TOYOTA CAMRY
TOYOTA COROLLA
Toyota spices up its top-selling mid-size sedan and sets it on a new path. Drivetrain: Camry’s four-cylinder and V6 engines return unaltered, as does the Hybrid’s gasoline-electric power team.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $25,500; $30,000 (Hybrid) Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (178) Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (268); 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (156) with 105-kilowatt electric motor (200, combined, Hybrid) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: 6-speed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (hybrid) l/100 km (city/highway): 9.7/6.9 (2.5, MT); 5.5/6.0 (Hybrid) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s-side knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,480
For years the Toyota Camry has been one of the principal leaders in the mid-size sedan segment. However, being on top doesn’t automatically guarantee success with the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and several other mid-size marques chasing your tailpipe. To appeal to new and existing buyers alike, Toyota has sharpened the Camry’s claws in one of the brand’s more dramatic adjustments. The most obvious change is the dramatically different front end where a new spindle-style grille/air intake has been installed. There are new gauges, a reshaped control panel and recovered seats with better-quality fabrics. One neat feature is an available wireless charging system located in a bin ahead of the shifter that will energize your smart phone or similar electronic device without having to plug it in. Virtually unchanged are the Camry’s three power teams that are proven stalwarts and remain competitive against the rest of the field. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder is the primary workhorse for the majority of Camrys and provides 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile the 268-horsepower V6 remains optional. The carryover Camry Hybrid drivetrain consists of a 156-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine linked to a 105-kilowatt (141 horsepower) electric motor for a net system output of 200 horsepower and 199 pound-feet. The Hybrid earns a rating of 5.5 l/100 km in the city and 6.0 on the highway; numbers that are attainable only if you keep a light touch on the gas pedal. Both gasoline engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid employs a continuously variable unit (CVT). Camry drivers are treated to a retuned suspension (sport-tuned for the SE version). The electric-power-steering rack has also been tweaked for greater straight-line stability and a more direct feel while turning. The base Camry LE arrives with most of the expected content, but stepping up to the XSE and XLE will really make a difference with added sport and luxury content. They include a power moonroof, acoustic noise-reducing windshield, push-button start and a premium audio package that’s combined with a navigation system.
Given the ubiquity of Toyota’s Corolla on the highways and byways, at least it’s much nicer to look at. Drivetrain: Base 1.8litre four-cylinder; six-speed manual transmission and four-speed automatics remain; fuel-sipping CVT optional, but standard with LE Eco model.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $17,600 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (132, 140 LE ECO)) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: 6-speed manual; 4-speed automatic (opt. on base); continuously variable (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 8.3/6.2 (MT); 7.7/5.6 (LE ECO) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; sidecurtain airbags; driver’s side knee airbag; front-passenger seat-cushion airbag; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,265
In 48 years, Toyota has sold more than 40 million Corollas and currently operates 16 factories worldwide that ship them to 154 countries. The 11th-generation North American version, released for 2014, has much more style -- especially from the windshield forward -- than its broad base of customers are used to seeing. The car grew about four inches in overall length and in distance between the front and rear wheels. In addition a slightly wider cabin also contributes to more passenger space. Interior styling was also improved, but in a conservative way that differs from more daring competitors. Likewise, engine choices eschew anything performance-related. A 132-horsepower four-cylinder carried over from the previous generation and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission for the base CE and the S. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the CE, while a new continuously variable unit (CVT) is optional for S and standard for LE and LE ECO. To reduce that “rubber-band” sensation of varying engine speed that’s prevalent with many CVT applications, Toyota’s engineers added seven artificial shift points that function automatically (or can be controlled through available steering-column-mounted paddle shifters) to simulate the action of a regular automatic transmission. The LE ECO is also equipped with a 140-horsepower version of the 1.8 that’s slightly better on gas. Aside from a more efficient engine with special variable valve timing, those figures are achieved with the help of underbody panels that improve the car’s aerodynamics (and reduce highway-speed fuel consumption). As before, entry-level Corollas don’t come with air conditioning; that’s saved for the LE and the S. To celebrate 50 years in Canada, Toyota will let you opt up for one of two 50th Anniversary Special Edition packages that build on the S and bundle together some popular features. All models come with steel wheels as standard, with aluminum wheels available only as an option.

SUBARU LEGACY
SUBARU OUTBACK A new challenger in the mid-size sedan league keeps an allwheel-drive ace up its sleeve.
Beneath the Outback’s suburban sheetmetal there’s a rock-climbingcapable off-roader.
Drivetrains: Four- and six-cylinder engines return; sixspeed manual transmission in four-cylinder models while a continuously variable transmission is optional, but standard with the six-cylinder engine; AWD is standard, of course.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $25,150 Type: Four-door, all-wheel-drive mid-size sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre SOHC H4 (175) Optional engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC H6 (256) Layout: Front engine, all-wheel-drive Transmissions: 6-speed manual; continuously variable l/100 km (city/highway): 9.0/6.5 (CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,540
The Legacy has grown both in stature and size to become one of the most spacious mid-size four-doors on the market. It also matches the sedan-pack leaders in attractiveness. There’s plenty of new stuff inside the updated cabin, including a more modern dashboard and a more centrally located touch-screen display for the rearview camera and infotainment/navigation systems. The Legacy’s powerplants carry over from 2014, although the base 175-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder receives slight changes to make it a bit lighter, quieter and more fuel-efficient. It’s rated at 9.0 l/100 km in the city and 6.5 on the highway. Those numbers are achieved with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The optional 3.6-litre six-cylinder that makes 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder can be ordered with six-speed manual transmission, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional, but standard with the six-cylinder models. The all-wheel-drive system -- standard on all Legacy models, of course -- has been augmented for 2015 with torque vectoring. The system applies light braking to the inside front wheel while turning, which helps the Legacy rotate, thus helping to enhance steering control. The base Subaru 2.5i arrives with numerous usual convenience features, including a 10-way adjustable power driver’s seat. The 2.5i Touring adds a power sunroof, dual-zone climate control, push-button start and 17-inch alloy wheels (16-inch steelies are standard). Pop for the 2.5i or 3.6R Limited and you get perforated-leather seats, power passenger seat, 576-watt Harmon/Kardon-brand audio system and 18-inch wheels. Additional option packages can also be had on upper-level trims, including a navigation system plus Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety aids. This includes adaptive cruise control to follow traffic at a safe distance, lane-departure warning, fog lights that illuminate either left or right in tight turns and Pre-Collision Braking that will slow or stop the car if it determines that you’re going to rear end the car in front.
Drivetrains: Four- and six-cylinder engines return, but wider use of the continuously variable transmission; standard all-wheel-drive is the Subaru way, of course.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $28,650 Type: Four-door, all-wheel-drive wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC H4 (173) Optional engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC H6 (256) Layout: Front engine, all-wheel-drive Transmissions: 6-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT, opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 9.3/7.1 (2.5, CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,665
During its 20-year history, Subaru’s wagon has remained true to its roots, while undergoing continuous improvement. For the 2015 model year, the Legacy-sedan-based Outback receives a number of critical updates. Visually, the car appears similar to the outgoing version, although a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirrors are evident. The upgrades continue inside, with a quieter cabin with a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console. The Outback’s suspension has been retuned and Subaru has added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produces a bit more peak horsepower (175 versus 173) and maintains the same torque rating of 174 pound-feet. The optional 3.6-litre six-cylinder continues to make 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet torque. The four-cylinder can be ordered with six-speed manual transmission, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional, but standard with the six-cylinder models. The standard all-wheel-drive system has also been tuned for improved slippery-road performance. A new driver-controlled X-Mode adjusts the transmission and engine output plus the AWD system to reduce wheelspin. X-Mode also adds Hill Descent Control (keeps vehicle speed to a crawl), Incline Start Assist (briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills) and a Hill Holder System that prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback’s 22-centimere ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty.

