Avison kickstarts donation challenge Rebecca Watson Omineca Express

DONATION: Avison kickstarts funding to bring a pool to Vanderhoof with a $10,000 donation challenging other businesses to do the same. Holding the cheque is Stewart Sinclair, president of Avison Management, and Paul Stewart, representing the Regional Pool Society.

The Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre Society received their first large corporate donation Oct. 16 from Avison Management Services. The forestry consultant company donated $10,000 to the Aquatic Centre in hopes of starting a snowball effect, said Stewart Sinclair, President of Avison Management Services. “The idea is to get the process jump started,” said Mr. Sinclair. “We challenge some of the other businesses in Vanderhoof to now donate. Let’s get this project on the road.” With $7,833 raised from the comedy night last month, $2,833 from Invest Local BC, $2,400 from original memberships and $10,000 from Avison, the total amount of raised funds to date is $23,066. All the money raised for the pool goes to the Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre. The large donation from Avison was deposited in the Aquatic Centre Society’s

account and will stay there for the long-term, said Edna Oryschuk, secretary for the Stuart Nechako Regional Pool Society. “We’re raising funds on our own but the donation from Avison is much appreciated and is out there now to challenge other groups,” said Ms. Oryschuk. “It’s heart warming that we have folks in the community to support fundraising efforts [like the comedy night] and the public fundraising group will continue to have events because it all goes into the same pot, but it was very generous of Avison to kickstart the challenge.” Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre Society was Paul Stewart, president of the Stuart Nechako Regional Pool Society, a group established to help raise funds and maintain public presence. The regional group was formed about a year ago and over the summer the public fundraising group was developed in Vanderhoof to help with local fundraising. For more information visit the Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre Facebook page.

Early Years grand opening at Carrier Sekani Rebecca Watson Omineca Express It’s a good day in the neighbourhood when more free services become available for kids. The Early Years Centre of Carrier Sekani Family Services held a grand opening Oct. 24 to introduce an

array of new services. Held at the CSFS home location, the exciting day was accompanied by snacks, kids games and a ribbon cutting which included mayor Gerry Thiessen and elder Mini Thomas of Saik’uz First Nation. Each family that attended also got a free book to take home for each child

to commemorate the occasion. “These groups and sponsorships are so important to the community,” said Mayor Gerry Thiessen just before cutting the ribbon to officially open the new Early Years Centre. “When you see our students excel on a national level like Nathan

Nunn, it’s so great and it all starts right here.” The CSFS has helped both Aboriginal and nonAboriginal families for more than 10 years as a place to find and access all of the early-years services offered in the District of Vanderhoof. The new Early Years Centre will help to

provide even more opportunities for families with children aged 0-6, all of which will enhance the current services already offered, said Dawne Persson, the early childhood development team leader. “We’re a one stop shop,” said Ms. Persson. “And with these added programs we’re

EARLY YEARS: Mayor Gerry Thiessen, elder Mini Thomas and Dawne Persson at the official ribbon cutting Oct. 24 at Carrier Sekani. Continued from pg 1 Tuesdays at NeighbourLink, Wednesday at W.L. McLeod and Thursdays at Saik’uz, all from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. The new Gym Time Playgroup will run every Friday from 3:30-4:45 in Sinkut View School gym. The new Lending Library will allow parents to borrow toys and will be available five days a week, 8:30 - 4:30 at the CSFS building across from the Credit Union in Vanderhoof. “We have a whole binder parents and children can look through where they can choose a toy and take it home, said Ms. Persson. “We’re also planning on expanding the lending library to have a separate location in the Glad Tidings Church basement sometime in the new year.

Some existing and continued services and referrals offered by CSFS include developmental screenings, access to local childcare and preschools, speech therapy, occupational therapy and access to Nechako Community Services. Tanya Lobelle, owner of lots of tots daycare, loves the idea of the new services. “We have child resource and referral but as a daycare owner I feel disconnected. It’s been tough for people to find daycare so I’m hoping this will be an avenue where people can find me, said Ms. Lobelle at the grand opening. Hello, my name is Dwayne Lindstrom. I am running for Mayor in the upcoming Municipal Election and would like to introduce myself to those of you I have not met and re-introduce myself to others. I feel fortunate to have made the Fraser Lake area my home since 1956. Diana and I have been married for 40 years and raised two sons and a daughter here. We enjoy their visits home with their families and being able to introduce our grandson, Mattias, to the area. I made my living logging for the past 40 years and own some rental properties in Fraser Lake. I enjoy curling, snowshoeing, fishing, camping, hunting and just wandering through the bush on either snow shoes or with my quad. Many people have to travel away from home to work and/or to play

