FIRED UP
Saanich Fire to swear in eight new recruits Daniel Palmer News staff
Dep. Chief Stephen Hanna remembers the ghostly sight of hundreds of books still pulsating red on their shelves in the aftermath of the 1989 Nellie McClung library fire. In the thick smoke, Hanna – then just a novice Saanich firefighter – could only make out the boots of a figure manning a fire hose in the centre of the smouldering mess. “There was my captain, standing amongst it all, calmly spraying water,” Hanna says. “That image just stuck with me.” In the coming months, eight new Saanich Fire Department recruits will likely experience similar moments, now that they’ve completed an intensive six-week training session to join the 120-member department. The cohort includes five replacements due to retirements and three new recruits – including the department’s first two female firefighters – to serve the diverse 103-kilometre District of Saanich. “We haven’t had an intake this large since 1971, and a lot of it has to do with attrition,” said Fire Chief Mike Burgess. “We’ve seen a lot of movement in the last five years, I think we’ve had 27 retirements. So our department is quite young now.” The title of Firefighter is misleading, Hanna says, as only 30 per cent of the department’s 4,100 incident responses last year were directly related to fire.
Don Denton/News staff
New Saanich firefighters Bonnie Fiala and Phil Reaume practice their rope work behind the No. 2 Firehall on Elk Lake Drive. The two are in their sixth and final week of training before they join the Saanich Fire Department. Car accidents, hazardous material spills, medical and marine emergencies are just some of the calls that require new firefighters to arrive on the job with a small mountain of certification and training. “A lot of people start this job believing they’re going to go from fire to fire, but what they discover is it’s hours of boredom made up of minutes of sheer terror,” Hanna said. “We should really be called Saanich emergency services.” Experience and maturity are now significant factors in choosing new recruits as well. This year’s novices range in age from their late-20s to 39-year-old Brian Swanson, who served in both the military and as a Saanich police officer before making the switch to Saanich fire. “It was pretty close to a year where I was considering the right decision for me and my family,” says Swanson, on a lunch break from rope rescue training at Fire Hall No. 1, behind the municipal hall. “I already had all the requirements from my previous career, but just for simple career enjoyment and lifestyle, it just fit. I’m ecstatic to start. I can’t wipe the smile off my face.” Heather Jaques, a former flank who twice

She represented Canada at the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup. attended the Rugby World Cup with Canada’s national rugby union team, turned her drive to a different competition last year when she decided to compete against 130 candidates for one of eight spots at Saanich FD. Jaques, a Saskatchewan native, spent
some time in the construction industry before a fire fighter at her gym recommended she look into the field. “After I retired from rugby, I didn’t really know where to go,” Jaques says. “I’ve always been very team-oriented, physically active, I like working outside, and this kind of hands-on career really appealed to me.” Whatever stigma may exist about trailblazing in a department full of men is brushed off by Jaques as a relic of a past time. “We had an open house a few weeks ago, where a bunch of veterans told us how happy they are to see us in the department,” she says. All firefighters start in fire suppression – two day, two nights, four off – and some can spend the majority of their careers in that role. Once in, firefighters can move into staff development, communications, emergency management, mechanical teams and more, Hanna says. “It’s really the candidates themselves who raise the bar, they’re all thirsty for the job,” Burgess says. Shining a light on the good and the bad Victoria Foundation launches annual Vital Signs report on Greater Victoria Jennifer Blyth Black Press
The cost of living has clearly emerged as the No. 1 concern in the minds of people living and working in the Capital Region. The Victoria Foundation revealed this and many other informational nuggets at today’s launch of this year’s Vital Signs report at the Hotel Grand Pacific. In the “community report card,” 52.4 per cent of respondents identified cost of living as Victoria’s chief issue, up from 47 per cent last year, Victoria Foundation executive officer Sandra Richardson said in an interview, noting one-quarter said they were working more than one job. The ninth edition of report compiles research and survey responses that offer information about issues affecting the region, with the goal of providing insight, prompting debate and inspiring philanthropy. Food security iniatives are showing measurable growth with community support over last year, reports Vital Signs. Region Community Wellbeing Survey, based on the conceptual framework of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing from the University of Waterloo, measures the subjective wellbeing of Greater Victorians in eight quality of life categories: community vitality, democratic engagement, education, environment, healthy populations, leisure and culture, living standards and time use.

