Nothing was hidden from the public and costs will remain the same, says Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin, in response to a report purporting major cost overruns on the Johnson Street Bridge project. Engineer William Doyle released a report Wednesday stating the true cost of the bridge would be between $104 million and $110 million, as opposed to the current
$92.8 million budget. Doyle formulated the report based solely on publicly available information from victoria.ca and johnsonstreetbridge.com. “This has been the most publicly reported project we’ve ever had,” said Fortin. A few weeks before the report came out, Doyle approached mayoral candidate Ida Chong to provide her with his summary findings about the cost of the bridge. According to both Chong and Doyle, Doyle was not com-
missioned to write the report and was not paid for it. Doyle moved to B.C. less than six months ago and is a Langford resident. He is ineligible to vote in the Victoria civic election. “As the campaign was underway, it started to irritate me that the available information and the final figure for the project were still not being discussed,” said Doyle. Gang associates face drug, firearms charges Two men with Lower Mainland gang ties have been arrested by police on gun- and drugrelated charges. Isaac Drennnan, 32, was arrested Oct. 9 at his Esquimalt home, where officers seized heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and two handguns. B.C.’s anti-gang police unit, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C., says Drennan’s alleged possession of firearms contravenes a lifetime prohibition that followed his conviction for the 2003 attempted murder of two New Westminster police officers. The two officers were shot, one in the leg and one in his body armour, when they arrived at a shots fired call where Drennan was barricaded in a house.

Drugs and a semi-automatic handgun seized by police from an Esquimalt home earlier this month. Dustin Wadsworth, a 32-year-old associate of Drennan’s, was also arrested with several ounces of cocaine on Oct. 22 at his 3500-block
Turner Street home in Vancouver. Police also seized $58,000 in cash, 100 ecstasy tablets, cutting agent and scales for weighing drugs. Wadsworth and Drennan both faces drug trafficking charges, while Drennan also face three counts related to illegal firearm possession. “Drugs, guns, and two very prominent drugtraffickers, both with longtime associations to gangs and with violent criminal pasts, were taken off the streets due to the tremendous hard work and dedication by the police officers from a number of law enforcement agencies,” said CFSEU-BC Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, crediting the work of Victoria and Vancouver police. editor@vicnews.com
Island Health braces for winter flu season Health authority orders 268,700 doses of vaccine in anticipation of flu season Kevin Laird Victoria News
Island Health is gearing up for the flu season, and expects more people than ever to get vaccinated this year. The health authority has ordered 268,700 doses of flu vaccine this year, up 25,750 doses from last year. Pharmacies and doctors’ offices have also ordered vaccine. Last year the province faced a shortage of flu vaccine. “Planning ahead and getting your flu shot early is an important way to protect yourself and the people in your life who are vulnerable to complications from influenza,” said Dr. Dee Hoyano, medical health officer for Island Health. Physicians, pharmacists and Island Health Public Health units will be providing free flu shots to people at high risk of complications from influenza and their close contacts as well as other eligible groups in communities across the Island. Free immunization clinics offered by Island Health begin next week. Those who are not eligible for the
free vaccine are encouraged to get vaccinated by their family physician or pharmacist for a nominal cost. Last week, Island Health began immunizing health-care workers. In 2013, more than 70 per cent of health-care workers on the Island received a flu shot. Sarah Plank, Island Health media manager, said the health authority hopes to increase the immunization rate among health-care workers and the general public. Getting more people immunized would help already busy hospitals from being overloaded during the flu season. “It can be a very serious illness and lead to death and hospitalization,” Plank said. “It puts a lot of pressure on our hospitals and emergency departments.” Flu season usually begins in December and runs through April, but there are some indications, the season could start earlier this year. For up to date information about Island Health’s Public Health flu clinic dates and times, residents are encouraged to go online to viha.ca/ flu.

Fortin said Doyle’s numbers are based on a request from the contractor, PCL Constructor Westcoast Inc., for an additional $7.8 million, which was rejected by the city. “It’s assuming that everything that’s been asked for is valid and is our responsibility to pay,” Fortin said. “[Doyle] is making a lot of assumptions.” He said any increased costs
will not be borne by the city or its residents. “Whether the cost of concrete goes up or goes down, that’s the responsibility of the contractor. Whether the cost of steel goes up or down, that’s the responsibility of the contractor, said Fortin. “The budget remains the same, the cost to local residents remains the same.” However, Victoria mayoral candidate Stephen Andrew does

Esquimalt candidates tackle environment election!
’14
Andrea Peacock Victoria News
Esquimalt residents made it made it clear at an environment-focused all-candidates meeting Tuesday that sewage continues to be at the forefront of their minds.
The recipient of the majority of sewage treatment plant questions was mayoral candidate John Ducker, regarding his competency and knowledge of the issue. “I don’t have enough background in terms of understanding the engineering,” said Ducker. “I’m trying to learn a lot of this as I go along.” Ducker said his main priority with the sewage plant is getting the best deal for
Esquimalt taxpayers, and he will be open to all options. He clarified that McLoughlin Point, Macaulay Point and Viewfield Road are off the table. Ducker expressed concern about the possibility of future lawsuits, and asked how much the public would be willing to pay in that situation. “We also have to consider the potential effect of lawsuits from other municipalities and how far we will go
to defend ourselves on that. If the province orders it, are we going to take them to court up to the Supreme Court of Canada and spend money on lawyers to do that? This thing should not be at all costs,” said Ducker. Esquimalt council candidate Susan Low said she does not think it is fair for the township to have to choose between economic and environmental aspects of sewage treatment. “The fact that we’re here
is the sign that we’ve been victim of a very flawed process in getting us to this point at the CRD,” said Low. “Had the CRD properly consulted and had they kept an open mind to alternative technology and alternative sites, we would probably have a tertiary decentralized system under construction.” Council candidate Tim Morrison said the municipalities in the CRD need to stop fighting about where
to put the sewage treatment plant in order to move forward. “It’s something we have to do as a region.” Mayor Barb Desjardins said the plant should be put somewhere that will serve as a benefit. “In order to take advantage of the water resource, the water reclamation, you have to site something where there is going to be a market for that.” andrea.peacock@vicnews.com

