Who’s running for office? continued from page A2
Area A, D, and E residents will vote on contributing up to $106,500 per year for a conservation fund. And Area C residents will vote on establishing a West Creston fire protection area. • Three Regional District of Kootenay Boundary directors are back by acclamation: Ali Grieve (Area A – Beaver Valley), Linda Worley (Area B – Columbia River), and Area C (Grace McGregor). There will, however, be a race in Area D (Rural Grand Forks), where incumbent Irene Perepolkin is being challenged by her own alternate, Roly Russell, as well as Grand Forks city councillor Bob Kendel. And there’s a three-way contest in Area E (West Boundary) between incumbent Bill Baird, Bill Bosovich, and present school trustee Vicki Gee. • The Kootenay Lake school district will see races in four areas. There are three candidates in Nelson/Bealby Point for two seats: incumbent Bill Maslechko plus Bob Abrahams and Curtis Bendig. For the East and North Shores of Kootenay Lake, incumbent Lenora Trenaman faces Reanne Gow. For Slocan Valley/Bonnington, Sharon Nazaroff is challenging Sheri Walsh. There are four candidates for two seats representing rural Creston, but incumbent Anette Hambler-Pruden isn’t among them. Meanwhile, incumbent Nelson trustee Bob Wright has been acclaimed in Salmo/Taghum to replace Sheri Huser, who did not seek reelection; Shelly Lang will be back for another term representing Kaslo; and Heather Suttie will replace Creston trustee Mel Joy, who defeated her in the last election but is not running again. • In the Kootenay Columbia school district, four trustees have been acclaimed while there will be elections for the other five seats. Beaver Valley incumbents Darrel Ganzert and Kim Mandoli will both be back, as will Rossland’s Gord Smith, and Warfield-Blueberry trustee Toni Driutti. Trail will see three candidates vying for two

seats: incumbents Lorraine Manning and Mark Wilson, plus Terry Hanik, who was narrowly defeated in 2011. It’s no surprise longtime incumbent Mickey Kinakin is running again, but it is a surprise that he’s running to represent Castlegar, Robson, and Deer Park rather than his usual ward more online of Tarrys, Thrums, andSee Shoreacres. He’s up against Rosann Brunton and Catherine Zaitsoff. Neither incumbent Jennifer Carter nor Jo-Ann Bursey is running again. Seeking to replace Kinakin in his old ward are Teri Ferworn and retired assistant superin-

and Personal Healing group that convenes Thursdays in Trail. She opens each meeting, or healing circle, with smudging — a cleansing ritual that uses smoke from traditional sacred medicines such as cedar, sage and sweetgrass to purify or cleanse negative energy, feelings or thoughts from a place or a person. Following prayer, the gathering opens when a symbolic object, such as a talking stick, is given to a group member who wishes to speak. It is then passed around the circle in sequence to others who wish to speak. “We are here to support each other,” said Gillard. “It is heartfelt stuff that can be something painful with the shedding of tears, or it can be happiness and we laugh. But the circle is not a hierarchy. Nobody is better than anyone and we all listen and respond to each other for support and help.” The support group is one of four programs offered through the Circle of Indigenous Nations Society (C.O.I.N.S.), which is an Aboriginal non-profit registered in 2013. The society is guided by an Elders Advisory Council (board of directors) made up of seven elders living in the region.

The board includes Trail’s Faye Poirier as chair; Joanie Holmes of Grand Forks, vice chair; Castlegar’s Gerry Rempel, secretary; Ganishka SilverfoxDann from Nakusp, directors; Laurin Ha c k m a n - G e o r g e and Bev Gillard of Castlegar; and Nelson’s Duncan Grady. Alongside the Metis Parenting group that runs in Nelson on Wednesdays, C.O.I.N.S. offers an Aboriginal Mental Health and Addictions program called “Healing our Spirits,”
in Trail, Castlegar, Nakusp, Grand Forks and Nelson; an Aboriginal Family Services Development Program; and an Aboriginal Early Years Program. “When I came here I tried to get involved in the First Nation community as much as I could,” said Gillard. “Sitting on the board as an elder is an honour,” she added. “But at my age, I still go through things, so being part of the healing circle to listen and be supported is also for myself.”
Sitting on the board as an elder is an honour, The Metis Parenting program is open to any parent or caregiver of a child of Aboriginal ancestry,
and incorporates traditional ceremony, drumming and medicine wheel teachings. Talking circle discussions include the effects of colonization, reclamation of cultural identity, traditional ways, self care and child development from an Aboriginal perspective. Each gathering draws lessons from the traditional medicine wheel, which symbolizes the interconnection of all life, cycles of nature and how life represents a circular journey.

