Mayor Wayne Wright is in fighting form in front of his campaign office. Wright says he’ll be fighting a labour-endorsed ‘machine’ in the Nov. 15 election.

Taking on ‘The Machine’ Opponents believe labour council endorsement distorts influence in city politics Grant Granger

ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

It’s the elephant in the New Westminster civic election campaign room. The Machine is what its opponents call it. Some decry The Machine in order to paint themselves as the underdog as the campaign kicks off. What they’re referring to is

the unofficial slate of candidates backed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council (NWDLC). And they’re particularly fearful of its influence since Voice New Westminster, which fielded partial slates in the last two civic elections, is nowhere to be found in this go-around. Although the NWDLC hadn’t officially named the candidates it will endorse in the Nov. 15 election, their identities are no secret in New West. The

labour council is backing Coun. Jonathan Coté in his bid to unseat Mayor Wayne Wright, as well as incumbent councillors Bill Harper, Jaimie McEvoy, Chuck Puchmayr and Lorrie Williams, and newcomers Patrick Johnstone and Mary Trentadue. That’s a full council slate this time around. In 2011, the NWDLC gave its blessing only to Coté, Harper, McEvoyBalkan_ and Williams. the 14-06-20 time Lug ad.pdfBy 1 Puchmayr decided to run it was too

late to get the endorsement. The four school trustees it backed in 2011—Jonina Campbell, Michael Ewen, James Janzen and David Phelan—were all elected as well. “I’m fighting seven of them,” insisted Wright, who’s seeking his fifth term as mayor. “I’m just one individual, I’m fighting a machine and I have no machine.” The labour council doesn’t just announce who it supports. Many of its unions provide financial support to thePMcandidates. 12:09

Paying off the mortgage is supposed to be a time for celebration not concern, consternation and confusion. But that’s what could be in store for co-op housing members when their mortgages are done in the next few years. That uncertain future is why the Co-operative Housing Federation of B.C. (CHF) is holding a meeting in New Westminster next Thursday as part of its You Hold The Key campaign. Once their mortgages expire, co-ops throughout B.C.—set up in the late 1970s and into the 1980s—will lose federal funding that subsidized about a third of their members. There are eight housing co-ops in New West. Five of them will have their subsidy cut off by 2021 and all eight by 2024, according to CHF spokeswoman Fiona Jackson. She said about 3,000 homes across the province will lose their subsidy by 2020. Please see CO-OPS, A3

Co-ops to be cut off

continued from FRONT PAGE

CHF wants to get going on alerting its members to the issues and start working on solutions to make sure the problem is solved. “Sometimes there’s misinformation and people in co-ops don’t understand what this means, or think there’s going to be some sort of problem to solve it,” said Jackson. The Westminster Landing Housing Co-op, where the meeting will be held, will lose its subsidy in 2020. “The mortgage would be paid off but the 20 or 30 per cent of the people who are here on subsidy would no longer have that funding and would have to move to other locations, and because there is no federal funding there’s going to be only the

provincial alternative which is social housing,” said resident Ken Wilkinson. If nothing is done then there’s going to be a lot of uncertainty about how the co-ops are going to be managed once the mortgage is up. “It’s a very vague set of ideas the federal government has put forward on how to sustain this,” said Wilkinson. Although it wouldn’t be hard to find members to replace any of those who were subsidized that still wouldn’t solve anything, he said. “You can fill them up very easily, but there’s no plan in place on how to manage that. [The federal government is] basically washing their hands of the

whole concept … That scares us.” Wilkinson said CHF has to find out from the co-ops and their members what the issues are for them and then work toward developing options to present to all levels of governments to find a solution. CHF said the subsidization expiry could mean higher housing charges for co-op members and that seniors, lowincome members, single parents and people with disabilities could lose their homes. The meeting will be held at unit 1 at 13 K de K Court on Thursday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m. For more information go to www.chf.bc.ca.

THE ANNUAL SHOW

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADER

Fall leaves create a colourful canopy, as well as a little extra work, along Third Avenue in New West on Tuesday.

