Homeless housing site OK’d Despite opposition from neighbours, rezoning receives third reading Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
Despite opposition from neighbours, a rezoning proposal to allow housing for the homeless on Gladys Avenue was given third reading by council on Monday. The proposal to amend the official community plan (OCP) for the city-owned site to allow for low-barrier supportive housing – which allows residents to enter without being drug- and alcohol-free, and provides support services – was discussed for about two hours at the public hearing. A majority of the speakers were in opposition to the plans for the site – located on the west side of Gladys Avenue, just north of George Ferguson Way.
Neighbours raised concerns about the potential for property crime, which many said is already common in the area; the proximity to two schools and a residential neighbourhood; impact on property values and more. Peter de Jong, a neighbour who had started a petition against the project, said residents were there out of frustration. He said council has a mandate to keep people safe and that while he applauded efforts to help the homeless, he didn’t think the project would be successful. “I would ask council to look for an alternative site.” Staff, trustees and parents of students at Dogwood School spoke of the impact of the issue of homelessness on school grounds, such as finding remnants of waste left behind on school property.
Area resident Marcelo Dudka said people come into the neighbourhood from the homeless camp on Gladys Avenue near Essendene Avenue. He said there are incidents of property crime. “It’s gotten way worse ever since that tent city went up.” He worries about his kids and said he can’t leave them outside to play by themselves. He maintained the project should go in an industrial area where there are no children. While there is no project currently slated for the site, the pre-emptive rezoning is being done with the hopes of securing provincial funding. The city had previously considered a low-barrier supportive housing project – with roughly $17 million in attached funding from the province – at 2408 Montvue Ave. across from

Temporary cabins for homeless postponed Group withdrew application for now, but plans to resubmit A transitional homeless village proposal on Valley Road has been put on hold by the organizers of the project – but they say it doesn’t mean the end of the plan. Jeff Gruban, a member of the Abbotsford Dignitarian Society, said the group has for the time being removed its application for a city permit to build the “Abby Digs” project. The group had pitched a concept that would allow for up to 40 sleeping cabins; a communal laundry, kitchen and bathroom structure; and a caretaker/administrative building on a piece of private land at 33725 Valley Rd. There were two requests before the city for temporary-use permits on the property – one for the village and another for a temporary composting and recycling facility.
An artist’s rendering of the Abby Digs project.
As one proposal is residential and the other industrial, a city report said the projects must be considered together to determine whether they are compatible. But Gruban said the dual proposals added to the complexity of the approval
process for both applications. He said that as the village plan is more complex, they decided to withdraw their application. Once there is a decision on the temporary recycling facility, then the group will resubmit their proposal for consideration. “We are moving ahead, 100 per cent.” He said even if something happens with the Valley Road location, they “are still committed to building the village and we will find another location if that’s something that we have to do.” Gruban said they appreciate the city’s help so far, but they are disappointed they were not able to get the village up and running by winter. It appears spring is now the earliest they could proceed.