and I feel fortunate that here in Fraser Lake, we are able to enjoy both in our backyard. I would like to see that opportunity continue for others in the community. For that reason, I have participated in many committees and public meetings to better understand the effects of development on our community. I served one term as a Councillor before becoming the Mayor of Fraser Lake for two terms. I am a Director for the Fraser Lake Community Foundation Endowment Fund and sit on the Boards of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, Omineca Beetle Action Coalition, Stuart Nechako Regional Hospital Board, Northern Development Initiative Trust, and Regional District of Bulkley Nechako Forestry Committee. In addition, I represent the Village of Fraser Lake on the British Columbia Economical Development Association. I am an Alternate Director for Yellow Head Association and a member of the negotiation team for the Log Truck Industry in Fraser Lake. I am running for Mayor to serve you, the

My resume includes: banking, marketing, accounts payable, electoral supervisor, manager of recreation for the District of Vanderhoof, jobs options coordinator/instructor for CNC and now somehow - a professional volunteer. ing an Outdoor Woman, Community Spirit Family Fun Night, Phraser Connector, and director of Autumn Services. I have worked alongside mayors and councillors and understand many municipal practices and procedures. I have drive and determination to get things done and would be proud to represent Fraser Lake as an ambassador for our community.

Part of my vision for Fraser Lake includes: accessing the aging infrastructure by paving roads/walking trails for easier accessibility, beautification and maintenance of our parks/ recreational areas, an elevator at the arena, supporting a place seniors can age in, feasibility and affordability of a community center, curbside recycling and public transportation.

Tax payers, businesses and industry are a big part of future community planning so I want to assist in volunteer appreciation banquets. Also on the list is doggy bags/garbage bins along most parks and walking trails. Becoming mayor for me also means better communication with emphasis on accountability, transparency and of course, an open door policy.

Fraser Lake councillor candidates for 2014 election

Dan Duncan for councillor

The Village of Fraser Lake has an aging population and it is very important for Mayor and Council to put a concerted effort towards ensuring that those individuals continue to enjoy residing

in our community and don't feel the need to leave our town. Fraser Lake needs more Seniors' Housing and some public transportation. Throughout my six years of experience as

a Councillor, I have created strong relationships between myself and all members of the community. I believe I am a strong, vibrant member of this community and I have continued to build

I have lived in Fraser Lake almost 50 years and I feel it’s time for some change. What I have noticed is the need for a new perspective on council. We should bring in new people with new ideas. I would also love to see better communication from council to the members of our community and more encouragement to the public to attend council meetings and feel comfortable to do so.

Fraser Lake is the place I raised my daughter and where my husband and I call home. We had a successful logging business working for the West Fraser Sawmill for 39 years but I am retired now and volunteer at Autumn Services Community Dropin Centre. As an avid volunteer, I have helped various organizations over the years starting with being a brownie leader. I have worked with

mental health organizations in support groups, facilitating both the Family to Family and Bridges programs. I also sat on two mental health boards in Vancouver and have enjoyed helping Meals on Wheels in Fraser Lake. Another one of my accomplishments have been volunteering for the Fraser Lake and Area Cancer Support Group. We have raised in excess of $30,000 by local fundraising

with additional revenue through Angels Care, a store front we ran for little over a year. I am a good candidate for council because I care about the vision people in Fraser Lake want for their community and will work hard to see those visions realized. Having worked as the administrative assistant for the Village of Fraser Lake for several years, I have sat in on council meetings, took minutes, calculated

Craig LePoidevin for councillor

I was born and raised in Fraser Lake and I am proud of how much growth our community has seen. A year and a half ago I became the owner of Par 3 Sports and I am thoroughly committed to running

the store and ensuring that it provides a viable service to the community of Fraser Lake and the surrounding area. Over the years we have seen businesses come and go in Fraser Lake and if we are to keep business in town, it is imperative that we provide what people need. Being a local business owner has allowed me to get a much better understanding of the demographics of Fraser Lake and has helped me discover Fraser Lake’s

strengths and weaknesses. I have a keen interest in the youth of Fraser Lake and enjoy my role as coach of the Bantam hockey team. Our youth enjoy soccer, hockey, junior curling, our fabulous new skate board park, and activities organized through the Village of Fraser Lake. However I believe we need to offer more and hope to work closely with our youth to elicit new ideas. Our seniors also play a major role in the

demographic of Fraser Lake and I would like to look into finding transportation opportunities for them. Many of our seniors have no access to transportation, and I believe there are ways to address both the need for incidental transportation to help get a senior to an appointment or shopping and for group transportation that will take seniors on day trips. My family and I are avid outdoor enthusiasts. We enjoy time on the Village’s

