Wilks’ instincts kicked in when gunfire erupted

EXTREME HUNTRESS
Dalke helps out with a rival’s hunt TRE VOR CR AWLEY
After bagging her animal, Nikita Dalke partnered up with a fellow competitor for another hunt as part of the third Extreme Huntress episode released this past weekend. In the second episode, Dalke had harvested a Black Hawaiian sheep, and now it was time for her to be the spotter for a fellow Extreme Huntress challenger within the 777 Ranch in Texas. Dalke was also subjected to anti-hunter abuse, and had to respond in a simulated con-
frontation with a show judge. The intention of subjecting contestants to anti-hunting abuse is to see how they react and respond, according to Dalke. “Went I went into that room, they didn’t tell you what was going on,” she said. “So it was kind of a shock. They sat you down and said, ‘We’re just going to read you things that an anti-hunter would say and we want you to respond.’ “I didn’t expect them to go that intense, so it kind of shocked me.” Disclaimer: There is explic-
NIKITA DALKE it language during that segment of the episode. Hunting is common around
Cranbrook and Kimberley for obvious reasons, but Dalke has experienced those kind of conversations in the past. In her response on the episode, Dalke mentioned hunters are true conservationists who are ethical and responsible. “It’s not teaching them violence,” she said. “It’s teaching them sustenance, how to feed themselves, how to look after themselves. How to look after themselves when they’re out in the bush, how to survive.

MLA looking at river treaty improvements TRE VOR CR AWLEY
Kootenay-East MLA Bill Bennett had some tough words for an American audience in Spokane regarding the Columbia River Treaty on Wednesday. The B.C. Minister of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas was across the 49th parallel to talk about the 50-year old treaty, which is now eligible for unilateral termination from both sides, provided there is a 10-year notice. That is not the intention of either side, according to Bennett, but

B.C. Premier Clark apologizes for Tsilhqot’in hangings in 1864 Tom Fletcher Black Press

Chief Roger William, vice chair of the Tsilhqot’in National Government, and Chief Joe Alphonse, chair, speak to reporters after apology in the B.C. legislature Thursday.
The B.C. government has made a formal apology in the legislature to the Tsilhqot’in Nation for the arrest and hanging of six of its war chiefs at Quesnel in 1864. Tsilhqot’in tribal chair Chief Joe Alphonse
and vice-chair Chief Roger William visited the legislature Thursday to hear Premier Christy Clark make a formal statement on the historic events often referred to as the Chilcotin War or the Bute Inlet massacre. The Tsilhqot’in Nation’s historical position
that it was defending its sovereign territory was upheld in June by a Supreme Court of Canada decision recognizing aboriginal title based on continuous occupation and control of the Nemiah Valley near Williams Lake. In the summer of

1864, Tsilhqot’in members killed 14 construction workers employed by colonial official Alfred Waddington to build a road from Bute Inlet to provide faster access to the gold fields of the Cariboo region. Alphonse said later that Tsilhqot’in warriors traditionally fought to protect their land, women and children. “One of the things you don’t hear about very often, the final straw that led to that conflict was the abuse of our women by the roadbuilding crew,” he said. After the violence, Tsilhqot’in chiefs were invited to Quesnel for what they believed were peace talks, but were arrested and eventually hanged. Clark described in the legislature an offer by colonial gold commissioner William Cox to send the Tsilhqot’in chiefs a gift of tobacco and an invitation to discuss terms of peace, after settlers had been either killed or driven out of Tsilhqot’in territory. “Chief Klatsassin and his men accepted this truce,” Clark said. “They rode into the camp to negotiate peace, and then in an unexpected act of betrayal they were arrested, imprisoned and tried for murder. On Oct. 26 five chiefs were hanged: Head War Chief Klatsassin, Chief Biyil, Chief Tilaghed, Chief Taqed and Chief Chayses. Their bodies are all buried in the city of Quesnel. “The following summer Chief Ahan sought to pay reparations to compensate for any harm caused to innocents in the events of the Chilcotin War. He was also hanged. He was buried in New Westminister. “So, Madame Speaker, I stand here today in this legislature, 150 years later, to say that the province of British Columbia is profoundly sorry for the wrongful arrest, trial and hanging of the six chiefs, and for the many wrongs inflicted by past governments,” Clark said. Alphonse said the next step should be an admission by the federal government that the hanged chiefs did not commit any crime.

Wilks, MPs in lockdown for several hours CONTINUED from page 1
“After hearing the gunshots, my police instincts kicked in right away and the first thing I did was hit the ground and look to see what was going on. “About 30 seconds later, I made a decision that we needed to secure one of the doorways where the majority of the gunfire was coming from. So myself and a number of my colleagues just starting grabbing a whole bunch of chairs that we sit in and piling them against the door.” Wilks said the impetus behind piling chairs was not to stop the gunman, but to slow him down should he try to enter. The door was the only thing that separated them from the hallway where the shooter was. “After that myself and a number of my other colleagues who were former policemen more or less tried and were successful in calming everyone down and making sure that we were quiet,” he said. They then waited for security, which arrived shortly after. “Then we were in lockdown and waited until security said that it was okay for us to leave,” Wilks said, adding that was several hours. Security, which included the House of Commons security, Senate security, the RCMP and the Ontario Provincial Police, would periodically stop by to provide updates once the scene was secured. Then they arranged transportation for the
MPs and their staff. One of the problems Wilks noted was with the door closed, you could hear gunfire, but there’s no way to tell who is shooting. “My assumption is always, until told otherwise, it’s the bad guy, and you act accordingly,” Wilks said. On Thursday morning, Wilks said he had no apprehension about heading back into the House of Commons. “Today was much more normal, with the exception that no visitors were allowed into the House today,” he said. Part of the House of Commons was still a crime scene, so the only ones allowed in were members of parliament and their staff. “Other than that it started off at 10 o’clock and we continued with business at hand,” he said. “Security here was amazing,” he said. “Hats off to not only the House of Commons and Senate security, but also the OPP and RCMP. I was able to get to my office this morning and then get to Centre Block. There were RCMP there and we were ID’ed to make sure we were members of parliament.” Wilks said he hopes this doesn’t have an affect on Canada’s openness. “This is referred to as the People’s House. Since 1867 anyone could come in here. Although under normal circumstances they go through security.” He said certain as-