Places
Glossing over Gloster City Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Seventy-third in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Gloster City, also spelled Glouster and Gloucester, and also known as Glouster Camp and Upper Franklin, was a mining town on Lot 3672, about 37 miles (60 km) north of Grand Forks along the Kettle River. The town, along with Gloucester Creek, took its name from the Gloucester claim, which in turn was presumably after the city and district of southwest England, although there are many other places by that name. According to Charles W. Drysdale’s Geology of Franklin Mining Camp, Thomas Newby located the Gloucester and adjoining claims in the summer of 1898. The earliest known mention of the place is in the Nelson Tribune of August 15, 1901: “All that Franklin requires is railway transportation … The same applies to Gloucester and
McKinley camps in the same locality.” When the Kettle Valley Railway announced it would build a line up the North Fork, Grand Forks mayor Frank H. Hutton and partner George B. Todd hired Greenwood surveyor F.M. Lamb to lay out a townsite for them at the projected terminus, known as Upper Franklin — as distinct from Franklin, another town a little over three miles south, named after Frank McFarlane (1865-1935). The Upper Franklin plat was completed in June 1906 but soon renamed Gloster City, probably at the behest of the Franklin Townsite Co. The two places were rivals, as shown by a letter from the latter’s agent, A. Erskine Smith, published in the Greenwood Ledge of July 5, 1906: “The day when a prosperous town could be built on hot air has gone by and the kind of stuff sent out from Gloster City is a detriment to all legitimate enterprises, such as is the Franklin Townsite Co.”

Another volley was fired a month later when George Todd’s application for a hotel liquor license at Gloster was denied while four others were granted at nearby Franklin, Bannock City, Timville, and a place halfway between Franklin and Gloster called Dinsmore. Todd appealed to the courts. The judge said he “could hardly see on what principle the commissioners acted in refusing Todd and granting all the others.” Todd won his case and his license, but must not have held it more than a few years, for the Grand Forks Sun of May 8, 1914 stated: “Gloucester
City, near the Union mine in the North Fork country, at present is reputed to be the most moral and law abiding city in Canada. It has one temperance hotel, but both the church and the saloon are conspicuous by their absence.” The promised railway, meanwhile, only got as far as Lynch Creek, 25 miles (40 km) south of Franklin. A post office application for Gloster was filed in 1913, but rejected, so citizens hired a private carrier. Mining continued in the vicinity for many years, but neither Franklin nor Gloster City survived.

Cutting the cake in a fittingly trades manner were (L-R) Dan Obradovic (School Chair of Industry & Trades), Kate Pelletier (Nelson Instructional Dean), Bruce Morrison (Chair of the Selkirk College Board), Cathy Mercer (Selkirk Registrar), Angus Graeme (Selkirk College President) and Neil Coburn (Vice President of Education and Students).

More than 400 people came out to the Selkirk College Silver King Campus 50th Birthday Barbecue on Wednesday in Nelson. Former students, staff and community supporters joined current students and staff for hamburgers, smokies, refreshments and cake. Held in the Heavy Mechanical Foundation Program shop, the event celebrated five decades of the campus that has provided thousands of students instruction in trades, career programs and community education. “Without the support of the community, Silver King Campus—and indeed Selkirk College—would not have sustained or developed into the thriving regional resource it is today,” said Nelson Instructional Dean Kate Pelletier, who handled the hosting duties for the afternoon. The Silver King Campus opened in 1964 as the BC Vocational School. At the time of its opening, the school—which cost an estimated $2,416,525 to build and equip—offered Automotive & Heavy Duty Mechanics, Welding and Millwrighting in its shops. Beauty Culture, Secretarial and Practical Nursing were also included on the campus that saw high enrolment in its early years. An added touch was the inclusion of Kootenay School of Art which was looking for a permanent location to house its programs that were offered separately from the vocational school. Selkirk College President Angus Graeme touched on that time in his address to those in attendance on Wednesday, and tied it into what is happening with today’s educational programming.

