Valley-wide fire service
proposed BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
In a scene reminiscent of Groundhog Day, three local fire chiefs have proposed a move toward formation of a Creston Valley fire protection service, to be formed under the Town of Creston umbrella. “For the last five years our fire departments have been discussing a valley-wide service where rural areas would contract with the Town to fold us in with the Town of Creston Fire Department,” CanyonLister fire chief Glen Guthrie said at Tuesday’s Creston Valley Services Committee meeting. “We feel there is a disconnect with the regional district and its fire chief.” RDCK fire chief Terry Swann and Area B director John Kettle dismissed a similar proposal when Guthrie and his colleagues presented the proposal more than three years ago. Dayle MacRae, chief of the WynndelLakeview Fire Department, echoed Guthrie’s sentiments. “There is a disconnect with the fire chief (Swann) and we don’t get good value from the RDCK,” he said. “Our ‘automatic aid’ is working and provides better value for the dollar.” Kettle cautioned the meeting, saying “That laundry needs to be washed separately,” but agreed that “operational efficiency makes it better for all fire services in the Valley. Our fire protection agreement with the Town is a great deal for Erickson, and now it also works for Arrow Creek, which is also covered by the Canyon-Lister and Wynndel-Lakeview

fire departments. “I don’t think you will find any of us are going to be opposed to looking at this. It increases our ability to attract volunteers and train them. This is a great request, frankly,” he said. Kettle asked RDCK’s new chief administrative officer Stuart Horn “what format is needed to enter into contract with the Town of Creston and still keep our assets (buildings, trucks and equipment) in the regional district?” Horn said the easiest path is to transfer all assets to the Town. “But that is a way down the road—it would likely have to go to referendum after a public consultation process” indicates “that they agree there are increases in efficiency.” “The big thing is public consultation up front to see if they agree with the chiefs’ proposal.” Area A director Garry Jackman commented that the change removes some
control from residents. “This is different because now if voters are dissatisfied with their service they can vote out the director in the next election,” he said. “They can’t do that with a contract. It’s a subtle difference, but it is still different.” A portion of Area C goes to referendum in November to determine if voters want to contract with the Town of Creston for fire protection services to West Creston and portions of the Creston Flats. Town manager Lou Varela said there is much work to be done, but the Town of Creston is prepared to discuss the chiefs’ proposal. “There are a lot of implications, including the transfer of assets, etc. further down the road,” she said. Mayor Ron Toyota spoke in favour of the process. “Let’s get the ball rolling,” he said. Kettle made a motion to direct RDCK and Town of Creston staff to produce a

report, including a time line, on how the valley-wide system can become a reality. The motion carried unanimously. Kettle also brought up the issue of the sprinkler protection unit, a piece of firefighting equipment purchased to help fight interface fires in areas where developed property abuts to forest lands. “It was bought by fundraising and contributions from the Town and Areas A, B and C. It is not an RD asset,” he said. Guthrie said the trailer, the bulk of whose cost was covered by Canyon-Lister Fire Protect Society calendar sales, is stored at his firehall. While not actually owned by the RDCK its license is registered under the regional district for insurance purposes. Kettle moved to transfer the trailer to the Town of Creston “because it has never been an RD asset.” “I don’t see a problem with this,” Horn said. The motion passed.

It has become a tradition for members of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats Junior B hockey team to participate in a food drive for the Gleaners Food Bank. This year was no exception as players donned their jerseys and canvassed for donations. “Their efforts are very much appreciated,” said Dorathy Pfeifer, a Gleaners volunteer. Delivery of items collected was made last Friday, along with nearly $900 in cash, that will be used to supplement Food Bank stocks. Pictured in uniform (l to r) are Thunder Cats captain Marcel Fuchs, and alternate captains Connor Ward and Connor Kidd. Gleaners volunteers (l to r) Doreen Lowe, Margaret Adams, Iva Schultz, Dorathy Pfeifer and Linda Rickards were on hand to take delivery of the goods. As winter nears, the Food Bank welcomes donations of cash and non-perishable items. Every little bit helps.

