Trustees vote pay increase Small raise applies only to incoming board By Ne i l Cor be tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Cranberry Day
Incoming trustees in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will receive an inflationary raise. With the Nov. 15 municipal elections coming, trustees have set remuneration for the new school board at a base rate of $18,832, effective Dec. 1, 2014. That is a $279 per year raise from the current rate of $18,553, or 1.5 per cent. Trustees also receive a car allowance of $750 for in-district travel. The board chairperson, presently Mike Murray, gets an additional $3,000, and the vice-chair $1,500 more than trustees. Salaries will be $18,832 for trustees, $20,332 for the vice-chair and $21,832 for the chairperson. See Trustees, 12

Slate running for school board seats Supported by teachers’ union and CUPE By Neil Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
A team of four politicians – one incumbent and three newcomers – will have the backing of the two biggest employee groups in the school district as they run for trustee. Slates have not been common in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows politics. However, trustee Ken
Clarkson said it appears to be the best way to uproot an incumbent in local elections, where simple name recognition holds powerful sway over voters. Clarkson announced Friday that he will be on a “team,” joined by three candidates who would be newcomers to the board – Korleen Carreras in Pitt Meadows, and Lisa Beare and Cherie Delainey in Maple Ridge. “In order to accomplish what we want to accomplish, we need a majority on the board,” said Clarkson, a former board chair-

man. He explained that they want a board that conducts more of its business in the public eye, and one that is willing to stand up to a provincial government that is underfunding education. “Too much of the conversation takes place behind closed doors,” he said of the current board. Clarkson clarified that the board is not breaking any rules, but he sees public debate as an important part of the process. He said the existing board discusses controversial issues in private $

meetings, then “rubber stamps” its decisions at public meetings. The slate is supported by CUPE and the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association. MRTA president George Serra said the unions have been working with the candidates in the run up to the Nov. 15. election. “The only incumbent we would support is Ken Clarkson,” said Serra. “One of the things that has become clear to us and CUPE is we need candidates who are politically astute.”

Debates set for municipal election By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
V
oters who want to see their politicians in person before they vote in a new council for four years will have a few chances in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. On Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce will host a midday meeting for Maple Ridge mayoralty candidates only. However, that’s a luncheon event and will cost $25. Location is at the Arts Centre Theatre in downtown Maple Ridge, 11:30 a.m. The meeting will have a moderator and each candidate will have two minutes for opening statements, followed by a questionand-answer session. The audience can also ask questions. Payment is preferably in advance, or at the door. Two days later, on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m., candidates for Pitt Meadows council and mayor will have their turn. The location for that debate will be at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall, 12460 Harris Rd. That event will be free admission and open to the public. The Salvation Army also wants to hear from politicians. Maple Ridge mayoralty candidates will debate the issues Monday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at The Caring Place on 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway. It’s the second election in which the Salvation Army has hosted the event. There will be some discussions about housing and poverty and questions will be allowed from the floor. Ernie Daykin, Mike Morden, Nicole Read and Graham Mowatt all have confirmed attendance. With 26 candidates running for a Maple Ridge council seat, hearing from each one isn’t easy. But one of those candidates is organizing at least two events where voters can chat with
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Leo Mitrunen, who recently moved to Maple Ridge, chats with council candidate Morgan Jensen during a meet-and-greet event sponsored by the Haney Farmer’s Market on Saturday at the Leisure Centre. More meetings are planned. all of them. Morgan Jensen has booked St. John the Divine Anglican Church, on River Road and Laity Street, for two Sundays, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The first hour of each session will be a meet-and-greet format so voters can chat with candidates. A question and answer session will follow. Jensen said some mayoralty candidates have criticized him for organizing the events while running as a candidate, but others appreciate what he’s doing to raise public interest.
“Nobody else is doing it. I’m doing this for all the candidates, it’s pretty obvious. I’m doing it for the common good.” On voting day, Saturday, Nov. 15, Maple Ridge residents can vote at any one of the seven locations, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Those locations are Hammond, Laity View, Yennadon, Albion and Whonnock elementary schools as well as Garibaldi secondary and Ridge Meadows Seniors Activity Centre. If that’s not convenient, people can vote early. Advance polls take place Saturday, Nov. 1 at Ridge Meadows Seniors Activity Centre on 224th Street or Fraserview Village
Small Hall on 116th Ave. Wednesday, Nov. 5 is another day for early voting. That can be done at Maple Ridge city hall. Saturday, Nov. 8, people can vote early at Planet Ice, Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and Maple Ridge Alliance Church. In Pitt Meadows on voting day, people can cast their ballots at Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre and at Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall on Harris Road. Advance voting takes place Nov. 5 and 7 at Pitt Meadows city hall and on Nov. 8 and 9 at South Bonson Community Centre.
Mayoralty meeting too rich for one of the contestants Gary Cleave thinks chamber meeting should be free By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Gary Cleeve won’t be joining in the mayoralty debate Nov. 4 sponsored by the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce at the Arts Centre Theatre. Instead, he’ll be outside, with his bag lunch, “hoping for a piece of Marie Antoinette cake.” Cleeve objects to the $25 price tag, saying in a release that he was shocked by the cost. He wants the event to be free to the public and says unless the fee is dropped, he’ll be “shivering outside the theatre with the huddled masses.
“This so-called all-mayor’s candidates meeting is really a job interview so the business elite can decide which candidate to back,” he said. Chamber president Terry Becker said the event, done in partnership with the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, is just one of the four regular business meetings the chamber has to hold every year. The mayoralty candidates were invited one of the meetings because there’s an election. Scheduling chamber meetings during lunch hours allows chamber members to attend without having to go home, then go out again in the evening, Becker said. “People like to come. They like to have some lunch … have the all candidates’ meeting and then they go back to work. “They like the luncheon format.”
Becker added that the chamber traditionally hasn’t sponsored an allcandidates meetings, adding that usually community groups organize those. “Because we’re a business organization, we’re going to do what our members ask us to do for Cleave first.” The meeting is a great opportunity for candidates to mingle with business owners. But they don’t have to attend. “If they don’t want to come, they’re going to miss the chance to talk to business owners.” The lunch takes place in the Genstar Theatre and the $25 is just to recover the costs of the
theatre rental and food. Becker pointed out that during last election, the chamber partnered to put on an all-candidates meeting in the evening, while there was a luncheon mayoralty meeting during the 2008 election. Cleave, Ernie Daykin, Mike Morden, Nicole Read and Graham Mowatt are all running for mayor of Maple Ridge. Becker said she hasn’t heard from Cleave. Mowatt plans on attending and says the $25 fee is for the meal costs. The chamber is an important organization so he’ll be there. Mowatt, along with council candidate Grover Telford, made a pitch to council Tuesday to reduce parking costs at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Last year, council said it could do nothing about the hourly charges. “If they don’t, we will,” Mowatt said.