Right now, there are about 1,700 people in Victoria living with chronic kidney disease, and more than 200 in need of a kidney transplant. Many will die waiting. “Every community in B.C. shares a similar story of needing more kidneys than there are available for transplant,” says Karen Philp, executive director, The Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C. Branch. “The research shows 95 per cent of British Columbians support the idea of donating a kidney to someone in need, but only 19 per
cent are actually registered on B.C.’s organ donor registry. We want to change this story and invite the public to join the conversation.” The Victoria Community Conversation will be held Tuesday (Nov. 4) at 6 p.m., at the Embassy Inn Hotel on Menzies Street. Members of the public are invited to share their thoughts and experiences, as well as hear from special guest speakers and health care experts about the impact of kidney disease in the community. Ken Merkley, who
received a kidney transplant from his daughter, is the host of the Community Conversation in Victoria. “The community conversation is important because all British Columbians need to be aware of the problem and what they can do to assist in reducing wait times for kidney patients needing a transplant. Please register to be an organ donor with B.C. Trans-
plant and consider becoming a living kidney donor for a loved one, acquaintance, or even a stranger.” Throughout the province, The Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C. Branch, is hosting 12 Community Conversations to ask people to help identify the barriers that stop people from registering as organ donors as well as the solutions to increase the number of
people receiving a kidney transplant in their community. The Kidney Foundation is committed to increasing kidney transplant rates by 50 per cent over the next five years. This conversation is the first step towards this goal. For more information, please call 604736-9775 or visit the foundation’s website at kidney.bc.ca. editor@vicnews.com
DEPRESSION Did you know about 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men will suffer from depression at some point in life. Depression in children and adolescents occurs less commonly than in adults. Almost 1.5 million Canadians have serious depression at any given time, but less than onethird of these people seek medical help.
What is depression?
Sadness or downswings in mood are normal reactions to life’s struggles, setbacks, and disappointments. Many people use the word “depression” to explain these kinds of feelings, but depression is much more than just sadness. Some people describe depression as “living in a black hole” or having a feeling of impending doom. However, some depressed people don’t feel sad at all—they may feel lifeless, empty, and apathetic, or men in particular may even feel angry, aggressive, and restless. Whatever the symptoms, depression is different from normal sadness in that it engulfs your day-to-day life, interfering with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and have fun. The feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness are intense and unrelenting, with little, if any, relief.

OUR VIEW
Lessons from Ottawa shooting There are three lessons to take away from last week shootings on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The first one – one that played out in front of radio listeners and TV viewers throughout the day – is not to over-react. After Michael ZehafBibeau shot Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and made a beeline for the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, those tasked with security there did their duty. They tried to stop him at the main entrance. They followed the man as he headed down the Hall of Honour and continued to exchange gunfire with him. Finally, Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers was able to fire at him and bring him down. The media coverage of the events of the day was ongoing, but it was not filled with overreactions. Instead, it was done in a moderate tone, with facts relayed as they became available. The only portion which may have been overdone was constant replaying of the grainy video, taken on a cellphone by a Globe and Mail reporter, of the actual shooting. That provided context and sound effects and was very effective. An investigation is underway, and it includes a detailed look at a video the shooter left behind. The federal government needs to take the same approach – move slowly and not over-react. The second lesson is that there is clearly a need for better security at the Parliament Buildings. Part of this may be due to a variety of forces being responsible for various aspects of security, but access to Parliament through the front door is too easy. The third lesson is the need for all political parties to co-operate more often, as shown in Thursday’s extraordinary actions in the House of Commons. Parties can and should disagree – but they can also agree on many measures to make Canada safer and fight this new type of “lone wolf” terrorism. Canadians would greatly appreciate a parliament that works for them, not just for partisan advantage. What do you think? Give us your comments by email: editor@vicnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. ‘Selfish Gene’ rules us Re: Trash in doorways leave merchants fuming (News, Oct. 17) and People over pet animals (Opinion, Oct. 17) It is all about the famous human characteristics of the ‘Selfish Gene’. We say, and the politicians say, that we care about certain areas of downtown Victoria and to a certain extent we do, but at the same time we don’t. For instance, I live and work in the famous Pandora 900 block and for years fought city council and the police to normalize my block, and I must say there has been a great improvement in the last two years. When the Rock Bay homeless shelter opened, half the drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes moved down there to terrorize the local inhabitants. The Selfish Gene reared its head and I was pleased it was no longer in my backyard. Notice I did not mention the ordinary homeless or mentally sick who are in quite a different category. We do have a serious problem downtown and nobody wants to deal with it. Before Rock Bay opened Our Place Society was feeding X numbers of individuals. That number has not gone down but has increased after the opening of Rock Bay. That tells us that hundreds of individuals are coming from the other provinces, as they see it as a Garden of Eden. So, what do we care about in
Victoria? Well there are the rabbits at the University of Victoria. There are the hundreds of Bambis ruining our precious gardens, and God help anyone that is cruel to a dog unless it has relatives in West Africa. Anthony Mathews Victoria
Local support made James Bay book possible Re: Photo calendar celebrates James Bay (News, Oct. 22) Thank you to Jennifer Blyth for the well-written article about my art and photography project expressing my love for the natural beauty of James Bay. I am pleased that it mentioned the local support that made this book-calendar of photos and designs possible. The article did not mention the title of my work so I wish to add that here: The Rapture of James Bay. Also, the actual name of the agency that provided me with the bursary to cover publishing costs is the Victoria Women in Need Community Cooperative (womeninneed.ca), not Women in Need Society. They offer many wonderful services to local women – clothing and furniture to women in crisis, personal development workshops, self-sufficiency programs and more. Doreen Marion Gee Victoria
City street sweeper needs car-free roads Seeing the massive collection of soggy leaves on our streets, I am reminded of the amazing performance of the city’s street sweeper, just before the Goodlife Victoria Marathon runners came down our street. There were no parked cars and in one swoop it swept it totally bare. I can’t help but think that when there are parked cars and the street sweeper is mostly in the middle of the road, it’s a total waste of money. I know that there are schemes requiring no parking at night periodically in any given area. It may be a small inconvenience for drivers, but it would make a huge difference for efficient street sweeping. I think that Victoria should go “back to the drawing board” and resurrect such a plan. Robert McInnes Victoria

