Bad intersection has to wait for fix I CITY COUNCIL opts to consider other sources of funding.

Upgrades for a high-crash intersection are on hold as the city searches for ways to cover a funding shortfall. Safety improvements for the three-way intersection at the old Island Highway, Boundary Avenue and Northfield Road were slated to start this year, but are now on pause while the city seeks approximately $800,000 in additional funding. The site was ranked as the third-highest crash intersection on Vancouver Island by ICBC in 2013 and saw 340 collisions between 2007 and 2011. Poul Rosen, the city’s manager of engineering projects, said upgrading the intersection to make it safer is a priority, but it’s also a complex undertaking. Several jurisdictions are involved, including the Island Corridor Foundation and the Ministry of Transportation. The city originally estimated the project would cost $2 million and had agreed to split the bill with the province. Designs now peg the bill at $2.9 million due to costs tied in with the railroad crossing, scope of the storm system and earth

Nanaimo MPs not harmed in Parliament Hill shooting BY KaRL YU The News BulleTiN

Nanaimo-area members of Parliament weren’t harmed in a shooting in Ottawa on Wednesday morning. According to reports, a soldier standing at Ottawa’s National War Memorial was shot and killed. A gunman was said to have made it into Parliament Hill’s Centre Block and was said

to have been killed. Jean Crowder, NDP MP for Nanaimo-Cowichan, told the News Bulletin she wasn’t on the hill but was at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal a few blocks away from the memorial. She said she was OK, but was rattled by the incident. “I saw it on Twitter and within a couple of minutes, there was an announcement made in the tribunal hearing that there was a situ-

ation, but it wasn’t clear yet what was going to happen and shortly after that they put the building into lockdown,” Crowder said, adding people were asked to stay away from windows. James Lunney, Conservative Nanaimo-Alberni MP, couldn’t immediately comment but was said to be OK, according to Bobby Wollock, a spokesman from Lunney’s Ottawa office. See CANADA /3

works and paving. ICBC has indicated it can chip in $95,000 and the city has asked for time to investigate potential rail crossing grants and discuss an increased share from the Ministry of Transportation. Preparation for the project has cost the city about $361,700 to date “We would like to see it completed sooner rather than later, but you know we still have these funding challenges we have to work through,” Rosen said. City staff members will look at a rail grant, but would have to apply the August of the year before the money would be used. If the city waits, it would induce a significant delay in completing the project, Rosen said. The intersection includes three major roadways. In 2013 the city logged 9,500 people travelling daily on Northfield and 6,600 on Boundary in 2011. Kathy Ridgway, manager for National Car and Truck Sales on Northfield, said the intersection is very busy and is surprised there are not more accidents. She believes Boundary should become a one-way street. Proposed upgrades would see changes like dedicated eastbound left and right turn lanes on Northfield, a leftturn only traffic signal, and a new rail crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Canada still safe place, says MP From /1

Wollock said opposition MPs had been evacuated from Centre Block, but Lunney, along with other Conservative MPs, were in lockdown at a secure location in Centre Block. Despite Wednesday’s shootings, Crowder said she doesn’t think security on Parliament Hill needs to be tightened.

“I think security on the Hill is pretty good ... our security staff are professional people and they’re very good and they’re very thorough at what they do, so I have no qualms about that,” Crowder said. In 10-plus years as an MP, Crowder said she has never experienced anything like what transpired Wednesday.

“Canada is known to be such a safe country. It doesn’t mean that bad things don’t happen, but one of the things many of our taxi drivers [who aren’t] born in Canada tell me is they are so amazed that parliamentarians can just be out and about with no concerns anywhere, ” she said.

Resident Nadine Rigsby no longer feels safe in her Haliburton Street neighbourhood thanks to violence, public intoxication and “hoarderstyle” piles of garbage from nearby rental houses. “It’s like the yellow line on the road is the train tracks and the other side of the street is a mess,” she said. “It’s really out of control so I am happy the city has claimed [the houses] a nuisance.” Nanaimo city council slapped three rental homes with nuisance titles Monday after excessive police calls and reports of suspected drug trafficking, noise and fighting, despite the appeal of one landlord to hold off on the designation. According to the Nanaimo RCMP, the properties on 25 and 33 Haliburton and 61 View streets have seen about 60 complaints in total this year, and little to no action taken to improve the situation. Halibur ton residents described disturbances like drunken yelling, violence and potential fire hazards from the properties. Resident Philip Clark told the News Bulletin he purchased his home four years ago when he thought the area was on an upturn, but in the last two years has seen it take a dramatic slide back the other way. He hopes the new designation is the start of action to resolve the situation. “Proof will be in the pudding I guess,” he said. Mai Nguyen, landlady of the

two properties on Haliburton, and her advocate Tia Fawdry don’t agree with all the claims made by neighbours, but acknowledged there is a transient population, including people with addictions, and high traffic to go with those lifestyles. They had called for council to give them 60 days to come up with a safety plan and connect residents with integrated services, but Coun. Ted Greves said there’s no way he’d grant the delay after what he saw and heard and Mayor John Ruttan, said it’s “extremely wrong” for taxpayers to pay for ongoing costs. Under the designation, the property owners are billed for nuisance call-outs from police and bylaw officers. “We try really much to get that waived because I don’t think that’s right. They have to give me a chance…” Nguyen said. “They just told me and we fixed it up and you know, we try to help the people on the street also. They have no home.”