My name is Lynn Clark and I have been a resident of the Fraser Lake north shore for 17 years. I am employed by Nechako Valley Community Services Society as an early childhood development consultant, am currently the chairperson of the Fraser Lake Early Childhood Development Committee and am also a respite foster parent. The things that are most important to me

are my family, education/personal/spiritual growth and water conservation. I will make a good council person because through my work and personal life I have contact with a broad cross section of community members and am very approachable. I take my commitments very seriously and do everything within my power to follow through on them. I am financially responsible and respect-

ful of other peoples hard earned money. I have also sat on a broad range of society and non profit boards in the various communities I have lived in. The things I would most like to see in Fraser Lake are road improvements, and more services for seniors. In order to attract and retain young families I would like to see an increase in the number and types of recreational opportunities available

to children and youth such a more toddler friendly playgrounds, incentives for sports team coaches and BMX trails. I also would like to see the vision of summer businesses down at White Swan Park revisited and the road to the park become more of a focal point in order to build on the tourism potential of being the White Swan capital of the world. I would also like to see a greater effort put in to the devel-

on my relationships ever since moving to Fraser Lake in 1993. Aside from that, my level of commitment to the position and my desire to see Fraser Lake reach higher potential makes me a great candi-

date for councilor. My family however is without a doubt the most important thing there is to me. Having

the confidence of others and them having faith in my integrity and my ability is also extremely important to me.

We also love kayaking, boating and fishing on both Fraser Lake and Francois Lake. Over the past few years Fraser Lake has embraced becoming a healthier, more active community. I am passionate about healthy lifestyle and I would love to help Fraser Lake become a healthy, active, productive and safe place for all citizens.

School District 91. Education is everything. It is the groundwork for the trades, professions, the arts and academia. I cannot stand on the sidelines. I am compelled to become involved and hopefully contribute to the future of the next generation. It has become obvious that education is changing. From the technology available today, to

the idea of changing the school year, to various ideas on how the curriculums are disbursed, even the diversity of our students, education is in flux more than ever before. And I want to contribute. My child went through this public school system and now I have grandchildren getting ready to embark on this adventure. I am

running to ensure that parents and grandparents have a voice in all of this. I have the time and I believe some insights and talent that I can contribute to ensure a quality education for all students of SD91. I have been a contributing member of this area for over 30 years. I have been a part of the Chamber of Commerce, Crimestoppers, Crime

Watch patrol and Rotary International. I assisted with the creation of such community events as the great pumpkin walk and parade of lights. I continue to work with the Integris Community Foundation, the Vanderhoof International Airshow and the Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre to name a few. I want to see my community

thrive. I want to be a positive difference and because of my belief that education is everything I now want to represent you as a school trustee in one of the most forward thinking districts in the province. I look forward to working with this district to make our schools even more vibrant and positive.

school trustee. I was born and raised in Vanderhoof with interests in farming, horses and 4H. Although I moved away for about 3 years, when I found out I was expecting my first child, Vanderhoof was the only place I wanted to be. Now, my husband Cooper and I, have 3 children in the public school system. Rayea,

who is in Grade 10, Brody in Grade 6, and the youngest Carter who is in Grade 1. I believe it takes the whole community to raise a child and this community has a history of doing a fine job of it. Education is the back bone of humanity and it needs to be treated as such. Education is forever changing and we as parents, teachers

and other members of the community need to be there to support that. I currently work in the public health care system where the skill set for my job includes; teamwork, collaboration, quality improvement, communication

have worked for various Ministries within the provincial government and have served as a volunteer for numerous committees, including PAC President, Dry Grad, Winter Games and the Vanderhoof Curling Rink. I believe my knowledge of the area and my expertise in working with various levels of government would be an asset to the Nechako Lakes School District. With an ever changing social, economic and technological environ-

ment, educators are facing the challenges of delivering the basics while expanding on the skills sets of their students. The role of a School Trustee is to work with local administrators, educators, parents and students to develop and maintain a school system that addresses local priorities and includes the values and expectations of the community. I have the energy and time to commit and I believe I can be a strong advocate for the area.

