Kootenay Boundary youth who struggle with mental health issues now have a range of help that’s just a click away. The new KB Searchlight is a one stop web resource that streamlines support services for youngsters up to age 18, in all communities from Nakusp through the Slocan Valley to Trail, and southwest to the Grand Forks area through to Beaverdell. The link opens with a user-friendly map that is accessed by visiting kootenayfamilyplace.org and clicking on the KB Searchlight link. The website format is easyto-use and provides detailed regional information for service organizations that can help with child and youth health matters such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and substance use. All a person needs to do is click on his/her corresponding place of residence to highlight a multitude of services that range from hospital liaison phone numbers, regional family programs, Freedom Quest contacts, and early intervention programs. “We just want those families in Trail to know that the resource is there for them and that they are not alone,” said Rachel Schmidt, from the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice. “That’s our key message. Most of the time our families say they go to multiple agencies and have to tell their stories over and over again. Navigating services and help in one spot just makes it easier for
them and helps them through a crisis if that’s what is going on.” The project is a provincial initiative that launched last year through the Doctors of BC and Ministry of Health to address concerns about the lack of fluidity parents and health care providers experienced trying to access care for children with mental health illnesses. Locally, Kootenay Boundary Shared Care Committee teamed with the Interior Health Authority to break down communication barriers between the area’s service providers and practitioners and provide better continuity for available programs, including detailed contacts for youth and their families. “Ours is a unique perspective,” said Schmidt. “So far through Shared Care we’ve been able to pull all those people to the table, including physicians, because often the physicians aren’t there. That’s what makes this different – we have the doctors on board, and that’s exciting.” Dr. Lucinda Loukras, a Kootenay Boundary paediatric specialist, has been active on the committee for the last six months. “Timely action is often an important part of dealing with mental health issues,” she said. “This website will quickly direct people searching for help to the most appropriate resources in their home communities. It’s a resource for both the public and health care providers.” The KB Searchlight website is part of the province’s Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use collaborative that began last year.
The collaborative efforts of the various health care sectors has a goal to provide timely access to integrated mental health and substance use supports throughout B.C. Services are listed community by community throughout the West Kootenay to help families locate the help they need, including detailed information on agency contacts and hours; program types, wait times and referral protocols. common and can happen to anyone. Most of us will either struggle with a mental health challenge ourselves, or will know someone who is affected by one at some point in our lifetime. Up to 7 per cent of mental illnesses begin before the age of 18. In BC 14 per cent to 20 per cent of youth are currently experiencing or will experience mental illness. It is not your fault! Early detection and treatment can help.

Participation by women down in local elections GreG Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Fewer women are running for office in West Kootenay/Boundary this year than in 2011, both in actual numbers and as a percentage of overall candidates. In 2011, 94 women sought positions — ten for mayor, 48 for councillor, seven for regional director, and 29 for school trustee, representing about 42 per cent of all candidates. This year there are 86 women running — 11 for mayor, 41 for councillor, nine for regional director, and 24 for school trustee, which is about 36 per cent of the total. Grand Forks has the most women running with ten, and also had the greatest increase over 2011, when it had six. Midway and Warfield have the fewest with one each. The greatest decreases over 2011 are in Kaslo, Nelson, and Rossland, where three fewer women are running. In 2011, five women
were acclaimed or elected mayors of their communities, the most there have ever been at once. After next month’s election, there will be a minimum of four and a maximum of eight. New Denver mayor Ann Bunka and Fruitvale mayor Patricia Cecchini have both been acclaimed to second terms, while in Rossland and Slocan, both mayoral candidates are women. Two women are also running for mayor in Grand Forks, and one each in Kaslo, Nakusp, and Nelson. Should Deb Kozak be elected in Nelson, she’ll be the city’s first female mayor in its 117 years. Trail and Warfield have never elected women as mayors either. Trail, in fact, has only ever had one woman seek the position — in 1922, when Doris Robinson put her name forward and finished third. At the regional district level, nine women are running this year compared to seven in 2011, and across the four school districts, 24 women are seeking trusteeships, compared to 29 in 2011.

