water pressure. To prevent any staining, run cold tap until water is clear. Commercial establishments such as laundromats, beauty salons, hotels and restaurants can contact Public Works at 250.361.0400 for further details and advance warning of flushing dates. Visit www.victoria.ca for a detailed map.

A FEW QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN BUYING A HOUSE Before you make an offer on a house, it pays to ask a handful of questions. While the answers might scare you off or make you rethink your bid, they could make you feel more confident that you’re making the right move on the right house. 1. What is the property worth in today’s market? 2. How flexible is the seller on the asking price? 3. What’s wrong with this house? 4. Is this house in a flood plain? 5. Will the lender allow a short sale? 6. Are there any foreclosures for sale in the area? 7. Do you have the paperwork for the mechanical systems? 8. How long has the property been on the market? 9. Has the property repeatedly changed hands? 10. What is the minimum price the seller will accept?

Creating a livable neighbourhood Esquimalt works towards creating a ‘village concept’ in its core Andrea Peacock News Staff
Neighbourhoods are more than a cluster of houses or businesses. A carefully planned neighbourhood can define a town and the way people live their lives. The Township of Esquimalt hopes to change the lives of its residents by bringing life into its downtown with the Esquimalt Village Plan. “It’ll be the initiative to trigger a domino effect of redevelopment,” said Bill Brown, director of development services in Esquimalt. “When the local government invests in a project of this caliber, that’s an enormous signal of confidence in the community and the economy.” Brown said the village will be a hub of activity for Esquimalt with a mix of both businesses and residential units. Creating an effective neighbourhood that meets a multitude of needs requires a lot of coordination and planning, but the benefits will be boundless for many people. “It will kind of be Esquimalt’s living room for its residents to come, enjoy coffee and meet and talk about ideas,” said Brown. “It’ll add vibrancy and energy and the enjoyment of eating and being together.” Brown said the purpose of creating a centre of activity such as the village is to get the heart of the town pumping. “We’re very lucky that we have this big open space that’s ready for redevelopment.” Having a neighbourhood such as this in Esquimalt will help to change people’s perception of the town, said Brown. Brown is hoping the village plan will increase the sense of commu-

nity in the downtown core. In addition, he believes such a plan is unique to Greater Victoria, and will therefore cause people to notice Esquimalt and see it in a new way. “Esquimalt has traditionally had a bad image, but I think it’s changing, absolutely. People are beginning to realize Esquimalt’s a pretty nice place,” he said. Rather than being somewhere people pass through on their way to and from work, the village is meant
to create the opportunity for people to create their base in Esquimalt. It will serve as a place where people can live and work. “There’s lots of people that drive by, but I think we’d like those people to … actually live in Esquimalt and walk to work” said Brown. “We’re trying to offer the people of Greater Victoria an alternate way of living.” With a plan for stores, restaurants, banks and a large courtyard, the village is expected to be buzzing
with activity once completed. “You can walk to work, you can walk to all the amenities, and your local shopping is here and there’s transit,” said Brown. “I think it’s part of a trend, people living close to their work, living in higher densities.” The development of the Esquimalt Village project is crucial to getting Esquimalt’s downtown core revitalized,” said Brown. andrea.peacock@vicnews.com