Fawdry said she and Nguyen need to be proactive. On Tuesday they placed a lock on the back door of one of the homes to keep out unwanted guests. “We don’t want it to be a nuisance,” she said. “It’s a nuisance for us too.” The City of Nanaimo designates a property as a nuisance as a last resort after police and city staff members have identified issues to property owners and given them time to address them. Randy Churchill, the city’s manager of bylaw services, says the municipality will go through an awful lot to help the owners as long as they are making an effort. Improvements, for example, can require better screening of tenants and looking at references. “We want them to succeed and they do…” he said. “We don’t have any that don’t get to a successful conclusion, some just take longer and some necessitate we go to council to put in a costing element.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Police probe suspicious vehicle fire ALMANAC

Photo submitted

Police are searching for the culprit who broke into a 2003 Honda CR-V and set it on fire on South Forks Road on the weekend.

Nanaimo Mounties are investigating a suspicious vehicle fire from the weekend. The owner of a 2003 Honda CR-V parked the sport-utility vehicle on South Forks Road on Saturday at about 8 a.m. and went hunting for a few hours. While he was away, someone broke into the car and set it on fire, destroying the vehicle and its contents, which included two children’s car seats, fishing rods and a wallet. The wallet, emptied of its contents, was later found later some distance

from the torched Honda. Coastal Fire Centre reported the fire to police, but since the car was parked outside the city limits, firefighters were not dispatched to the scene. Police arrived to find the vehicle still smouldering at about 10:25 a.m. A passerby told investigators he had seen the vehicle intact at about 9 a.m. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Rally stresses right to vote I MY VOTE, My Voice will be held Tuesday. BY KARL YU The News BulleTiN

The importance of voting will be a subject that will be stressed at Nanaimo City Hall Tuesday (Oct. 28). The Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society is hosting the My Vote is My Voice Rally Tuesday. Hilde Schlosar, executive director, said anyone is welcome and pointed to the fact that only 26 per cent of Nanaimoites turned out to vote in the 2011 election. “We know that a lot of people come from countries who don’t have the right

to vote, or to vote freely for the people that they choose. We want to share how significant that is with the community because a lot of Canadians who were born here don’t exercise their right to vote and I think they don’t realize how lucky they are,” Schlosar said. Rim Shin is a naturalized Canadian citizen hailing from South Korea who said she is planning to cast a ballot on Nov. 15. She said voting is important because it exercises her right to practise democracy and allows her the opportunity to give her opinion. Like Nanaimo, South Korea is also suffering through some voter apathy but the government

is actively trying to increase voters, Shin said. “Government is trying to encourage young people to vote using [social networking] and mobile [devices],” Shin said. The multicultural society encourages new Canadians to take advantage of the right to vote. “Voting and running for office are the only two rights and freedoms that you get in addition to those that you already have as a landed immigrant or permanent resident,” Schlosar said. “Becoming a citizen means you can exercise your right to vote. So we feel it’s an important message.” The rally will be held at noon on Tuesday.

TWO SPOTS will be filled by Gabriolans on Gulf Island board.

Four fresh candidates from Gabriola Island will be contending for two spots on the Islands Trust council in the upcoming civic election. Chris Bowers, former editor and publisher of The Flying Shingle newspaper; Melanie Mamoser, an environmental protection officer with the Ministry of Environment; Heather Nicholas, a library assistant at the Gabriola Island library and Peter Phillips, a former Islands Trust

bylaw enforcement officer will have their names on the ballot. The Islands Trust is an organization of local governments governing islands in the Salish Sea, including Gabriola and Salt Spring Islands. Bowers, Mamoser, Nicholas and Phillips are four of 38 candidates that are vying for 24 Islands Trust trustee positions. “Our island communities are usually very engaged with local elections,” said Linda Adams, chief administrative officer of Islands Trust, in a press release. Sheila Malcolmson, a current trustee and board trust

chairwoman, will not be seeking re-election as she recently received the federal NDP nomination for the NanaimoLadysmith riding. Trustee Giselle Rudischer will not be seeking another term, either. The Islands Trust chairperson and vice-chairpeople are elected by trustees. That vote is expected to take place at the trust’s inaugural meeting in December. The Regional District of Nanaimo is hosting a workshop this Saturday (Oct. 25) as part of its Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program. The idea behind the program is to empower laypeople to demonstrate self-resiliency in certain emergency situations. The full-day workshop will feature a range of speakers who will guide residents on how to build and maintain emergency planning teams on their blocks.

For example, RCMP Victim Services will talk about identifying and assisting people who are in shock and B.C. Forest Service will offer fire safety advice. There will also be discussion of household insurance, communications and best practices in neighbourhood emergency preparedness. Beefs & bouquets BEEF To Lantzville for cutting the tax exemption for Aspengrove school and setting a dangerous precedent. Let’s apply the same reasoning to all churches who get a free ride on prime real estate, yet the vast majority do not use them. Religion is your choice, just as it’s a choice to send your child to private school, so the public shouldn’t pick up the tab, right?