Music fans are in for a treat on Friday, October 17 when popular musician Steve Bell performs on his Pilgrimage tour. Bell has been performing since he was 8, having been taught to play guitar by his father, a prison chaplain at the federal Drumheller penitentiary. He played in a trio in the 1980s, then turned to solo performances in 1989. He has since released 17 CDs in a 25-year span and played dates with symphony orchestras throughout North America. In 1997 he won a Juno for Best Gospel Album, a feat he repeated in 2000. For his advocacy work for the less fortunate, Bell was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. With a huge fan base eager to hear his songs and stories based on Christian scripture and themes, Bell tours regularly. A four-CD release entitled Pilgrimage is now on the market. Pastor uses allegory as teaching tool The Garden People published at the urging of his son BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor Nearly 30 years ago, Ron Benty created Solum, a fantasy world inhabited by anthropomorphic vegetables, wrote a story about their adventures and then… let it sit for 28 years. His recently self-published novel, The Garden People, follows the adventures of carrots Clifford Rootabert and Humley Smallstock — along with pumpkins Roald and Woald, and the Hammericks, a cornstalk — as they search for the sacred Book trapped in the clutches of Solomon Growhard and his onion renegades, resulting a battle of good and evil. For Benty, pastor of the Wynndel Community Church, the novel offered the opportunity to express his beliefs through allegory, offering younger readers an exciting romp while educating them spiritually. “I felt I could talk about anything without being dry and moralistic,” he said. “What it was was not the idea of people neglecting the Bible, but the renegade guys were changing it. That, to me, is more dangerous. … The other vegetables aren’t perfect, but they’re representing it honestly.” Benty was born on Vancouver Island, eventually moving with his parents to Golden. He moved back to the island, joining a church that held services in a rented rec centre room. Seven years after finishing high school, Benty attended the University of Toronto, and graduated with a master of divinity degree. He became a Presbyterian minister in Prince Albert, Sask., and later Montreal, Que., for five years. After that, he and his wife of 28 years, Gwen, and their three sons moved to Creston, where he became pastor of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church in Creston. He left the denomination in October 2007 to become pastor at the Wynndel Community Church. At the urging of his middle son, Morgan, Benty finally self-published The Garden People

this summer, giving it a “childlike spirit” by enlisting 15-year-old artist James Troughton to create the cover illustration, featuring Clifford and Humley, and several inside, including vicious blackberries and a pipe-smoking earthworm. “I didn’t want someone professional because I didn’t want it to look professional,” he said. “I wanted it to resonate with kids.” In creating the characters, Benty took inspiration from popular characters — beasts and animals — in Walt Disney animated films, which had a lasting impact. When it came to appreciating nature, he said, “Bambi did a lot more for me than environmental guys walking down the road with placards.” And even more than animals, vegetables as characters come across as intensely vulnerable. “They can go rotten,” he laughed. “They’re not as big as they think they are in perspective to the world.” Even so, they’re resilient, whether climbing rock faces, exploring tunnels or taking on Growhard’s renegade forces in small skirmishes or a Bible-inspired pitched battle for the Book. “To me, it represents spiritual warfare,” said Benty. The project has been a family affair from the beginning, from Benty’s mother-in-law typing out the original manuscript in the 1980s to his son’s push for the book’s publication, and some family members might recognize themselves in its pages — his sister, Julia, for example, makes an appearance as a tomato. And while he’s tossing around a few ideas for a sequel, Benty hopes that his book will offer readers a hint at the simplicity of biblical teachings. “I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out what the Good Samaritan is,” he said. “I think God left us with enough that if we’re like the vegetables, we’ll make it.” The Garden People is available at Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and FriesenPress.com.