ELECTION 2014 Mayor in fighting form Although Mayor Wayne Wright doesn’t have an account, Twitter was all aflutter this week about his campaign office sign. The office at 612 Carnarvon St. used to be a martial arts centre. Wright’s organizers decided to take advantage of the previous occupant’s sign featuring three fighters in poses and superimposed Wright’s face on them. “It’s for fun, you’ve got to put some levity into this,” said Wright with a laugh. “[The campaign] is a fight.”

‘Understanding who is pulling strings’ The ‘fight’ got more difficult for Wright when the four incumbent councillors who are running again—Bill Harper, Jaimie McEvoy, Chuck Puchmayr and Lorrie Williams—all declared their support for Coun. Jonathan Coté’s bid to be mayor. “That’s hard to understand,” said Wright. “They’ve been working good with me for the past 12 years some of them, how can they turn around and say we haven’t had a good run?” He denied he was hurt by their endorsement’s of Coté, saying they’re just following the New Westminster and District Labour Council wishes. “I don’t think it’s a hurt. It’s an understanding of who is pulling those strings. They can’t say we haven’t worked well together, that I haven’t got the experience, I’m not a good leader, or I haven’t had the fire in my belly. You kind of have to give your head a shake in what’s happening.” Coté, of course, has a different view. “I believe the strong support I am receiving from council indicates that it’s time for new leadership. We have done some great things on council over the past decade, but this election is not about the past 10 years, it is about the future.”

Wright endorses Kainth, Donnelly

All-candidates meeting

Wright said he is supporting Tourism New Westminster executive director Tej Kainth and former councillor Cal Donnelly in their bids for seats on council. He said he’s mentored Kainth for more than a decade and worked with Donnelly for more than 20 years.

The Downtown New Westminster Residents Association has scheduled an all-candidates meeting for Holy Trinity Cathedral on Carnarvon Street for Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Crosty in the race Mayoralty candidate James Crosty said he decided to run again because voters needed another choice. He pointed out he is a year younger than Wright was when he first got elected. “I have the most experience from the private sector in order for it to achieve what I believe is the best is yet to come,” said Crosty. He maintained spending in New Westminster has risen too much, affordable housing is suffering and social services are hurting because there are too many. In his opinion, Coté, as a three-term member of council, is as much to blame as Wright. “Jonathan can talk about the future, but he can’t hide from the past,” said Crosty.

Wright has a machine of own: Coté ⫸

continued from FRONT PAGE

They also use lists from federal, provincial and civic elections cultivated over the years to work the phones and the flyers to make sure its members actually get out and vote for the anointed ones. “It’s always an overwhelming influence in civic politics in New Westminster and it has been for years. The money and the influence has been distorting,” said Patrick O’Connor. O’Connor was Voice’s main organizer. But he’s been hired to help out the Non-Partisan Association (NPA) campaign in Vancouver so there won’t be a Voice slate in 2014. He said in 2011 the labour council tacitly backed Wright. “It’s going to be interesting. Knowing what I know about the influence of district labour, if they pulled the plug on Wayne all the vote will go to Jonathan,” said O’Connor. “We know from people who worked on those campaigns they had a phone bank behind the other phone bank for Wayne.” But Coté begs to disagree with Wright’s statement the mayor doesn’t have an electoral “machine.” After all, Wright has won

four elections and collected a lot of support along the way. “I see ourselves up against a machine,” said Coté. “We’re not going to be able to compete with Wayne’s campaign in terms of financial resources.” In 2011, Wright claimed more than $50,000 in campaign contributions, most of it from the development community— the largest contribution being $10,000 from Aragon Developments. However, Coté said joining forces with the other candidates allows them to collaborate and pool their resources. James Crosty, who finished second to Wright in 2011, is back to try again. He, too, admits it’s tough to take on the labour council and he doesn’t like the influence it yields, especially after the election is over. He maintains the successful candidates backed by the NWDLC have to consider the support they got from labour when making their decisions. “There’s nothing against these people, let me make that clear, but when you’re elected you represent everybody,” said Crosty. “[Labour council support] is an unfair advantage.” Simon Fraser University

Jonathan Coté back in June, after announcing his bid for the mayor’s job. Coté says his labour endorsement doesn’t necessarily give him more resources for his campaign than Wayne Wright, who typically gets significant contributions from developers.