Graham Richardson of CTV News posted this shot of the Conservative caucus room shortly after Wednesday’s shooting at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. pects of security will likely be beefed up a bit. “Their job is to protect us. They do a very good job at it and they have my highest regard for that.” Wilks noted that things changed as a result of Wednesday’s events. “What I’ve always said is that it seems that there is a little bit of complacency on the part of not politicians,
but Canadians in general,” he said. “With regards to the fight is over there, as in Iraq, Syria, Iran and those areas in the Middle East, but it has moved here and the game changed. So we can’t say anymore that it can’t happen here, because it’s happened twice this week.” Wilks was referring to the hit-and-run attack that killed a soldier in Quebec on Monday.

Depippo’s road to the Paralympics underway B a r ry Co u lt e r
After a year of intense training a Cranbrook athlete’s ambition to make Canada’s Paralympic team for Brazil 2016 is making forward progress. Swimmer Jennifer Depippo will be competing in the Can-Am Para-Swimming Championships in Edmonton, Dec. 5-7. “The Can-Am Games are a step towards the Pan-Am Games,” Depippo said. The Para-Pan American Games, which will follow the Pan-American Games in Toronto of 2015, are the next step towards the Paralympics in Brazil. The Can-Am games feature athletes from Canada and the U.S. All swimmers who meet
published time standards in their classifications are eligible to compete. Depippo’s specialty is the 400-metre freestyle. The standard for her classification is seven minutes and 54 seconds (7:54). Depippo hammered the time in her qualification swim — seven minutes and 39 seconds. “And I’m just getting faster,” she said. “The other day I swam it in seven minutes and 30 seconds.” For the competition, every swimmer is ranked from one to 10, based on how their disability affects their stroke, and how it effects their movement through the water. Depippo herself sustained a brain injury as a child in a car accident. But
she has battled back from her disability to create a life, even writing a book about it — “An Unexpected Miracle: Conquering Brain Injury.” She has been training seriously in the pool for more than a year, starting in August, 2013. “I told my coach, no one can stop me,” she said. “Just try it — no one will.” In Edmonton, Depippo will be competing in the 400 metre freestyle, the 100 metre freestyle, “and I’d like to see what I can do with the 800 metre.” Competitors are guaranteed three races. “I can do up to seven races (in Edmonton),” she said. “I think right now I’ll do only three.” Depippo is training
with local swimming coach Dave Chisholm and personal trainer Olivia Besanger. Jennifer Depippo is looking for sponsorship to help defray the costs of travel, training and competition. “It would be nice to have the support of the community,” she said. “I’m the first Paralympian in the history of Cranbrook.” Depippo said everything is possible if one has the will. “I have the motivation and determination to prove to myself and to others that I can do it.” If you’re interested in sponsoring Depippo in her Can-Am, Parapan and Paralympic quest, contact her at depippo.jennifer@gmail. com.

The meeting was put together by Postnikoff, herself the mother of a veteran, to give vets an opportunity to get together to support and socialize, something lacking in Kimberley since the closure of the Legion branch. “The veterans in attendance commented that the evening of camaraderie was a “great success,” and are looking forward to the next get-together on November 4,” Postnikoff said. Bennett speaks stateside on Columbia River treaty Continued from page 1
“This was the first time, that on behalf of the B.C. government, that I actually said to an American audience what B.C.’s expectations are,” Bennet said, “should we decide together—our two countries—to make changes to the [Columbia River] treaty. “…This treaty is all about the equitable sharing of the impacts and the benefits and currently, it’s our view in B.C. that we don’t receive enough value for the multiple benefits that the US receives from the treaty.” Considering the American audience, Bennett said his comments were the first time that the B.C. government’s concerns were aired publicly. “It is a position that is very much contrary to a lot of comments that have been coming out of the US for the last six months to a year about B.C. already receiving too much from the treaty,” Bennett said. The province currently receives roughly $150 million in benefits from the treaty, but Bennett is hoping that provincial and federal offi-
The Libby Dam in Montana, south of Lake Koocanusa cials can engage with their American counterparts to address those concerns. Specifically, Bennett feels that the province isn’t receiving enough value for the benefits that the Americans receive as part of the treaty. He notes that the Columbia River allows for a barge transportation system that allows Washington, Oregon and Idaho to reap billions of dollars worth of goods from imports and exports. “Part of the reason they have a successful commercial river transportation industry is because of the management that we provide for water in Canada,” said Bennett. He also notes that

water management, on the Canadian side of the border, also provides irrigation benefits to their agriculture and fishing industries. However, flood avoidance and it’s value is one of the most important issues to Bennett, as Canadian management has prevented any flooding incidents such as the one at Vanport, Oregon, that wiped out the town in 1948. “What is the value of that flood avoidance? What is the value of that? I think it would be very, very significant, so we’re actually going to try to determine what the value is,” Bennett said. The B.C. government has already begun preliminary consultations to address concerns
from Columbia Basin residents, and the compensation received from the treaty. However, there hasn’t been much communication with the American side. “Their State Department is in charge in Washington and we haven’t heard a peep from them. This treaty carries on forever, unless one of the parties serves notice of termination,” said Bennett. “We’ve already announced we do not intend to serve notice of termination. The U.S. actually don’t have to say anything. The treaty will carry on forever the way it is. So we’re hoping that they will engage with us so we can talk about improvements, but we’re going to have to wait and see.”

