New laws crack down on distracted drivers AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter
Eyes on the road. New laws are cracking down on any use of an electronic device while driving. The province’s new distracted driving fines were official as of Monday and include three penalty points and a $167 fine for anyone caught using a handheld device.
The new penalty covers infractions such as “talking on, holding or dialing a cellular phone, operating a hand-held audio player (such as an iPod or mp3 player), or programming a GPS,” the release states. “If it’s in your hand you’re going to get dinged,” Cpt. Kurt Banse with Quesnel Traffic Services said. Penalty points remain on a person’s driving record

for five years and can result in further sanctions, including prohibitions from driving. The province also highlighted the fact the new distracted driving legislation also prohibits drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program from using any hands-free device. With lighting and weather conditions worsening with the season, the province and ICBC say drivers
should be “be aware that distraction is a top contributing factor for drivers in vehicle collisions that involved pedestrians.” “Distracted driving has now surpassed impaired driving for fatalities on B.C. roads,” Banse said. “It’s a prevalent problem. We have zero tolerance.” Distracted driving is the second leading contributing factor of vehicle fatalities in B.C. The province says it will continue to
look at increased fines for distracted driving. Key Facts: • Drivers that accrue more than three points must pay an ICBC driver penalty point premium that starts at $175 and will escalate if they receive more points. • A driver who receives two distracted driving tickets in a year would pay $634, which is the cost of two fines and a $300 penalty for six points.
Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber M. Rose! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.
• As points build on a person’s driving record, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles may also identify a driver as high-risk and monitor or prohibit them under the Driver Improvement Program. • High-risk drivers can receive administrative interventions ranging from warning letters, which say their driving record is being monitored, to prohibitions from driving.

B.C. legislature to get security scanner TOM FLETCHER Black Press
Extra security is in place at the B.C. legislature, part of the response to shootings at Parliament Hill in Ottawa Wednesday morning. Premier Christy Clark told reporters Wednesday there was a review of legislature security after an attempted plot to place homemade bombs on the legislature grounds before Canada Day in July 2013. That resulted in tighter security measures that will be reviewed again after the Ottawa shootings, Clark said. B.C. Liberal house leader Mike de Jong said legislature security staff have recommended installation of a security scanner for visitors and he and NDP house leader Mike Farnworth have endorsed the plan. In the legislature, Clark called for the tradition of open democracy to be maintained.
“Out of these tragedies today, we must all remember, first, to be grateful for those who work for us every day to keep us safe; second, to be grateful for the institutions we have built that have made Canada a model of democracy around the world; third, to move forward into the future and continue to make the decisions that Canada needs — unafraid to do what we need to do to stand up for this country, to ensure that citizens in Canada continue to
have access to their public institutions, and unafraid to defend democracy and the institutions that have defined Canada for generations,” Clark said. NDP leader John Horgan echoed that sentiment. “As important as security measures will be over the next number of hours and days and weeks, not just here and in Ottawa but in every legislature in this country, we have to always keep in the forefront of our mind, in the forefront of
the decisions that we make around security, this institution belongs to the people of British Columbia — not to the 85 of us, but to everyone who lives in this province,” Horgan said. “They need to have access to those institutions if we’re going to continue to be defiant in the face of the insanity that happened today in Ottawa.” Visitors to the legislature were restricted to scheduled tours, and only previously invited guests were allowed in the public

gallery for Wednesday’s Question Period. Extra guards were stationed at all entrances. The legislature was closed to unscheduled visitors for Wednesday’s sitting, said Craig James, clerk of the B.C. legislature. He said security staff received a heightened risk alert this week, and a small number of MLAs were made aware of it. But there was no specific threat against the B.C. legislature.