Train traffic may continue through December Average of two empty coal trains per day moving through city Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Empty coal trains will continue to run through downtown Abbotsford for at least another month, as construction on a Washington rail corridor continues. An average of two trains a day have been running throughout the summer and were expected to stop in the middle of October. The trains are operated by BNSF, and have been running from the Roberts Bank unloading terminal to Abbotsford, where they turn south, travel through the city’s downtown and cross the border into Sumas. The trains run through Abbotsford on tracks operated by the Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY). SRY spokesperson Singh Biln said the rerouting is necessary as BNSF continues to upgrade tracks and replace bridges between the border and Burlington, Wash. While the new extended contract is set to end Nov. 30, BNSF spokesperson Gus
Melonas said the rerouting may extend into December. “That’s under evaluation and discussion,” he said. Biln said SRY was open to take “as much as we can get,” and that future rail traffic will depend on whether BNSF can come to an agreement with CPR to use that company’s more-heavily used rail line through Langley. “The track is in very good shape right now for what we’re doing, running empties,” he said. But he said more work might be needed in the event of a long-term deal. That work, though, probably wouldn’t extend to train crossings in the city’s downtown core.
“The seven or eight minutes it would take for the trains to go across [downtown], I think that would still be there.” The trains are limited to a maximum of 24 km/h through downtown Abbotsford, and double that in rural areas. BNSF has been hauling an increasing volume of coal from U.S. mines to Roberts Bank. It is also involved in a controversial plan to build a coal transloading facility at Fraser Surrey Docks. The plan, which would bring one additional coal train per day to BNSF tracks, has prompted opposition from area residents and groups fighting climate change. The BNSF route through
Abbotsford and Sumas is also occasionally suggested as an alternative to tracks along the waterfront at White Rock and Ocean Park in South Surrey, where mayors have called for the removal of tracks. A separate proposal to build a coal terminal near Bellingham has also elicited concerns about increased train traffic from Washington residents and citizen groups. Asked whether Abbotsford would see more trains if a Bellingham terminal is built, BNSF spokesperson Courtney Wallace wrote in an email: “Currently, there are no plans to route traffic along our Sumas Line into the Lower Mainland.” She added: “We regularly evaluate our traffic flows and routes for all the freight we carry to ensure we are meeting customer demand. Our multiple routes in Washington give us flexibility to meet traffic demand and we invest accordingly not only in this part of the state, but across our network.”
‘It’s gotten way worse since that tent city went up’ From A1
Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) headquarters. That project was defeated on a tie council vote in February. Despite many community supporters of that project, some neighbouring residents opposed the site, and the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) objected to its location in the C7 zone, a special downtown city area that prohibits supportive recovery use.
Rod Santiago, executive director of ACS, said that council has a very difficult decision to make but it is important to have housing first, providing an opportunity for homeless people to be off the streets and supported, followed by an individualized recovery plan. Following a public hearing, council has the option to defer its decision to a following meeting in order to consider the views of the public. Coun. Dave Loewen said that while he didn’t want to appear to take the con-
cerns of the public lightly, “the time is now to move ahead.” He added that he is confident it will be a successful project. Coun. Henry Braun said he would vote in favour of the project, but was concerned it was rushed. Mayor Bruce Banman said he doesn’t think there would be an ideal place for supportive housing, but said “this one is far more embraced by the community than the last one.” Council voted unanimously to pass third reading.

Mayoral candidates Bruce Banman (left) and Henry Braun (right) faced off at a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored public debate on Thursday. TYLER OLSEN Abbotsford News
Mayoral candidates clash in second debate DO YOU NEED Banman said. Braun countered by saying he and Banman rarely had one-on-one meetings in their three years together and that the mayor had either cancelled or didn’t show up to the last three planned meetings. He also said council
meetings were unpredictable and disjointed because councillors rarely discuss their positions before an issue comes before them. “I’m all for what I heard. The reality is quite different,” Braun said. Banman returned with the strongest words of the evening. He said his opponent regularly casts lone opposing votes against measures before council, and was “probably the most polarizing person on council” and “has not been a team player.” The candidates also clashed over public safety.
Banman noted that crime had decreased over the previous three years. Braun, though, said the crime rate had actually jumped by more than 10 per cent in 2014. Braun said the city should look at increasing resources for policing, while Banman expressed confidence that the police department would be able to catch the small number of criminals he said are often responsible for spikes in crime. Both cited their confidence in the city’s police chief. Chamber of Commerce president Mike Welte, who moderated the event, spoke of the need to reduce the ratio that sees businesses taxed at a rate more than twice that of residents. He asked the two mayoral candidates if they would be in favour of such a measure. Braun said he would like to see the ratio reduced to around two-to-one, although he said taxing businesses and residents at the same rate wasn’t warranted, because businesses generate profit. Banman said Abbotsford’s tax rate
is already competitive, and that taxation only becomes an issue when the economy is lagging. But he added that the city does need to work to reduce taxes on businesses. Asked about transparency on council, Banman cited the city’s newly signed deal with Global Spectrum, which he said would become a public document. Braun, meanwhile, took aim at Banman’s vote earlier this year against rezoning a downtown property for Abbotsford Community Services’ supportive housing project. The project was denied in a tied vote. He said a lack of communication caused the proponents to spend “an incredible amount of money” because they thought council was in favour of the project. “If I’m the mayor, I will ask council to release the minutes of what happened in-camera,” he said. He also said council spends too much time behind closed doors. Banman countered by saying, “We are far more transparent now than we’ve ever been.”