political scientist Patrick Smith said slates like the labour council’s can be effective in local elections. “If you can do a better job than somebody else is doing there’s a big reward,” said Smith. “The politics of today is a lot about lists, who has what lists and who has what information in terms of access to voters. But if you have 27 per cent turnout [in an election] and you can push it to 28.5 per cent, and if all of that 1.5 per cent is yours you can get a big reward.” Smith cited former Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell and left-leaning COPE winning a majority in 2002 after getting the Downtown Eastside community more engaged than usual. That, he

said, counterbalanced Vancouver’s west side neighbourhoods, which traditionally produce the highest voter turnout. They responded in turn in the next election by getting Sam Sullivan elected instead. In the board of education race, trustee Casey Cook said he is worried about the “labour slate” having control. That’s a big reason why he decided to run even though he felt the board’s politics had become disheartening and destructive. Cook, MaryAnn Mortensen and Lisa Graham all ran successfully under the Voice banner in 2011. Two others were unsuccessful.

With Graham bowing out, Cook and Mortensen have joined forces with James Pepa to form an informal independent group, Cook said. They’ll be up against returning labour candidates Campbell, Ewen and Janzen as well as newcomers Mark Gifford and Kelly Slade-Kerr. NLWDC secretarytreasurer Carolyn Rice was unavailable to comment prior to the NewsLeader’s deadline. SETTING IT STRAIGHT

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Harry Schneider was at Brentwood Town Centre last month and was going up the escalator when he saw these two men cleaning the canvas roof. Lost in transit The province has asked residents to take part in discussions about improvements to the transportation system over the next 10 years. While public consultation is always a good idea, the province’s On The Move document, which guides public discussion, is missing some key elements. While it makes reference to BC Ferries and to the Metro Vancouver transit system, neither is part of the discussion the ministry wants to have. Bridge tolls are completely ignored. The guide asks participants a series of general questions which do not even mention ferries or tolls, and make just passing reference to transit. This comes just a few weeks after the province’s approach to BC Ferries was roundly condemned by the Union of B.C. Municipalities, its report stating cuts to ferry service and increased fares have reduced B.C. economic activity by $2 billion. As for transit within Metro Vancouver, mayors are putting together priorities for a referendum, slated for next spring. While a great number of projects have been proposed, the means to pay for all these ambitious projects remains elusive. It is obvious the province does not plan to give up any revenue, and property taxes to fund TransLink are already high. Boosting the gas tax will just send more people south of the border. Adding new taxes for more transit projects will be a tough sell, particularly given the state of the economy. The province seems determined to whistle its way by these major concerns about transportation. While there are many other priorities and public input is very helpful, ignoring several of the biggest transportation issues does not seem reasonable. —Langley Times/Black Press

Scant interest in (human) Ebola victims Word that more than 360,000 people across the world signed an online petition to save the life of a dog, owned by a Spanish nurse who was recently diagnosed with Ebola, puts the priorities of many people into perspective. The dog, Excalibur, was killed by authorities who feared he might spread the virus, although he was never tested. That part of the story doesn’t make sense. But the fact that so many people got worked up over one dog, while showing indifference to thousands of people who have lost their lives to Ebola, is deeply disturbing. The outbreak shows no sign of slowing. It appears that many people in Europe and North America do not care a whit about the poor people of West Africa who are dying of this terrible disease. Some protesters even gathered outside the Madrid apartment of the nurse, calling police who came to get the dog “assassins.” Are they suggesting that one dog’s life, whether the dog should have been killed or not, is more valuable than the almost 4,000 lives lost to this disease this year? Do they care at all about the children who have lost their parents, and the health care

Frank Bucholtz system in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, which has lost many of its workers? Bear in mind that the doctor to patient ratio in these countries, before Ebola struck, was one of the worst in the world. In Sierra Leone, it was three doctors per 100,000 people. I’m more interested in this story than some Westerners, because we visited Sierra Leone last December. It is one of the poorest countries in the world, but people at the time we visited were optimistic as the economy was improving and the country was finally getting beyond a horrible civil war, which killed and maimed thousands, destroyed infrastructure and caused investors to flee. Jobs remain scarce, and there is rampant poverty, but the people we met were almost all optimists, and treated us very well. My daughter has been travelling to Sierra Leone since