The Franklin Expedition: Why does it matter? The excitement of the Franklin saga may make us feel more emotionally engaged with our northern territories
Sir John Franklin set out on his voyage from England in 1845 with one objective: to find the elusive Northwest Passage, which would provide a faster route for ships travelling from Europe to the rich trading grounds of Asia. The voyage around Cape Horn was too long and very dangerous, so England, which by 1845 was the dominant European maritime military and merchant power, The recent discovery of the resting sought a quicker, easier route through the place of one of the two ships involved in as-yet largely unmapped Arctic territories the doomed Franklin Expedition of 1845 that would become part of has garnered a huge amount of Canada. media attention and a great deal North America was not the of excitement from historians, only territory being explored by explorers, politicians and the England at this time. John and Jane Franklin: when no word had come from the expedition in three years, Jane. Franklin began to lobby for rescue efforts. The reawakening of interest in Franklin and his expedition provides a window through which Canadians might examine their contemporary relationship with the Arctic. companies, which would not only allow their propellers to maneuver the ships in tight situations, but also pumped hot water through pipes onboard the ship to keep the crew warm. There was a library onboard, and vast arrays of tinned food. If anyone could have survived this voyage, it should have been Franklin. The hubris of the mid-19th century was fueled by rapid advances in industrial technology. The media covered the story by portraying Franklin as a noble hero – a man dissuaded by nothing, who had every confidence that his cutting-edge ships would survive, and he would return home to England with a map of the Northwest Passage. Instead, Canadian weather prevailed. The sea ice was too thick. The boats were immobilized. The crew began to die. None of their technology could save them; indeed there is even a theory that the lead used in soldering the food tins actually hastened the men’s deaths. Inuit stories spoke of ghostly white men labouring in the cold, and of cannibalism amongst survivors. In 1859, a note dating from 1848 was found on King William Island which stated that Franklin was dead, and that the survivors had abandoned the ships and set off south on foot in a desperate attempt to survive. In 1981, three corpses of Franklin’s men were found on Beechey Island, half starved, and displaying lead poisoning. Other remains were later found on King William Island which showed signs of cutmarks on the bones. The Inuit tales of cannibalism seem to have been true. At home in England, when no word had come from the expedition in three years, Mrs. Franklin began to lobby for rescue efforts. The British Admiralty offered a reward of £20,000 (the equivalent of more than $2 million today) for anyone that found Franklin’s missing ships and crew. The loss was a stark reminder of the limitations of human ingenuity and technology when faced with the implacability of nature. Approximately 50 expeditions since
had tried and failed to determine with certainty the fate of those men. Mrs. Franklin became a national heroine in her own right; a valiant, persistent woman who refused to give up hope and for whom popular ballads were composed. Today, the discovery of the Terror is as remarkable as if 170 years from now we were to suddenly find the remains of flight MH370. The drama and tragedy of the Franklin story is once again in the public eye, but the discovery also casts light on some modern concerns. Pragmatically, the issue of Canada’s Arctic sovereignty is tied up in the expedition and though the discovery would likely matter little to rival claimants Russia and Denmark, it has certainly cast our national attention on a remote area with which most Canadians feel little connection. The excitement of the Franklin saga may make us feel more emotionally engaged with our northern territories. The issue of Arctic melt and climate change is also a pressing one, though ironically it has enhanced our capacity for northern exploration and travel. With the alarmingly rapid loss of sheet ice in our north we must also be aware that the Northwest Passage (now potentially navigable for the first time) may become a viable trade route. How will Canada regulate that trade? How can we better protect our Arctic environment? The reawakening of interest in Franklin and his expedition provides a window through which we might examine our contemporary relationship with the Arctic. All of the modern political, technological and environmental questions that it underscores serve as a vivid reminder that history is not just in the past. History is happening right now, and we are the ones writing it. ••• Kate Humble is the interpretive co-ordinator at the Maritime Museum of B.C. The Maritime Museum will be running a regular column on historical and maritime topics. If you have any questions that you would like to see addressed here, please send them to khumble@mmbc.bc.ca.

mid-range torque making the Mustang accelerate easily and it passes well on the highway.
Looks
The looks scream European but its fits right at home here in Canada. The headlights and front grille look just like most Ford products and in fact I found myself doing a double take when I first came across one.
‘‘
The looks scream European but it fits right at home here in Canada.
’’
Ian Harwood
In the cab I found plenty of room and could see myself working in this all day, jumping out to make deliveries and working very comfortably. The Transit Van is available in three body lengths, 320 cm (126”), 363 cm (143.7”), 436 cm (172.2”), and three roof heights 211 (83.2”), 255 cm (100.7”), and 279 cm (110”). There is an available Crew Chief option that helps you track your fleet. A GPS enabled black box is mounted in the vehicle and records detail information such as location, speed, and fuel economy. It can also tell if the driver seat belt is in use.
Power
The available engines are 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 with 275 hp, 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 310 hp and a 3.2L I5 Diesel
INVESTING IN THE WELL-BEING OF FAMILIES Whether it’s helping people on the street find housing, providing
with 185 hp all mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission. Safety is important and a work van should be a safe place to work. The Transit van offers driver and passenger airbags, side curtain and front thorax side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and 3 point seat belts. If the SYNC option is chosen a distress call is made for you when the air bag goes off.
Roadworthy
The power rack and pinion steering set up helps this van drive like a dream. Turning is very easy and backing into loading bays is a piece of cake. The optional backup camera helps to dial in the proximity of the
rear bumper and a wall. I thought a van of this height would be more problematic on the highway with the cross winds but a trip across the new Port Mann being passed by a large semi I felt very comfortable. It is very much like driving a minivan.