BOUQUET To the staff at Gordon’s Home Sales for helping a friend buy a house. BOUQUET To Tina at Natural U Spa for donating her time and money to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has donated free pedicures for us. This is being done in honour of her mother who has MS and lives in Taiwan.

BEEF To the people who abuse handicapped parking who are obviously not handicapped. Just because you have a handicapped sticker for another person who you may drive in that car, when that person is not in the car with you, you do not have the privilege of using the handicapped parking.

BEEF To the secret people who got our taxpayers’ nine million dollars for land at Linley Valley.

BOUQUET to Gord and all the staff at Long Lake Nurseries. Gord is very patient with gardening questions and gives great advice.

BOUQUET To the B.C. residents choosing not to buckle to this province’s government and hydro provider for refusing smart meters.

BOUQUET To all realistic seniors who recognize their diminished skills and decide to give up driving. You make yourself and everyone else safer. Bravo, Mom and Dad.

BEEF To the drivers who think it is not against the law to text while stopped at a red light. You are still behind the wheel of a vehicle that is in operation.

BEEF To the van driver for shouting and cursing at the workers at Dairy Queen. I hope you lose sleep and customers over your behavior.

BEEF To people who say that vegetables and salads are delicious.

BOUQUET Bundles of thanks for my beautiful eyebrows to Donna at Neon Nails who does the best semi-permanent eyebrows and other wonderful esthetics for ladies at great prices. She is so gentle and very good at what she does.

BOUQUET Thank you to the person who found my red wallet with duct tape on it at Wal-Mart the day before Thanksgiving. You turned it in with everything, plus money. May karma bless you.

BOUQUET To Fredrich’s Honey. It is rare today to find businesses run with integrity and concern for their customers. A personal thank you for your kindness and generosity. BEEF Why does it seem that I’m the only one on the road going the speed limit and stopping at stop signs?

BEEF To the person who is leaving apples in the Rock City neighbourhood. Leave them in your own yard. We don’t need raccoons and rats around.

BOUQUET To Dennis and the staff at Budget Brake and Muffler Auto Centre. Your customer service is second to none. We sincerely appreciate that you went above and beyond to ensure our vehicle was ready as promised.

BEEF To the veterinary clinic. They decided our little dog had a crushed larynx and that he needed to have a tooth pulled at an estimated cost of $1,500. I took him to another vet – no sign of a crushed larynx, and he did need a tooth pulled at the estimated cost of $700. Unfortunately his throat was so full of cancer he had to be put down immediately. We are heartbroken, and also angry at the abuse, threats and gouging the first vet did to us.

BOUQUET To Lisa, Dean and Jill for their dedication to continuing the theatre group, we wouldnt have a theatre if it wasn’t for you. Thank you also to the committee, and stage manager Sarah for all the time and dedication they put into creating awesome shows for all of Nanaimo to see. Thank you, love the Schmooze family.

BEEF To gas prices. As I write this, gas costs 115.9 cents per litre in Victoria and Comox, 125.9 in Vancouver and 128.9 in Nanaimo. Stop ripping us off.

BEEF To the Ministry of Transportation and the forestry company for ignoring the illegal and illicit activities on McKeown Road. For seven years the neighbourhoods have been asking for the gate to be moved to the parkway trail entrance.

Get informed, then cast vote Come the civic election Nov. 15, the more voters the merrier, and if they’re informed voters, even better. B.C.’s local election campaigns officially began two weeks ago and have been going on, unofficially, since long before that. The race reached a milepost this week with the first true all-candidates meeting, hosted by Progressive Nanaimo last night after press time. Meetings like that one, and the media coverage – pick up the next issue of the News Bulletin – are one way for voters to get themselves informed about the array of choices. There will be other allcandidates meetings and forums in the next few weeks. The simplest source of information, perhaps, is the fall harvest of election signs that has sprouted on countless street corners around the city. Names, faces, slogans and website URLs try to point voters in a desired direction. Social media, too, has some role to play, as candidates or their campaign managers have the ability to spread the message they want in their own words. The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce launched its own municipal election website this week, giving candidates a chance to present a business plan, so to speak, for the city. The Bulletin’s election info is also accessible on our website, where readers can check out questionnaires filled out by men and women running for mayor, city council, school trustee or regional district director. We will examine the election issues more closely over the coming weeks, and we hope readers will let us know which issues they feel are most important via a letter to the editor or a quick Facebook message. What we’re saying is that there’s a ton of information out there, and more to come. There’s no reason not to be an informed voter, and there’s every reason to become one.

The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

For a fascinating look at the Columbia and Kootenay this period, I recommend Barrie

Sanford’s book Steel Rails and Iron Men. Sanford recounts the fateful decision of the CPR to turn north at Medicine Hat and push Canada’s defining railway through the Kicking Horse Pass, leaving the mineral-rich Kootenay region open to competitors for rail freight service. A key figure of those days is James Dunsmuir, who inherited his family coal fortune and served as B.C. premier from 1900 to 1902. He ended up owning a large part of Vancouver Island in exchange for building the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway, which he sold to the CPR in 1905, the same year he locked out miners in his coal operations for their push to organize a union. Dunsmuir took a turn as B.C.’s eighth Lieutenant Governor, sold his coal business and retired to his estate, Hatley Castle, which is now part of Royal Roads University. He is buried at Victoria’s Ross Bay Cemetery. As Halloween approaches, it’s easy to imagine a chuckle from his grave as the railway barons once again rake it in. u Tom Fletcher is a columnist and legislative reporter for Black Press.