Dalke joins rival, sets out after Arabian Oryx Continued from page 1 “It’s not being violent. You teach them the ethics and the responsibility that they’re supposed to have as a responsible sportsman or woman.” Aside from that segment, Dalke joined American Amanda Caldwell for her hunt, which was a broken-horned Arabian Oryx. As with Dalke’s hunt last week, the two were driven out to a specific enclosure within the ranch and then left to their own devices. The judges had both ladies empty their backpacks to see what they had brought along to check their preparedness before starting off. After that, Caldwell and Dalke got off to a quick start. “When we first got in there, we spotted them right away, and they were down in that really thick brush,” said Dalke. “She [Caldwell] wanted to come around to the other side where the watering hole was and where it opened up to more of a plains area.” After walking along the plains area, Caldwell had moved partially down a bank, setting up her rifle after spotting some animals. Dalke was still on the flatland above and had yet to join her when the onyx herd went on the move.

“When we found them, I hadn’t made it to going down the bank. I was stuck up on the plains and they were starting to come up right beside me about 50 yards away,” Dalke said. However, she was able to slowly manoeuvre herself down to Caldwell without spooking the creatures, and Caldwell was able to identify her specific oryx to make the shot. The animals were constantly moving around, and Caldwell’s shot was straight on rather than broadside, but she got the kill. “It was a good hunt, she did well,” said Dalke. “It was fun.” Next episode the ladies will participate in an archery competition with recurve bows, and there will be more hunting opportunities, according to Dalke. Every week an episode is released online and people can vote their support via email for each of the six finalists. To vote for Dalke, visit www.extremehuntress.com and click on the vote tab.

What is at the heart of Christianity?
L
ast week, I wrote about two things which I don’t believe describe what it means to be a Christian. It’s not about believing the right things, nor is it about what happens to us after we die. Today, I try to describe my view of Christian faith in a positive way. (This column often uses words by Marcus Borg — I share much of his viewpoint.) If I were to describe the heart of Christianity for me, it would be the word “transformation.” Christian faith is about a change of the heart. It is about the transformation of ourselves at that deep level that shapes our vision (how we see), our commitment (our loyalty and allegiance), and our values (how we live). My starting point is the great commandment (recorded in Matthew, Mark and Luke): “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbour as yourself.” This is how Jesus answers the question, “Which is the greatest commandment?” (Matthew and Mark) or “What must I do to inherit eternal (or abundant) life? (Luke) In the great commandment, we see that Christian faith has to do with how we live. It calls us to “love” — to love what God loves, including our neighbours. In the great commandment, “love” doesn’t refer so much to the emotion. It is an action word; it refers to a commitment we make. At the center of being Christian are these things: 1) A yearning and passion for God. About 1,600 years ago, Augustine wrote that our hearts are restless until they find their home in God. Yearning and passion
are closely related, even though the former can mean seeking without yet having found. 2) A passion for Jesus. For Christians, Jesus is the decisive revelation of God. Jesus shows us most clearly what the character and passion of God look like embodied in a human life. The centrality of Jesus is what makes Christians Christian. Other faiths are different. Rev. Yme Jews find the decisive revelation of God in the Torah, Woensdregt Muslims in the Quran. Christians find it in Jesus — in a person, not in a book. That doesn’t mean the Christian way is superior. When I affirm that we discern God in Jesus, it does not require that I have to deny that God is known elsewhere. Of course, Christians also find revelation in a book — the Bible. But for Christians, Jesus trumps the Bible. 3) Compassion. This is the central virtue of a life centered in God as known in Jesus. In Luke 6:36, Jesus summarized theology and ethics (the character of God and how we should live) in this way: “Be compassionate as God is compassionate” (Luke 6.36; most English translations read “Be merciful as God is merciful,” but the Greek word is best understood these days as “compassionate” rather than “merciful”.) In the Bible, compassion has a rich metaphorical meaning. In Hebrew and Aramaic, it is related to the word for “womb.” God is “womb–like,” giving birth to us and nourishing us. God feels for us and the whole of creation as a mother feels for the children of her womb: willing our well–
being, and sometimes becoming fierce when our well–being and the well–being of creation is threatened. We are to be compassionate as God is compassionate. Like love, compassion is not only a feeling but a doing. We don’t just feel compassion; we act with compassion, acting in accord with the feeling. 4) A passion for the transformation of this world. Compassion —love — in the Bible has a social form. We participate together in God’s passion for a world of justice and peace. Together, they are “the dream of God,” God’s dream for what our life together on earth should be like. This is what Jesus meant by the “kingdom of God” — it is how the world would be if we lived according to the dream of God. In this sense, justice does not mean punitive or criminal justice. It has to do with a fair and just distribution of the bounties of God’s earth, for the earth belongs to God (Psalm 24). It is about economics: everybody should have enough of the material necessities of life, not simply through charity but as the product of the way the social system is put together. In the same way, peace is about the end of violence and war, and making life whole for all people. Being Christian is about being captivated by these passions. They are not beliefs as much as they are convictions and commitments. That’s what being Christian is about. It is about the heart and its convictions and commitments. It is intensely about how we live in this life, in this time, in this place. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