An interesting historical footnote, at one time (in the late 19th century, Edison was a community of Utopian Socialists known as the Equality Colony). Not sure if I’ll ever get completely comfortable with the central instrument panel in a Prius. A switch button on the dash that changed kilometres to miles, however, was brilliantly simple and perfect for this trip. My biggest beef with the Prius v was cabin road noise at high speeds. Depending on the highway surface it can be so loud that it’s hard to converse with a front passenger. Bigger and better, the Prius v offers the functionality and versatility of a wagon, for a relatively small price premium. Toyota’s tried and trusted Hybrid Synergy Drive system offers outstanding fuel economy and surprisingly good power, when needed.

Heading out on the Altimate Rogue Trip By Keith Morgan
Driving all 3,945 kilometres of the famous Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica has always been on my bucket list. However, I’m hoping that after enduring a week on that often rocky and rough road that it will not be the last of my ever expanding must-do-before-I-die list! On Saturday, November 1, I head to Chicago for a route briefing and meeting with Gary Fleshman, who has driven the route more than 100 times. I am one of 14 journalists from across Canada participating in the drive staged by Nissan Canada to launch the 2015 versions of the Altima sedan and Rogue sport ute. Interestingly, a few people plan to do only half of the journey . . . seems to me that’s like climbing half way

We’ll pass through Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Along the way, we will visit many locations and attractions made famous through Hollywood and many a TV documentary, not to mention dozens of life-on-the-road books. Personally, I’m looking forward to spotting the roadside ghost towns that inspired the Cars movies, who said they’re just for kids? And in New Mexico and Arizona my eyes will be scanning for locations featured in the Breaking Bad TV series. We’re camping under the stars in the Grand Canyon. Sheesh! “best prof ever” peppered throughout the reviews on Rate my Professor, UBC’s physics/engineering Prof Dr. Andre Marziali clearly scores top marks from his students. However, his rave reviews extend beyond the walls of academia to the pavement of the Pacific Traffic Education Centre (PTEC), abutting the Pitt Meadows Airport. As part of the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), PTEC is a driver-training facility for police and other first responders. It’s also where the UBC Sports Car Club, established in 1956, holds its Autocross 101 training programs. This is where you’ll find Professor Marziali providing drivers new to the sport with science-based racing theory before riding shotgun with them to deliver one-on-one in-car training. Autocross racing is a
endeavour in which drivers race the clock for bragging rights, not each other. The course is generally confined to a large paved parking lot, or in this case, the massive pad of asphalt belonging to the JIBC’s PTEC. Bright orange cones laidout to create a circuitous web of challenging segments that flow from one to the other, and include such elements as offset gates, diminishing radius turns, long sweeping turns, G-circles, and the ever-popular inline slalom, define the course. While speed plays a role in the competition, science and driving ability carry the day. Understanding the limitations of tire grip and the physics of momentum and inertia help a driver anticipate and manage the effects of understeer and oversteer. As world-champion rally racer Colin McRae once said, “straight roads are for

to drive equally as well as a driver in a Honda Civic to score similar points. The reality is that most drivers race cars that are largely stock street-legal vehicles, which also serve as their daily driver. Most legitimate sports car clubs provide driver training opportunities for autocross racing, and in some cases driver-training on a bona fide race track. The UBC Sports Car Club generally holds two Autocross 101 programs per year.
I recently attended the endof-summer session held at the PTEC facility. My 19-year old son Austin was invited to participate, which he eagerly did using a 2015 Scion FR-S graciously supplied by Toyota Canada. The class consisted of 19 drivers, three of them female. Ages ran the gamut from fresh-face teenagers to empty nesters with newfound vitality and wheels to match.

Autocross 101 Training with the UBC Sports Car Club continued from page A6
The UBC Sports Car Club driving instructors are all exceptionally talented, capable, and safety minded. A ratio of two students per instructor ensures that everyone is given personal instruction specific to their needs and ability. Austin and Jordan – a 4th year UBC student of mechanical engineering, driving his modified 70s Datsun 510 – were assigned to Professor Marziali for the day. A patch of clean pavement served as a chalkboard for our high-revving prof as he led his students through the physics of cornering and the inherent limitations of the four small contact-patches uniting road and vehicle. After students walked and analyzed the course with their respective instructors, the outdoor classroom was traded for the car. With instructors seated next to them, students lined-up in pre-grid to await the green light that would launch their inaugural run through the auto-

