People have different definitions of what is in the public interest, according to KEEPS.
ARMS worried it may be silenced Changes to Society Act could quell protests By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
One of Maple Ridge’s river groups is taking notice of proposed changes to B.C.’s Society Act that could see environmental groups taken to court by someone claiming to be hurt by their actions. Changes to Section 99 of the act would allow anyone to get a court order against a group for acting illegally or for activities that “are detrimental to the public interest.” The West Coast Environmental Law Association says the court can make a wide range of orders against a society under that section. The changes would have the effect of silencing a group that’s trying to protect wildlife or the environment. “The whole idea of putting it down in the act, so people can do that kind of thing, makes it an open invitation,” said Greta Borick-Cunningham, with the Alouette River Management Society. She’s informed the society’s board of directors to see if they want to respond. See Act, 9

In the centre of it were black-andwhite photos of Canadian soldiers Patrice Vincent and Nathan Cirillo, both killed last week in terrorist attacks. “Lest we forget,” the wreath said. Both of David Isaac’s grandfathers served in the Second World War. “It’s solidarity for people who’ve lost their lives because they did what they believed in,” he said. “Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, they were doing their jobs. I feel it’s only right that people show up to support them.” Whether you agree with the government’s policies or not, he said, “They were still our soldiers and
they still deserve our respect and our remembrance.” Vincent was run down and killed by a car south of Montreal, while Cirillo, a member of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, was killed Thursday while on honour guard duty at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Moments after Cirillo was shot, House of Commons sergeant-atarms Kevin Vickers killed gunman Michael Zehaf Bibeau in the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. See Soldiers, 5

North Lougheed project divisive Candidates’ opinions about stalled project By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
C
andidates for Pitt Meadows council all predict that the issue of the North Lougheed Corridor will likely end up back before the newly elected council, and probably not far into their mandate. The 50-hectare site at the northeast corner of the intersection of the Lougheed Highway and Harris Road is primed for commercial development. It is owned by developer SmartCentres and has the existing six-member council at a stalemate, with three voting to advance the proposed development (Mayor Deb Walters and councillors Gwen O’Connell and Tracey Miyashita), and three not (David Murray, Bruce Bell and Janis Elkerton). “I was extremely disappointed that the proposal was squashed by an apparent slate that is now seeking re-election,” said mayoralty candidate Michael Hayes. He is in favour of the plan – which he pointed out has been in the works since 2007 – based on employment opportunities, tax revenue and improved transportation infrastructure. “There was a lot of merit there,” said Hayes. He noted that SmartCentres was ready to proceed, and thought the plan had the support of council. Now it’s delayed. “I hope it’s something council will look at early in the term.” Mayoralty candidate John Becker said council should deal with the issue in a timely manner. To do nothing, or let the issue sit, is not fair to SmartCentres, which has invested “time, treasure and talent” in its proposal. He said council must be seen by the development community to deal fairly. “We need to be business-like in how we deal with this issue.” The three councillors who voted

Development plans for the North Lougheed Corridor were stalled when the current six-member council couldn’t agree on how to proceed, mostly over a connector road and interchange. against the plan are on an election team with Becker – the “slate” Hayes refers to. Becker said building the road, the North Lougheed Connector, would cost taxpayers close to $20 million. There could be more costs on top of that, including land acquisition, that he said have the potential to add another $10-20 million in costs. Based on that, he said, it is good that council quashed the proposal as it stands. “I can’t make an economic issue for that connector, right off the top,” he said. He wants all the facts on the table, including the final design for the North Lougheed Connector, and the contribution of costs from all parties. He has seen three different versions of the connector’s tie-in to Harris Road, so that design has to be finalized. Becker said SmartCentres has to be clear about what design elements are “make or break,” and council should know what the highways ministry will contribute to an often-discussed Harris Road overpass, which would impact the development. He said the question of how many jobs will be generated remains nebulous, but that is a key consideration for council in a cost/

benefit analysis. “There’s a lot more homework on the facts and figures that needs to be done,” said Becker. “Then we can have an opinion that’s subjective.” Mayoralty candidate Gary Paller said the developer can proceed right now, by building an access to the site off Harris Road and building on the land that is already available. Any further roads or infrastructure needed to develop the site should be paid for by the developer, he said. SmartCentres already has 800 feet of commercial space along the highway that is available for building. Acquiring more land from the Agricultural Land Reserve is contingent on infrastructure. “I would like to see that parcel turned into commercial land,” said Paller. “What’s the holdup?” Council candidate Bill Dingwall said the development is complicated, because it is tied to the larger picture of building a new traffic artery north of the Lougheed Highway, to deal with growing congestion from Maple Ridge to Coquitlam. “I know that citizens don’t like taking 15 minutes to go from the Pitt bridge to 207th.” He said there are too many gaps in the plan for it to be approved by council.
“There’s no detailed planning done, and there’s no detailed financial numbers,” Dingwall added. He said the North Lougheed Connector is important infrastructure, and senior government should be at the table. The province’s contribution needs to be quantified before the plan goes ahead. “If I get on council, I’ll be asking all of those tough questions,” he said. “We need to do our due diligence, and figure out who’s going to pay.” Council candidate Mike Stark
has watched the issue unfold while attending council meetings over the past six years, and he feels SmartCentres is asking too much from the city. “I don’t like that the developers are saddling the taxpayers of Pitt Meadows with a huge bill,” he said, referring to the $19 million cost of building the North Lougheed Connector, and potentially more. “I’m not in favour of residents paying developers’ costs.” Stark said there are only 18,000 people in Pitt Meadows, and he believes SmartCentres is relying on customers from Maple Ridge to make its development a financial success – so it wants the connector built. He was also skeptical of the need for the development, given that there is a new Walmart and other stores “five minutes west,” that it would compete with. Stark noted that there is commercial space available for rent in Pitt Meadows now, including at Solaris – which he called “the crown jewel.” “Let’s take care of what we have right now,” he said. Scott Magri, another council candidate, does not want to see the expanded project proceed, noting the developers could put a strip mall in right now. “Farmland here is so important – you can’t eat asphalt,” he said, noting that water shortages in the U.S. will put more demands on agricultural land in Canada in the future. “This whole Lower Mainland is gold, and we’ve got to start protecting it,” he said. “I’m dead set against it [the development].”
NLC history The city’s plans for the 50-hectare North Lougheed Corridor, located northeast of the highway and Harris Road, has been a controversial issue for years. The land is mostly owned by SmartCentres, a land developer whose tenants include Walmart, Payless, Costco, Staples and Indigo. A concept plan adopted by council envisions mixed employment, a land-use designation that would allow everything from big box stores, a hotel or conference centre, showrooms or a business park. City hall hopes that developing the entire site will facilitate the construction of the North Lougheed Connector, a road that’s needed to access the commercial strip. It would stretch from Harris Road to Golden Ears Way. SmartCentres can begin construction on an area along the highway 600 feet deep, but needs a much larger space to accommodate its big-box tenants and parking. The city applied to the Agricultural Land Commission to exclude an additional 33.1 hectares (81 acres) from the reserve. The exclusion was granted in 2013, with four caveats, including further protection of farmland in other parts of the city, a required change in Metro Vancouver’s Regional Growth Strategy, and beginning construction of the North Lougheed Connector within three years of the ALC’s acceptance of a traffic-calming plan for Old Dewdney Trunk Road – a key route for farmers.

The nature of the attack has affected many people. “This wasn’t war. This was a cowardly attack, David Isaac said. “Being there as part of an honour guard, you’d think that would make you safe. By being killed in such a cowardly fashion, it strikes at the very core of what we are. George Isaac said it’s up to the government to write the proper legislation to protect against such attacks. “We have a democratic government and different parties. They have a responsibility to keep the government’s feet on the ground. The government and the military have to protect the country, he added, yet do so without losing our values. David Isaac said the Ottawa attack was both a terrorist incident and one from a disturbed individual using an ideology as an excuse. “He found something that fit his world view and allowed him to say, ‘Oh, I may be crazy, but this will give me the impetus to do something. “He wanted to make a statement. He made his statement and, sadly, he took out a nice young man in the process, and
that’s sad.â€? Royal Canadian Legion Maple Ridge Branch No. 88 president Mike Ward said the Maple Ridge ceremony was timed to take place an hour after the funeral for Cirillo in Hamilton, Ont. The legion wanted the mayor to lay the wreath on behalf of all the citizens of Maple Ridge. A similar ceremony took place at the cenotaph in Pitt Meadows. “It’s just such an unusual tragedy in Canada. For the military to be attacked at the honour guard ‌ this type of thing doesn’t happen in our country, at least we don’t think it does,â€? added Legion past president Jim MacDonald. Wayne Thomas, also a legion member, remembered when the federal government imposed the War Measures Act, which suspended civil liberties after the Front de Liberation du Quebec kidnappings in October 1970. His grandfather was a victim of a poison gas attack in the First World War, while his father was in the Second World War. Thomas just wanted to pay his respects. The small gathering in Maple Ridge dissolved quickly. The sky lightened a bit, but the rain kept falling on the wreath and the photos at the foot of the cenotaph.

Innocence lost Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent were not the only casualties of terror in Canada last week. A nation’s innocence died as Canadians unwillingly became part of international terror on our own soil. RCMP were already monitoring 90 people, including one of the two men who killed Canadian soldiers in sudden, unprovoked attacks. Security will increase as the terrorist attacks play into the existing law-and-order agenda of the governing Conservatives. More surveillance cameras is a given. Beefed-up security at airports and border crossings is inevitable. Who but the most ardent civil libertarians would oppose such measures when all signs point toward more terrorism within Canada? Last month, the spokesman for the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham called for attacks on Canadians. Abu Muhammad Al-Adnani urged ISIS supporters to kill Canadians, Americans, Australians, French and other Europeans whether they are members of the military or civilians. Extra security to defend against such attacks will be expensive. Canadians will lose some civil liberties in a tradeoff for feeling, and hopefully being, safer. How far will the pendulum swing? How much will our country change from its reputation as a peacemaker? Perhaps the most insidious aspect of terrorism is that radicalized fanatics can walk among us undetected, especially if they are Canadian citizens. One of the worst fallouts from terrorism is how it makes people and their governments fearful and reactionary. Residents of a less-innocent Canada are suddenly faced with more doubt and uncertainty. The trick will be protecting ourselves from fanatics without becoming extremists ourselves. – Black Press

Difficult birth for LNG cash cow VICTORIA – Debate is underway on the B.C. Liberal government’s tax and environmental plan for liquefied natural gas exports, amid the usual political theatre. Most media reported that the govB.C. Views ernment “slashed” its proposed seven-per- Tom Fletcher cent LNG processing income tax by half, caving in to demands of international energy giants led by Petronas of Malaysia. The 3.5 per cent tax wouldn’t even take full effect until the massive capital investment is written down, and would rise to five per cent after 20 years of production. All of this casts further doubt on Premier Christy Clark’s extravagant election campaign promise to use LNG revenues to wipe out B.C.’s debt, currently approaching $70 billion, and provide an Alberta-style “prosperity fund” to perform further miracles. The seven per cent figure was the top end of the range presented this spring while negotiations with LNG investors were ongoing, so it’s not really accurate to say it was “slashed.” This cash calf hasn’t been born yet, and it remains to be seen if it will survive. Finance Minister Mike de Jong pointed
out some of the shifts in the global gas market that have reduced expectations. Japan, one of the potential investors, is considering restarting its nuclear plants as it recovers from the 2011 Fukushima earthquake. China’s manic growth is slowing, and it has signed a long-term deal to import cheaper Russian pipeline gas. Oil prices have dropped. The government’s change of tone started with the recent throne speech, which emphasized the fate of B.C.’s only current export market. “Like forestry, B.C.’s natural gas industry has relied on exports to the United States,” the speech observed. “But the American shale gas revolution has meant the export south has dried up – and is never coming back.” So before B.C. gets to that prosperity fund, it’s got to stop the bleeding. You may recall it was a U.S. hurricane-induced spike in gas revenues that allowed the province to spread an extra billion to calm its labour waters for the 2010 Olympics. The finance ministry estimates that after the startup period, a medium-sized LNG export operation would pay total taxes of around $800 million a year to the province. De Jong notes that this is more revenue than B.C. will collect from the entire forest industry this year, from a single plant. There are 18 currently proposed.
This new LNG income tax is nowhere near the biggest source. It’s bigger than the carbon tax that LNG producers will pay on fuel use, but only a fourth of what B.C. collects in royalties for selling the gas. The biggest source of revenue from this hoped-for plant is “other taxes,” which include sales tax and corporate income tax, which B.C. increased to 11 per cent last year. University of Calgary economist Jack Mintz, who supported B.C. on its illfated harmonized sales tax, says this additional LNG tax is wrong-headed at any rate. “If other provinces take the same view with respect to resource taxation, new levies would be applied to oil refining, forest product manufacturing, mining processing and a host of other activities linked to resource industries,” Mintz wrote last week in the Financial Post. If B.C. does get a substantial LNG export industry, it will include gas from Alberta, with royalties going there, not here. And companies are also wrangling with the federal government over its taxes, with local governments and First Nations still in line for their cut. The big question isn’t whether B.C. will get its fair share. It’s whether there will be anything to share. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

THE NEWS/letters Angry over new dog leash rule
Questions for all candidates
Editor, The News: I am writing in regards to the bylaw amendment on retractable leashes. My husband and I are responsible dog owners and our dog is a good girl and is not aggressive toward other dogs or people. We walk her on a retractable leash and it is extended only when there are no other dogs or people around. As soon as there are, we pull the leash in. That way, we can protect her from other aggressive dogs. It’s so simple. I must agree with Cheryl Popeniuk, this present council (yes, I am blaming all of them) did not take everyone into consideration when they passed this bylaw amendment. It is unfairly punitive to good dogs and responsible dog owners over a single incident. What’s next? Ban dogs from Pitt Meadows altogether? Stop stores from selling retractable leashes? I can assure you that, unless this amendment is overturned, that not a single incumbent in the upcoming municipal election will be receiving my vote and I suggest that all other dog owners who feel the same way I do, follow suit. We have to take a stand. We pay taxes too and we deserve equal rights. Julie Bennett Maple Ridge Letters to the editor should be exclusive to The News and address topics of interest to residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. @ E-mail letters to editor@mapleridgenews.com.

Editor, The News: Election turnout has been poor in prior years. I think part of it is the lack of hope people have that anything good can happen, so why bother. But the municipal election system here is very confusing since there are no districts and we can’t vote for someone to represent us and our area concerns. Instead, we’re voting for everyone. There are so many people running, and it takes just too much effort to learn about these people. I would love to see – in hard copy print, that everyone can read – a summary with pictures of everyone running. I would like to see something like the following breakdown of questions answered. How long have they lived in Maple Ridge? Which areas of Maple Ridge do they live in now? What qualifications – education and experience –

Cheryl Ashlie voted to support the OCP, the plan upon which everyone invests their hard-earned money buying a home Ask will they listen to the good council of the experts – the planners, who have the qualifications to decide such matters, as which land use is appropriate and where. Fire hits shake mill again B y Phil Mel nyc hu k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
A night-time fire has shut down Fraser Cedar Products for the second time within a year, putting about 65 people out of work. The blaze started at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, requiring 14 fire trucks from both Maple Ridge and Mission. Maintenance work was being done on the mill in the morning, said Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence. At some point, the sprinkler system was damaged by a piece of equipment, leaving half
the mill without fire suppression. Work stopped when the sprinkler was damaged, but fire broke out in the late evening after everyone left. “Once the sprinkler system was damaged, they ceased all operations. And then it’s believed the actions of the hot work done earlier in the day resulted in a fire,” Spence said. “From a fire department perspective, this was a large-scare operation. Approximately, 70 firefighters from Maple Ridge and Mission attended with 14 pieces of apparatus on site.” Mill owner Baljinder

half of the mill was destroyed. The portion that still had the sprinkler system was preserved. There were no injuries. Gill said only about a quarter of the mill remains. That could become operational if some new equipment is added, but said it will take a year to rebuild the mill entirely. “It’s very sad.” Gill said Fraser Cedar Products was the biggest shake mill remaining on the Fraser River. A previous fire hit the mill on Nov. 30 last year, likely caused by welding earlier that day.

Gill said it’s not certain caused the fire. “We don’t know. It’s still under investigation,” adding it could be electrical in nature. During the battle, the CP Railway line was shut down so that fire trucks could move back and forth across the tracks to the mill at 27400-block Lougheed Highway. A fire pump located at the mill supplied water to half of the mill to fight the fire, but tanker trucks had to haul in the rest of the water. It took until after midnight to get the fire under control. At least

‘Watching with interest’ Act from front
“I think it’s pretty cut and dried. It affects us and so many small organizations who can’t afford to be stuck in the courts?” The Alouette River Management Society functions on a yearly budget of $240,000. The government’s white paper that lays out the proposed changes adds that there’s a general expectation that societies “will act in the public interest.” The law society, though, challenges that, saying that both the existing and proposed act says that a society just has to be created for a legal purpose. Former ARMS president Geoff Clayton likened the proposed change to a “slap” letter a group or person can receive from a lawyer warning of legal consequences if they continue their actions. Slap refers to – strategic lawsuit against public participation, a lawsuit filed with the intent of silencing criticism. “It’s used so many times to intimidate and you never know whether that person has deep enough pockets to do it. It certainly gets your attention when you know he has money.” Clayton didn’t know if the government was deliberately targeting conservation or environmental groups with such changes. “I just feel we’re being beaten up on all fronts. It’s just amazing. Democracy is unravelling.” According to the Ministry of Finance, the Society Act outlines the rules that govern B.C.’s 27,000 societies. Societies are non-profit corporations organized primarily for social purposes, ranging from community-based organizations to large charities. MLA Marc Dalton though pointed out that
all comments will be considered as the government starts preparing its final rewrite of the act. “It certainly will be examined. “It’s an important issue and all the comments will be considered.” But it could be next year when that happens, he added. Dalton said he’s talked to Finance Minister Mike de Jong. “He’s assured me – this is a white paper. The government really does want to get it right.” Ross Davies, with the Kanaka Education and Environmental Partners Society, says the society just runs the hatchery and educational programs. But what if KEEPS reports on someone harming the stream or encroaching on public land? In other cities, developers have written slap letters to volunteer groups, silencing them, he added. “It could potentially give a little traction to someone who’s got a bone to pick.” But if the society is acting properly, it should be OK. “I could potentially see wasting everyone’s time.” People have different definitions of what is in the public interest, Davies added. That needs more definition in the new act, he added. He supports the law society response and the letter it and 50 other groups wrote to Finance Minister Mike de Jong on Oct. 15. “We’re watching with interest to see which way this goes,” Davies said. The society wrote to de Jong saying the proposals, “have the potential to intimidate many societies.” Allowing the public the option to seek a court order against a society, will “invite litigation.”

Campaign stop: Hammond Candidates talk jobs, growth B y Phil Mel nyc hu k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Candidates and their supporters almost outnumbered voters Thursday in Hammond as the campaign for the Nov. 15 Maple Ridge election kicked into high gear. Five competitors for mayor and more than 20 council hopefuls tried to summarize their platforms in two-minute speeches and answer questions from the audience in the same period of time. “In Maple Ridge, we need to set bigger goals,” said Tyler Shymkiw, seeking a first term on council. Maple Ridge has to find a better way to use “the best asset we don’t use” – its waterfront along the Fraser River, he said.
Many candidates said they wanted to bring jobs to Maple Ridge so people don’t have to leave the community to make their living. “I’m just so tired all the time,” said Grant Sanderson, who commutes hourly to Langley after losing his job several years ago when the Pelton Reforestation tree nursery closed. “I do believe we need jobs in the community like nothing else,” added Al Hogarth, seeking a fifth term on council. “We need post secondary and that is through bricks and mortar,” not through online programs, he added. Maple Ridge, Mission and Pitt Meadows have created a task force in an attempt to bring a multiuniversity college to the area. The city also needs more leadership from
council in the community, “and not just be there for the sake of shaking hands and kissing babies,” said former Maple RidgePitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce executive director Dean Barbour. He wants to focus on economic growth and continue to improve on the downtown, adding he believes in smart growth. The meeting took place at Hammond elementary, but local issues, such as the area plan underway to plan Hammond’s future growth, weren’t discussed. Former mayor Gordy Robson noted he used to go to elementary school in the area. “The roads down here haven’t changed much in Hammond. That’s a long time ago.” He said he wants to change the way Maple Ridge looks at Metro Vancouver and Pitt Meadows. “I’d like to change the

way we think about our relationship with Pitt Meadows.” First Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows fire departments can merge. “Do that and we can be one step closer to what we eventually have to do – and that’s amalgamate,” Robson said. Kristina Brown, a Vancouver realtor, said she can no longer watch the direction Maple Ridge is growing. “We need to take a break from building houses in the northeast. We do not have schools to support families in those areas. There are limited services in place.” The required additional infrastructure is causing taxes to rise. “Quite simply, this method of growth is not sustainable,” she said. Council incumbent Corisa Bell said she’s pressed city hall to be more accountable. “I’ve continued to ask the tough questions about how your money is spent. The property tax increase was lower, government was made more transparent and an environment for change was created. “Any questions, I’m an open book.” Council candidate Craig Ruthven said he learned from visiting 1,800 homes during the 2011 election that people want to preserve Maple Ridge’s natural beauty. “I think we’re all in agreement that we want to safeguard those surroundings.” The last three years he visited Langford, North Vancouver, Saanich, Whistler, Canmore, Alta., talking to staff and councillors to learn about each city. Hammond resident Eric Phillips organized the meeting and exhorted people to vote. “We need everybody out there voting. Twenty per cent of those coming out to vote is not going to be very much fun.” If people don’t bother to vote, they can’t complain, he added. All five mayoralty candidates, Mike Morden, Ernie Daykin, Nicole Brown, Graham Mowatt and Gary Cleave took part. Absentee council candidates were Mission magician Mike Norden, Bruce McWilliam, James Buddy Rogers, Sara Dawn Beckett and Brian Savage.

Ruthven: better ’burbs? B y Phil Mel nyc h uk pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
J. Craig Ruthven wants to change the way Maple Ridge sees itself and ensure it’s better than just another ‘burb. After running against Mayor Ernie Daykin in 2011, and talking to people in about 1,800 homes, Ruthven has made several trips to cities after which Maple Ridge could model itself. He did so after hearing from residents who say they want Maple Ridge to remain unique and to preserve its natural character and feel. His visits included Saanich and Langford, both near Victoria, as well as Whistler and north Burnaby, as well as the resort town of Canmore, Alta., just outside Banff, in the Rocky Mountains. While he was in those places, he took photos and notes and talked to municipal staff and councillors about how those communities grew and tried to learn what kind of policies could help Maple Ridge grow in a similar fashion. “I envision our town taking on some of the very best characteristics of these communities. “For example, we could take on the flavour of, while not actually being, a resort town by weaving more nature into local development, as well as rustic post-and-beam architecture. “Surrey is using progressive tree bylaws to do this, and the difference is
night and day,” he writes. Maple Ridge could also demand year-round, pedestrian-oriented shopping that includes overhangs on buildings to protect people from Ruthven the rain and sun. Such areas could serve as locations for small-scale, live entertainment. The City of Maple Ridge could market itself to the rest of B.C. and Canada as an “outdoor adventure land with dashes of ecotourism.” But all of the above requires a change in mindset and in how Maple Ridge identifies itself. “So that we can decide who we are, as a community, and what is that we would like to accomplish.” Ruthven says Maple Ridge has put the interests of the housing community above those of residents and that has led to haphazard planning. “The mistaken notion” that it’s alright to just build houses has led to exhausting commutes, less leisure time, and less time to contribute to community life. On top of that, people have to get into their cars when they want to go shopping. “What sort of a life is this?” Ruthven asks. “Who or what is perpetuating it?”
Maple Ridge Backyard Burning “Backyard Fire” is an outdoor fire where garden refuse such as leaves and small branches indigenous to the property are burned for the purpose of disposal due to garden clean-up or damage from high winds. Before you burn, please consider the Brush Chipping Program. For more information call the Ridge Meadows Recycling at 604-463-5545 or visit www.rmrecycling.org. If you do choose to burn, the following guidelines apply: • The urban areas of Maple Ridge are completely closed to any type of burning. • The rural areas of Maple Ridge may burn dry garden refuse from October 15 to November 15 with a permit if the fire can be located a minimum of 15 metres from structures and property lines. • Permits may be revoked and fines issued by the Fire Department at any time for non-compliance. • Permits are $25.00 available from the Maple Ridge Fire Department, Hall #1 or the Municipal Hall, Finance Department. To determine if you live in the rural area and are eligible for a burning permit, contact the Fire Department during the following business hours. Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm 604-463-5880 Visit our web site at www.fire.mapleridge.ca to view the rules & regulations of a fire permit. Struck by simplicity of sonata Eliza Lim will play Mozart at Fall Piano Concert By Colleen Fla n ag a n cflanagan@mapleridgenews.com
E
liza Lim fell in love the first time she heard the first movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s sonata in D major. Usually, the 17-year-old classical pianist plays more extravagant classical pieces, her favourite composer being Chopin.
But what attracted her most to Mozart’s sonata was the simplicity of the music and the bright, happy energy of the first movement. “It’s very simplistic, which creates the challenge. It’s interesting to play,” said Lim. “It is difficult in a different way from most of my pieces. It’s quite technically difficult. It’s pretty fast paced, in the first movement. The second movement is a slower, more lyrical movement,” she continued. Lin will be performing the piece at Dan Wardrope’s upcoming 18th annual Fall Piano Concert to raise money for Free the Children. This will be her fifth concert. She has been performing the concerts since she

was 12 years old. “I like the atmosphere that the concert sets. It’s a very positive atmosphere and the audience is always welcoming,” said Lim.
All Wardrope’s students are studying at a Grade 10 or ARCT level with the Royal Conservatory of Music. This year’s program will include music by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and other 20th Century works. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $25,000 for various charities. The 18th annual Fall Piano Concert takes place Sunday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at Swan-e-Set Golf and Country Club in Pitt Meadows.
“It’s a very positive atmosphere and the audience is always welcoming.” Eliza Lim She will be performing along with fellow classical pianists Andrew Croswell, Yu Yan Cheng, Yu An Cheng, Nicole Lassetter, Paul Westlund, Edward Liang and Lillian Zhang.
• Tickets are $15 and must be ordered in advance through Dan Wardrope, 604-818-8853 or djwardrope@gmail.com.

50-0 blowout Pitt Meadows Marauders improve to 4-1 on season By Neil Corbe tt sports@mapleridgenews.com
The Pitt Meadows Marauders bounced back from their first loss of the season, to Mission last week, and hammered the Rick Hansen Hurricanes 50-0 on Friday on their home field. “We played well – one of our first that we played a full game, right from the start,” said head coach Matt Todd. Running back Ryan Beaubien had a career game, as the running back had 250 rushing yards, and put up three touchdowns, including one off a punt that he blocked. He also had an interception on defence, which he ran back 40 yards, to go with six tackles. Mark Ashamalla took an interception 80 yards for a major. Defensive standout Mack Dhami, a middle linebacker, led the team with seven tackles and two sacks. He also opened big holes for Beaubien on the
offensive side of the ball playing fullback, and had a rushing touchdown of his own on a 20-yard run. The win improves them to 4-1 in the Double A Eastern Conference. Todd said the Hurricanes will be heard from next season. “They’re really young this year, but they’re a good program.” Pitt was supposed to have an exhibition game against Sentinel this weekend, but that game is now uncertain, due to field closures.
Junior football In junior varsity football action, the Pitt JV squad beat Abbotsford 28-14 on Thursday. It was a big win, said Todd, who also coaches the juniors, because Abbotsford is considered one of the top double A junior teams. Running back Jared Slater had two touchdowns, and RB Brandon Hunt also found the end zone. “They’re a dual threat in the backfield,” said Todd. “They’re both downhill runners, hard runners, and they have explosiveness as well.”

Flames facing league’s elite By Nei l Corbe tt sports@mapleridgenews.com
The Ridge Meadows Flames have been playing better hockey, but the schedule has them playing the league’s best teams. On Saturday night at the Harry Jerome Rec Centre in North Vancouver, they lost 8-4 to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack – a team that has gone a sterling 12-1-0-2 so far this season. Boston Colley had a goal and
an assist in the game, while Danny Wilson, Joe Olson and Dale Howell also scored. The Flames got two firstperiod powerplay goals, then cruised to a 5-0 win over the Port Moody Panthers on Friday night in Pacific Junior Hockey League action at Planet Ice. Kurt Klimek was perfect in goal, stopping all 23 shots that he faced in the shutout. Colley had three assists, Andrew Strelezki had a goal and an
assist, and Cameron Alder, Jordan Rendle, Bradley Crompton and Howell all scored. The Flames, now 6-7, remain in second place in the Harold Brittain Conference. Their schedule doesn’t get easier – they are in Richmond on Thursday, taking on the 123-0-1 Sockeyes, and then host a Halloween game on Friday night at Planet Ice, when they take on the 7-7 Grandview Steelers.

Gymnastics B.C. honours locals sports@mapleridgenews.com
Gymnastics B.C. honoured the province’s top athletes, coaches and volunteers at its annual awards banquet Saturday in Burnaby, and two local people were among 75 who received plaques, scholarships and recognition for their hard work. Karen Capel of Pitt Meadows was
given a Gymnastics Canada service gold pin for her service to the sport. Cameron Quinlan of Maple Ridge, a member of the Shasta Trampoline club of New Westminster, was given a Gymnastics B.C. scholarship, valued at $500. These awards are given to outstanding student-athletes who are members of Gymnastics B.C.
Hunt still up with Oilers sports@mapleridgenews.com
Brad Hunt was back in the lineup for the Edmonton Oilers’ 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night. With 18:26 of ice time, Hunt got a regular shift, and led all defencemen with 4:52 of power play ice time, but did not figure in the scoring. An Edmonton hockey beat writer said he did a credible job of being the seventh defenceman, filling in during an injury. It was a good sign for the many local hockey fans rooting for the 26-year-
old rookie out of Maple Ridge. Hunt won a spot in the roster as an underdog in training camp, and started the first three games of the year with the team. He also scored his first NHL goal. With the Oilers off to a slow start, Hunt was a healthy scratch for the next five games, before figuring into the plans Monday. He had been a -3 on the plus/minus stat, but most Oiler blueliners were well into the minuses. Still, his situation had been looking eerily similar to last year, when Hunt got a three-game audition, was -3, and was sent back down to the minors.