hen Canadian Pacific Railway financier Donald Smith pounded in the last spike at Craigellachie, B.C., on Nov. 7, 1885, he succeeded in not only joining two ends of a railway but, more importantly, two sides of a continent. It was a move that unified the vast land that was Canada, allowing resources, manufactured goods and the populace to travel from east to west and back again. The westernmost portion of the transcontinental railway ran from Winnipeg to Calgary, through the Rockies at Banff and, via Golden and Kamloops, onwards to Port Moody on the west coast. This did little for the East Kootenay, mind you. It wasn’t until 1898, when the Crows Nest Division of the CPR ran a line from Lethbridge through the Crows Nest Pass via Fernie and Cranbrook to Kootenay Landing on Kootenay Lake, that the East Kootenay began to boom. For many, that was enough. For others, it was close but no cigar. Among the most displeased by the choice of the southern CPR route was Dr. Hugh Watt of Fort Steele. In a letter of Aug. 8, 1907, to the Cranbrook Herald, Dr. Watt states “Cranbrook stole our government offices from us and are now patting themselves on the back because they fancy they have succeeded in stealing our railway.” In truth, there were an awful lot of people in Fort Steele upset with the CPR. In 1897, Fort Steele was the main centre in a district that (they claimed) boasted over 3,000 people. It housed the government offices, it was a stunning location with plenty of natural resources and therefore it was, it was supposed, the perfect spot for the divisional headquarters of the new railway. So what went wrong? Various theories abound, among the most prominent being that Cranbrook town-founder James Baker plied his nefarious political

and Catharine Watt, daughter of a local hotel-keeper. His biggest claim to fame, family-wise (according to some) is the fact that he is the great-grandson of James Watt, whose improvements to the steam engine pretty much kicked-started the Industrial Age. That alone would make Dr. Watt worthy of mention in terms of locals who can slip into some fancy-dandy ancestry pants. Regardless, Dr. Watt cut his own swath. He owned and published the Fergus News-Record newspaper before he took up the study of medicine at Toronto University. Following his graduation he set up shop in Toronto for a time before travelling to the Cariboo where he became surgeon in charge of the Barkerville Hospital from 1892-95, two years of which, as a staunch Liberal, he served as representative in the Provincial Legislature. He moved on to Fort Steele in 1897, where he became Health Officer for the district, acting as surgeon for the railway, various mining and logging camps and the St. Eugene Mission Hospital. He was a talented writer and orator, fluent in a number Clement Hungerford Pollen (l. 1904) and Dr. Hugh Watt (r. 1902) of languages, a Presbyterian find themselves superimposed advertisement (1911) proclaim- Church elder, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a widower ing the merits of the Kootenay Central Railway. and father of two sons; one of talents in order to redirect the Kootenay Central Railway, whom practiced medicine in railway through his privately that particular subject may Toronto and the other a lawyer held lands which would be- not make much of an appear- in Victoria. The Bozon Effect
Star forward boosts Kootenay lineup tonight; Virtanen returns for Calgary Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Though the Kootenay Ice’s most recent two-game road trip through Saskatchewan wasn’t a productive one in the rink, it was an important journey for Tim Bozon. During the month of March, Bozon spent 27 days at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon under the care of medical physicians after coming down with neisseria meningitis. This week, the team’s travels took Bozon back to Saskatoon for the first time since leaving the hospital and he was met with a warm reception. For the 20-year-old native of Valbonne, France, his first road trip since rejoining the team was a special one. “The fact I [was able] to visit the hospital made my day,” Bozon said Thursday prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “I was pretty pumped after that. I was so happy. It was something I was a little bit anxious [about], going back. You don’t really want to go back [to a place where you went through something like that]. But just seeing everyone and [knowing] that finally, everything is back to normal and everybody is happy to see me definitely made my day.”
Prior to Wednesday’s game at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, the Blades welcomed Bozon back to the ice for the ceremonial puck drop. As he stepped onto the red carpet, fans in the building gave the Montreal Canadiens prospect a standing ovation. “I saw that [support] when I was in the hospital, the support from all around the league,” Bozon said. “It’s something that I appreciate. When I was in Saskatoon, I made sure I thanked everybody…the fans and the people that helped me at the hospital.” Bozon didn’t suit up for the Ice’s 5-2 loss to the Blades Wednesday night as he continues to deal with a lower-body injury. With the Calgary Hitmen (6-4-0-1) in town Friday, the former 90-point spitfire is ready to get back to business on the ice as he makes his 2014-15 WHL debut. “He’s such a dynamic offensive player,” said forward Luke Philp Thursday afternoon. “He can change a game. He has the ability to do that. If he comes back to the lineup, that would be huge to get some offense. We’ve been struggling to score goals lately. Tim could definitely help with that.” Heading into the weekend, the Ice re-

main the second-lowest scoring team in the WHL with 24 goals through 12 games. The Lethbridge Hurricanes are the lowest-scoring team in the league, having tallied 21 times in 11 outings. The Ice are nipping at the heels of the Seattle Thunderbirds, who have scored 26 times in 11 contests. At the top end of the totem pole, the Brandon Wheat Kings lead the WHL with 66 goals through 12 games. Though he has yet to suit up, Bozon has been with the team since arriving back in Cranbrook Oct. 12, leaving him plenty of time to take his team’s tough start to the season. “It’s all about details. Obviously we can always compete more,” Bozon said. “Everybody has to step up their
game. After that, as a team, we’ve got some skill up front and we can score goals. Maybe we were not lucky enough to score some goals [to this point]. When we don’t score goals, we have to push harder, keep it simple for a bit and then goals will come.” Tonight’s tilt with Calgary represents the third game in four nights for the Ice following back-to-back road losses Tuesday and Wednesday in Prince Albert and Saskatoon, respectively. The Hitmen last played Sunday, Oct. 19 in a 5-1 home-ice victory over the visiting Regina Pats. “It’s nothing different than any of the other teams are doing around the league right now,” Philp said. “You have phases of the year where you play three [games]