2015
With nimble handling and dynamic styling unlike any other Japanese midsize sedan available today, the Legacy is the no-compromise alternative that stands out from the crowd. Award-winning safety standards, superb value and rock-solid reliability also have the experts talking.
Perfect for back roads or any road for that matter, the Outback delivers all-weather capability, massive versatility and unexpected car-like handling. These stellar qualities are wrapped up in a stylish package and backed by class-leading safety systems.

KIA SOUL
KIA SEDONA A purposeful people/cargo hauler that has finally caught up to the minivan competition.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $31,840 Type: Four-door minivan Engine (hp): 3.3-litre DOHC V6 (276) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: 6-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 13.2/9.7 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,900 (est.)
It’s not just a youth-market car as the Soul draws in buyers from every age group, which is why Kia dealers can’t keep the “mousy” hatch/ wagon in stock. For 2015 the Soul also goes electric. Drivetrain: Base 1.6-litre four-cylinder shared with the Rio; 2.0 option adds passing power; six-speed transmissions.
Drivetrain: A 276-horsepower V6 sounds about right, as does a six-speed automatic transmission. The Sedona is part of the minivan pack, but it really hasn’t been considered a major player. Perhaps all that could change for the 2015 model year. The style and proportions are right on the money and it’s devoid of superfluous curves and angles. The interior is as clean and uncluttered as the exterior and it abounds in handy touches. There’s room for up to eight people with the standard second-row bench seat, or seven with the optional second-row lounge chairs (with retractable leg rests) that can be positioned facing the front or the rear. Either mid-row arrangement slides fore and aft over a wide range and both the 60:40 split bench or chairs stow against the front seats to maximize cargo space. Mounted within the Sedona’s stiffer platform is a 3.3-litre V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It’s pretty decent on fuel with a rating of 13.2 l/100 km in the city and 9.7 on the highway. Expect the seven trim levels to run a very broad range, from practical family transporter to full-on luxury machine, to compete with the Chrysler Town and Countrys of the world. Base equipment in the L includes seven-passenger seating, front and rear air conditioning, keyless remote and the usual power options. At the top is the SXL+ that nudges the $48,000 mark.
Few cars are ever considered groundbreaking, but that pretty much sums up the Soul. It’s the kind of vehicle that other automakers would give anything to have in their stable. Funky styling, a frugal price tag and fuel-saving ways have made it a winner. Even those lovable rodents in the Soul’s Base price TV spots are half way to attaining icon status. For 2014, Kia upgraded (incl. destination): $18,700 and slightly enlarged the cabin for more front head and shoulder room and added a bit more rear legroom. In addition the dashboard was Type: Four-door front-wheelrevised to accommodate an available 20-centimetre touch screen. The drive compact tall wagon platform was made 29 per cent stiffer and accommodates a suspension Base engine (hp): that was reengineered for improved ride and handling. Outside, design 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (130) details inspired by the Soul-based Trax’ster concept provided the basis for a front and rear facelift that makes the Soul much more appealing. Optional engine (hp): The rear liftgate was made six centimetres wider and is now flanked 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (164) by one of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle. The Layout: Front engine, entry-level LX Soul is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder that profront-wheel-drive duces 130 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional Transmissions: 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the EX and SX models delivers the same 164 6-speed manual/automatic (1.6); horses and 151 pound-feet of torque. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic, while the 2.0 is only 6-speed automatic (2.0) available with the automatic. Base Souls feature air conditioning, but l/100 km (city/highway): not when the manual transmission is ordered, plus all the usual power 8.6/6.5 Manual, 8.5/6.6 Automatic amenities. Optional is a panorama-style sunroof and leather seats Safety: Front airbags; side(heated and ventilated in front), along with a navigation system and premium Infinity-brand sound package. Load up a Soul and you’re impact airbags; side-curtain looking a close to $29,200. Under the heading of Big News, the Soul EV airbags; anti-lock brakes; arrives for 2015 with an electric motor rated at 109 horsepower and 210 traction/stability control pound-feet of torque and an EPA-rated range of about 150 kilometres Weight (kg): 1,230 before its lithium-ion-polymer batteries need recharging.

Cold weather and icy conditions can make winter driving difficult. That is why it is so important to properly prepare your vehicle in anticipation of freezing temperatures and the first snowfalls. Here are 10 steps to follow so that your car is ready for the challenges of winter. 1. Change your tires. Winter tires provide better traction on snow and ice and the rubber is more effective in cold weather. Be sure to have them put on as soon as the weather starts getting colder; don’t wait for the first real snowstorm to do it. 2. Change the oil. Make sure the engine oil you use is suitable for winter use. If it isn’t, change the oil before the weather gets too cold in order to avoid damaging the engine. 3. Add antifreeze. The fluid in your radiator should contain 50 percent water and 50 percent antifreeze. Use a test kit to ensure that this is the case or check with your mechanic. 4. Check your wipers. Ensure that your wiper blades are in good condition and are not scratching the windshield. Fill up your wind-

FORD ESCAPE
Ford’s updated mainstream compact is now available with the same fuel-sipping three-cylinder engine from the Fiesta along with smoking-hot ST performance or oppositely, electric economy.
Drivetrain: 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder connected to a five-speed manual transmission or optional automated manual; new 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder with a six-speed manual; ST still uses big turbo and extra gear to handle 252 horses; optional all-electric drivetrain with 143-horsepower motor. Ford is making great use of its parts bin to continually improve its cars. The 2015 Focus gets similar styling tweaks found on the smaller Fiesta, including a new hood, LED head- and taillights, grille, bumpers and more. But it’s under that new metal where the Focus gains the most. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged “EcoBoost” engine will find a second home in the larger Focus, although it still packs the same 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. And while the Fiesta only has five gears in its application, the Focus will get six. Fuel figures have yet to be revealed, but expect this to be a significantly greener machine given how much “oomph” you give up compared with the base model. At the other end of the spectrum, the ST performance model takes all the positives of the Focus and then adds a list of improvements aimed at buyers who otherwise might be in the mood for a Volkswagen GTI. The 2.0-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder produces 252 horsepower and even features “overboost” with a giant slug of mid-range torque added. The ST is still front-wheel-drive, but uses a stiffer suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems to make it a true back-road hero. The ST gets unique parts inside and out, including more supportive seats and only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. The Focus Electric continues with its 143-horsepower motor and lithium-ion battery pack that can deliver a claimed range of 122 kilometres. By Ford’s clock, recharging takes three to four hours from a 240volt home station. The car gets special wheels, low-rolling-resistance tires and other wind-cheating aids. Like other electric cars, the Focus isn’t inexpensive with an MSRP of $39,200 before tax rebates and other incentives, but there aren’t many downsides if you can afford it. All the “unique” Focus models only come in four-door hatchback form, but the “regular” cars can be had as sedans. The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and is connected to a five-speed manual transmission. Optional is a six-speed automated manual gearbox with paddle shifters.
Drivetrain: Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety in the name of fuel economy.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $25,100 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168) Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237) Layout: Front-engine, front-/four-wheel-drive Transmission: 6-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 10.9/7.6 (2.5, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,590
Fifty and fabulous, Ford’s half-century -old ponycar is renewed for 2015 and is ready to rumble, wheel-to-wheel, with its Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger nemeses.
Stronger, faster and lighter best describes the new aluminum-bodied F-Series; retooled from top to bottom, from bumper to tailgate and under the hood.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Ford has always done well with the compact Escape, but its usability was always its best aspect. The second-generation’s radically different sheetmetal is just one reason why it’s more popular than ever. Its slightly larger dimensions mean greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but it makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over that of earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time around since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees”, the six-speed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a six-speed automatic (with a detent for manual gear selection) as the sole transmission. An “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 percent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy considering the Escape’s four distinct trims. But the most unique option is the power liftgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/or groceries). For 2015, Escape can be ordered with an optional chrome appearance package that includes 19-inch wheels, bright, spangly trim and leather seats.