To the Editor,

I read ICBC’s Nanaimo crash site report with great interest. It said that between four intersections, we had 220 accidents or more per year or more than one per week per intersection. I then did a little research and found that these same four intersections had the highest for a number of years now. It seemed odd to

me that Nanaimo city council, so concerned about the safety in Harewood and the effects of the Colliery dam, would not have made improvements to these intersections. We know for sure that these life-threatening accidents are happening at each of the intersections, every week. So the question is why has there been

nothing done? Is it because intersection safety is not one of those things that you could not vote against in an election year? It is time for council to spend our tax dollars on projects that make the present safer, which is a much better legacy than high taxes and empty conference centres.

No government protects environment To the Editor:

Re: Oil protest a slippery slope for civic politicians, Opinion, Oct. 9. Tom Fletcher’s analysis of jurisdiction regarding pipeline expansion and oil distribution in B.C. ignores one important fact. I have one postal address and one primary residence, one planet on which to live. I also am governed by three political jurisdictions that are supposed to manage “the common good” on behalf of all. None do so. I pay taxes and idealize that some offi-

cial somewhere will handle environmental issues in sustainable ways. Not so. No wonder I am an alienated citizen, disgusted with public sector overexpenditures and irresponsibilities regarding basic survival. I am delighted that some new faces and names are appearing on ballot lists. My hope is that voters will listen to these candidates. Somewhere among them are future leaders who will help guide us to a more viable Canada.

Betty Donaldson Courtenay

Industry should be civic election issue To the Editor,

We ignore our B.C. resource sector economy at our own peril. For workers in B.C., a job in mining and exploration, for example, is a low-risk, high-return activity. The mining industry maintains world-leading health, safety, and environmental standards, and the environ-

mental review processes that govern whether a new mine can go ahead or not are stringent, fair, and science-based. The $10 billion annual gross revenue generated by B.C.’s mining industry also provides a 300-to-1 return on the government’s investment in the sector. Millions of dollars more are

generated for local municipalities through property taxes on head offices, industryrelated trades, and suppliers. It’s time for all of our municipal politicians to get on board and take a stand in support of B.C.’s resource sector. Demand it from them in the election Nov. 15.

hen a kindergarten teacher suggested to Sarah Vardy’s parents that they should seriously consider enrolling their daughter in music lessons, they weren’t exactly enthused. “Basically I wouldn’t shut up,” Vardy told the News Bulletin. “As a kid I was just talking and singing and talking and singing.” However, Vardy’s parents came around to the idea and enrolled their daughter in music lessons and the rest was history. “They decided to go ahead and do it and every year they asked me if I wanted to keep continuing and I said yes and I just literally fell in love with it,” Vardy recalled. Since then Vardy’s voice has taken her around the world as a soprano singer. On Saturday (Oct. 25), Vardy will be performing at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church as part of the Opera Nanaimo’s Opera Gems for Intrigue and Fantasy performance. “I am really excited,” Vardy said. “It is my first time ever performing in Nanaimo.” Vardy’s performance is the final Opera Gems concert of the season for Opera Nanaimo and will also feature baritone Andrew Greenwood and pianist Sharon Wishart along with emerging local Liam Robertson and Lauryn Collins. Vardy said the series is wonderful. “It is giving young singers an opportunity and bringing additional musicians, so people can see how and what it is like to grow in the business.” Vardy was born into a military family and spent the majority of her life moving around Canada. Although the Langford, B.C. resident’s love for singing began at a very early age, it wasn’t until she reached her mid-teens that she discovered the opera genre.

Soprano Sarah Vardy performs at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 7:30 p.m. as part of Opera Nanaimo’s Opera Gems concert series.

“I was listening to a classical record and I sort of just fell in love with Maria Callas. She is my favourite opera singer of all time and I would just listen to her over and over and over.”

MORNING STAR BISON RANCH

Since graduating from the University of British Columbia’s vocal performance program, Vardy has performed in a number of countries including Germany, Italy and China. “China for me was a culture shock,”

During her time with Margison, Vardy learned everything from stagecraft to the business end of the opera industry. “In today’s day and age, opera is not so popular, so there are a lot of cuts and funding issues with all sorts of music,” she said. “He’s able to take you through the nitty-gritty of the business of singing and how to actually be successful in doing it.” Vardy, a winner of the Wallis Memorial Opera Competition in Saskatchewan, said that there is plenty of competition in the opera and that rejection is just a part of the industry. “You deal with rejection on a regular basis,” she said. “You deal with singing amazing and then potentially not getting a part because you’re too short, or they don’t like your hair colour or they are friends with someone else that they want to hire. There are all sorts of things. So you kind of have to get used to the idea that because someone says no doesn’t mean you’re a failure.” Sarah Vardy performs at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25. Dance brings people together