The two men vying for Abbotsford’s mayor’s chair clashed over their respective records while in office during a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored mayoral debate Thursday evening at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. At their second public debate, Mayor Bruce Banman and Coun. Henry Braun directly challenged each other in ways not seen at a meeting one week prior. While the two candidates were asked what they would do in the future regarding tax policies, public safety funding, and business issues, the past three years proved more contentious, with both criticizing each other’s single term in office. Banman repeatedly called himself “projobs,” and highlighted Braun’s vote against advancing a proposed industrial project in the Bradner area to the Agriculture Land Commission. Banman also said his vote against a supportive housing project in the downtown core showed he listened to the business community. “I’ve proven I listen
to business, whereas Mr. Braun turns a deaf ear,” he said. In response, Braun said: “I’ll give you my 40-year track record in business and show me anywhere in that where I’m anti-business.” He said he voted against the industrial project because staff could not say how much it may cost the city. “If we get it wrong, guess who pays,” he said. Braun said the city is failing to attract new jobs, and laid the responsibility at Banman’s feet. He also challenged Banman over his leadership of the city. In regards to a question about transportation policy, Braun and later Banman said the widening of Fraser Highway needs to be a priority. In his rebuttal, Braun said the widening “may be a priority for Mr. Banman, but council does not know about this.” Later, Banman spoke about the need for council to find common ground in order to get things done. “We’ve been so polarized that we’ve forgot how to compromise to move toward a common goal,”

Agri-Centre debated at public hearing Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
A proposal to consolidate agricultural equipment dealers in a 33acre parcel at Atkinson and Eldridge roads near Sumas Mountain in east Abbotsford elicited both concerns and support at city hall on Monday. At a public hearing, neighbouring residents spoke about the potential impact on traffic, the project’s location outside the city’s urban development boundary, lack of city services to the area, and the need to respect sites significant to the Sto:lo First Nation. The site is zoned residential and not in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). While city staff have recommended against the project, proponent Corpus Management Group (CMG) has said it has been endorsed
by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, the Fraser-Valley IndoCanadian Business Association and the University of the Fraser Valley, as well as agribusinesses. Brad Vis, who spoke on behalf of CMG, said the project is a “one-ofa-kind development. He said there will be no significant impact on traffic, the site will be sufficiently serviced, and the initiative wouldn’t proceed without the consent of the Se:math (Sumas) First Nation. He said it will be important to the agricultural community, and support local businesses and farmers. A video shown at the public hearing contained messages of support from local farmers. After the public hearing, council deferred their decision to an upcoming meeting.

Widening Highway 1 and Fraser Highway are among the city’s transportation priorities put forward to the province for consideration in its 10-year plan. The province announced in October that it is developing a 10-year plan to identify short, medium and longer-term projects. Abbotsford will submit its proposal, outlining the first priority as widening Highway 1 to six lanes between 264th Street and Whatcom Road, stretching about the length of Abbotsford. That is followed by improvements to Mt. Lehman Road between Highway 1 and the Abbotsford International Airport boundary and a railway overpass at an urban ar-
terial road with a location to be determined. The fourth priority is the widening of Fraser Highway to five lanes between Station Road and Mt. Lehman Road. A city staff report said the priorities were drawn from the transportation master plan, the Fraser Valley Regional District’s draft list of regional transportation priorities, and feedback from the airport and residents, including the recent petition for upgrades to Fraser Highway. Ministry of transportation officials are consulting First Nations, local government, transportation authorities and other community leaders across to the province, which will be considered in the development of the provincial 10-year transportation plan.