A provincial court judge in Kamloops has admonished a Quesnel man whose rampage included spitting on a police officer, which required the Mountie to take an anti-viral cocktail. “I’m sure if someone asked you if you’d rather be punched in the face or spat on – I’m included in this – you’d rather be spat on,” Judge David St. Pierre told Brandon O’Flynn. O’Flynn pleaded guilty on Oct. 20 to assault of a peace officer, two counts of mischief and three counts of breaches of court orders stemming from an incident in Kamloops on July 19. Kamloops RCMP responded to a call about a woman in North Kamloops near the North Thompson River who was drunk and disorderly. They found her passed out on a driveway on Chestnut Avenue. A man was seen running from the scene. Following a foot chase, O’Flynn – who was under a no-contact order with the woman – was arrested. At the squad car, he spat in the face of one of the arresting officers. Crown prosecutor Adrienne Murphy called it a “very serious assault” that required the officer to undergo an anti-viral drug regimen to ensure his safety. Once in police cells, O’Flynn repeatedly smashed the electronic-monitoring device around his ankle. When he was offered a phone at the detachment to call his lawyer, O’Flynn pulled the unit from the wall. “He acknowledges he shouldn’t have been there and shouldn’t have been drinking,” articling student Jeremy Knight, who represented O’Flynn said. St. Pierre sided with the defence submission of 28 days jail, or time already served. O’Flynn will also serve one-year probation and pay $700 in victim-fine surcharges. He was arrested in Quesnel earlier this month following a breach of his recognizance and had been jailed since. Knight said O’Flynn has pleaded not guilty and a trial is set in January on a charge that he assaulted his girlfriend at a camping area outside Kamloops earlier this summer. He is on bail on that charge.

Quesnel Chamber: The voice of business As the voice of business in Quesnel, the main priority of the Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce is to ensure that business interests are being represented at all levels of government. Our Chamber network is unique; no other business organization benefits from a grassroots base of action in every regional, provincial or federal riding. We undertake research on a variety of policy issues, and present solutions from a business perspective.
Brisco seeking re-election It’s election time again and I am once more asking you to re-elect me as your city councillor. I have enjoyed the first term in many respects in spite of the sharp learning curve and the humble realization that nothing in a normal life of managing businesses, caring for your family and getting enough exercise prepares one for municipal governance. This whole community has helped Lou and I raise our three daughters. Quesnel deserves my investment of time , work and due diligence to ensure a healthy, vibrant community for the future. In my first term I have served with Museum and Heritage as the liaison, chaired the Volunteer Citizen of the Year committee, chaired the West Fraser Park committee, served on the subregional recreation commission, served with the Shiroai Twinning Society, helped organize Canada Day celebrations and worked with the CRD directors serving on the joint planning commission. I’m not a fancy or charismatic man, but I’m steady, go to work to work and I keep a clear head. I’m passionate about fitness and encouraging others to get out and move. With good common sense, and working with the guidance of our excellent staff, mayor and council have been able to accomplish a remarkable array of projects with positive results. A person needs to keep the reason for doing this work in the forefront. As a councillor, you have one vote, no actual power as an individual. The only real power is working together as a team to affect change for the better. If you vote your conscience you are doing your job. If an elected official was inclined to financial shenanigans, our Director of Finance and her staff would stop it cold, so don’t worry, I have seen no evidence of improprieties or corruption. I need to take a minute to speak about how fortunate this community is to have such an incredible work force as our city staff. They work hard to keep Quesnel beautiful, clean and humming. I have lived several places in my life and have observed various attempts at a snow removal system and I have never seen a better, more precisely organized snow removal program in spite of last winter’s difficult challenges. Good on you folks. My first three year term on Council feels like unfinished business. I would like to be allowed to continue the endeavour and the journey of working for you for the next four years. Please re-elect me, John Brisco to Quesnel City Council.
The extensive influence of the Chamber network is able to bring about significant change in government policy. For example, in 2013 the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce successfully advocated for the adoption of a new 10-year Canadian passport term after business owners expressed that this would be more convenient than the previous five-year term. The Quesnel Chamber currently has several policies supported by the B.C.
Chamber. These include a policy written on government compensation agreements in regards to Crown land and tenure, as well as a recent policy addressing B.C.’s skilled labour shortage through secondary trades education This fall, the Chamber is going to be implementing a “12@12 Member Input Session”. This exclusive roundtable session will give members the opportunity to openly discuss the issues that are
currently affecting them as business owners with representatives from the Chamber. Information gathered during this session will be used by the Chamber to help guide policy development. For more details about how our advocacy work could benefit your business, please contact the Chamber office at 250-992-7262, or by e-mail at qchamber@ quesnelbc.com. Small Business Week is celebrated Oct. 19 – 25.

