Wood has had a lifelong commitment to supporting, managing, coaching and volunteering in youth sports, including: b oxing,

hockey, baseball, football and rugby. As a former city councillor, Wood says he brings recognized and seasoned experience in working with a functioning mayor and council, and effectively getting the job done. Wood invites residents to contact him with questions, and thoughts on issues of concern within the community. Wood intends to

open a campaign office and the location will be confirmed next week. C onstituents will have the opportunity to have a coffee and discussion with Wood who is encouraging everyone to get out and vote. “In 2011, just 22 per cent of the eligible voters in Campbell River participated in the election for mayor and councillors,” Wood says. “Only 38 votes

Shaw van fire lights up street MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Late last Thusday morning, a Shaw Cable installer looked out the window of the house at which he was working to see his work van going up in flames. The fire originated behind the driver’s seat, according to Campbell River Fire Department Chief Ian Baikie, but beyond that, Shaw will likely need to hire a forensic expert to determine an exact cause. “There were a number of aftermarket electrical components in there,” Baikie said, but because of the extent of the damage, it is beyond the capabilities of the department to determine exactly what went wrong to cause the conflagration. “I have good reason to believe that Shaw is going to look at their fleet,” he said, “since they probably have hundreds of these vans with similar wiring situations.” Baikie said that although many people have aftermarket electronics in their vehicles, such as stereos and additional lights, this kind of event isn’t a situation he would warn the public about.

“It’s not a common fire,” he said, “so there are much more productive messages I would have for the public in terms of fire safety,” he said, such as ensuring your residence has functioning smoke alarms, being diligent and atten-

cord use, before he would put out a warning about free-standing electrical systems in vehicles that could cause fires like this one. No one was injured in the fire, and no property, other than the van itself and its contents, were damaged.

Mayor distances himself from CHOICE council candidates KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The group of candidates running for city council in November’s civic election was assembled by Mayor Walter Jakeway, but the mayor says he’s running independent of the group. “I’m not formally a part of it, I’m just the guy who made the contact,” Jakeway said.

The mayor said earlier this year he started getting phone calls from people interested in running for city council. Jakeway said it quickly became evident who had the same ideologies and could work well together and he directed them to each other. What emerged was CHOICE, a group of five candidates – Bob Bray, David Christian, Mar-

cia McKay, Jim Parnell and Jos Krynen who has withdrawn from the city council race. Jakeway said while he admires CHOICE, it’s not his group. “They run independent of me but I respect them,” he said. “It’s neat that a bunch of people who didn’t know each other can come together and are functioning well together.” CHOICE candidate McKay said Jakeway has been a valuable asset to the group but was quick to add that the candidates have been doing their own research. “Mayor Jakeway has been kind enough to meet with the members of CHOICE over the summer to help us consider our candidacy and to give us his perspective on the issues,” McKay said. “We have done our homework and researched voting his-

the budget for 2013. “As for spending, CHOICE is very careful with money and would be very careful with tax dollars,” McKay added. “For example, we are collaborating on the cost

tories, positions taken, attendance at meetings, and responsiveness to local issues and special interest groups.” McKay said while CHOICE does not always think the same way as Jakeway, the group does believe what Jakeway has been saying for the past three years – that council needs to get a better hold on its finances. “We don’t always agree with Mayor Jakeway, or with each other for that matter, but we do agree that council can lower taxes without lowering services,” McKay said. Jakeway is promising a 15 per cent reduction of property taxes over three years but he needs the support of council to do so. “If you’ve got people who agree with you on finances then you can live up to your promises,” said Jakeway who added that he believes CHOICE has a similar philosophy as him when it comes to city finances. McKay said, like Jakeway, CHOICE is questioning some of the expenditures council has approved in recent years.