Recognizing that traditional markers like GDP fail to paint the whole picture of community wellbeing, the index bridges the gap by using primary research to also reflect areas such as social and environmental well-being, Richardson said. “I think it gives the report a whole lot of extra fibre,” Richardson said. “It really mirrors some of the things people have been tell-

In addition to cost of living, additional issues of concern included related issues of housing (21.1 per cent), mental illness (20.3 per cent), homelessness (16.5 per cent), employment (15.5 per cent), and health care (14.7 per cent). Additional issues rounding out the top 12 included municipal amalgamation, addictions, transportation, poverty, sewage treatment and community planning/ development. Identifying the positive aspects of life in the region as well as concerns, the natural environment topped the list of the best things about living in the Greater Victoria at 47 per cent, followed by climate (38.6 per cent) air quality (23.2 per cent), friends and family (21.1 per cent), a feeling of safety (19 per cent) and walkability (18.5 per cent). Capitalizing on these and other positive aspects of living in the region, 88 per cent of respondents identified themselves as being

Fire prevention week in Canada - From Fire Prevention Canada
It’s Fire Prevention Week in Canada, Oct. 5 to 11, and statistics reveal 78 per cent of deaths from fire occur in the home, with most of the fatalities taking place between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., while occupants are asleep. It is critical to develop an escape plan. During a fire, smoke is black and very thick, making it impossible to see. There is no time for indecision; an entire home can be engulfed within five minutes. Most people are killed by smoke inhalation, not the flame of the fire. The heat of the fire is extremely intense and can kill. Install smoke alarms on every level. Keep smoke alarms clean and dustfree, checking them monthly. Replace batteries yearly and alarms every 10 years. In order to be able to react quickly to fire, draw a floor plan of your home showing all possible exits from each room. Where possible, plan two exits. Make certain that everyone understands that if they hear the smoke alarm, or someone shouting “FIRE,” they should immediately evacuate the home. Designate a meeting place outside your home in the event of a fire. Visit Fire Prevention Canada at fiprecan.ca/home for more information. 4_NE101G114

Ballot question gets go-ahead Motion hailed as ‘momentous,’ but amalgamation option ambiguous Daniel Palmer
question that asks residents if they support studying various models of integration for the region’s 13 municipalities. The study would be funded by the province, and municipal councils would then choose how they want to proceed with those options.
News staff
Saanich residents will be presented with a ballot question at the Nov. 15 municipal election, though it won’t be specific to amalgamation. The unanimously endorsed question, put forward by Mayor Frank Leonard, differs significantly from that of other Capital Region municipalities. It will ask: Do you support Council initiating a communitybased review of the governance structure and policies within Saanich and our partnerships within the Region? “I appreciate you’re all supporting this,” Leonard told councillors after they offered ringing endorsements of the motion at Monday’s council meeting. “Once it’s approved, (this question) will become owned by the community and the agenda will be set by the community, not by council.” Amalgamation proponents had been pushing Saanich to approve a non-binding ballot

Mayoral candidate Richard Atwell. So far, Victoria, Esquimalt, Sidney, Central Saanich, North Saanich, Langford and Oak Bay have agreed to ask residents about amalgamation at the ballot box. During discussion before the vote, Coun. Judy Brownoff said a governance review will bring Saanich in line with modern governments and offer an opportunity to highlight Saanich’s current regional partnerships.
“The motion is appropriate in that we’ve had some issues around some governance things. We used to have presentations, now we don’t,” she said. Brownoff said Saanich puts $1.5 million annually into the Capital Regional District’s Arts Committee, and that other regional financial commitments need to be better publicized. Coun. Susan Brice called the ballot question “momentous,” and said it will provide for broad community input. “There can be no limit to the suggestions that may arise,” she said. Saanich mayoral candidate Richard Atwell criticized the decision and said council is avoiding asking residents about amalgamation by asking a less relevant question. “Council is proposing a Saanich-made solution that will be paid for by Saanich taxpayers, when everyone else is pursuing a straw poll that will engage the provincial government and allow for a provincially funded study on amalgamation options,” Atwell said. “The most interesting part for me is that even with this, the public didn’t have input. They did this at council, not at committee of the whole.” The municipal election takes place Nov. 15. editor@saanichnews.com

OUR VIEW
Easy reforms for Saanich On Monday, Saanich council patted itself on the back for approving a ballot question that will ask residents if they support a governance review of the municipality after the Nov. 15 election. Mayor Frank Leonard has said the ensuing public input process would be costly, comprehensive and allow residents a say on all sorts of subjects (including the dreaded amalgamation debate). To kick things off, here are a few suggestions to council that won’t require months of public feedback to implement: 1. Get rid of the mayoral throne in council chambers and create a room that feels accessible, welcoming and equal for all councillors. Lining up council and staff like they’re in a medieval court doesn’t encourage open debate and discussion. 2. Conclude in-camera business prior to the public portion of council meetings, so that when meetings conclude, citizens can directly mingle with councillors and the mayor. Other Capital Region municipalities use this method and it breeds public engagement. 3. Allow the public to address council at the start of council meetings. Create time limits so meetings don’t run late. It will only be overwhelming when there’s controversial business on the table, which is exactly when residents need to weigh in. Three easy, overdue steps that don’t require public endorsement but will undoubtedly lead to better public engagement. Don’t break the bank on easy solutions.
No. 1. Get rid of mayoral throne in council chambers