A message from the Chamber of Commerce manager
T
his year I was pleased to be offered the position of Manager for the Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce. While it is quite a departure from my background as a Veterinary Technologist, I gladly accepted the position as I felt it would provide me with an opportunity to be part of the community while expanding my business knowledge. My first month was spent learning the ropes of the day to day operations of the Chamber and my role within the organization. Each day presented new and unique challenges for me but I found a healthy support network in place with the Board of Directors, Visitor Centre Manager, Patty Morgan and other business support organisations in Quesnel. I was also lucky enough to be able to employ two summer students, Megan Parisotto and Sophia Stoldt, who were invaluable to me during the summer months. I was able to focus on learning about the Chamber, its members and its role in the community, the province and the country. In September, I attended the B.C. Chamber Executives Conference in New Westminster. Over the weekend I attended lectures and seminars on a broad range of topics including Chamber Management and Policy Development, as well as networking events with Chamber staff from all over the province. One thing was abundantly clear throughout the conference, the Chamber is both a small community and a far reaching organization. From Fort St. John to Tofino and experience from 11 days to over 20 years on the job, everyone was there to grow and learn to better themselves
and strengthen their position as leaders of their Chambers and their communities. After six months
in my position, I still face new and unique challenges daily but feel confident in my ability to problem
solve effectively and efficiently. With many projects on the go, the Chamber continues to be a strong presence
in the community. I look forward to working closely with Chamber members and business owners
in the community to further develop programs and services that promote and support business in
Quesnel. Amber Gregg is manager of the Chamber of Commerce.

What does harm reduction mean to you?
f you ask the average Canadian what harm reduction is, chances are, they
won’t be quite sure. Truth is, many of us know a lot about it already. Perhaps you’ve

helmets when going for a ride. And I’m sure we’ve all adhered to minimum legal drinking

Comparing harm reduction and health care costs
from A6 More specific to public health, harm reduction refers to policies, programs and projects that aim to reduce the health, social and economic harms associated with drug use. Most shelters in urban areas operate on a low barrier, harm reduction philosophy meaning that it is a service that is meant to be inclusive of populations who have been labeled treatment resistant or service resistant because of adverse interactions with health care services. Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms declares that “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” This charter is a tool to ensure that even the most treatment resistant person, still has the right to a form of healthcare that is open to them and allows them
further help to prospectively move into healthier social standing. The most prominent harm reduction programs in public health are tobacco reduction measures, needle exchanges and supervised injection sites. While tobacco reduction measures aim to reduce harms related to smoking tailored tobacco products, needle exchanges and injection sites work to reduce the transmission of infectious diseases in society in relation to illegal substance use. The latter always tends to be the harder subject to swallow. Harm reduction measures, to the untrained individual, seem enabling and antithetical to helping people overcome substance use challenges. Data collected by the Canadian AIDS Society showed that our rates of HIV have dropped from over 6,000 per year in Canada in the mid-eighties, to an estimated 3,070 new cases in 2009.
The 2011 study by the Canadian AIDS Society estimates the net present value of the economic loss attributed to those recently infected with HIV to be $4,031,500,000, or $1.3 million per person. Health care costs are estimated to be $250,000 of that overall loss. These numbers not only prove that programs have been effective over time in protecting individuals from transmission or HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C, another infectious disease related to the risks of needle sharing in user populations, but they show that these programs can deter the costs to society. A study conducted here in Quesnel, titled Illicit Drug Use in a Small Northern Rural B.C. Community surveyed approximately 200 people in the community, all of whom were using illicit drugs (other than, or in addition to, marijuana). Of those 200 people, 29 per cent (or 58 people) had injected
drugs at least once in the last 12 months. Of the people who injected drugs in the last year, 53 per cent had shared drug use paraphernalia with others. Access to harm reduction supplies and information is problematic in Quesnel and need to be improved in order to reduce harm and reduce health care costs in the community. Northern Health, Quesnel Tillicum Society, and Seasons House emergency shelter are among the few agencies in Quesnel who have implemented Harm Reduction Strategies into their mandates. All agencies with needle exchanges have reported an increase in needle exchange uptake meaning that overall, high risk individuals who use illicit drugs are seeking clean supplies and becoming aware of the risks they are exposed to. This is where harm reduction educates. It helps individuals make educated
choices. The most recent undertaking by Northern Health’s Public Health unit is to train opiate users to administer Naloxone in the event of overdose. These harm reduction strategies are all community solutions to a quagmire such as substance use in society. Seventeenth century writer Jonathan Swift said, “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others”. Harm reduction’s vision is healthier lives for all. Leah Martin is the new Housing First Program Coordinator at Seasons House in Quesnel.