CHOICE candidate withdraws One of the group of CHOICE candidates running for city councillor is withdrawing from the council race. Jos Krynen, who runs Eagle Eye Adventures with his wife and is the president of Krynen Holdings Ltd., is being forced to drop his election campaign. “It is with a great deal of disappointment that I

must announce that I am withdrawing my name as a candidate for election to city council,” Krynen said in a release. “While I am a permanent resident of Canada, I was unable to obtain my official Canadian Citizenship in time for the November 15 municipal election.” Kr ynen moved to Campbell River from the Netherlands where

he worked as a successful denturist. He also has a diploma in Marine Biology and he serves on the St. John Ambulance board. Krynen extends his appreciation to everyone who has supported his bid for council. “I would like to thank all of my supporters for their encouragement, and assure them that they can rely on my CHOICE

colleagues (Bob Bray, David Christian, Jim Parnell, and Marcia McKay) to do what is right for Campbell River,” Krynen said. “I will be pursuing my formal Citizenship, continuing to champion Campbell River internationally, and keeping a close eye on local government. SD72 hard-pressed to cut costs MIKE DAVIES

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Cost-saving in the face of increasing expenses is causing some stress for the Campbell River School District (SD72). At last week’s meeting of the board of trustees, the district’s Manager of Operations Steve Woods spoke on the work that they’ve been doing over the past year, highlighting his concern about cost-cutting and efficiency options coming to the end of what is realistically possible. Increases in utility rates and transportation costs are his “worry spots,” he said. “A lot of the lowesthanging fruit has been picked,” he said, in terms of cost savings. “Going forward, it’s going to be increasingly challenging to deliver those savings to offset things like rate increases.” The district re-tendered its fuel purchas-

ing contracts this past spring, according to Woods, from which it should see some savings in transportation costs, but it’s going to be difficult to make more spending cuts to operations and facilities, rates are going nowhere but up, and existing infrastructure continues to age. With a $1.2-million budget, maintenance and operations is approximately 17 per cent of the SD72 overall budget, last year it went way over that in regards to expenditures, Woods said. The roof leak on Georgia Park Elementary was a big part of that. Woods said it ended up costing upwards of $230,000 and was a completely unforeseen expense. It also didn’t help that Robron’s boiler needed to be replaced at a cost of approximately $60,000, Woods told the board. The seismic upgrades

to L’Ecole Phoenix Middle School are almost finished, which means phase one of the seismic upgrades project is almost complete, and puts the district well ahead of many in terms of completing those upgrades. It is also expected to come in well under budget, according to Woods. He’s hoping to transfer those savings into developing the Pinecrest Elementary seismic upgrade plan during phase two of the district’s upgrades, and cover the cost of that project. The b oard commended Woods on all his team’s work creating cost-saving and longterm sustainability measures, using SD72’s win at the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce Business Awards of Distinction for Environmental Sustainability to highlight his efforts. “He is certainly a huge

part of that award,” said board Chair Michele Babchuck. “Although the school district itself and the board has put policies and initiatives in place through the strategic planning process, it is the work of gentlemen like Mr. Woods that bring those home.” As an aside, SD72 also took home the award for Diversity Leadership at the Business Awards of Distinction held Sept. 27 at the Tidemark Theatre. “I believe it was the work of the last board, under the chair of Helen Moats, that put the diversity policy into place that has infiltrated through our whole organization,” Babchuck said, “and it’s because of our senior management and staff members that live within our organization. I could not be any more proud to stand up there and accept those two awards on behalf of our school district.”

Experts’ Advice Do I have to buy insurance on a car loan?

By getting immunized, you’ll help protect yourself and others and reduce the spread of the influenza virus.

Insurance on a car loan Garat Financial is not mandatory. If you purchased someInvestment you should have been asked to sign a disclosure document that Darlene Garat Financial Advisor explains this fact. Unlike a lot of insurance paperwork, this form is quite simple and clear. Ideally, if you have adequate coverage set up with your financial advisor, any loan payments – or balances owing for that matter – should be covered. You are better served owning individual disability coverage and life insurance, so everything is covered – not just your car payment.

Who should get the vaccine?