First step finally taken
A supportive housing project on Gladys Avenue for the homeless got the green light from council on Monday. Considering the distressing track record of this city on the issue of homelessness over the past several years, the approval wasn’t surprising. Turning down another viable opportunity that offers long-term solutions would have been acutely politically unwise. Earlier this year, this same council, in a tie vote, managed to scuttle a similar project, proposed by Abbotsford Community Services, accompanied by about $17 million in provincial funding. That proposal died largely because of opposition from the downtown business association, ostensibly focused on what would be a reversal of old C7 zoning, which prevents such services in the downtown area. That’s really the only key difference in this latest concept, which is located just a few blocks from the ACS site (other than the fact that it’s on city land, and an actual housing project with funding hasn’t been
put forward yet). Otherwise, most of the same issues exist, such as a concentration of the homeless in the downtown area, proximity to bars and liquor stores, potential of increased crime, open drug use, visitor perceptions, etc. Short of herding the homeless off to some remote site, like a temporary “dignity village” plan near the waste transfer station on Valley Road, the same concerns are going to be raised by neighbours of such a facility in any setting that is near businesses, residences and schools. The reality remains though, that people on the street need first to get off it, with few barriers to doing so. Then their specific issues can be addressed. Ultimately, the hope and goal over the long-term, is that a supportive housing facility significantly reduces the number of homeless by assisting them to become sober, functional and self-supporting. That’s the best-case scenario in terms of “out of sight, out of mind.” The first step in that direction has finally been taken.
Time for proponent to act in a kinder way Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand It seems to me that Kinder Morgan should consider hiring a new public relations firm, because right now its image in relation to the twinning and expansion of its pipeline through B.C. is less than stellar. Cutting trees in a Burnaby park was not the way to engender support or convert opponents, nor is its refusal to answer many questions posed during the current National Energy Board hearings. The proposed pipeline expansion, routed mostly on KM’s existing right-of-way, will go through countless neighbourhoods on the Lower Mainland. People want to be assured their backyards will look tomorrow the way they do today. They want to know that the possibility of leaks and spills is miniscule. Of course, there are also the protestors
and opponents who believe shipping more oil is criminal, and that the world should be concentrating on the development of alternative energy sources. Geothermal would be nice. Wind and water currents also have great potential. The problem at the moment is that our society and our economy, currently and for the foreseeable future, is based on the use of oil-based products. Oil and its derivatives power our vehicles, keep aviation aloft, create the fertilizers that grow our food, provide materials for clothing and the essential ingredient in most of the products we all use on a daily basis. The world, or a least the people who populate it, keeps expanding and with that comes the demand for more oil. If the Chevron refinery in Burnaby, or the big one at Cherry Point stopped producing, the Lower Mainland would quickly grind to a halt. Kinder Morgan’s plan however, is not to increase flow to either of these facilities, but to export the Alberta bitumen via tanker to distant refineries. And those export plans are what seem to be driving the belief of Kinder Morgan
that what it wants to do is in the best interest of Canada, and therefore will be approved regardless of what it does, or doesn’t do, to quell people’s concerns. In other words, the federal government wants to sell Canada’s oil and Kinder Morgan is going to make it happen regardless of the objections, real or imagined.
...our society and our economy, currently and for the foreseeable future is based on the use of oil-based products. Not the way to get a project accomplished because, like most everything else that occurs, it should be done in a good-neighbourly way. And that is why KM needs to look inwardly, change its tactics and listen and respond to the concerns people are voicing. That is respectful, and needs to be shown to those who want their
voices heard. The reality, and I am certain the eventuality, is that the dil-bit will flow. Unlike the Enbridge proposal in Northern B.C., Kinder Morgan’s new line will be on a right-of-way that already exists, through pumping and delivery systems that are already in place. For the most part, when the project is completed few will remember it’s even there, except of course those who are monitoring the increased tanker traffic through Vancouver’s harbour. Thus, if Kinder Morgan is so sure that its project will be approved by the National Energy Board and the federal government, why not be nice about it? Why not make every effort to ameliorate concerns? Taking a highhanded approach only alienates people, results in lengthy and costly delays and, I believe in this case, merely prolongs the inevitable. Time for the company to adopt a policy of being both ‘nice’ and forthright. We, supporters and objectors alike, deserve that.

