I

t may include a few generations, but google search revealed something truly remarkable about Cranbrook. I was surprised to see a complete NHL hockey team — nine forwards (three lines), six defencemen, and three goaltenders — who

knew? The hockey players include: Frank Spring, Dan Spring, Corey Spring, Bob Murdoch, Don Murdoch, Greg Andrusak, Jason Marshall, Ryan Huska, Rob Niedermayer, Glen Cochrane, Steve Yzerman, Brad Lukowich, Ray Allison, Jon

Klemm, Ted McAneeley, and Scott Niedermayer. This group totalled 7,380 regular season NHL games, scored 1,428 goals and 2,584 assists for 4,012 points. Two are in the Hockey Hall Of Fame — Scott Niedermayer and Steve Yzerman (who cut his hockey teeth at

the Cranbrook Arena playing Minor Hockey, until his dad was transferred to Ottawa). Stevie Y was born at the old Cranbrook Hospital (which became the Tudor house, demolished by fire years ago), and the Yzerman family lived in a townhouse right behind the Green Clinic, where Dr.

Bob Niedermayer practiced medicine for so many years. Cranbrook got their hockey mojo in the mid-1960s, when the Cranbrook Royals were formed to play in the Western International Hockey League. Many of those Senior A hockey players went on to coach Cranbrook

Minor Hockey when they had retired from the Royals. Fellows like Frank Spring Jr., Marvin Ferg, Pud Downey, Wayne Doll. Colin Patterson from the Kimberley Dynamiters began mentoring the Cranbrook Colts.

Gaming event aims to help Children’s Hospital TRE VOR CR AWLEY Townsman Staff

Sometimes those extra lives come in handy when you’re in the middle of a game session. A group of local gaming enthusiasts are using their hobby as a unique way to fundraise for the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. For a $10 entry fee, anyone can come down to the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and game on their favourite video game platform, board game, or card games—from the traditional poker and blackjack to others such as Risk, Settlers of Catan and Dungeons and Dragons. The event—Extra Life—is the brainchild of Jeff Johnson, Dave Miller and Erin Schulz. Miller’s son, Alexander, required a heart transplant in 2005 and received one through the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Miller has participated in Extra Life fundraisers over the years, and teamed up with Johnson and Schulz to organize a local event this year.

The Cranbrook Boy and Girls Club has a new playhouse for their outdoor enclosure play area. The playhouse was donated by Maureen Frank, which was in turn given to her from Frank Everett. Frank said interestingly that the playhouse was built by Shelley and John Balfour for their daughters Emily and Mallory. The playhouse was towed and lifted into location by EFM Towing.

Cranbrook mothers mark World Breastfeeding Week TO W N S M A N S TA F F

As Canada celebrates World Breastfeeding Week from Oct. 1-7, Cranbrook mothers are encouraged to take part in the Cranbrook/Kimberley Breastfeeding Challenge at Rotary Park on Saturday at 11 a.m. There will be plenty of door prizes to give away and along with a baby-wearing fashion show, all organized by Over the Rainbow Family Services.

This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week—Breastfeeding: a winning goal for life—recognizes the lifetime benefits to breastfeeding that benefit both mothers and babies. Breastfeeding provides infants with unique nutritional and health benefits such as antibodies and reduced risk for developing asthma, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood

pressure. For the mother, breastfeeding helps the body recover from the stresses of pregnancy, labour and delivery. “Breastfeeding is natural, but not always easy,” said Patty Hallam, Knowledge Coordinator with Interior Health. “Learning to breastfeed and becoming comfortable with breastfeeding takes time. Support from a team of helpers that include family, friends, health-

care providers, and communities can make all the difference in building a woman’s confidence and comfort with her breastfeeding.” Public health nurses are available at at health units across Interior Health to assist with mothers and infants during the breastfeeding years to ensure that families have all the help needed for babies to get the best start in life.

581 Castlegar, 279 Elk Valley and 552 Key City Cranbrook Air Cadet Squadron all participated in the Fall Field Training Exercise, commonly referred to as an FTX, on September 26-28, 2014. We would like to thank the Cranbrook Rod & Gun Club for allowing us to utilize their facility and grounds for our training program. With direction from staff (five officers, two volunteer instructors and two screened parents), cadets had an exciting and successful training weekend. Training activities included outdoor range, rope bridges, stretcher carry, knots, GPS, hiking, search & rescue. Fun facts: Over this weekend, 390 MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat, Military Rations) were consumed; the collective “years of experience” within an air cadet squadron for all of the adult staff is 80 years; and 51 cadets (ages 12 – 18) were in attendance, including 15 females. For more information on the Air Cadet program in the Kootenay’s, contact: trainingdesk552@gmail.com, or phone Lt. Bott at 250-426-3685.