Council gets independent police investigation primer Chief Civilian Director Richard Rosenthall visits Creston to explain how office established in 2012 works Creston Town Council got a first-hand report on the workings of the Independent Investigation Office of BC at Tuesday’s regular meeting. Chief Civilian Director Richard Rosenthal appeared at the meeting to explain how his office deals with investigations into police related incidents involving death or serious harm. Rosenthal said he has led investigations in four cases involving police in the Kootenays, two of which were in Creston. “In one case the officer in question was exonerated by our investigation,” he said. “In another, involving a bar fight, our findings were forwarded to Crown Counsel, which determined that criminal charges would not be laid against the officer.” Rosenthal says referring an incident to Crown is not a recommendation that charges should be laid. “We are different than police, who are making a recommendation for charges when they refer cases to Crown,” Rosenthal said. “We are obligated to forward our findings on any incident in which we are unable to exonerate a police officer.” Rosenthal was appointed as BC’s first Chief Civilian Director of the newly formed IIO in January of 2012. The IIO was created with the support of police chiefs across the province after some high profile incidents, including the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski, created public concern about police investigating colleagues. He previously spent 15 years as a Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney, where he prosecuted felonies including homicides, inveswith Dr. Joanne Lih tigated and prosecuted high-profile financial crimes as well as public officials, judges and Tuesday October 14 and October 28 police officers. Khadafy might be savage and treacherous and crazy, as Ronald Reagan says, but even our closest allies enjoy doing business with him, and he will probably be around for a long time, unless Reagan can have him killed.” I can’t help but wonder what Thompson, who killed himself in 2005, would say if he was around to witness the continuing saga in the Middle East, where yet another “coalition of the willing” is gearing up to tackle Islamic State/ISIS/ISIL in Iraq, at least to start with. I think he might have taken one look at Canada’s involvement and observed that Prime Minister Harper is heading into an election campaign and that in the need to set himself apart from other party leaders, is positioning himself so he can say to the Canadian people, “Who do you want leading your country in times of crisis?” and Thompson might have concluded, “If you want to be seen as a leader in times of crisis, the first step is to create a crisis.”

Open thinking needed for vacancies To the Editor: What are you experiencing with the obvious shop vacancies in our downtown? I’d like to encourage you to reflect with me upon how you feel about seeing vacant storefronts and what thoughts are coming up for you as a result. I ask you to do this with me because when we are mindful and thoughtful, we are aware of what we are projecting into the circumstance. You might think that your singular opinion is not going to have any impact but if you combine your opinion with like opinions it becomes the reality, even if it is not based on facts. It is easy to feel sad when we hear of shops shutting down and to see empty storefronts, presuming it is this way because there wasn’t enough business to go around. This thought leads to the next one, which could be that there is something wrong with our town. Then we make further speculations without really taking the time to be thoughtful about where these ideas are coming
from. If we admit to caring, we would make inquiries into what is really happening. All meaningful relationships have been developed through caring consideration and the willingness to understand. Often the easy way out of something that we presume to be unpleasant is to pretend it doesn’t matter. Or if we can’t ignore it, then it is easy for us to go into blame and then helplessness. What kind of message are we sending out then? What if we didn’t view empty storefronts as a symptom of an illness? What if we could notice empty storefronts in a state of caring inquisitiveness? Wouldn’t being open to inquiry make our community more available for possibilities to arise instead of limiting our town to perceptions that sound like it has a kind of terminal illness (as I have heard some people proclaim within their hopeless state)? I usually begin my inquiries by looking at some ideas I have heard while also looking at my own speculations. I
do this with an open heart and mind. It is kind of like gently deconstructing a story. Then I can make edits to a story in a way that is more serving and is founded in information that is closer to the truth. I then remind myself to remain open to a story evolving, while noting that in reality I am creating my own story, which may not be the same as others’. I love our community too much to place my sole story on to it. As one person, I have limitations. I want more for our community than one version. This is why it is important for me to make inquiries with others. There are lots of stories out there related to the circumstance of empty storefronts, some are attached to truths and others attached to repeated misunderstandings. So let’s “reflect instead of mirror”. Please join me in making caring considerate inquiries about what is happening while being available to experience a more meaningful fulfilling relationship with our town. Debby Johnson Wynndel