Food and Teenagers I often hear about the ravenous appetites of boys, and the issues girls have with trying to stay thin and eating less. So let’s talk a little bit about nutrition for teens. Nowadays many teens and parents alike don’t have the time they need to make wholesome good homemade foods, too many tasks, games, exams, deadlines, and stress. Fast food becomes the norm and skipping meals is usually not given a second thought. So what can you do? · Plan and prep some quick to go meals that can be taken from the freezer right away or the night before perfect for lunches, dinners, meals, if you don’t have the time, consider doing a Co-Op with some neighbours or friends, get together make big batches of meals and freeze them separately, it lets you be social, have fun and provide healthy alternatives. · Focus on nutrition and not weight – during the growth phase for teens, there is no need to worry about weight, make sure to have plenty of nutrients to build the body well and strong · Keep empty calories (soda, chips, etc) out of the home and make sure to stock plenty of healthy snacks, keep the fridge stocked with prepped raw veggies (you can even throw in a dip) Veggies and fruits tend to be the most forgotten food for teens and they contain massive amounts of great nutrient, so be sure to eat plenty of fruits and veggies and make them easy and fun to eat. · Be a role model – this can’t be stated enough, don’t expect your teen to eat kale while you’re having lasagna (this is extremely important for children who watch their parents eat and copy them) · Carry healthy snacks like trail mix, dried fruit, nuts (unsalted) around with you, in your bag, in your locker, at your desk.. so when the need to snack hits you, ta da, a healthier option than that bag of chips in the vending machine. Next week – teens and calcium

Difficult birth for LNG cash cow Tom Fletcher Black Press Debate is underway on the B.C. Liberal government’s tax and environmental plan for liquefied natural gas exports, amid the usual political theatre. Most media reported that the government “slashed” its proposed seven-per-cent LNG processing income tax by half, caving in to demands of international energy giants led by Petronas of Malaysia. The 3.5 per cent tax wouldn’t even take full effect until the massive capital investment is written down, and would rise to five per cent after 20 years of production. All of this casts further doubt on Premier Christy Clark’s extravagant election campaign promise to use LNG revenues to wipe out B.C.’s debt, currently approaching $70 billion, and provide an Alberta-style “prosperity fund” to perform further miracles. The seven per cent figure was the top end of the range presented this spring while negotiations with LNG investors were ongoing, so it’s not really accurate to say it was “slashed.” This cash calf hasn’t been born yet, and it remains to be seen if it will survive. Finance Minister Mike de Jong pointed out some of the shifts in the global gas market that have reduced expectations. Japan, one of the potential investors, is considering restarting its

nuclear plants as it recovers from the 2011 Fukushima earthquake. China’s manic growth is slowing, and it has signed a long-term deal to import cheaper Russian pipeline gas. Oil prices have dropped. The government’s change of tone started with the recent throne speech, which emphasized the fate of B.C.’s only current export market. “Like forestry, B.C.’s natural gas industry has relied on exports to the United States,” the speech observed. “But the American shale gas revolution has meant the export south has dried up – and is never coming back.” So before B.C. gets to that prosperity fund, it’s got to stop the bleeding. You may recall it was a U.S. hurricane-induced spike in gas revenues that allowed the province to spread an extra billion to calm its labour waters for the 2010 Olympics. The finance ministry estimates that after the startup period, a medium-sized LNG export operation would pay total taxes of around $800 million a year to the province. De Jong notes that this is more revenue than B.C. will collect from the entire forest industry this year, from a single plant. There are 18 currently proposed. This new LNG income tax is nowhere near the biggest source. It’s bigger than the carbon tax that LNG producers will pay on

fuel use, but only a fourth of what B.C. collects in royalties for selling the gas. The biggest source of revenue from this hoped-for plant is “other taxes,” which include sales tax and corporate income tax, which B.C. increased to 11 per cent last year. University of Calgary economist Jack Mintz, who supported B.C. on its ill-fated harmonized sales

tax, says this additional LNG tax is wrong-headed at any rate. “If other provinces take the same view with respect to resource taxation, new levies would be applied to oil refining, forest product manufacturing, mining processing and a host of other activities linked to resource industries,” Mintz wrote last week in the Financial Post. If B.C. does get a substantial

LNG export industry, it will include gas from Alberta, with royalties going there, not here. And companies are also wrangling with the federal government over its taxes, with local governments and First Nations still in line for their cut. The big question isn’t whether B.C. will get its fair share. It’s whether there will be anything to share.