No to sprawl: Brown Silver Valley resident running for Ridge council B y Phil Mel nyc h uk pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
There are good and bad ways to grow, good and bad places to grow, says a Silver Valley resident running for Maple Ridge council, Nov. 15. And it’s time Maple Ridge started following good growth, says Kristina Brown, who works in Vancouver but makes her living in the real estate industry. “I think there will always be development. But it’s up to the city to dictate what that development is going to look like. The easiest option is to take empty land and bulldoze it and just put up new houses. That’s the easy option. I don’t think that’s the best long-term solution,” Brown said Friday. Running this election is her first attempt at elected office. As a resident of Silver Valley, Brown has first-hand knowledge of suburb living. Despite it being almost a decade since the Silver Valley area plan was passed, houses and townhouses and roads, plus trails still predominate in the area at the north end of 232nd Street. “Don’t get me wrong, I love Silver Valley, but I think we’re losing the integrity of the area,” and not following the plan. The Silver Valley area plan is about a decade old and set a population target of 11,000 people. Today, about 6,000 residents live in the area. “It’s a long way from anything. There are no coffee shops, there are no produce markets. There are no services in place.” According to City of Maple Ridge staff, it just takes time for the population to
grow and for the services to follow. Brown said Maple Ridge has to change how it grows so people aren’t stuck in suburbs with no transit and congested traffic. The city needs Brown more business and commercial growth, “but I don’t support sprawl out to the east,” part of Maple Ridge. The official community plan calls for suburban expansion to Thornhill, east of 248th Street, once its population hits 100,000. “If our city continues to simply build houses farther and farther to the east and north, with no consideration paid to services and amenities, we are going to be left with higher taxes, a traffic nightmare, no amenities and more unhappy residents,” she says on her website. Brown says, instead, that western Maple Ridge, already served by schools and services, easily could be densified. Increasing the school population there will allow education funds to be allotted for new schools needed in the new suburbs farther east. Allowing more scattered developments create, “that feeling of disconnect in the community. If you don’t have those central places in your neighbourhood for people to gather and for people to come together, you don’t have a sense of community. “When we’re just sprawling out with none of those things in place, I don’t see that being good in our community in general. Magician runs for council By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Mike Norden wants voters to understand, he doesn’t want to be the council clown. His decision to run for Maple Ridge council is a serious one, despite his part-time job as ‘Norden the Magician.’ He admits, many people may be wondering why he’s running and that he has no direct experience on council, although he’s been involved with many meetings. “I think we all have to start somewhere, he says
on his website, where he appears in his magic show attire of red suit. He says Maple Ridge needs to look at better ways of dealing with its garbage and green waste. He wants more buses in the new suburbs and more bicycle routes and sidewalks. The city can also increase its tourism potential by showcasing that natural beauty, he said. “Maple Ridge is poised to be a leader in usable and well-maintained parks and recreation areas. While he lives in Mis-

