Rimbey Fire Department members always on call for safety By Treena Mielke They come from all walks of life; businessmen, teachers, moms, construc-
tion workers, farmers and ambulance drivers. But, whatever their profession, the
men and women who belong to Rimbey Volunteer Fire Department all have the same objectives in mind.

They want to make a difference and they want to help. And they do just that. Fire Chief John Weisgerber said there are about 23 members on the department, presently. More are always needed, he added. “We always need people who are available during the day. There is a constant turnover with people moving in and out of town.” The department accepts new members who are in good physical condition and are ready and willing to be trained. “Once you decide to join, we will do the training,” Weisgerber said. The fire department covers the area that stretches West of the Fifth Meridian in Ponoka County and their equipment includes two pumpers, a tanker and a rescue unit, an off road bush truck and a ranger. Calls, which can happen anytime during the day or night, are going up. “Right now we are only about five calls short of the number we had all of last year,” the fire chief said. “And every year they go up.” The fire department responds to all calls, whether they are for accidents or fires. “We go where we are needed,” said Weisgerber. Being a fire fighter is a challenging and rewarding job, but it can be emotionally difficult at times, he added. “You always meet people on the worst day of their lives or at the very least, a pretty bad day,” he said. “That’s the hardest thing.” The fire department practices on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the fire hall. Fire prevention week is Oct. 5 – 11 and Rimbey fire department reminds the public to drop in to their open house to be held Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the fire hall. Hotdogs and refreshments will be served and the firemen will be on hand to chat. The theme of this year’s fire prevention week is Smoke Alarms Save Lives. Smoke alarms should be tested every month.

Rimbey RCMP make two drug busts last week By Treena Mielke
Rimbey Sgt. Mark Groves and Const. Jonathan Maillet with drugs and other stolen items which were recently confiscated by the RCMP. APN Photo
Arrest warrant issued in robbery
Drug dealers who have Rimbey targeted as their next stop to make a deal might want to think again. Rimbey RCMP made two significant drug busts last week, and have no plans to slack off in their relentless quest to put these dangerous individuals who are responsible for the illegal activity of dealing behind bars for a very long time. While Sgt. Mark Groves of the Rimbey RCMP did not divulge much information as to the action preceding the drug busts one can be sure the local Mounties have inside information that leads them to be at the right place at the right time. The first drug bust occurred when an officer pulled over a vehicle traveling to Rimbey on Highway 20 at around 10:30 p.m. last Friday. Groves said the police seized a quantity of methamphetamine and cocaine from the vehicle. The 29-year-old driver from the Eckville area also had in his possession six-cell phones, a police scanner, prohibited weapons including brass knuckles, knives, bats and an imitation glock handgun. The police seized the vehicle and charged the driver accordingly.
It works efficiently. AND SO DO WE.
By Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News Sylvan Lake RCMP last Thursday issued an arrest warrant in connection with the Sept. 16 armed robbery of Booster Juice in Sylvan Lake. Kevin Gray Taylor, 30, of no fixed address, has been charged with robbery with an offensive weapon (knife), uttering threats to cause bodily harm, and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence. Police describe him as Caucasian with brown hair and blue eyes, and say he’s 178 centimetres (five feet 10 inches) tall, and weighs 91 kg (200 pounds). He’s been known to travel frequently between Alberta and Manitoba, and drives a black fourdoor 2000 Chevrolet Impala with a window missing on the driver’s side. The vehicle has Manitoba licence plates HAC 387. Police believe Taylor to be armed and dangerous, and say he should not be approached. Those with information on his whereabouts are asked to contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment at 403-858-7200, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.
The second drug bust occurred only a few days later. Last Wednesday morning, RCMP stopped a car in Rimbey. Two men and a woman from Red Deer who are wanted on serious charges were apprehended. The police also found methamphetamine and marijuana in the vehicle. Groves said the incidents of such drug busts are becoming higher, and he warns drug dealers to stay out of town. “We are continuing to target individuals bringing meth in. Drug dealers need to stay away from Rimbey.”