of Narnia, performing the roles of characters they met along the way, including Mr. Tumnus, the Beaver family, the evil White Witch and the mighty lion Aslan. “It feels weird and exciting and fun,” Williams said of portraying all those characters. “There’s amazing sound design and technical supports, but it’s Mack and I. And the audience is another performer because they have to get into it. … We ask the audience to stretch their imagination and imagine you’re seeing a lion. Imagine you’re in a forest and it’s all winter.” In 2013, the husband and wife duo played an engaged couple in Pacific Theatre’s Jessie-winning production of The Foreigner, and this past summer they were historical interpreters performing as a gold rush couple at Barkerville Historic Town. “We joke that we are a two-for-one package and are always looking out for shows we can do together,” Williams said. UVic’s Phoenix Theatre opens the season each year by celebrating the success of their theatre graduates with their Spotlight on Alumni. “It’s our first time doing a show here in five years,” Williams said. “I want to go to all my favourite little shops, visit Caddy Bay. Just be here and visit family and friends.” The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe runs Oct. 9 to 18.

University of Victoria theatre alumni who met at UVic’s Department of Theatre as fresh-faced first year students in 2004, return to the stage of the Phoenix Theatre with C.S. Lewis’ classic Narnia tale The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. “I saw a production of it when I was really young, I think I was 12,” said Kaitlin Williams. “It was the first time I’d seen anything like that.” The woman played a little girl, old woman and even male characters convincingly. “Fast forward 15 years and I got to do it myself, which was a pinch me moment,” she said. “Then they cast Mack (Gordon) my husband and then we get to bring it back to UVic where we met. Oprah would call this a full circle moment.” The two married in 2011 and were cast in 2012 for the two-actor Lion Witch and Wardrobe for Pacific Theatre and this month they bring it to UVic’s Phoenix Theatre. “They let Mack and I bring it over here … so Mack and I are producing it ourselves, which is another challenge,” Williams said. “We worked together (at UVic) before we were married so we’re used to working together. We’re pretty good at it.” This version of the story sees Peter and Lucy, now grown-up, return to the room and the old wardrobe where, years before, their adventures began. Here they relive their memories

Carriers more than just delivering news Carrier Appreciation Day Travis Paterson News staff
Sebastien Schwarz is nearing the half decade mark as a twice-weekly carrier of the Saanich News, a considerable feat considering he’s just 14 years old. “It’s been almost five years on the route and I’ll keep doing it until I get a part time job maybe, which won’t happen until at least next year,” he said. Schwarz says taking on the Holmes Street route, which he delivers near Cook and Quadra streets, has been a great way to become part of the neighbourhood. “The best part is getting to know the community and your neighbours. When we moved in, I knew nobody, now I know the neighbourhood and they know me as well,” he said. “I also do mowing and other yard jobs in the area which I’ve been able to get thanks to the paper route.” Saanich News is celebrating its carriers and circulation staff as part of International Carrier Appreciation Week, which recognizes the importance and hard work of newspaper circulation staff, drivers and carriers who are steeped in the newspaper industry and its rich tradition. “Carriers are such a fundamental part of our industry,” said Saanich News editor Dan Palmer. “The job is a great opportunity for young people to gain experience and carriers of all ages benefit from the opportunity to connect with the community.” As for Schwarz, he’s been investing the money with his parents’ help, and is considering putting some of it towards driver training and a new car, when he reaches that age. Right now he’s in Grade 9 at Spectrum Community school where he’s in line for the trades program. It offers a wellrounded foundation for the Camosun College trades program he is already focused on.