“War smells but it sells”
To the Editor: The world has been in constant rumblings of unease ever since the war to end all wars, followed by the West’s atomic attack in another war to end all wars. Unfortunately, we have not seen a day without a war since then or before. Since the formation of the U.S. after its conflict with England, when peace threatened to break out, the U.S. obliged by intelligence-inspired regime change exercises or some other military intervention seeking to establish democracy in the following countries (some more than once): Angola, Albania, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Bolivia, Cuba, Chili, China, Columbia, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, El Salvador, Grenada, Guam, Guatemala, Greece, Haiti, Honduras, Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Liberia, Laos, Macedonia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Oman, Puerto Rica, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Samoa,, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Uruguay Virgin Islands, Vietnam, Yemen and Zaire. While the recent gruesome executions by ISIS (Islamic State, formerly
Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham) are reminiscent of the Christian crusades, where the Christian soldiers proudly waded up to their knees in Mohammedan blood, I wonder how many heads and limbs were severed by the recent bombings and terror attacks in the middle east by the western powers, including leadership by the United Nations and NATO, not to mention the continuing drone strikes which continue to slaughter innocents in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Yes, these terrorists want to commit atrocities on the invading western hordes who are killing their people and stealing their oil, but it is difficult to reasonably condemn them since they consider themselves as being terrorized by the west. And the U.S. is not alone. U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron seemed positively jubilant when his Parliament voted to join the air strikes, and commented, with relish, that this would not be a short war. Our prime minister was no slouch either, and eager to offer Canada’s military might in this oppres-
sive enterprise, shamelessly playing deputy to Sheriff Obama. It seems that the rumblings of war are louder than ever, and the prognosis is an increase in tit-for-tat terrorism rather than a de-escalation. What a triumph for the military industrial complex! And what a stimulus for floundering economies! War smells but it sells, and there is a lineup for the coalition of the killing. However, there is hope and an easy solution that may emerge when these powers become weary of the senseless slaughter. Perhaps the UN could suggest it. If this coalition is serious about achieving peace, all they have to do is withdraw all military installations and armaments to within their own borders. Only when they are invaded can they defend themselves. In the meantime, the belligerents will have to deal with themselves in their own countries without interference, and may soon follow this wonderful example. Let’s hope! Larry Ewashen Creston
This precept is about sharing both wealth and wisdom. Zen Buddhists accept that we are on this planet to be of service to others. To do this service we must realize that all possessions, including our understanding of the teachings of wisdom and compassion, are simply things that have no value unless they are part of that service to others. For Zen Buddhists, wealth is not something we should keep, hold on to or value highly for itself. It seems natural to try to turn a profit from every human exchange. We are often trying to get something: money, admiration, love, recognition, acknowledgement, connection. Much of this is just an ingrained habit that arises out of fear of doing something 100 per cent. Imagine loving someone 100 per cent. Imagine giving something with no thought of getting something back. When we give with hope of getting something back, we are living at only 70 per cent or 60 per cent. This precept is also about not looking at the world with envy. “I want a new bike!” “I want a bigger house!” These are the cries of immaturity. Mature people value what they have: the small things, the simple and costfree things all around us that make life meaningful. But they also see the transient
nature of material things and know that attaining possessions is a hollow achievement. A common mistake in beginning Zen
their stinginess is rooted in entrenched preferences. At this point they begin their work with the teaching that “the great way is not difficult for those who stop picking and choosing.” Then they can meet whatever arises in their lives without grasping or pushing anything away. In other words, they can “go with the flow.” Greed has taken over much of our country. Our great northern forests are being diminished by logging, fossil fuel extraction and transportation faster than any other forests in the world. Profit is what drives our policy and our economy. In such an atmosphere, everyone is vulnerable, trust is eroded, and the health of the planet is threatened. This is why greed is considered to be a poison. The antidote to greed is generosity. This precept teaches us to catch ourselves being greedy and then automatically correct that with generosity. Suggested practice: Notice when wanting arises in your awareness. Do you need it? If not, let it go. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Creston’s ZenWords Zen Centre. For more information, she can be reached at 250-4286500.