LNG tax reflects softer gas market
TOM FLETCHER Black Press Liquefied natural gas(LNG) producers are being asked to pay a new tax of 3.5 per cent on their profits for the first 20 years of operation in B.C., after deducting their startup costs. Finance Minister Mike de Jong unveiled the LNG tax system Tuesday, describing it as lower in total taxes and royalties than existing and proposed LNG export facilities in Australia, Alaska, Oregon and other U.S. states that are B.C.’s main competitors. De Jong said B.C. scaled back its plan to charge up to seven per cent in the face of declining gas market conditions, including slower growth in China and its new long-term deal to buy pipeline gas from Russia. Japan is also considering restarting its nuclear power program after the 2011 Fukushima earthquake, and oil prices have declined in recent months. Under the B.C. plan, a single mediumsized LNG plant on the B.C. coast would pay about $800 million a year in total provincial taxes after a three-year construction period. That

includes the new LNG tax, royalties on gas produced in B.C., carbon tax, provincial sales tax and corporate income tax. “That’s more than we got from the whole forest sector this year,” de Jong said. There are currently 18 proposals for LNG plants in B.C., ranging from small to those twice the size of the finance ministry’s medium-plant example. One of the largest is LNG Canada, a consortium of Shell, PetroChina, Mitsubishi and Korea Gas to build a pipeline and

export terminal at Kitimat. LNG Canada issued a statement Tuesday saying it will continue to work on its B.C. plan. “There is much more work to do prior to a final investment decision for
LNG Canada and we will continue working with First Nations and local communities, as well as municipal, provincial and federal governments,” it said. De Jong said the B.C. Liberal election promise to pay off the
province’s debt with LNG revenues remains possible, but it will take longer than earlier estimates. A single medium-sized is worth $8 billion in revenues over a 10-year period of full operation. NDP natural gas critic Bruce Ralston said the government had to slash its tax plan after it hyped the LNG revenue windfall to voters in the 2013 election campaign. That put B.C. in a weaker negotiating position with international investors, Ralston said. The new tax takes effect in 2017, with an effective rate of 1.5 per cent for three years as companies construct LNG plants. Only one or two small facilities are expected to be ready by then. The rate rises to 3.5 per cent on net income after capital costs are deducted, and to five per cent effective 2037.

Consider Using Trust Company as Will Executor One of the most important decisions to make when preparing a will is choosing an estate trustee, commonly referred to as the “executor” of the estate. The role of executor can be very complex and involve responsibilities most people have never experienced. This might include creating a detailed inventory of the estate, taking custody of the assets, filing complex tax returns and administering and distributing the assets. Depending on the circumstances, it could require significant legal, accounting and administration expertise - as well as a major commitment of time, effort and resources. It can be particularly burdensome for large and complex estates. As a result, you might find that using a lawyer or a trust company as executor is preferable to the option of choosing a spouse, family member or close friend. There are some key advantages to consider when weighing the option of using a trust company instead of an individual: • Trust companies have vast experience in estate administration, with expertise in all the key areas required, such as the filing of tax returns, providing detailed financial accounting to beneficiaries, paying debts and taxes of the estate, and taking inventory of assets. • Rigorous regulatory supervision, minimum capital requirements and corporate insurance are all in place to ensure the safety of your assets. • Because a corporation has perpetual existence, you don’t have to worry about an individual dying before you, or becoming unable to act while your estate is being administered. • Choosing a trust company relieves the emotional burden of people close to the deceased having to make difficult and detailed decisions about the estate while they are still grieving. You can also create some flexible arrangements involving a trust company. For example, the company does not need to be your sole executor. Instead, you can have it act as a co-executor, together with any individual you name, such as a spouse. This can give you the professional expertise you need, while at the same time ensuring that someone with deep knowledge of the beneficiaries is also involved in an official capacity.