2008, and has set up a foundation there to assist young people in gaining university educations, as well as encouraging them to mentor others and run health education programs. Her foundation, The People’s Foundation of Sierra Leone, has received donations from interested North Americans. While the Ebola situation in Sierra Leone isn’t quite as bad as it is in neighbouring Liberia, the hardest-hit country, it is nonetheless terrible. Schools are closed. Food is scarce and more expensive than usual. It is almost impossible to get any health treatment, as the few resources available are being used in the fight against Ebola. Many foreigners and wealthy Sierra Leoneans have fled the country, and the consequence is that mostly poor people are left behind. Given the almost complete lack of sanitation and other basic services in the capital, Freetown, it is virtually impossible to stop the spread of the disease. Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF), which many know as Doctors Without Borders, virtually stood alone in trying to combat this disease until recently.

The national government has helped somewhat, mainly by quarantining certain areas of the country and doing house-tohouse checks to see if there were unreported Ebola victims, but the government is weak and poorlyfunded. Corruption is also an ongoing problem. I heard last week that a container of medical supplies was held up at the docks in Freetown for a month — almost certainly because a bribe was not forthcoming. Maybe it is the complexities of getting meaningful help to people in West Africa that causes so many to ignore their plight. I love dogs as much as anyone and am saddened that Excalibur lost his life. But I’m even more saddened that so many wealthy people (and that includes almost everyone in the First World) are so indifferent to the fate of our fellow human beings. Those who really want to make a difference in fighting Ebola should consider making a donation to MSF. Its online address is http://www.msf.ca. Frank Bucholtz is editor of the Langley Times.

Time for Mayor Wright to pass the torch pressure on city grass fields that cannot handle the wear and tear that comes with our wet climate. A look to our neighbour’s Burnaby Lake West complex shows that a state-of-the-art multi-field facility could be created in this location that would serve a variety of sports. And this could form the basis for the hosting of youth sports tournaments that are often a great source of income for the organizing clubs, giving them in turn the financial resources to improve the programs they offer for our kids. Now this is something that would really benefit the community. Jos Beckers New Westminster

Re: Oil protest a slippery slope for cities (BC Views, NewsLeader, Oct. 8) Tom Fletcher’s column is the “Emperor has no clothes” moment for the upcoming civic elections. Voters should be wary of grandstanding politicians opining on issues outside municipal jurisdiction who are either pandering for votes or ignorant of the areas over which they have real authority. As a first proposition, cities, creatures of provincial jurisdiction, have no authority over inter-provincial pipelines involved in interprovincial transportation. No amount of “lawyering up” will do any good on this issue as the eminent domain of railways and pipelines involved in interprovincial commerce lies with the federal authority. Just like municipalities are creatures of provincial governments, The National Energy Board is a creature of the federal government and therefore has the appropriate jurisdiction. We should not let municipal candidates stray from discussing issues they have legitimate authority, no matter how compelling they parade their social engineering goals. E.C. ‘Ted’ Eddy Coquitlam

The number of container truckers licensed to serve Port Metro Vancouver will be slashed and those who survive are being promised higher enforced pay as part of reforms to cement labour stability and avoid any new strike disrupting trade. B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Wednesday the province will legislate rates for container truckers, retroactively, and indicated the current number of 2,000 licensed trucks could drop to about 1,500. Too many trucks now chase too few loads, according to Port Metro Vancouver planning vicepresident Peter Xotta, causing “intense competition” between firms, insufficient work for truckers and undercutting on agreed rates. Reducing the number of licensed operators is expected to create a better balance. A 28-day strike by container

truckers last spring ended on government promises of a range of improvements, including minimum rates and compensation for long waits at terminals. But unionized truckers had warned over the summer another strike was possible without enforcement of the rate floor to prevent undercutting by some trucking companies. Truckers now licensed to haul containers in and out of container terminals will be invited by Port Metro Vancouver to apply for new licenses with mandatory performance bonds, damage deposits, driver sponsorship agreements and licence charges. Port officials aren’t yet saying how they’ll decide who is in and who is out of the new licence system. B.C. Trucking Association president and CEO Louise Yako said the new requirements aim to encourage responsible conduct and deter marginal operators who make the business more volatile. “They want to set the financial barriers high enough