around some downed cones without braking, until we straightened the wheels again, that was.

Can we do this again?’” GAIN is working on obtaining its own track to run its driving programs. From the amazing race to racing autocross Alexandra Straub
Toronto, ON.- When you’re doing an Amazing Racestyle activity, picking the proper teammate is the key success. Clearly, I chose improperly. I’ve occasionally watched Amazing Race on TV and as soon as the partnership starts to go sour, the whole thing can go sour. Blood starts to boil. Tension rises. Ratings go up. That’s all part of the game. It’s also part of the fun. Hyundai Fun Day has been an annual event for the last few years. It really needs no explanation because the title says it all. It’s all about fun. That mirth comes in various shapes and sizes and there’s lots to be had. Unless you’re stuck with a partner for an Amazing Race-style challenge who doesn’t even read the clues properly. Or forgets to tell you an important piece of information during the timed activity, like, say, what your next challenge is. With Type-A personality tendencies, the need to be spot-on sometimes takes over. For the better or the worse, that trait has led me to victories in other rally events.

Sadly, not on Fun Day. In true Canadian fashion, the first challenge was to score three shots on goal. Stick in hand and ball on the floor, part of the parking lot at the revamped Driver Development Track (DDT) at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park was dedicated to the nation’s favourite pastime (and no, it’s not drinking beer.) After completing the challenge, the stick was passed to my partner, who struggled, to say the least. A few minutes later, and quite a few shots on goal, we were finally given our
next clue. Our chariot for this part of the event was the Hyundai Elantra, equipped with a new 2.0L engine equipped with Gasoline Direct Injection, delivering 173 horsepower. He was deemed navigator while I drove. After we found the second clue, I asked him to take a photo of it – as it was outside of the vehicle - so we could look at it. Without even reading what he took a picture of, he said: “There was no clue. It was just a sign. I think we just head back.” I used my vetoing power and asked him to show me the photo of the clue he took. It didn’t say to drive back. Had some cameras been there, it would have made for some nail-biting television. We finally figured it out and kept on trekking. We didn’t have to go too far for any of the given clues, but since we lost a little bit of time at the beginning, I needed to make it up. Putting the Elantra’s acceleration to the test might not have been the instructions we were given, but it was what we had to do.
Making a long-ish story short, we didn’t come out as victors but the day in itself was a win all around. Veloster Turbos were ready and waiting to be driven around the autocross circuit that was specifically designed for us. A parking challenge with the Accent was quite fun: see how fast you can parallel park, pull forward into another spot, back into another, and then cross the finish line.
Hit a cone that marked the area you were supposed to stay in and you’d get additional time put on your score. Unleashing the Genesis V6 coupes on the fresh-faced DDT also had its sensa-
tional perks; complete with manual gearboxes. And when all was said and done, the all-new 2015 Sonata sedan and I would stick around for a few more days in rural Ontario and explore some
of the natural habitat in the Ganaraska region, just east of Toronto. www.hyundaicanada.com

Pic of the Week A collaborative venture between MINI and the Italian design and body-manufacturing specialist Touring Superleggera has produced this eye-catching prototype. The compact two-seater roadster will make its premiere appearance at the Paris Auto Show this coming weekend. If it goes into production will be a radical departure from the current MINI shape.