He was named a Paul Harris fellow, and a life member of Rotary. His favorite pastime was reading, golfing and senior curling. Bob is survived by his wife Joy, son Mark Vancouver, his sister Irene - New Jersey USA, his brother Ralph - Ontario and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Stals and the 3rd floor nursing staff at G.R. A grave side service will be held internment in the family plot, Forest Lawn, Burnaby. October 27th at 11am.
Ideally, the trust company will want to meet you and possibly some of your key beneficiaries before taking on the executor role. And once in that position, a representative of the company should be in touch from time to time to review your will and make you aware of important changes in applicable tax and administration rules. OPINIONS
Cut the crap
t’s disgusting, childish and a tarnish on our city and the people within in. After several election signs were damaged, RCMP are warning the public causing damage to property is mischief, which is a criminal offence and will be investigated accordingly. The RCMP is requesting that all incidents of this type be reported to the detachment at 250-9929211 and an officer will be assigned to investigate. Seems fair enough and definitely straightforward. And yet, for some reason every election time we have some mental-midgets running around town tearing signs from the ground. Most recently we had some fine citizen(s) defacing a sign of a mayoral candidate, spray painting a nasty word across its front. Seriously? Why in God’s green earth would anyone feel that was necessary or helpful to our democratic process? Each and every one of these candidates who put their name forward for School District 28 trustee, Cariboo Regional District director, City of Quesnel councillor or mayor is a person first and foremost. No one deserves to have their property destroyed merely because they have the courage to put their name forward for the betterment of our community. Don’t believe in their platforms and policies? Fair enough. You’ll have your say on election day. Anything else makes a mockery of the democratic process. Surely not something any supporter would want to advocate for, right? So cut the crap and grow the hell up. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

I believe organization is key
few months ago I bought a used truck and was given two
keys. One had remote control buttons for the locks, the other was a simple valet key. Since then, I have lost both. The first to go missing was the fancier one. I now refer to it as “Pesky.” I lost it right after I’d had my truck towed to the repair shop. I’d only owned the vehicle a little over a month when one morning it wouldn’t start. Actually, it would start, but it kept shutting itself off after a couple of seconds. It continued to do that until the nice BCAA guy showed up. For some reason he had no problem keeping it going long enough to drive it right up the ramps of his tow truck. It never dawned on me until he was driving away that I might have discovered the solution myself with a bit more time. “When the driver arrived I remembered I had a valet key so I gave him that,” I
Lori Welbourne
On A Brighter Note told my trusted mechanic, Howie. “Is it possible it wouldn’t work for me because I was using my remote control key and had dropped it earlier?” To my surprise, that was it exactly. Because the battery had come loose, I had put it, along with the casing and the little screws in a plastic bag, and without its bulky plastic shell, the naked key on its own no longer worked. Apparently it had a security feature that was shutting the engine off automatically. Such a feature didn’t seem logical to a klutz like me, but I was relieved not to have to pay a bill later on when I
picked up the truck. Instead, Howie just fixed my broken key. The following week I lost it. “How is that even possible?” my husband asked as I was dumping my purse upside down on the kitchen bar. “It’s on a big ring of keys.” “I take it off when I go for walks,” I shrugged. “No worries. It’ll turn up.” I didn’t panic because I knew I could use the reliable valet key until Pesky showed up. It didn’t occur to me that I would lose that one as well. Sure enough I misplaced it after briefly going into a large store. Retracing my steps throughout the building and parking lot I couldn’t find it anywhere. With less than an hour until my next appointment I did my best to remain calm and once again emptied my purse in an effort to find it. But dumping the bag upside down onto the hood of my truck turned up nothing. After a 55 minute search, an additional purse dump and a couple
check-ins with the cashiers, I wondered when I’d ever get back in my truck. I was mad at myself. I mean, really. Who has only one key to their vehicle? And then loses it? That seemed as stupid as a key designed to shut off the engine just because the tiny battery had fallen out of it. Frustration turned to glee when I finally found it in the parking lot under someone else’s car. I vowed to order a couple of back-ups, and the next day when I went for a walk I committed to putting the key back on its big ring immediately after I was finished. And I did. Grabbing it out of the pocket of my raincoat I ended up finding something else in there too: Pesky. I’m now back where I started with the original two keys I was given. Who thinks I should still order an extra? I sure as heck do. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com