students is that they want to get something from their practice. They want to improve, they want enlightenment, they want approval. They are so focused on what they can get in the future that they miss the wonder of the present moment. In other words, they have not yet learned to let go of the thought that they will get something back from their practice. Once students realize their error in wanting to get something out of practice, they can begin to work with their stinginess. They have taken the first step — realizing where they are in relation to stinginess — so they are free to discover that

Author to speak about Canada’s “open secret” Genealogy research leads to revelation about Joyce’s grandfather BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff A Kootenay writer will be visiting Creston to tell his story of how British children were brought to Canada to work as servants. Sean Arthur Joyce, author of Laying the Ghosts to Rest, appears at Creston Museum on Wednesday, October 15 at 7 p.m. In what Joyce describes as Canadian history’s “biggest open secret”, 100,000 children were brought from poor neighbourhoods in Great Britain, often without support or even permission of their parents, to Canada. Here, between 1869 and 1948, they were put to work as indentured servants. Joyce said last week that he stumbled on the subject seven years ago while researching his own fam-
ily tree. He learned through immigration records that his paternal grandfather immigrated to Canada as a child with three other boys and a chaperone. His parents were not with him. Curious, he consulted with a local genealogist who introduced him to the term Home Children. The term meant nothing to him at the time, but he says his curiosity was sparked and he used his background in journalism to investigate further. “The wider story interested me because I
realized if this happened in my family, it must have happened in many other Canadian families,” he said. Without doubt--an estimated four million people, about one in eight Canadians--can trace their roots to Home Children. Another 30,000 or more children were sent off to British colonies like Australia and New Zealand. Immigration agencies, often with questionable reputation, kept the practice going until the mid-20th century. “Though some of the children did well, many were exploited and abused,” he said, ‘their new lives hardly an improvement on the ones they left behind.” Some of the children were adopted by Canadian families, but most were simply kept on as labourers. In Laying the Ghosts to Rest, Joyce explores how the children’s experience influenced subsequent generations of Canadians.

Cole Harris, Professor Emeritus of Historical Geography, UBC, says Joyce’s book is “A signficant achievement in Canadian history.” Joyce visited Creston in 2011 when he toured the Columbia Basin to speak on the Home Children subject while he was researching for his book. His current tour, which includes stops in Cranbrook, Kimberley, Windermere and Revelstoke, is supported by the Columbia Basin Trust through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance. Joyce previously toured the Columbia Basin in 2011, giving talks in Creston, Cranbrook, Invermere, Golden and Revelstoke, during the research phase of his book. He wrote the Heritage Beat column in the Nelson Daily News from 1996-2000 and has a quarter century of experience as a journalist.

Fundraiser benefits local literacy
ADVANCE STAFF By reading this you are already keenly aware of the value of literacy. Chances are you grew up in a home where reading was valued. You may have been taught the ABCs on a parent’s lap, seen books, magazines and newspapers as part
of your everyday experience around your home, learned to love the printed word in its many, many forms. Not everyone was so fortunate. Kids grow up ignored or raised by a parent who simply doesn’t have the financial ability or skills to help inspire them to read. New Canadians start
Thursday, October 9, 2014 Creston Valley Advance from scratch. Luckily, we have a number of community programs that help promote literacy to children and adults, whether they were born in Canada or grew up with a different first language. Thank you for supporting the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy’s local programs.

