Kristin Svendsen, Mitsuki Takayama, Nonoka Fujita and Camika Bell enjoy dinner together on Tuesday evening at Centennial Hall. The evening was arranged for the Ohtaki and Lake Cowichan delegates, visitors and families on the Japanese delegates’ last evening in Lake Cowichan. The Ohtaki group was in Lake Cowichan for four days of community events and cultural exchange.

Community Connections business showcase Aspen Gainer

LAKE COWICHAN GAZETTE

This Saturday at 10 a.m. head down to Centennial Hall in Lake Cowichan for Community Connections: A Business Showcase. This local business symposium is free for attendees and boasts $400 in door prizes. Attendees from around the lake will find displays from almost 40 local businesses like South Shore Cabinetry and Gerald’s Specialty Foods, and from the eight sponsor businesses. “It’s more than a trade show. We’ve invited artisans as well because we have some really amazing artisans in this community,” said Glenda Osborne-Burg, organizer of the Community Connections showcase. Businesses had to pay to participate

and the 40 spaces at the showcase were, at the time of writing, almost sold out. The showcase was sponsored by eight local businesses and individuals. “We’ve raised about $800 in sponsorships, plus another $400 or so in door prizes,” said Burg. With almost 40 businesses in attendance at the showcase, it is a good way to start off Canadian Small Business Week (Oct. 19-24) and get a feel for the local business community. “We may not be able to compete with the big box stores, but what we can do is offer specialty items that you can’t find in the bigger conglomerates,” said Burg. When you arrive at the hall, you will be given a program complete with a passport. “What we ask you to do is to visit at least 10 exhibitors, and each exhibitor you visit will put a stamp

in your passport. That gives you eligibility for the door prizes,” said Burg. You don’t have to remain in attendance to win. Door prizes include gift baskets from Country Grocer and Island Pharmacy, plus $100 and a one-year-free checking account from Island Savings. As well, you will be able to vote for the best exhibitor at the showcase. The exhibitor who gets the most votes will receive the Community Connections People’s Choice Award. “This is the first (Community Connections showcase) and judging from the response that we’ve received it will certainly be continued next year,” said Burg. Visit Centennial Hall this Saturday to learn more about local businesses in the community and help make this first showcase a success.

17 school trustee candidates for SD 79 Peter Rusland NEWS LEADER

The most familiar face at Cowichan’s next school-board table could be Ladysmith’s longtime mayor, and regional chairman, Rob Hutchins. The former Ladysmitharea teacher has chalked his name on district 79’s slate of 17 trustee candidates, seeking four-year terms in seven desks Nov. 15. Victoria dropped that number from the previous nine trustee seats in Cowichan. The district’s former school board was fired by the education ministry after submitting a controversial deficit budget to protest perstudent funding levels. Of the 17 candidates for trustee, five are from the fired board; some of the others have previous political experience.

BELOW ZERO

Newcomers include Dana Arthurs, Kayla Barrett, Connie Buckner, Keith Chicquen, Roger Chin, Elizabeth Croft, Joanne de Lure, Randy Doman, and Amy Matamba. Incumbents, or familiar school-board faces, looking for election include Barb de Groot, Deb Foster, Ellen Oxman, Amrik Prihar, Cathy Schmidt, Candace Spilsbury, and Joe Thorne. Then-trustees Foster and Oxman voted in favour of the budget that got the board fired. Prihar, Schmidt and Spilsbury were from the minority opposed. Cowichan’s former nine trustees, elected in 2011, were replaced by appointed trustee Mike McKay. He helmed a pack of public meetings to gather public opinion about which valley schools to close amid locally declining student enrolments.

Preparations for the Youbou Haunted House and Halloween events at Youbou Hall are already underway. “We wanted to start off early so that we aren’t rushed in the days before Halloween,” says Vicki Ordano, Events Assistant at Youbou Community Hall. by the Youbou Volunteer Fire Department, and the grande finale, fire works sponsored by Cowichan Lake Recreation and the Youbou Volunteer Fire Department. Ordano says that they welcome volunteers to help with set up and judging. This year, however, they also need a group to take over the fourth room of the haunted house. “I’ll give them a hand in any way I can, because I really want to make this good for the kids. Anything that they need, if I can

supply it or be here, then I will.” Ordano also needs help with decorating the first room. The Youbou Haunted House and Halloween events start at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31 and are open to anyone around the lake. According to Ordano they get attendees from all over. “The kids usually have a really great time,” says Ordano. “It’s fun for everybody.” If you want to decorate or volunteer, contact Ordano at 250745-3712 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.