that it reduces the likelihood that trucking companies are going to have a race to the bottom by reducing their rates and thereby reducing compensation to drivers,” Yako said. Most BCTA members would much prefer unrestricted competition, she said. But Yako said repeated strikes have spurred the senior governments to deviate from national policy and regulate for economic stability, not just safety and the environment. The provincial and federal governments have also invested billions in port and transportation infrastructure in Metro Vancouver to assure reliable goods movement through the port, which handles 130 million tonnes of cargo a year. How well the reforms work will ride heavily on the implementation of recommendations tabled by consultants Vince Ready and Corinn Bell, she said. Not all trucking firms are expected to join the new system, which is to be up and running by Feb. 1.

15 billion recycled McDonald’s restaurants used to boast about how many billions of customers they’d served. Now they’ve got company. On Wednesday Encorp Pacific recycled its 15th billion beverage container in the 20 years its been the steward for British Columbia’s recycling program. “The success of our system for recoiling beverage containers proves that millions of small acts can add up to a big win for the environment,” said Scott Fraser, the president and CEO of Encorp Pacific.

He was joined by BC environment minister Mary Polak to watch the symbolic milestone container pass through Encorp’s Return-It depot at Queensborough Landing. “This is a British Columbia success story about what can happen when we all work together for the greater good of the environment,” said Polak. B.C. has one of the best records for recycling beverage containers in North America. Last year almost one billion used aluminum, plastic and glass beverage containers,

including 69 million drink boxes and cartons were returned for recycling. That’s 80.1 per cent of all beverage containers sold in the province. All those containers translated into more than 90,000 metric tons of recyclable material, saved enough energy to power 42,000 homes for a year and reduced the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere by the equivalent of 94,700 tonnes. “British Columbians deserve a pat on the back for making a difference,” said Fraser. newsroom@newwestnewsleader.com

handling and noise inside the car. The track of the wheels has been widened and the lower end models also get wider wheels for improved feedback but the biggest change is to the steering feel. The Camry is equipped with electric power steering and these systems have been notorious for poor feedback to the driver. This new 2015 Camry is a big step foreword. Straightline stability has been improved and the car, with a more rigid platform and slightly stiffer springs and shocks, is now sending good feedback to the driver. To highlight this, a stock off-the-showroom 2015 Camry, with regular tires was used at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for hot laps. With a pro NASCAR driver at the wheel, this new sedan easily navigated around the oval at speeds over 200 km/h. No fuss, no problem. Not something anyone in a road-going Camry will experience but a good demonstration.

Verdict What haven’t been updated are the engine and transmission choices. The same 178hp 2.5L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic does duty along with an optional 3.5L V6 putting out 268hp. Yes, this is known equipment and these engines have a proven record but with Honda and other providing direct injection engines and new slick transmissions, it might be safe to go with “tried and true” but at some point these engines will require upgrades or replacements. As it stands, this is much more than a regular mid-cycle facelift. The 2015 Camry looks much better, drives with more confidence and has a pleasant interior. With the help of NASCAR, the Camry will remain a North American staple, this time with a lot more style. Sticker price: $23.850-$34,550

WORKSHOP: 1 TO 2 P.M.

Panel on creating Dementia Friendly Communities The panel includes Rebecca Morris, advocacy analyst with the Alzheimer Society of B.C.; John Stark, senior social planner for the City of New Westminster; and Jim Mann, board member of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Mann is the recent recipient of the 2013 NHCC Changemaker Award from the Ontario Brain Institute. The award recognizes people who demonstrate leadership in inclusion, innovation and integration for the benefit of people living with brain conditions. Since being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2007, Mann has been a tireless advocate for Canadians living with brain conditions. In his role with Alzheimer Society of Canada and the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia, Mann has been the public face of “Jim’s Push for a Plan,” an advocacy campaign for a provincial dementia strategy. Mann also co-chaired the Public Policy Committee for the Alzheimer Society of Canada, and is a member of the Canadian Dementia Knowledge Translation Network Advisory Board. Please see DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY, A22