FORD F150 Drivetrain: The “normal” V6 and V8 engines are joined by two turbocharged “EcoBoost” V6s; all receive six-speed automatic transmissions; four-wheel-drive optional; dune-jumping SVT Raptor and its stout 411-horsepower V8 are missing for now. The world’s best-selling pickup looks to hold on to its title despite General Motors and Ram charging hard to catch up. It’s the truck category that leads the way these days in technology advancements and Ford’s Base price (incl. destination): $26,600 adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 (to be joined by Ford’s Super Duty series for 2016) is one heck of a game changer and in more Type: Two- /four-door pickup ways than one. Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rustBase engine (hp): averse aluminum body panels will save as much as 315 kilograms (Ford 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (283) claims) in the process, depending on whether you’re talking about regular-, Optional engines (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on V6; turbocharged (325); 3.5-litre DOHC a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually a bit lighter. That V6, turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre DOHC reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? Base trucks now V8 (385) come with a new 3.5-litre V6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet Layout: Front-engine, of torque, while an equally new twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 that’s rated at 325 rear-/four-wheel-drive horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from Transmission: 6-speed automatic last year are two of Ford’s workhorse powerplants: a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; and l/100 km (city/highway): a 5.0-litre V8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque (up 12.0/8.5 (3.5, 4x2; est.) from 360/380). That leaves out last year’s 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 that Safety: Front airbags; side-impact was standard in the way-off-road-capable SVT Raptor (its replacement is airbags; side-curtain airbags with expected to arrive by mid-2015). Inside, the cabin, or “office” for many rollover protection; anti-lock brakes; truck owners, has been completely transformed and on up-level models approaches luxury-car standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch stability control trims. The FX4 off-road option package (firmer suspension, skid plates and Weight (kg): 1,800 (est.) a locking rear axle) can be added to most 4x4 models.
Ford obviously hit a home run with its small and tall Escape, given its ubiquity on the roads.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Drivetrain: Base V6 and optional V8 engines are joined by a turbocharged four-cylinder that just might steal the show; six-speed manual and automatic transmissions all around.
A lengthy promotional blitz has finally culminated with the launch of a brand new Mustang. Ford has high global hopes for its latest Ponycar (a term coined specifically for cars in the Mustang’s class) since both left- and right-hand drive Base price (incl. versions will be sold in Europe and Asia. That could also explain a certain Eurodestination): $26,550 styling vibe that the Mustang exudes, especially in the delicate sweep where Type: Two-door coupe the roofline meets the rear deck and swoopy tail panel. At the opposite end, the Base engine (hp): Mustang’s grille and lower air intake are remarkably similar to what you’ll find on the 2014 edition. Also essentially unchanged are both the base 3.7-litre V6 that 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (300) makes 300 horsepower (down slightly from 305) and the 5.0-litre V8 in the GT Optional engines (hp): 2.3-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged with an output of 435 horsepower, up from 420. Slotted between the two is a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder unit that’s rated at 310 horsepower. All three (310); 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (435) engines will be available in the Mustang coupe and convertible with a cloth top Layout: Front-engine, that raises and lowers twice as quickly as before. From a driver’s perspective, the Mustang’s six-speed manual transmission has been reworked for smoother shifts. rear-wheel-drive A six-speed automatic, now with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, is Transmissions: 6-speed optional. For 2015, Ford has finally ditched the Mustang’s stone-age solid rear axle manual; 6-speed automatic setup and replaced it with a more modern independent rear system (along with a (opt.) new front suspension) that promises a better ride, improved handling in the corl/100 km (city/highway): ners and added interior and stowage space. The distance between the front and rear axles was also increased and the car now sits a bit lower to the ground. The 12.6/8.5 (V6, MT) interior has also been completely retooled with large round gauges and an equally Safety: Front airbags; sizable touch-screen that dominates the control panel. Of all the available options side-impact airbags; to be had on the Mustang, one of the more intriguing is a Track Apps package. It anti-lock brakes; traction includes a “line lock” feature that holds the front brakes so the driver can, in Ford’s control; stability control words, “warm up the tires” (i.e. burn up the tread in a cloud of smoke). Also part of Track Apps is Launch Control (that allows for extra-quick jackrabbit starts), an Weight (kg): 1,600 accelerometer that measures lateral g-forces and an acceleration timer.

HONDA ODYSSEY
Honda’s popular minivan received some significant interior/ exterior revisions for 2014, along with added structural support for added crash protection; base models arrive with plenty of features; the top-line model tops them all with a built-in vacuum cleaner.
HONDA FIT
Honda’s small carryall has evolved to a point where it could almost pass for a Civic wagon. Drivetrain: A 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine makes more power than previous Fit did; choose from a sixspeed manual transmission or optional fuel-saving CVT.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Drivetrain: All trim levels use a 248-horsepower V6 with cylinder deactivation to save fuel, six-speed automatic transmission.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Base price (incl. destination): $31,900 Type: Four-door minivan Engine (hp): 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (248) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: 6-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.3/8.5 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 2,000
Honda prices the Odyssey at the premium end of the spectrum, but that hasn’t dissuaded buyers who year after year have made this minivan a best seller. For the 2014 model year, the Odyssey minivan became more competitive via upgrades for base models that included a six-speed automatic transmission to replace the five-speed unit. The six-speed transmission was formerly the domain of up-level trims. The carryover 248-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 comes with variable-cylinder-management that cuts out two or three of the cylinders under light-load conditions for improved fuel economy. For 2015, the Odyssey for Canada is available in a whopping seven trims, although four of them are “EX” models with variations on the theme. Base LX models arrive well turned out with dual-zone air conditioning, seven-passenger seating and a rear-view camera. Progressing up the line eventually lands you at the Touring with its self-leveling headlights, 16.2-inch rear video screen (bigger than the average the laptop computer screen), 650-watt 12-speaker surround-sound system and the now-infamous “HondaVac” built-in 12-volt vacuum cleaner positioned at the rear of the van. The Touring costs $50,000 and includes crash-mitigation technology such as forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. Visually, the Odyssey received the type of mid-cycle updating that’s common in the auto industry, highlighted by a restyled front and rear end plus an updated instrument and control panels.
Base price (incl. destination): $16,200 Type: Four-door wagon Engine (hp): 1.5-litre DOHC I (130) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: 6-speed manual; 5-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.0/5.7 (CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight (kg): 1,130
The all-new Fit sticks to a proven formula: keep the size and weight in check; keep the body lean and spacious; and keep drivers and passengers thinking they’re ensconced in a vehicle that’s larger than it actually is. Despite being physically and dimensionally similar, the Fit actually looks bigger, thanks to more prominent body creases and fenders that bulge out around the wheel openings. The wraparound headlight pods integrate with the grille and no longer extend alongside the hood. The taillights are enlarged and the squared-off liftgate glass helps emphasize the width. The Fit’s interior remains a marvel of practicality. Passenger volume has been modestly increased and rear-seat legroom lengthened by 8.0 centimetres, primarily due to the new chassis and more compact rear suspension. A new 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine makes 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, compared to 117 horses and 106 pound-feet of torque for the previous 1.5. A six-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable unit (CVT), directs power to the front wheels. The CVT helps the Fit achieve 7.0 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway with the CVT, or 8.4/6.4 with the six-speed manual. The base DX is admittedly pretty basic, but the next-rung-up LX includes air conditioning, power windows, cruise control and a floor console. Atop the top of the Fit line, the EX-L Navi comes with a power moonroof, climate control, leather-covered seats, multi-angle rearview camera (a basic rearview camera is standard) and a voice-controlled navigation system.
When is seat belt replacement necessary? Although seat belts do not degrade as quickly as parts of a vehicle that need frequent servicing, there are some instances when seat belts should be replaced. Seat belts, like car seats and air bags, are considered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to be single-use items. Seat belts are designed to work just once protecting and immobilizing a passenger in the event of a crash. They have a pretensioner, which reels back slack on the seat belt. Pretensioners preemptively tighten the belt to prevent the
Is your
Anti-Freeze good to go?
occupant from jerking forward in a crash. They can be activated in a bad crash or any crash severe enough to deploy an air bag. Seat belts also are equipped with locking retractors, which afford the seated occupant some movement while still providing a means to limit movement in the event of a crash. It’s adviseable to replace any seat belts that were in use during a crash to ensure the belts will offer the same measure of protection should a collision occur in the future.

HONDA CIVIC
The Civic sedan takes a rest for 2015 after a couple of years of serious dialing in.
HONDA CR-V
Drivetrain: Pick your powerplant, including a gas-electric Hybrid, a 140horse four-cylinder and a 201-horsepower four-cylinder in the sporty Si. Honda surprised the world when it gave its one-year-old ninth-generation Civic a structural and styling adjustment for the 2013 model. The model stays the same for 2015, but Honda has shown that it isn’t afraid to make adjustments on the fly to any of its models. Although the lower-volume Civic coupe was left alone, the sedan’s alterations included Base price (incl. destination): completely new front and rear bodywork encompassing $17,400; $20,600 (coupe); a more prominent grille, restyled hood and new fog lights, $28,700 (hybrid) corner lights and taillights. Changes were also initiated to Type: Two-door coupe, four-door sedan improve the Civic’s front-end crash protection, especially at Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre SOHC I4 (140) each corner, allowing it to pass new partial front-end crash test standards with flying colours. Other adjustments were Optional engine (hp): 2.4-litre applied to the suspension and steering components as well DOHC (201); 1.5-litre SOHC I4 with as soundproofing materials to improve ride comfort, reduce 23-horsepower electric motor cabin noise and create a sportier driving experience. Finally, (110, combined) sedans and coupes equipped with automatic transmissions were fitted with larger front brakes. The new dash has fewer Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive creases and angles than before and most plastic surfaces Transmissions: 6-speed manual; have been replaced with soft-touch materials. Returning for 6-speed automatic (opt.), 2015 is the standard 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylincontinuously variable (Hybrid) der engine, with the optional 201-horsepower four-cylinder repeating in the performance-oriented Si. Similarly, the 110l/100 km (city/highway): horse 1.8 continues to power the natural-gas-fueled sedan, 7.9/6.1 (CVT) while the gas-electric Civic Hybrid’s powertrain producing Safety: Front airbags; side-impact 110 horsepower also carries over. The Hybrid now includes airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock forward-collision alert and accidental-lane-departure warning brakes; traction control; stability control systems (both are options in other Civics). The base powerplant mates to a five-speed manual transmission or optional Weight (kg): 1,230 five-speed automatic. A six-speed manual gearbox goes to the Si and a continuously variable unit is for the Hybrid.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Honda’s perennial compact tall wagon receives a number of mid-life interior/ exterior updates plus a touch more power. Drivetrain: A revised 2.4litre four-cylinder engine makes the same 185 horsepower, but torque increases 11 per cent. A new continuously variable transmission becomes standard; all-wheel-drive available on all trim levels.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $27,600 Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicle Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (185) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Continuously variable l/100 km (city/highway): 8.6/6.9 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,530
The CR-V has established itself as a can-do wagon that combines smart looks, lively performance and impressive fuel economy. For its mid-cycle refresh, the CR-V receives a new front fascia (grille, bumper and headlight pods), taillights and wheel designs. Inside, there’s a redesigned dash and floor console layout and soft-touch materials for the door panels. Mechanically, an upgrade to direct injection (fuel sprayed under high pressure directly into the cylinders instead of through the intake manifold) for the CR-V’s 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine yields a torque increase to 181 pound-feet from the previous 163 rating, while horsepower remains at 185. In addition, a continuously variable transmission replaces the previous five-speed unit. As a result fuel economy improves slightly for front- and allwheel-drive models. Collectively these changes should help keep the CR-V atop the compact ute collective that also encompasses the Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue for members. Undoubtedly, the CR-V’s passenger comfort and generous cargo capacity will also help maintain the CR-V at the forefront, as will the fold-down backseat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the liftgate. Access through the rear makes it easy to load large/bulky items onto a flat load floor that can be extended to more than 1.5 metres. In base LX trim, the CR-V comes with a significant amount of standard equipment, including a centre console armrest, sliding sun visors and rear console ventilation ducts. Along with standard AWD, the SE adds pushbutton start, multi-angle rearview camera, heated front seats and an up-level audio system, while the EX includes a power-moonroof, dual-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Popping for the EX-L adds perforated leather seat covers, while the Limited bundles together all of the latest in safety technology such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, collision avoidance braking and Honda’s automatic emergency response system that will summon rescue assistance in the event of a mishap.

JEEP CHEROKEE
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $25,400 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184) Optional engine (hp): 3.2-litre DOHC V6 (271) Layout: Front-engine, rear-/four-wheel-drive Transmission: 9-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 10.9/7.7 (2.4 FWD) Safety: Front airbags; front/ rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,640
The Cherokee basks in its glorious return as Jeep hasn’t needed to change anything yet; still top-notch at navigating difficult on- and off-road terrain. Drivetrain: A Fiat-based 2.4-litre four-cylinder is supplemented by a 3.2-litre-V6 option; standard nine-speed automatic transmission helps reduce fuel consumption while three optional 4x4 systems supply a range of traction needs.
The Jeep Cherokee brand returned like a flaming phoenix and proved such a positive boost for everyone involved. Although contentious with some critics, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers took to create the Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise. The interior is also as modern as the outside. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.7- or 21.3-centimetre touch-screens, depending on the trim level, that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 2.4-litre four-cylinder worth 184 horsepower. Optional is a 3.2-liter V6 that’s rated at 271 horses. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to ninespeed automatic transmissions, which was the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheel-drive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in North and Limited, comes with a two-speed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. But for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by an inch), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.).
JEEP RENEGADE
And now for something completely different: an Italian-American 4x4 that takes Jeep’s off-roading expertise into the small zone. Drivetrain: Turbocharged and non-turbocharged four-cylinder engines as well as six-speed manual and nine-speed automatic transmissions; four-wheel-drive optional with either engine.
The Renegade is the smallest of Jeep’s sport utes, and by a long shot. It was designed in North America, but it’s being built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries. The front and rear body overhangs are practically non-exisBase price (incl. destination): tent (perfect for off-roading) and there’s plenty of space between $21,000 (est.) the tires and the fenders. The vehicle’s narrow width does place a premium on elbowroom, but the dash and control panel are Type: Four-door well laid-out, the oversized knobs are clearly marked and the sport-utility vehicle meaty steering wheel closely replicates what you’ll find in the Base engine (hp): larger Grand Cherokee. Base Renegades run with a 1.4-litre tur1.4-litre SOHC I4, bocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 turbocharged (160) pound-feet of torque. The non-turbo 2.4-litre option puts out 184 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The 1.4 turbo comes Optional engine (hp): with a six-speed manual transmission, while the 2.4 is matched 2.4-litre SOHC I4 (184) to a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive is standard on all Layout: Front-engine, but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk, while Active Drive four-wheel-drive front-/four-wheel-drive is optional. The system’s Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes are augmented by an exclusive Rock setting for the Trailhawk. Transmissions: 6-speed manual (std. 1.4 turbo); Additionally, the Trailhawk comes with a low-range 20:1 crawl-ratio gearing, unique wheels with all-terrain tires plus other off-road 9-speed automatic (std. 2.4) goodies. Renegades equipped with either drivetrain should prove l/100 km (city/highway): reasonably thrifty with just 1,400 or so kilograms to move around. 8.0/6.0 (est.) A gas-saving automatic axle disconnect feature for 4x4 models will reengage the rear wheels when maximum traction is required. Safety: Front airbags; sideThe base Renegade Sport includes only the bare essentials, while curtain airbags; side-impact up-level models add roof rails, fog lights and touch-screen audio airbags; driver’s knee airbag; and hands-free Bluetooth communications controls, dual-zone anti-lock brakes; traction climate control, heated leather-trimmed seats (including eightcontrol; stability control way power driver’s seat) and 18-inch wheels (16- and 17-inchers Weight (kg): 1,370 come on lower trims). The optional MySky dual glass roof panels can be removed to maximize the open-air experience.

AN INTEGRAL PART OF DEFENSIVE DRIVING
(MS) - Safety is foremost on the minds of many drivers. Automobile accidents can be detrimental to a driver’s health as well as his or her wallet, causing potentially costly damage to vehicles and resulting in higher insurance premiums. Driving defensively is a great way for drivers to reduce their risk of accident, but even the most cautious drivers are not entirely immune to collisions or fender benders. Thankfully, drivers can do more than exercise caution to improve
their overall safety on the road. • Minimize distractions. Cautious drivers are always on the lookout for more careless motorists with whom they share the highways, but those same drivers may not realize they’re creating distractions within their own vehicles. Loud music blaring on car stereos, fuzzy dice or trinkets hanging from rearview mirrors and cluttered vehicle interiors can take a driver’s attention away from the road, decrease his

or her visibility or make it more difficult to effectively operate a car or truck, each of which can increase a driver’s risk of accident. Limit such distractions inside your vehicle and ask any passengers to keep their voices low when coming along for a ride.
• Utilize automotive technology.
Advancements in automotive technology have done much to make driving safer, but such advancements are not limited to rearview camera systems or other increasingly popular vehicle accessories. Philips Vision LED Lights employ new technology that is designed to replace the standard incandescent bulbs that most vehicles use for brake lights, taillights and backup lights. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs that may take a little time to light up, Vision LED lights turn on instantly, helping to increase driver visibility. In addition, having brake lights that illuminate instantly makes it easier for other drivers to react to any sudden stops your vehicle may need to make.
• Make your car a smartphone-free zone. Smartphones have become so prevalent that many people may feel as though their smartphones are an extension of themselves. While smartphones can make life easier, they also can make driving more dangerous. When
driving, store your smartphone in the glove compartment so you can avoid the temptation to read incoming emails or text messages when stuck in traffic or traversing busy highways.
• Choose lasting safety upgrades. Drivers concerned about the safety of their vehicles often choose to upgrade their lights to protect themselves and their passengers. Capable of handling extreme heat and high vibrations, Philips Vision LED Lights include a 12-year limited warranty, whereas traditional incandescent bulbs typically last just a few years before they need to be replaced. When making safety upgrades to your vehicle, make sure such upgrades are not just temporary adjustments but long-lasting changes that contribute to you and your passengers’ long-term safety.
New Philips Vision LEDs turn on instantly for greater driving safety.

RAM 1500
Ram offers the most attractive and clever touches in the light-duty class, and the most options under the hood as well. Drivetrain: Chrysler’s 3.6litre V6 and 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is joined by 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to respectable levels.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $29,100 Type: Two-/four-door pickup Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (305) Optional engines (hp): 3.0-litre DOHC V6, turbo-diesel (240); 5.7-litre OHV V8 (395) Layout: Front-engine, rear-/four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic (3.6, 3.0, opt. on 5.7); six-speed automatic (5.7) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.9/9.3 (3.6, 4x2); 11.6/8.4 (diesel); 15.8/10.9 (V8, 8AT) Safety: Front airbags; impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 2,080
Who would have guessed that the macho Ram 1500 would ever trumpet its fuel performance? That was partially addressed when Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 found its way into the engine bay along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The latter can also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8, but 4x4 models come with a six-speed auto. The big engine can shut down four of its eight cylinders when not needed, such as at under light-load conditions or when heading downhill. The most unique engine is the optional 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty diesel pickup in North America. Using the same figures as for the Jeep Grand Cherokee -- 240 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque -- with the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 3,270 kilograms. Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance with stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Electric power steering cuts parasitic power losses. Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 1.5 centimetres to cut the wind a bit better. Finally, a “thermal management system” is designed to quickly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational temperatures, which assists in conserving gas. As for body styles, regular-cab models are available with a six-foot, four-inch box, or an eight-footer, while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” bed, or the six-foot, four-inch bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 355-millilitre cans that can be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches for include a capless fuel-filler system and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park the “Beast” into incredibly tight spots.

GMC CANYON
A mid-size companion to the Sierra joins the GMC fleet; similar to the Chevrolet Colorado, but squarer with a bit more base content. Many people will remember the winter of 2013-14 for all the wrong reasons. Record low temperatures and heavy snowfall were the story last winter. With winter now on the horizon once again, many motorists are looking for ways to ensure their daily commutes or holiday trips to visit family and friends are as safe as possible. When wintry conditions, including snowfall, compromise driving conditions, it’s best for motorists to stay home. But avoiding roadways altogether is not always an option, so motorists who simply must venture out onto the roadways this winter can employ the following strategies to ensure they safely arrive at their destinations. • Consider winter tires. Many drivers are unsure if they need winter tires. All-season tires may suffice for those drivers who live in regions where heavy snowfall is uncommon. But winter tires are designed to perform when the temperatures are especially cold and in driving conditions featuring ice, slush and snow. Drivers who live in regions where snowfall is significant or even expected to be significant may want to install winter tires just to be on the safe side. Some drivers mistakenly believe that vehicle features such as anti-lock braking systems and traction control make their tires more capable of handling wintry roads. But such features do not provide more traction. ABS and traction control only prevent drivers from over-braking or overpowering the traction of their tires. Only better tires will improve traction. • Drive slowly. Many drivers mistakenly believe they only need to drive slow when snow is falling. But winter weather can make roadways unsafe even in areas that have not witnessed a single snowflake
fall from the sky. Wet winter roads can quickly turn into icy winter roads, and no ABS system or traction control device can prevent a car that’s traveling too fast from skidding out. Poor visibility is another reason to drive slowly in winter. Peripheral vision is often compromised when driving in winter, as dirt, salt or sand buildup on windshields and side windows and mirrors can make it hard for motorists to fully view their surroundings. Even if your vision is not compromised, a fellow motorist’s might be. So ease up on the gas pedal in winter so you have more time to react to potentially adverse conditions. Wintry conditions often make driving especially hazardous. But drivers who adopt certain habits when driving in winter can greatly reduce their risk of accidents.
Winter storms often make for unsafe driving conditions, and motorists must alter their habits when making winter trips.

When it comes to trucks and sport utility vehicles, General Motors tends to do things in pairs. Both the Chevrolet and GMC divisions share many similar, but moderately restyled vehicles wearing different nameplates, including the new-for-2015 Canyon and its Chevy iteration, the Colorado. After being cancelled following the 2012 model year, both pickups are back for 2015 in bigger and more powerful forms. Of course they’re still smaller and less capable than the full-size GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado. For many pickup buyers, however, they have plenty to offer, whether it’s the four-door extended-cab with 62-inch box, or the four- (full) door crew cab that comes with a 50-inch, or available 62-inch bed (sorry, no regular-cab versions this time). Each style can be ordered with a 200-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder or a 305-horsepower V6. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the V6. Interestingly, the V6 comes very close to matching the four-cylinder in the fuel-economy department (11.9 l/100 km in the city and 8.8 highway for the four-cylinder versus 13.0/9.2 for rear-wheeldrive models). It’s also the one to buy when hauling payloads up to 725 kilograms or towing up to 3,175 kilograms (double the 2.5’s capacity). Canyons can be had in base SL, SLE and SLT trim levels. SLE trims equipped with the Autotrac (drivers can select four-wheel-drive themselves or allow the system to engage it automatically) are available with an off-road suspension package, locking rear differential, all-terrain rubber, automatic transmission and hill-descent control. All Canyons come with a power driver’s seat, corner steps built into the rear bumper, locking tailgates and two-tier loading that, by sliding braces and a platform that you supply, creates two separate cargo areas. There are, of course, a plethora of options and packages for the Canyon, including leather seats (heated in front), 20-centimetre touchscreen/navigation, and a factory-installed spray-on bed liner. For added safety, a forward collision alert and lane departure warning features can be added (a rear-vision camera is standard). For the 2016 model year, you’ll be able to select a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel option.

Visibility is an essential component of automotive safety. According to the United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, inability to clearly see the road, other motorists and potential obstacles is a leading contributor to automotive accidents and injury. Approximately half of all fatalities due to motor vehicle crashes occur at night, even though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that traffic volume is substantially less at night. Lack of visibility, which may result from a dirty windshield or inclement weather, can render pavement markings nearly invisible or throw off drivers’ senses of direction. One of the best ways to ensure maximum visibility is to keep your windshield clean. Not all windshield washer fluids and wipers are created equally. For example, some washer fluids are ineffective in freezing temperatures. Frozen washer fluid can cause a complete blockage of the system and greatly impair visibility. As anyone who has driven on snowy and/ or salty roads can attest, such substances can quickly gather on windshields, where they crust up and impede visibility. A windshield cleaning system that is not working effectively
is a recipe for an accident. In addition to maintaining an obstruction-free washer fluid system, drivers can reduce accidents from poor visibility by heeding these tips from The National Weather Service: • Clear your windshield and mirrors before getting on the road. • Drive slow to maintain a safe stopping distance. • Be aware that, when driving in conditions where visibility is impaired, drivers tend to follow the tail lights of the vehicles in front of them. Keep your headlights on to improve your own visibility and help others see your car. • Don’t slow down so much that you become a hazard to other drivers. • If necessary, pull off the road and wait for conditions to improve. When pulling off, park as far off the road as possible, then turn off your headlights and put on your hazard lights.
Maintain a clean windshield to ensure your visibility is not compromised while driving.

2015 Auto Preview Sunday, November 2, 2014 - The Morning Star Z15
The heavy hauling 2500 and 3500 (3/4-ton and one-ton) HD models have been redesigned and updated for 2015, just as their light-duty GMC counterparts were for 2014. Drivetrain: Base 360-horsepower 6.0-litre gasoline V8 is back with a version that can be switched to compressed natural gas; optional 6.6-litre turbo-diesel spools out 765 pound-feet of torque; sixspeed transmissions for all.
Selecting a big-rig Sierra over a similar Chevrolet Silverado HD mostly boils down to which body style you prefer since both pickups are identical beneath their new-for-2015 shiny sheetmetal. However one other important difference is that the GMC offers the luxury-laden Denali crew cab, in addition to the base, SLE and SLT trim levels. Chevrolet doesn’t. The usual cab styles return, but the extended-cab is replaced by a new double-cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. Both the 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes have been strengthened and the rear bumper has built-in recessed steps at the corners for easier bed access. All HD powertrains return unaltered for 2015. The base 6.0-litre gasoline V8 puts out 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. It can be optioned with a compressed-natural-gas fuel system, although you lose 59 horsepower and 47 pound-feet in the process. For serious grunt work, there’s the optional 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8 rated at 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. Both employ six-speed automatic transmissions: a GM-developed Hydramatic comes with the 6.0; and the turbo-diesel employs an Allison-built unit. Chevy mates its “smart exhaust brake system” to the turbo-diesel that, when the vehicle is coasting, holds compressed exhaust gasses inside the engine’s cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. The result is less wear and tear on the brake hardware and greater control for the driver, especially when hauling or towing heavy loads downhill. Included is a stability program that reduces a trailer’s tendency to wobble about, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an incline. For the 2015 model year, the HD’s maximum hauling capacity has increased to 3,508 kilograms from 3,275 and conventional towing capacity has similarly increased to 8,890 kilograms from 8,165. Fifth-wheel-capacity is up to 10,525 from 10,200. As is the case with all GMC pickups, the level of content, body and powertrain customization is practically limitless, guided only by your specific needs and budget.
Why new car technology has changed vehicle maintenance (NC) It’s always a thrill to drive off the lot in a brand new car. The vehicle looks good, feels good, and the odometer reading is next to zero. With this brand new start, many of us make a pledge to be a bit more devoted to vehicle maintenance. New vehicle technology, however, has changed how to maintain your vehicle properly, and keep the engine running well. To meet consumer demands for lower pricing and improved gas mileage, car manufacturers are changing the way they make engines. Many are using thinner, lighter materials and this change has placed increased demand on antifreeze/coolant to protect the cooling system from freezing, from boiling over – and from corrosion. “If you want to get years and years of reliable life from your new car, antifreeze must perform at a whole new level,” says Colin Dilley, director of technology at Prestone Products Corporation, a leading name in this field. “In fact, for almost 20 years we didn’t have to make any changes to our formula, which protected all makes and model of cars and light duty trucks. But to meet the needs of today’s vehicles we have added a new inhibitor package called Cor-Guard to prevent corrosion”. “So many dissimilar metals and alternative lightweight materials are combined in new engines today,” Dilley continues, “including cast iron, steel, cast aluminum, and aluminum alloys, so a whole new fluid was needed to inhibit corrosion. If you have a new car especially, always make sure that the antifreeze/coolant has the proper combination of high quality inhibitors.” What would happen without it? Two main problems could arise, he said. First, an improperly protected cooling system can result in perforation of the engine block at a hot spot due to cavitation corrosion, and if coolant seeps through to the combustion chamber, it can destroy an engine within minutes. This also contributes to poor heat transfer, higher coolant temperature and higher oil-and-engine head temperatures, which can lead to overheating and increased engine wear. “For all makes, models, and fluid colours,” Dilley points out, “a specialized anti-corrosion agent in your antifreeze/coolant prevents corrosion and provides longer engine life, letting you enjoy that new car feeling for longer.
ACCELERATION guzzles the most gas (NC) Accelerating is by far the thirstiest thing you can ask your vehicle to do. Hard, fast acceleration guzzles fuel and wears out your engine and tires quicker. You can minimize the need to accelerate by avoiding unnecessary slowdowns or hold-ups in the first place. Racing to a red light or stop sign and then braking at the last minute is a futile and costly habit that wastes fuel and wears out the brakes. Instead, take your foot off the accelerator well in advance of the intersection and coast toward it. The red light may turn green before you get there, so you won’t even have to stop. Underinflated tires also use more energy so be sure to maintain proper tire pressure during the fall and winter. Source: Natural Resources Canada. www.vehicles.gc.ca.

GMC’s giant-sized Yukon rigs are specialists at heavy hauling in all kinds of road conditions and with up to eight people on board. For 2015, they’re also better looking with sharply creased bodywork and a handsome grille for the standard versions and the extended-by-50 centimetres XL. As well there’s a unique nose for the Denali and Denali XL. Although both configurations can hold up to eight people, the XL’s extra space is completely dedicated to cargo room. Previous Yukons could hold up to nine people, but the three-person front bench is no longer part of the deal. Interior Yukon/Denali changes include a more fashionable dashboard and control panel complete with a five- or available 20-centimetre colour touch-screens that control the infotainment and communications systems. A smaller secondary screen is located between the gauges and also displays key info. Like most General Motors vehicles this year, Yukon comes with a wi-fi Internet connectivity for all aboard as part of a paid subscription through GM’s OnStar concierge/ emergency help system. For 2015, the Yukon and XL come with a new 5.3litre V8 that makes 355 horsepower, which is a gain of 35 from the previous engine. Key upgrades include direct fuel injection that can tailor the fuel entering the engine to the actual engine load and not just the revs per minute. The new 420-horsepower 6.2-litre V8, which is based on the Chevrolet Corvette engine with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, is a Denali exclusive. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission (previously a six-speed). Both regular- and extended-length models come in SLE, mid-level SLT and Denali trim levels with a wide assortment of gear specific to each package. Among the Denali’s numerous special touches are power fold-and-tumble second-row bucket seats, hands-free power liftgate (opens with a kicking motion below the bumper), wireless phone charging, heated and cooled leather seating surfaces, power adjustable pedals, heated windshield-washer system, automatic wipers, Bose-brand 10-speaker surround-sound audio system including (XM satellite radio) and climate control.
CHEVROLET COLORADO
General Motors gets its mid-size groove back after a two-model-year absence; extended and crew cabs available. Drivetrain: Base four-cylinder and optional V6 engines available with all cab styles, as is four-wheel-drive.
For hard-working, hard-playing people with moderate towing and hauling requirements, it doesn’t get much better than the new Chevrolet Colorado and close facsimile GMC Canyon pickups. Both return for 2015 (they were phased out after the 2012 model year) in bigger and more powerful forms, but remain smaller and less capable than the full-size Chevy Base price (incl. destination): Silverado/GMC Sierra. Still, for many pickup fans, they have plenty to offer, whether it’s the four-door extended-cab with a five-foot-two-inch $23,300 (157-centimetre) box, or the four-door crew cab that comes with a fourType: Four-door mid-size pickup foot-two-inch (127-centimetre) or available five-foot-two-inch (157-centimetre) bed. There is no regular-cab model available. Each cab style Base engine (hp): can be had with a 200-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, or optional 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (200) 305-horsepower V6. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with Optional engine (hp): the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (305) V6. Interestingly, the V6 comes very close to matching the four-cylinder Layout: Front-engine, in the l/100 km department (11.9 city and 8.8 highway for the four-cylinder versus 13.0/9.2 for rear-wheel-drive models). It’s also the one to rear-/four-wheel-drive buy when hauling payloads up to 725 kilograms or towing up to 3,175 Transmissions: kilograms (double the 2.5’s capacity). Colorados can be had in base, 6-speed manual; WT (Work Truck), LT and Z71 4x4 trim levels. The latter is equipped 6-speed automatic (opt.) with an off-road suspension package, locking rear differential, all-terrain l/100 km (city/highway): rubber, automatic transmission and hill-descent control. All Colorados come with a corner-step rear bumper (no need for an external stair to 12.2/9.1 (2.5 MT, RWD) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear access the bed), a locking tailgate and two-tier loading that, by sliding braces and a platform that you supply, creates two separate cargo side-impact airbags; side-curtain areas. (NC) Did you know that Canadian drivers use a lot more fuel in the wintertime? Here are four secrets to greener, more fuel-efficient and cost-effective winter driving from the experts at Natural Resources Canada: 1. Drive it – Despite what you may have heard about warming up your car before you head out, the most effective way to warm up your car is actually driving it. The truth is idling will not warm up many of the components that cause you to use more fuel. Wheel bearings, tires, suspension and driveline components only warm up when the vehicle is moving. For normal winter driving, no more than 30 seconds of “warm-up” idling is necessary before you drive. Just make sure you can see clearly through the windows and your view is not obstructed before you pull away. 2. Plug it in – Engines experience maximum fuel use, emissions and engine wear when cold, so use a block heater with a timer to reduce warm-up time. Usually turning the block heater on for two hours prior to start-up is sufficient.
The heater warms the engine coolant, oil and engine block so that all fluids will flow more easily. The engine is easier to start, warms up quicker and cold start wear is reduced. 3. Clear away snow – When snow is left covering your vehicle’s air vents, moisture is drawn into the car taking it take longer to defrost. By clearing away all the snow from your car, you can get on the road sooner and clearly see where you are going. 4. Assess the way you drive your vehicle – How fast and how aggressively you drive all have an impact on your fuel consumption. Slow down, car pool, save up errands for a single trip, take ploughed motorways and inflate your tires properly. All of these things will cut your fuel bill and reduce your emissions.

The #1 Oil Change
Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver
(MS) - The importance of maintaining a vehicle cannot be understated. In addition to protecting their financial investments, drivers who properly maintain their vehicles are also protecting themselves and their passengers. Many elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars running smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentially dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists. Old or poorly maintained headlights can be hazardous for a variety of reasons. When coupled with inclement weather, outdated or dirty headlights can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and other vehicles. In addition, drivers who struggle to see at night may find their visibility further compromised by older headlights that don’t provide the light they need to navigate their vehicles safely once the sun has gone down. Because headlights can have such a dramatic impact on driver safety, it’s important that motorists take the following steps to maintain their headlamps. Recognize when bulbs start to dim. As headlight bulbs age, their light output is reduced by the effects of humidity, electrical resistance, filament fatigue, and general usage. The result is dim bulbs that make it difficult for motorists young and old to see when driving at twilight and at night, when a driver’s visual acuity is naturally reduced by 70 percent. Drivers should pay attention to how their headlights are performing, replacing any bulbs that are no longer providing adequate light. Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. The Philips Upgrade
Headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of night vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the standard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, Upgrade Headlights create a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety. Buy the bulbs that match your driving habits. Some drivers spend a significant amount of time behind the wheel while others use their cars or trucks only to run errands or make short trips. When replacing bulbs that have dimmed, be sure to choose a bulb that fits your driving habits. Philips makes a headlight bulb for every type of driver, be it the daily commuter, the soccer mom or those drivers who only rarely take to the highway. Philips even makes a special headlamp for motorcycles that creates a unique orange reflection that helps distinguish the motorcycle from other vehicles on the road. Numerous studies have shown that roughly one-third of auto accidents occur at night, when driver visibility is most compromised. So in addition to maintaining their headlights, drivers should take the following steps to improve their visibility. Keep wiper blades fresh. Wiper blades should be changed every three months, as they can become brittle over time and, depending on their frequency of use, can wear out, especially on older vehicles with pitting on the windshield. When inspecting the wiper blades, remember to inspect your windshield washer as well, making sure that the washers are operating effectively and that the washer fluid basin has been refilled. Avoid hanging items that compromise visibility. Many drivers like to hang trinkets, fuzzy dice or personal photos from their vehicles’ rearview mirrors. Avoid hanging such items, which can prove distracting and restrict your view of the road. Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Dirty interior glass and mirrors make it difficult for drivers to see fellow motorists, so make removing any film buildup on such surfaces part of your routine vehicle maintenance.

TOYOTA TACOMA
Toyota is aiming to make its RAV4 compact tall wagon more convenient and refined with larger wheels and power options spreading lower through the line. Drivetrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and sixspeed automatic transmission, which falls in line with competitors such as the Ford Escape and the Hyundai Tucson.
Well into its fourth generation and Toyota is making sure its compact RAV4 brings more than just perceived reliability to the table. To do this, its design is rather impressive with all sorts of swoops and curves and an angry-looking nose. The RAV4 is similarly sized to the old third-gen model, but Toyota says there is more cargo room. Despite this, there is no option of the third-row seat or the V6 engine that was required when that seat was ordered. In fact, where the competing Ford Escape offers three different four-cylinder engines, the RAV4 only provides the carryover 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 179 horsepower. Fuel economy is good -- 10.0 in the city and 7.6 on the highway -- largely due to a six-speed automatic transmission with tall overdrive gearing to cut highway revs. The all-wheel-drive option is has Auto, Lock and Sport modes to suit specific traction and driving situations. Lock mode keeps half the power going to the back wheels as long as you’re driving slower than 40 km-h. Sport mode allows wider transfer of torque between the front and rear wheels (as much as half to the rear) than the Auto mode. That’s all well and good, but the real battleground these days is in interior fit and finish as well as technology. The RAV4 is awash with “soft-touch” materials and silver trim bits, which is pretty standard for this class. There are also eight standard airbags and a 16-centimetre screen that doubles as a monitor for the back-up camera, which is also standard. RAV4 is offered in the usual LE, XLE and Limited trim levels. Oddly perhaps, the LE comes with 17-inch steel wheels, which probably helps keep the starting price around 26 grand, but you do get air conditioning and some power features. The XLE adds a moonroof, roof rails and new 17-inch Superchrome wheels, while the Limited comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and opens up the door to a 576watt JBL-brand audio system.

Drivetrain: Holdover 2.7-litre four-cylinder and truck-specific 4.0-litre V6. After a long run of near-absence of competition, the Toyota Tacoma is getting the full court press from General Motors in 2015 with its all-new line of small pickups. Toyota has elected to leave well enough alone for 2015 as a new model arrives in about a year. Under the long hood rests a Base price (incl. destination): $25,300 base 159-horsepower four-cylinder engine. However if towing/ hauling is a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune Type: Two-/four-door mid-sized pickup of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. The Tacoma Base engine (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC I4 (159) comes in only extended Access-Cab and four-door DoubleOptional engine (hp): Cab models -- no regular cab for 2015 -- and your choice of rear-or four-wheel-drive for all. The box (available in two 4.0-litre DOHC V6 (236) lengths) floor and walls in all cases are made of composite Layout: Front-engine, plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also rear-/four-wheel drive get hose-out heavy-duty all-weather flooring and the radio Transmissions: 5-speed manual; doubles as the backup-camera monitor. For Canada, the start4-speed automatic (opt. on 2.7); er Tacoma is a rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder; it’s a pretty basic set of wheels. Upping the stakes to a 4x4 V6 Access-Cab 6-speed manual (std. on V6); (there is also a four-cylinder 4x4 model) will cost you about 30 5-speed automatic (opt. on V6) grand and comes with bucket seats, air conditioning, a center l/100 km (city/highway): console and tilt/telescoping steering. To dress up your Tacoma, 11.5/9.5 (2.7, MT, 4x2) you’ll need to add the Power Package (available on all models, Safety: Front airbags; side-impact whether 4x2 or 4x4, or four-cylinder or V6) that adds spangle-y exterior trim, power accessories, sliding rear widow, backup airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock camera and body-colored bumpers. Falling leaves present a beautiful safety hazard Autumn and driving seem to be tailor-made for one another, and they can be if motorists exercise caution when driving near fallen leaves
BY LEARNING THE FACTS (NC) Hybrid vehicles are a cross between traditional fuel-powered vehicles and electric vehicles. By combining an electric motor, a battery pack, as well as an internal combustion engine, hybrids deliver power to the wheels. Common technologies include idle stop, which allows the engine to automatically shut off and restart at stop lights. The electric motor takes over to prevent unnecessary idling while regenerative braking harnesses the energy used while braking to recharge the batteries. In many hybrids, the electric motor also
provides added power during acceleration and when added performance is needed. Some hybrids can also operate using only the electric motor and battery pack at low speeds. Because the electric motor replaces some of the work done by a traditional engine, and some hybrids can run as electric vehicles at low speeds, hybrids are ideal vehicles for individuals who travel predominantly in the city under stop-and-go conditions. Anyone interested in reducing their fuel consumption, emissions, impact on the environment and the price they pay at the pumps may find hybrids to be the answer. And the good news is hybrids are also making the grade with Natural Resources Canada in its annual rating of the most fuel efficient vehicles in Canada. In fact, over the past several years, hybrids have been recognized as the most fuel-efficient in a variety of different vehicle classes.
Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6.
scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle. Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.
CLOGGING
Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful displays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country. While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Understanding certain inconveniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves.
STAINING
Leaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint. It’s important to manually pick leaves off of the car’s surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can
Leaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding flow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the windshield wipers should be removed. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting. Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe.
SLIPPER Y SURFACES
The Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the surface of roadways can be hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off-ramps more carefully. Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fill potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing damage to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them. Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

Canada adopts real world, five-cycle fuel consumption test methodology (NC) The federal government has updated the methods used to calculate fuel consumption ratings for new light-duty vehicles to better reflect real-world driving conditions and behaviours. Beginning with the 2015 model year, vehicle manufacturers will be required to use the improved testing procedure, known as five-cycle testing. Instead of using the long-established two-cycle tests for stop-and-go city driving and highway
and rural road driving, the updated method includes three additional test cycles to account for air conditioning usage, cold weather operation and driving at higher speeds with more rapid acceleration and braking. As a result of the new five-cycle testing, fuel consumption ratings will actually increase by about 15 per cent for most vehicles compared to the two-cycle ratings, according to Natural Resources Canada. Values may increase by even more for some vehicle technologies. NRCan
points out this is not because manufacturers are producing less fuel-efficient vehicles; it is because the five-cycle test accounts for more factors that better simulate real-world driving conditions and behaviours. Fuel consumption ratings help consumers compare the fuel consumption of different vehicles for both city and highway driving. Ultimately, the ratings are intended to give vehicle buyers comparative information about the fuel consumption of different models based on standard tests.
VERNON
The ratings appear on EnerGuide labels that are affixed to new vehicles at new car dealerships and on Natural Resources Canada’s website. A vehicle’s actual fuel consumption will vary from published ratings, depending on how, when and where a vehicle is driven. If you’re wondering why you’re not getting the advertised fuel consumption ratings for your vehicle, it could be because of the way you drive. You can brush up on some fuel-efficient driving habits on the NRCan vehicles.gc.ca website as well.