My phone rang at 10:51 am, I picked up the phone only to find no one on the other end. No words just an empty line. The phone number was 1-866-459-2530. Today, A ‘Mr Anderson’ called from another unknown number saying ‘’I had just won $95,000.00 and a new car’’. That phone number was 1-876-302-8142. Mr Anderson, who although worked hard to not speak with an accent, had an obvious accent which enabled him to work very hard in order to properly pronounce the words. Needless to say English was definitely not his first language. He claimed that because I paid all my bills on time, and had shopped at Walmart, and two other places I was not familiar with, my name had automatically been entered into a draw. Apparently, out of 1,000 names, I had won. I could either pick it up at their main office in Summerland, BC or I could go to my local post office and

via Western Union, send them a one per cent fee totalling $300. They would then deliver the winnings to my home address which he said included a car and money. He made special note to say I had to send them the $300 for the delivery of the car in advance of either picking it up in Summerland or them delivering it. It sure is a strange coincidence that we had only been in Summerland a month ago and purchased gasoline from a local garage along with Timbits from their local Tim Hortons. The scariest part is that it was all on our credit card. Needless to say I called the local RCMP and they gave me the number for the Canadian Anti Fraud 1-888-495-8502. I am sharing this so others can be informed about this scam and to be sure they have the telephone number to report any other telephone fraudsters. Linda Connolly, Vanderhoof BC.

Halloween safety tips for parents and youngsters Vanderhoof has the pumpkin walk in place of house-to-house, but kids and adults should still be weary of night fun taking proper precaution to the dangers of walking at night and eating candy given by strangers Submitted by RCMP For young children Halloween is one of the most exciting days in the year. Costumes are selected, friends arranged and neighbourhoods often picked out well in advance. As they go about their trick or treating, basic safety tips are often overlooked. Here are a few tips to keep youngsters safe.

out at any time. - Be prepared to react and stay alert Homeowners:

- If you are participating in Halloween, keep your lights on and porch or walk-

way clear of debris and potential items easily tripped on.

Remember, it is prohibited to possess or discharge fireworks in the District of Van-

derhoof without prior written approval of the District of Vanderhoof Fire Chief.

DDUTY Children: - Halloween is more fun when shared with friends, never go alone - Can you see? Are you being seen? Wear reflective, bright coloured costumes and avoid masks that restrict your vision - Only trick or treat at houses with lights turned on - Never eat treats until an adult has inspected them - Don’t criss-cross streets or run out from between parked vehicles - Walk on sides of roads or sidewalks and when approaching homes, be respectful by not cutting across lawns Motorists: - Slow, slow, slow, expect kids to pop

Knowing what to take in school can be tough for anyone but the College of New Caledonia Vanderhoof campus is continually upgrading their courses to best fit the needs of our growing population. Office Administrator, Trades, Healthcare and more, the college offers a variety of choices for students who are looking to upgrade, transfer, and/or simply obtain the tools they need to enter the workforce. With Career Week in our midst, Oct. 25 - Nov. 1, Black Press spoke with students on what careers they would like to have and where they are on their career path. Healthcare Assistant is an eightmonth program where students learn about home support and care aid. “We’re the front liners,” said Michelle Nylander, an HCAP student. “The baby boomers are coming in the next few years, opening up job opportunity for health care. Dementia and Alzheimer is where it will hit hard.” In the Health Care Assistant program students learn about the dynamics of working with people who may be elderly or physically or mentally

disabled. Students can find jobs in retirement living, home care or hospitals. Norma Martens is also a HCAP student who is fully supported by Dease River First Nations. “I’ve always enjoyed working with the elders, going into First Nations community. They have a lot to teach us and we never stop learning.” Applied Business Technologies is a nine-month program with a focus on bookkeeping, computer programs, keyboarding, personal and professional development and office administration. Danielle Weaver is a stay-at-home mom but wanted to take the ABT program to broaden her horizons. “I have a business raising horses and cows but I took the program to better myself and get a job. My brother in Kamloops grows organic beef and I would like to be involve in his expansion.” Lindsay Swanson works for Fort Fraser Elementary as an aboriginal education worker and was sponsored through Nak’azdli to take the ABT course. “Now that I’ve started learning Continued on page 11