Benefit from nutritious turkey even after Thanksgiving
If turkey is not normally on your lunch or dinner menu, come the holiday season it’s bound to show up in abundance. As soon as the weather cools and the crispness of late autumn is in the air, thoughts turn to more hearty meals, and of course, the fall pièce de résistance: Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey takes center stage on many Thanksgiving dinner tables, even though history suggests it likely wasn’t served at the first Thanksgiving. Despite this historical discrepancy, turkey and all
helps decrease levels of homocysteine, which can contribute to cognitive decline. • Immune system effects: People may not know turkey contains selenium, which is key to healthy thyroid function. It also helps boost the immune system by playing a role in the body’s antioxidant defense system. Selenium may help eliminate free radicals in the body that would otherwise contribute to cancer risk. • Relaxation: Many people are aware of turkey’s ability to induce feelings of relaxEastern ation, particularly when eaten Star in abundance at the ThanksANNUAL giving dinner table. the trimmings continue to be traditional fare for big holiday dinners. Much more than just delicious and filling, turkey boasts many nutritional benefits, making it a worthwhile addition to your diet regardless of the season. • Protein: Turkey is often overshadowed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a lowfat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell walls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness. • Low-fat: A serving of turkey is only 161 calories and contains just four grams of fat, which is low in saturated fat. • B-vitamin benefits: Turkey is an excellent source of B vitamins, including B3, B6 and B12. Trails committee is on the march to expand
TRAILS FOR CRESTON VALLEY SOCIETY
With summer wrapping up, we are soaking up these last bright warm days and bumping into lots of people out on the trails! Trails for Creston Valley Society is a group of outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for our beautiful valley and waterways. A not-for-profit society with charitable status, its goal is to protect and maintain access to treasured outdoor spaces. The society is getting geared up for celebrating the work that has been done on the trails in town and taking on some new and exciting projects. It has spent the summer working on approvals and connecting with the proper authorities. The goal is to create a trails network and access to green spaces and water that will be part of the legacy of the valley. Trails for Creston Valley has had tremendous support from local authorities and want to thank all three of Regional District of Central Kootenay directors for their ongoing dedication and support, including a $1,000 grant from Area B to help with some administrative costs. The people at the Ministry of Transportation, Justin Dexter with the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources, and the Lower Kootenay Band are also important partners. The society is just getting the wind in its sails but collaboration will make these projects happen. As support and enthusiasm for trails builds, sub-committees
have developed with champions to focus on specific projects. One group is focusing on signage and mapping for existing trails around the valley. We want to take advantage of the lovely October weather to tackle this. The society has four key projects on the go: •Giant Cedars Recreational Area: This exciting new trail will be located along Highway 3 toward the Salmo-Creston pass. Visitors will enjoy a hike through the pristine beauty of an old growth cedar forest with massive towering trees; •Goat River Cottonwood Trail: This peaceful trail is in the process of being formally approved, so the important area located along the Goat River can be utilized and preserved; •Lower Goat River Recreational Area: This area will provide clean and safe family access to the Goat River for day use. It will include designated parking, toilets, garbage facilities, a place to swim, walk the dog and go fishing within walking distance of town; and •Community Connection Trail: Through the Community Conversations process, the community has come together toward the common goal of a trail to connect Wynndel, Creston and Erickson. The society is actively pursuing this idea with the support of all our members and community partners. The newest project Trails for Creston Valley is partnering on is improvements to the old ferry landing site. With the support of Area C director Larry Binks and the trails society, the Teen Action