Let the insanity continue. Now the City of Abbotsford’s mayor and councillors are recommending the hiring of a homeless coordinator. This new coordinator would be required to make decisions on the vagrants that our mayor and councillors are too inept to make. This new position would only cost $92,000 to $124,000 in wages. It would also require an office in city hall, office staff and a vehicle paid for by Abbotsford residents. With the upcoming civil election in November, let’s put this vagrant issue to referendum. Simple question: Do the residents of Abbotsford want the vagrants to remain? Check “yes” or “no.” If Abbotsford residents vote “no”, the new mayor and councillors must instruct the Abbotsford Police to take the required steps to remove these vagrants. I’m sure the police will be happy to have their shackles removed. Should Abbotsford residents vote “yes” to keep the vagrants, we now know where to locate the new Dignity Village. It’s so much easier to sit back, be quiet and think, “there’s nothing I can do, so why bother?” Council and city hall have had this attitude for years. A Dignity Village anywhere in our city does not solve any vagrant problems – it just relocates these problems. There needs to be a resolution to this vagrant terrorist situation. The mayor and councillors need to make the tough decisions Abbotsford residents elected them to make. C. Howard Abbotsford

These people included Mayor Bruce Banman, Ingrid Epp of The Reach Gallery Museum, Allan Asaph of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, Deb Lowell of the Salvation Army, Tammi Lusk of the Abbotsford News and others. The group has taken the finished ornaments back to their workplaces, where they will gather auction bids on the items. Pilot error was to blame in a 2011 plane crash in Alberta that killed two brothers, including Abbotsford resident Dean Sorken, according to a public inquiry report. Dean and Lee Sorken died on June 3, 2011, when the 1966 singleengine Mooney airplane they were flying crashed near Bashaw, Alta., a small town just east of Red Deer. An inquiry into the crash was held this summer, and the final report was released last week. The plane was
vertically,” the report states. The inquiry heard that Dean Sorken had around 500 hours of flying time, which witness Gordon Welsby deemed as “low experience.” Welsby, an experienced pilot and flight instructor, deemed the decision to fly a poor choice that “should not have been undertaken.” He said the pilot appeared to quickly lose control of the aircraft and was unable to rectify the situation. The judge who heard the inquiry, said Sorken’s “ultimate reason and decision for attempting this flight will never be known, although the need or want to get home for the family wedding undoubtedly played a major role.” He said he could make no recommendations that would

Dean had picked Lee up in Vernon, where he was told that a flight to Killam was “unlikely” because of cloud cover. Dean’s licence only allowed him to fly during daylight, when he could see the ground and horizon. Nevertheless, the brothers left Vernon that afternoon. The plane made it to central Alberta without difficulty, but as it began to descend, something went wrong. The plane was later found in a crater, with both occupants deceased. “The plane had impacted the ground

The provincial government has named Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association (ARJAA) as one of this year’s winners of a Ministry of Justice Community Safety and Crime Prevention Award. An Abbotsford senior, Helen (Jean) Grant, was also recognized for her efforts to assist seniors who have been victimized by crime. With a small core group of staff supported by over 70 volunteers and with more than 1,100 cases since 2003, the ARJAA is dedicated to finding innovative ways to impart and engage in restorative values, practices and interventions. Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas applauded the organization for its work. “They do a tremendous service to Abbotsford by making offenders accountable to their victims and helping them make amends for harm done,” he said. Grant, 88, has been involved in crime prevention and community safety since 1992, when she joined forces with the former Matsqui Police to form Seniors Help and Awareness, a volunteer support and outreach group for seniors in the community who have been victimized. The awards, now in their 17th year, are bestowed on people and organizations in B.C. for their exemplary leadership in community safety and crime prevention and courage to stand up to crime. They are jointly hosted by the BC Crime Prevention Association and the provincial Ministry of Justice and lead into B.C.’s Crime Prevention Week, Nov. 1-7.