funding and the local sponsorship there will be enough funds to create a minimum of 1,000 calendars which will be distributed free of charge to residents. “This funding is very important to an expensive project like a full-colour local calendar,” stated Pauline Thompson, treasurer of the Kaatza Art Group. “So many of the not-forprofit organizations are asking our small business base for financial support that they can’t give very much to any specific project.” The calendar will feature photographs of the local area shot by local people. “The idea is to celebrate the wonderful views and the creative efforts of the people. It is amazing how many great photographers and captivating scenes we have for a smaller

community,” explained Puckrin. This year there won’t be prizes for the winning photographs, as the Kaatza Art Group is putting all the funds into calendar production costs. The judging, assembly and distribution will all be done on a volunteer basis. Every winning photograph will be credited and a copy of the calendar will be given to those 13 lucky photographers. If you want to be sure you get all the calendars you want you can order extra copies (at a cost of $5 each) before Nov. 7. All special orders have to be pre-paid. It would be a great gift at Christmas for family out of town, for those parties where you need to bring a small gift or simply to send to contacts who might be

encouraged to visit our town. Submit your entries (no entry fee) by emailing photographs to Loretta@ puckrin.com. Please put the word ‘calendar’ in the subject line. You can start sending your submissions right now, and the closing date is Oct. 31, so get yours in before Halloween! The winners will be notified by Nov. 7 and the final calendars are expected by Dec. 10. “We invite everyone to enjoy the calendars and show them off to all your friends, family and visitors,’ concluded Puckrin. “If the community agrees that this is a good project, we will undertake to do a calendar every year. What better way to celebrate our little bit of paradise?” –submitted by Kaatza Art Group

Chimney safety tips

Submit your local photos for community calendar Why would the Kaatza Art Group be promoting a calendar which doesn’t feature any of their artwork? Because they love their community and feel it is undervalued. The idea for the calendar came from a one-time government grant made available through Arts and Culture. “It was a very strange series of events,” comments Kaatza Art Group president, Loretta Puckrin. “One of the originally targeted communities on the mainland was unable to achieve their goals. This left some funding that had to be distributed. Because of our close relationship with the Cowichan Valley Arts Council we became eligible for a portion of the funding.” Between the federal

Clean your chimney Chimney fires are caused by a buildup of soot and other byproducts of wood burning. Install a chimney cap A chimney cap is a square piece of metal with wire-mesh underneath that prevents build up of flammable debris. Repair damage Loose bricks or a damaged chimney lining can cause a chimney fire to get out of hand. Use appropriate wood Soft or green wood gives off creosote. You should burn hard, seasoned wood that has been split and dried for at least 6 months. Real-life lessons… Be sure your chimney is clean. The creosote in dirty chimneys can and does catch fire. Be sure that your address is visible from the street. We can’t help you if we can’t find you. -submitted by YVFD

It’s that time of year again when the family gathers in the living room to enjoy the delicious warmth of the fireplace. As you sit down for a glass of something tasty in front of the fire, it’s important to think about chimney safety to keep your fires enjoyable. Dos and Don’ts • Do check with the company that installed your stove or fireplace for proper operation. • Do burn properly seasoned hardwood. • Do have your chimney inspected once a year. • Don’t use lighter fluid to start fires. • Don’t use coal in a woodstove or fireplace. • Don’t burn artificial logs in a woodstove unless they’re specifically designed for such use. • Don’t burn treated lumber, trash, or anything other than wood in your fireplace.

B.C. wood moves up China’s value chain Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS

When B.C.’s wood products trade mission visited Nanjing, China five years ago, government and industry representatives watched lumber being hauled by labourers with ropes onto the roofs of a vast expanse of concrete apartment buildings. Trusses were built using hammers and handsaws, to replace thousands of roofs damaged by the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Builders were pleased with the new method, which replaced angle iron pulled up to the roofs and welded into trusses. When B.C.’s annual delegation returned to Nanjing this Thanksgiving weekend for its annual Asia sales trip, Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the roof reconstruction work continues. But now wood construction has become more sophisticated in Jiangsu Province, a centre of electronics and other industries whose gross domestic product is half as much as all of Canada. “They’re doing residential properties, they’re also doing

recreational properties, the villas, planned communities,” Thomson said in a phone interview from Nanjing Oct. 11. Thomson also met with executives of Sinar Mas, the Indonesian conglomerate that has invested heavily in B.C.’s wood pulp industry through its Richmond-based subsidiary Paper Excellence. The B.C. delegation toured the world’s largest paper mill, which uses all of the production from Mackenzie Pulp in northern B.C. and most of Howe Sound Pulp and Paper. Paper Excellence also owns the pulp mill in Skookumchuck in the Kootenays, and this spring it purchased the former Tembec pulp mill in Chetwynd that has been shut down since 2012. The annual lumber trade mission is required by B.C. legislation. Thomson said the next stop in Beijing is for his first meetings with national-level Chinese officials, before the group heads to Tokyo and Seoul, South Korea. Lumber purchases to China have risen steadily in the past decade, with sales surpassing the U.S. for the first time in 2011.

Dear Editor,

We want to thank your reader, David Ridley for his assistance in bringing the upcoming Island Savings member vote to the attention of your readers and our members. SAYS We asked:

Do you think Lake Cowichan should have a pick up location for plastics recycling similar to Honeymoon Bay’s box at the Post Office?

Rose Nelson “I think that’s a really good idea because a lot of people don’t have a vehicle to get to the depots where they want you to drop them off. In Lake Cowichan we’re not supposed to put them in with our garbage, they say.”

Don Gordon “I think all garbage and recycling should go into one utensil, one vehicle hauls it away, then they have people in an area to sort it out and pay them a decent wage. It is too complicated the way it is, subsequently people just don’t bother.””

Lily McLaren “Yes, there are some types of bags that we do recycle, I would like to see them out of the landfill/garbage.”

The last bench is cemented in to the new “People’s Park” in Honeymoon Bay by Reinhard Harms (left), and Guy Patten (right). With cooperation from the CVRD, volunteers worked through the summer to clean up the park and build structures in the small wooded area in front of the Honeymoon Bay Hall.

Bob Davidson “My understanding is the plastic shopping bags, like from the Village Market are biodegradable and don’t need to be recycled. I presume they are going to be recycled that way. Although I don’t like to see them in the garbage.”

Dianne Coutts “I think that would be a good idea. It’s too much for the landfills. I am sure there is a way to recycle them somewhere so I wouldn’t mind driving them because I am coming here already.”

Almost 40 young people from across Canada and Indonesia between the ages of 17 and 25 gathered at the Cowichan Lake Outdoor Education and Conference Centre (CLEC) on Oct. 9. Participants in the Canada World Youth program were engaged in a pre-program orientation weekend where they met others in their group and discussed the program. “The Vancouver Island Canada World Youth program

unites youth from across Canada and Indonesia,” said Simon Schachner, a project supervisor with CWY. “The youth (one Canadian and one Indonesian) are going to integrate into their host communities of Duncan and Nanaimo through living with host families. They’re getting involved in the community, mostly through volunteer work placements in the non-profit sector.” CWY is a six-month program in total, three months in Canada and three months in Indonesia. The program is open to any youth in the age

range. The youth at CLEC were energetic and excited about the days and months ahead. Audrey Paquet from Quebec, a passionate young woman, shared that she looks forward to volunteering with underprivileged people in the coming months. “The thing I’d like to learn is caring about others,” said Paquet. “We’re going to see difficult situations for others. We need to know how to care for them and how to help them.” Zakia Syifa from Indonesia feels she can learn a lot by

being in new places. “I want to learn from the practical experience of being in the communities,” said Syifa. “Of having new families, new friendships in other countries, and living in other cities.” The youth stayed at the centre for the initial orientation weekend until Oct. 12, at which point they travelled to their host families in Duncan and Nanaimo. For more information on the program, visit canadaworldyouth.org. For more information on CLEC, visit cowichanlakecentre.ca.

would like to thank my valuable clients, friends and of course my family for all their support over the last 7 years in Real Estate.

I will be retiring from Real Estate at the end of October. It has been a great run and I am now moving on to another RUN… I have handed off my business to Wendy Mitton who will provide the same great service and attention to detail that I have prided myself in. Again thanks everyone.

Fall gardening in the Cowichan Lake area

Well, this has certainly been a different year for gardening with the heat, drought and stage 3 watering restrictions. It was hard to keep some things alive, but we did it. We hand-watered most of the time and saved some bath and dish water, trucking it downstairs to various dry areas. Mulching was more important than ever this year. My fruit did exceptionally well, especially the peach and pear trees, and the rhubarb had two growth spurts. Don’t forget to water trees during the winter especially during the frosty times as the roots can dry out. This goes for any shrubs under roofs or dry covered areas as well. October is time to plant garlic again, near the full moon if you can. They don’t need a lot of fertilizing, but planting along with compost and bone meal gives them a good start. I sprinkle alfalfa pellets on the top after planting as well. Believe it or not, my bush marrow squash are still flowering and there are at least three small squash filling out right now. Greens, rutabagas (swedes), carrots and beets are still prevalent and I have some mid-season potatoes to dig as well. Root vegetables can stay in the ground over most of the winter if covered with hay. Buckerfields’ fall rye/pea/vetch mix can be

Small Business Week, the Lake Cowichan Gazette will publish its annual Small Business Week section on Wednesday, October 22. planted in cleared-out areas of the garden to fix the nitrogen in the soil and stop erosion from winter rains. When it gets tall just weed-eat it and let it lie then it can be dug in or rototilled in the spring. Hopefully, we will get enough winter rain soon and we need a good snow pack too. Delphiniums and poppies have bloomed again after cutting back but the Ester Reed Daisies and Jacob’s Ladders did not. Dahlias are still blooming well and if you dead-head often you should have flowers well into November. They are under my overhang in the front of the house so I might just leave them in over the winter and see how they do. Blue Mason Bees will have to be cleaned and put away for the winter in November. It is a bit of a job, but well worth it for the bees. Ours didn’t fill many holes this year and we aren’t sure why. The Lake Bloomers’ Garden Club’s Oct. 21 meeting will follow up on unfinished and new business and suggestions for upcoming meetings. Our President, Cara Smith, will be attending various other garden club meetings in the valley to network with fellow gardeners and get some new ideas for 2015. Maureen and Carol will report on their trip to the B.C. Council of Garden Clubs’ seminar in Burnaby on Oct. 18. The guest speaker will be the well-known Des Kennedy from Denman Island discussing the topic of wall gardens. He is a real character who had a gardening show on CBC years ago. Some members took cuttings of geraniums and potted them up under the tutelage of Susanne at our September meeting and will report on their progress. Our Annual General meeting and elections are held in November and we hope to have a show and tell session, recipe and household tip sharing and do some planning for next year. Guests are welcome at all meetings which are held at ‘The 50 Plus Activity Centre’ (Seniors Centre) on the third Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. Many of us come early and enjoy a fresh homemade lunch prior to the meeting. Ryan, Dorothy Jean (nee Park) Apr 22, 1929 - Oct 02, 2014

t is with much sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved Mom, mom-in law, Gramma, Zamba and friend.

Dorothy was born in Kimberely, BC, came here as a young woman and ended up working at Berry’s store in Mesachie Lake where she met the love of her life Reg Ryan. They married Christmas day 1949, lived on the river in Lake Cowichan. First came Sheri, then Gus, and in 1953 Reg moved his family to Mesachie Lake where he built the family home - a home that was always open to family and friends. Dorothy was active with many clubs and groups. She was most proud of Dorothy’s Style Shop, one of the main ladies wear stores in the Cowichan Valley. She loved her years there where she made many life long friends. She also enjoyed her time being very involved with Lady of the Lake pageant. Where ever she went someone would stop her to chat about having bought something at her store. As Gram slowed down she moved back to Lake Cowichan for the past 12 years where she was until 2 days before she passed. Gram loved to cook and her fridge was always full of goodies. When the kids played sports she was the biggest fan. She was the best Gramma & Zamba and kid could want. They all knew they could drop in with their fiends at any time and the candy bowl was always full. Family is what meant the most to her. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Reg; a daughter, Sheri Callsen; and granddaughter Tori Callsen. She is survived by Gus & Margaret, Dani & Kilion, Reg & Michelle, Rick & Tricia, Sidney & Nolan & Ashley; Doug & Faye Callsen, Staci & Doug. Wyatt, Braydon, Nelson; Ryan and Amie, Jayden, and our family miracle Kinley Callsen; Darci & Doug, Olivia & Abigail; and Tori’s son Myles; and all of Faye’s kids and grandkids. No service by request. Donation in her memory may be made to “Janeece Place.

Thanksgiving weekend is over and you’re going into pie withdrawals, but not to worry. This weekend there will be enough music to satisfy your cravings. Roots at Legion On Friday night, award-winning country and roots musician Sean Hogan will appear at the Lake Cowichan Legion. In 2011, Hogan, who had been fighting a sore throat for months, was diagnosed with oral pharyngeal cancer, but after months of treatment was given a clean bill of health in 2012. This year, Hogan has been touring for the summer and returns to his home on the Island for the winter. Tickets for his Friday

night show at the Legion are $15 and the show starts at 8 p.m. Folk Guild Fundraiser On Saturday, The Cowichan Folk Guild has a delicious treat that will satisfy your cravings for pie and folk, all in a homey community feel. The CFG’s Family Community Dance and Fundraiser kicks off at The Hub in the Cowichan Station in Duncan. The fundraiser will feature The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra, a folk music group that originally hales from Victoria. “We’re eclectic, but we have a pan-world sense of folk music, says Kurt Lowen, guitarist and vocalist. “We started out eight years ago playing what we called gypsy-ska or gypsy

folk music. Now we’ve merged into world folk, african inspired beats and more. Saturday’s fundraiser will also feature an apple pie contest so bake a pie, bring it to the dance and maybe you’ll win a prize. And will the band be bringing some pie? “If only we had a kitchen on wheels, says Lowen. “But I can promise to eat the pie, which is a pretty important job in itself. On Saturday, the doors at The Hub open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25, ($20 for youth and folk guild members). Children 12 and under are free. For more information you can call 250-748-3975 or 778-455-4710, or visit cowichanstation. org.