Ask the Experts

• Children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. • Pregnant women who will be in their third trimester during the Victor Choo influenza season Pharmacist/Owner • Seniors 65 years and older • Residents of any age living in residential care, assisted living or other group facilities • Children and adults with chronic medical condition • Household contacts and caregivers for high risk patients • Health care providers Come down to Peoples Drug Mart and check out our upcoming flu clinics. City Councillor Ron Kerr is running for reelection. Kerr officially announced his decision this week, saying he is dedicated to growing Campbell River. “ T h o u g h C a mp bell River is presently exploding with new construction and vitality, it is important to assure that our growth reflects our values and that we get the most out of our tax dollar,” Kerr said. “Meaningful management of growth opportunities, working together with industry, being considerate of economic, social and environmental considerations is at the forefront of my decisionmaking.” Kerr says creating a safe environment within the community has been a particular focus for him and cites acquiring the extreme weather shelter for the city’s homeless, and improving sidewalks and accessibility throughout the city as examples. Kerr said throughout his term on council he has championed several important local issues, including the growing number of seniors being attracted to Campbell River. “I wholeheartedly support our seniors and

Our View

Social media already plays a role in election Facebook and other social media have played supporting roles in the last few elections, but the 2014 municipal election may be the first where We say: Beware they can be seen to have a direct effect on what you read on the outcome. It’s already had a direct effect on one the Internet young aspirant to the mayor’s chair in another community, who declared his intention to run Friday morning and withdrew Friday evening, after some inappropriate Facebook posts he made last

year came to light. That’s a lesson learned for the young man, and one way social media has already affected the outcome of the Nov. 15 municipal election. There will certainly be others. People are talking about the change they want to see in politics using these platforms, which is a good thing and will make them a force on Nov. 15. Still, watching the discussion on social media, you see how often opinion gets substituted for fact, and how fast discussions get hijacked or devolve into personal attacks and other forms of abuse. The lesson here for voters, as social media becomes ever-

more a source of political information free from checks and balances, is to do your own research. As with all information that comes your way in life, fact-check and examine the source supplying it before deciding if it’s reliable, especially when using it to decide where to make your mark on a ballot. Most importantly, never vote based on someone else’s beliefs and judgements. Learn to separate opinion from fact, and remember that even the most well-meaning people may be sharing inaccurate information. -Black Press

Vacant building bylaw weak I note that Public Nuisance By-law 3310, as amended, is scheduled for third and final reading. I understand (city) staff is recommending that the vacant building registration and permit requirement be deferred. Disappointing. I have read the proposed sections dealing with vacant premises. And while remedial action for failure to comply is impressive, I don’t understand what constitutes a failure. In my opinion, continuing to use the words ‘nuisance’, ‘unsightly’, ‘danger’ and ‘inconvenience’ to describe vacant buildings is far too subjective and open to interpretation. Cities such as Brandon and Winnipeg use wording in their by-laws and brochures that more precisely defines an unsightly, inconvenient nuisance. I see nothing in this amended by-law to encourage or compel the owners of 2522 and 2532 S. Island Highway to improve the condition of their properties. In fact, it appears that enforcement with regard to ‘garage sale’ signs will be far more stringent than that of derelict buildings. On a slippery slope for B.C. communities

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

Every year when B.C.’s municipal politicians get together to preach to the provincial cabinet, there comes a point in the maze of resolutions where things go sideways. Last year it was a misinformed, impossible demand to ban all traces of genetic engineering. Before that they thumbed their mobile phones and denounced wireless power meters. Both votes passed by narrow margins in a half-empty chamber, with many delegates focused on the serious community issues they are elected to address. This year it was a charge led by Burnaby to denounce the proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion. And this time it was defeated. Credit for this sudden attack of

common sense goes largely to North Cowichan Coun. Al Siebring. Here’s part of his address to the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are elected to handle things like roads and water and sewer and land use, police, fire, garbage. We’re not here to talk about social policy, child poverty or heaven forbid, pipelines. “Those kinds of things dilute our credibility as an organization. We’re becoming a social policy activist group rather than a group of municipal politicians.” Burnaby, New Westminster, Victoria and Vancouver were undeterred. In taxrich urban centres one can make a living at local politics. And grandstanding works. Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow repeated

the protester myth that a new pipeline would introduce diluted bitumen to the coast. Trans Mountain started shipping dilbit in the late 1980s. Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and others from along the Interior pipeline route pointed out another flaw. If southern cities want to wander outside their mandate to make this gesture, why target only this pipeline and ignore rail lines and highways that cross the same rivers and streams? Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan boasted that after his first court challenge to the National Energy Board was tossed out, his high-priced eco-lawyer found a constitutional angle. Cha-ching! The comedy of all this was illustrated by Coun. Robin Cherbo from Nelson,

who assured delegates he uses synthetic oil in his vehicle. Is that derived from organic sunflowers? And what significance does that gesture have compared with the gasoline and jet fuel that carried 1,200 delegates to Whistler? This is why election-time posturing by local politicians is a slippery slope. Not only do they lack authority, they and their staff lack the required expertise and information. The Trans Mountain pipeline starts in Alberta and branches into the U.S. It is by definition federal jurisdiction. Municipal politicians should pipe down and defend their own performance. Businesswoman to run for council