The dash is less cluttered yet offers more information. Do you sense a theme here? Consider that the design phase of this truck took four years and the testing was the most intense ever. The result? Kia has an Electric Soul By Bob McHugh
Kia joins the growing list of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers with Soul EV, a clever adaptation of its tall 5-door compact with the funky styling. Although still a small slice of the overall car market, EV sales are growing rapidly and so is the public charge station infrastructure that’s crucial to its success, especially in urban areas. A digital readout showed 187 km of driving range available as we headed out on a test loop around Metro Vancouver. And after about 30 minutes of, no special treatment, driving with frequent stops, starts, hill climbs and descents, the Soul EV showed 162 km was still available. That's relevant, as the Soul EV’s officially rated driving range is 149 km. In addition to being quiet and fuel-free, Soul EV effectively matches the practical user features of its gasoline counterpart. It can seat 4 to 5 passengers and has the same large rear cargo area. Kia's polymer (electrolyte) lithium ion battery pack is compact and easier to hide than others, as is can be molded into different shapes. In Soul EV it's centrally fitted under the seats and a raised rear floor pan. The gasoline engine is replaced by a 109 horsepower liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor that can generate a whopping
210 lb-ft of torque. That's 59 lb-ft more than the 2.0-litre gasoline engine version of Soul. Standing starts were not as jumpy as other electric vehicles tend to be and the overall performance of the electric drivetrain was impressively smooth. Charger ports for the battery pack are hidden behind a hinged cover in the front grille. The smaller port accepts either a 120 volt (level 1) or a 240 volt (level2) charge connector. A portable level 1 unit is stored in the vehicle and Kia Canada will also provide Soul EV buyers with a level 2 charge unit (made by Bosch) for home installation, free of charge. The charger unit can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool the Soul EV, while plugged into the grid. You can also program it to start or complete charging at a certain time. The level 1 charger plugs into any electrical outlet, but can take up to 24-hours to fully recharge the w battery pack. A level 2 charger (with 30 amp service) cuts the maximum recharge time to under
SPECIAL
ROAD - READY
5-hours. And a level 3 fast charge station can pump-in an 80 per cent charge in less than 30 minutes. We didn’t take it out on the freeway, but the Soul EV seemed very stable (it’s heavier then the gas engine Soul) and Kia claims a top speed of 145 km/hour. Kia also claims that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour faster (by 4 seconds) than a Nissan Leaf. It’s agile and peppy, with lots of initial get up and go, but it’s also no dragster. The two-tone gray interior theme came with attractive and contrasting blue stitching. Extensive use of bio-friendly interior materials also makes Soul EV the most eco-friendly vehicle made by Kia. It feature materials derived from organic substances such as sugar cane, corn, cellulose, and wood powder. Soul EV is only available through selected Kia dealers in major Canadian urban centres (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). Unlike Quebec and Ontario, however, BC’s incentive program for eco-friendly vehicles ran out of cash back in March of this year. Soul EV does qualify for an $8,000 federal government rebate and that certainly helps make the purchase price more palatable. The Kia Soul EV definitely rocks and is a must-drive for anyone considering an EV in this price range.

City of light shines brightly on dream machines By Zack Spencer
Paris, France – The Paris Auto Show is one of those must-visit events for those of us charged with reporting on the latest and greatest new vehicles. So many manufacturers now develop products for a world market so these early European shows often offer a glimpse of what’s coming next to our shores. Here are five machines that caught my eye.

Let’s start with a dream machine. The Lamborghini Asterion concept car was certainly a showstopper.
Sidestepping the current design approach of angular shapes with hard edges, this new Lambo has a more curvaceous look that almost mimics a front engine car. What is wedged in the middle of this exotic is a hybrid system that marries a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine with three electric motors (Two in the front producing all wheel drive and another in the transmission for full electric drive capability), producing a whopping 910hp with acceleration that will see this car run to 100km in just three seconds. The Asterion is capable of running on just electric power for roughly 30km and, providing silent driving in a wickedly sexy machine. This is a just a concept at this point but with
mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years.
VW Golf Alltrack
Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards all-wheel-drive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to appear with this option. Take the popular VW Golf wagon, soon to be available in Europe with AWD and a slightly higher ground clearance. Called the Alltrack, this more rugged
Lamborghini Asterion looking and capable VW will certainly appeal to buyers of the Subaru Outback or Audi Allroad. In North America, we don’t buy many

wagons but we certainly love when manufacturers add a slightly higher ride-height, lower body cladding plus AWD and call them a crossover vehicle. Sales jump. Imagine a pure electric, three-wheel, scooter-like vehicle, with a fixed roof, steering wheel and can drive up to 45km/h with 50km of electric range. The Toyota i-Road attracted big crowds when it was demonstrated at this year’s Paris Show. The small wheel at the rear of the i-Road pivots at low speed for amazing maneuverability, plus when driven at higher speeds the entire vehicle tilts over like a motorcycle with the front wheels rotating independently of each other. It looks odd and must feel odd to drive but the upside is covered driving, without a helmet, and emissions free transportation. The i-Road is being tested in Japan and will be used in the French city of Grenoble as part of a vehicle-sharing program. This type of vehicle already exists in Europe but the tilting and pivoting elements make it unique. This would not be popular on our wider roads in North America but the i-Road will fit right in on Europe’s busy streets.