Surprised by the unexpected Is your cup half full or is it half empty? I have debated this particular question with myself at great length lately. With winter’s icy doorstep just one shake of a snow globe away, I’m struggling to mentally capture the ‘feel good, half full’ feeling about life in general. Every day when I drive the familiar ribbon of highway that eventually takes me to my place of employment, I see changes around me that remind me not to be too happy. The trees, once all proud and flaunting their stunning fall attire, are starting to look all bare and forlorn. Even the sky doesn’t look friendly anymore, and as often as not greets me in the Treena Mielke morning with an icy, On The Other Side cold stare. And the other day I had to scrape my windshield. And, I haven’t even mentioned the construction which is very much alive and well on our Alberta highways and byways, and even on other little roads where potholes dare to flourish. It seems in our lovely province where the wild rose lives on on license plates and in roadside ditches, our most common roadway signs are ‘construction ahead and ‘detour.’ But, ironically, I’m here to tell you being forced to take a detour is not always bad. The other morning, I obediently took my grouchy old self and my trusty Hyundai on the detour route just like the sign said and, voila, I
was surprised by delight. I got to drive by the lake. Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten about the lake and its many moods and how it seems to hold its own particular charm, no matter what the weather. Even when the wind is angry and mean and whips up the lake’s blue pudding waters into frothy whitecaps, it is awesome. And, on a quiet and still morning, when God has ironed out all its wrinkles, the lake just lies there looking all blue and tranquil, making me think of the quiet blue gaze of my six-month old grandson. Steady. Calm. Peaceful!
If I was a wise and philosophical woman, I could, perhaps, relate the detours we are sometimes forced to take simply because the road ahead is under construction, to the struggles that happen to each and every one of us, all the time. Disappointments. Frustrations. Illnesses. Worry. Exhaustion. Feeling overworked and under appreciated. Exhaustion. Oh right, I already said that. Seriously, though I’m not really wise or philosophical, but I certainly am happy because of a detour I was forced to take. It never hurts to be remind-
ed of beauty. It makes it easier to focus on the ‘half full’ concept. It’s true. There are those little, full of surprise, happy moments that often drop into our day, unnoticed. And we should remember to notice them. The other day my husband, out of the clear blue sky of nothing, actually said “we should clean out the garage so you can park in there this winter.” Wow, what a good and novel idea. Parking in the garage. Who would have thought it? I’m excited, already.
Free Trade is good for Canada and Alberta In these fragile global economic times it is important that we keep focused on growth and strong trade partnerships that are critical to Canada and Alberta’s long-term prosperity. When one-in-five Canadian jobs depends on exports, our Government must remained focused on creating jobs and furthering opportunities for all Canadians and free trade agreements helps achieve these goals. I am proud to be a Member of a Government that has launched the most ambitious trade expansion plan in our countries history. In less than 7 years our Government has concluded Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with 38 countries, while in office the Liberals were only able to conclude 4 FTA’s. Our prosperity depends on our ability to capitalize on the economic opportunities emerging in other markets and given their track record the Liberals and NDP have

Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol make donation to DARE program Gull Lake North Citizens On Patrol (GLNCOP) is a group of volunteers who have been specially trained to serve as the eyes and ears for the Rimbey RCMP in the Gull Lake North area. Formed in 2002, our members work in pairs to actively patrol our lake neighbourhoods in our own vehicles, and notify the Rimbey RCMP should we spot any suspicious activity. While our focus is on the lake neighbourhoods of Sunnyside, Poulsen’s Pasture, Poulsen’s Estates, Parkland Beach, Birch Bay, Birch Meadows, Westlake Estates and Twin Creek Acres, it should be noted that we have on occasion assisted the RCMP with activities in the town of Rimbey as well. GLNCOP is a non-profit organization, and while we do occasionally receive private donations, our operating expenses are covered through one major yearly fundraising event. We accept donations of items from people in the areas we patrol as well folks from all around the lake and Rimbey, and then sell everything at a massive garage sale
held each spring at Johnson’s Farm. The support and popularity of this event has been steadily growing, and this year’s sale proved to be our best ever. Through GLNCOP’s ongoing liaison with the RCMP, we have become aware of Rimbey and area’s growing problems with drugs along with the rise in various crimes directly related to this issue. The Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) program has been conducted by the Rimbey RCMP for many years in Rimbey schools. This program focuses on educating young students about what drugs are, what they look like and their effects. It further provides an opportunity for RCMP officers to interact directly with students in their own school classrooms. Our group’s mandate encourages support of programs and initiatives conducted by our local police authority that develop awareness of crime and crime prevention. This year’s GLNCOP donation of $500 to the DARE program follows an initial similar donation made in 2010.
Dolores Green, president of Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol presents a $500 cheque to Rimbey Const. Larissa Shadforth while Sgt. Mark Groves and Const. Carman Dutz look on. The cheque presentation was made during GLNCOP’s annual general meeting held at the Rimbey Legion. The money is to go to Rimbey RCMP’s DARE program. APN Photo

OCTOBER 5-11, 2014 Ponoka County 403-783-3333
Town of Rimbey Rimbey, AB 403-843-2113
Have a plan and practice it. This plan should include fire drills. A fire drill can help you practice leaving your building quickly and safely. Don’t forget to talk about different ways you can get out.
Bentley, AB 403-748-4044 If there’s a fire that is too big to put out, leave the building immediately. You might not have much time before the fire spreads, so don’t even stop to call 911. Once you’re outside and safe, you can use a cell phone or a neighbor’s phone to call.
When there’s a fire inside your building, you need to get out immediately! Since smoke from a fire can make it difficult to see, it’s important to know the best way to exit the building.
Bentley Agencies 403-748-3977 Do not carelessly discard cigarette butts out of your vehicle’s windows.

If your clothes catch fire, do NOT run. This could make the fire spread more quickly. Instead, stop, drop and roll. In other words, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll back and forth until the fire is put out.

Kraft Hockeyville triumph Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News With Kraft Hockeyville celebrations having come and gone, Graham Parsons, like many Sylvan Lake residents last week, has been suffering from what he calls “Hockeyville withdrawal.” But given the hugely successful manner in which last week’s events unfolded, it’s a state the Sylvan Lake Hockeyville organizing committee chair is more than willing to accept. “Personally, I was blown away by the magnitude of the show,” he said. “We saw it in bits and pieces in how the rink was being prepared, but game day, I thought, was spectacular. “You see all the activity, the professionalism, the cameras, the production, then all of a sudden, the people show up ... and it all hits home. The television coverage, the spectacular shots of the lake — how can you get any better than that?” Last Wednesday’s NHL pre-season game — one half of the town’s grand prize in the Kraft Hockeyville competition — saw the Calgary Flames defeat the Arizona Coyotes
4-3 thanks to a Curtis Glencross overtime winner. And there were plenty of other on-ice highlights that took place both before the game and during its intervals. A $100,000 cheque for arena upgrades — the other half of the Hockeyville grand prize — was presented by Jack Hewitt of Kraft Canada to Parsons, his fellow committee member Steve Dills, and Sylvan Lake mayor Sean McIntyre. Parsons was also presented the official Hockeyville trophy and sweater, which he’ll eventually pass on to next year’s winner. It was all part of a fun-filled day that marked what Parsons feels was an ideal end to the town’s Hockeyville journey. “People are so appreciative, and it was fun,” he said, adding from an organizational perspective, it was “hard work, but it was a labour of love.” But the event’s success wasn’t just down to the hard working committee members, he assured. Rather, there are plenty of people who have gone unmentioned over the past several months that deserve just as much credit, he said.
“We’re proud of the stuff we did, but there’s other people to thank, and that’s everybody,” he said. “There were over 300 volunteers that don’t get the recognition that we get, and there’s a whole community out there that bought in, and we thank them and all the people that voted and showed their support from all over the place, and didn’t get to participate. “We wish everybody could have been in the rink, but people understood, and that was tremendous.” Not everyone needed to be inside to have fun, however. Some who were offered tickets to the game instead chose to remain outside at the viewing party, where they enjoyed musical entertainment by St. James’ Gate and watched the game on a large screen. A morning red carpet arrival by both teams gave local youngsters the chance to meet their hockey heroes — some of whom visited Sylvan Lake schools in the afternoon. CBC personalities Ron MacLean and Don Cherry made an on-ice appearance during the first period intermission, and spoke of their delight at being in Sylvan Lake. “This is Canada,” said Cherry. Rev. John Yoos of Sylvan Lake dropped the ceremonial first puck before dancing his way off the ice — an act that seemed to embody the jubilation felt all around town last week. That, according to Jack Hewitt of Kraft Canada, is what Kraft Hockeyville is all about. “(Sylvan Lake) represents the spirit of Hockeyville over and over,” he said. “It’s all about rebuilding the future of hockey, and keeping the spirit of the game that has been in this community for a 30 years of experience to better serve you long time, whether it’s through the hockey Complete • Partial • Relines • Immediates • Repairs schools or whether it’s through the locals that play either at the major junior level or in the NHL. That’s what you want to see.” Hewitt added the Sylvan Lake Hockeyville committee had been “outstanding to work with,” and commended them on their hard work in the days, weeks and months leading up to the event. Town of Ponoka welcomes new CAO The