Candle Safety BY FIRE PROVENTION CANADA www.fiprecan.ca/candle-facts/ The misuse of candles is one of the major causes of home fires, especially during the winter and Christmas holidays. Candles provide great warmth and ambiance to any home. It is easy to forget that such a calming artifact is an open flame that can reach 1,400 °C. Most candle fires begin in the bedroom – with a mattress or bedding cited as the first item to ignite – except during the holidays, when more people use candles precariously too close to decorations. Furniture and combustible accessories are also cited as the first items in the home to catch firefrom a lit candle. STATISTICS REVEAL THAT THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF THESE FIRES ARE: • Leaving candles unattended. • Falling asleep while a candle is lit. • Using candles for light. • Candles located too close to burnable objects. • Candles knocked over by children, pets or sudden drafts. SAFETY TIPS • Extinguish candles when leaving the room or going to sleep. • Keep lit candles away from items that can catch fire such as toys, clothing, books, curtains, Christmas trees and paper decorations. • Place candles in sturdy, burn-resistant containers that won’t tip over and are big enough to collect dripping wax. • Don’t place lit candles near windows, where blinds or curtains may close or blow over them. • Don’t use candles in high traffic areas where children or pets could knock them over. • Never let candles burn out completely. Extinguish them when they get to within two inches of the holder or decorative material. • Never leave children or pets alone in a room with lit candles.
• Do not allow older children to light candles in their bedrooms. A forgotten candle or an accident is all it takes to start a fire. • During power outages, exercise caution when using candles as a light source. Many destructive fires start when potential fire hazards go unnoticed in the dark. • Never use a candle for light when fuelling equipment such as a camp fuel heater or lantern. • Keep candle wicks short at all times. Trim the wick to onequarter inch (6.4 mm). • Be wary of buying novelty candles. Avoid candles surrounded by flammable paint, paper, dried flowers, or breakable/meltable containers. • Extinguish taper and pillar candles when they burn to within two inches of the holder, and container candles before the last half-inch of wax begins to melt. • It is best to use flameless candles to eliminate potential fire hazards! • Use extreme caution when carrying a lit candle, holding it well away from your clothes and any combustibles that may be along your path.
This Halloween remember not to leave your candle decorations and jack-o-lanterns unattended!
OCTOBER 5 - 11, 2014
Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.
Working smoke alarms save lives! Test yours every month. SAFETY TIPS
The Law There are no legal standards or regulations for candles, including their make, design, safety features, location or use. Candles are not tested by a testing agency for safety before they are put on the market for you to buy.
• Install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. • It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound. • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. • There are two kinds of alarms. Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn about flaming fires. Photoelectric alarms are quicker to warn about smoldering fires. It is best to use both types of alarms in the home.
• A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove. • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers. • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

What is this inch-and-a-half-long insect? It’s pretty hard to introduce someone when you haven’t met them before or know very little about them. Likewise, the introduction of this insect personality is going to be quite short as previous to a warm early nighttime in late July I had never met this creature before. I stepped outside after dark and, besides noticing the outside light had been left on, I spotted a large insect clinging, wings folded along the back, in a resting position to the wood siding below the light. Wow, a seldom seen adult antlion. But, then, I thought it was a rather hefty creature compared to the few antlion adults I had previously observed. Antlion adults are kind of similar to Damselflies – weak fliers with very clear, shiny transparent long wings. Antlions, however, are in a much different group of insects. I had antlion in my head for a long time before I realized I was a way off track. Then, aha, from my memory bank up popped the
stoneflies and caddisflies. But they quickly checked off the list of possibilities. Actually it
Out There
Ed McMackin started to seem like there were no possibilities But then there was a hit! Dobsonfly, yes, but a female since this one has NO long “pinchers” or mandibles like the male. I saw that the female did have madibles but much smaller than those of the males. So, it could not be a male or female Dobsonfly. I started digging. Here I discovered that China has the world’s largest aquatic insect, that is, known to humans. I think this Dobsonfly like insect was about 9 cm. long when at rest with wings folded along the back. However, some have argued that it is not really the largest aquatic insect as it is only that size when an adult. The adults are terrestial and fly about for a few short days
while the immature stage is acquatic. So much for that! Back to my mystery insect which may not be a mystery to someone amongst you readers. In checking out the dobsonflies I discovered there were some more of those net or nervewinged insects, Neuroptera. One very similar to the Dobsonfly is the much smaller alderfly. The immatures are also acquatic and are, or at least at one time, were used for fishing bait. But there was still a problem. I noticed that most of the illustrations depicted alderflies with long filament, thread-like antennae. My vistor to the outside light had antennae that were curved down and nearly clubbed shaped at the tip. So, I am still not sure what to say next to introduce my guest except to tell you it also had a very interesting reaction when lightly touched. It would raise its wings and then sit very still with wings up as if to fly. Perhaps it is one of those extant or very rare forms of the Alderfly or someother related member in the nerve-winged clan of insects.