The Chrysler Groups’ parent company Fiat is at it again, taking the best that its European brands have to offer and marrying them with American brands. The Fiat 500L has had a mild reception here in North America so now they have taken the same platform and produced the Jeep Renegade. To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat. The 500X will be available with front wheel drive (FWD) or AWD and a variety of engine and transmission options in Europe. The engine choices have not been divulged for our market but expect to see the 170hp 1.4 turbo 4-cylinder and the 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engines here. The Fiat 500L has not been a hit for Fiat but, yet again, add a more rugged look and the sales will likely follow.
Volvo XC90
Will the introduction of an all-new, full-size XC90 SUV be enough to save Volvo here in North America? Time will tell but the crowds at the Volvo stand in Paris were packed with people combing over every pert of this attractive SUV. It has been over ten years since Volvo introduced the original XC90 and the years have not been good to this vehicle or the brand. Sales for the XC90 and Volvo in general have been pathetic in North America. This new XC90 has a lot going for it and Volvo hopes it will help revive the brand. The XC90 will be sold in Canada with AWD in the T6 or T8 engine variants. Both are turbocharged and supercharged and are matched to an 8-speed automatic. The T6 has 320hp and the T8 comes with an additional 80hp electric motor for improved power and efficiency. The three-row design remains intact but the interior is larger for more space. The dash is a standout with a vertical iPad-like application in the centre for class-leading connectivity and usability. The price of the T6 will start at $60,700 and the T8 will start at $73,400. If this short list this isn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, check out my Paris gallery at drivewaybc.ca zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

GRAHAM KIA VICTORIA
Family Owned, Family Operated, Family Values
Contrary to general perception, most classic cars aren’t fragile flowers. In fact, many are anvil-tough, particularly American cars of the 1950s and 1960s, built with real Pennsylvania steel and very little plastic. But even these rolling bank vaults can be seriously screwed up by these five things: Non-use: This one is really is counterintuitive. When classic cars come to mind for many, the image of the trailer queen or museum piece looms large; in fact, most people think that these are the best cared-for cars. In actuality, they often turn out to be the most problematic cars when they are finally driven. Non-use is actually abuse — seals dry out and start to leak; gas gets stale and turns to varnish; batteries corrode when not removed; and tires get flat spots. Cars that are used and maintained on a regular basis, on the other hand, are often the happiest and most reliable old cars. Improper storage/rodents: This goes along with the above. Failure to drain fuel or use a stabilizer, not using jack stands, and making certain that anti-freeze is up to snuff all contribute to storage-related deterioration. But perhaps the most destructive force has four teeth and a naked tail — rats and mice, the same rodents that wiped out half the population of Europe by carrying Bubonic plague, can really mess with your classic car. They chew upholstery and insulation to make nests (in which they pee, poop and reproduce, not necessarily in that order), and worst of all, they chew on wiring harnesses where it isn’t apparent until something smokes or catches fire from behind the dash of your 1965 Mustang. Road Salt: Most everyone who has taken chemistry knows that the reaction between Sodium Chloride and steel yields iron oxide, more commonly known as rust. But few people truly realize how quickly the damage is done. Just one drive on a wet salty road will give your classic an ugly coating of surface rust on anything on the underside that is not well protected, like suspension parts, exhaust and even the frame. A season or two that lets salty mud penetrate the nooks and crannies of your car will almost certainly cause visible rust to erupt. And don’t think you’re immune because your car is fiberglass, there’s plenty of steel to rot away under the pretty plastic panels of your 1972 Corvette Stingray. Conversely, getting caught in the rain every now and then isn’t death for your classic, as long as nothing like carpets or trunk mats get soaked and stay wet. Some of the cleanest and most rust-free old cars we’ve seen come from the damp Pacific Northwest, where it snows little and road salt isn’t used. Old Tires: Most vintage cars don’t see 15,000 miles of use each year and, often, totally unsafe tires can look deceptively sound. In addition to tread wear, age, dry rot, flat spots and UV exposure can render tires unsafe. About six or seven years should be tops in terms of tire life, regardless of how the tires may look. A blowout or a thrown tread can not only threaten your life, it can severely damage your car severely as I found out first hand when an otherwise fine-looking tire threw a tread and put a football-sized dent in the lower quarter panel of a formerly pristine 1977 Datsun 280Z. Bad driving habits: The list of things that you can do to shorten the life of the major systems of a classic — from engine, transmission to differential — is long and beyond the scope of this article. But perhaps the most destructive thing you can do to a vintage car is to not let it warm up properly. I’ve witnessed tons of people who should know better start up a cold car and immediately zing it to the redline with the first shift. It’s painful to watch and even more painful to realize the harm that’s being done to the engine. Always drive gently until the car has reached normal operating temperature (usually around the mid-point of the temperature gauge). Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. Four goals in two games earned UVic Vikes Amanda Kurianowicz the latest Canada West Player of the Week award. The fifth year member of the University of Victoria women’s field hockey led the Vikes to back-to-back 3-0 wins over the Calgary Dinos, as Kurianowicz scored once Saturday (Oct. 4) and then all three for a hat trick on Sunday. Kurianowicz’s efforts put her atop the Canada West Player of the Week finalists, which draw from all Canadian Interuniversity sports. Swimmer to attempt world record Cowichan Lake open water swimmer plans 105-km route Travis Paterson News staff
Susan Simmons is one half of Victoria’s most prolific swimming duo and now she’s set her sights on a world record attempt, a 105-kilometre route up and down Cowichan Lake. “This is for sure. I have started training and have the pilots in place for the swim. I just have to select the official days in August,” Simmons said. Two months ago the 49-year-old data services manager from James Bay conquered the 70-kilometre Cowichan Lake Double with CFB military paramedic Alex Cape, 34. It took them about 32 hours to swim a 35-kilometre route, a touch longer than the length of Cowichan Lake, twice. Now Simmons is challenging the current flat
water (lake) distance world record held by Canadian Vicki Keith, who completed a 104-km doublecrossing of Lake Ontario in August 1987. “It took Keith 56 hours and 10 minutes, and I’m expecting this to take over 50 hours,” Simmons said. Cape’s commitment to the world record attempt is unknown at this point, as she awaits word on a surgery date to fix a torn ACL, an injury that predates the Cowichan Double. Simmons is launching a website for the swim attempt in November, which will document her training time in the pool. The website will allow anyone to create a profile and enter their swim training each day. Simmons originally began swimming to counter the effects of multiple sclerosis. She hopes to inspire people from across Canada to train along with her, and to join her for a leg of the swim during the attempt. “It will be interesting to see how far Canada can swim,” Simmons said.

Inspiring parents and children to be ‘heart-centred’ Meetup group among tools for parents looking to learn from others Angela Cowan News Gazette staff
For Colleen Adrian, helping other parents feel capable and confident in their parenting styles, helping them lead “authentic and heart-centred” lives, has become the driving passion in her life. To further that passion, she’s hosting a monthly Meetup group to bring parents together in a supportive and collaborative environment. Adrian, a retired nurse with her masters degree and over 20 years experience, has been writing about parenting, hosting workshops and coaching on a one-to-one basis for several years through her company Crystal Clear Living. She added the monthly meeting to “provide a place to create community and support for parents who are trying to do things differently.” “You can’t always parent children the same way (as others),” she says. “I think we have instincts about that, but there’s a lot of social pressure to do things a certain way. And there’s a lot of pressure for children to conform as well.” After giving birth to her son 10 years ago, Adrian left nursing to pursue alternative health practices.

She became a Reiki master and trained in specialized kinesiology and non-violent communication to learn to be the parent she had envisioned for herself. “I really wanted to change things, but I was finding it really hard. I went on quite an intense research journey myself.” Adrian is able to pass along the fruits of that research now, and teaches parents “how to get some clarity and access their own knowing.” “Sometimes we can be so hard on ourselves and think we’re bad parents,” she says. “(The meetup) gives a sense of not being alone.” Adrian focuses on giving parents effective communication and conflict resolution skills to strengthen their relationship with their children. “It’s about creating open, meaningful relationships with family. And it allows our children to stay connected and open-hearted. It’s about not being afraid to step out and be a Picasso or an Emily Carr. Not being afraid to just get out there and express yourself.” “We love our children so much and we really want them to live to their full potential.” The next monthly Meetup will be in the first week of November. Q:
I’m the only child (son) in our family with no ‘aging parent’ experience. I live in another province but have arranged to spend three weeks with them in the very near future. Can you tell me some signs that I should be aware of in case they shouldn’t be living alone any more?
A:
Some common signs that a move to a more supportive environment such as a retirement residence may be a good idea for your loved one(s), are: 1. Less active lifestyle and the tendency to stay home; becoming less socially engaged. 2. You notice a change in the quality of (their) communication or the frequency of communication. 3. You may see fewer invitations to their home and notice a change in visit patterns. 4. They have unopened bills and other mail. 5. Their home is unkempt, laundry or dishes are piling up. 6. They experience unexplained weight loss. 7. You notice unusual damage to their home or vehicle. 8. Bruises or other signs of trauma from falls or difficulty navigating around the house. If you do notice any of these signs, arrange a meeting with their family doctor. Depending upon the severity and extent of support required, start your research. A Senior Living Community may be an appropriate option, but certainly is not the only option. One very useful tool is the Seniors Serving Seniors publication. Helen Brown is your local Vancouver Island senior living expert. If you have any questions, or would like to chat, please contact Helen at Berwick Royal Oak, (250) 419-4012 or a email her at berwickroyaloak@berwickrc.com