JIM MANN’S STORY It was only a few months after getting the Alzheimer’s diagnosis that I received a broadly distributed e-mail from a business acquaintance that began with, “Even with my failing memory I don’t recall.” I knew this acquaintance didn’t have cognitive impairment. I also knew that I couldn’t ignore it. I had to respond. At that moment, for the first time, I publicly Jim Mann was diagnosed with replied with “I have Alzheimer Disease in 2007. Alzheimer’s.” That is how my journey of advocacy began. There have been several “teachable moments” so far on the journey. That’s what I call opportunities to break the cycle of ignorance and to change attitudes through education. I do it one person at a time; one opportunity at a time. No matter where in the world, I think there is a stigma around dementia. You say you have Alzheimer’s in a group of people and the room can become quiet. Please see DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY, A22

In the community, he has inspired many, while serving as a support group leader for people living with dementia, public speaker and educator. “Since learning about my Alzheimer’s six years ago, I use every opportunity to tell people there is life beyond diagnosis,” he said when receiving his award. “I hope this award helps people to better understand and be less fearful of this disease. We need more public conversations and encourage anyone affected by Alzheimer’s disease to speak out for themselves and others.”

JIM MANN’S STORY (CONT’D) People can become uncomfortable and it seems to me for no other reason than the dreaded stereotype associated with Alzheimer’s or related dementias of someone in the final stages, approaching 100 years of age, and who doesn’t speak. In those “teachable moments” I can shatter the stereotype and educate one more person. After all, I was diagnosed when I was only 58 years old, not considered a “senior” by legal or societal standards, yet by appearance I look like a healthy, capable middle-aged man. My passion is advocacy, whether it is one person or in a group, whether quietly in the background or through loud demonstration, I believe in the value of advocacy because it is an opportunity to make voices heard. And who better to tell the story than people with dementia and their caregivers?

Hyacks rout Royals with ...to win great prizes go to our website third-quarter TD spree The New Westminster Hyacks racked up 423 rushing yards in hammering the Handsworth Royals 42-14 in B.C. high school AAA varsity football in North Vancouver last Friday. The win gives the No. 5 ranked Hyacks a 3-1 record in the Western Conference and 5-2 overall heading into a key conference clash this Friday. Quarterback Jamie Shiho scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter to give the Hyacks a 21-14 halftime lead, although it could have been tied if Handsworth hadn’t run out of time with the ball on the New West one-yard line. “After jumping out to an early lead our kids lost their focus and Handsworth took advantage,” said Hyacks head coach Farhan Lalji, who was upset the Royals managed to convert eight of 10 third-downs to keep drives alive. “We couldn’t get off the field on third downs and we were fortunate to get that stop at the end of the half.” But New West salted the game away with three third-quarter TDs capped by a 35-yard touchdown run by Shiho. Although he didn’t score, Julian Ramirez was New West’s top rusher with 132 yards. Jordan Guzman ran for 83 yards including a 13-yard TD run. Adrian Cagampan carried for 50 yards and a two-yard TD while Brian Cagampan had a 13-yard touchdown run and 25 yards rushing.

Fighting Irish up next on seniors night ⫸

continued from PAGE A23

Matt Seymour collected four passes for 53 yards, and made four tackles, including one for a loss, on defence. “Offensively we executed our run game very well. We’ve made such a big emphasis on [Seymour] this season, [Friday] with the conditions it was Julian’s day and he ran hard. We also played without three offensive starters and the guys who filled in did a solid job,” said Lalji. Jeff Lugtu and Rochon Battacharya had seven tackles each while Jorge Yarwood had three tackles and two sacks.

Big offensive/defensive lineman Harper Sherman also had three tackles and snagged an interception. In the second half we settled down in the secondary and played much better overall. But defensively we will need to be much more consistent [Friday] against [Vancouver College],” said Lalji. Vancouver College Fighting Irish (1-2 conference, 2-3 overall) will be at Mercer Stadium on Friday to play the Hyacks. It will be seniors night when the team will acknowledge players in their final year of eligibility. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

• The junior varsity Hyacks also came away winners last week downing the Rick Hansen Hurricanes 39-22 in Abbotsford. New West got two touchdowns from both Trew Dancey (28 and 15 yards) and Josh Olango (10, three). Jonah Shaw also scored on a one-yard run while Ben Tjernagel had an 82-yard put return for a TD in the third quarter. The Hyacks are 5-0 in league play and 6-0 against B.C. competition. They will play the Mission Roadrunners at Mercer Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 16, 5:30 p.m.