Forward Tim Bozon is slated to return to the Kootenay Ice lineup tonight for the first time since rejoining the team Oct. 10. in three nights, four in five nights, whatever it may be. You’ve got to be ready for it and prepare for it in the weeks ahead. “We’ve got to play hard. We’ve got to compete against them otherwise they’re going to walk all over us. They’re a good team, they’ve got a lot of firepower. It
comes down to us competing.” While Bozon boosts the fire power for the home team, the visitors are expected to be fuelled by the return of star forward Jake Virtanen. The 18-year-old Vancouver Canucks prospect led the Hitmen with 45 goals in 2013-14 but has
missed the first 11 games of the WHL season following off-season shoulder surgery. Forward Jon Martin (upper body) and defenceman Rinat Valiev (lower body) will once again be unavailable for the Ice as they continue to deal with injuries.
Giants Lincecum sent for MRI to determine availability Janie McC auley Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum was sent for an MRI of his tight back to determine whether he can remain on the active roster when the World Series resumes Friday night. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was walked off the field by athletic trainer Dave Groeschner during the eighth inning of San Francisco’s 7-2 loss in Game 2 when his left lower back tightened. Lincecum retired five straight before exiting
during Salvador Perez’s at-bat. “Timmy feels pretty good today,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday. “If something’s going on, then it’s obvious we’ll have to make the change. But my hope is he’s fine, and if he is, then I think he’ll be good to go tomorrow.” Lincecum hadn’t pitched since Sept. 28, not called upon out of the bullpen during the NL Division Series against Atlanta or the NLCS versus St. Louis. Lincecum missed pregame introductions before Game 1 Tuesday
because he was vomiting. Lincecum said after Wednesday’s loss at Kauffman Stadium that he didn’t think the long layoff contributed to tweaking his back, noting he experienced more tightness than pain. He felt his back tighten up on the lower left side on one pitch “and it didn’t look so good so I decided to stop.” “I don’t think so because I’ve been on the mound a few times in bullpen sessions,” he said. “I’m trying to go full bore in those. I don’t think it has anything to do with that.”
The 30-year-old Lincecum pitched the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas and was a key reliever during the 2012 title run and four-game sweep of Detroit. While Lincecum pitched his second no-hitter in 11 months against the Padres on June 25, the struggling four-time All-Star was moved to the bullpen in late August. “It showed that he continued to work in the bullpen,” Bochy said. “He had a great session three days ago, so he showed good command. He looked com-
fortable out there. So I didn’t like the score, but I was glad I was able to get him out there and get him some work. I know he has to feel good about that outing. I know we do, so he could play a bigger role now if he’s healthy.”

Triple trouble weekend on tap for Dynamiters Nitros face three games in three nights as Eddie Mountain battle continues Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kimberley Dynamiters will look to keep pace with the rest of the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Division with three games this weekend, including two against divisional rival Columbia Valley. The Nitros face the Rockies (2-8-0-3) in a home-and-home battle Friday in Invermere and Saturday at the Kimberley Civic Centre. The North Okanagan Knights (2-8-0-2) visit Kimberley for a Sunday afternoon matinee to close the weekend. “There isn’t that much difference between anybody in this league,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks Thursday afternoon. “If we don’t play our game and if we don’t work hard, we could be as bad as anybody and we can also be as good as anybody. “Columbia Valley is way better than their record indicates. The guys believe me on that one. We don’t see North Okanagan enough, but
every team that’s played us from over there has played us tough. We know that will be a tough game.” The Eddie Mountain Division remains a tough place to play with the Nitros and Fernie Ghostriders knotted atop the standings with 19 points apiece. The Golden Rockets trail Kimberley and Fernie by two points. Bancks hopes the consistency of his team will give them a leg up on the competition. “I always tell my players, the number one thing that a coach wants from them isn’t a star performance every night, but to give the same thing every night,” Bancks said. “When that starts to happen, then you can do some things as a team, where you know you’re going to get a good effort every night. “If we have lost this year, it hasn’t been because we’ve been lazy or anything. season for the Dynamiters. The 19-year-old puck-stopper has started all 12 games for Kimberley, registering a 2.92 goals-against average along the way. It is anticipated Brouwer will get a breather at some point this weekend after import goaltender Liam McBain was given clearance to play from Hockey Canada last week. McBain, a 17-yearold hailing from Tualatin, Ore., has been with the Nitros since training
camp. But there was a hold-up in processing his papers through Hockey Canada, preventing him from suiting up in regular season. “As a coaching staff, we decided to try to bring in Liam and we knew it wouldn’t be easy to get him approved,” Bancks said. “It’s going to be great to have Liam available.” Bancks said it is yet to be determined when McBain will get his first start.