Halloween costumes a challenge When my kids were small, the mere mention of Halloween stirred up a cauldron of angst. As the words, “What are you going to be for Halloween?” starting buzzing among the girls and their friends, I knew, inevitably, I would be called upon to create something obscure like a slug, or inappropriate Susan to the weather – “Yes! This delicate fairy needs to wear a coat!” – or just plain impossible. The low point was the year I “sewed” the aforementioned slug costume for my elder daughter. I can’t sew, and that pretty much sums up that experience. However, although my sewing skills never improved, I did get wiser. One year, a few months before the main event, I carefully considered the character Pippy Long Stocking. I mentioned Pippy and Halloween in the same breath, and it worked. Danica would LOVE to be Pippy! I bought a thrift store Pippy dress and red hair spray. I inserted a straightened coat hanger
into Danica’s hair, and then braided her long tresses around it. When Danica sewed her own patches onto the dress and apron, I felt like dropping to my knees in thanks. Sierra continued to grasp her childhood-long penchant for selecting one set of clothes and Lundy wearing them day after day, month after month. From her preschool adoration of a flowery, black-bodiced dress and Kindergarten addiction to Osh Kosh overalls, her fashion flair evolved in Grade One to a single pair of cut-off shorts with tattered tights and gumboots, and by this year, velour shirts and jeans. “So what do you want to be for Halloween?” I asked, crossing my fingers. “You know, ghosts are really exciting — you get to cut holes in a sheet and wear it over your head!” “I want to be a bat.” “A bat?” I said, trying to swallow my excitement. “But weren’t you a bat last year?” “Yup.”
I held my breath. “We, ah, might even have last year’s costume hanging around somewhere. The one you can wear a coat underneath.” “Yup.” You mean I don’t have to sew? I don’t have to traipse through drug stores and closets and dress-up boxes? I don’t have to cut and paste and plan? Bats are a really, really good thing. Maybe you could be one next year too, huh? Suddenly I liked Halloween! We zipped around the trick-or-treating block; the girls picked up several Caramilk bars (Danica doesn’t like chocolate so guess who got her bounty!) and did a trip through the Spook House. This was the first year the girls did Spook House. Sierra blazed through it, hoping to find something that would scare her, while Danica clung to my arm and squeezed her eyes shut at every corner. It was a fine evening. And when we got home I put away the Pippy costume, and began working right away on convincing Sierra to wear it next year. Susan Lundy is editor of Boulevard Magazine.
Balancing business and family: Q&A Colleen Lembcke has a full life running her own salon in Sooke (just moved from the West Shore) and jointly caring for her six children with her hubby.
Q How do you find time for
“you?”
A
I have to make time. It’s not easy, we have busy chaotic days, which is the normal in our house, so I just get out and do it. I don’t give into being tired. Playing soccer and exercising balances me. It’s not always the first thing I want to do at the end of a long day, and having six children makes it a challenge, but I know it’s my way of recharging, emotionally and physically.
Q
What are you reading right now? With your kids?
A
When I can find a few moments before falling asleep, I look forward to finishing my book, The KingMaker’s Daughter, by Philippa Gregory. With my children, we do most of our reading during homework time. For my son and I, we read books collected over the years with my girls: Dora the Explorer, Clifford, Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine. I have great little helpers who seem to really capture the adventures in the stories!
Q
What is your favourite family activity to share together?

We frequently visit Sooke Potholes in the summer. It’s so easy for us. We pack up the snacks and into the car for a quick 15 min. drive, for two hours of fun. But, if anything, my favourite activity is our free time spent together making dinner on Sunday. The girls help in the kitchen, bringing us together, and we have our girl talk.
Q
The part of your day you look forward to the most?
A
That would in the morning, 8:30 to 9:50 a.m. The girls are at school, and I have just over an hour before I start my day. Having one on one time with my son is awesome. The morning is almost the only time he will cuddle with his mommy, so I take it when I can get it!

Camosun reunion for leadership grads and students It’s been 20 yeras since Camosun College first offered its leadership development certificate program, and the school is holding a reunion to celebrate. Current students, graduates and their employers are invited to come together to celebrate the anniversary from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the third floor Atrium in the Liz Ashton Campus Centre of the Interurban campus. “This is a great opportunity for grads to reconnect with former classmates and instructors and to meet current students who will be the leaders of tomorrow,” said Patricia Larose, program coordinator. Camosun’s leadership development program was created to provide new and aspiring supervisors and/or leaders with current information and practical skills relevant to their career. Twenty years later, the program continues to be popular and offers students the opportunity to explore who they are as leaders. Students leave the program as individuals who are self-aware and skilled in the art of strategically and successfully leading people and projects in the modern work environment. This networking event will include hors d’oeuvres prepared by Camosun’s cook training program, as well as door prizes and a cash bar with beer and wine. A short program will begin at 6:15 p.m. For more information or to RSVP, contact program coordinator Patricia Larose by phone 250370-4565 or email larosep@camosun.ca. Uptown Place offers the expansive views of Saanich while offering all the amenities of a compact downtown.
Tri-Eagle Developments
Downtown feel, Uptown space Travis Paterson News staff
Bike, walk, car or bus, everything is easy about getting in and out of Uptown Place. The first phase of the two-building Saanich development overlooking Uptown shopping centre is nearly sold out. All 76 units will no doubt be full by the time they’re ready in December, says Travis Lee of TriEagle Developments. Marketing for the second building has begun, due in June 2015. “There’s one three bedroom left, it seems the one and three bedrooms are the fastest moving units in the building.” Single bedroom units for Uptown Place come in three floor plans starting at $250,000, while the remaining three bedroom suite available is $600,000. If there’s a downside to the open-space floor plans with panoramic Saanich views it’s the hum-
drum of traffic along the Pat Bay and Island highways below. But then again, being able to jump on either of Greater Victoria’s major traffic arteries in a matter of seconds is one heck of an access point. The same goes for the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails, as Uptown Place is situated near both, conveyor belts for regional cycling commuters. Uptown Place is the first Tri-Eagle development with a bike fixing station, in addition to bike storage. “The main attraction of building here is the walking distance to Uptown shopping centre, which, when you look at the density and services, offers everything a downtown centre offers,” Lee says. Uptown Place is smartly in line with Saanich’s official community plan for higher density and family developments, though there is nothing forced about it. The first floor of the four storey buildings are ideal family town homes with exterior entrances and patio yard areas, fenced in private yards. The

second, third and fourth floors are condos with one, two and three bedroom floor plans that maximize the surrounding views of Saanich and Victoria. “We’re Saanich developers, we identified the neighbourhood as one to invest in because of the shopping centre. It’s right on the Galloping Goose and Lochside intersection, with plenty of bike storage and the fixing station because we believe that’s who is interested in Uptown Place,” Lee said. Access to B.C. Transit will also become easier as the regional transportation hub plans to relocate to the area. “Everything is falling into place for this to be a high growth area,” Lee said. Next up for Tri-Eagle is the Thunderbird, an eight-storey residential mid-rise building in Royal Oak. Visit uptownplace.ca for more information. reporter@saanichnews.com

Stephanie Galitzine, right, awaits service in the Lambrick Park Lions’ first match (Friday, Oct. 3) since they won the 2013 AA provincial championship.
Lions leap into AAA Travis Paterson News staff
After a four-year build up to the Lambrick Park Lions’ B.C. AA volleyball championship in 2013, the school has been bumped to the AAA level. “Too many Grade 12 girls in our school I guess,” said Stephanie Galitzine, one of seven seniors on the team. The Lions finished seventh in the Camosun Char-
gers’ organized high school tournament Oct. 3 to 5. Though the Lions jump to AAA from AA it should make little difference in terms of results. That said, it won’t be like last year, when Lambrick routinely slayed the best AA, AAA and AAAA teams in B.C. “We know we lost some good players, and other teams know we lost them too, so we’ll see where we’re at once we get a little further into the season,” Galitzine said.
Gone are four of the greatest volleyballers to ever play at Lambrick, the Fayad sisters, Shimen to NCAA, Thana to St. Michaels University School (where she’s ineligible to play), Jasmine Strandlund to Camosun and Emma Entzminger to NCAA. “We’re a lot stronger than I think people expect,” Galitzine added. The Lions host the AAA playoffs beginning Oct. 31. reporter@saanichnews.com

Continued from A3 Ultimately, the report helps expose areas of interest and concern in the community, including gaps where funds and programs are needed. “I think we’re starting to really see the impact of how the report is being used,” Richardson said. In 2012, the Vital Signs cover questioned “Do our kids have a healthy future?” looking at issues such as activity, obesity and Type 2 diabetes. From that, the Victoria Foundation partnered with the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence to pilot the ABCs of Physical Lit-
eracy for 175 children at the Cridge Centre and today, the initiative counts 3,300 participants throughout the region. The impact of these and other initiatives, plus the awareness raised by these discussions, is seen in this year’s numbers: Vitals Signs reports that 91 per cent of youth ages 12 to 19 reported spending their leisure time being physically active or moderately active, up from 77 per cent in 2012. And from last year’s Vital Signs Food Security issue, a new food funding network emerged in which 43 partnerships granted $1.6 million to

support 93 local food security initiatives, Richardson says. Also released is Youth Vital Signs, which gives youth a voice about the issues important to them. At the same time, one of the interesting results from both reports is how in sync both youth and older adults are about the issues of the day. “They really see things from a very similar point of view,” Richardson said.