While the yellow flag iris may be a beautiful flower while in bloom, it is also a threat to aquatic ecosystems and wetlands across the continent, including those in our backyard here in the Kootenays. That’s why last weekend, the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council (EKIPC) hosted an

event in Skookumchuck to remove the aquatic invasive plant. Here in the East Kootenay, the small infestation at Skookumchuck is the only known location of yellow flag iris in the region. ther. “Left unmanaged, this solitary site could become an even larger problem downstream if it were to disperse and establish itself further down the Kootenay River,” Larson said. Volunteer help from the Jimsmith Lake Community Association, the Rocky Mountain Naturalists, and Springbrook Resort, EKIPC staff were able to remove existing patches of yellow flag iris which had spread down a small tributary of the Kootenay River. Larson said they were fortunate to catch the infestation early on and prevent it from spreading, but added there is still the threat of plant fragments and seeds which could repopulate the waterway. The site will need monitoring in future years to ensure the plant does not re-establish itself. Once it establishes itself, outcompetes native vegetation and creates dense stands of iris-dominant vegetation. In the Creston Valley wetlands along the Kootenay River it takes hours of volunteer work to control the infestation, as removal of the plant is done mostly by hand digging. That work is made arduous by the huge root systems the plant develops. It also prefers to grow in water, making removal more of a challenge. The Invasive Species Council of BC noted that the plant has quickly spread throughout the Okanagan valley, lower Similkameen Val-

Say it ain’t so …

Time is coming for a change of tires CAROLYN GRANT Daily Bulletin

We flipped the calendar into October this week and that means it’s time to ready ourselves for winter — put away the hoses, clean up the yards, and get winter tires on the car. Motorists may have noticed new highway signs installed in the past few weeks — new, larger signs advising motorists that winter tires are required on designated highways. It is always a question at this time of year as to whether having winter tires is the law. The answer is that it is, and it isn’t. Signs are posted on each of the designated highways (including out of Kimberley in both directions) to advise motorists where winter tires are required. These are generally located

approaching high mountain passes and interior highways where conditions can change from rain to snow very quickly. In the Interior, that is every highway. Highway 95A between Kimberley and Cranbrook requires winter tires, as do Routes 1 and 3. “You could receive a violation ticket for improper tires,” Cpl. Chris Newel of the Kimberley RCMP. “It only applies on Provincial Highways and designated areas. Hence the reason the signs are outside the city.” As a result of the technical analysis completed during the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review, winter tires have been defined as those labelled with either the winter mountain/snowflake symbol or the mud and snow (M+S) designa-

To be acceptable on provincial highways in the winter, your tires should carry either of the above symbols. tion. Winter tires must also be in good condition with a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm. RCMP, CVSE, and other policing agencies can prevent you from travelling and issue tickets if your vehicle is not properly equipped for road conditions. However, if you are in an accident, and your vehicle is not equipped with winter tires, that doesn’t automatically mean that your insurance is void. ICBC advises that driving without winter tires will not void your

insurance if you have a claim. It also won’t mean you’re automatically atfault in a crash. However, if you get in a crash where winter tires could have helped, not having them may affect whether — or how much — you are at fault. “In the event of a collision police will examine the tires to see if they comply,” Newel said. “Insurance is a separate issue.” Timing has also changed for winter tires. In previous years the timeframe was October 1 to April 30. The new timeframe is October 1 to March 31. In the end it comes down to common sense. “I strongly recommend proper winter tires,” Newel said. “That is those with the mountain/ snowflake. Your family’s safety could be riding on your tires.”

Mythical, multi-generational NHL team Continued from page 1 Frank Spring was the first player from Cranbrook to break into the NHL (1969-70 Boston Bruins). Spring was soon followed by his brother Danny Spring (first round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks). Dan played exclusively in the WHA. Then along came Bob Murdoch (two consecutive 20 goal seasons in the NHL, 1975-76) and his brother Don, who still holds an NHL record of scoring five goals in one game, when Murdoch played for the New York Rangers as a rookie. (Jack Murdoch, Bob and Don’s father, had the only lighted back yard rink in Cranbrook, very popular with the neighborhood kids). Local boy Ted McAneeley was a smooth-skating D-man for the California Golden Seals in the early 1970s. The next group of local boys to make it to The Show were Rob and Scott Niedermayer, Jon Klemm, Brad Lukowich, Glen Cochrane, Greg Andrusak and Jason Marshall (who was adept enough to play defense and forward for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks). Cranbrook also produced a National Hockey League Coach in Tom Renney. Born and raised in Cranbrook, Tom has

served as Head Coach in Invermere, and with the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers. He has recently been named President and CEO of Hockey Canada, based in Calgary. Tom has kindly agreed to coach this mythical and multigenerational NHL team from Cranbrook, and also make up the forward lines and defensive pairings for the boys. This Cranbrook NHL team needed quality goaltenders, so we procured the services of Wayne Doll from the old Cranbrook Royals of the WIHL of the early 1970s. West Kootenay author on tour for new book Arne Petryshen

When West Kootenay author Sean Arthur Joyce was researching his family tree, he discovered that immigration records showed his paternal grandfather came to Canada with three other boys and a chaperone, but without parents. When he consulted a genealogist he was introduced to the term Home Children.

That sparked his journalistic curiosity to investigate further and led to his newly released non-fiction “Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest: Canada’s Home Children in the West.” Between 1869 and 1948, 100,000 children from poor neighbourhoods in Britain were sent to Canada without parental support to work as indentured ser-

vants. Joyce said he hopes to raise awareness about Home Children. “The wider story interested me because I realized if this happened in my family, it must have happened in many other Canadian families,” he said. “There are an estimated four million people who can trace their roots back to Home Children.”

“Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest” chronicles this essential yet seldom-discussed aspect of Canadian history. Joyce’s book combines exhaustive research with memoir and creative nonfiction to paint a vivid picture of life for a Canadian Home Child. Joyce noted the Home Children practice kept up well into the

The opportunities are endless.” Along with the admission fee, there will be a concession, a 50-50 draw and a raffle, including prizes such as a $300 dollar prize package from the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort, Cards Against Humanity and all of its expansions, autographed Mick Foley merchandise, Destiny for the PlayStation 4, and the grand prize—a digital platinum package from Video Games Live, valued at $1,500 dollars. “The outpouring of support we have seen from both the local business community and international sponsors has been amazing,” Johnson

says. “Games like Destiny, Dance Central: Spotlight and Cards Against Humanity are all available as prizes, thanks to some awesome game developers who recognize the need to support our children’s hospitals any way we can.”

The Children’s Hospital in Calgary was chosen as the recipient for the fundraiser based on Miller’s past experience with his son, but also because of it’s proximity to the East Kootenay. “I have a two-yearold daughter myself, and while I have never need-

ed the services of the Alberta Children’s Hospital for her healthcare, I know how important it is to raise funds and support that hospital,” Johnson says. “Many families need their support and I may need it for my children one day.”

1900s, helped by dozens of immigration agencies, many of questionable repute. Though some of the children did well, many were exploited and abused, their new lives hardly an improvement on the ones they left behind. A few Canadian fam-

ilies adopted the children, but most were wanted strictly for their labour. Joyce’s book explores the lesser-known part of the story — what happened to some of these children in Western Canada. The author also explores the impact of

this experience on subsequent generations of Canadians. Joyce will be coming to the Cranbrook Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and the Kimberley Library on Friday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. as part of his Columbia Basin tour.

Mysterious power of infinite books It’s like your birthday and Christmas Day combined — in my case, I mean that literally. In my dream combination of birthday and Christmas Day, all the presents are made up of books (well, money, too). That’s what it’s like when the doors open at 9:30 a.m., and into the Ktunaxa Gym we herd, we drooling bibliophiles, for the start of the Cranbrook Public Library/Sunrise Rotary Club annual five-day giant book sale. There’s nothing that beats that initial rush, that electric shiver up my spine, that two seconds of seeing the vast expanse of tables, a prairie of books, a great midwest of the printed word. I know, in those two seconds, that I will find the perfect book for me, as well as the book I read so many years ago that I’ve been searching for ever since, as well as the book I dreamed about years ago and always wondered if it was real, as well as that book I’ve always wanted you to read so that we’d think alike, as well as that first edition Roderick Haig-Brown, as well as that hard cover copy of “10 Steps To Astral Projection,” as well as that compendium of spells which will make me smarter, better looking and quicker witted, something

that alcohol has so far failed to do, no matter how much I’ve experimented. In short, it’s possible that every book ever printed is there, waiting for me, in those two seconds after I’ve walked into the Library’s massive book sale. The psychology is weird: I see another salegoer huddled over a table — the “Classics” section, say — and I’m driven to Barry squeeze in beside him at once to make sure he’s not Coulter getting something I would regret missing if I knew it was there. But as I’m heading towards him, I see another salegoer huddled over another table, and I’m torn about where I should go. It’s exciting. It’s not a quiet, languorous browse. And even before the doors open — with all of us squeezed into the little hallway outside the Ktunaxa Gym, I can feel the atmosphere of anticipation, and I can tell that everyone — my book-buying rivals — feel the same way I do. Rumours of the death of the printed word are greatly exaggerated. A book has great power, like an electricity. An older, used book as a certain power about it too. Piles and piles of books laid out like they are all weekend, is like a nuclear reactor. I

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

cannot imagine a line-up on a cool fall morning for the latest digital download. There’s not the same electricity. Another mystical aspect of the massive book sale is that there is never anything about fighting over scraps. Though it’s exciting to be there at the beginning, it’s amazing what can be found right through to the final hours. It’s something that keeps some of us going back every day, if possible. It’s never “what did I miss the first time.” It’s “what can I find this time.” It’s a flowing spring of words. The Cranbrook Public Library/Sunrise Rotary’s annual book sale to end all book sales is one of the great moments of the Cranbrook autumn. It opened Wednesday morning for Library members, and to the public at large on Thursday morning. Today, Friday, Oct. 3, through Saturday it opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. And on Sunday the “Bag Sale” runs from 9:30 am to 1 pm. Bring a Cranbrook Public Library bag and fill it for $5 or purchase a bag on site and fill it for $6 (no other bags can be used). Head on down to the Ktunaxa Gym, across Kootenay Street from the Cranbrook Public Library. The books are waiting. Barry Coulter is Editor of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Roger Casement’s ‘The Crime Against Ireland and How The War May Right It,’ Albert Beveridge’s ‘What is Back of the War,,’ and John Burgess’s ‘The European War of 1914’ also found their way via Albert to libraries in every state. Public libraries in the South were bombarded by the strange book ‘Employment, Contrary to International Law, of Colored Troops upon the European Arena of War, by England and France’ — a less than subtle title if there ever was one. But then Albert left his briefcase on the subway, which quickly made its way to the FBI. In turn, the FBI leaked its entire contents to the press. The New York World headline of August 15, 1915, read ‘How Germany has Worked in the U.S. to Shape Opinion.’ This was quickly followed by journalist Frederick W. Wiles’ book ‘The German-American Plot: The Campaign to Capture the Sympathy and Support of the United States.’ England reacted to this news with a comprehensive and refined counter-attack; a far more subtle infiltration of America’s public libraries. To do so, they would need someone not only loyal to the Crown but someone who also possessed extensive knowledge of the American temperament. You guessed it: A Canadian. Next week! All things bright and beautiful

On October 4, many Christians celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Churches will hold a service of “Blessing the Animals,” in which people are invited to bring animals to church with them for a blessing. The blessing often takes the form of a prayer such as the following: “Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures!” St. Francis was born in the late 12th century to a wealthy cloth merchant, but after a vision in which God commissioned him to “repair my falling house”, Francis renounced it all and declared himself “wedded to Lady Poverty”. He divested himself of all material possessions and devoted himself to serving the poor. Francis took literally the words in Matthew’s gospel, “As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for labourers deserve their food.” (Matthew 10: 7–10) Francis and his companions freed themselves from the hold of wealth. They determined that their life’s work would be to declare in word and action the love of God in

Christ, “using words if necessary.” At the heart of his mission was a profound respect for all life. He experienced all of God’s creation as sacred. In his day, if one wanted to seek God, the traditional religious way was to turn inward. Monks tried to transcend this world, spending their lives in contemplating God, seeking to know God fully. Francis chose a different route. Instead of turning inwards, he turned outwards. The world was shot through with God’s glory. Francis Rev. Yme discovered God’s presence Woensdregt and love everywhere he looked. God was to be found in the midst of this world, in the everyday moments of life, in the midst of a bountiful and wonderfully varied creation. Rather than fleeing the world to find God, God is to be found right here, in the physical, material world. The paradox of Francis’ life is that although he gave up material possessions, he valued the material things of the earth more completely. He treasured people who worked with their hands — farmers, craftspeople, artists, bakers — and he valued the fruit of their hands. He esteemed material things not as having intrinsic worth in and of themselves, but because they displayed the immense variety and wonder of God’s creative imagination. Francis had a remarkable belief in the universal ability of all creatures to praise God. His famous Canticle of the Creatures includes the words, “All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brother Sun … Sister Moon and Stars … Brothers Wind and Air … Sister Water … Brother Fire … Sister Earth … Sister Death. All praise be yours, my Lord, through

all that you have made. Happy those who endure in peace.” For Francis, life was an interconnected web. We are kin to each other, all creatures joined in the dance of life. Animals, plants, the water and the air, and human beings — we need one another in order for life to be whole and good. A millennium ago, Francis knew what we are only dimly beginning to understand, that all of life is interconnected, and that if we destroy any part of the environment, it also diminishes us. He is quoted as saying “If anyone would exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have someone who will deal likewise with fellow human beings.” Most of the world’s religions have a sense that respecting animal life is part of the natural makeup of human beings and, indeed, part of the moral sensitivity that makes us human. With our increasing attention to the environment and to ecological issues and ecological justice, Francis’ love for creation takes on a whole new meaning and power for us. If we are all creatures of God, then nothing is expendable. Christ Church Anglican will celebrate St. Francis on Sunday, October 5, at 2:00 pm. I invite you to join us for our brief annual “Blessing of the Animals” service. Bring your animals and pets with you to church that afternoon for a special blessing. In the spirit of Francis, who called the animals his brothers and sisters, we celebrate the goodness of God, who calls us to live in peace with all creatures, and indeed with the whole of creation, treasuring it as God’s wonderful gift to us. Ice host Chiefs in first home tilt of 2014-15 season Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Kootenay Ice make their 2014-15 WHL home debut tonight at 7 p.m. when they host the Spokane Chiefs at Western Financial Place. The Ice (1-2-0-0) are coming off a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centrium Sept. 27. With a season-opening schedule that sees the Ice play seven of eight games on the road to start the campaign, fans in Cranbrook haven’t seen WHL hockey since April 14 when the Medicine Hat Tigers edged the Ice 2-1 en route to a seven-game, second-round playoff victory. “There’s a lot more pressure on us having the home-opener,” said Kootenay Ice assistant coach Jay Henderson prior to practice Thursday. “But at the end of the day, it’s nice to play at home. You have the hometown crowd and to get two points is a big thing for us. “Anytime you can win, it’s nice to put that streak together. As a mental thing, to put some points on the

board, that’s going to be huge for us.” After Friday’s home festivities, the Ice return to their nomad road life with a Saturday night contest in Calgary against the Hitmen (1-20-1) before heading east for three games in three nights in Saskatchewan. The Ice visit Regina (22-0-0) Oct. 8, Moose Jaw (1-3-0-0) Oct. 9 and Swift Current (2-4-0-0) Oct. 10. With that in mind, the Ice could certainly benefit from getting two points and kick-starting a streak tonight at home. “It’s been a long time since we’ve played at home,” Henderson said. “It’s nice not having a game every other night, having a week off for some practice time.

That’s needed right now, especially early on in the season. That’s been beneficial to us. “[There has been] a lot of attention to detail. What we talk about lately is the compete factor, but within that compete factor is a lot of detail we have to learn to execute on, so it’s nice to have that practice time.” The Ice were without centre Luke Philp Saturday in Red Deer. The 18-year-old veteran was out of the lineup with a lower-body injury but is slated to return to the lineup for the home-opener against the Chiefs. “We need better puck support all over the ice,” Philp said. “We didn’t really have much time in the offensive

zone [against Red Deer] and it starts with [puck] support. “We want to turn things around here. We’ve had a good week of practice so far. We’ve kept things really competitive in practice. We want to bring our competitive levels up every game.” Following Saturday’s thumping, Kootenay Ice general manager Jeff Chynoweth finalized the team’s roster, re-assigning forward Shane Allan and defenceman Mark O’Shaughnessy while outright releasing import centre Alexander Chirva.

The Moscow native had suited up in all three games to start the season and his release leaves a good chunk of minutes behind. “[Those minutes will be filled by] guys who are going to compete,” Henderson said. “That’s been our main focus this past week -- attention to detail. It’s guys who are executing early on in the game that are going to get that opportunity to get that ice time. The door is open for a lot of guys to earn that spot. It’s not going to be given to anybody.” On the flip side of the puck, the Chiefs are un-

defeated to start the 2014-15 campaign. Spokane opened the campaign with a pair of victories over the Tri-City Americans, including a 4-2 triumph on the road Sept. 20 and a narrow 3-2 win Sept. 27 at home. The win Sept. 27 gave Chiefs head coach Don Nachbaur his 600th-career WHL victory, good enough for fourth in league history, behind Ken Hodge (742 wins), Kamloops Blazers bench boss Don Hay (611) and Lorne Molleken (603). LWs Dominic Zwerger and Adam Helewka enter the game with three points apiece to

lead the Chiefs, while 19-year-old Garret Hughson has sparkled with a .930 save percentage and 2.00 goalsagainst average in the team’s two triumphs. After tonight’s contest, the Chiefs head home to host the Prince George Cougars Saturday while the Ice venture across the Alberta border to face the Calgary Hitmen. Notes: D Rinat Valiev is out two to four weeks with a lower-body injury and won’t be available this weekend; G Wyatt Hoflin made the 1,000th save of his WHL career Sept. 27 in Red Deer.

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators have named star defenceman Erik Karlsson as ninth captain in team history and have signed forward Bobby Ryan to a sev-

en-year contract extension. Karlsson replaces Jason Spezza, who was traded to the Dallas Stars after holding the captaincy for one year. Chris Phillips and Chris Neil remain alternate captains. The 24-year-old Karlsson thanked teammates past and present for helping him become the player he is today. “I’m a little bit nervous actually

It’s an honour to be a captain of a Canadian team and it’s not something that I could have hoped for when I came here, but I embrace it and I’m very much looking forward to the responsibilities to come. I am right now a very happy guy and I look forward to the upcoming season.” Senators general manager Bryan Murray said the decision to make Karlsson captain made sense as they always knew they wanted him to take on a leadership role.

Academy competition Whitecaps East and West Prospect Academies hit the pitch at Moir Park

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Whitecaps Kootenay East Prospects Academy isn’t even a month old, but Sunday morning its players will hit the pitch at Moir Park for the first competitive soccer action in academy history. “It’s unbelievable,” said Whitecaps regional head coach Brett Adams Thursday morning over the phone from Nelson. “[Having] started this process a year ago, who would have thought, a year later, we’re going to be playing two Whitecaps Academies against

each other in the same region? “It’s phenomenal. We’re very happy and we’re very proud of it. This weekend will showcase the talent we do have within this area.” The Whitecaps Kootenay West Prospects Academy will travel from Nelson, where it is based, to Cranbrook for Sunday’s festivities. The day will feature mini tournaments and matches between East and West academies at every age level, from U-10 to U-18, boys and girls. Teams will also run through a variety of skill sessions with coaches. This is the first-ever in-house Kootenay Academy games for the Whitecaps developmental programs. It will be a busy day for Adams and the two academies, with matches and training sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and running straight through to 7:30

p.m. “This is the first of many [competitive matches], we hope,” Adams added. “Whether that be through playing against each other or whether that be playing against other academies or whether that be teams being sent off to various different tournaments. This will be the first of many. “Don’t get me wrong, it has taken a lot of work to organize it and get it up and off the ground. But I’m sure we’re going to see some great results this weekend.” Sept. 17 marked the first training sessions for the Kootenay East Prospects Academy, which evolved from the Whitecaps Cranbrook Skills Centre. The Skills Centre was established in September 2013. There are 240 participants enrolled between the two Kootenay academies. Despite the geo-

graphical divide that exists between the two programs, the training module and mission-operative remain the same for all players. “We follow a structure and a syllabus,” Adams said. “That syllabus, we hope, gets [players] ready to think about the way we want to play. “We’ve spent a lot of time on just getting the players to understand the Whitecaps way. This weekend is to have a little look to see where individual players are at with that.” The fall session for the Kootenay East Prospects Academy began Sept. 17 and runs through Nov. 19. The fall session for the Kootenay West Prospects Academy began Sept. 13 and runs through Dec. 7. The programs will then recommence once the snow melts in the spring.

Whitecaps Kootenay Academies Sunday schedule: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. - U10 Boys (East vs. West); U10 Girls (East vs. West) 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. - U11/12 Boys Mini Tournament; U12 Girls (East vs. West) 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. - U10 Co-ed training session 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. - U12 Co-ed training session 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. - U14 Boys Mini Tournament; U14 Girls (East vs. West) 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - U14 Co-ed training session 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. - U16/U18 Co-ed training session 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. U16/U18 Boys Mini Tournament; U16/U18 Girls Mini Tournament

Evidence thrown out in Hernandez case Erik a Niedowski Associated Press

FALL RIVER,FALL RIVER, Mass. — Bullets found in an apartment rented by ex-New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez and a magazine found in his Hummer were thrown out as evidence in his murder case Thursday by a judge who said state police didn’t demonstrate probable cause for the searches. Judge E. Susan Garsh said there were “absolutely no facts” linking

Hernandez “in any way at all to the crime under investigation” in an affidavit supporting the warrant application to search his Franklin apartment. That warrant was for a cellphone belonging to co-defendant Carlos Ortiz, who was with Hernandez when Odin Lloyd was killed. Police applied for additional warrants after that first search, including one to look for ammunition. But the judge ruled evidence gathered during the subsequent

Friday, OCTOber 3, 2014

searches had to be thrown out because authorities hadn’t demonstrated probable cause for the first. Authorities said they never recovered the weapon used in Lloyd’s killing but believe it was a .45-calibre pistol. The items tossed out include .45-calibre bullets and a .45-calibre magazine. Hernandez, 24, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the June 2013 killing of Lloyd, a semi-professional football player

who was dating Hernandez’s fiancee’s sister. He’s being held without bail. Bristol County prosecutors had previously indicated they wouldn’t oppose the defence’s effort to keep the items out. But, in court filings, they provided no explanation other than to say it was “in the interests of justice, and to avoid any delay.” In her ruling from the bench in Superior Court, Garsh said police might have satisfied the probable cause requirement

Sharks outdoor game nearly sold out Josh Dubow Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. ANTA CLARA, Calif. — The excitement is palpable, the tickets are nearly all sold and the stadium is a technological marvel. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman only needs one more thing for the league’s second outdoor game ever in California — on Feb. 21 when the San Jose Sharks host the Los Angeles Kings at the $1.3 billion Levi’s Stadium — to be a success. “We’re going to need it about 40 degrees cooler on the day of the game,” Bettman told San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York at a news conference Thursday promoting the matchup. Bettman spoke on a day when the temperature was right around 90 degrees, obviously not ideal conditions for a hockey game. But as long as there’s no rain storm, Bettman is confident the ice will hold up just fine in February after watching the success of last season’s outdoor game between the Kings and Anaheim Ducks at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. “As soon as we saw what we had at Dodger Stadium, we knew we were coming up here,” Bettman said. “We knew the Sharks wanted it and they kept saying, ‘If you can do it there, you can — showing Ortiz’s phone was of value to the investigation — simply by attaching a copy of an existing affidavit supporting a search warrant for Hernandez’s home. The judge heard a third day of testimony on separate defence motions to suppress additional evidence, including from Hernandez’s BlackBerry and home surveillance system. The defence maintains Hernandez was unlawfully questioned when state police executed search warrants at his North Attleborough

do it here.’ As soon as we saw what an incredible success that game was, there was no question we were coming.” Tickets went on sale to the general public starting Thursday and fewer than 5,000 remain, according to Sharks chief operating officer John Tortora. Tortora said he expected to see those sold quickly and anticipated a capacity crowd of 68,500. “I think it tells you a lot about our fan base and the growth of hockey in California,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. “To me, this is a celebration of both those things. All the players that have played here, the fans that have supported us, the community. We take this as a great compliment and a great opportunity to continue to grow our game here.” For Sharks players who have watched other teams play outdoor games around the league, the opportunity to play in front of this many fans at a spectacle like this is an opportunity they will cherish. “When I was a kid when there was nobody watching,” defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic said. “This with 70,000 fans will be different. It will be a lot of fun. It will be a great event for the fans, for the city and for the players as well.”

Bettman said there were a few main factors in holding the game in Santa Clara instead of at the more picturesque AT&T Park in San Francisco, including how technologically advanced the newer stadium is, the proximity to the Sharks fan base and the higher seating capacity. The 49ers connection to hockey didn’t hurt either. York is a longtime hockey fan whose family used to own the Pittsburgh Penguins. York’s mother, Denise DeBartolo York, even has her name engraved on the Stanley Cup for when Pittsburgh won it in 1991. Wilson and 49ers general manager Trent Baalke have also become close friends over the years, trading secrets about how they approach their jobs. “If you go over to the 49ers training facility, when you first walk in the first picture is of a Stanley Cup. Pretty interesting, huh?” Wilson said. “Jed’s funny. Jed’s younger than a lot of our players. But, his history, he knows the game, knows the players and talks about it. Trent Baalke’s college roommate was (former NHL player) Joel Otto at Bemidji State. I always kid Trent, I think he’s a hockey guy in a football world.”

home. Trooper Michael Bates testified he knew Hernandez had previously referred questions in the investigation to his attorney but asked the ex-Patriot for the phone’s passcode to facilitate investigators’ work. Hernandez at first said he couldn’t remember the passcode, then provided one, he said. Bates said the phone was ultimately found not to be password protected. Prosecutors said that Hernandez and Lloyd texted about meeting within hours of his kill-

ing and that the BlackBerry contained communications between Hernandez and another co-defendant, Ernest Wallace.Witnesses also testified Thursday about the seizure of a rifle from a Toyota that was parked in Hernandez’s garage. Hernandez faces weapons charges stemming from the gun’s seizure. The defence says the warrant didn’t cover a search of the car, which wasn’t owned by Hernandez. Winnipeg judge says police violated rights of man found carrying knife, baton C ANADIAN PRESS

WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg man found carrying two concealed weapons — a knife and a baton — has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing on the grounds police violated his rights. Ksamil Kalturnyk was arrested in March 2013 outside of an apartment building after police had received a call from an unknown male who suggested he was “Public Enemy Number One.” Arriving officers spotted Kalturnyk standing outside digging in the snow and concluded he was the caller because he was behaving in a way “somewhat reflective of possible mental instability.” During a search they found a knife and a baton stuffed inside the pouch of his hooded sweatshirt, and charged

him with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. But provincial court Judge Brian Corrin has ruled the police had no right to stop and search the accused. He said the two officers’ explanation that they thought Kalturnyk was the 911 caller had no basis in law and was a “serious” Charter breach. “Kalturnyk was not related to have done anything indicative of his being the caller, for instance, flagging down the police cruiser by waving his arms for example,” Corrin wrote in his decision. Without any reason to tie him to the call, police didn’t have the right to arbitrarily question and search him, the judge ruled. Corrin also questioned the accuracy of testimony given by both

police officers, saying they did not appear to be “forthright” about the true circumstances of the incident. The judge said his decision in this case shouldn’t be taken as a blanket condemnation of a police officer’s ability to do their job and question people on the street, but rather an incident-specific ruling. “I am not suggesting that it is in any way inherently objectionable for police officers to speak to citizens while in the course of their patrol duties. This case is specifically focused only on the rights of persons so approached to make informed choices whether to speak to law enforcement authorities,” he said. “Individual liberty involves a citizen’s right to make an informed choice about whether to walk away from or speak to the police.”

Bullfrogs invasion poses threat to Montana species ASSOCIATED PRESS

BILLINGS, Mon. — An invasion of American bullfrogs that will eat just about anything — including each other — is spreading downstream along Montana’s Yellowstone River and poses a potential threat to native frogs, government scientists said Thursday. Bullfrogs were found in recent surveys along a 66-mile stretch of the river from the Laurel area downstream to Custer, said U.S. Geological Survey biologist Adam Sepulveda. The number of breeding sites for the animals almost quadrupled between 2010 and last year, to 45. “They are going to eat anything they can fit into their mounts. It doesn’t matter if it’s another frog or a bird or a mosquito,” said Sepulveda, who co-authored a study on Yellowstone River bullfrogs appearing in the journal Aquatic Invasions. Bullfrogs as large as 10 to 12 inches long when outstretched have been found. One that was caught and cut open near the Audubon Conservation Center in Billings last year had an

oriole in its stomach. State and federal agencies initially tried to stop the invaders in their tracks by killing them all off, but gave up after the number of bullfrogs overwhelmed the effort. They’re now trying to come up with a strategy to at least contain their spread. Bullfrogs are native

Hungry bruins seek food in Nevada ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENO, Nev. — An already busy bear season has exploded in the Sierra with 10 hungry bruins captured in a single day this week near Reno and Lake Tahoe as drought continues to make food scarce. Nevada wildlife officials trapped a mother bear and two

areas. State wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says a surge in activity is expected with cooler temperatures this time of year, when a typical bear’s food intake jumps from 3,000 to 25,000 calories a day. That’s the human equivalent of 83 cheeseburgers.

cubs just west of Reno on Wednesday morning, then another sow and two cubs on Tahoe’s south shore at Stateline on Wednesday afternoon. Since July 1, they’ve caught 42 bears and released all but two back to the wild. An additional 10 have been killed by cars as they move into more populated

Canadian universities slipping in global rank C ANADIAN PRESS

Canadian universities are slipping in a global ranking based on learning environment, research, innovation and other performance indicators. Eight Canadian universities made the top 200 in the Times Higher Education ranking, and of those, only one — the University of Toronto — held its position at number 20.

Another, the University of Victoria, jumped into the top 200 at number 173. The organization uses 13 criteria to evaluate and rank eligible universities. Schools are excluded if they don’t teach undergraduates, have too narrow a focus or if their research output was less than 1,000 articles between 2009 and 2013.

While American universities still dominate the list, they are also losing ground as Asia’s leading universities continue their steady climb. The other Canadian universities to crack the top 200 are the University of British Columbia, McGill, McMaster, the University of Montreal, the University of Alberta and the University of Ottawa.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll want to go along with the majority, but a partner could worry you. You come from a point of caring, but you also would like to spend time with your immediate circle. Follow your intuition, and consider blending everyone together. Tonight: Just don’t be alone. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might want to move in a new direction, but a loved one could have many questions. You are likely to feel overwhelmed from dealing with as much negativity as you seem to be getting. You will need to pull back and do some thinking. Tonight: Out and about. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Reach out to someone at a distance. You might not be comfortable with what you are hearing, and you could have a lot of questions. The answers you get could force you to hit the pause button until you gain a broader perspective. Trust your instincts. Tonight: Take off

ASAP. CANCER (June 21-July 22) A partner will make a decision that forces your hand. A discussion could point to more disagreement. Accept what you are hearing, and respect this person’s point of view. You might be taken aback by what happens as a result. Tonight: Enjoy the moment. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A roommate or loved one loves teasing you. However, you could close down unintentionally. Is this behavior really what you want to do? Consider your role in this situation. Keep conversations light and easy. Tonight: Follow someone else’s cue. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Consider what needs to happen with a close friend who often unnerves you. You could opt to meet a trusted loved one for a late lunch to discuss this situation. Recognize what is happening at home and in your immediate circle. Tonight: Go with the flow. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your imagination will come out

Tundra

in conversations, particularly through your word choice. A misunderstanding could have you asking yourself how you could have avoided a difficult situation. A flirtation could start up from out of the blue. Tonight: Let the fun begin. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are likely to trigger a key person in your life by making a sharp comment. You might be hearing only what you want to hear. You could be overwhelmed and more negative than you realize. Clear your mind, and take a walk. Do something you love. Tonight: Head home early. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your interest might be piqued, and you could have a lot of questions. Let a friend reveal as much as he or she feels comfortable revealing. You might decide to leave well enough alone; otherwise, you could see a problem evolving. Tonight: Catch up on others’ news. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Be aware of the cost of proceeding as you have been. Your ability to remain positive lies largely

in the fact that you know when to take a step back. Follow through when you think you are on better ground; you will be a lot happier that way. Tonight: Your treat. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You don’t need to explain anything, or at least you feel that way. Be careful -- a problem could ensue at a later date when this attitude could be thrown back in your face. Though you might be annoyed at everything you are hearing, be diplomatic. Tonight: Kick up your heels. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might want to slow down and do some thinking before you take action. One-on-one relating will result in some interesting ideas. Take your time, and don’t feel pressured by what is happening around you. Time is your friend right now. Tonight: Keep a secret. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I have been the stepmom to grown stepchildren for 20 years. Their father died a few years ago. We live in the same town, and their mother, his ex, is also here. I am ready to give up on any relationship with them. I invite them to do things, communicate often and support them and the grandkids on social media. I send birthday and holiday cards. But I have never felt important in their lives. And since their father died, I haven’t once been invited over for dinner or a holiday event. I’m sure with their mother around, they don’t feel comfortable with both of us at the same table. When Dad was alive, they visited us separately from his ex. I don’t have children of my own. I travel a lot and have a wide circle of friends. Perhaps I am not motherly enough or put too much into considering them my family when they already have a mother and don’t seem to need a stepmom. They are not mean to me. They just don’t initiate anything or think to phone me. Should I just give up? Should I tell them? I am getting myself all worked up over this. It really hurts to see family events posted on Facebook, etc., and I’m not included -- ever. I am dating again and have recently met a man who has grown children. It makes me hesitant to continue seeing him. What do I do? -- Stressed and Nervous Dear Nervous: Children who are not raised by the stepparent often do not form as close of a bond as you might think. The relationship can be pleasant but distant. When Dad was alive, the kids made more of an effort, so if you want things to improve, you will have to do the majority of the communicating and inviting. Please do not expect to be included in family events where their mother is present. Instead, consider inviting the kids over for a Sunday brunch. As for future relationships, each one is different. Please don’t let this experience prevent you from finding another. Dear Annie: I am continually amazed at your Victorian responses to readers whose spouses are cheating. So many of your female writers seem to undergo a cataclysmic seizure at the briefest flirtations of their men with other women. This is childish. Of course men are expected to look at and admire the beauty of other women. And women wear the tightest, most revealing garb they can get away with, thereby inviting such scrutiny. In one letter you printed, a guy admitted to cheating on his wife of 44 years, confessing the same and being forgiven. But his wife was still badgering him for details, and you thought she was justified in wanting her questions answered. The right answer should have been for her to get over it. She either has forgiven him, in which case shut up about it, or she hasn’t, in which case leave. -- Happy Man Dear H.M.: It’s always so amusing to get a man’s take on how a woman is supposed to feel. For women who don’t care that their man cheats (or who enjoy the same benefits), that is their choice. But if you marry someone who expects you to be faithful, it is not unreasonable that you keep your word. Of course, that requires maturity, self-discipline and respect for one’s partner. If she needs answers in order to put it behind her, it’s a small price to pay. Dear Annie: Like “Stuffed in Pennsylvania,” I had a mother-in-law who expressed her love through food. She was an excellent cook and hard to resist. When I didn’t want to stuff myself, I would say, “I just can’t. But this would taste great for lunch tomorrow. Can I take it with me?” That helped her get rid of extra food, and I often had a terrific lunch or snack later. -- Indiana Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