HALLOWEEN EVENT held for families.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD The News BulleTiN

When Neil Cutler realized that some of his co-workers weren’t able to partake in all the festivities that come around Halloween time, he took action. “I noticed that some of the people I worked with didn’t have the opportunity to go to a nightclub and be with friends,” Culter told the News Bulletin. A decade ago, Cutler decided to create a family oriented Halloween dance, known as the Nanaimo Community Halloween Video Dance, which allows people of all walks of life to party in a safe environment. “It began with people with disabilities, both cognitive and physical. It just kept getting bigger and bigger and they started bringing their families around,” Culter said. On Saturday (Oct. 25) St. Paul’s Anglican Church will be transformed into a makeshift nightclub as the Nanaimo Community Halloween Video Dance celebrates its 10th anniversary. “This dance is essentially a community video dance that is open and is a safe

environment,” Cutler said. The Nanaimo Community Halloween Video Dance will feature high-tech lighting, music video screens, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. The event is intended to be family oriented, with no drugs or alcohol. “We really want it to be accessible to anyone,” he said. “If

they can’t make it out to a nightclub, they can come here and this is a nightclub environment.” Cutler never imagined that he would still be organizing community dances a decade after the first Nanaimo Community Halloween Video Dance. “I realized there was a niche for that,” he said. “Just a place

where anyone could enjoy the same night out that adults could do all the time.” Over the past decade, Cutler has received plenty of community support and seen friendships and even romantic relationships form at his dances. “To this day there are a couple relationships that are still happening that happened right at the dance,” he said. “I continue to get the joy each and every dance.” Nanaimo Community Halloween Video Dance takes place at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 100 Chapel St., on Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $2 or canned food. Nanaimo celebrates Halloween There will be no shortage of Halloween-themed things to do in downtown Nanaimo this coming Saturday (Oct. 25). The 2014 Downtown Halloween Howl, which kicks off at noon, features a number of events including a pet parade, trick or treating, extreme pumpkin carving, a massive pumpkin patch and a haunted hotel. The event was organized by the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association and is a family-oriented daylong event. “All of our stuff is family-friendly gore,” said Jane Venet, mar-

CITIZEN MARC looks at notable marijuana crusader Marc emery. BY NICHOLAS PESCOD The News BulleTiN

A documentary that explores the life around Canada’s ‘Prince of Pot’ will be screening in the Harbour City this weekend. On Saturday (Oct. 25) the documentary Citizen Marc will be screening at the Landmark Theatre. Citizen Marc is about the charismatic pro-marijuana activist Marc Emery and was produced and written by Roger Evan Larry and Sandra Tomc. “Marc Emery is a person who has shown us how effective civil disobedience can be,” Larry told the News Bulletin. Citizen Marc explores Emery as a celebrity, his political views and questions whether his libertarianism efforts were able to create any kind of meaningful political discussion or action. “He was convicted for sell-

ing marijuana seeds over the Internet to Americans from Canada,” Larry explained. “There are many Canadians that have done this before, but none were extradited from Canada and shipped off to the States to serve time, so Marc is unique that way.” The idea to create a documentary on Emery began after Larry and Tomc wanted to do a long-term documentary project. “We were fascinated by this person [Emery] who spent their whole life fighting for freedom, but in a way fighting for freedom by getting into jail or by trying to get into jail,” he said. Larry explained that Citizen Marc is a complex film, which looks at Emery’s beginnings right up to just

before his extradition. “People are hopefully going to come away with a bunch of discussions that they’re going to have with the people that they watched it with,” Larry said. He added that people who don’t know much about Emery will walk away feeling somewhat conflicted. “People who know nothing about Marc Emery tend to face a dilemma about how they feel about him after watching the film,” Larry said. Citizen Marc screens at Landmark Cinema, 6631 North Island Hwy on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. There will be a question and answer period with Larry after the screening. Hillbillies take over haunted house For nearly a decade, Nanaimo has been home to a spooky house that is designed to scare anyone who enters it. Created by Island Haunt Productions, the theme for the 3,000 square-foot spooky home is Hillbilly Revenge, a cross between horror movies The Hills Have Eyes and Deliverance. “Mutants, crazy hillbillies taking their revenge on everyone else,” Kerry Cass, co-owner of Island Productions said about the house, which is located on the Vancouver Island Exhibition

Cass said that the house is designed to spook people and isn’t intended for young children, but the decision is up to parents. “We are there to be scary,” she said. “You wouldn’t be there if you wouldn’t want us to scare you.” Hillbilly Revenge also runs from Monday (Oct. 27) until Oct. 31. Exhibit shares war stories By Nicholas PEscod The News BulleTiN

Canada’s war efforts in the Second World War are often associated with Europe. However, there was a Canadian war effort in the Pacific. Currently on display at the Nanaimo Museum is the Ring of Fire: Canadians in the Pacific in the Second World War, a travelling exhibit that shares the stories of war veterans who

served in the Pacific. “Basically the Ring of Fire highlights the Pacific campaign … which a lot of veterans and historians feel is kind of the forgotten war,” said Aimee Greenaway, the museum’s interpretation curator. Ring of Fire remains on display at the Nanaimo Museum until Nov. 16 and features a number of his-

torical artifacts and stories of veterans. “It really focuses on artifacts,” she said. “You will see a lot of veteran profiles as you’re going through this.” One of those profiles is on George McCabe, who served in the Aleutian Islands. McCabe, who has since died, was raised in Prince George. Following his time in the war he moved to Nanaimo, where he became a well-known chef at the Malaspina Hotel. McCabe was also one of the bakers who made the world’s biggest cake in 1958 to

celebrate the province’s centennial. Ring of Fire runs until Nov. 16. For information visit w w w. n a n a i m o m u seum.com.