A long-time Campbell River businesswoman is running for a spot on city council. Marlene Wright, who moved with her family to Campbell River from Toronto because of life style and opportunity, sees a bright future for the city. “Today we are blessed with two ongoing major projects – BC Hydro’s John Hart dam and the new hospital. This gives us a limited time to build the future,” Wright says. “The Seymour Pacific head office, the First Nations projects, Berwick and the Comfort Inn promote much pride, growth and attention for Campbell River. We have many young, skilled professionals who will help shape the future of Campbell River and I support their goals. This is a very positive sign.” Wright and her husband, Al, relocated to Campbell River after purchasing the city’s former Beaver Lumber franchise. She says that raising her three children in this vibrant, growing community was magical for them. Her passion and commitment for this community led her to get involved with the Salmon Kings Swim Club, Killer Whales and Swim B.C. at the executive level. The Wrights sold Beaver Lumber and later purchased Work World. At this time, Wright ventured into financial planning and investment management with Investors Group and later Scotiabank where she gained invaluable experience as investment advisor

for six Vancouver Island branches before joining her husband and daughter Sydney in the Work World family business. Wright says her experiences are essential for leadership which she plans to use to market Campbell River. “We must provide a positive image of our city to our residents and the outside world. Lead by example,” Wright says. “I will plan, prepare and execute for a great future for Campbell River.” Wright is also committed to stimulating the economy. “I will support economic development so young families can make a good living in Campbell River,” Wright says. “This is imperative to the sustainability of our city. Young families are coming – we need many more.” Wright knows how important it is to attract families that want to play a role in the community. The Wrights themselves were members of the Chamber of Commerce, a sponsor of the Storm

hockey team, other local sport teams, theatre and the successful Fashion Inferno shows since the beginning. Wright says she is also a proud Rotarian and past president. “Rotary has done so much for our community: the Sea Walk, Splash Park, outdoor pool, and now the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge,” she says. Wright has also fundraised for Cops for Cancer and Relay for Life. In June, the Wrights sold Work World. “I now have time to use my experience, passion and commitment to help make this a more sustainable city,” Wright says. “We hear so often ‘everyone is leaving Campbell River. There is nothing here for our future.’ For a future, we must bury that myth. Gandhi said ‘You must be the change you want to see in the world.’”

If elected, Wright is adamant that: n She will work to protect the lifestyle that the people of Campbell River enjoy. n She will encourage efficient use of our natural resources. She says the city’s waterfront, abundant resources, supply of quality water and surrounding resources are very important for the future and the city needs more development but to be vigilant in how it’s done. n The city provide better services for seniors. n All of our citizens are entitled to be concerned about taxes. As a council we need to manage taxes in an efficient manner. “Exercise your right to vote. Vote the Wright way,” says Wright who can be reached at 778-4201106 or at: vote.marlene. wright@gmail.com

Quality Foods continues to earn national recognition from its peers in the grocery business Last week in Toronto, Quality Foods founding partners John Briuolo, Ken Schley and Noel Hayward were presented the prestigious Life Member Award from the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG). According to the CFIG, the designation is awarded to a grocer who has demonstrated a commitment to the industry through their work, community involvement and CFIG activities. Also last week at the CFIG’s Independent Grocer of the Year Awards, Quality Foods Parksville’s entry into the Master Merchandiser Awards was the judge’s favourite in the medium store category, winning the gold across Canada. An Atlantic Canada independent in the large surface category edged them out for the Platinum as best overall in all categories. Kevin Foote, QF Parksville assistant store manager, submitted the winning entry, which featured creative and customer-focused displays and community involvement, highlighting the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sandsculpting Competition. “A lot of people work very hard to make sure the store is a great place to shop and be a helpful part of our Parksville community,” said Foote. “To have their work recognized in this way acknowledges that what we do every day makes a difference.” Added Parksville store manager Randy Henson: “The important thing for us though is that our customers have a great shopping experience each time they come in our store. That’s what’s gold to us. I guess it’s part of our culture in how we do business, and it means a lot to everyone in the stores when the industry takes notice.” In addition, Qualicum Foods received a Platinum Achievement Award for 10 consecutive years of various CFIG awards since the original store was rebuilt in 2004 after fire destroyed the original store. The store also earned a rare spot in the Canadian Independent Grocer of the Year Hall of Fame. The honour was accepted by the trio of founding partners. Quality Foods in Courtenay’s Driftwood Mall received a Diamond Pin Achievement Award as a result of receiving awards for each year they have been eligible. All 11 eligible QF stores received an Award of Merit from judges who visited all applicants across all Canadian provinces and territories. The CFIG says the Independent Grocer of the Year Awards program is designed to recognize outstanding Canadian Grocers based on a rigorous evaluation performed from the consumer’s perspective. Held in conjunction with Grocery Innovations Canada, the premier grocery trade show for Canada’s grocery industry, the Independent Grocer of the Year Awards program recognizes excellence in grocery retailing among independents. Hundreds of grocery stores nationwide competed in this year’s program. For more about the awards and the CFIG, visit www.cfig.ca.

Wine festival returns

North Island College Tourism and Hospitality students encourage you to get your Wine Festival tickets early this year. The popular event returns with a Great Gatsby-themed party on Nov. 14 at the Campbell River campus’ Third Course Bistro. Sample more than 150 regional wines, a selection of beer from Vancouver Island Brewery, and hors d’oeuvres. Learn to pair wine and cheese with informative seminars, enjoy live music, a silent auction, door prizes, and more. Campbell River residents can get home safely with complimentary driver services. All proceeds support the Tourism and Hospitality Management students. Tickets are $55 and are available at the Merecroft Village Liquor Store, Royal Coachman Liquor Store, and Riptide Pub as well as from the NIC bookstore. For more information, visit www.nic.bc.ca

D. ROSS McDONALD October 1, 2014

In loving memory

In this great forest of life, in the tree of McDONALD, the branch of my dad has broken off. Rest in peace Dad. Dad passed away this morning at C.R. Hospital. He was well taken care of for the last six weeks by the wonderful staff there. Pain is gone now. Cancer has affected many of us, and now has claimed another good person. Ross was born in Wapella SK, July 22 1937. He was the third son of 5 children; all boys from Thelma (Knowles) McDonald and Jimmy McDonald. Ross quit school early to join the Canadian Royal Air Force. After 3 years, he decided to move on, and found himself in Campbell River, B.C. He had many relatives here in town and married a young woman named Sharon Berger. They had one son, Paul McDonald. Ross got a job at the local pulp mill and retired from there many years after. Ross was a member of the Eagles and the Legion. In his later years, he was more dedicated to the Oyster River Fire Department and took his volunteerism seriously. Ross enjoyed hunting, sports on TV, and almost never stop talking about his dogs. He is survived by his only son Paul McDonald and grandson Xzander McDonald, brother Rae McDonald (Norma), as well as his partner Virginia Foss, Valerie Foss, Randy Foss, Aaron McCallum and Ashton Foss. A coffee/tea will be held at the Eagles Hall, 1999 -14th Avenue on Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 1-3pm.

No place like home for Tyees Storm continue to roll The KLP Construction Bantam A Tyees returned home for a pair of contests at Rod Brind’Amour Arena last weekend. Saturday saw the Powell River Kings make the journey across the pond, in a crucial final tiering round match up. There’s an old saying, “there’s nothing like home cooking,” and this years’ Bantam squad seem to enjoy playing in front of their home fans. The energy and determination was bursting from those white jerseys. The hosts started very strong, sending a clear message to the Kings’ defence and goaltender that they were in for a long day. The visitors opened the scoring on a power play midway through the first and enjoyed a 1-0 lead after one period, thanks to their goalie, who was, by all accounts ‘standing on his head.’ The onslaught continued in the second, as wave after wave of Tyees attacked the net, only to be turned aside. Jalen Price, however, was able to solve the visiting goaltender on the power play late in the second frame. The home squad scored four unanswered goals in the second half to give them the 5-1 win, with goals from River Fahey, Codey Savey and two more from Price to give him the hat trick. The final shot tally was 53-12 for the Tyees.