“I just want to cast your mind back to those early days in 1964,” Graeme said. “Think about what was happening in these communities in that year, the industries that were here and needed people, the opportunities for young people to go to work and get some training. There were dams being built, there were forest products being made, there were businesses being started and there were new opportunities emerging throughout the region. Those opportunities are very similar today for our young people. It’s an amazing time to be a student studying in the trades and in the other programs we offer in 2014.”

Our community is reflected so well in the courses that are offered here and at all the Selkirk campuses. “This campus has played a role much like its namesake the Silver King Mine up on Toad Mountain behind us,” said Macdonald. “That mine produced wealth and attracted the people that built our beautiful city. So you could say that the Silver King Mine generated a city. The same goes for the Silver King Campus which continues to provide a range of programs here that are continuing to change to meet the needs of our community and our economy.” Macdonald also talked about what Selkirk

The BC Vocational School was incorporated into Selkirk College in 1975 and it was at that time the name was changed to Silver King. Speaking on behalf of Nelson city council, Councillor Donna Macdonald made reference to the importance the campus has played in building the community it calls home.
College has meant to her personally, having been a graduate of the Forest Technology Program based in Castlegar and other opportunities at the Nelson-based campuses. “My first encounter with Selkirk College was on this campus,” she said. “It was a long time ago back in the ‘70s when I owned a cranky Volkswagen Bug and I figured I better learn how to make it work. I signed up for—if you can believe it, this is what it was called—Powder Puff Mechanics. I don’t think I passed, but it was a great program.” The speeches were capped off by current Hairdressing Program student Frankie Defeo. Having been raised in Nelson, Defeo said she first visited the program in middle school and came for three visits as part of an activities class. Having an important educational option close to home has enabled Defeo to live in a community she loves. “There are many reasons why people choose Selkirk College, but I can tell you the location doesn’t hurt,” said Defeo. “I have been lucky enough to do a lot of traveling so I know that most schools don’t get to be in a place like the Kootenays. The Kootenays are brilliant, inspiring and beautiful and they attract people who are brilliant, inspiring and beautiful. Our community is reflected so well in the courses that are offered here and at all the Selkirk campuses.” The next big milestone for Selkirk College will arrive in 2016 when the community will celebrate 50 years of Selkirk College opening in Castlegar. a standard CornerStep rear bumper. You’ll also find 13 standard tie-down locations throughout the bed that you can use with available, movable cargo tie-down rings. Furthermore, the 2015 Colorado’s configurations are available in an extended cab model with a 6-foot bed, a crew cab with a 5-foot bed and a crew cab with a 6-foot bed. With the tailgate down, the 6-foot bed allows hauling of 8-foot-long items. Even though both trucks are built on GM’s Global mid-size truck platform, they are targeted at two different buyers. The GMC Canyon has more upscale features and a lavish cabin – something I wouldn’t have said before when it comes to midsize trucks – while the Colorado is more utilitarian in nature. No matter how you slice it, both of these trucks have impressive features. One is its quietness. Whether driving
the four or six-cylinder variants, no rattles, bangs or buzzing were heard. I actually couldn’t believe my ears as to how serene the cabin was. I guess the triple door seals are doing their job and doing it well. The transmission had a smoothness to it and the 8-inch touchscreen featuring Text Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free are a bonus. If you’re just hauling yourself, or a pair of jet skis around back, the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado can do the job. And they do it very well. Pricing for the Chevrolet Colorado starts at an MSRP of $19,900 for the four-cylinder with the extended cab. The GMC Canyon has a starting MSRP of $20,600 (both exclude a destination charge of $1,695). Visit www.gm.ca for more information Alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Making sense of the new Canadian fuel consumption rating system By Bob McHugh
A new fuel consumption rating system kicks in for all 2015 model year new cars and light trucks. The Government of Canada has finally approved the five-cycle test method, already used in the US since 2008. In general, those predicted fuel consumption figures on the EnerGuide label (on every new vehicle) will increase somewhere in the 10 to 20 per cent range, compared to a similar, or even identical, 2014 model year vehicle. As before, vehicle manufacturers are required to submit fuel consumption data to the federal government based on controlled laboratory testing procedures. This is done in order to produce results that are consistent and repeatable and includes the use of standardized fuels, test cycles and calculations. The underlying objective is to give a Canadian consumer making a new vehicle purchase decision an accurate and reliable way to compare fuel consumption. The three additional test cycles, added to the old two-cycle testing method, include cold temperature operation, air conditioner usage, and driving at higher speeds with more rapid acceleration and braking. Cars, roads and motoring habits have changed over the years and the new five-cycle test was designed to better simulate modern driving. That said, and also as before, an owner’s actual on-road fuel consumption is still likely to be different, although closer to the new government test numbers. Real life fuel consumption not only varies depending on how and where you drive, it can also change with traffic, the weather, after dark and a bunch of other less obvious factors.
If you want to check how your current vehicle would fare (and compare) in the five-cycle test, Natural Resources Canada (nrcan. gc.ca) has an online The Government calculation tool that of Canada has finally gives approximate fuel economy num- approved the fivebers for vehicles go- cycle test method, ing all the way back already used in the to 1995. This is the web link: http://oee. US since 2008. nrcan.gc.ca/fcr-rcf/ Bob McHugh public/index-e.cfm The more fuel a vehicle burns is directly related to the amount of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, it pumps out the tailpipe. So, not only does a more fuel efficient vehicle cost less to operate, it also has reduced environmental impact. Fuel economy now transcends the small car market and is an important concern for buyers in just about every vehicle market segment. It’s also why fuel economy has become an increasingly important in the marketing of new vehicles, especially in the high-volume market segments. The car business is a highly competitive one and, as you might expect, auto makers try to build vehicles that do well, and get low numbers, in the government fuel economy test. A few have even overstepped the credibility line (by mistake, of course) and have agreed to compensate vehicle owners, most notably Hyundai and Kia a couple of
‘‘