Dad, daughter communicate with sign language Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre a resource for single-parent family Andrea Peacock Victoria News
James Weckend enjoys finding new ways to be a better father to his four-year-old daughter, just like most parents. The only difference is Weckend and his daughter communicate using American Sign Language, because Weckend is deaf. “ASL is a true language; it’s not signed English. We can communicate like anyone else,” said Weckend. Weckend uses the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre to get support, specifically on parenting and improving his daughter’s sign language through lessons from Susanne Harnden, community outreach worker. “Susanne is able to do the actual teaching of sign language adapted to the child, and help me and support me
in terms of how to do that,” said Weckend. “And it gives me creative ideas in terms of how to approach my daughter and how to use the sign language and incorporate that into her life as well.” While Weckend is the only deaf person in his family, he said they all are able to sign, so communication is not a problem. Over his life, people outside his family have also been inspired to learn sign language because of Weckend, including neighbourhood kids and their parents when he was a child. “All those kids were learning sign language as my parents were learning sign language and teaching me sign language,” said Weckend. Weckend grew up in Victoria, where he also took all of his schooling,
James Weckend … ASL true language except for two years of high school, which he did in Vancouver at an integrated program for deaf and hearing children. “I’d be there for the week then come home on the weekends,” said Weckend. After two years, he decided to return to Victoria to an integrated program at Belmont Secondary School. “There was an interpreter present in the classroom,” said Weckend. Now Weckend works at Thrifty Foods, where he has been for the last 16 years. Besides talking on the phone, Weckend said
there really isn’t anything he can’t do. “Technology has made it very much a level playing field,” said Weckend. “We can text, we can email from our devices, and now, of course, we have Facetime.” Weckend said he is still in contact with a variety of friends, both deaf and hearing. He said his friends are often surprised at how well his daughter can communicate using ASL. “My friends do sign well, but because they’re not with me all the time, they’re not getting that exposure and my daughter of course is,” said Weckend. “So now she’s starting to teach my friends too; it’s really cool.” Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre provides support for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to make them equal in their community, said Lundie Russell, coordinator of IDHHC’s family and community program. “We’re the only agency on the Island
that provides the services we do to the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Russell. Being a non-profit agency, IDHHC relies on donations to keep running. Coming up in November is IDHHC’s only fundraiser, Big Band Bash, which is a concert consisting of
swing and jazz music and dancing. “It’s a night out for people to enjoy some really good, live music,” said Russell. There will also be a silent auction and a live auction. “Last year was really successful, so we’re hoping this year will be just as successful if not more,” said Russell. This

Night at museum brings spirited fun Royal B.C. Museum hosts spooky Halloween event tonight Jennifer Blyth Victoria News
For a Halloween event with the grown-ups in mind, the Royal B.C. Museum serves up a spirited evening of activities related to living – and dying – more than a century ago. Returning tonight (Friday) for its second year, Night Shift: Living and Dying in Victorian Times takes visitors back more than 100 years with eerie entertainment, plus drinks, live music and fun activities. Inspired by archival records and the human history collection, the evening
will awaken the spirits of the past as 19th century mourners, mystics, fortunetellers and others stroll the streets of Old Town, says Kim Gough, adult learning team lead at the Royal B.C. Museum. “We wanted the activities to be related to the exhibits, so in Old Town we’re looking at Victorian-era themes,” Gough says. As a free-flowing evening without scheduled activities, “you choose your own adventure.” A review of sources like the Daily Colonist didn’t reveal a lot about Halloween celebrations in Victorian Victoria, but the season was widely regarded as a time when spirits were
believed to be near, by people who were deeply interested in things like mourning rituals and the afterlife. “It was a time of year people thought spirits were pretty close to the Earth,” Gough says, noting adults living at the time would likely have lost their parents, siblings, friends and often even children, meaning they had a special interest in what happened to souls once they passed on, Gough explains. “So Victorians did have a lot of really interesting curiosity about the afterlife.” Museum guests can learn how to make a memento mori brooch from hair and interact with two women who will be dressed in full
and half-mourning attire and will answer questions about the rituals of mourning. But the physical implications of death weren’t the only things captivating people’s minds at the time. “Because of Victorians’ interest in the afterlife, they were also very interested in séances,” Gough notes. However, that same interest also sparked many charlatans who took advantage of people’s beliefs through a variety of ruses and tricks. “Our séance people may fall into more of that side of the paradigm,” she hints. After summoning spirits at a Victorian séance, guests can let the lovelorn fortune teller help them find true love through traditional Halloween games and activities or pay tribute to the departed at a wake with a procession led by the eclectic musical ensemble Bu’an Bu’an, playing
throughout the evening. In the Modern History Gallery guests will hear stories of murder, tragedy and woe found in archival B.C. Coroners’ reports. “It just gets creepier and creepier,” Gough promises, recalling the 1864 murder of “hurdy-gurdy girl” Everina Rice – the first female murdered in the Gold Rush town of Barkerville. Smothered in her own bed, no killer was ever found, Gough says. Then there was the sad tale of Sophie Cameron, one of the few women who joined her husband during the Cariboo gold rush, only to die of typhoid. Before dying, Sophie implored her husband to bury her back in Ontario, a promise that brought challenges such as transportation (including a toboggan), a tin coffin filled with alcohol for preservation, and several disinterments, including one very
public occasion in front a large crowd to confirm death from natural causes. “According to reports, she was in a wonderful state of preservation,” Gough says. And for something completely different, the Majestic Theatre will screen the 1920s German vampire movie Nosferatu, with live musical accompaniment by jazz musician Patrick Boyle. Night Shift: Living and Dying in Victorian Times welcomes ghouls and guests age 19+ (photo ID required) from 8 to 11 p.m. on the third floor of the Royal B.C. Museum only (Admission to Vikings is not included). Tickets are $30, with a 10-per-cent-discount for members, available in advance at royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/events/nightshift-living-and-dying-againin-victorian-times/ or call 250-356-7226. Drinks will be available for purchase. editor@vicnews.com
Leaf it on the Boulevard
Two hours of your time could save a life. Join in a Community Conversation! Tuesday, November 4th from 6p.m. to 8p.m. Embassy Inn Hotel 520 Menzies Street, Victoria Ken Merkley received a kidney from his daughter Christina.
Right now there are 206 people in Victoria who need a life-saving kidney transplant. By participating in a Community Conversation organized by The Kidney Foundation of Canada (BC Branch), you could help save the life of a British Columbian like Ken. How? By helping to identify barriers that stop people from registering as organ donors, and generating ideas to increase kidney transplants in our community.
Victoria residents have two options for leaf collection: Scheduled Neighbourhood Leaf Collection
Bagged Leaves Call for Pick-up Service
The Residential Leaf Pick-up Schedule enables you to look up your neighbourhood’s deadline for placing leaves on the boulevard. Leaves can be placed in loose piles or in tied, clear 100% compostable bags. Neighbourhood leaf collection begins in November and ends in January.
From October 20 to December 19, residents can contact the Parks Division at 250.361.0600 to arrange for bagged leaves to be picked up from the boulevard within five working days at no additional charge. Bags must be tied, clear and 100% compostable.
There’s no limit to the number of compostable bags or leaf piles you can set out. Residents can purchase clear, 100% compostable bags 89 cm x 127 cm in size at City Hall and at the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre. A package of 15 bags is $12.50 plus tax. (These bags are larger than those the City sells for kitchen catchers.) The 2014 Residential Leaf Pick-up Schedule was mailed to residents and is available online.

While local area teens will find plenty to explore and experience at Saturday’s Coast Capital Savings TeenFest at Pearkes Recreation Centre, the eclectic entertainment line-up promises to be a highlight of the day. Running from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1, the free, one-day exhibition aims to connect teens, ’tweens and their families with each other, their communities and community leaders. Included will be more than 100 exhibitor booths, a mobile indoor skate park, fashion and beauty displays and entertainment – lots of entertainment. Local artists include 16-year-old Stelly’s student Tristan Thompson and Nanaimo hip hop artist Sirreal. Thompson, a fifthgeneration Victorian, started singing at age two – the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Californication and Other Side were favourites – before being captivated by the talents of Michael Jackson. During the summer of 2010, Thompson turned busker, taking his Michael Jackson performance to Victoria streets and since then has performed at events throughout the region, fueling his passion for singing. With Chatter Records Tristan recorded his first album at 15, has appeared on BT Toronto and YTV, and his song Tidal Wave is played on more than 60 stations in Canada and around the world.

An interesting historical footnote, at one time (in the late 19th century, Edison was a community of Utopian Socialists known as the Equality Colony). Not sure if I’ll ever get completely comfortable with the central instrument panel in a Prius. A switch button on the dash that changed kilometres to miles, however, was brilliantly simple and perfect for this trip. My biggest beef with the Prius v was cabin road noise at high speeds. Depending on the highway surface it can be so loud that it’s hard to converse with a front passenger. Bigger and better, the Prius v offers the functionality and versatility of a wagon, for a relatively small price premium. Toyota’s tried and trusted Hybrid Synergy Drive system offers outstanding fuel economy and surprisingly good power, when needed. Heading out Jeep blazed a trail for now booming accessory business on the Altimate Rogue Trip By Ian Harwood
It’s fitting that there should be such a thing as a Jeep Trailblazer. But it’s not the aforementioned vehicle that I’m writing about today, rather the accessory range that adorn so many Jeeps today. The truth is that Jeep trailblazed what is now a booming accessory business for all makes and models of trucks. Smittybilt has been around for years and it has a lot to offer in the way of Jeep add-ons. An XRC front bumper is available to fit Jeeps from 1976-2014, manufactured from 3/16” cold roll steel. The XRC bumper is formed to manouevre your Jeep over obstacles such as those large boulders that seem to jump out at you at every turn. There is a built in winch plate that can accept up to a 10,000lb winch. Painted in a matte black powder coated finish and features a five year warranty. Cost is $515.99.
There is also a matching rear bumper that has a built in tire carrier. This carrier can handle up to a 37” tall tire and is also matte black. It has a class three trailer hitch and d-ring mounts welded inside and out. This costs $337.79. XRC rock sliders are ideal for rock crawling; they protect the side of your Jeep from unwanted body damage and cost $368.59. Armor corner guards provide a larger wheel well opening and feature a fender flare and fuel filler door. SRC tubular doors replace the factory doors and bolt up to the factory door hinges, a very easy install. $368. Roof racks are another popular item for Jeeps especially with the limited space. The SRC rack has removable cross bars for easy soft or hard top removable and is designed to work with Thule or Yakima roof rack accessories. It can hold up to 300 lbs and its
contoured design flows well with the jeeps body lines. The cost is $429. Interior soft good items are available to attach to the factory roll-cage and can hold a variety of items such as cellphones, flashlights, fire extinguishers, and even a bottle of water. Smittybilt also offers a centre console that has a security compartment and additional cup holders. This console is $110.00. There is a full line of trail equipment available. A clinometer that can be mounted on the dash and show you what angle you are on, side to side and front to back. It features a cool picture of a jeep in the dials. Cost is $24.59. A Trail jack is a very useful item to take with you into the back country. It is rated up to 4660 lbs and is constructed of solid cast steel that is powder coated. $92.19. Recovery straps are another valuable item to have and are available in 2x20, 2x30, and 3x30 feet lengths.
They range in price from $24.59 to $49.19. The Recovery utility tool is a collapsible shovel that is very similar to the ones used in the military; it features two serrated edges for cutting and digging. Fully extended it is 26 inches long and collapsed is 9 inches, an

Driving all 3,945 kilometres of the famous Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica has always been on my bucket list. However, I’m hoping that after enduring a week on that often rocky and rough road that it will not be the last of my ever expanding must-dobefore-I-die list! On Saturday, November 1, I head to Chicago for a route briefing and meeting with Gary Fleshman, who has driven the route more than 100 times. I am one of 14 journalists from across Canada participating in the drive staged by Nissan Canada to launch the 2015 versions of the Altima sedan and Rogue sport ute. Interestingly, a few people plan to do only half of
the journey . . . seems to me that’s like climbing half way up Everest! The daily trek will range between 450 and 600 kilometres, getting us to California by the evening of Saturday, November 9. We’ll pass through Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Along the way, we will visit many locations and attractions made famous through Hollywood and many a TV documentary, not to mention dozens of life-on-the-road books. Personally, I’m looking forward to spotting the roadside ghost towns that inspired the Cars movies, who said they’re just for kids? And in New Mexico and Arizona my eyes will be scanning for locations featured in the Breaking Bad TV series. We’re camping under the stars in the Grand Canyon. Sheesh! The last time I was under canvas was about 25 years ago when I accompanied my son Niall to his Beaver camp. An overnight stay at the El Travatore Motel, in Bullhead City, AZ, where we
pick a theme room, quickly follows that chill night. Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe? Wonder if this drive was on their bucket list. The organizers suggested we swap partners part way across before fights break out. My drive buddy for four days will be Toronto Star scribe Mark Richardson. Second prize was eight days with my fellow Brit. Truth is neither of us will spoil another couple, well at least for four days. I’m currently watching as many episodes of the 1960s’ era Route 66 TV series as I can and digesting every story about music inspired by the highway. Of course, I’m making a compilation tape, I mean picking a playlist for my generic MP3 player. I will be sharing my adventures with Driveway readers during and after the trip. Blogging begins on drivewaybc.ca this coming weekend and a full report will appear in print and online in late November. Off to get my kicks on Route 66. Adios . . . for now. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

An electric luxury car designed to avert range anxiety By Zack Spencer
It is often lamented that many of the concept cars at the international auto shows never see the light of day as production vehicles. Well, the Cadillac ELR looks every bit like a futuristic concept and it is available today. This car is something to see, especially in person, with sweeping lines and aggressive front lights, like a spaceship. In fact it won the 2013 Eyes on Design Award at the North American International Auto Show, an award judged by all of the heads of design form each automaker in attendance… that’s some judging panel At first glance it has more than a passing resemblance to the Cadillac CTS Coupe but underneath is a very different platform.
Looks
This is essentially the Chevrolet Volt electric car, morphed into a Cadillac,
with two fewer doors. Taking what Cadillac learned from the CTS coupe and transplanting that look onto an electric car has made the ELR a high-end electric alternative, to say a Tesla. The two-door design has hidden electronic door handles that

release by touching a pad inside the recessed door handle. Not to worry, there is a redundant mechanical mechanism. The 20-inch wheels have specially designed tires for efficiency and handling. The trunk is a
good size for a small sporty coupe, but it is the front where all the jewelry is showcased. The headlamps are stunning to see during the day or at night. The vertical daytime running light are Cadillac’s signature now and they look fantastic. The LED headlamps along with rear LED lights make this a true luxury product.
Inside
The same futuristic and luxury approach continues on the inside. The materials used are spectacular, rich and welcoming. Cadillac combines alcantara (faux suede), chrome, wood, hand cut and sown leather seats and available carbon fibre. This combination of colours and textures, combined with the sweeping shape is first rate. This interior can stand on its own with any other luxury brand. Cadillac uses the same Cue infotainment and communications system throughout its line
of products and it features a rich graphics package with cutting edge connectivity. But this car isn’t without fault. The touch sensitive centre console isn’t for everyone; some might prefer traditional knobs and buttons and the high gloss surfaces can show dirt quickly. Then there is the back seat or lack of. This isn’t a four-seat car but a two-seater with storage for a gym bag. Why this has back seats is a mystery.
Drive
The Chevrolet Volt is the best selling electric car in Canada, not the Tesla or the Nissan LEAF. People have come to realize that the combination of electric range and a gasoline-extending generator is a good compromise; it isn’t all electric or nothing. The ELR, just like the Volt it is based on, is plugged in and charged, usually overnight. It takes
more than 12-hours on a typical 120V plug to get the job done or about five hours on a more powerful 240V system. Once charged, the car runs on electricity for about 65 km before the gasoline extender kicks in to allow the driver to run up to 480km, or longer, if the car is refueled. The 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the electric motor puts out 295 lb.-ft of torque to the front wheels, similar power to the Cadillac 3.6-litre gasoline engine used in other products. One way to extend the electric range is to use regenerative braking to help recharge the battery. The paddle shifters behind the steering wheel do that.
The driver can use these in combination with the regular brake to modulate driving. It takes practice but is kind of fun.
Verdict
Here is the part that is hard to swallow, the price. The ELR starts at $78,250-- lot of money for any car. This is a very limited market, a two-door sporty looking Cadillac that is also electric. If they made this into a sexy 4-door, the ELR would have more takers. As it stands, Telsa seems to have that market cornered for sexy and expensive electric cars. What the Cadillac has over the Tesla is a world-class interior, something Tesla

has fallen short on. On the flipside, Tesla has a huge available electric range without the aid of a gasoline engine. So the market for the ELR is limited. Marty the Marmot celebrates ninth birthday on Sunday
The Victoria Royals play a pair of Western Hockey League games against Western Conference rivals Tri-City Americans this weekend (Nov. 1 and 2) at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Sunday afternoon is Marty
the Marmot’s ninth birthday presented by Island Savings. Sunday’s game also marks the first Kirby’s Source for Sports’ Skate with the players after the game. Marty will be joined for the event by his mascot friends
including: Turbo (Harbour Air), Daisy the Cow (Island Farms), Sidney the Kidney (Kidney Foundation of Canada), Ace (Saanich PD), Santa Bear (CFAX Santas Anonymous), Cooper (Co-op Gas), Terry the Trader (Sports Trad-
ers), Harvey (Harbour Cats), Striker (Victoria Highlanders FC) and Rocky (Victoria Shamrocks). Game time Saturday is 7 p.m. The Sunday afternoon tilt goes at 1 p.m. editor@vicnews.com
James Nielsen Contributor
Victoria Highlanders’ women’s prospect squads went undefeated over the weekend, earning a draw and a victory against Victoria Athletics and Magnuson Ford SC. The Lower Island Women’s Soccer League’s Prospect women played arguably their best opening half of the season against Victoria Athletics, Oct. 25 at the University of Victoria. The Highlanders’ defense was on display throughout the match, as a focus by head coach Dave Dew on the defensive third of the pitch in practice paid dividends at match time in the scoreless draw. Former players under Dew highlighted the Athletics roster, including forward Moira Hood, a member of the UVic Vikes 2005 CIS Championship roster as well as Kate Hambleton. The experienced roster provided the Highlanders with a strong challenge in the match. Unfortunately the Highlanders were unable to finish on their offensive opportunities, battling to a 0-0 draw. In net Puck Lowes and Miranda Clarke split duties after Lowes suffered a game-ending injury in her first game in 12 months. Clarke performed admirably between the woodwork, making four saves on quality opportunities from Athletics. Sunday afternoon saw the Metro-Ford Women’s Soccer
League’s Highlanders Prospect squad notching a 2-1 victory against Magnuson Ford SC, Oct. 26, also at UVic. Holly Goodacre and Liz Hansen tallied for the Highlanders, while Steph Parker and Emily Moore split duties in net en route to the women’s third victory of the season.

Bubble Soccer is the newest sport craze and the Victoria Sport and Social Club will offer the first league of its kind on the Island. Players compete in soccer, following most of the traditional rules, with one major exception: they’re encouraged to knock their opponents to the ground. That’s because each player is encased in an inflated bubble from the knees up. Registration closes Monday (Nov. 3). To register, please go online to vssc.ca/register.
Victoria Highlanders’ men’s prospect soccer teams found success over the weekend, posting wins in their Division 2 and U-21 weekend games against Lakehill United and Nanaimo United FC, respectively. Division 2 Prospect Boys – Facing a previously undefeated Lakehill United squad, the Highlanders, put in a strong perfromace to win 1-0. Brian Im scored the game’s lone goal. U-21 Prospect Boys – The Highlanders U-21 squad earned a 4-2 victory against Nanaimo United FC, its fourth win of the season. Andre Earthy-Find scored twice while Charlie Miller and Dan Roke each contributed markers of their own for the Highlanders.
Goodacre opened scoring in the 18th minute of play after teammate London Veronica played an over-the-top ball that Goodacre did well to run onto. A half-volley strike put her side up 1-0 before the visitors then leveled the match off a converted free kick in the 26th minute. In her first game back with the Highlanders, Hansen scored the eventual game-winner just before the first half whistle blew, receiving a pass from teammate Erica Groten before putting the ball to the back of the net for the 2-1 lead. “It was a good game for us,” said Dew. “They just moved up to our league and feature a number of Trinity Western Spartan and Fraser Valley Cascade graduates. It adds another high-end team in the league for us to compete against.” A notable staple on Magnuson Ford’s roster included former Highlander Megan Webster, who featured on Victoria’s squad during their tenure in the W-League. Despite the visitor’s impressive roster, it was the Highlanders who would earn another strike in the win column, moving to 3-3-1 on the season. Victoria sits fourth in Premier Division table. Next up, the LIWSL squad faces off against Castaways FC, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m., while the MWSL square off against Westside FC ‘A’, Sunday (Nov. 2) at Hillcrest Park at 2 p.m.

Mason Street City Farm, a quarter-acre urban farm in downtown Victoria, is teaming up with Limbic Media to upgrade its technology and teach high-tech green job skills to Victoria high school students. The farm is known for innovative projects, like Victoria’s largest aquaponics greenhouse. The system grows fish and vegetables in a closed loop that conserves water and minimizes waste. Farm partners Angela Moran and Jesse Brown also offer a paid internship program to teach Victoria residents of modest means the necessary skills to run an urban farm or homestead. Their next one-of-a-kind project will have local high school stu-
dents from the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry build a networked remote control system for the aquaponics greenhouse. Limbic Media, a local interactive media and technology business, will work with the students to design and build controllers, and Mason Street Farm will teach them about aquaponics and sustainable urban agriculture techniques. “We’re so excited to work with these students on connecting technology and growing food,” said Angela Moran, who has been farming at Mason Street since 2006. “We’re in a time where urban agriculture and food sovereignty is more and more important, but a lot of young people don’t see farming
as a viable job.” Added Manjinder Benning, Limbic Media’s director: “I can’t wait to see what the students come up with. They’ll learn high-tech engineering, product design, and client service skills, but for a lot of them growing food is also a new skill. Thinking through practical applications for technical skills is the best learning environment.” To fund this and other educational programs at the farm, Mason Street Farm and the Island Chefs Collaborative are hosting a “farmraiser” called Boots ‘n Suits — a five-course feast from the fields by Victoria’s top chefs, with local alcohol pairings, and a live flamenco performance.
The event will be held Nov. 14 at the White Eagle Hall in James Bay. Ticket information is atbootsnsuits2014.eventbrite.ca. Guests are encouraged to wear gumboots along with their best evening wear. “Victoria is hungry for more local, sustainably raised food, and this is as local and sustainable as it gets,” said farmer Jesse Brown. “We are growing food blocks for the restaurants and markets that buy it, and doing so in less space with less resources than most people think is possible. We’re looking forward to growing our job training programs next year to provide even more value to the community.” editor@vicnews.com

