Candidates numbers up slightly over 2011 GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Did the change in term length from three years to four for civic officials affect the number of candidates willing to commit themselves to public office in West Kootenay/Boundary? The short answer is not really. Although more candidates are seeking positions on municipal councils and fewer on regional districts and school boards compared to 2011, the overall numbers are quite close, showing an increase of about 3.6 per cent. In 2011, 223 candidates
ran for the 136 available positions as mayors, councillors, directors, and school trustees in West Kootenay/ Boundary’s 16 municipalities, two regional districts, and four school districts. This time, 231 candidates are seeking those same positions, which break down as follows: 38 for mayor (versus 30 in 2011), 127 for councillor (compared to 114 three years ago), 26 for regional director (32 last time), and 40 for school trustee (down from 47). Grand Forks produced the greatest number of candidates in both 2011 and 2014: three years ago three
people ran for mayor and 12 for council; this time there are five for mayor and 16 for council. Additionally, four people are running for two school trustee positions, and three are running for regional director of rural Grand Forks. The greatest increase in candidates was in Salmo, where in 2011 the mayor and council were elected by acclamation. This time there are three candidates for mayor and 12 for council, representing a net gain of 10 candidates. The quietest race this time was in New Denver, where the entire council
was elected unopposed, representing a decrease of three candidates from 2011. Midway experienced a similar drop, although it will still have a vote for council. On the regional district side, 17 candidates are running in Central Kootenay compared to 21 in 2011, and nine in Kootenay Boundary, versus 11 three years ago. The number of school trustee candidates was virtually unchanged in three of four districts. The exception is Kootenay Lake, where there are five fewer this time.

A Canadian folk-rock and country music legend is coming to Trail, and tickets are nearly sold-out. Gordon Lightfoot will be gracing the stage at the Charles Bailey Theatre on the night of Oct. 31 as part of the fall leg of his 2014 coast-to-coast tour. Nadine Tremblay, marketing and programming with the theatre, says if you want to see the Early Mornin’ Rain crooner, now would be a good time to get tickets because they are probably going to sell out soon. “Tickets are selling steadily,” she said. “(There is) only one $60 seat left. a bunch of tickets at $91.50 or $112.50 left and probably one-third of the VIP seats left at $145 each. (The VIP tickets) are complete with a dessert reception and a chance to get to meet Mr. Lightfoot. It will be a nice full audience for Gordon and I’m sure it will sell out so I urge people to not wait to get their tickets.” The 15-time Juno award winning folk singer has released over 20 albums since 1966 and plays almost 80 shows a year. Trail is the sixth stop for Lightfoot on this round of performances. It isn’t often the Charles Bailey Theatre books such a high-profile performer, and Tremblay says the Lightfoot show is going to do great things for the theatre. “This show definitely brings in a demographic that we don’t always see and it is a unique opportunity to expose the theatre to new patrons letting them know we are here and what we do,” she said. “Often at these kinds of shows, people are coming from farther reaching areas and sometimes they are coming to the Charles Bailey for the first time ever, which is really exciting for us. (The theatre) is trying hard to get more people to the theatre and this just makes our job a little

easier.” Tremblay says that having Lightfoot in Trail is going to be a great treat for concertgoers who would normally have to drive a few hours to see a show like this. “When residents don’t have to travel to Spokane or Vancouver to see acts of this stature and promoters can sell out a venue in our town, that is a win-win situation for everyone,” she said, adding that theatre staff and supporters are really looking forward to hosting Lightfoot, his band and crew. “We are ecstatic. We are all about making memorable experiences for patrons. It is such an honour to even just be in that space with one of Canada’s greatest songwriters. The theatre is so intimate, I think of it as having Gordon Lightfoot in your living room with 720 of your friends.” Tickets for the show are currently on sale at the Charles Bailey Theatre box office, open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. nay/Boundary place names Gold! The word alone makes a prospector salivate. Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, the Lardeau had two places with golden names. Goldfields, a mile above Camborne, was first mentioned in the Lardeau Eagle of October 24, 1901: “Now comes G.F. Goldsmith with a rival for Camborne. The new townsite is Goldfields … Mr. Goldsmith recently purchased from Roger E. Perry an interest in the townsite and with Mr. Perry will proceed to slash timber and lay out streets, survey and plot the ground at once. Messrs. Goldsmith and Perry have the making of a splendid townsite at Goldfields, adjoining as it does the famous
graphs that the town owned by “the most fastidious prospector in the Lardeau … was a failure, as nearby Camborne had already established itself as the saloon center for the Fish Creek camp.” He is remembered, however, in Mount Goldsmith, adjacent to Goldfields. Slightly more successfully was Gold Hill, near Poplar. Also spelled Goldhill, it was originally known as Second Crossing, for it was the second place the railway crossed the Lardeau River. Here Edward Mobbs of Gerrard envisioned a metropolis to serve the gold rush of 1903-04, to which he gave an unusual name. The Ledge of September 3, 1903 reported: “E. Mobbs has a townsite called Uto, at the Second Cross-