Stem the tide A B.C. company is playing a small role in the battle against the newest health scourge that is tearing through Africa and threatens to spread elsewhere. Tekmira Pharmaceuticals has linked up with an international consortium that includes representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Medecins Sans Frontieres to advance its development of a vaccine for Ebola. Other companies are also working on vaccines. Some, including Tekmira’s, have reportedly already been used to treat patients, foreshortening the often long and arduous trials and regulatory approvals process. The need to stem the epidemic is that urgent. If the epidemic isn’t stopped, it could soon become endemic, a disease that will be forever entrenched in a region, ready to spread in a moment’s inattention. WHO estimates there could be 1.4 million cases of Ebola in West Africa by the end of January. Meantime, there has been only a trickle of volunteers among the medical community of the western world. The fear and stigma hearkens back to the early days of AIDS. “We talk about stigma and ignorance in Liberia, but let’s be frank, there’s plenty of stigma and ignorance in our own countries, and irrational fear of being on the ground. We have an obligation to counter that fear,” Sheldon Yett, the UNICEF country representative in Liberia, told the The Globe and Mail. Hopefully, more will have the courage to volunteer. When proper precautions are taken, there is very low risk among those working at Ebola treatment centres. Ebola is not an awful, frequently fatal disease. But we must act quickly and decisively, and not let fear prevent us tackling what could soon become the AIDS of our era. –Black Press

Time for truth in B.C. treaty talks VICTORIA – Three years ago, long-time chief and band administrator Sophie Pierre sought an extension of her term leading the B.C. Treaty Commission and gave a warning. The federal and provincial government should start taking this B.C. Views Tom Fletcher long and costly effort seriously or “shut ’er down.” Last week, Pierre wound up her sixth and final year as chief commissioner on a slightly more hopeful note. This year, the Tla’amin Nation in the Powell River area and the Yale First Nation in the Fraser Canyon had their treaties proclaimed by Ottawa. They join the Maa-nulth First Nations on Vancouver Island and the Tsawwassen First Nation in leaving behind the Indian Act and the courts to get on with self-government. Tsawwassen in particular has moved ahead aggressively. Its shopping centre development near the ferry terminal is one of the largest commercial projects in the province right now. All of these treaties were negotiated despite multiple overlapping territorial claims around them, and similar progress has been made with the Tsimshian First Nations on the North Coast and elsewhere. The need for aboriginal people to work out their overlapping claim issues between themselves was the focus of the commission’s
22nd annual report. In it, former chief commissioners Miles Richardson of the Haida Nation and Steven Point of the Sto:lo Nation added their influential voices, urging aboriginal communities to consider them shared territories, rather than clinging to ancient tribal rivalries. Another hopeful sign is that after seven years of commissions and studies, the federal government has finally given its negotiators a mandate to negotiate fisheries. This is the main reason why the Tla’amin waited five long years for Ottawa’s blessing after their treaty had been hammered out. This year’s landmark decision of the Supreme Court of Canada, recognizing Tsilhqot’in Nation title in the remote Nemiah Valley, has also got the attention of Victoria and Ottawa. Pierre noted the “flurry of activity” by Premier Christy Clark in seeking reconciliation, which will culminate this month with a formal apology for the hanging of Tsilhqot’in chiefs 150 years ago. Pierre said this court ruling “should destroy any lingering thoughts that this issue is not of the utmost importance, and provide the necessary investment, both financial and time commitment, to reach satisfactory conclusions.” That’s the good news for B.C.’s thorniest historical problem, the lack of treaties across most of the province. It’s also becoming clearer that the Tsilhqot’in ruling is unique. It’s unlikely to be repeated by most other First Nations, even if they are willing and able to spend the years and millions to enrich lawyers in pursuit of it. Here’s the bad news. As of this year, the

B.C. Treaty Commission has paid out $627 million to First Nations to support treaty negotiations. Most of that is in the form of loans, which are to be repaid out of the cash settlements that Ottawa contributes to settle modern treaties. Pierre acknowledges that some communities are close to completing treaties, but their debt has climbed to near what Ottawa is offering. This would leave them free but broke.
“Pierre acknowledges that some communities are close to completing treaties, but their debt has climbed to near what Ottawa is offering.” Others are just “spinning their wheels” with no real hope of achieving a treaty, Pierre said. The commission is calling for an “exit strategy” for these communities, starting with loan forgiveness that would allow them to pursue economic activity. There are First Nations, Westbank and Osoyoos prominent among them, which are thriving without treaties. Haida and Klahoose have developed successful forest products businesses as they move toward self-government. Federal and provincial governments must recognize the successes, and the failures. Trustees find money for raise
Conservatives are northern Tea Party? Editor, The News: Re: Ingrid Rice (Oct. 10). The mindless support of the federal government in the Oct. 10 editorial cartoon is nothing short of frightening. The bombastic, American-style bravado of the Stephen Harper’s Conservatives has put a target on our (previously internationally respected) backs. The U.S. has been fighting in the region for years, but the only thing accomplished has been the fanning of the flames of terrorism. Let’s make no mistake – Middle Eastern oil, and evangelical Christianity are the main reasons for this action. That, and war is also an excellent diversion against electoral fraud, corrupt senators, underfunded healthcare, underfunded education, unemployment, skyrocketing food costs, child poverty, environmental degradation, and the steady and calculated erosion of social services. Canada has been rendered unrecognizable under the (dubiously attained) northern Tea Party majority. Is it 2015 yet? R. Benoit Pitt Meadows