Bug Zoo helping out children’s cancer charity Andrea Peacock Victoria News
Through the donation of two days’ worth of admission fees, the Victoria Bug Zoo raised $1,400 for the B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents’ Association. The money will go specifically to the association’s family support program, which targets emergency needs for families with children with cancer. Family support initiatives include programs such as the
Comfy Kids program, which helps get kids safely and comfortably to medical appointments. “For all those people to come through the door and to have their donations go to the family support program is amazing,” said Susan Kerr, patient and family liaison with the B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents’ Association. “And for them to know that this is a true need in our community is just as important as the donations themselves.” andrea.peacock@vicnews.com

Regular upkeep maintains home value Laura Lavin Black Press
Every homeowner knows the learning curve is never ending when you own your own home. Along with washing the dishes and sweeping the floor come routine maintenance tasks and minor repairs that occur both seasonally and when you least expect it. We’ve compiled a Top 10 list of around the house chores and trouble shooting ideas that every homeowner should know. Clean gutters: Leaves, pine needles and other debris will clog your gutters routinely and keeping them clear will help keep rain off your roof and drain it away from your house. Clean your gutters twice a year or more frequently if you have overhanging trees and after a wind storm. Use a sturdy ladder and place it on a firm, level base. Protect your hands with work gloves and use a small trowel to help scoop debris out of the gutter working away from the drain. To keep things tidy, use a bucket to scoop the leaves into. Then use a hose to clean out each section of gutter. Finally, make sure your drainpipes are clear. Use a hose or plumber’s snake to push out any clogs. Find a wall stud: Hanging heavy items inside means using the strongest part of your wall – the stud. The easiest way is to use an electronic stud finder, but when you don’t have

Most electrical outlets are fastened to the side of a stud, so check beside or within an inch of the outlet. Most studs are 16 inches apart, so use a small drill bit or nail and drill in just above the baseboard to make sure you’re on target. Unclog a toilet: The first step to unclogging the toilet is to make sure you have the right plunger. Purchase an accordion plunger, which is better suited to the task than a cup plunger. If the water is about to overflow
the bowl, remove the top of the tank and close the flap at the bottom of the tank. Remove excess water from the bowl if necessary. Warm the rubber of the plunger under hot running water before placing it over the toilet drain, allowing water into the plunger. Once it’s sealed around the hole plunge up and down a few times, keeping the plunger as vertical as possible. Change a furnace filter: On most furnaces the filter will be adjacent to the furnace. The filter box may be covered by a small

door, or the filter itself will be visible inside a notch that it slides into. Pull the old filter out and discard it. Look on the new filter for airflow arrows that are printed along the sides of the filter. These arrows are always meant to point in the direction of the airflow. Slide the furnace filter into the filter air box with the arrows pointing toward the furnace. Remove a broken light bulb: First make sure the power is off or the lamp is unplugged. Wear gloves and eye protection to ward

off broken glass, then, using a pair of needlenose pliers, grip the metal edge of the base and start turning counter-clockwise. The base may split and break off before the base turns. If this happens, drop it in the garbage and start on a new piece of the base. Alternatively, A raw potato, cut in half pushed firmly over the filament and into the base can be used to twist the bulb loose. Competitive hybrid son and, further on, this road also takes you to Samish drive systems now use lithium-ion battery technology, Island. but this battery has proven to be very reliable. A recommended stop in Edison is the Breadfarm, A downside to being a bigger Prius, the V is also a where you can buy a hearty Chuckanut Multigrain little heavier, which impacts fuel consumption, but not Loaf. This family run business makes baked goods by much. Using the revised (2015) fuel consumption from scratch and in small batches using old fashioned rating method it gets 5.3 L/100km in the city and 5.8 techniques and organic ingredients. The fresh baked L/100km on the highway. I averaged 5.5 L/100km smells are intoxicating and the taste ... divine!
Keith Morgan writes this week about his forthcoming drive of the legendary Route 66 in the States from Chicago to Santa Monica. Is there a long drive you have always wanted to do?
‘‘

ROUTE US
An interesting historical footnote, at one time (in the late 19th century, Edison was a community of Utopian Socialists known as the Equality Colony). The Specs – 2014 Toyota Prius v Price: $27,480 to $37,175 Power: 1.8L I4 & 60 kw motor, 134 horsepower (combined). Transmission: CVT automatic Fuel consumption: 4.3/4.8 L/100 km (city/highway)

Fully extended it is 26 inches long and collapsed is 9 inches, an

easy item to pack and a great tool to carry with you. Cost is $20.89. For more information on any of these products or other products I have not mentioned, go to www. smittybilt.com. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca
By Keith Morgan
Adios . . . for now. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

has fallen short on. On the flipside, Tesla has a huge available electric range without the aid of a gasoline engine. So the market for the ELR is limited. If you are in the market for a two door futuristic ready to drive concept car, this one is very well executed; it turns heads everywhere it goes. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca

Autocross 101 – Training with the UBC Sports Car Club Austin Rothwell and his driving instructor, Dr. Andre Marziali – a physics/engineering prof at UBC, pose for a quick photo at the end of an exciting day of octane-fuelled learning.

capable, and safety minded. A ratio of two students per instructor ensures that everyone is given personal instruction specific to their needs and ability. Austin and Jordan – a 4th year UBC student of mechanical engineering, driving his modified 70s Datsun 510 – were assigned to Professor Marziali for the day. A patch of clean pavement served as a chalkboard for our high-revving prof as he led his students through the physics of cornering and the inherent limitations of the four small contact-patches uniting road and vehicle. After students walked and analyzed the course with their respective instructors, the outdoor classroom was traded for the car.