cross course. With the use of sophisticated electronic timing, every hundredth of a second was accurately captured as the each driver made three runs through the course; the fastest serving as a baseline to measure improvement against. With baseline times established, the course was broken into its essential
elements of a slalom line, a G-circle, a series of offset gates, and a diminishing-radius sweeper. Supported by coaching from their respective instructors, students spent the better part of the day perfecting their skills at all four stations. In the afternoon, each student made four timed-runs of the complete
course. Each improved upon their baseline by significant margins, some dropping from the 40 and 50-second range to the thirties and forties while others – such as Jordan – cracked the barrier in the high 20s. Austin, who has benefitted from similar advanced driver training in the past dropped from 33.73 seconds to 30.22 seconds.
While the day was filled with fun and excitement, it also served a greater purpose by developing driving skills that are completely transferrable to the street. In effect, making each student a better, safer driver. More information on Autocross 101 can be found at: www.ubcscc.com

Jeep blazed a trail or now booming accessory business By Ian Harwood
It’s fitting that there should be such a thing as a Jeep Trailblazer. But it’s not the aforementioned vehicle that I’m writing about today, rather the accessory range that adorn so many Jeeps today. The truth is that Jeep trailblazed what is now a booming accessory business for all makes and models of trucks. Smittybilt has been around for years and it has a lot to offer in the way of
Jeep add-ons. An XRC front bumper is available to fit Jeeps from 1976-2014, manufactured from 3/16” cold roll steel. The XRC bumper is formed to manouevre your Jeep over obstacles such as those large boulders that seem to jump out at you at every turn. There is a built in winch plate that can accept up to a 10,000lb winch. Painted in a matte black powder coated finish and features a five year warranty. Cost is $515.99. There is also a matching
rear bumper that has a built in tire carrier. This carrier can handle up to a 37” tall tire and is also matte black. It has a class three trailer hitch and d-ring mounts welded inside and out. This costs $337.79. XRC rock sliders are ideal for rock crawling; they protect the side of your Jeep from unwanted body damage and cost $368.59. Armor corner guards provide a larger wheel well opening and feature a fender flare and fuel filler door. SRC tu-
bular doors replace the factory doors and bolt up to the factory door hinges, a very easy install. $368. Roof racks are another popular item for Jeeps especially with the limited space. The SRC rack has removable cross bars for easy soft or hard top removable and is designed to work with Thule or Yakima roof rack accessories. It can hold up to 300 lbs and its contoured design flows well with the jeeps body lines. The cost is $429. continued on page A11

Interior soft good items are available to attach to the factory roll-cage and can hold a variety of items such as cellphones, flashlights, fire extinguishers, and even a bottle of water. Smittybilt also offers a centre console that has a security compartment and additional cup holders. This console is $110.00. There is a full line of trail equipment available. A clinometer that can be mounted on the dash and
show you what angle you are on, side to side and front to back. It features a cool picture of a jeep in the dials. Cost is $24.59. A Trail jack is a very useful item to take with you into the back country. It is rated up to 4660 lbs and is constructed of solid cast steel that is powder coated. $92.19. Recovery straps are another valuable item to have and are available in 2x20, 2x30, and 3x30 feet lengths. They range in price from $24.59 to $49.19. The Recovery utility
tool is a collapsible shovel that is very similar to the ones used in the military; it features two serrated edges for cutting and digging. Fully extended it is 26 inches long and collapsed is 9 inches, an easy item to pack and a great tool to carry with you. Cost is $20.89. For more information on any of these products or other products I have not mentioned, go to www. smittybilt.com. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Nissan has created the world’s biggest working Zorb, complete with a full-sized Note safely cushioned inside. The giant inflatable ball, which measures six metres in diameter and more than 18 metres in circumference, was constructed to highlight Nissan’s Safety Shield technology featured on the Note, its popular small family car. Nicknamed the ‘CarZorb’, the colossal structure was successfully rolled down a course of steep hills in a two-minute film (YouTube – search Nissan Zorb). Originating in New Zealand, Zorbing sees thrill seekers roll downhill inside an orb, made of strong wearing inflatable plastic. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