ing near Poplar. Near it some Swedes have a property which they value at $50,000. The location for a town in the fine gold belt is very desirable and Uto should soon be a hummer.” There is still an Uto Glacier and Peak in the Sir Donald range of Glacier National park, which according to Canadian Mountain Place Names mountaineer Charles E. Fay named for the section of the Swiss Alpine Club that fellow climbers Carl Sulzer and Emil Huber belonged to. The pair reached the top of Uto Peak in 1890. However, the townsite was renamed by October 1903, when the Mining Record stated: “Second Crossing is about three miles south of Poplar, and here the townsite boomer is trying to ‘get in his work,’ for already the
new townsite named Goldhill is being advertised …” W.D. Mackay surveyed the Gold Hill townsite on December 4, 1903 and deposited it with the land registry on May 19, 1904. A post office operated from July 1904 to May 1906. When the boom died down, so did the town, although the name is still in limited use. When the CPR arrived near presentday Revelstoke in 1885, it squabbled with surveyor Arthur Farwell, who laid out a townsite there and named it after himself, anticipating the railway would cut through his land. The company built a small, temporary station there known both as Second Crossing and Gold Hill before platting its own townsite to the east, which became Revelstoke.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS
PETS on PARADE HALLOWEEN CAN BE FUN FOR YOU, BUT SCARY FOR PETS Halloween can be fun for you, but scary for pets and farm animals. Fireworks, ringing doorbells and strangers hidden by costumes can SPOOK animals and cause them to PANIC, RUN AWAY or even DART into traffic. Frightened farm animals can run into barbed wire fences or other obstructions. Here are some tips to help you and your animal family have a healthy and safe Halloween! 1-Keep Pets inside: Keeps dogs and cats inside a quiet area of the house where they won’t be disturbed by trickor-treaters and can’t escape out of doors or windows. Play some music to drown out loud sounds for pets scared by loud noises, like fireworks 2-Don’t dress up your pets: Costumes are fun for people, but dressing up your pet is not a good idea. Animals, especially dogs, use body language to communicate. When tails, ears of furs is covered, dogs
cannot read each other’s body language, which can lead to confusion, fear and aggressive behaviour. 3. Don’t feed candy or chocolate to pets: It may be a treat for you, but candy can cause stomach upset and lead to health problems for pets. Chocolate is especially dangerous because it contains theobromine, which is toxic to cats and dogs but fine to people. Keep all candy where pets can’t reach it. Don’t panic if your pet accidently eats a small amount. Observe your pet, and if signs of illness show up, call your family vet or take your pet to a vet clinic. 4. Make sure your dogs and cats have ID: Now is a good time to make sure your pet has identification- a tag and a tattoo or microchip- in case your pet gets lost. Even indoor cats need identification- in case they bolt out the door from fright. If your pet does get away and become lost, the BCSPCA website has a fact sheet of suggestions that can help you find your pet: spca/bc/ca/AnimalIssues/lostpet.asp All of the staff of the Trail Regional BCSPCA wishes you and your animal family a safe and Happy Halloween!