years ago, Ford and Lincoln more recently. Major technological changes are also happening in the fuel economy race. Smaller and more efficient gasoline engines are available, hybrid vehicle sales are taking off, plug-in hybrid vehicles are becoming more common and the pure electric vehicle is a competitive production reality. So, even the term “fuel consumption” may become obsolete, sometime in the future. Right now, however, if you walk into a new car dealership showroom, you’ll probably find both
2014 and 2015 editions of the same model vehicle for sale, side-by-side. If you don’t notice the asterisked note under the EnerGuide fuel consumption figure on the 2015, it’s easy to assume that it’s a less fuel efficient vehicle and that’s almost certainly not correct. The 2015 EnerGuide fuel consumption figure is simply more realistic and closer to what you’re likely to experience during day-to-day driving in the real world. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Charlotte, NC – The launch for the heavily updated Toyota Camry took place here in the heart of NASCAR country. Along the drive route, there were several NASCAR stops, one at the Hall of Fame, and another at Joe Gibbs Racing and a third at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. This was all to emphasize just how American the Camry has become. The chief engineer of the 2015 Camry is from Michigan, not Japan, as was the case with the rest of the crew that updated over 2000 parts on this latest sedan. The car is Toyota’s cornerstone in the United States, thanks in part to the association the brand and the car has with the immensely popular NASCAR series and the long reputation it has for reliability and value. It is the most popular passenger car in North America and number one in the United States. However, that is not the case in Canada, where it lies third in the Toyota lineup behind the Corolla and RAV4. Looks When a car is typically refreshed, the designers add a new front bumper, grille headlights and rear taillights and call it a day. Not the case here, the 2015 Toyota Camry has all-new sheet metal, providing a sleeker and more eye-catching design. The wheelbase remains the same length but the track, side-to-side has been widened for more stability. The overall length is only slightly longer, in the nose, to help achieve the more polished look. The interesting thing is this new more youthful design actually makes the car look smaller, mostly due to the less slab-sided look used in the previous car and the tightly wrapped lines and shapes. This is now a very nice looking car but from about fifty paces the new Camry looks very similar to the new Corolla, which was refreshed last year and is selling very well. There is a new trim level in the Camry lineup, the XSE, sportier looking trim that enabled Toyota to lower the price of the, still sporty, SE trim by $2,000 to $24,990. In addition the SE trim has been added to the Hybrid model, enabling buyers of that efficient car to also enjoy a more distinctive design. Inside Inside, the refresh focuses more on ease of use and refined materials. The top of the dash is the only carryover part, which is still a soft touch material with French stitching. What has been added is faux suede on the doors with the ability to get two-tone seats in the Camry, also with faux suede, but the updated seats are only in the new XSE trim. The centre stack now has bigger buttons and rotary dials for ease of use, a welcome update for older buyers. To appeal to younger intenders, the Camry has the latest connectivity and on the top XLE models a wireless charging system in the centre cubby but the phone either needs a special sleeve or integrated wireless charging technology. Plus, there is a new screen between the speedo and tachometer for a quick reference of the radio, navigation or phone calls. These are all welcome updates but the major competitor for this car is the Honda Accord and the interior on that car is much more upscale and technologically advanced, with two screens and a higher end feel.

Camry update Pick of the Week: continued from page B10
Drive Not just happy to make a more appealing looking car, the engineers also went about improving the ride, handling and noise inside the car. The track of the wheels has been widened and the lower end models also get wider wheels for improved feedback but the biggest change is to the steering feel. The Camry is equipped with electric power steering and these systems have been notorious for poor feedback to the driver. This new 2015 Camry is a big step foreword. Straight-line stability has been improved and the car, with a more rigid platform and slightly stiffer springs
and shocks, is now sending good feedback to the driver. To highlight this, a stock offthe-showroom 2015 Camry, with regular tires was used at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for hot laps. With a pro NASCAR driver at the wheel, this new sedan easily navigated around the oval at speeds over 200 km/h. No fuss, no problem. Not something anyone in a road-going Camry will experience but a good demonstration. Verdict What haven’t been updated are the engine and transmission choices. The same 178hp 2.5L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic does duty along with an optional
3.5L V6 putting out 268hp. Yes, this is known equipment and these engines have a proven record but with Honda and other providing direct injection engines and new slick transmissions, it might be safe to go with “tried and true” but at some point these engines will require upgrades or replacements. As it stands, this is much more than a regular mid-cycle facelift. The 2015 Camry looks much better, drives with more confidence and has a pleasant interior. With the help of NASCAR, the Camry will remain a North American staple, this time with a lot more style. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.
The Citroën C1 URBAN RIDE concept will never reach our shores even if it goes into production. But it’s always interesting to view European interpretations of city cars. The fold back top, which enables an almost convertible driving experience, is a throwback to the classic Citroen 2CVs from yesteryear. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Ridding the driveway of that dump of snow By Ian Harwood
We have had a beautiful summer but you just know we are going to pay for that as fall rolls into winter. You no doubt have a trusty snow shovel but surely, it would be better to get in your truck and plow it out of the way. With a good blade, you could get that driveway cleared during the commercial break and return to watching the game. If you plan to buy a snowblade for just plowing your own driveway, a straight-blade will more than likely be just fine. Snowsport offers a personal plow that is perfect for the homeowner. This system attaches to a front mounted receiver just like
a boat trailer would. The U shaped bracket is connected to the receiver and the snow blade rides up and down on these bars to allow for change in terrain your plowing. Because there no hydraulics are involved, all you do is back up and the snow blade lies back skimming over the surface. When driving forward the blade automatically re-engages for plowing. When you are finished, you lift the blade back over the push frame into the transport position. The cost of this option is $1,644. K2 is another brand of snowplow designed for the homeowner with acreage. Designed to work with a front receiver hitch, just like the Snowsport, it simply slides in the receiver and locks in place with a hitch lock. The
winch is controlled from inside the cab and will raise or lower the height of the blade. The blade comes with a hardened steel cutting edge scraper, rubber snow deflector, skid shoes, and plow markers. It is available in 82”, 84”, and 88” lengths. Cost is $1,315. If you use your plow to make money, then you will want to be able to do the job quick and efficiently, so you may want to go with the multi-position. Multi-position plows are up to 50 percent faster because you can reposition the blades to all straight-blade positions in addition to the scoop and V positions. This makes the plow adaptable to nearly any job you need to do.

When it comes to the composition of the blade you have the choice between steel and poly. The vast majority of snowplows on the market today come with steel blades, although the poly plows are becoming more and more popular. The reason for the growing popularity is that poly is just as strong as steel and maybe stronger. They also have a lower coefficient of friction, which saves on fuel costs and
is easier on your vehicle. The poly plows are also saturated with color all the way through so nicks and scratches do not show like they do with steel, plus they do not rust. Attaching and detaching the plow is very important as well. You do not want to be freezing and trying to deal with getting a blade on and off your truck. Try the attachment system for yourself at the dealer so you can see firsthand how easy or difficult it is to use. Most snowplow makers