FIRST CRESTON SCOUTS This summer, the First Creston Scouts enjoyed a trip to Windsor International Guides and Scouts (WINGS) 2014, held Aug. 2-9 in Berkshire, U.K. Their trip started with two days in London to explore the city and get over jetlag. From there, they travelled to Windsor Great Park (weekend home of the Queen) for the week of camping. WINGS 2014 was an amazing event. The Creston group of 14 was hosted by a Scout troop from Yarnton (just outside Oxford) for seven days. They camped and enjoyed the daily activities with them, as well as 6,000 Scouts and Guides from over 40 countries — circus skills, caving, climbing, swimming and paddling, helping with local charities and learning about development issues around the world. It was an incredible experience for Creston’s young people, connecting them with youth from many different countries and backgrounds but who all had similar interests.
The Scouts had many chances to showcase Canada and Creston and did the valley proud! They packed over flags, gifts, pins, Creston Valley posters and brochures, maps, Canadian money, dried cherries, pancake mix and Canadian maple syrup. For one very busy afternoon, they handed out pins and fed people mini pancakes dipped in real maple syrup. Many came back for seconds or thirds! In addition to the World Fair afternoon, they supplemented a Canada display in the central headquarters of the camp and the youth acted as ambassadors everywhere they went each day. People were very excited to meet Canadians with our funny accents and words. “And you are so friendly!” they would say. Words cannot express completely how this experience has changed the lives of Creston’s Scouts, nor can they adequately express their appreciation to the community for making this trip a reality. It truly was an experience none of them will ever forget.

Families who dirt bike together are totally together
By Alexandra Straub With the distractions of technology, smartphones, television programming, life, video games and more, it can be tough to find an activity in which the whole family can participate let alone enjoy. Age differences between children, gender, and general interests can vary greatly. My brother and I couldn’t be more opposite. Rest assured, there is hope and some of it comes in the form of two wheels. Scott Ponuick, marketing and promotions manager at Popkum Motor Park, in Rosedale, raced snowmobiles and ATVs as a child. And he road raced for many years of his life. He also grew up around the racetrack as his father raced stock cars. You could say motor oil runs through his veins and that motor oil has since been passed to his family. He mentions: “Before we had kids, I bought Christine (his wife) a bike; a Honda XR 86,” since she showed interest in the sport. For all the time that Christine cheered on her husband, it was time

for her to get in her own saddle. He fixed it up and it ran like new. She loved it. She explains: “It was fun watching him, but I’d rather be out there too!” Not too long after that, Christine became pregnant with their first child. “Before she (Taylor) was even born, we started talking about what bike we should get her and getting gear ready for her for when she was old enough,” Christine says. By the time Taylor was two years old she was on two wheels. With training wheels, of course. Then again, you could argue that she was on two wheels much before then because the only way she’d fall asleep as a baby was when her dad would ride her around the back yard in a harness. “She always wanted to get on the bike,” Christine recounts. “Taylor always wanted daddy to take her around.” continued on page 27 Now that Taylor is six and

driveway her little brother, Chase, is three, they both can ride their own bikes and have a blast doing it. At home, the kids are on Oset electric trials bikes. They don’t make any noise so they can play in the back yard until the batteries run out! There’s also a “throttle” modulator that makes sure the kids can’t get themselves into too much trouble. Scott and Christine consider themselves very lucky because everyone in the family loves to get out onto the trails, even if they aren’t moving very quickly! “It’s so cool to see Taylor and Chase progress,” says Scott. Even though Scott’s employment brings him to Popkum Motor Park weekly, he said that he’d still take the kids on dirt bikes regardless. “It’s such a great way to build motor skills, coordination, a love of the outdoors and you just create so many memories together.” He talks about the families who come out to the Park. Moms, dads, and kids alike take to the track. “There’s one family that comes to mind… I’ve watched the kids grow up over the last 12 years. For example, the dad and daughter

will show up, and then they’ll turn laps together. And then they pull over and chat about their laps and the things they can work on.” Christine comments: “You value time together more when you’re all doing something that you all love. As a full-time working mom, I’m so grateful we have riding as a common bond.” Some might be concerned about safety when it comes to speed and kids. But like any other sport, with the proper equipment, training and supervision, dirt biking is quite safe. And did I mention fun? “I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day,” Christine remarks.