Edwin Gaillard: Scourge of library thieves
It
to unnerve the book thief more than the handcuffs he had been put in. The man was Edwin White Gaillard, and he had some questions for Sandberg. Gaillard was the very first special police investigator for the New York Public Library, a position created for him as much as it was created by him. A librarian for most of his adult life, Gaillard learned about book theft the hard way. While running a special library for new immigrants in Manhattan,
popular retail clothing store), and deposited the books into a locker he had rented. After closing the locker door, he turned around to the shock of his life. Standing right behind him were two New York Public Library pages, and a policeman, who proceeding to inform Sandberg that he was under arrest. There was a fourth person there as well, standing slightly behind the everyone else. He was staring right through Sandberg, which began

Without any prior law enforcement training, Gaillard had uncovered an organized library theft ring, one which had been operating for decades. “Consequence of my investigations,” he told the police, “I am convinced that there is an organized body of men who know books values, library methods and who are skilled in book alteration, who prey upon public and

After walking a few blocks down Fifth Avenue, he removed a book from underneath his jacket, and tore out its due date card pocket. Sandberg did the same with another book a few blocks later. He then removed the call numbers glued to each book’s spine with his teeth. Cutting across a busy intersection he ducked into Best & Co. (a

semi-public libraries.” Gaillard was absolutely correct. Rare book dealers such as Charles Cox, Ben Harris, Harry Gold and Charles Romm all trafficked in books stolen from libraries. They would typically supply want lists to a revolving gang of book thieves, who would then steal them from public libraries. They would then resell the stolen items to collectors, other book dealers, and frequently other libraries. It was almost the perfect crime, as no one seemed to care much about it. If caught, a book dealer simply pled ignorance that the item was stolen. On the rare chance a thief was caught red handed, a variety of excuses — the favourite being absentmindedness — kept them out of jail. Libraries also appeared indifferent to these thefts, with administrators and staff too embarrassed to admit they had been robbed. Gaillard was unwilling to accept this situation. Although originally hired as a librarian at the newly opened New York Public Library, the director knew of Gaillard’s investigative skills. After training with the New York City Police for two years, Gaillard was ready to protect the largest public library in all of North America. “A culture hostile to book thievery” was first on Gaillard’s list. He placed uniformed guards (all retired policemen) at every exit, and he taught library staff how to recognize suspicious behaviour. He also rooted out a handful of staff who were complicit in the book theft ring, firing each one and promising criminal charges. One of his largest contributions was to create a secure rare book room, deep in the bowels of the library. The grab and dash method often used by book thieves was not going to work under his watch. Gaillard situated the rare book room on the building’s third floor, which was a good 100 feet from the main hallway. He then had all the hallway carpet ripped out and replaced with hard marble—anyone running would create a very loud commotion. Even if they did run, it was still 300
feet to the stairs, which were generally crowded. The bottom of the stairs bottlenecked before any exit was accessible— which now had highly capable guards waiting there. Gaillard felt it was now next to impossible to steal a book from the rare book room (It wasn’t. Three rare books were stolen in 1931 buy a team who simply “dead sprinted” with the items until they made it to the street.) This was the adversary Julius Sandberg found pressing criminal charges against him for theft from the New York Public Library. Like many before him, Sandberg told the judge it was all a misunderstanding. He knew he couldn’t remove the books from the library, but he was unable to get them at any other branch. He was going to return them once he had finished reading them. A probation officer who had conducted a pre-sentencing report, testified about Sandberg’s good character. While the judge was deciding whether to dismiss all charges against Sandberg, or give him a small fine, Gaillard asked to be heard. Besides wondering why, if Sandberg was intent on returning the books, did he remove all marks of library ownership from each book, Gaillard produced three crates of books he had found at Sandberg’s apartment, all owned by the New York Public Library. It was enough, and Sandberg was sentenced to a year in the dreaded Sing Sing Penitentiary. Gaillard died suddenly in 1928 from kidney disease. Until then, he had an incredible 100 percent prosecution rate against library thieves. He is fondly remembered by the people of New York —the true owners of the library books — as the one who had made their books safe. While he put a large dent in their trade, Gaillard never did stop the organized book theft ring responsible for all the library thefts. But the man who replaced Gaillard did. Next week!. NEWS Living the long ago high life Ebola’s scare factor: what we Ancient hunter-gatherers settled at great elevations in Peru’s Andes really should fear is fear itself ASSOCIATED PRESS
MALCOLM RIT TER Associated Press
NEW YORK — The air was thin, the nights were cold, the sun could easily burn the skin. But about 12,000 years ago, small groups of hunter-gatherers found a home very high up in the Peruvian Andes. Now, their stone tools and other artifacts have revealed their presence at about 14,700 feet (4,480 metres) above sea level, about as high as the Matterhorn and much higher than Machu Picchu. They lived there nearly 1,000 years earlier than any other known human habitation anywhere above even 13,000 feet (4,000 metres), researchers report. Among the bogs, wetlands and grasslands of the treeless plateau, the ancient people found plentiful deer and wild ancestors of llamas and alpacas to hunt for food and clothing between 12,000 and 12,500 years ago. There were rock shelters to live in, and deposits of obsidian for making stone tools. While the plants weren’t edible, some contained combustible resin and made for “really warm fires,” says researcher Kurt Rademaker. “I can’t say why people first went there,” said Rademaker, an author of a report released

Stone tools and other artifacts have revealed the presence of hunter-gatherers at about 14,700 feet above sea level, between 12,000 and 12,500 years ago in the Peruvian Andes. Thursday by Science. “But once they did go there, there were plenty of reasons to stay.” Rademaker is a researcher at the University of Tuebingen in Germany and a visiting assistant professor at the University of Maine in Orono. He led a research team that uncovered two sites of high-altitude Andes settlement in southern Peru, within about 100 miles (160 kilometres) of the Pacific coast and roughly west of Lake Titicaca. Both sites included workshops for making stone tools. Hundreds of tools were found there,
Space is latest destination for man’s ashes that have been scattered all over the world ASSOCIATED PRESS
A Maine mother who’s using social media to have her son’s ashes scattered all over the world has sent him on his greatest journey yet: to space. Using her Facebook page, which has more than 17,000 likes, Hallie Twomey has mailed hundreds of packets of her son C.J.’s ashes to strangers worldwide so they can be scattered at the many places he wasn’t able to see before he died more than four years ago. On Thursday, a rocket containing a vial of his ashes was launched into space from the desert in New Mexico. The rocket
spent a few minutes in space before landing in the nearby White Sands Missile Range. Twomey called it the perfect send off for her adrenaline-loving son, who was 20 years old when he shot himself after getting into an argument with his parents. His ashes have been scattered in nearly all 50 states and in dozens of places overseas. Twomey’s ashes and those of about three dozen others were on the rocket. The roughly $1,000 to launch his ashes was paid by for by Celestis, the company that has completed 13 such memorial spaceflights.
including scrapers that were evidently used to make clothing from hides. Sharpened points were probably used for spears. Bone and shell beads, used for adornment, were also recovered. Rademaker said he doubts people lived there year-round, noting the rainy season from December to March. “You’re cold,” he said. “You’re being rained on and snowed on and sleeted on all day long. It makes for misery.”
John Rick, an archaeologist at Stanford University who didn’t participate in the study, called the work “a major advance.” He said he had found an Andean site at about the same elevation that appeared to be about as old, but its age could not be as confidently established as in the new work. So the new study provides the first solid data showing extensive human settlement in the Andes that high and that long ago, he said.
Ebola is giving Americans a crash course in fear. Yet, they’re incredibly less likely to get the disease than to get sick worrying about it. First, the reality check: More Americans have married celebrity Kim Kardashian — three — than contracted Ebola in the U.S. The two Dallas nurses who came down with Ebola were infected while treating a Liberian man, who became infected in West Africa. Still, schools have been closed, people shunned and members of Congress have demanded travel bans and other dramatic action — even though health officials keep stressing that the disease is only spread through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person, and the risk is extremely low. That’s because Ebola pushes every fear button in our’ instincts, making us react more emotionally than rationally, experts say. Bruce McEwen, a neuroscientist who studies stress at Rockefeller University in New York, said the fear can lead people to change their lifestyle, making them isolate them-
selves, lose sleep, stop exercising, change their diet for the worse and drink or smoke. “It’s likely to cause them problems down the road even if there is no direct infection,” McEwen said. There are two types of fear that can almost come down to good fear and bad fear. The good fear is the type we look for around Halloween in haunted houses or on roller coaster rides at amusement parks. It’s short, intense, gets our juices going and removes boredom, said Vanderbilt University psychia-
try professor David Zald. “There’s a benefit of being afraid. In controlled situations, many of us enjoy briefly being afraid,” Zald said. “It can whip our attention to the here and now like nothing else.” That type of acutebut-short stress actually makes our immune system work better, McEwen said. But long-term exposure to stress has the reverse effect on the immune system. That’s when it elevates our blood pressure and contributes to heart disease.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Please help me understand why my husband of 10 years is slowly distancing himself. We used to laugh, go to the movies, go out for dinner and breakfast on Sundays, but now he doesn’t want me to touch him. He has no compassion, and there’s no sex and no affection. I’ve asked him why this is happening, and he simply says, “That was never me. I’m not the passionate person you think.” When I want to hold his hand, he wriggles away. I’m affectionate and passionate, but not smothering or overbearing. I love my husband and want to be close to him. He goes to the casinos with male friends, but will not take me out. If I suggest going somewhere together, I get major attitude and total negativity from him. He doesn’t even want to go out for my birthday, Valentine’s Day or our anniversary. What the heck? We now only share our address and last name. About two years ago, he suggested that we have separate bedrooms, and I agreed because I didn’t know what else to do. I’m thinking of moving out. We are like roommates with no communication at all. I have suggested counseling, but he says, “You can go. I’m not interested.” What’s going on? Any suggestions would be helpful. -- Slowly Falling Out of Love Dear Slowly: There are several possibilities. Your husband may be having an affair and his affection is saved for the other woman. He may have a hormonal problem that is interfering with his libido, and he pushes you away in order to avoid being intimate. He may be gay and only put on a show to get married and now is no longer interested in the charade. He may have a gambling problem and all of his attention is focused there. Here’s the suggestion: Get counseling for yourself. You have choices to make, and some guidance during the process would be helpful. Dear Annie: I appreciate that you printed information on ovarian cancer and that September was ovarian cancer awareness month. I am writing you to find out whether you are aware of any support walks, bike rides, etc., to advance people’s awareness of ovarian cancer? My aunt was recently diagnosed with the disease, and I have been disappointed in the lack of information. I recently moved to Sarasota and found out that the only chapter in Florida for ovarian cancer is in Tallahassee. If you have any thoughts, please let me know. -- S. Dear S.: There are various walks and rides for ovarian cancer scheduled throughout the year, although we cannot promise that any are in Sarasota. You may need to start your own. For information, support and scheduling, please look into the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (ocrf.org), the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (ovariancancer. org), the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (ovarian.org) and the American Cancer Society (cancer.org/cancer/ovariancancer). Bless you for doing what you can to raise awareness of this terrible disease. Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from “Guilty Conscience,” who had decided to stay in her marriage after a fling with a married man. But she was still unhappy in her marriage and couldn’t stop thinking about her beau. Years ago, I found myself in the same predicament. My husband and I went to counseling, but things did not improve. I, too, could not forget about the other man. One of my bosses urged me to follow my heart, so I divorced my husband and began raising my small children on my own. My lover divorced his wife, and we married a year later. We have now been happily married for 25 years. Every situation is different, but sometimes these things work out. -- Happy in Alabama Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Prominent imam say new converts need to be vetted Bill Graveland Canadian Press
CALGARY — A prominent Muslim cleric says he intends to reach out to other imams to make sure that new converts to Islam are watched closely for signs of radical beliefs. While authorities have said little about the motives for this week’s attacks on soldiers in Ottawa and Quebec, Imam Syed Soharwardy of Calgary says he is concerned about media reports that the two perpetrators were recent converts to Islam. Soharwardy, the founder of Muslims Against Terrorism and
the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, said imams should look for warning signs, such as a criminal record or drug abuse, before allowing an individual to convert. “I’m not sure who helped them to convert to Islam. Who was the imam? What kind of relationship did those people have with those people who converted them to Islam? Those very important questions need to be answered,” said Soharwardy. “They should take on the responsibility of checking backgrounds and staying in touch and make sure this person is not being recruited by
any radical organization or terrorist organizations.” Soharwardy estimates 20 to 30 Canadians convert to Islam every week. He said it is the responsibility of clerics to make sure the converts are doing it for the right reasons. Soharwardy said he was sickened by the fatal attacks on Canadian soldiers this week. His organization has scheduled a memorial service Friday for Patrice Vincent and Nathan Cirillo. Calgary’s Chris Boudreau, whose 22-yearold son was killed while fighting with Islamic extremists in Syria, agreed
Imam Syed Soharwardy
there needs to be more support for converts to Islam. Her son, Damian Clairmont, converted to Islam as a teen and reportedly died in heavy fighting in the city of Aleppo last winter as a member of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Clairmont found religion at 17 after a depression, Boudreau said. He changed his name to Mustafa al-Gharib. His mother noticed that Islam initially appeared to help and he became peaceful, calm and happy. But as time passed, he became more fundamentalist in his beliefs. “When they convert to Islam for whatever reasons the worst thing is, without the right direction and guidance, they’re converting for the wrong reason or there’s no one there to help them assimilate,” said Boudreau. “They’re vulnerable at that point.” Boudreau said when
Damian first became interested he attended a mosque in the city’s northeast and met some “great young men” who were helping him along. She said when he switched to a different mosque things changed for the worst. “That’s where things started to go off and once you get introduced to the ideologies and someone points you in the right direction on the Internet, then the rest of it’s done that way.” Soharwardy said he believes that many Muslims are being brainwashed by radical groups such as ISIL. He said there needs to be more sharing of intelli-
gence between Canadian law enforcement and trusted members of the Muslim community who could work together to “deradicalize” those at risk. He said this week’s attacks have him concerned about a backlash against Canada’s mainstream Muslim community. “They are harassed and targeted by the fanatics who consider these people like myself as traitors, as people who are not good Muslims, who are supporting an infidel government and on the other side there are other people who think that every Muslim is the same.”
Mom of gunman says she is crying Gunman angry about no passport, for the victims of Ottawa shootings had drug problems, say shelter mates Associated Press
OTTAWA — The mother of the man accused of killing a soldier at the National War Memorial before opening fire in Parliament said she is crying for the victims of the shooting, not her son. In a brief and tear-filled telephone call Thursday, Susan Bibeau told the Associated Press she did not know what to say to those hurt in the attack. “Can you ever explain something like this?” she said. “We are sorry.” Authorities have identified the shooter as Michael Zehaf Bibeau, who was known to police in Montreal and Vancouver. Susan Bibeau said she was devas-
tated for the victims of the attack. “If I’m crying it’s for the people,” she said, struggling to hold back tears. “Not for my son.” She and her husband had earlier sent the Associated Press an email expressing horror and sadness at what happened. “I am mad at my son, I don’t understand and part of me wants to hate him at this time,” the email said, explaining that her son seemed lost “and did not fit in.” “I his mother spoke with him last week over lunch, I had not seen him for over five years before that,” the email said. “So I have very little insight to offer.”
Le e -A n n e G o o d ma n Canadian Press
OTTAWA — Those familiar with the Parliament Hill gunman in his final days say he was angry about failing to get a passport and struggled with drug addiction. Norman LeBlanc, a 60-yearold former truck driver who frequents the Ottawa shelter where Michael Zehaf Bibeau was bunking, says he so angered some of the men at the facility that there was almost a fight in recent days. LeBlanc says Zehaf Bibeau ranted at length about how much
Michael Zehaf Bibeau he hated Canada, and was furious about having failed to get a passport in order to leave. He says the griping almost prompted some of other men at the mission to take Zehaf Bibeau
outside and beat him up. Zehaf Bibeau, who told people he had come to Ottawa from Vancouver to secure a passport, often prayed with two Somali men in the shelter in an east-facing window in accordance with the Muslim faith. One of them, Abdel Kareen Abubakrr, denies his new friend’s actions had anything to do with his faith. Abubakrr says Zehaf Bibeau was a drug addict who wanted to leave Canada to get treatment — but began doing drugs again in the days prior to the shooting.