use a single halogen light bulb, which are not bright enough; some makers have come out with dual halogen bulbs with the option of upgrading to High Intensity Discharge. These HID lights are four times brighter than standard halogen bulbs and also last ten times as long. Hydraulics is probably the most important part of the plow, along with the controls. Be sure that the hydraulics system is dependable and the controls are simple and easy to use.
Go for quality rather than trying to save a buck. Remember “you get what you pay for” definitely applies here. Costs for these units are $6000 to $8000 depending on the model. When it comes to the warranty be sure to know exactly what you are getting and what the warranty covers. Some only cover parts, while others cover parts and labor. Warranties are usually either one year or two years. ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca
Watched a car pull out of a gas station and take off in the curb lane like an F1 racer. A car planning to turn right in the second lane was signalling a move into that curb a second before the speeding car had entered the road. The speeder laid on his horn and gave the turner the finger. Technically, the speeder may have had the right to pass on the right but it was downright bad manners. The Power to Surprise

Forgotten 1970s Classics looking rear-wheel-drive sport coupe that was available with a variety of engines, including three V8s, a 262, 305 and 350. The latter two were only for California and high-altitude markets, but the 305 with 140hp was the one to have, with the other two engines making 110 and 120 hp. While more than 700,000 Monzas were built, very few seem to have survived. Opel GT – The Opel GT sported mini C3 Corvette styling courtesy of Chevy stylist Clare MacKichan. Even the instrument panels look similar. Power came from Opel’s optional 1.9-liter “high-cam” four-cylinder engine, with the smaller

The often-maligned 1970s produced plenty of truly memorable cars, from the Pontiac Trans Am to the Porsche 911 Turbo. These aren’t those cars. These cars are the obscure and forgotten (but still oddly appealing) afterthoughts of the decade. Here are five worth remembering: 1975-80 Chevrolet Monza – The Monza did a good job of hiding its Chevy Vega roots, although GM insiders still persist in calling it the “Italian Vega” because it cribbed so many styling cues from Ferrari. It was actually a very good-
attractive little thing that did without so many of the odd styling gimmicks employed by Japanese cars of the day. The Rotary was powerful and torquey and could surprise its share of V-8 powered Detroit iron at a stop light, but at the end of the day, the rotary was as thirsty as a Detroit V-8, negating any advantage there. Still, the RX-2 is technically interesting and rare today in a climate of growing collector interest in early Japanese cars. 1973-75 Pontiac Grand Am Colonnade coupe – The first car to carry the Grand Am name (which was an amalgam of Grand Prix and Trans Am) was a big, thirsty, traditional American personal
1.1-liter standard but rarely seen in the U.S. Performance with the 1.9-liter was quite decent, with the car solidly outperforming cars like the MGB GT and the carbureted BMW 2002. Buick dealers were happy to have the car in the U.S., as it gave them a sportier product with which to lure young buyers into the showroom. It was the Datsun 240Z, however, that spelled the end of the Opel GT; it simply couldn’t compete in price or performance. Few people today remember the curious little mini-Corvette. 1970-78 Mazda RX-2 – The RX-2 was Mazda’s first attempt at selling a rotary powered car in large volumes. It was an
luxury car with a few Euro touches in the seating department and in the real wood interior accents. It also had a soft Enduro nose that gave it a unique and sporty look compared to its more traditional A-body cousins, the Buick Century and Olds Cutlass Supreme. The ’73 model was the swan song of real horsepower with 400 and 455 engines available that both made well over 200hp. There was even a rather unpopular manual transmission option. The Oil Crisis put sales into a tail spin, but the unique sight of a Grand Am today can give still another reason to miss Pontiac.

Forgotten 1970s Classics continued from page B2
1981-83 AMC Eagle SX/4 – The Eagle SX/4 was based on the AMC Spirit, which was essentially a masterfully restyled Gremlin. And while the Audi Quattro coupé generally gets all the credit for marrying allwheel drive to a two-door car with sporting pretensions (the Jensen FF actu-
ally did it first in 1967), the little Eagle SX/4 appeared at right around the same time the Quattro was introduced in Europe. Interestingly, it was available with a five-speed manual transmission. Cynics might poke fun at the Eagle SX/4’s high ground clearance and dismiss it as a “Joe Dirt” Quattro, but the little Eagle was a particularly impres-
sive car given the fact that AMC’s R&D budget was a fraction of what the Volkswagen/Audi group had to play with. Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca
