Houston’s John Siebenga is running for town council this year. “I have a growing interest in Houston,” he said. “I really like the community and I want to have a positive impact on this town while I’m here.” This the first time Siebenga has run for town council, and having lived here for over six years he believes he has something to offer Houston. “I want to promote it as a place for businesses to thrive, men and women to cherish and enjoy, children to live securely and a place for visitors to come and avail themselves to all the stuff we have here,” he said. “Houston has just got such an incredible amount of stuff for them to do,

and I don’t think it’s widely known.” Asked what will benefit Houston most, Siebenga said business. “We need to take care of the businesses in this town, I think as a District that should be a primary goal, because [businesses] are the core of who we are. “How do we go about taking care of them so that it’s a good place for them to be and serve the people?” See ELECT on Page 2
Volunteers build new dam for Irrigation Lake By Jackie Lieuwen Houston Today
“The donations and enthusiasm of the people and companies from Houston have allowed us to achieve much better results then anyone expected,” said Steve Page, stakeholder representative for the Irrigation Lake dam project. Construction of
the new Irrigation Lake dam started last week Monday, sourced by donations and volunteers from Houston. The use of equipment was all donated from Houston businesses, including a compactor from John Himech Logging, an excavator from Andy Meints Contracting, a rock truck from Groot Bros Contracting,
bulldozer from Tom Neufeld Trucking, and a small excavator from Co-ed Enterprises. The Vanderhoof & Districts Co-op donated 1,000 litres of fuel, Canfor paid for the culvert given at a reduced rate from Armtech in Prince George, and Rough Acres donated the use of water pumps. “Everything we asked for has been
given very quickly and enthusiastically,” said Page. “It’s going very well.” V o l u n t e e r equipment operators from Houston manned the machines Monday to Wednesday last week, putting in long days to make the most of the good weather. The project was set back slightly due to delays in manufacturing the

culvert, so volunteers took a break Wednesday until Tuesday morning, yesterday, when the culvert was in and the project continued. Engineer Carl Pentilchuk, who designed the new dam plans, was hired to oversee the project with funding from the Bulkley Valley Credit Union. He flew in September 28 from

planning, agefriendly, and the movement to make Houston more friendly for visitors. Councillor Rick Lundrigan says he is running again for Houston council. He wasn’t sure at first because of work challenges, but the scope of his work
is changing now which will allow him to “put his hat into the ring for a third time.” “It has been a pleasure to have served Houston for the last six years,” he said. “It would be an honour to serve for another term should the voters of Houston choose to re-elect me.” Other Houston councillors Jonathan Van Barneveld and Dawn Potvin are also running again this term. Michalle Jolly and Kyle Thomson will not run. Shane Brienen is challenging Bill Holmberg for mayor. Mayor and council will be elected November 15 for a four year term. Nominations are open until this Friday at 4 p.m. and forms are available at the District of Houston office.

“Enbridge increasing Houston presence” By Jackie Lieuwen Houston Today
Enbridge engaged Houston in an open house last Tuesday. Northern Gateway information and representatives spread out through the Houston Community Hall to answer local questions. “We are aware people in the community have questions about the project and have increased our presence in Houston over the last few months,” said Katherine Coutinho, Northern Gateway communications manager. Coutinho says Janet Holder, leader of Northern Gateway, visited Houston in August to meet with Houston council, and other members of the team have been engaging with local businesses and dropping in on venues. Coutinho says they are currently reviewing the need for

In our opinion:
Municipalities get no love
M
ayors and councillors didn’t get much in the way of joy or love from the provincial government last week during the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual conference. A resolution was passed unanimously by UBCM delegates asking the government to rescind recent B.C. Ferries fare hikes and service cuts, revenue decisions that affect most residents at one point or another. Minutes after the resolution passed, B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone kiboshed the idea. “That’s not going to happen,” he told a reporter. The UBCM was asking for a rollback in fares to 2013 rates. They were too high then, as well. The motion put forward by UBCM delegates came on the heels of a report suggesting B.C. has missed out on more than $2 billion in economic activity over the past decade because of rising fares. Stone labelled the report “irresponsible” and argued that was “unsubstantiated.” When he wasn’t keeping the socialist hordes away from the gates of British Columbia, Premier W.A.C. Bennett essentially created B.C. Ferries in the late 1950s. A strike by employees of the private Black Ball Line was the impetus for Bennett’s plan to create a government-owned ferry service. Bennett saw it as an extension of the highway system. Say that now and watch both federal and provincial politicians run for the hills. Back at the UBCM last week, delegates passed an emergency motion related to the sharing of tax revenue by the province. This is mostly about infrastructure upgrades – more a problem for older jursidictions such as Victoria and Oak Bay, less so for newer cities such as Langford and Colwood – and the increasing difficulty municipalities have funding projects. The emergency motion was thought to be required because the provincial government has ignored, for 12 months, a report detailing a partnership proposal between the province and municipalities. No word, no love, from the province on this one, either. Premier Christy Clark didn’t bring any either when she addressed the UBCM on Friday. Makes one wonder just how serious the provincial government takes the UBCM. - Black Press

For the love of laundry I have a love/hate relationship with laundry. I love the modern convenience of having my own washing machine and dryer right inside my house, and I’m often reminding myself how much easier things are because of that privilege, but I hate how often I’m cleaning stuff that isn’t even dirty. Okay, maybe hate is too strong a word. “Why are these in here?” I asked my kids when I found three damp bath sheets on the top of the hamper. “I just washed these yesterday.” “You said you didn’t want us leaving them on the floor,” my 11-year-old daughter said, perplexed at my objection. “What I ask is for you to hang the towels you’ve only used once up on the rack in the bathroom like you would in a hotel,” I
said. “That way they’ll dry and you can use them again and we’re not wasting as much water or electricity.” “Sorry Mom,” my 14-year-old son said. “It won’t happen again.” When my kids apologize and say something won’t happen again, what that really means is they’d like me to stop talking about it until the next time it happens. “And what’s all this doing in here?” I asked, pulling out clothes my daughter and her friends had on briefly for one of their play-fashion shows. “You only wore these for a few minutes.” “Oh yeah,” my daughter said, grabbing them to take back to the closet. “Ew,” she said after taking a few steps down the hall. “These stink.” “I’ll bet,” I said. “They’ve been all
mixed in with the dirty washcloths and workout clothes by now.” “Way to go, Daisy,” Sam said. “Throwing everything in the hamper isn’t cleaning up, you know.” “Well, at least I tried,” Daisy replied. “Your room’s still a disaster.” It actually wasn’t nearly as bad as it’s been before. Despite the large wicker basket displayed prominently along the wall in the middle of his bedroom, there were clothes and blankets all over the floor, under his bed and behind his guitars in the corner. “You play basketball, right?” I asked him. “Think of this hamper as your basket and your clothes as the ball and try to score some goals.” This was not a new suggestion, but a recycled one that I remembered using on
him with some success when he was a little boy. My kids are messy people who require games, deals and sometimes ultimatums to get them to clean up after themselves. For example, if I bring in a big garbage bag and say they have 15 minutes to put their stuff away or anything left out will get donated to a more tidy kid, they’ll do it. People have told me that all children are slobs, but I know at least one that’s a neat freak, just like her mom. Looking for some insight into this wonderful phenomenon I asked my friend what she was doing right to have produced such a kid. She said her younger daughter was that way naturally and her older one was similar to my children. Sam and Daisy might not be as
2009
On a brighter note Lori Welbourne clean as I’d like, but apparently they know sports terminology better than me. “You know we don’t score goals in basketball, right Mom?” my son asked as he dunked a sock. “That’s true,” my daughter said, laughing with her brother. “We score points, Silly.” I didn’t care. As long as they were making an effort to help, I had nothing but love for our never-ending laundry. Okay, maybe love is too strong a word.

On the
Street... What advice or concerns do you have for Enbridge about the Northern Gateway pipeline?
By Jackie Lieuwen
Letters to the
Editor
Editor: By the time this will be published Enbridge’s “Let’s Talk,” advertised in last week’s Houston Today, will have taken place. My guess is, like myself, not many people will have bothered to show up. After all, what’s there to talk about? For most of us in this region, the project is far too risky with way too few benefits.
Enbridge reminds me of a guy who is so self absorbed that he can’t accept when a woman tells him “NO,” and he keeps coming back with the same song. Ironic that the public face Enbridge appointed to make it’s case to us is it’s VP Janet Holder, a woman. But what’s the economic benefit to the average guy or gal up here?

“I support the project. I’ve seen what they’re proposing and I think they’ve met all the safeguards necessary for them to proceed. I come from Jasper Alberta, where a pipeline was put in 60 years ago and there has never been an issue. If we say no to every project, our standard of living is going to decline.”
“My advice is that they follow the provincial Acid Rock Guidelines when you put the trenches in. That means test the rock to see if it’s acid generating, and then don’t put acid rock back into the trenches.”
“My advice is for them to accept the answer no. They say they’re engaging with Aboriginal groups, but all five clans of Wetsu’wet’en have said no, and they’re still trying to pursue it. We don’t want more destructive industries, and we’re not willing to put our clean water and salmon at risk.”
“My main concern is the risk of having an oil spill along the pipeline or the Douglas Channel, which could devastate ecosystems and fisheries.”
Pipeline payoff higher gas prices Twenty years ago, with gas prices going up and up, we were told that it was all a question of supply and demand in a market economy. If we didn’t like higher gas prices, all we had to do was use less of the stuff. So some of us did. We bought smaller cars and drove less. Prices kept going up, mind you, but not as much as in Europe or Asia. And the oil companies don’t like it. They want the supply and demand
equation tilted back in their favour. Well, guess what,
“ “

they came up with the answer. If they could take the oil they extracted from our lands, and sell it in Asia, it would make it
- Egon Rapp here, that means more expensive. About 30% more at the pump they figure. Now personally, I wouldn’t mind higher
from Canadian oil, would be used to keep our own gas prices lower. The last time that happened was under Pierre
Trudeau’s National Energy Policy, when we actually paid less for gas than the Americans, and it almost let to a civil war with Alberta. So it’s highly unlikely any Canadian government would ever try that again. So to those who favour this pipeline, I say you better be prepared to pay 30% more at the pump. Egon Rapp Houston, BC
Cities demand oil pipeline scrutiny and safety By Jeff Nagel Black Press
Civic leaders worried about the threat of an oil spill disaster from Kinder Morgan’s planned Trans Mountain pipeline twinning pushed through a series of emergency resolutions Friday at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention. A Burnaby resolution called on the federal government to restore full public hearings leading up to National Energy Board decisions. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said the current revised sys-
tem is unfair because it denies stakeholders concerned about the Kinder Morgan project the same ability to give oral evidence and cross-examine witnesses that was available in the Northern Gateway pipeline hearings. A second resolution from Victoria demands the province conduct its own environmental assessment of the Trans Mountain project in light of inadequate written responses from the company to information requests under the NEB process. A Vancouver resolution that also passed keyed on concerns
that diluted bitumen will sink in water and prove nearly impossible to clean up whether it’s spilled at sea or into a creek or river. It urged the NEB to require site-specific plans to deal with sunken oil and that the province fully assess the plans and capability to respond to submerged bitumen. “Bitumen does not float on the surface, it sinks to the bottom,” said Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal, refuting industry claims the heavy oil will float. “The way to solve this is to have the oil refined in Alberta,” said Nelson Coun. Robin
Cherbo. “Bitumen should not be sent through a pipeline.” North Cowichan Coun. Al Siebring ar-
calling for outright opposition to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Several speakers feared denial

of the project would result in more oil carried by rail at greater risk. The City of Burnaby and Kinder Morgan continue to spar before the NEB as to whether pipeline survey crews can con-
duct intrusive study work on Burnaby Mountain after a preliminary ruling that the company cannot violate Burnaby bylaws. Other resolutions passed Friday by UBCM included: - A call from Kamloops to give municipal bylaw officers the power to break into vehicles and enter other non-residential premises to rescue animals in critical distress. City staff currently must call police or SPCA officers if they find dogs about to perish in a parked car. - A request that Telus priorize tele-
phone landline repairs in rural areas, where residents may not have cellphone coverage and sometimes face a wait of weeks without 911 access if service fails. - A resolution urging Ottawa to immediately restrict old rail tanker cars slated for a three-year phase out to carrying only nonvolatile liquids. - A resolution opposing provincial grants to municipalities with no residents, such as the new Jumbo Glacier Resort, which Invermere’s mayor said is the recipient of “ridiculous” government subsidies.

By Jackie Lieuwen Houston Today
H o u s t o n Community Services is about enhancing quality of life in Houston. “We provide support for families, and for anyone really who is in need,” said Coordinator Diane Batley. “If you don’t know where to go or what to do, come here.” Funded by local
donations and the Ministry of Children and Families, Houston Community Services is a non-profit agency. They run programs to help people learn life skills, parenting skills, social skills and to how to foster healthy relationships and build self-esteem. They rent out carseats, do victims services and help people fill out government forms.

Babysitting courses and Beanstalk child care is also part of their programs. They are actively counselling and providing family support in Houston on an ongoing basis, Batley said, adding that they also refer people to other agencies in town. Aisha Gardezy, Family Support Worker, says their focus is on providing relevant programs. “We’re focusing on getting an idea of what the community needs and delivering that,” she said, adding that the programs they run will be based on needs they hear of through clients and conversations. To that end, Community Services is hosting a drop-in lunch called “Table Talk,” every Monday starting Oct. 20. The objective of Community Services is

Aisha has a background in women’s advocacy and Batley in social work. Marianne Dekker, previous coordinator, is now semi-retired and continues to work as administrator. “to promote conduct and sponsor programs designed to alleviate some of the problems encountered by the cit-
izens of Houston and surrounding areas.” They work cooperatively with other agencies in town with
the goal of enhancing Houston’s quality of life. “Anybody can come here. It doesn’t
matter - your gender, your ethnicity, your ideologies. We help anybody who needs help,” Batley said.