GET GEARED UP! One of the major fundraisers that keeps volunteer safety personnel operating on local mountains occurs Nov. 15-16 in Abbotsford. The annual Canadian Ski Patrol's (CSP) Winter Extreme Ski Show and Swap sees about 10,000 pieces of ski and snowboard equipment valued at approximately $1 million on consignment at the Ag-Rec building, selling for significant savings over new, said Denis Dion, swap manager. "You can completely outfit yourself or your family members for under $100," he said. Everything from boots to boards will be on hand, and each piece is safety inspected. Any helmets for sale are brand new. "We have extreme selection and extreme pricing." Nearly 95 per cent of the equipment is still new – just last year's models. From its humble beginnings in a church basement, the swap grew and needed more space. They went from the basement to an auditorium, then Tradex and now the Ag-Rec building. Between the Abbotsford event, and a similar one in Vancouver, these fundraisers generate enough money – about $100,000 – to keep CSP volunteers on the slopes in locales such as Hemlock, Manning and Seymour, where they are often the first responders to anyone who has a mishap while skiing inbounds. motto all year, as they’ve pushed to be stronger, faster, and grittier than their opponents. It’s been the theme in interview after interview, practice after practice, echoed from the mouths of players and coaches alike. This weekend the Cascades showed they have what it takes, guaranteeing themselves a berth in next weekend’s CIS National Championships in Laval, Quebec, where they will compete as one of the last eight teams standing. UFV won the opportunity by finishing with a silver medal at the Canada West Final Four tournament over the weekend. The Cascades knocked off the Prairie Division champions, the Alberta Pandas, 1-0, before falling 2-1 to the host TWU Spartans in the final. The squad attended the national championship for the first time in 2010 in coach Rob Giesbrecht’s inaugural year, a trip that culminated with the first CIS medal won by any UFV team (a bronze). Not a single player on the Cascades’ current roster was part of that legendary squad, indeed the current roster doesn’t include a single fifth-year player. Friday, on a foggy Halloween night at TWU’s Rogers Field, UFV managed the only Continued on A19

goal of the match in the 71st minute. Kayla Klim finished with three saves for the shutout, her second in two games after a 3-0 quarter-final demolishing of the Victoria Vikes on Oct. 25. On Saturday, goals by TWU’s Jennifer Castillo, in the 24th minute, and Jessica King, in the 61st, staked the Spartans to a 2-0 lead. The Cascades refused to quit, and cut the deficit in half on another of Beck’s strikes in the 72nd minute. Klim turned in a spectacular 10-save performance and was named the Cascades’ player of the game. “I personally believe she’s the best goalie in the league, hands-down,” said central defender Dayle Jeras, who plays directly in front of Klim. It’s a belief that was echoed by Giesbrecht. Courtesy of her two-
goal weekend, Shelby Beck regains her position as UFV’s scoring leader. “She’s a kid that was on the fringes of the team her first two years,” said Giesbrecht, who is very proud of Beck’s progression as a player. “She scored twice against TWU a couple weeks ago, she scored the winning goal against Alberta, she scored the goal [in Saturday’s final].” While the team left for Quebec on Monday, they don’t play their first game until Thursday at 4 p.m EST against the Memorial University Sea-Hawks (Newfoundland and Labrador). “A lot of teams, especially eastern teams, won’t really know what we can do, because again we came in as tenth ranked,” said Jeras. “They’re going to underestimate us like everyone else does and they’re not going to know what hit them.”

Local JVs finish strong The W.J. Mouat Hawks’ junior football team finished off their regular season with a 41-32 victory over the Abby Senior Panthers on Thursday. Missing some of their key players, Abby played a gritty game, and took a 24-21 lead going into halftime. The Hawks finished their league play with a 6-1 record, and will now enjoy a bye week before they start their run in the AAA playoffs with a Nov. 6 home game
against Handsworth (5:30 p.m.). The Robert Bateman junior varsity Timberwolves strung together two solid performances over the last two weeks, losing to the undefeated New West Hyacks 21-20 on Oct. 23, before defeating crosstown rivals, the Rick Hansen Hurricanes, 27-24 on Oct. 29. The Timberwolves will play their final regular season game against Lord Tweedsmuir on Thursday, Nov. 6 in Cloverdale.

CBC loses by two A pair of local products tore up the floor in the Columbia Bearcats men’s basketball home opener against the Kwantlen University Eagles on Friday night. Sasha Otanga (Yale Lions) and Jamie Konrad (Abby Panthers) joined five other new faces including international recruits Elijah Calhoun (Brooklyn, NY) and Si Woo Youn (S. Korea) for the new look of the 2014 Bearcats. CBC threatened early as they jumped ahead 11-3 in the first quarter and 37-27 at halftime. However, the third quarter belonged to the Eagles who outscored the Bearcats 31-20. The final quarter was a back and forth affair with the Eagles pulling out an eventual 84-82 victory. Second-year Bearcat coach Matt Guynup commented that his team “struggled to stay disciplined and focused for the full game. We led for most of the game and let it slip away from us in the end.”
