itchen Manager David Chen trained under Chef Jack at the Pacific Academy of Culinary Arts and told me that his cooking style is fusion; he loves to experiment with different cultural dishes and put his unique spin on them, but his baking style is French. For desert, he offered me a selection of French macaroons accompanied by his new summer creation; Summer Breeze. The macaroons were delicious. The first one I tried was called a salty caramel and it was delightful. It started off with a subtle flavor which grew and flourished in my mouth. The salty

flavor came almost an afterthought as the delicious treat melted in my mouth. David explained to me that most of the food and pastries prepared here are made from scratch and are free from additives. He told me with pride that the croissants, a signature item, are made with real butter. In fact absolutely none of his bakery items are made with margarine. It’s butter all the way! He let me sample a croissant and I could see what he meant. The croissant was light as a feather and very buttery in flavour.

They serve four different kinds including ham and Swiss cheese, chocolate, almond and plain. I took a plain and an almond one home, my husband doesn’t usually like croissants, but he proclaimed this was the best he had ever tasted and asked when I was going to pick up some more. The restaurant serves a nice variety of soups and sandwiches that are all made from scratch. The portions are huge and one sandwich could easily serve two people. - Lilliane Fuller 604.534.0630

atnam Randhawa. had a dream of turning the 100 year old rundown “Spy Castle” building into a thriving pub. But when Satnam was killed in a car accident while on a charity trip to India in 2008, his plans came to a sudden halt. His family wanted to bring their fathers dream to completion, so in November 2009 the doors to Baron’s Manor Pub opened, and Satnam’s dream was finally realized. The old Henry Kells property was known as the “Spy Castle” after it was purchased by Baron Carl von Mackensen in the early 1900’s and a turreted castle-like tower

was built on the south side. The house was notorious for its lavish parties and residents grew suspicious that Von Mackensen was a German spy. Allegedly, an underground tunnel was built from the home to the Fraser River and a radio room was located at the top of the tower for Von Mackensen to communicate with German ships off the Vancouver coast. The Canadian government agreed with local suspicions, and Von Mackensen was interned at a camp in Vernon during the First World War and eventually deported back to Germany in 1919. Brothers Sarb and

The 66th Avenue location in Langley opened 10 years ago and the Walnut Grove opened in 2008, so we have been a part of the Langley community for a long time! There are several places that customers can purchase smoothies; however, what sets Booster Juice apart is the quality of our ingredients and the ability for our customers to customize their smoothies. Most of our smoothies contain 3 – 5.5 servings of fruit and/or vegetables. The

Veggie smoothies which were recently added to our menu are fast becoming customer favorites! An added benefit is that any of our smoothies can be made dairy free and we have several gluten free snacks as well. The “Boost” in Booster Juice is the added nutritional or herbal supplement you can choose to add to your smoothie. People love adding a bit of Energy if they need a boost or a Warrior to help fight off those colds. We don’t just sell smoothies! We sell tasty paninis and wraps as well, which when combined with a smoothie make a great meal. We also have unique products such as wheatgrass shots and a rather exotic Brazil-

ian treat called Acai Na Tigela. It is important to us to be a part of the local community and we are proud to offer fundraising vouchers for school, community groups or non-profit groups looking to raise money. Therefore we offer a program in which groups pay just $3.75 per voucher (a voucher can be redeemed for a Regular smoothie) and sell them for a suggested price of $5.00 so that your fundraising group can make $1.25 profit per coupon sold. That’s a 33% return so the funds add up quickly. We are going mobile and are excited about our new Booster Juice truck which can be booked for your next event.

Jim’s Pizza S

hawn Anderson started work for Jim’s Pizza as a delivery driver. He later began learning how to create pizzas of the quality customers would expect when ordering from Jim’s. After six years of experiencing the quality – starting with daily operation – the previous owner presented Shawn with the opportunity to take over the business as he was looking to relocate. Shawn says the key to Jim's Pizza success is the belief that their customers deserve more than just a pizza. Like any great recipe there are a few key elements to combine in order to stand apart from the rest. Jim’s Pizza makes every pizza fresh starting with rolling out dough for each order, not just saucing pre-stretched dough and adding toppings. Shawn believes customers deserve quality. However food quality is only part of the equation at Jim’s. They understand that, even though you might be dining in your own home or work place, customer service needs to be

friendly and efficient as well. After all that’s what customers expect when they go out for a meal. Shawn feels the keys to a successful restaurant are great food, a friendly staff and a reasonable cost. So, what sets Jim’s Pizza apart from other pizza joints? Shawn says the most successful way to create a long term customer to offer the quality of food you would only provide for your family and close friends. At Jim’s they welcome customers as if they were long-term neighbours and not just another customer. Although it takes longer to prepare everyone’s order, Shawn believes each order needs to be made to order. After all, if you wanted a prepared meal, our local grocers have plenty of selection in the frozen food isle. “Food is a work of art, and can only be truly enjoyed when the person preparing it has a passion,” says Shawn. “We believe in using quality ingredients including using real bacon and not an imitation.