I followed closely like an eager salesman, telling him about the car’s finer standard features, its fuel economy (8.7/5.4 L/100kms city/highway), its ability to hit 100 klicks in 7.5 seconds. Maybe that last fact was a bit insensitive, given the nature of the beast before me. He remained silent throughout. ‘What is a donkey doing among all of these horses,’ I thought aloud. He turned, gave me a withering look before shambling away and replied: “Technically, they are ponies – short horses – and having a short ass like me around makes them feel superior.” Smart ass. Classic American cars, while full of style and presence, weren’t known for their ability to stretch miles out of a gallon of fuel. These are five of are exceptions to the rule, all capable of at least 20 miles per gallon, which was good back in the day. 1976 Plymouth “Feather” Duster: The Feather Duster was an interesting and little-known response to the 1970s fuel crisis. Unlike today’s diesel and hybrid options, it carried just a small premium over the normal Duster, a $50 “economy” option that substituted aluminum for steel in several areas that brought the weight down to about 2,700 lbs. The Feather Duster was capable of up to 36 mpg. Average price for a gallon of gas in 1976: $0.57. 1950 Crosley Hotshot: The tiny Crosley Hotshot was America’s first post-war sports car. More like an MG Midget than a Corvette, the hotshot had a tiny 44 cubic-inch four-cylinder engine. And while no speed demon, the little roadster was capably of an astonishing 48 mpg. Average price for a gallon of gas in 1950: $0.27. 1961 Corvair Monza: The air-cooled

Corvair is best known as the target of Ralph Nader’s scorn over its unique rear suspension design. Lost in that controversy is the fact that Corvairs were damned fun to drive and quite economical. Car Life magazine got 24 mpg out of their four-door automatic test car in April 1961.Average price for a gallon of gas in 1961: $0.31. 1967 Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass Cruiser: It was exceedingly rare for a full-size Oldsmobile to approach 20 mpg, particularly one with a massive 400 cubic inch V-8, but the F-85 Cutlass Cruiser of 1967, with its carefully engineered GM TurboHydramatic transmission and a tall rear axle ratio, was capable of 20

Cute ute continues charm assault on Canadianstem By Zack Spencer
It’s hard to remember a time when we didn’t have the RAV4 in Canada. Toyota helped develop the “cute-ute” vehicles from Japan, along with the Honda CR-V. We had never seen anything like these vehicles before but they went on to forever change the marketplace and the way a family gets around. Today the compact SUV market has become so popular it will soon exceed the compact car in terms of overall sales, which has been, for decades, the cornerstone of the Canadian marketplace. The Toyota RAV4 continues to be a sales market leader and for good reason. Many buyers put their money into what I call “The Bank of Toyota” and know they will get a good return in terms of reliability, practicality and resale value. Looks In terms of design, Toyota wanted to make this latest RAV4 more of an emotional purchase and not just a rational choice. The design has been sharpened with
more flow from the front bumper and headlamps into a swept windshield and added character lines. Gone is the old swing-out tailgate, replaced by a proper lift gate, which is now framed with protruding tail lamps that look unique but also help with aerodynamics. One area that could use an update are the cheap looking hubcaps. These come standard on the $24,005 base front wheel drive (FWD) LE trim level and $26,270 AWD model. To get proper looking alloy wheels the buyer needs to spend $28,340 for the XLE FWD or $30,540 for the XLE AWD. In the mid-sized sedan market many cars, like the Honda Accord, costing the same amount as the base RAV4 come with nice looking alloy wheels as standard equipment. Inside The interior is a study in how to maximize space for a family but some of the small details could use refinement. The dash face is now covered with soft materials and looks
much better thanks to the French stitching but this same panel also obscures the switches hidden below. The seat-heating buttons, the Eco and Sport settings for the transmission are all switches the driver access frequently but they are not as easy to see, as they should be. Other than the dash there is still a large percentage of the interior covered in hard plastic. The up side is a well laid out interior configuration. The doors open to a wide angle and expose a big back seat with a flat floor, for easy access. The front seats are comfortable and now the driver’s seat has a manual height adjustment. Standard features include tilt and telescopic steering, Bluetooth connectivity, USB connection and air conditioning. The LE $1,500 upgrade package is worthwhile because it includes the very important heated front seats, larger 6.1-inch display audio with backup camera and upgraded speakers. This brings the price up to $27,835. Drive

My time with the RAV4 LE confirmed that Toyota knows how to make a thoroughly practical and easy to use vehicle that pleases all passengers.
Zack Spencer

Honda recently unveiled the new 2015 CR-V that utilizes direct injection engine technology and a slick, new continuously variable transmission. Not the case with the Toyota RAV4, it uses the same 176hp 2.5L 4-cylinder found in the last model and is matched to a 6-speed automatic. Launching from a traffic light is brisk and the noise inside the cabin is fairly low. The steering is easy to maneuver but some might find the feedback to
be too vague. Adjustable engine and transmission settings help the RAV4 to either use less fuel or perform better. The Eco button changes the settings of the car to improve fuel economy plus there is a small Eco light that reminds the driver when the car is being driven most efficiently. The Sport buttons holds the transmission a little longer between shifts for more responsiveness. Fuel economy is rated at 10.5L/100km in the city and 8.2L on the highway, using the new more stringent 2015 fuel economy test. The RAV4 was a solid leader on the
fuel economy front but the new Honda CR-V now claims that crown. Verdict Toyota is often criticized for not being bold enough in some of the choices it makes. Honda now has up-to-date technology in the new CR-V but Toyota is sticking with what works. This approach might be viewed as a step behind but other might look at it as tried-and-true technology that is reliable and still delivers solid fuel ratings. Toyota RAV4 was a pioneer in the small SUV space and continues to be a market leader but now the market
is so crowded with entries I suspect it will need to get new engine technology when it is totally refreshed in a few years. My time with the RAV4 LE confirmed that Toyota knows how to make a thoroughly practical and easy to use vehicle that pleases all passengers. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca The Lowdown Power: 2.5L 4-cylinder with 176hp Economy: 10.5L/8.2L/100km (city/ highway) Sticker price: $24,005$33,350

Burlington, VT.- Three seems to be a number that tends to rub people the wrong way. Expressions like “Three’s a crowd,” or “bad things come in threes,” or someone being described as the “third wheel” don’t leave a favourable impression in people’s minds. On the flip side, there’s “third time’s a charm,” implying that the third time is the best time. Third is also a podium finish! For Mercedes-Benz, three is a magical number. Thanks to the introduction of their all-new GLA – the third installment into their compact vehicle segment – the triangle is complete. And yes, good things do come in threes. Here’s why. Of the three vehicles available in North America that are built on the same platform – the B-Class, CLA and now GLA – the GLA gives owners the ability to go on and off-road. Okay, let me qualify that. Though it does come with Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR)- an off-road specific feature - it’s not meant for brutish off-roading. However, it is competent on cottage country roads or if you need to traverse into areas you couldn’t get into with a B Class or CLA. Whether you’re opting for the GLA 250 or the GLA 45 AMG, both trims come standard with Mercedes-Benz’s fully variable 4MATIC allwheel drive. You can shop for groceries around town in it but a trip up to a local ski hill will certainly not stress out the vehicle. Rest assured. The GLA also marks it as the first compact premium sports utility vehicle from the German automaker. Despite its compact designation, four adults could fit comfortably inside. Five might be a stretch but it’s certainly possible. Along with the warm bodies inside, it has a cargo capacity of 421 L. That increases to an impressive 1,235L with seats folded.
What’s even more impressive is the sound that comes from the AMG sports exhaust system. A system with two chrome-plated tailpipe trim elements featuring a twin- pipe design. It’s hard to imagine that’s the burble

and brawn of a 2.0L, fourcylinder engine. That’s right, the 355 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque are created from the most powerful series production four-cylinder passenger car engine in the world. Needless to say, the engine’s pairing with the 7GDCT 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission is as delicious as Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream; ice cream that just so happens to be made in the lovely state of Vermont. And a location that was fortuitously placed on our drive route. The dynamics of the GLA were also as vibrant as the hues of the autumnal foliage that decorated the surrounding towns of Burlington. In the lesser-powered GLA 250 – which has a 2.0L, I4 turbocharged engine with 208 horsepower and 258 lbft of torque – you still have a lot of ponies to play with. In fact, of the two engines available, this would be my choice. It has pep but also a smooth demeanor. If these engine choices look familiar to you, they are. They too can be found in the B-Class and CLA. continued on page A11

The third time is a charm because of the compact luxury vehicles made by MB, this is my favourite. I think it has a lot to do with the styling. It has an eye-catching design, especially if you’re looking at the GLA250 with the sport package, which gives you a sport brake system with perforated front rotors and MB logos on calipers, AMG body styling with inserts in front splitter, side sill panels and rear bumper in matte titanium grey, 19inch AMG Bicolour 5-Spoke
wheels with all-season tires and more. Inside, the cabin is draped in ARTICO leather upholstery; a synthetic alternative to cowhide. Then there’s a 5.8-inch full colour TFT display atop the centre stack; it increases to 7-inches if you opt for the navigation system. The fit and finish is fantastic and the overall ambiance of the cabin is cozy but not cramped. For the undulating roads, mixed with switchbacks and straight stretches, you have the help of electromechanical power steering to
weave you in and out of the Vermontonian roads. And if things get a little monotonous on the highway, pop the GLA 45 AMG into sport mode, give it (a little) throttle and enjoy the sweet sound of driving pleasure. Nissan Leaf is no glorified golf cart By Bob McHugh
The Nissan Leaf relies solely on electric power for propulsion and was the first mass production EV (electric vehicle) sold in North America. No glorified golf cart here, the Leaf can seat up to five adults and has more than enough power to be driven a highway speeds ... just like a normal car. When Leaf was released as a 2011 model year vehicle Nissan already had pre-sale orders for its entire first-year production run of 20,000 units. Based on a stretched version of Nissan’s B-platform, Leaf uses a low-slung Lithium-Ion battery pack to store its electrical energy and it’s located near the centre of the vehicle, un-
der the floor. In addition to ample rear cargo space, the battery position also helps make the Leaf more stable and more nimble than other EV’s. It’s a unique air cooled flat design of battery pack with four cells and 48 laminated modules. It weighs about 250 kg (600 lbs.) and came with an eight-year/160,000 km warranty. An 80kW AC synchronous electric motor drives the Leaf’s front wheels. It can generate 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Leaf has a rated driving range of 160 kilometres on a single charge, but it’s capable of going longer distances if the conditions are right and the driver conserves power. The battery pack can be charged up to 80
per cent of its full capacity within 30 minutes when connected to a dedicated (level 3) DC fast charger. A level two (typical home unit) charger hooked up to a 240V outlet can do a full charge in less than eight hours. The portable (level 1) charger can be used to top-up power and connects to any (110-volt) electrical outlet. The charger port is hidden behind a small door up front. The ultra quiet Leaf has a speaker near the front of the vehicle that makes a humming sound, at low vehicle speeds, to alert pedestrians to its presence. Like all electric motors, full power is available immediately. continued from page A14

All-Wheel Drive & Vehicle Stability Control. Always sticky! When the 2014 Sorento was named Canada’s Best New SUV, it gave us a unique problem: they quickly sold out. Enter the new 2015 Sorento, an early release built on Kia’s winning ways. With a choice of two engines – a thrifty 4 cylinder and an increasingly rare but potent V6, a backup warning system, and sensors that detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot – the new Sorento is all that and more. Best of all, it’s still priced like a 2014. Check out the future today and save like yesterday.

Nissan Leaf is no glorified golf cart continued from page A14
The (regenerative) brake pedal feel is a little different and the lack of telescopic steering column may put-off some buyers. The 2012 Nissan Leaf was essentially unchanged, however, the 2013 model year brought a bunch of technology upgrades and a new lower-priced base S trim level. An upgraded 6.6KW onboard charger is capable of reducing level 2 charge
time (with 30-amp service) to under four hours. This Leaf also comes with an improved energy management and regenerative braking systems, a more efficient heater and improved aerodynamics. Although the Leaf has consistently received a ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2013 edition got a ‘poor’ rating in a new (and tougher to pass) small overlap frontal crash test. This test is designed to rep-

licate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or a fixed object like a tree or utility pole, at 64 km/hour (40 mph). While saving money on fuel is great, most Leaf owners are more concerned about the environment and our dependency on oil. So far, general reliability appears to be very good and EV maintenance costs are typically lower than a gas engine vehicle. Limited availability on the
used car market is not too surprisingly, as most owners are hanging on to their Nissan Leaf. Price Check: 2011 - 2013 Nissan Leaf (October 2014) Year Edition Expect to Pay Today 2011 SL $19,000 to $23,000 2012 SL $22,000 to $26,000 2013 SL $25,000 to $29,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition,
mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2011 to 2014 Nissan Leaf: 2013/2014: The front passenger seat occupant classification system software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty and deactivate the passenger side airbag. Dealers will reprogram the occupant clas-
sification system. 2014: The front member assembly may not have been welded to specification and it may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 - Occupant Protection and CMVSS 305 Electrolyte Spillage and Electrical Shock Protection. Dealers will inspect vehicles for improper welding. Vehicles found to have been improperly welded will be replaced. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Checklist: Preparing your vehicle for winter Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now. · Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are underinflated, you lose fuel efficiency, so monitor and maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.

She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

DON’T WAIT!
· Schedule an oil change at the beginning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts and, if coupled with low coolant levels, can make it difficult for the engine to turn over. · Keep jumper cables, a battery booster pack and warning cones in your vehicle. These can come to the rescue if your battery dies and

Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe.