Town of Ponoka’s Mayor and Council are pleased to announce that Rachel Kunz joined the town as new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Kunz has a degree in mining engineering from the University of Montreal and a certificate in Local Government Administration from the University of Regina. Most recently, she has been the CAO for the Rural Municipality of Sherwood which encompasses the City of Regina and includes a variety of industries from farming and manufacturing to tourism. Prior to that, she worked as administrator for northern Saskatchewan municipalities. “Please join us in welcoming Rachel in her new position as the CAO of the Town of Ponoka,” says Mayor Rick Bonnett. “We believe she will be a great asset to council, the staff and to the town with her previous CAO experience, her strong strategic leadership skills and her great knowledge of the unique issues of northern municipalities.” “I am looking forward to my new respon-
sibilities, and to working alongside council and staff,” says new CAO Rachel Kunz. “I also look forward to putting down roots in the Town of Ponoka and getting to know the community.” “Council was impressed by the number of quality candidates who applied for the position from across Canada,” added Mayor Bonnett. “We are very excited to begin working with her on many of the projects and initiatives that form this Council’s vision for Po-
noka’s future. She is joining an exceptional team of dedicated staff and we are confident she will be a great fit in our organization and our community.” Director of Corporate Services, Betty Quinlan has been working as the acting CAO since January. “We are extremely grateful to Betty for shouldering this big responsibility during a time of transition for the Town of Ponoka,” Bonnett noted. “Betty skillfully stepped into the role, giving council
time to settle into our roles. This enabled us to review the organization, set strategic priorities and determine what we needed in a new, permanent CAO to help guide Town administration.” Rachel Kunz starts in her new position immediately, with Betty Quinlan assisting with the transition. Kunz accompanied council to the annual AUMA Convention in Edmonton last week.

Glittering gala will help to raise funds for Liberty Hall By Treena Mielke A fun filled evening featuring delicious food, great musical entertainment and a live and silent auction is to be the next big fundraiser for the partially completed Liberty Hall. The Glittering Gala, to be held Oct. 18 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, is to include entertainment by country music singer Tracey Millar and a catered meal by Bob Ronnie’s catering. Dariel Sroka, who is co-chairing the event with Karen Boyes said the live auction will have a slight twist to it. One of the tables will actually be auctioned and the top bidder will have an opportunity to sit at that table with friends of choice. At the end of the evening, the person who bought the table will be able to take home all the pieces of silverware and flatware included in the eight-piece setting and the centerpiece. A signed Edmonton Oilers jersey, a signed baseball from Toronto Bluejays and a John Deere child’s wagon full of an assortment of alcohol are some of the items included in
the silent auction. The evening will showcase professional singer/songwriter Tracy Millar who is a well-known entertainer in the Canadian country music scene. For more information about Tracy Millar check out her website at www.tracymillar.ca Tickets will be drawn on a raffle for an Arctic Cat 500 quad, a propane barbecue donated by PenWest and a mini Apple Ipad donated by BDO during the evening. As the name suggests, The Glittering Gala is to be a special evening and everyone is encouraged to dress up for the occasion. Ladies who have a dress or outfit they’ve saved for a special occasion should plan on bringing it out of hiding, said Sroka. “Now’s your chance to dress up and feel and look great for the evening,” she said. The new hall is now at the lock up stage, but plumbing and electrical work is not completed. The original Liberty Hall was
built in 1921 as a temporary structure. Now, almost a century later, the hall remains a busy place, continuing to house many activities, including the ever popular Springdale Players annual dinner theatre. But, even though the dinner theatre is alive and well and other activities including reunions, picnics, dinners and exercise classes are held at the hall, the facility is tired and old. The roof leaks badly, the water and sewer pipes freeze every win-
ter, the kitchen is not up to commercial qualifications and operational costs continue to rise. The hall board has been diligently saving for many years to build a new facility and were most pleased that Ponoka County contributed $140,000 in matching funds for their project. The new hall is on the same site as the original one and is approximately the same size. The old hall will remain operational until the new facility is completely functional.
A new hall is being built on the same site as the original Liberty Hall.

Mike Reilly is a big hit at Rimbey Co-op event By Treena Mielke

There was cause for celebration at Rimbey Co-op last Saturday when the Edmonton Eskimos star quarterback Mike Reilly stopped by to chat it up with the people of Rimbey. “It was great,” said Rimbey Coop general manager Jason Ryden. “He is such a nice guy, very grounded, very friendly.” Perhaps the fact that the Eskimos had defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 24-0, the night before had something to do with the general feeling of celebration that seemed to permeate the crowd, but whatever the reason it was a great day. “It was good timing for us,” said Ryden, who said about 200 to 250 people stopped by. As well as a chance to chat with Reilly, the crowd had an opportunity to win door prizes such as a Grey Cup lamp or to check out the petting zoo brought to the event by Lysbeth Peter, a Rimbey Co-op board mem-
ber. A bouncy castle was also set up for the children to have fun with. Proceeds from a barbecue held during the event went to Rimbey Kids In Sports. The Rimbey Co-op partnered with Federated Co-op to bring Mike Reilly to Rimbey as part of the Game Day promotion. The Co-op has expanded its Game Day Approved product line and has partnered with the Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Specially branded products are available in Co-op food stores, home centres and gas bars across the prairies. A portion of proceeds from Game Day Approved products supports children’s hospital foundations in Western Canada which adds to the Co-op’s commitment to contribute $5 million to the five children’s hospital foundations in Western Canada.

Booking bands for parades can be a difficult task By June Norvila

Antique Vehicle Section: Cars and Best Overall - 1929 Model A coup of Terry Raymond; Truck - John Parson’s 1929 Model AA; Farm Machinery - Leonard Skjonsberg’s 1951 Model Z Minni MoThe Penhold Cadet Marching Band marched in the Bentley Parade for line tractor; Classic Car - Harvey Rue’s 1955 Ford the last time, as they no longer have a summer camp in Penhold. Crown Royal; Classic Truck - Derek Dickau with June Norvila Photo the Bentley Ag Society float. Best Decorated Bikes, Trikes, Vehicles - Bentley Minor Baseball. Pet Section - Alberta Donkey and Mule Club. Novelty (no horses): the wagons and quads of Dave Hueppelsheuser and Al Watson. Parade announcer at the downtown midway point was Mark Smale from Eckville. Butcher is hoping someone else will take over as parade convener. She says, “Someone else will have to take it over (planning and organizing the parade and all that goes with it) in the next couple of years, but no one wants to do it. Butcher would be a very hard act to follow. She has all the contacts and the expertise of years of experience!  She also helps out with the rodeo. 14101DA0 The parade was started back around 1963 by the Sunset Hills Riding Club and has been going ever since. “It has only been rained out once in memory, and then it was cancelled and rescheduled for the next day, but that didn’t work out, said Butcher, so now the parade goes on the scheduled day rain or shine.
JoAnn Butcher, the Bentley parade convener for many years, was satisfied with the result this year.  “There were less dignitaries in cars,â€? she says, “but that is okay sometimes.â€? This year many of the parade entrants tried to tie in with the theme picked by the Bentley & District Agricultural Society - Salute to the Bentley District Fire Department. This year an added bonus to the approximately forty minute parade was having two marching bands instead of the customary one. “Bands are hard to book,â€? Butcher says, “as many are closed down for August, or are too busy already, or are too expensive for Bentley.â€? She is already looking for next year. Donations helped the Sunset Hills Riding Club, the ones who sponsor the parade, with the cost. For 2014 Butcher was able to confirm the 30-member Rocky Mountain Marching Pipe Band from a summer camp west of Cochrane that came last year, as well as a 60-member Penhold Cadet Marching Band that had come a number of different times in past years. It will be their last time here because the Penhold cadet camp has been closed down and next year cadets are going to a camp in British Columbia instead. RCMP in their red serge led off the parade. Alberta Downs race horses hooked to their sulkies were an added colorful feature, as were the Electric Strides Drill Team from Red Deer astride their pink sparkling decorated mounts. A lot of the usual parade entrants were back. Collecting candy along the parade route remains a draw for the youngsters. Volunteer judges that Butcher had lined up, again picked their favorite entries in various categories at the parade’s assembly point by the curling rink. Judged Best Overall parade entry was the Bentley Beauty Salon. Section winners are listed below. Local singer/songwriter to hold concert at United Church By Treena Mielke Debbie Bergeron, a Rimbey singer/ songwriter is back by popular demand. The talented musician will perform at the United Church in Rimbey Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. bringing to her audience a delightful selection of country gospel music. Last year, Bergeron’s Tender Country Christmas concert held at the United Church was a huge hit. “I had many people ask me when I was coming back and it inspired me to do
this (upcoming) show,” she said. “And I love country gospel.” Bergeron said the country gospel music reminds her of the tiny church she attended as a child. While the message was always powerful and inspiring, it was the music that continued to draw her back. This year, Bergeron will be accompanied by a three-piece band including pianist Audrey Graham, Delfina Villacorta, on base guitar and Doug Norman

The songwriter/recording artist/producer, who moved to Rimbey from Hope, B.C. two years ago is excited to be part of the central Alberta music scene. Since moving to Rimbey she has been busy, and has slowly, but surely become a well-known name in the country music industry.

DeWitt June 24, 1928 - Sept. 28, 2014
RESTA Rilda Jane Leslie Resta (nee DeWalt) of Red Deer, Alberta, formerly of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the age of 75 years. Rilda was a beautiful person with grace, class, and an intelligent nature. She had a wonderful sense of humour along with a giving and compassionate heart. Rilda offered a sense of fairness and expected equality for all. She was tender and gentle, but firm. However, she did have a ‘Mama Bear’ side to her. Rilda was hugely committed to her family, and was a doting grandmother and great grandma to many children, always making time for telling or reading a story. Her grandchildren brought great joy and happiness to her life. Rilda was a very social person and made people feel welcome. It seemed the coffee pot was always on with fresh baking just out of the oven. More often than not, these coffee times led to an upcoming mealtime. Her family was blessed to have a full table with always more than enough to eat. Rilda was always an extremely creative individual. She loved to read, garden, sew (the grandchildren grumbled if their pajamas were not sewn by Grandma), knit, crochet, and many forms of painting. She painted rocks, with many folks having one or two in their gardens. Thinking back, Rilda’s favourite painting was with no paint... just a tiny artist’s brush on the bare backs of her granchildren as they lay across her lap... imagining that the scene they had requested was exactly the one that Grandma was painting! Rilda also loved to bake and cook. Through the years, she designed and decorated many a wedding cake for couples from near and far, and was tagged the ‘Wedding Cake Lady’ by many. Rilda always endeavoured to support the activities her children were involved in, which led her to become the first-known female president of a Minor Hockey Association. Along with raising her family and working so very hard on the farm, Rilda also worked full time in town for Robinson’s Stores and became the store manager. A quote from a granddaughter: “Grandma was a rare gem among all the jewels, and I am privileged to call her my Grandma.” “Our family gives thanks that Mom is in the arms of her Heavenly Father.” Rilda will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her beloved husband of 56 years, Silvio; her two sons, Silvio Jr. (Laurie) Resta; and Jordan (Mary) Resta, both of Red Deer; and her four daughters, JoAnne (Wilfred) Curtis of Red Deer; Judy (John) Ring of Hinton; Jacquie Sullivan of Red Deer; and Karen (Ed) Yetter of Blackfalds; as well as 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her brother, Wilson DeWalt of Williams Lake, B.C.; and five sisters: Isla Miller of Edson; Ella Anderson of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Frances Courtney of Warren, Manitoba; Sharon (Jim) Potter of Likely, B.C.; and June (Adolf) Lehman of Chase, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Rilda was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Ethel; four brothers: Charles, Mickey, Clinton, and Kenny; and two sisters: Dorothy Miller and Ethel Balon. A Celebration of Rilda’s Life was held at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 18 Selkirk Boulevard, Red Deer on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Don Hennig and Pastor Peter Van Katwyk officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Interment will follow at a later date in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Rilda’s Memory may be made directly to Loaves and Fishes School Lunch Program, 6002 - 54 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4M8; or to the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter, Box 561, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 5G1. Condolences to the Family may also be expressed by email to: special_reflections@telusplanet.net Service and Cremation Arrangements for the Late Rilda Jane Leslie Resta (nee DeWalt) entrusted to the care of OBERHAMMER FUNERAL CHAPELS Rimbey, AB. 1-403-843-4445