Quality and value at Morningstar’s Robertson Heights By Kerry Vital

Maple Ridge has welcomed Morningstar Homes with open arms, already making its newest single-family home project, Robertson Heights, a huge success after just a few weeks. “We recognized that today’s single-family home buyer is looking not only for quality and value, but innovation as well,” says Deborah Calahan, vice-president of sales and marketing for Morningstar. “We’ve taken the time to do our homework,

researching ideas that are fresh and new and re-creating them in a home where affordability is key.” Ranging from 2,625 to 3,072 square feet including unfinished basements, the three- and four-bedroom homes include some pretty amazing features. Among them are vaulted ceilings, window seats and the gourmet kitchens that Morningstar is known for. “We always strive to offer our purchasers the best,” says Calahan. “In a market where many people consider single-

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

family home ownership out of reach, we’ve pleasantly surprised potential purchasers by providing not only an affordable home but one that is truly innovative with the bells and whistles you’d expect to see in a much larger home.” Morningstar held their grand opening of Robertson Heights in late September, and sold 21 homes in the first two weeks, making the neighbourhood one of the most successful yet. Calahan points out that the six furnished show homes give potential buyers the ability to look at all of their options before making the final decision on which home to buy. Robertson Heights is Morningstar’s second project in Maple Ridge. The first, The Summit at Grant Hill, is already over 50 per cent sold out after opening just two months ago. Homes at Robertson Heights start at $449,900 including GST. For more information, visit www.mstarhomes.com, call 604-380-4708 or stop by the sales office at 10455 Robertson Street, Maple Ridge, open daily except Friday between noon and 6 p.m.

Stunning views are just one of the beautiful features at Odessa Group’s Harrison Highlands. Recreation opportunities are just minutes away, and the homes offer excellent curb appeal due to their Craftsman architecture.

Homes without compromise at Harrison Highlands By Kerry Vital

At Odessa Group’s Harrison Highlands, buyers won’t have to compromise on what they’re looking for in a new home. “This is a place where people can live where they play,” says Heath Stone, managing partner at Odessa Group. “There is definitely a demand for these homes.” Harrison Highlands is just minutes from Harrison Lake, Mission, Agassiz and the Hemlock Valley Ski Resort, as well as several other opportunities for leisure and recreation. “Sandpiper Golf Club and salmon and

sturgeon fishing are only two minutes away!” says Stone. Harrison Highlands recently celebrated its grand opening weekend, and the response was tremendous. “This is the type of project that people have been waiting for,” Stone says. There are two distinct communities at Harrison Highlands: Woodside and Briarwood. The exclusive Briarwood homes are located in a gated area, though the home types are the same for both communities within the larger community of Harrison Highlands. There are a variety of available

floorplans, including ranchers, one-and-ahalf storey plans and two-storey homes, with two to four bedrooms. The master-on-main floorplans have been particularly popular, Stone says. Two-thirds of the homes at Harrison Highlands will include this feature. The Craftsman architecture offers excellent curb appeal, while the expansive interiors feature nine-foot vaulted ceilings and large windows to allow the natural light to flood the home. European-made high-quality laminate flooring is featured throughout the main level, while gourmet-quality kitchens include maple cabinetry and elegant countertops (quartz in the Briarwood homes and laminate in the Woodside homes). The ensuite bathrooms in the master suite include dual sinks for added convenience, a relaxing soaker tub and a separate shower with tile surround and a frameless glass door. Homes

at Woodside include heated floors in the ensuite, while the Briarwood homes have infloor heat in the master bedroom as well. The community includes homes with parking for recreational vehicles, landscaped parks and natural trails with amazing river and mountain views. “There’s always something to see here,” Stone says. “Just check out our views!” Future plans at Harrison Highlands include a neighbourhood commercial area for potential grocery stores, restaurants and other retail spaces. “This is a fantastic place to raise a family,” Stone says. Homes at Harrison Highlands start at $379,000, including GST. For more information, visit www.harrisonhighlands. ca or call toll-free 1-888-OUR-VIEW (6878439). The presentation centre is open Friday to Sunday between noon and 5 p.m. at 1524 Woodside Boulevard in Kent.