Editor, The News: I am disgusted, but not surprised. I attended the school board meeting last Wednesday and witnessed the current trustees vote for a raise in trustee remuneration. They made sure to praise themselves for a job well done, and to comment on how hard their jobs are. They sang of how hard they have worked in the last few months, supporting their employees during a bitter strike. That’s laughable. They were virtually mute throughout the strike, at a time when they should have been raising hell with the government. But they couldn’t do that because it wouldn’t go over well at the Liberal fundraisers and functions they attend. The only time we heard even a peep of support from them was as the upcoming election came into focus. And it was definitely a peep. It should have been a resounding roar of shame against the government. I found it bitterly amusing to see them fluffing up, ready to vote for an increase while reiterating the same justifications teachers recently cited: doing hard work, comparing themselves to other districts, no increase in a few years. They were very positive about themselves and all the programs they approve, (that teachers then put into place and de-

malfunctions currently being faced by our schools, because ‘there’s no money.’ Staff who were hired back have had hours cut, so much so that schools cannot run efficiently, nor cleanly, nor safely. The lack of support in classrooms is even more critical than before. My EA is needed full time in a Kindergarten classroom with challenges that do not allow her to leave for more than a moment to check on me and see if she can help out in the minutes, or seconds, before she must return to the other students. She simply is not able to be in two places at once. We have four EAs in a school that needs seven just to make some sense of order. And this is the environment your children are immersed in daily, and it’s everywhere throughout the district. Let’s vote in a board that cares about the future of public education. A properly funded public education for our children helps us all. They are our future, and it is up to us to fight for them. There is money, there really is. We just need a government who will spend it on public education. As the great Dr. Seuss wrote in The Lorax: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Mary Charron Maple Ridge

velop to excellence). But when it got to ‘You can’t attract good people unless you’re willing to pay them well,’ I wasn’t amused anymore. That shows me what they think of the teachers in their employ, not that it was any secret. If the teachers aren’t entitled to even a cost of living increase, how can these trustees justify this slap in the face? If there’s no money, there’s no money, for anyone. This reminds me of the recent Liberal raises of up to 18 per cent. And let’s not forget the $68,000 search for superintendent candidates, none of whom they were satisfied with, when they have a fabulous acting superintendent right under their noses, but wouldn’t hire. But there’s no money. I know some of you are now on the greedy teacher bandwagon, but I am not just talking about teachers. This is the same board of trustees who just laid off all the district’s secretaries and EAs, as well as other positions from maintenance and custodial – because there’s no money. This is the same board who, with tears in some of their lying eyes, listened to the devastation such a move was going to cause in our schools, but completely ignored the loyal, knowledgeable individuals who tried to warn of the future

‘Can’t ignore larger picture’ Slate from front
Serra said there are trustees on the board who are politically aligned with the Liberal government, and others who say they are not political. “You [trustees] just can’t ignore the larger political picture,” asserts Serra. Asked whether members of the general public should worry about education system employees effectively hiring their employers, Serra responded that most of the general public sided with teachers during its labour battle with the provincial Liberals. He said the public wants trustees who will stand up to Victoria and “not worry about offending a friend politically.” Serra added that the current board has written letters to the educa-
tion ministry that are critical of the lack of funding, but still they pass “slash and burn” budgets. Mike Murray, the school board chairman, said the board is frequently critical of the provincial government’s decisions. Most recently, it wrote to Victoria protesting the $40 per day allowance given to parents for daycare during the school strike, saying the money should stay in the education system, and the decision was reached without consulting boards. “I don’t think we’ve been quiet. We’re publicly standing up,” he said. “What we’ve not been is confrontational.” Murray said he would rather make change through dialogue, not actions such as leaving the B.C. School Trustees Association, as the Vancouver board did.
He sits on a committee of the BCSTA that is working toward a new co-governance relationships for boards, and agrees that the relationship between boards and Victoria is not working. “That is a healthy conversation to have,” said Murray. His approach is to run as an independent, and take no donations. “I represent all the people in this community,” he said. He added that the board only decides issues in private where it is required – “land, labour and law” decisions being the rule of thumb. Sarah Nelson is leaving the board after one term in office, citing a lack of local autonomy. She said the addition of the team will make for an interesting election, but does not like the introduction of slates to
local school board elections. “I would prefer that everyone come in with their own independent voice,” she said. Nelson said she might be more supportive of the slate if it had broad support of all groups in education, including the District Parent Advisory Council and the principal’s association, rather than just the unions. The members of the team will advertise together, and promote the same message, said Clarkson. “Our schools are facing a financial squeeze. This puts our kids’ education at risk. We need school trustees willing to be strong, effective voices in our community,” said Carreras in Friday’s press release. “Teachers, support staff and the families in our communities do not feel this government values public education,” added Delainey.
“Teachers, support staff and the families in our communities do not feel this government values public education.” Cherie Delainey, candidate They will not be identified on the ballot, other than by the candidate’s name. Working as a team can be a powerful tool for politicians. A slate of candidates, including a new mayor, was able to win its way to power in the District of Mission during the last municipal elections. Clarkson agreed that slates have the potential to cause partisan divisions on the board, but said trustees have to conduct themselves professionally. “After you get elected, you deal with your differences as adults,” he said.

INFORMED: Fall Brush Chipping Program In partnership with the City of Maple Ridge, Ridge Meadows Recycling Society administers the Spring & Fall Brush Chipping Program for Maple Ridge residents.
The critical thing to do in an earthquake is to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” Here’s a breakdown of the three steps for the exercise:
No pre-booking is necessary, simply place branches at the roadside adjacent to your property by the set-out deadline for your area. Yesterday, Tuesday, October 14 we started picking up materials left out at homes that are West of 224 Street. For those of you east of 224 Street, you can set your materials out starting Monday, October 27.
1) Drop, Cover, and Hold On: ‘Drop’ to the ground, take ‘Cover’ under a table or desk and ‘Hold On’ to it as if a major earthquake were happening. Remain in this position for at least 60 seconds. Practice now so you will know what to do to protect yourself during an actual earthquake! 2) While still under the table, or wherever you are, look around and imagine what would happen during a major earthquake. What could fall on you or someone else? What could become damaged? What would life be like after?
The program includes pick up and disposal of tree & shrub branches up to a total volume of 3 cubic metres (3 feet x 3 feet x 9 feet). Branches may be up to 150mm (6 inches) in diameter. No construction waste, building materials, stumps, leaves, branches with thorns (eg. rose bushes, blackberries), vines, bamboo, root balls, or household waste will be permitted. Please note: items placed at the curb not covered by the program or excess volume of material will not be picked up. The purpose of this program is to provide an alternative to burning this material. No late set-outs or oversized piles will be accepted!

3) Finally, practice what you will do after the shaking stops. Do you have a communications plan for your family? Do you have a ‘Grab and Go’ bag at the office and a Survival Kit at home? Here are some links to allow you to get more information and make sure you and your family are prepared. The City’s Emergency Services page is located at mapleridge.ca/ep. One of the best sites is shakeoutbc.ca. This year we are adding a step to the ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ message. Take a photo of yourself practicing Drop, Cover, Hold On and send your #ShakeOutSelfie to @YourMapleRidge on Twitter to win prizes. We will do a random draw from the participants later this week. In a real earthquake, skip the selfies ;)

‘Board not just for retirees’
www.mapleridge.ca
Two outgoing trustees, Sarah Nelson and Kathy Marshall, both spoke against the increase, but were outvoted last week by their peers who are running for office again. Nelson said there should be a provincewide process for setting trustee salaries. “It’s ridiculous that we create the remuneration process from board to board,” she said. Secondly, she sees trustees as virtually powerless in the education system, as budgets are tightly controlled by the provincial government, and that there is little local autonomy. Given that, she disagrees with local politicians in-
creasing their pay. In considering the issue, the board compared its remuneration to trustees in Abbotsford, Langley, Delta, Richmond, Burnaby, Coquitlam and North Vancouver school districts. Coquitlam pays trustees $37,000 per year, and board chair $39,000, as the highest of the comparables. Most districts were in the $22,000 range. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows trustees were the lowest-paid at $18,553, and their last increase was January 2012. The trustees decided against a proposed raise to $23,642, which would represent the average re-
muneration of selected school districts. George Serra, president of the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association, said the optics are bad for a board voting itself a raise while making budget cuts every year. However, he asserts that every employee of the board deserves a raise, and it is only underfunding by the provincial government that creates funding shortfalls in the district. “But I have some issues about the process they used,” said Serra, noting that almost all of the districts the board is being compared with are bigger than School District No. 42. In the remuneration

of local government officials, population size is always a key factor. He said the board should have compared itself with school districts in cities like Kamloops and Nanaimo, and created “a better group.” He said by comparing itself with larger districts, the board is “kind of setting it up.” In terms of student population, only Delta is the same size as Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, while Coquitlam is approximately double the size. Board chair Mike Murray agreed that the group of districts was generally too large, and said that could be revised. “But the job is the job, no matter how many students you have,” he added, noting that some boards meet just once per month, while the local board meets twice. “Where we ended up is still at the lowest end of that scale,” said Murray. “I think we’re in an appropriate place.” He agreed with fellow trustees who argued that without small, incremental raises, the trustees would fall too far behind other boards. He said the trustee stipend should be enough to replace lost earning potential. “I want people to feel they can run (for trustee) even if it means they have to give up a day of work once in awhile,” he said. “This should not be the exclusive domain of retirees.” The trustees also approved the annual adjustment of trustee remuneration for the period 2014-2019 effective on July 1 each year, based on the Metro Vancouver Consumer Price Index differential for the prior year. The board reduced professional development funding allocated to all trustees by $7,000 during the last budget review.

Metro pump poses problem By D an Fergu s on Black Press
Problems with a pump station in Maple Ridge could cause trouble for a $33.5 million Langley project to bring Metro Vancouver water to Aldergrove and Gloucester. Township engineering and community development manager Ramin Seifi has sent a letter to the director of engineering and construction water services at Metro Vancouver, Goran Oljaca, expressing concern that delays to the Barnston Maple Ridge Pump Station at 200 Street and Lougheed Highway “will have a direct impact on the Township’s East Langley Water Supply
project and will adversely affect our ability to provide timely supply of water to area residents.” In his Oct. 3 letter, Seifi referred to a July meeting of Metro representatives with “impacted municipalities,” including both Langleys and Maple Ridge, where the municipalities were informed the pump won’t be completed until the fall of 2015. That means the pump will not be running during the summer months of 2015, when demand for water will peak and the new east Langley water service is supposed to be operating. In the letter, Seifi said Metro was blaming “unanticipated geotechni-
cal problems,” as well as problems with contractors and suppliers for the delay. The Seifi letter hints the pump delay could force the township to impose water restrictions in east Langley and asks for written assurance that enough water volume will be allocated to Langley so that east Langley “will not be required to endure more severe restrictions than other areas of the region.” East Langley’s water currently comes from seven groundwater wells and every summer, when water usage peaks, restrictions have to be enforced. The pipeline is de-
signed to end that. It is the biggest project ever undertaken by the Township of Langley’s engineering department, with 14 kilometres of one-metre diameter water main and a booster pump station connecting to the regional Metro Vancouver water system. Seifi said work on the pipeline was recently “paused” due to an unrelated issue. He said the contractor has encountered hard rock, and work was expected to resume once the necessary environmental requirements were met to cut through the rock. He said he expects the pipeline will be completed on time.

Cat Ball supports Katie’s Place contributed
Katie’s Place will host the first “Cat Ball” fundraiser on Nov. 1. The event, starting at 5 p.m., will feature live entertainment, dinner and dancing. It will be held at the South Bonson Community Centre (10932 Barnston View Road, Pitt Meadows). Tickets are $50. All funds raised will go directly to the care of animals at the emergency shelter. Katie’s Place has been in the community for 13 years, and in that time has taken in, and found homes for thousands of animals. It has gone from a crew of two volunteers to a team of more than a hundred. “We believe that all life is worthy, and all animals deserve to be treated with dignity and kindness,” said Magda Travis of Katie’s Place. “Over the years we have become the shelter that takes in last chance animals that others cannot deal with. We have many seniors, many animals with health issues, and behavioural issues. They are all loved and cared for. We are a no-kill facility, and we will spare no expense to save an animal in need.” • For more information and tickets, call 604-4676259 or email katiesplacecatball@gmail.com.

Many cats at the shelter are waiting for a home. Many of my friends also love animals, so the responses I get are supportive. I am not a horrible mom. My kids will learn about compassion, will grow up loving animals, understanding commitment, and they will never think of animals as disposable. I would like to think that this is all true, because the alternative is that my kids will require therapy. After our last loss, a fellow rescuer suggested that I get the boys a couple of kittens and not feel guilty about it. I feel guilty about exposing my kids to so much heart ache, but I also feel guilty about adopting a perfectly healthy, young animal that is undoubtedly going to find a home. I thought about it for some time, and I realized I just couldn’t do it. Not with so many wonderful animals sitting at the shelter waiting for a home, another chance, pleading with you each time you enter the shelter to give them some affection. I have decided I will bring home a younger cat with minor medical issues (noth-

ing life threatening) – a cat, or two, who nobody looks at because of their age, or color, or shy personality. There are several that come to mind right away. Since December 2013, this household lost seven animals, the majority of them were kittens dying from feline leukemia. My five-year-old, of course, argued that they cannot die because they are babies and babies do not die. As much as all this is going to teach my kids to be the compassionate adults, I hope they will be, this time I will bring home cats that my boys will have some extra time with. The best thing about my kids is that they never pick out who to bring home. They #103-9780 188 Street, let mom go and pick them out Surrey, BC V4N 3M2 Telephone 604-881-2400 and bring them home. People are encouraged to dress up, although it is not mandatory. he Bella Vita Restaurant is haunted. Not only that, somebody has been found murdered there with a stake through their heart. Is the a killer ghost? Who did it? That is the mystery surrounding The man in the mask, the upcoming Halloween dinner theatre party at Bella Vita, on Lougheed Highway in downtown Maple Ridge. Trevor Jenkins, of Grim Reaper Mystery Theatre, is excited about his first venture in Maple Ridge, and thinks the local restaurant is “ideal” for this type of entertainment. Jenkins has been writing, directing and producing dinner shows for 20 years and specializes in the English murder mystery, which is good natured and tongue in cheek, as opposed to the American ones that are more forthright and violent. “The English [murder mystery] is far more subtle and dry and more melodramatic, and by nature I’m that way,” Jenkins said. “I have an affinity for it. It’s, by nature, a writer’s field and, by nature, I write in that vein.” As patrons enter the Bella Vita, they will be

Irreverently witty and outright uproarious, Avenue Q is the musical story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate who arrives in New York City looking for love, a job, and his purpose in life. The only neighbourhood he can afford is the multicultural Avenue Q, where Sesame Street-esque puppets rub shoulders with humans. Warning: Full puppet nudity and other vulgarities will induce laughter. Recommended for ages 18+

2014 Ridge Meadows Hospice
Fall Report
The Ridge Meadows Hospice Society is a registered non-profit charitable organization that was established in 1979 and serves both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows communities. We are the principal provider of Hospice Support for both communities, and provide compassionate, emotional care and support to individuals and loved ones in dealing with end-of-life experience, grief, and mourning. Historically, “hospices” were considered resting places for both the body and the spirit. Today, hospice is a concept of care that focuses on comfort, support, and quality of life rather than cure. Hospice includes a holistic approach to giving practical, emotional and spiritual support to people at the end of their lives, also to their families, carers or those effected by a bereavement. Our committed team of three full time and seven part time staff facilitate all Palliative care and Grief support training of volunteers, plan and secure vital fundraising efforts, manage and operate our Thrift Store, and administer to all operations that make up our successful team. Volunteers are the backbone of the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society and we are fortunate enough to have over 170 committed volunteers. Our loyal volunteer Board of Directors oversee governance of the society and actively support the Friends of Hospice volunteers who help to run our special events and raise funds. We have a trained team of dedicated Volunteers who help us deliver our palliative support, and bereavement programs to patients and loved ones when dealing with end of life experience, grief and mourning. In addition, our Thrift Store in the heart of Maple Ridge boasts an enthusiastic team of Volunteers who help us run the store daily. Palliative Support The role of a Hospice Volunteer; to just be present, and listen. ~Written by Lindsey Willis, Coordinator of Palliative Support Services~ Extensive training is offered to volunteers to learn to be there as a supportive, non-judgemental presence for another person. This doesn’t come naturally in our culture, to stop our business and offer our full, true presence to another. I have great respect for
prospective volunteers when they start the training and say, “I think I can do this but I want to find out…” This shows the tremendous self-awareness that is so integral to becoming a hospice volunteer. We do ask a lot of our volunteers, to commit to 30- hour training, and engage in mentorship and on-going education. And we ask this because simply those people in our community who reach to us for support during this time in their lives deserve our best efforts. They deserve our complete attention, and focus as they face what may be one of their greatest life’s challenges. When I answer a phone call at our office from a 75 -year old woman whose brave voice shakes with hidden tears, as she tells me she can’t care for her dear husband at home anymore, she deserves my full support. When we meet young families in McKenney Creek Hospice who are struggling to maintain jobs, kid’s activities, balancing the precious time they have so everyone stays “okay”, they deserve to be listened to as they share their fears, and frustrations, perhaps for the first time. When we sit bed-side with a gentleman who is in his last few days of life and he opens his eyes to glimpse his fading world, he deserves a face looking back at him that only shows the sincere intention and compassion of another person. The world of Palliative Care is a whole new journey for individuals and their loved ones. There are so many unknowns, with health changes, planning for the future, hoping for a “good day”. What people in our community should know, and what they need to know, is that they are not alone. Volunteers offer companionship at all stages of this journey, in a manner that fits what a person’s needs and goals are. A principle of Hospice care is that it is “whole person care”, addressing not only physical, but emotional, social and spiritual needs. Perhaps you would like someone to talk to on the phone after you drive your dad to meet the home care nurses, or maybe you would like to participate in our Relaxation Circle as you process this new life-limiting diagnosis. At endof-life, we all know there is often a lot of fear and sadness, but what we all learn as well, is there is always a sense of comfort and peace when we are surrounded by those who genuinely care and want to offer support. We are available should you have any questions about our programs, or how we can

support people at end-of-life. Bereavement Support Grief is described as being the internal and very natural response to a loss, where mourning is the external response to grief through a person’s actions and behaviours. ~Written by Susanne Lamb, Coordinator of Bereavement Support Services~ The Ridge Meadows Hospice Society offers grief and bereavement support to adults and children living in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who are going through the grief process following the death of a loved one. Often thought of as just supporting cancer sufferers or Hospice residents, the Hospice Society can in fact offer bereavement support services for any type of loss, including unfortunate sudden death from accidents, suicide, homicide and child death. All of our programs are facilitated by volunteers who have been extensively trained, enabling them to offer compassionate understanding and support at a client’s time of need. Our services can be offered on a 1-1 basis, group support, to students at schools, by phone or e-mail or in a walking group, giving the flexibility of much needed support. We have adult and children’s books in our resource library for
those who take comfort in reading related support material. The grief journey is an emotional rollercoaster and can be hard to navigate. It’s a journey of selfdiscovery and self-healing to be able to re-engage in life, and regain some normality. Grief is like a growing tree, branching out in every direction not

Grief Has No Timeline knowing which way it will go. We at the Hospice Society can support you through this unknown and often painful journey. Just knowing that there is a safe and confidential place to go to express your feelings, emotions and thoughts can be beneficial and healing when trying to navigate the grief. Accessing our free programs and services is simple. Just phone us or call in to our resource office on 119th Avenue to make an appointment, you do not need a medical referral, you can easily self-refer. The first step is to make an appointment, the initial meeting is an hour and is a very informal discussion to determine what level of support will best meet your needs. Making that first phone call to set up an appointment can be a difficult task, however making that call is acknowledging that support is needed and is the first step on the road to healing. Typically, we help and support around 1,400 clients, families, carers and anyone impacted by terminal illnesses or sudden bereavement annually, this is just one of the testimonials that we have received: “I learned through attending the Support Group that the roller coaster of emotions I would feel are normal. As part of the group, I came to understand that there are steps to survival when coping with grief. I still reflect on the meeting materials as they allow me to practice good self-care and know that truly, grief has no time line. Without this program and the services that the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society provide, I would not be where I am today. In spite of the deep loss, I have moved forward in my life and know a place of peace where bad memories are being replaced with good memories. The importance of these services cannot be adequately measured in words, but please know that I extend my deepest gratitude toward the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society for all the support given to me during one of the most difficult times in my life. Funding All of our programs and services are offered free of charge, but as a registered non-profit society, we rely heavily on funding through grants, legacies and donations from our supporters. We are also supported by holding our own fundraising events throughout the year and by local supporters wanting to raise funds for us by hosting their own third party event.
We are pleased to support the Hospice Society in the valuable work that they do.
Hospice Society Thrift Store Funding for our programs is also supplemented by donations sold through our Hospice Thrift Store located at 12011 224th St Maple Ridge, behind Haney Sewing & Sound. While providing an alternative retail outlet for all saleable household items and clothing apparel, the Thrift Store also acts as a community hub where the friendly staff and volunteers provide a very warm welcome to customers, work experience students and people on community programs to help improve their social barriers, employment skills or just to gain confidence speaking with other people. With just one full time and four part time staff working over seven days, we are very grateful to have the most wonderful and committed team of Volunteers who come in daily to support us in this great environment. Fall Fashion Show On Sunday October 19th, the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society will be holding the 5th annual Fall Fashion Show Fundraiser at the Maple Ridge Legion. Featuring the latest “fashion finds” of the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society Thrift Store, the event begins at 12pm noon and includes lunch, Tickets are on sale now. Celebrate-a-life Ridge Meadows Hospice Society invites you to our annual Celebrate a Life display at Haney Place Mall from November 13th-15th, also at Valley Fair Mall from November 16th18th. This is a time for anyone to come and place a special ornament on the tree in memory of their loved ones. A Time to Remember Join us on Wednesday, December 3rd for a non-denominational, candle lit evening for the community to gather and remember a loved one that has died. Christmas is often a difficult time of the year and many bereaved individuals find comfort with this night that provides special recognition of their loss.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Thank you for choosing Hi. My name is Tweek and I am bonded with my sister Twilla. At first I will come across as being shy, once I become comfortable with you I will repay you with head butts and sweet gentle cat kisses. We are currently fundraising for my entropian surgery (on my eye) and I would love to recover at home with you as a “foster to adopt”. Twilla and I wait paw in paw at the shelter to be adopted together. We are a bonded pair so that means one of us is half the price!

TWEEK & TWILLA
It is only Game 4 in a sevengame high school football season, but the Pitt Meadows Marauders are looking at Friday’s matchup with the Mission Roadrunners as a first-place showdown. Pitt beat the Robert Bateman Timberwolves of Abbotsford 14-0 on Friday night to take a share of first place in the Double A Eastern Conference. The Marauders have made it three straight wins to start the season. On Friday, quarterback Jake Schuster completed nine of 13 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. Schuster’s favourite target was Haden Harty, who had a huge day, with 120 yards and a touchdown
on five receptions. Running back Ryan Beaubien also had 120 yards and a major on the ground. Beaubien was a standout on both sides of the ball, and put up 10 tackles and an interception on defence. Mack Dhami had eight tackles and a quarterback sack. Pitt next hosts the Mission Roadrunners, who are also 3-0 and whose quarterback is one of the best football players in the province. Jesse Walker is coming off a game in which he had 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Containing him will be the challenge for the Marauders. “The way it’s shaping up, it could be a first-place matchup,” said Pitt coach Matt Todd. “If we beat Mission this week, we’re in good shape.” Kickoff will be Friday at 1:45 p.m. at Pitt Meadows secondary. In other Eastern Conference action, the SRT Titans lost 63-0 to the Abbotsford Panthers.