Cute ute continues to charm Canadian drivers It’s hard to remember a time when we didn’t have the RAV4 in Canada. Toyota helped develop the ‘cute-ute’ vehicle segment from Japan. We had never seen anything like these vehicles before but they went on to forever change the marketplace and the way a family gets around. Today the compact sportutility vehicle market has become so popular it will soon exceed the compact car in terms of overall sales, which has been, for decades, the cornerstone of the Canadian marketplace. The Toyota RAV4 continues to be a sales market leader and for good reason. Many buyers put their money into what I call ‘The Bank of Toyota’ and know they will get a good return in terms of reliability, practicality and resale value. Looks In terms of design, Toyota wanted to make this latest

Gone is the old swing-out tailgate, replaced by a proper lift gate, which is now framed with protruding tail lamps that look unique but also help with aerodynamics. Verdict Toyota is sticking with what works. This approach might be viewed as a step behind but other might look at it as tried-and-true technology that is reliable and still delivers solid fuel ratings. My time with the RAV4 LE confirmed that Toyota knows how to make a thoroughly practical and easy to use vehicle that pleases all passengers.

The 2015 Toyota RAV4 is a tried-and-true sport ute, says columnist.

Stop Heartburn

and Reflux Naturally Photo submitted

Khalid Alzuraij, a Vancouver Island University business student; Peter de Reuver, a competition sponsor; Dr. Ken Hammer, professor in the Faculty of Management; and Fathiyyah Fallata, an MBA student who is coordinating the competition as an intern for Startup Nanaimo go over plans for the VIU Business Plan Competition.

Business ‘dragons’ judge students Students at Vancouver Island University entering a new business plan competition will have a chance to test their entrepreneurial ideas before a panel of Dragon’s Den-style judges this fall. VIU, the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation and the Pieter de Reuver Foundation have partnered to launch the VIU Business Plan Competition, which will see students in teams or individually compete for donated cash prizes totaling $10,000. The idea for the competition was seeded last spring in a reading circle hosted by Startup Nanaimo. Prizes will be awarded at VIU Nov. 28, when participants make their pitches to a panel of expert

judges from Innovation Island, Tourism Vancouver Island Tourism Nanaimo, the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, NEDC and community businesses. Dr. Ken Hammer, instructor in VIU’s MBA and management programs, said there is tremendous untapped potential at VIU, in terms of students’ entrepreneurial drive and ability to generate fresh ideas. “Students are constantly coming up with new ideas and innovative solutions in their courses,” he said. “What we need to do is recognize this creativity and entrepreneurial behaviour.” Full details on the competition can be found at www.via.ca/bp.

Prevent reflux by having an alkaline balanced stomach with the Bell Acidic Stomach & Alkaline Balance #39. You may not need more chemicals or drugs ever after. Many millions suffer needlessly. Read the guarantee. Truthful actual experiences from real people: <Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC <Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief with noside effects and no antacids needed anymore. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA <Very happy with acid reflux relief. Last 4 years had increasing reflux despite taking antacid products. Grzegorz Smirnow, 43, Mt. Prospect, IL <Burning in my stomach, bloating, headaches all stopped! For 20 years I was tortured with stomach acid, reflux, belching, even my brain was affected. Within 2 days after taking Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline balance I had relief of all my health problems I suffered with for so long. Floyd D. Davis, 89, Denham Springs, LA <Heartburn, acid reflux, stomach trouble for many years. Doctors gave me different pills, but I had no lasting relief. Had every test known to man. I finally talked to my health food store and they said Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance really works. It sure does. I had my husband and son take it and they all had the same results. I can now eat even spicy food with no problems. Verna Conti, 80, London, ON.

Calming Stress

Helps to promote healthy mood balance, relaxation, use as a sleep aid and mental stress. Stress is one of the main causes of high blood pressure. Truthful experience by people: < I am calm now in stressful situations! In the past 10 years I had a very short fuse, because my job is quite unpredictable. After I started Bell Calming Chronic Stress #66 the difference was amazing. My reactions to stressful situations are totally changed. I also have more energy, too. I don’t yell at others. I have more patience and I am much happier as well. Thank you. Mary-Anne Thompson, 61, Lasalle, ON < It truly made me feel calmer. I was able to better cope with stress and was not afraid to deal with stressful situations head-on, instead of avoiding them as I had done in the past. Consequently I was also able to sleep better at night. No more waking up hyperventilating from stress of the day. Peter Armbruster, 48, Waterloo, ON. < I have a very high stress career in the film industry. There was no time for relaxation or meditation as you are on demand for 12-15 hours a day with no breaks. Since using Bell #66I am able to focus on the tasks at hand with more patience. Thank you for your help! Christina Ollson, 36, Burnaby, BC <It’s exactly one year since we began using Bell Calming Chronic Stress #66 NPN 80041855 #66 for our two sons. Our local health food store recommended it. Both of our sons suffer from anxiety disorders. Our older son (14) was going through puberty and had become quite unmanageable, because he is much larger than I am. We are delighted with the immediate results. Our older son became his former sweet self and our younger son’s (12) anxiety is dramatically reduced. Thank you so much. Donna Van Veen, 48, Grand Prairie, AB.