schools to find out what students in Vanderhoof have planned for their careers Continued from page 10 bookeeping I want to look at payroll. I’ve surprised myself how good I am.” Debbra Hes, the ABT instructor, says last year all 13 graduates were working within two weeks of the program. “Employees are always anxious to take work experience students from the ABT program. They spend time training them in the placement and often employ them. Quite often now the ABT is a standard for office admin staff in the community.’ Job Options is a popular upgrading sevenweek course that introduces students back into the workforce. Students are taught how to make their resume, job search, WHIMIS training, food safety, math and english upgrading and first aid to name a few. At the end of the course their is a job placement. Students are looking into locations in town such as Tim Horton’s, Co-op cashier, the Daily Perk, lumber yard, Independence, Saik’uz addictions counselling and saw mill. “It’s really building my self esteem, I’m feeling much more confident. It’s been a while since I graduated,” said Diane William 50. Brenda Antoine agrees that the program has helped her achieve what she never thought possible. “It gives me such a positive outlook for my future. I found different ways to look for jobs and it inspires me to be more of a role model,” said Ms. Antoine. “I never grew up with a role model, I worked in the bush most of my life so I also want to find something easier on my body, I am a grandmother after all.”

Featuring the spirit of the local people Vanderhoof nurse wins excellence award Rebecca Watson Omineca Express Vanderhoof – As a humble and selfless servant of others, Celia Evanson 55, of Vanderhoof is now celebrated as one of British Columbia’s top nurse practitioners. For the past 20 years Celia has dedicated her life to helping others and was recognized at the 2014 annual College of Registered Nurses of B.C. (CRNBC) award ceremony on Sept. 25 in Vancouver for her outstanding contributions to the nursing profession and for demonstrating excellence in relation to the CRNBC professional standards for registered nurses and nurse practitioners. Nominated by her colleagues, she was chosen as one of 36 for the award due to her perseverance of working in small rural communities and the quality of care she gives to patients. “Her work ethic is unparalleled, it’s the best and strongest I’ve ever worked with,” said Laurren Rodgers, a doctor in Fort St. James. “I’ve worked side by side with Celia for the past year and she always has a positive attitude and outlook, is extremely helpful to her colleagues and extremely caring with her patients. Her knowledge base is amazing, same with her skill set, yet she is hugely humble. You’ll never hear her bragging or showing off but she can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of all nurses and doctors.” Although she has lived in Vanderhoof for ten years Celia travels to two First Nations communities in Fort St. James (Nak’azdli and Tl’azt’en) as well

as Stuart Lake Hospital once a week to get to her patients. She even occasionally makes home calls knowing all too well that a major obstacle in the north for healthcare is isolation. “I think sometimes in rural areas we tend to have an aging population but a lot of northern challenges have to do with geography,” said Celia. “Each community has it’s own resources and there are different community resources that support patient care. One thing you have to be is innovative being able to travel to small remote communities, meeting people where they are and getting an understanding to what resources are available to them through the community.” She started her career in Vancouver working as a nurse for a few years. She then decided she wanted to move to a smaller community in Grand Forks where she eventually completed her nurse practitioner training, which in total gave her seven years of schooling. Celia soon realized working in a rural area was her true passion and that she never wanted to go back to the big city. “It’s different working in the rural community because you get to do so many types of nursing. Your not stuck in one area so there is a lot of personal growth and satisfaction,” she said. From there she moved to Vanderhoof and became a nurse practitioner in Fraser Lake with Northern Health. With her came all the big-city clinical training which she used to start a revolution of how people in remote areas receive their healthcare.

“Celia was the first nurse practitioner hired by Northern Health and is essentially responsible for the development of that role across the entire health authority,” says health services administrator April Hughes. “She not only established the first practice model within an interdisciplinary health centre; she was also the first health care provider in our area to develop a comprehensive model for outreach services.” Yet like many, Celia was not always in her current career. She initially worked in an industrial setting and got involved in occupational first aid. She realized through that experience her true interests were in caring for people and attended the University of Victoria where she obtained her BA and Masters in clinical nursing. Through schooling and other professional development over her twenty years of nursing, she has come to be a rural nursing researcher and in nursing education, as clinical faculty with the University of Northern British Columbia’s MScN-Family Nurse Practitioner Program. She is also a NP OSCE Exam Consultant with CRNBC and shows no signs of slowing down, unless to help someone of course. “I like working with people on the front line, being able to offer choices to people to improve their health by providing holistic care,” said Celia. “It’s hectic but rewarding and because I’m experienced its easy for me to bear the burden then if I was brand new.