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, and Great Great Grandma on September 28, 2014 at the age of 86 years. Mary was born on June 24, 1928 in Edmonton, Alberta. She married Bernard DeWitt in 1950 and resided in Wetaskiwin Alberta, where they had three children, Robert, Donna and Clayton. They transferred to Red Deer with North Western Utilities in 1966, and then moved to the Bluffton area in 1971. That farm became the hub of the DeWitt family making many, many memories. Mary was predeceased by her grandson Kelly DeWitt in 1970, her husband Bernard DeWitt in 2001, her son Robert DeWitt in 2009 and her daughter-in-law Jennifer DeWitt in 2011. She is survived by her daughter Donna Keay of Rimbey, her son Clayton (Sue) DeWitt of Rimbey, her grandchildren Tanya DeWitt of Rimbey, Stacey (Joe) Reck, Donivan (Ellen) McCoy, Shauna (Terry) Meinema all of Marwayne, Alberta. Her great grandchildren Brad (Natasha) Harris, of Lloydminster, Saskatchewn, Jessie (Tanner) Sayer, Jaici Thomson, Cameron Thomson, Skylar McCoy, all of Marwayne and Kayl McCoy of Leduc. And her two great great grandsons Clay Sayer and Kason Harris. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Church of the Nazarene in Rimbey. If friends desire donations can be made to the Parkland Manor Seniors Club.

By Treena Mielke It took several diets, continual cycles of denial and self directed criticism and a weight problem that had spiraled to 300 pounds that finally brought Beth to the realization she needed help. “I was 300 pounds and had serious healthy issues like high blood pressure and borderline diabetes. I knew I was very much overweight, but I thought I would just be fat and happy. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working. Not only did she feel miserable, her health was in jeopardy, and slowly getting worse. Beth was at a point in her life when she was almost resigned to the fact she may have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair if she could not get her obesity under control. It was during one of those dark days when all hope seemed to be lost that a friend recommended Food Addicts in recovery anonymous. Beth made the choice to attend a meeting just to see what it was all about. It was a choice that changed her life. Beth has been a member of Food Addicts in recovery anonymous for 10 years. During that time her weight has returned to a healthy number, her self-esteem has been restored and physically she looks and feels great. “My doctor told me I had the blood pressure of a teenage boy after a nap,” she said with a pleased chuckle. Mary’s story is similar, but different. Growing up with an over-
weight mother who became her eating buddy, an unhealthy pattern of rejection and acceptance began early in her life. “Although we ate together I felt criticized and pitied for my obesity.” Mary eventually married and had three children, but her addiction to food never left her. “I could control food for awhile, but would always go back to overeating. I lost and gained over 80 pounds three times.” After embarking on her own journey of weight loss methods, she, too, finally took her 230-pound self to a Food Addicts in recovery anonymous meeting. She has never looked back. Being addicted to a food is a disease that can slowly kill you, Beth said. “Obesity is rampant and it can be a horrible, slow death.” Food Addicts in recovery anonymous is a program based on the 12 steps of Alcoholism Anonymous. There are no dues, fees or weigh-ins at the meetings. It is a fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience and mutual support, are recovering from the disease of food addiction. FA is open to men and women of all ages. Members include those who have been obese, or under eaters, bulimic, or so obsessed with food or weight they cannot focus on anything else. People who have weighed as little as 62 pounds or as much as 400 pounds, and others who have been of normal weight, but are obsessed with food or
dieting have joined. FA members have usually joined the program after trying a number of other solutions, none of which have been successful. The program allows members to use the 12-steps, work with a sponsor and turn over their eating problems to a higher power. “It’s simple, but it’s not always easy,” said Beth. It’s disciplined and the meetings are a lifeline.” In an article about her struggle with food addiction Mary wrote: “I am grateful for the fellowship and for this pattern for living. I am thankful for a loving and disciplined sponsor, who dares to speak her truth so I might find mine. I am now very present and available for my family, no longer focusing all my attention on food.” In the long-term, many FA members have maintained their normal weights and found freedom from their obsession with food. For more information about FA contact 403-843-4570. Meetings are held in Rimbey on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the New Life Fellowship Church. Meetings are also held in Red Deer and Lacombe. To find other meetings visit the website at www.foodaddicts.org

Debbie Bergeron Continued from Page 16 For Bergeron, who began singing at the age of four when her aunt Norma set up her amp and microphone in the centre of the living room and encouraged the little girl to sing, writing songs and singing is as natural as breathing. She writes from the heart. “I write what I feel,” she said. She recorded her debut CD called ‘Makin A Connecion’ in Nashville in 1998 at the Gatlin Brothers Studio. “It was a dream come true to go to Nashville, but I was only dipping my toes in the water. I thought it would be my only shot.” Much to her delight, The CD did well, especially in the European country music charts. Her second CD, She Drives, produced by Mesh Studios in Burnaby, B.C. received rave reviews in Canada and European countries and was nominated for Album of the Year through the British Columbia Country Music Association. Throughout her career, Bergeron has received several nominations in British Columba and in Nashville from the Entertainer Indi-Association and has twice won the award as Country Gospel Performer of the Year with British Columbia Country Music Association. In November 2005 she performed at the famous Bluebird Café and the Gibson Theatre in Opryland. Most recently she has performed at the Blackfalds Country Gospel weekend, at Ivan Daines Country Picnic, at the Mountain Shadow Music Festival and was in the lineup for the Men and Women of Country Music held in Hoadley. She will entertain at a Christmas Concert at Rimbey Manor later this year. Her music is truly a gift from God, said Bergeron, adding it gives her great pleasure to share her talent with others knowing she has touched someone’s life in a positive way. “It gives me joy,” she said.

Passport to Christmas fast approaching It is that time of year again to prepare our Passport to Christmas. Over the past year networking with other Chambers and learning their secrets, the Rimbey Chamber will be changing and refining some of our current projects, as well as adding new ones. In order to meet the costs of managing and producing these projects; we are adding participation fees to some projects. The Passport to Christmas is one of them. Over the last two years, about 750 passports were stamped and turned in showing $225,000 was spent in Rimbey between November 15 and December 20, 2013. It is obvious that the Passport to Christmas program has been a very successful shop local program for businesses and consumers. The Chamber would like to see this program continue to succeed and grow even bigger. Your participation is important for this program to grow. The cost of participation is $78 for members and $125 for non members, plus tax. Your logo and/ or name will appear on the front of the passport, indicating to the shopper who is participating. Each passport turned in is checked for completeness and only passports stamped by participating businesses will be entered in our draw. The program will run from November 10 – December 19, 2014. With enough participation, we will be able to do a big advertising blitz to kick off this event and attract shoppers from surrounding communities. The deadline to get your name in is October 15, 2014. If you have any questions please contact Carrie Vaarstra, office administrator at 403-392-6521.