Mount Polley incident shows system works Editor: Recent plankton samples taken from Quesnel Lake show that plankton levels are the same as plankton levels found in other similarly large, deep lakes in B.C. If the Mount Polley mine incident has somehow introduced toxins into the environment that

are harmful to life then someone forgot to tell the plankton which form the basis of aquatic food chains. People seem to forget that mines in B.C. are very different today than they were a century ago. Mining companies even have to post a sufficient reclamation bond to
ensure that a mine site is restored to natural conditions after mining is completed, without using taxpayer dollars. It’s been that way since 1969. In fact, B.C. was the first province in Canada to implement such a protocol and the first to extend such protection to mining exploration.

data coming out of the monitoring and remediation process, show
that our environmental protection and response systems work and that they are actively safeguarding our environment. This is a story that should be told and a message that the public really needs to hear. Bruce Sanderson North Vancouver

Rotary fundraiser set to support special needs people while exploring cuisine and culture

uesnel Rotary Club is once again hosting A Toast to South Africa with authentic South African cuisine, a silent and live auction as well as offering a safe ride home, Nov. 8 at the Seniors’ Centre. Tickets are $70 which includes a $20 donation to the Rotary Foundation with a tax receipt available for that portion of the ticket cost. Tickets for this third event are available at Investors Group in the Maple Park Mall. The annual fundraiser has two goals, one to raise funds for an international cause and secondly for a local cause. The first year was A Toast to India where funds were raised for a mobile library to service the slum areas in India as well as literacy programs in Quesnel. The second year was A Toast to South Africa where the funds raised went to support a seniors’ care facility in Onshuis in Mossel Bay to upgrade its security system and the local project was the purchase of garden furniture for Dunrovin Park Lodge. This year, again with A Toast to South Africa the international recipient of funds raised will be East Rand Protective Workshop, a greenhouse project which employs special needs adults and youth who then sell the seedlings to local market garden businesses and the public. Quesnel Rotary Club is still considering their options for the local donation, but it will possibly be something involving teens and youth. Funds raised at these events are partnered with Rotary District and Rotary International to boost the amount donated for the international project. For example, the first project, the traveling library in India saw the $6,000 raised in Quesnel parlayed
into $40,000 with Rotary District and International’s contribution. For this year’s menu, Dr. Andre Erlank, South African by birth and now Quesnel Rotary Club member, will once again take the lead on what dishes will be up for service. Various club members will do the cooking and one of those cooks, Sheila Pritchard said they also take a peek in South African cookbooks just to stay on track. But one area Dr. Erlank will not be handing over to anyone else is the barbecue which he personally takes on as his domain. “The cooking team is proficient with the menu with only a couple of items new from last year,” Pritchard said. She added although a decidedly South African favourite, Bobotie is on the menu this year for the first time. “We also source out authentic ingredients,” she said. On tap is South African beer and wine. The selections were juried by the committee members. Another committee member Laurey-Anne
Roodenburg said they had sent invitations to South Africans in neighbouring communities and of course our own local South African community. A special treat this year, Rotarian Bev Haluschak has organized a Rotarian choir to sing O Canada and the South African national anthem in Afrikaans which is no small feat. “The community has again been stellar in their donations,” Rotarian and committee member Liane Kimmie said. “We have amazing items to bid on in both the silent and live auctions.” For example, there’s an airfare package for two people to the value of $2,200 for any location in North America (including Mexico and the Caribbean) donated by James and Sons and Summit Electric. Edgewood Farms has donated a hand-crafted dining room table, a bench and two chairs valued at $500. Crosswaters donated a vintage cabinet filled with lotions and soaps valued at $400. For the little one in your life, Bo Peep Boutique has donated a size five child’s snow set valued at $300. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of great prizes on the auction block. Wayne Wark is the auctioneer and the Fembots Baseball Team is hostessing the event. The colour scheme is black and white with a zebra influence and the safe ride home is thanks to Sandra Lewis and AC&D Insurance. Throughout the evening a South African travel log and South African music will whisk‚ you to South Africa as part of the entertainment. “Tickets are only available until Oct. 30 so we can prepare the appropriate amount of food,” Kimmie said. Visa and Mastercard will be accepted on the night of the festivities.

Puppets help SPCA
The Weird Nickname Art group put together a fundraiser puppet show for the SPCA on Sept. 21 as well as several other fundraising activities including 11 silent auction items; four raffle baskets; 50/50 draw; 22 door prizes and a small concession. Although the attendance was small, the group had been busy selling raffle tickets prior to the event, so the event itself rasied $544.60 for the SPCA. A huge thank you to Larry Forman at the Elks Hall for all his help. We would like to thank all the sponsors for their generous donations. Winners of the raffle baskets: Guys Grab Bag – Karl Pfeifer Mom’s pamper package – Larry Forman Teen boy – Betty Sherstan Teen Girl – Kaitlyn Petrie Thank you very much to all the volunteers who came out to help with setting up, cleaning up, concession, ticket sales, puppet show and much, much more. We really couldn’t have done it without all of you. Thank You to everyone who bought tickets and came out to see the puppet show you helped make this a great success. Amanda Weiers and her art coach Ruza Cook took on the bulk of the work staging this event. Amanda was very excited to present the SPCA with the cheque on Sept. 23 when they reopened for the $544.60. She felt really good that she could help out with this cause.

Kangaroos triumph with back-to-back wins WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter The ‘Roos took to the road, bringing home their first victories of the season and four points back to Quesnel. The team first faced the Kitmat Ice Demons, Oct. 18. “It was a close game all the way through,” coach Win Winofsky said. “But in the end we were the better team.”
The Ice Demons and the ‘Roos were well matched, it was a struggle for either team to gain the upper hand. The ‘Roos took the lead in the first period with Justin Fulton scoring the first goal of the night unassisted, the Demons quickly followed bring the first period to a close with a score of 1-1. “It was a close game all the way through, but in the end we were the better team.” Coach Win Winofsky
the ‘Roos matched each goal. Matt Powell assisted by Mitch Galbraith scored the ‘Roos second goal of the night, with the third goal going assisted to Coltin DeFrais. Nearing the end of the
second period the teams were matched three for three when the ‘Roos skated to take a one point lead with Alessio Tomassetti netting the puck, assisted by De Fraise. As the buzzer called the players back onto the ice for the third and final period the Ice Demons fought to catch up to the ‘Roos, scoring on ‘Roos Ryan Manderson and tying the score 4-4.
It wasn’t until 15 minutes into the final period that Alessio Tomassetti, assisted by Ryan Skinner, launched the Quesnel boys back in the lead and, try as the might, the Ice Demons could not get by Manderson. The Ice Demons skated away in defeat as the ‘Roos rang in their first victory of the season with a final score of 5-4. The following night,
Oct. 19, pitted the ‘Roos against the Prince Rupert Rampage. Still buzzing from the excitement of their first win, the Quesnel team provided a tough challenge for the Rampage. De Fraise, assisted by Fulton and Alessio Tomassetti, scored the first goal of the night leaving the Rampage skating after the trio in defeat. See PAGE A20