time Friday with a familiar combination of balanced scoring and solid goaltending. A pleasant surprise for the 887 fans on hand was the power play, which sprang to life after lying dormant most of the season, going three for seven and creating a bushel of chances. “There’s some (power play) stuff we’ve been working on and (Friday) it paid a lot of dividends,” said Storm head coach Lee Stone. “We got a back-door goal and (Christian) Brandt had a great one from the slot – we’re really starting to use all the options and finding the right targets. We have three power play units that can all score, most teams in our league would love to have just one.” Dane Feeney opened the scoring for the Storm

The last time the Campbell River Storm was this good, Jean Chretien was the Prime Minister, Lord of the Rings topped the box office, and Peter Forsberg won the NHL scoring title. Yes, it’s been a while, but the boys are back. The Storm matched a team record for best start to a season with a 6-2 home ice triumph over the Nanaimo Buccaneers on Friday night. It was their ninth straight victory, matching the club mark set at the beginning of the Storm’s 2003/04 campaign. Coincidentally, that was the last time Campbell River won the Brent Patterson Memorial Trophy as champions of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. The Storm beat the Bucs for the third straight

one goal. Starting Tyee goalie Antoine Minfray gave his team a big boost early in the third, as he made a number of big glove saves to keep the game within reach. This seemed to spark the tiring Tyees as Price beat the Eagle goaltender to preserve the tie 4-4.

with his first of the season, only to have Nanaimo’s Trent Bell equalize a few minutes later. Gavin Rauser put Campbell River back in front before the end of the first, banging in a nice goal-mouth pass by Grady McInnes. James Severs made it 3-1 with a power play marker but the Buccaneers carried much of the play during the middle frame, peppering Storm netminder Joey Karrer with 19 shots. They finally got one by the stingy Campbell River goalie late in the second when Hobin Zinck shovelled a loose puck into the net after everyone in the building thought the play was dead. Riptide surge back

After two weeks on the road, the Riptide U14 girls played at home Saturday against the Lower Island Gorge/Lakehill Thunder. Coming off two losses against lower Island teams, Riptide was determined to turn the tides. Building on home team advantage and their confidence in playing on a grass pitch, Riptide got down to business immediately, scoring the first goal of the game and setting the stage for what would follow.

From left, (Riptide in blue): Riptide’s Tiana Stewart, Sophie Denko, and Abby Sexton jockey for position in front of the Gorge/Lakehill net.

Within five minutes, Kayla Kalhous set up a perfect play for forward Frédérica BlouinComeau, who used her speed down the left-wing to score her signature left-footed, tight-angle goal. That was the start of a Riptide surge. The team dominated, scor-

ing two more goals in the next fifteen minutes (Ciara Halvorson and Aisha Hunter-Bellavia). Riptide’s Abby Sexton wrapped up the first half with a celebratory goal on a breakaway. With a solid lead of 4-1 at half, Riptide controlled the play in the second half.

Autumn Lewis made Gorge fans cringe as she set up the next two goals for Riptide (Halvorson and Sexton both scored their second goals of the game). Lauren Wigard scored for Riptide in the last moments of the game, en route to a 7-1 win.

Stevens broke down the left wing and set up Tyler Welsh who onetimed it over the shoulder of Nanaimo goaltender Greg Maggio. Campbell River then closed it out with third period tallies by Michael Olson and Christian Brandt, his team leading eighth of the season. Newly acquired Connor Logan registered one assist in his Storm debut and admitted he had some butterflies playing in front of a big home crowd. “The crowd was jump-

Our line (with Severs and Gavin Rauser) played with a lot of energy, created chances, and we started to develop some chemistry.” Stone said Logan will be a welcome addition to the team. “It’s really nice when you can roll four strong

lines and that made all the difference for us tonight.” T h e St or m we re attempting to break the team record with a tenth straight win Tuesday night in Victoria against the Westshore Wolves after the Mirror went to press. Although 85% of Canadians agree that having an emergency kit and plan are important to ensure both personal and family safety, only 40% have actually prepared for it. We know you because we’ve been there too.