Octane-fuelled learning crosses age and gender boundaries With comments such as “amazingly passionate” and “best prof ever” peppered throughout the reviews on Rate my Professor, UBC’s physics/ engineering Prof Dr. Andre Marziali clearly scores top marks from his students. However, his rave reviews extend beyond the walls of academia to the pavement of the Pacific Traffic Education Centre (PTEC), abutting the Pitt Meadows Airport. As part of the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), PTEC is a driver-training facility for police and other first responders. It’s also where the UBC Sports Car Club, established in 1956, holds its Autocross 101 training programs. This is where you’ll find Professor Marziali providing drivers new to the sport with science-based racing theory before riding shotgun with them to deliver one-on-one in-car training. Autocross racing is a sanctioned and regulated form of grassroots competition that enables participants to enjoy the thrill of motorsports without the burden of expenses associated with auto racing. It’s also a remarkably safe endeavour in which drivers race the clock for bragging rights, not each other. The course is generally confined to a large paved parking lot, or in this case, the massive pad of asphalt belonging to the JIBC’s PTEC. Bright orange cones laidout to create a circuitous web of challenging segments that flow from one to the other, and include such elements as offset gates, diminishing radius turns, long sweeping turns, G-circles, and the ever-popular inline slalom, define the course. While speed plays a role in the competition, science and driving ability carry the day. Understanding the limitations of tire grip and the physics of momentum and inertia help a driver anticipate and manage the effects of understeer and oversteer.
As world-champion rally racer Colin McRae once said, “straight roads are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers.” Knowing the fastest line to follow through each corner, gate, and slalom is where savvy drivers make-up time. Skill is the great equalizer for horsepower. Autocross courses are heavily skill-dependent, not horsepower hungry. Artistry and finesse trump raw power every time, especially when the Professional Autocross Index – otherwise known as PAX – is applied. PAX is a weighting system similar to a handicap in golf. It is a method of evening the playing field – or in this case, track – that requires a driver in a Ferrari to drive equally as well as a driver in a Honda Civic to score similar points. The reality is that most drivers race cars that are largely stock street-legal vehicles, which also serve as their daily driver. Most legitimate sports car clubs provide driver training opportunities for autocross racing, and in some cases driver-training on a bona fide race track. The UBC Sports Car Club generally holds two Autocross 101 programs per year. I recently attended the end-ofsummer session held at the PTEC facility. My 19-year old son Austin was invited
With instructors seated next to them, students lined-up in pre-grid to await the green light that would launch their inaugural run through the autocross course. With the use of sophisticated electronic timing, every hundredth of a second was accurately captured as the each driver made three runs through the course; the fastest serving as a baseline to measure improvement against. With baseline times established, the course was broken into its essential elements of a slalom line, a G-circle, a series of offset gates, and a diminishing-radius sweeper. Supported by coaching from their respective instructors, students spent the better part of the day perfecting their skills at all four stations. In the afternoon, each student made four timed-runs of the complete course. Each improved upon their baseline by significant margins, some dropping from the 40 and 50-second range to the thirties and forties while others – such as Jordan – cracked the barrier in the high 20s. Austin, who has benefitted from similar advanced driver training in the past dropped from 33.73 seconds to 30.22 seconds. While the day was filled with fun and excitement, it also served a greater purpose by developing driving skills that are completely transferrable to the street. In effect, making each student a better, safer driver.

Top five movie clunkers By Rob Sass
Pic of the Week
Nissan has created the world’s biggest working Zorb, complete with a fullsized Note safely cushioned inside. The giant inflatable ball, which measures six metres in diameter and more than 18 metres in circumference, was constructed to highlight Nissan’s Safety Shield technology featured on the Note, its popular small family car. Nicknamed the ‘CarZorb’, the colossal structure was successfully rolled down a course of steep hills in a two-minute film (YouTube – search Nissan Zorb). Originating in New Zealand, Zorbing sees thrill seekers roll downhill inside an orb, made of strong wearing inflatable plastic. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
It’s a lucky thing that Cash for Clunkers was enacted after any of these movies were made. These films would each have been a bit less amusing without their “star” cars. 1. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” 1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2000 Sport Sedan: Ferris Bueller’s long-suffering best friend Cameron Frye “drove” this faded and rusty Alfa Romeo sedan, sort of anyway. He never really got it started. Best diagnosis from our Alfa Romeo fans is the failure of something called a thermostatic actuator. We’re not making that up. I swear. 2. “The Big Lebowski,” 1973
Ford Gran Torino: Jeff Bridges’ character Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski is a man that the narrator opined “might be the laziest man in Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the running for laziest man worldwide.” He’s also a man who wrote a check in the amount of 69 cents for a carton of half and half and he drives a 1973 Ford Torino that was evidently some sort of shade of white, yellow, beige or gold prior to acquiring its as-filmed “patina” of rust, dents and primer spots. 3. “Body Heat,” 1964 Corvette: William Hurt plays an easily duped ambulance chaser of a Florida lawyer in this neo-noir
his head hanging out of the window, much like his canine companions. 5. Joe Dirt,” 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona: David Spade’s eponymous character drives a beat-to-hell ’69 Dodge Daytona, which probably gave at least a few MOPAR enthusiasts a stroke mid-movie. Like Mr. Dirt’s mullet, the Daytona is all business up front, party in the back, featuring an ultra-aerodynamic nose cone and a rear wing of comical proportions. classic. In addition to the fact that Kathleen Turner delivered a star-making performance in the film, we love it for the faded and disheveled but totally original Riverside Red ’64 Corvette convertible that Hurt’s character drives. 4. “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Jim Carey’s character “Ace Ventura” obviously cares more about the animals he is searching for than the car he is driving. Things go south almost immediately for Ace as his Monte Carlo is pummeled shortly after the opening credits by an angry man with a baseball bat. He is forced to spend the rest of the movie driving around with