From A19 Soon after Tyrell Turgeon flew by his opponents to score the second goal of the night for the ‘Roos. The Rampage fought back, but despite their efforts the Prince Rupert players could not catch up to the ‘Roos before the buzzer sounded. The ‘Roos skated into the second period with a one point lead. The teams were well matched in this period, neither team able to score on the other. As the final period began the Rampage scored their second goal of the night off a power play, bringing the score to a tie. But this small victory was short-lived with the ‘Roos quickly taking back the upper hand. Tomassetti, assisted by Fulton and Harley Gilks, scored the final goal of the night. The buzzer sounded bringing game night to a close, sending the Rampage back to practice as the ’Roos brought in their second win of the weekend with a final
score of 5-2. Despite having left Quesnel shorthanded the Kangaroos proved they are a force to be reckoned with. Come cheer on the Kangaroos as they take on the Lac La Hache Tomahawks on home ice, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.

Quesnel local Logan Godsoe (front) attended SwimBC’s Paraswimming Camp, Oct 17 – 19.
Riding the waves in Richmond WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter
Waverider Logan Godsoe started the season off with a splash, participating in SwimBC’s Paraswimming Camp. The camp was hosted in Richmond, Oct. 17 – 19. Born with an underdeveloped arm but a passion for swimming, Godsoe is willing to take on any challenge. Having already attended this camp previously, Godsoe was thrilled to get another opportunity to improve his skills and meet with the other camp-goers once again. “It was really fun, I got to see all my friends again,” Godsoe said. “There was only one new person this year.” Godsoe travelled to Richmond
with his parents and Waverider coach Jerrit Brink. He really showed his love for the sport at this camp Brink remarked. Unlike the previous year, which focused on a balance of land and in-water training, this years program kept the participants in the water. “There were time trials at the end,” Godsoe explained. “We did some nice endurance on the second and the first day we got there we just had a nice little swim for an hour for everyone to meet and say hi.” It was a thrilling weekend for this Waverider, only seconds away from swimming in with a AAA time in the 200 individual medley. Godsoe already holds AAA standings in the 50 freestyle and 400 freestyle.

and expose a big back seat with a flat floor, for easy access. The front seats are comfortable and now the driver’s seat has a manual height adjustment. Standard features include tilt and telescopic steering, Bluetooth connectivity, USB connection and air conditioning. The LE $1,500 upgrade package is worthwhile because it includes the very important heated front seats, larger 6.1-inch display audio with backup camera and upgraded speakers. This brings the price up to $27,835. Drive Honda recently unveiled the new 2015 CR-V that utilizes direct injection engine technology and a slick, new continuously variable transmission. Not the case with the Toyota RAV4, it uses the same 176hp 2.5L 4-cylinder found in the last model and is matched to a 6-speed automatic. Launching from a traffic light is brisk and the noise inside the cabin is fairly low. The steering is easy to maneuver but some might find the feedback to be too vague. Adjustable engine and transmission settings help the RAV4 to either use less fuel or perform better. The Eco button changes the settings of the car to improve fuel economy plus there is a small Eco light that reminds the driver when the car is being driven most efficiently. The Sport buttons holds the transmission a little longer between
shifts for more responsiveness. Fuel economy is rated at 10.5L/100km in the city and 8.2L on the highway, using the new more stringent 2015 fuel economy test. The RAV4 was a solid leader on the fuel economy front but the new Honda CR-V now claims that crown. Verdict Toyota is often criticized for not being bold enough in some of the choices it makes. Honda now has up-to-date technology in the new CR-V but Toyota is sticking with what works. This approach might be viewed as a step behind but other might look at it as tried-and-true technology that is reliable and still delivers solid fuel ratings. Toyota RAV4 was a pioneer in the small SUV space and continues to be a market leader but now the market is so crowded with entries I suspect it will need to get new engine technology when it is totally refreshed in a few years. My time with the RAV4 LE confirmed that Toyota knows how to make a thoroughly practical and easy to use vehicle that pleases all passengers. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca
