OPINION
Coming a long way October, with all its colours of old gold and burnished tangerine, has come and gone. I turn another calendar page over on my kitchen calendar, pausing a moment to admire the close up of the awesome bird in flight pictured on the November Treena Mielke page. On The Other Side I look outside at the bare and naked trees. Everything is the colour of grey, I think, hugging my grey sweater around me as if to prove a point. November. The year is almost over. Hmmm! That would be me reflecting! Another year has almost passed into history and what have I done? What have I accomplished other than figure out how to get NETFLIX on both the TV and the Wii?! Nothing, I sigh, momentarily luxuriating in selfdefeating morose. But then I remember in a lightbulb ‘aha’ moment. One year ago in October I quit smoking! I recall the moment with pride, tinged only slightly with surprise that I actually listened to myself and quit. I remember the night and grinding the cigarette out in the parking lot with the heel of my shoe. I probably remember that moment because of the shoes. They were very cute; little black ones with sharp high heels that tap smartly when I walk like I know where I’m going, which is ironic because I usually don’t. Anyway, it was a dark October night, illuminated only by a map of stars spread invitingly across a dark velvet blanket of sky. It was, of course, also lit just a tiny little bit by the glowing tip of my cigarette. I was gazing at the map of stars while standing in the parking lot of the Rimbey Hospital enjoying a final drag of my cigarette before I went into the ‘I Quit’ class which I had high hopes would horrify me
into actually quitting. But, I wasn’t there yet. I liked smoking. Smoking was my reward for when I finished an interview, before I started one and when I was thinking about actually doing one. And it was also my reward for when I finished work, and my friend when I got in my car and when I had a good day and, most importantly, when I had a bad day. Smoking had been a part of my life off and on since I was 13-years-old. In reality, I was a kid, only 13 for crying out loud, but I wasn’t satisfied with that status quo. I wanted to look older and act older and be older. I figured that would make me cool and sophisticated. Smoking might do it, I reasoned, and as luck would have it, my soon to be sister-in-law, who was 19 at the time, obligingly gave me smokes and even taught me how to wear bright red lipstick and pin curl my hair just like the big girls. So as it turned out before I started smoking, I was still a kid happily playing ball with my brothers or diligently hauling wash water for my big sister. Water
actually coming from taps had not yet come to our little town, at least if it had, my family didn’t know about it. I filled two cream cans with water and balanced them precariously on a little wagon and hauled them to her house, carefully, so as not to spill a precious drop and she paid me 25 cents each time I successfully made the delivery. So I played ball and hauled water, but now I did one more thing. I smoked. Here I was a grown up lady dragging on a tailor-made Players filter tip cigarette, leaving bright red lipstick stains on the filtered tips, just like the big girls. And as that advertisement said, “I’d come a long way, baby.” But, on October of 2013, that all changed. That final drag I took of that cigarette turned out to be the final drag of any cigarette that has since passed between my lips. And now I am living proof that advertisement is true! I have come a long way!
The day that didn’t change Canada Peter Stockland Troy Media
Toronto Liberal MP John McKay was, at that moment, the admirable embodiment of the honest politicians who lead us. “That is an excellent question,” he said. “I have absolutely no idea what the answer is.” We were standing at the corner of Metcalfe and Albert streets in Ottawa, a few hundred metres south from where a gunman was shot dead in the Hall of Honour of Canada’s Parliament and a few blocks west of the War Memorial, where Hamilton-based soldier Nathan Cirillo had just been murdered by that same gunman. The question put to McKay was the obvious ambient mystery of the day: how on earth, after killing Cirillo in broad daylight, could that gunman have made his way onto Parliament Hill carrying a loaded long gun, then gotten past Parliamentary security into the building itself? Because of the location of the Liberals’ weekly caucus meeting room, McKay and his colleagues were able to exit the building, unlike their Conservative and New Democrat counterparts who barricaded themselves inside rooms that flank the entrance hallway where the shooting occurred. He was close enough, though, to hear the “pop, pop, pop” of gunfire — “more than three, fewer than 10” — which he thought was the sound of construction work before he was ordered to dive for cover. And, having made his way to safety, what was McKay doing? His duty. He was standing patiently talking to a group of reporters in a “scrum,” trying his best to explain what had just happened, openly ac-
knowledging what he did not know. To state the blindingly obvious, he was experiencing shock from the terror mere moments old. He had to fight to control tears. Yet he did his polite, deferential, instinctive duty to communicate, through the media, what he could to his fellow citizens. Another ambient mystery already percolating even as police teams swarmed through cordoned-off downtown Ottawa hunting no-one-knew-what was: Will this change us? Will we be a different Canada the day after than we were in the minutes before the killing of Nathan Cirillo, the gunfire assault on our Parliament? Watching the sheer, utter normalcy of John McKay dutifully answering questions at the confluence of the chaos, I knew the answer was “no.” It won’t change us. Why? Because we are Canadians. To say that we are Canadians is not to say that we imagine ourselves as some agglomeration of super heroes — or hyper stoics — immune from the vicissitudes of an outside world gone mad. To say that would be to say that being Canadian is being delusional. In our hearts, if not always on our lips, we acknowledge we have no such immunity. To pretend we believe otherwise is either myth making or mischief making or both. We know, in our present moment and in our history, that we are indelibly, painfully marked by the world. Nathan Cirillo was guarding our War Memorial when he was killed. In less than three weeks, on November 11, we will lay wreaths there as an act of memory for those who died doing their duty all along the boundary where the world touches Canada. We will be reminded, contra myth makers and mischief makers, that we are a people who fight and die to stand on guard.
We are known as a polite and deferential people, because by and large we are. During Wednesday’s events, a group of us snuck up to a spot outside the National Arts Centre to watch activity at the police command post. Spotting us, an officer rushed over and ordered us out, telling us that we were putting ourselves in danger. “You don’t have to shout,” I said. “There was nothing that said we couldn’t be here.” “I’m sorry,” he said, “but you’ll have to move.” I’m sorry but you’ll have to move. In the middle of that emotional tinderbox. I have been in other countries where the response in such tense circumstances was a gun barrel pointed at my head. Though we are dutifully deferential, however, we do not defer to fear. We never have. I believe we never will. There is something in us, as people, that will not admit it. Sure, there will be reviews and inquiries and reports and reassuring sounds that we’re looking into it so it never happens again. Sure, there will be “security upgrades” for access to Parliament Hill, whatever that means in an age where, as Wednesday’s events proved yet again, security means enduring time-consuming inconvenience to obtain the illusory comfort of the impossible. But we will not be changed by fear. And if the question of how that is possible when much of the rest of the world reacts by hunkering down, blockading in, assuming the protective position, is put to us, we will answer, following the admirable lead of our honest politicians: “That is an excellent question. We have no idea what the answer is. We’re just being Canadians.” Peter Stockland is Senior Director, Publications and Media with Cardus, and publisher of Convivium.

GABRIELLA’S STORY Our family has always supported STARS through the calendar and lottery campaigns, but on April 20, 2010, the meaning of STARS in our life took on an entirely new meaning. It was early that morning that our daughter Gabriella was born by emergency Cesarean section at Red Deer Regional Hospital and at only 29 weeks gestation. She was tiny at just over 3 lbs and her lungs had not yet fully developed. There was such panic and fear that day that I remember only parts of it. One of the most distinct memories I have of that day was how quickly the STARS crew was there to help. I remember the sense of concern in the ICU that changed completely when the À LJKW FUHZ DUULYHG EULQJLQJ D VHQVH of calm and purpose to the process. The crew had been mobilized from the Foothills Hospital before Gabriella was even born and included an ICU nurse, pediatric respiratory therapist and paramedics; a highly skilled group that operated with speed and precision to have Gabriella’s chest tube inserted and an IV line put into an arm that was no bigger than my thumb. The other most prominent memory I have LV IROORZLQJ WKH FUHZ WR WKH À LJKW GHFN in Red Deer to watch Gabriella loaded into the helicopter. I will never forget
the pilot walking over to me and putting his hands on my shoulders. He said, “Dad, we’re going to have your baby on the ground at Foothills Hospital in 25 minutes. You can’t beat us there, so take your time and drive safely. Gabriella spent a total of 45 days in the hospital after she was born, until she was strong enough to come home. My experience in pediatric audiology in the past always had me wondering if there would be complications later in life, maybe with her vision, hearing or development. Gabriella is now 4 years old, she shows no effects of her early arrival. She is incredibly bright, already learning to read and write and normally developing in every way. She loves the outdoors and has always had a sense of adventure, and I often wonder if it has something to do with her start in life, riding in the helicopter when she was only minutes old. Today when we drive by the hospital, she always looks for the red helicopter and says, “Where’s the helicopter Daddy? I think there are some tiny babies in there, just like me. For that, we will always be truly thankful and a proud supporter of STARS Air Ambulance.

Rimbey RCMP continue to monitor individuals on parole very carefully Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 71 files this reporting period. Highlights include three more impaired driving charges, break and enters, a sudden death, several assaults, collisions, trespassing and other serious matters. Back in jail Rimbey RCMP have been monitoring individuals in the community on parole and probation orders to ensure they have been abiding by their release conditions. Two more offenders were charged this week for not following the judges’ orders and found themselves back in jail. Dangerous driver A concerned citizen called police to report a reckless driver on an ATV near the Rimbey Gas Plant. Police responded to the area and located the suspect driving on a Range Road. The driver of the ATV fled from police when the officer turned on the emergency lights and siren
to stop the four-wheeler. Police did not pursue the dangerous driver and instead returned to Rimbey and sat quietly in an alleyway and waited. Within 10 minutes, the culprit was arrested trying to sneak back into town. The 30-year-old accused, a resident of Rimbey, has been charged criminally for his actions and now has four flat tires to repair after he drove over a police spike belt! Three drunks arrested Mounties continue to target impaired drivers and arrested three more drunks behind the wheel this week. In one case, the 18-year-old driver, a resident of Rimbey, had several youths in the vehicle with him when he was arrested. Fortunately, police were vigilant and out patrolling the streets and highways and intercepted this dangerous driver before anything tragic happened. In another matter, a 49-year-old woman, a resident of Rimbey, was arrest-

ed at approximately 4:30 in the afternoon driving her 1998 Honda Accord around town. The accused in this case, blew nearly 4X times the legal limit! Again, the Judge imposed stiff sentences for impaired driving offences on the last court date including jail and fines exceeding $3,000. No foul play in death On October 24, police attended a residence in Rimbey to check on the welfare of a man who had not been seen or heard from in several days. Officers found the 46-year-old man deceased in his residence. The subsequent police and coroner’s investigation revealed that there was no foul play involved in the death. Mounties on lookout for thief On Tuesday, October 28, at approximately 3 p.m., a thief drove into acreage on Highway 53 east of Rimbey and asked the kind owner of the residence if he could use his phone. The man generously offered the man his cell phone to make a call and then stepped into the kitchen to make his visitor some tea. When the homeowner returned from the kitchen, he found the cell phone, wallet and a brief case he owned had been stolen by the passer-by. Police were already seeking the fugitive who was driving a stolen truck from Red Deer that had been lifted earlier in the day. The investigation has re-
vealed that this thief likely committed numerous crimes in Central Alberta in the hours prior to this offence. Police are following up on leads at this time as the investigation continues. Rifle hunting season open Rifle hunting season in most parts of the detachment area opened on November 1. RCMP and Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officers will be patrolling rural areas to ensure that all hunters are following the rules. Please read and understand all the regulations and follow them. As a reminder, it is unlawful to have ammunition in your firearm while in your vehicle or to shoot from, along or across any roadway. It is also against the law to shoot within 200 metres of a residence unless you have permission from the homeowner to do so. If Bullwinkle has a saddle on him - don’t shoot! Have a safe and successful hunting season. Council looks at replacement of the lighting on Main Street By Treena Mielke Keeping the lights glowing and bright on Rimbey’s Main Street could turn out to be an expensive proposition for the town, but council might not have to bear the brunt of the project all at once. Stan Orlesky, General Stakeholder Relations Manager for FortisAlberta Inc., who attended Monday’s council meeting said the lights need to be replaced, a project that could cost around half a million dollars. Even though it is an expensive project something needs to be done, said Orlesky adding the contact box lights are faulty and the cable is falling and because of the age of the lights, replacement parts are difficult to locate. “The lights have outlived their life (span),” he said. At a council meeting he attended in 2012, Orlesky also addressed the problem with the lights, noting the approximately 40 high pressure sodium lights have to be turned off and on manually. The Fortis representative said the lights were originally installed by Alberta Transportation and later sold to the municipality. TransAlta took them over in the ‘90s. An agreement with Fortis and the town states the municipality pays a non-investment rate of 16 cents per fixture for some lights and an investment rate of 57 cents per day for others. Only the replacement of the bulbs and ballasts is included in the non-investment rate whereas replacements, repairs and maintenance is included in the investment rate. The possibility of replacing the lights in sections such as going from the four-way stop to Esso, then completing the section from the four-way stop west to the hospital, and finally the four-way stop north of Hwy. 20A was discussed. CAO Lucien Cloutier said he expects Orlesky will bring a proposal to him in the near future. “He and I can discuss it at that time and then I will bring it forward to council and see where that takes us. We would want to look at lights that are more electrically efficient,” he said. Cloutier said the issue could be part of the 2015 budget if it was brought forward before the end of the year.

Sharphead Nation remains find final resting place By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye
ed Crier. No policies dealing with First Nations remains Up until 1905, Alberta was part of the Northwest Territories and there was no policy detailing how to deal with human remains, let alone those that belonged to First Nations. Crier said her biggest challenge in repatriation was proving ownership. Crier says First Nations’ tradition is to return the remains to where they belonged but federal and provincial red tape, created a challenge. She said on the federal side, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada claimed this was out of their jurisdiction. After years of efforts, however, the remains were reburied. “It was still very emotional. There was a lot of closure,” said Crier. A wake was held in Maskwacis the day before the reburial with many in attendance. Members of the Samson Cree Nation facilitated the burial and wake due to their close proximity to the new burial site. Government officials, residents of Maskwacis and others attended the reburial on the 14-acres of land the Government of Alberta purchased. This is the same property Ponoka County councillors had zoning issues with the province. For Crier, seeing the remains find a final resting home was a time to honour those people who died many years ago.
“It was sad and happy at the same time. It just brought closure because they (the remains) were orphans. They had nobody to speak for them,” stated Crier. “We know that their spirits were happy,” she added. She plans to speak with the province on legislation. “My suggestion will be to create a process
and we will be doing that with the province.” She says the work ahead will take some time as amendments in the First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects Repatriation Act will need to be made. Members of First Nations across the country and Alberta legislation will also have to be considered.
Almost five decades ago the remains of 28 First Nations people were dug up on a property south of Ponoka with their future remaining uncertain, until now. The remains, mostly youths and children and a few adults, found a resting place west of Ponoka on Highway 53 Saturday, Oct. 18 thanks to the dedicated effort from members of the Samson Cree Nation. From 1965 to 1966, the University of Alberta exhumed 25 sets of human remains from 24 graves on Matejka Farms south of Ponoka. Nobody at the time knew what to do with them. Eventually they were taken to the University of Alberta for safekeeping. Later in 2007, the partial remains of two other individuals and one complete set of another were found by the then Calgary Power (now AltaLink), which was replacing an electrical pole. Some research showed that those remains belonged to the Sharphead people, inhabitants of a reserve in the area in the 1800s. New HVACs at community centre By Treena Mielke It could be a long, cold winter, but the public can rest assured the heating system at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre is being well maintained. Recently, three of the eight heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre were replaced by Rimbey Heating Ltd. Company owner Rod Challand said two engineered air units and a Bennox air unit have now been installed in the facility. The air unit which was put over the auditorium weighed 6,000 pounds and a 90-ton crane was needed to lift it into place, said Challand. The unit in the lobby was slightly smaller, but required more work to install as some roofing also needed to be replaced to put it into place. This spring Rimbey town council unani-

International quilters keep hand quilting art going strong By Treena Mielke Years ago pioneer women would get together for quilting bees, carefully hand stitching each tiny stitch on intricate designs with love and careful precision. As they worked, they would indulge in ‘women talk’, chatting and laughing and visiting. And as their needles flew, so did their chatter. And as they spent hours completing their handiwork, they sewed together not only beautiful quilts, but bonds of friendship that, more often than not, lasted forever. Today, it seems the art of hand quilting has been lost, disappearing along with wringer washers and coal and wood stoves and front verandas. However, if one was to visit the International Truck Museum in Rimbey on a Monday or a Tuesday morning, they would discover that hand quilting is not quite a lost art. Here at the truck museum, among the rows of International Trucks, one will find the International Quilters, a group of ladies who have continued to keep the art of hand quilting very much alive for the last 30 years. “It seems we have been quilting forever,” said Jean Warta. I would say at least for 30 years.” Warta, who came from Holland in 1957 said she didn’t know how to quilt when she first arrived in Rimbey. “They taught me in a hurry,” she said with a chuckle. “I couldn’t speak English when we first came,
but I listened and I learned. And I loved it, (the quiling) it was a great way to get to know the people.” In their years of quilting, the ladies have made many baby quilts for the Rimbey Hospital, donated quilts to FCSS, the Ronald McDonald House, and, also supplied quilts to other families who have suffered a loss such as a house fire. Presently the ladies are working on a quilt which was started by Bobbi Anderson, a well-known Rimbey native who passed away on Christmas Day, 2013. One of the quilters, Judy Frayn said all the squares of the quilt which has the Rose of Sharon pattern were embroidered by the late Bobbi Anderson. “It is very beautiful,” she said. “It has two shades of pink on a white background.” The quilt is large; nine and a half feet square, is fiber filled and has a sheeted back. “I couldn’t put a price tag on,” said Frayn. “It is going back to her family. Bobby was very gifted,” she added. The International Quilters are hoping to finish the Rose of Sharon quilt by November and, no doubt, will then take a break for Christmas. But one can be sure when the new year rolls around, they will be hard at work again, busily making a new quilt that may, one day, be tenderly tucked around a tiny infant or placed lovingly around the knees of an elderly shut in. One can be sure that wherever the quilt goes, it will have been hand quilted by a group of ladies who have kept alive not only the age old tradition of hand quilting, but the unspoken rules of friendship and caring.

Bethany Care workers protest rollbacks Red Deer – Seniors care workers held a lunchtime information picket at Bethany Care Society’s Red Deer facility last week to protest their employer’s proposal to extensively roll back their compensation and working conditions. “These kinds of cutbacks threaten the quality of care for seniors who depend on the relationships they have built with long-serving employees,” said AUPE Vice President CarrieLynn Rusznak. “We believe that a fair agreement that can attract and retain quality staff is a win-win for workers, residents and their families.” Bethany employees and other supporters conducted an information picket and handed out hotdogs and refreshments at the Red Deer facility, located at 99 College Circle from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday Oct. 29. Bethany Care Society is one of western Canada’s largest long-term care and supportive living providers. AUPE represents approximately 1,000 staff at six Bethany facilities in central
and southern Alberta. AUPE is currently in negotiations with the society, seeking standardized contracts that will establish equal terms and conditions for Bethany employees. “Bethany’s compensation is already below industry standards and further rollbacks will hurt staff and residents” said Rusznak. Bethany Care Society has confirmed to the union that all of the monetary provisions they are seeking to rollback are funded by Alberta Health Services. “They have provided no rationale for this move other than ‘because we can,” said Rusznak. “Holding back public funding intended for frontline workers is not the Alberta way.” “This move is an example of the systemic lack of accountability in seniors care that the Auditor General spoke out about earlier this month,” said Rusznak. “Bethany must be held accountable for how rollbacks affecting front line health workers will also jeopardize the quality care that Alberta seniors deserve.”

Defunct airport lights help finance skateboard park By Treena Mielke

The skateboard project for Rimbey could soon have $1,000 added to its coffers thanks to a deal now struck between council and Lacombe Flying Club. At its regular meeting Monday, council gave the green light to CAO Lucien Cloutier to contact the Lacombe Flying Club to make arrangements to remove the lights in exchange for a $1,000 donation to the Kinsmen Skateboard Park Project. Council agreed the deal would be beneficial for both parties. In a letter to Mayor Rick Pankiw, Dave Scott from the Lacombe Flying Club said members from the club will remove the lights/ posts from the runway at no cost.
“The runway will not be damaged in any way by the removal of the lights/posts, and the Lacombe members will ensure there are no hazards remaining that would interfere with aircraft landing at the airport,” he said. The airport lights were installed in the early ‘80s and some work was done on the system in 2006. However, the wiring has been damaged beyond repair due to rodents and insects. “If they’re gone, you’re not missing much,” said public works foreman Rick Schmidt. Cloutier has notified Transport Canada about the exchange and to ascertain the airport is licensed for landing only during daylight hours.
Development consultant to provide professional services to town By Treena Mielke Town council has given the green light to CAO Lucien Cloutier to bring in a development consultant on a shortterm basis. At its meeting, Oct. 23 council endorsed a recommendation by Cloutier to hire Dave Dittrick from ZAP Mu-
nicipality Consulting to address past, current and future development control needs. Council agreed to allocate $5,000 from unrestricted surplus to professional services for 40 plus hours of work to be provided by the consulting firm.
Family Counselling Available in Rimbey For everyone - regardless of beliefs
Counselling for individuals and families: • Communication • Anger Management • Grief • Addictions • Depression

Cloutier said ZAP Municipality Consulting is reputable and he expects to see a high level of performance from Dittrick. “Mr. Dittrick has completed very similar work for a number of municipalities in Alberta, including several in this area,” Cloutier said in his report to

council. While working for the town of Rimbey, Dittrick will give priority to development issues related to land allocated for the proposed new lodge, Legacy Court Phase 2 and registration of the walking trails. In his proposal, Dittrick said he will be able to assist the town with respect to bringing closure to several complex development files as well as providing advice and guidance to administration on an ‘as needed’ basis. He said he currently provides a similar service to the Town of Swan Hills and has had prior experience working with The Town of Stettler. NEED A

By Treena Mielke With another year as councillors under their belts, Rimbey town councillors are moving forward. During their organization meeting held Oct. 23, councillors made some changes and kept other meeting dates and town appointed positions status quo. Councillors agreed to hold committee of the whole meetings every second month, unless otherwise deemed necessary. “What is the true purpose of committee of the whole meetings?” questioned Coun. Matthew Jaycox. “They are set up to discuss issues, not meant to replace council meetings, said CAO Lucien Cloutier. “They are to allow council a chance to flesh out issues such as snow removal.” Council agreed additional meetings could be held if the issues involved at the time warranted
more discussion. Council set the date for committee of the whole meetings to be at 9 a.m. on the last Friday of every second month. Council meetings will continue to be held the second and fourth Monday of the month commencing at 7 p.m., excepting if a regularly scheduled meetings falls on a statutory holiday. When such a holiday occurs the meeting will be moved to the Wednesday of the same week. Council will hold only one regular meeting in July and August on the fourth Monday of the month and only one meeting in December on the second Monday of the month. Also at its organizational meeting council agreed to go with Seniuk & Company as its appointed auditors and Don Sheridan of Municipal Property Consultants Services as its assessor.

Town council, at its Oct. 23 meeting, ironed out a few wrinkles in a draft bylaw proposed by the CAO regarding the formation of an advisory committee whose purpose would be to look at ways to improve Rimbey’s downtown core. Such an advisory committee is the initial step in a proposed strategy which CAO Lucien Cloutier brought to council earlier. Once committee guidelines are established, the group would work within these guidelines to provide advice and recommendations to council on activities and programs designed to promote and enhance the downtown. While council seemed to like
the proposal, overall, a few changes will be implemented before it is given third reading. “I don’t like the idea that it says downtown,” said Mayor Rick Pankiw, adding that the bylaw should be more encompassing of the entire town. Council also agreed to delete the portion of the bylaw which stated committee members be paid an honorarium. Cloutier will make the proposed changes and bring the revised bylaw back to council. Mayor Rick Pankiw said Lucien Cloutier was asked to develop the downtown sustainability strategy when he was hired as CAO. “It is a plan to help Rimbey move forward,’ he said.

More improvements completed on historic Bentley hall By June Norvila
Bruce Anderson of Frontier Steam and hall volunteers Phil Walton and Arnold Kubista are busy building a new, bigger, better wheelchair ramp for the Bentley Community Hall. June Norvila Photo
The volunteer board of the historic Bentley Community Hall have just completed another improvement; this time to the exterior of the building. The old wheelchair ramp on the west side of the building has been torn off and replaced by a bigger, better, more easily accessible ramp. Many of the older shrubs and trees were removed and the area cleaned up. It had been hard to turn a wheelchair with rider around on the platform of the existing ramp and it was fairly steep, but had served the purpose. But now the over 17 meter (56 ft) long, wider ramp running alongside the west wall, with bigger turn-around area, with an over seven meter (24 ft) extension out to the sidewalk running parallel to the front steps will be easier to use and might even accommodate the small scooters that some people use. The cost of the new ramp, made totally of treated lumber, was around $5,500, a little more
than first anticipated by the board. Bruce Anderson of Frontier Steam was hired to do the construction and was assisted by volunteers Arnold Kubista and Phil Walton. The ramp was completed in plenty of time for the Bentley Christmas Craft & Gift Sale booked for the hall on November 1 making for easier access by more people to the event. Plans are to paint/stain the structure in the spring after the lumber has fully cured. On the current hall board are president Phil Walton, vice president Colleen McNaught, secretary/ treasurer Mona Kubista, casino chair Vera Boettger and director Arnold Kubista. More board members are always appreciated, and needed, to help maintain the historic hall, and to help decide what renovation project should be next. If you have ideas and can volunteer a few hours please contact one of the executive and help preserve a big part of Bentley’s history.