CONTROL WEIGHT = CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR

By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD.

Long term weight control without controlling blood sugar is destined to fail. This is why we have an epidemic of obesity. How it works: Stops the “roller coaster” of cravings and appetite to eat foods like sugar and starches that cause high blood glucose levels, which then brings on your pancreas to automatically pump insulin into your blood stream. Subsequently the high level of insulin precipitates low levels of blood glucose and cravings for more sugar and starchy carbohydrates (breads, noodles, crackers, cereals, french fries) which you don’t need and therefore it goes into unwanted fat storage and being overweight. Experts now recognize these basic facts.#40 Bell Blood Sugar Imbalance helps to stop this vicious cycle and puts you in control. Dr. Hammond says this natural product works 10 times better #40 NPN 80040208 because it reprograms our brain and pancreas to release insulin in a controlled manner. Helpful non-fattening eating suggestions in the box. Fibers and exercise like walking are beneficial and help after you control the underlying basic blood sugar imbalance. < Working in a health food store I heard people saying how well #40 works. I tried it myself. Finally a product that controls my blood sugar much better than what anything else we had in the store. Thank you for helping people around the world. Irene M. Urdialez, 43, Brynton Beach, FL < My medical indicated pre-diabetic. I took #40. When re-tested readings were fine. This helped my metabolism and my weight is down 25 lbs. I am grateful to the health food store people for their advice. Michael O’Brien, 60, Rutherglen, ON < I finally found the right approach to lose weight. I tried for 3 years to lose weight. After starting #40 my blood sugar is stable now. I was able to stop overeating and lost my excess weight. Sara John, 40, Kitchener, ON < I was struggling for 15 years with weight gain in spite of diet and exercise. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I will forever be grateful to the store manager that explained to me to take #40 and read suggestions to avoid fattening foods. I lost 70 lbs. My fasting blood sugar is now 92. My 2 hour post meal glucose level is now 92 as well. My new shape raised my self-esteem and gave me immeasurable peace of mind. Karen Maples, 55, Clarksville, TN <Diabetic eliminated high blood sugar levels with #40. My readings were 140 to 200 and are now 99 to 122 range where I want it to be. Before I bought about 10 different supplement that were more expensive and didn’t work as well. I also lost some weight. A great improvement in my health and daily living. Randy Spensley received a kidney transplant in 2012. Right now there are 72 people in Nanaimo who need a life-saving kidney transplant. By participating in a Community Conversation organized by The Kidney Foundation of Canada (BC Branch), you could help save the life of a British Columbian like Randy. How? By helping to identify barriers that stop people from registering as organ donors, and generating ideas to increase kidney transplants in our community. Together we can make it easier for people like Randy to get a kidney transplant.

Social service helps youths navigate transition period Youths with developmental disabilities can get help during the transition to adulthood through a new service model launched in Nanaimo last fall. The Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation’s Navigator service helps an individual identify goals and ways of meeting them – like where to live or get a job – assists in developing a plan and co-ordinates the services and supports to make that plan concrete. The Nanaimo site is one of four early implementation sites ‘prototyping’ the new model for youth. As of this month, 67 people in the mid Island have been referred to the new services in these communities. “It’s rewarding to hear directly from families describing their positive experiences working alongside a navigator within this model,” said Andrew Fidell, the program’s integrated services and supports director, in a press release.

Yoshida, Naomi Kimiko Kathleen October 17, 1971 – October 3, 2014

We lost Naomi on Friday, October 3, 2014. Devoted and beloved daughter of the late Sat and Missy Yoshida. Deeply loved sister of Cynthia (Jace) and proud Auntie of Cooper. She will also be missed by countless friends and family. Naomi spent many years caring for her father during his extended illness and was incredibly close to her mother. She always took the time to support her family and friends in any way that she could. Naomi was a bright light and made an impact on everyone wherever she went. She was a wonderful listener and always able to provide diplomacy and an open heart. A lifelong learner, lover of all things esoteric and a believer in magic, Naomi was also incredibly private and hid her struggles from us all. We know that Naomi is travelling through that unfathomable beyond and will have many amazing adventures on her way. We release her in love and sadness and wish her well on her journey. Our lesson is to support and love each other in kindness and in wonder and to take the time to share our lives and stories with friends old and new. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to Loaves and Fishes in Naomi’s memory.

MEN, WOMEN both seeded No. 1 before semifinal matches.

Clippers to battle Warriors BY GREG SAKAKI

BY GREG SAKAKI

THE NEWS BULLETIN

THE NEWS BULLETIN

The VIU Mariners have been the best team on the pitch all season long. Going into provincials, they’re good enough to win it all, but there are never any guarantees in soccer. An unlucky bounce, a teensy mistake or a gust of wind could be all it takes to turn a game. “The big thing for us is to get the players to play as simple as possible, but how they know how to play,” said Bill Merriman, coach of VIU’s men’s team. “Play safe, but play aggressive.” Anup Kang, coach of the women’s side, said his players have earned the bounces that have gone in their favour. “We’ve worked hard and the luck has gone our way at times and that’s all we’ll ask of them, is to keep working hard and play our game,” he said. The Pacific Western Athletic Association provincial championships start Friday (Oct. 24) in Squamish. Vancouver Island University’s men (10-2-3) and women (11-3-1) both clinched the top spot in their respective tables, so the ladies play the No. 4-seeded Kwantlen Eagles in the semifinals Friday night and the guys take on the host Quest Kermodes in their semi on Saturday afternoon. “Our preparation has been good, I think, and hopefully we can use this week to get things ready and go for it,” said Merriman. The stakes in the semifinals are massive. B.C. has wild-card berths at nationals, meaning

that if either VIU team wins its semifinal game, it gets to go to the Canadian championships. “That first game has definitely been all our focus,” Merriman said. VIU’s women will try for the same pinpoint concentration. Kang said he wants his Mariners to just play the game, and put

aside the fact it’s the playoffs. “They’ve been really focused in staying in the moment, and I think that’s a big part of why we’re successful this year,” Kang said. All it will take is more of the same, and maybe a little extra, but the Mariners have positioned themselves for success.

“We are really confident…” said Victor Blasco, M’s striker. “We are a team that works every minute. I’m really excited. I think we can do great.” SOCCER TALK … To see two more action photos from Sunday’s game, please visit www. twitter.com/BulletinSports. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

High school football teams grind away

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

NDSS Islanders receiver Tyus Barfoot, middle, makes a catch and laterals to Malik Besseghieur, who ran the ball in for a long touchdown versus the Sentinel Spartans on Friday at Merle Logan Field.

Nanaimo’s varsity football programs are in the thick of things after one team won and one lost last week. The Nanaimo District Secondary School Islanders earned their first league win Friday at Merle Logan Field, a 34-6 thumping of the Sentinel Spartans. The turning point came with zero seconds left in the first half, when Tyus Barfoot caught a 30-yard pass, then lateralled to teammate Malik Besseghieur who ran

another 30 yards to the endzone. “Something changed with that play and the Islanders went out with determination to drive this thing through,” said Nate Stevenson, NDSS coach, in a press release. “I was very excited to see that style of ND edge in the second half.” Besseghieur scored four TDs and Dayton Howard also scored a TD. Quarterback Cole McGarvey threw three TD passes. Defensively, Jeremy

Binnersley had two sacks and an interception and Ben Barrera had seven tackles and a sack. Later that night at Merle Logan Field, the Barsby Bulldogs suffered their first league loss, 13-12 to the Argyle Pipers. GAME ON … The Isles play an exhibition on the road against the Mission Roadrunners on Friday (Oct. 24) while the ’Dawgs visit the Windsor Dukes that day in league play.

The Nanaimo Clippers can see how far they’ve come. T h e c i t y ’s B . C . Hockey League team plays the West Kelowna Warriors this Friday (Oct. 24) for the first time since the season-opening BCHL Showcase tournament. The Warriors outscored the Clippers 7-6 in that one, but Nanaimo has won nine of its 10 games since then. “It was the first weekend there, and not many of the guys really knew how to play with each other. Now we’ve really become more of a team…” said Jake Jackson, Clippers forward. “Last time we gave up a lot of goals and we don’t really give up a lot of goals anymore.” The Shipmen allowed two goals against in two games last weekend and played some of their best hockey of the fall. Jackson said guys have a better understanding of coach Mike Vandekamp’s systems. “It took a little bit of a learning curve to get used to, but I think now that we’re all on the same page and playing well, I think it’s going to work great,” Jackson said. Brendan Taylor, Clipers captain, said the team’s D zone play is “100 times better” and the team is also doing a good job keeping the puck at the other end of the ice. “It’s definitely going to be more of a challenge for them to score,” he said. GAME ON … The Clippers play the Warriors on Friday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena and then host the Surrey Eagles on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Frank Crane. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

MONDAY, OCT. 27TH Washington at Dallas

Rules: 1) For the series of NFL games listed above, simply circle the teams you think will win. 2) Should we have a tie for the most games won, we will use Monday night’s game as a tie breaker. Look over all the football numbers published in the ads accompanying this contest. Select the one you think will be the CLOSEST to the DIFFERENCE IN THE SCORE of the game and write THE ADVERTISER NAME containing the score and the number itself on the line in the entry coupon. 3) The person picking the most games correct each week wins $100. If there is no clear winner after the tiebreaker game, the money will be split. 4) Contest is open to everyone except employees of The Nanaimo News Bulletin. Entries are limited to two per household per week (one per person).
