News Girls and sibling groups begin for those diagnosed with ASD Sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Sometimes families can be thrown an unexpected curveball. Recognizing that an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a
lifelong challenge that impacts the entire family unit, a local organization is offering support to those who at times can be left on the sidelines – brothers and sisters of children with an ASD diagnosis.

“Sib shops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs creates a lifelong bond that is unique,” explained Sara Maloff and Carolynn Wood, OCAI behaviour interventionists. ”We will help with feelings, like guilt, because siblings are usually in the role the longest,” Maloff added. “They also need support throughout their lives.” ASD is a complex condition that affects normal brain development and impacts a person’s social relationships, communication, interests and behaviour. Effects can be invisible, but are wide ranging, and can include speech impairments, inability to make eye contact, and disinterest in sharing enjoyment with others. Growth has been demonstrated through early behaviour intervention. But with such an intricate series of ASD symptomatology,
creating peer support and increasing parental and caregiver awareness of sibling-related concerns is integral to healthy and happy family development. Maloff and Wood recently attended the Southwest Conference on Disability in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and are ready to share interactive activities they learned at the annual gathering’s Sibling Support Project. “Sib shops are a spirited mix of new games that are designed to be unique, off beat and appealing to a wide ability range,” said Maloff. “And we’ll talk about the good and not so good. It’s a safe way for discussion about whatever experiences they’ve had, and provide an opportunity to meet others who also have siblings with difference.” Another first time OCAI offering slated to begin Nov. 21 is the ‘Girlz Group,’ which are two-hour sessions designed to support
young ladies from ages 6 to 19 in the areas of cognitive, social, emotional, life and community skills. There are certain challenges unique to girls, says Maloff. “The goal is to support young girls with special needs to build a healthy self-esteem, foster friendships, and create a safe space for girls with differences, to learn.” The Sib Shops and Girlz Group involve gross motor games, or play with a lot of movement, so the organization is still scouting for an appropriate venue because the OCAI Farwell Street office is tight on square footage. “I’ve put out feelers to a couple of different places,” said Maloff. “But if anyone wants to donate a building to us, we will take it,” she chuckled. Autism spectrum disorders typically manifest before three years of age and are associated with impaired verbal and non-verbal
communication, social interaction and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour. Though an ASD diagnosis impacts quality of life and the condition isn’t ‘curable,’ there is hope and help through early intervention and the development of an individualized behaviour support plan. “There’s a lot of research supporting growth – that growth happens when we implement early intensive behaviour intervention,” said Rebecca Oliver, OCAI’s Trail-based behaviour consultant. “Early intervention is successful in the fact that there’s individual growth for each and every child that we work with.” For information in Trail, Castlegar, Rossland, and Fruitvale, contact Oliver at 250.608.8828 or by email at rebecca@ocai. ca. How Grande Prairie became Grand Forks
2014 SLED CLEARANCE
GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Seventy-fifth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Although Grand Forks’ name isn’t mysterious or unusual, its origin is convoluted enough that we’ll devote two installments to it. Many sources state Grand Forks was originally called Grand Prairie or Grande Prairie, which is true, but Grande Prairie actually referred to the entire valley; Grand Forks was a townsite within Grande Prairie. For a while, both names were used simultaneously. In a 1930 interview published in the Boundary Historical Society’s 10th report, Sydney Russell Almond (namesake of the Almond Gardens neighbourhood) stated: “The name [Grand Forks] was used by the few people living just in the vicinity, but we old settlers always used Grande Prairie for the entire district, the forks included. Grande Prairie was what the district was known as long before there was any Grand Forks and that name was never heard generally until after the town started.” Grande Prairie was named in early October 1859 when the British Boundary Commission and its American counterpart surveyed the 49th parallel between BC and Washington. A party of Royal Engineers camped near present-day Grand Forks, and their officer in charge, Lt. Henry C. Palmer, sketched the area showing a possible military road through the valley. He wrote: “At the confluence of the three valleys occurs a large plain, three miles by two, designated in the plan La Grande Prairie.”

Recently-installed signs on the outskirts of Grand Forks bear the city’s new logo. Greg Nesteroff photo
It was so labelled on a map they produced in March 1862. In the Manitoba Free Press of March 21, 1890, John Douglas of the Douglas Mining company of Rock Creek explained: “Cascade City is on the eastern limit of Grand Prairie.” The earliest mention of Grand Forks is in a diary entry by Robert (Seattle) Clark dated April 5, 1894, and quoted in the Boundary Historical Society’s 15th report. An earlier, undated entry from that year said “Starting a townsite at North Fork bridge. Wiseman starting to put up a hotel.” Clark’s daughter Ella is sometimes credited with choosing the name Grand Forks. Others say it was the Manly family. The first newspaper mention is in the debut issue of the Fairview Advance, dated April 26, 1894: “The new townsite at the junction of the North Fork of the Kettle River with the main stream is to be called Grand Forks.” The same issue added: “The Grand Prairie valley, in which there are over 90 settlers, has no store of any
kind, though one is now being built at the new townsite.” Angus K. Stuart of the Advance wrote to Member of Parliament J.A. Mara on September 3 that a post office was needed at “Grand Forks in Grand Prairie.” But the new name took a while to catch on, for the Advance of December 5 (which by that time had moved to Midway) still carried ads for the “Grand Prairie Hotel, Grand Prairie, Kettle River, BC.” and the “Grand Forks Hotel, Kettle River, BC.” The Grand Forks post office opened January 1, 1895 and the city was incorporated April 15, 1897. Gradually, the name Grande Prairie died out — no doubt partly due to confusion over another Grande Prairie southeast of Kamloops, and yet another in what is now Alberta. (It didn’t seem to matter that there was a much larger Grand Forks in North Dakota.) But the naming of Grand Forks was not yet settled. Next: Piedmont, Miner, or Ystradyfodwg?
Correction A story last week (Participation by women down in local elections) incorrectly reported the number of women running for local office in both the story and an accompanying chart. The actual number is 85, which is 37 per cent of the total.

Forest industry giant reaches out to students CASTLEGAR – Selkirk College forest technology program alumna Jean Christie returned to her roots on the Castlegar campus earlier this month in hopes of finding eager recruits to join her on the industry frontlines with West Fraser Timber. Christie is a rising star within her company and the industry. Graduating from Selkirk College in 2010, Christie first went to work for West Fraser as a summer student at the forestry giant’s Quesnel operation. Last year, Christie was included in the “Top 20 Under 40” article in Wood Business Magazine as one of the young forestry leaders in Canada. In early October, Christie took a break from duties as silviculture coordinator to join a West Fraser recruiting trip aimed at reaching out to post-secondary schools across Western Canada. “The reputation of Selkirk College is very good, it has a super solid forestry program,” she said after the presentation. “We are looking for people who have completed their two-year diploma program, and with training provided by us, are ready to go into these positions.” West Fraser visits colleges and universities annually, focussing on programs at BCIT, the University of Alberta, College of New Caledonia (Prince George) and UNBC (Prince George). This month’s visit to Selkirk College was West Fraser’s first dip into the West Kootenay and was set up at the urging of Christie. “It’s a little out of the way to come to Selkirk, but the incentive is there this
year to expand our pool and bring in the strong students that Selkirk has as potential candidates,” said Christie. The Right Start at Selkirk College Christie was born-and-raised in Prince Edward Island where both of her parents worked in the forest industry and continue to operate a privately owned woodlot. With a love for the outdoors, Christie came out west when she was 20 to explore all the Kootenays had to offer. Though she did not intend to follow in the footsteps of her parents, after three winters of working in the oil and gas industry Christie decided to change it up and enrolled at Selkirk College. “The time I spent at Selkirk was wonderful,” she said. “While I was there I knew I was learning a lot, but it wasn’t really until I started working in forestry that I truly realized the strength of the program that Selkirk has.” Christie was an outstanding student, winning the prestigious Canadian Institute of Forestry Gold Medal award in her final year. Christie credits her instructors for the passion they instilled over her two years on the Castlegar Campus. “The silviculture programs at Selkirk were extremely complete and I think that had to do with the instructor I had,” she said. “Carol Andrews is such an engaged, passionate, intelligent and wonderful instructor... she really had a big influence on me.” Looking for the Next Wave The forest industry has a history of peaks and valleys. After weathering some recent low points, the industry is currently experiencing a strong come-

back. With the surge comes a need for qualified people to fill the spots. “There is a real desperate need for forest techs right now,” said Andrews, who has also fielded calls from other forest companies interested in stopping by Selkirk to speak with students. “Companies are being very proactive in recruiting at this point.” In her presentation, Christie explained that West Fraser is a company with a robust summer internship program and likes to promote from within its ranks. One of the largest lumber producers in the world, the publicly-traded company has operations across North America.

The students who took in the presentation were impressed with what they heard. “You have to look long term and they did a good job of getting us to think about long term prospects,” said second year forest technology student Adam Flintoft. “Things like benefits and the way they look after employees goes a long way.”
Having worked with some forestry veterans this summer, this is a great time to be starting in this industry,
Though he still has a few months of study left, Flintoft is looking forward to what will come after graduation this spring. “Having worked with some forestry veterans this summer, this is a great time to be starting in this industry,” he said. “People have seen ups and downs, people have been forced to leave and are coming back now. It’s a good time to be thinking about this kind of career.” West Fraser followed up by holding interviews for summer positions on-site at Selkirk College. Facilitated by the college’s co-op education and employment services, the interviews help students plan for what comes next. “We’re not just educating the students.... this is their future,” said administrative assistant Olga Sherstobitoff. “When they walk out the door we want them to have opportunities and hope for the future, which we want to set in motion before they leave here.” Learn more about the Selkirk College forest technology program: selkirk.ca/ program/forest-technology

Tahoe is up to the big towing tasks By Zack Spencer
The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is part of a full suite of large trucks from General Motors. These range from the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Denali and the Cadillac Escalade. Something of interest is the preference Canadians have for the GMC brand over the Chevrolet trucks, which are the most popular in the United States. More Canadians go for GMC and the US loves Chevrolet, the complete reverse. Regardless, all of these GM trucks represent the majority of full-size truck sales in Canada. GM kind of has a lock on big vehicles able to move a large family, tow a trailer and now do it with much greater efficiency. These are all based on the award winning full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks that arrived in 2014. GM has taken much of what made those some of the most comfortable vehicles to drive and baked it into the Tahoe and others. Looks
‘‘

Zack Spencer
In the Chevrolet family the Tahoe is the short wheelbase version and the Suburban is the longer wheelbase model, with much more cargo space behind the third row of seats. Some might find the new design direction from GM to be a bit too slab-sided, with squarer edges and boxy shapes but I prefer the modern take on the classic design. The Tahoe sits very high off the ground so the power side step is a wonderful addition along with a power tailgate and backup camera. How did we ever live without these amenities before?
The biggest change is the front lighting package GM has used on this Chevrolet. LED daytime running lights make a statement and the monster grille with the big Chevrolet bowtie looks rough and ready. Inside One of the biggest changes in the full-size pickup trucks is the level of refinement and ride quality and this has migrated into this Tahoe, the cabin is quiet and refined. This is done through a number of advancements; one of the biggest is the way the doors wrap into the roof to help shut out road and wind noise. The next big advantage is the attention to detail in the front cabin. There is a big screen, front and centre, with easy to use and access rotary dials and switches. There are USB plugs along with regular power outlets just under the radio and more USB plugs inside the glove box and yet another behind the radio screen that slides up and away to reveal a hidden compartment. The back seats have an available flip and fold feature that au-
tomatically lowers or raises the second and third row of seats. What is surprising is the lack of cargo space behind the third row when it is in use, the bigger Suburban might be the way to go for really large families. Drive The two-wheel drive Tahoe is the value leader in the GM line of full-size trucks, starting at $51,900-- the GMC comes with a $2000 premium over the Chevy. Yes, this is an expensive vehicle but keep in mind that towing is a big reason why people purchase such big trucks. With a towing capacity of 3856kg (8500 lbs.) in two-wheel drive trim and 3765 (8300 lbs.) with four wheel drive, the Tahoe is up to the task of towing most pleasure boats and family campers with ease. The Tahoe uses the same 355hp 5.3L V8 engine found in the full-size pickup trucks. It uses direct injection technology and has the ability to switch off half of the cylinders to help save fuel. There is a small indicator light on the instrument cluster that
tells the driver when the engine is running on just 4-cylinders. This helps the driver feather the throttle to keep the engine in this fuel saving mode as long as possible. When more power is needed, the engine automatically reverts to all eight cylinders for maximum power. These tricks help improve city fuel economy by seven percent and highway consumption by ten percent. Verdict The Tahoe tested was the top LTZ trim with the magnetic ride control, the same
system used in the Corvette Stingray. This system monitors the road condition up to 1000 times per second and adjusts the shock absorbers up to 100 times per second to improve ride and handling. This along with the smooth engine and quiet ride makes the Tahoe feel like a big, luxury sedan. It is no wonder that people who have these big trucks love them. One thing to consider when choosing which truck to buy is the available engine. The GMC Denali and Cadillac Escalade trucks
have a larger 6.2L V8, which is much quicker and more capable. This Tahoe is just part of the full-line of trucks from GM that dominate the market, and for good reason. These are well-designed, well-made and supremely comfortable vehicles for a large family. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca The Lowdown Power: 5.3L V8 with 355hp Fill-up: 14.9L/10.1L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $51,900$71,150

Staying safe means stowing your cell By Lauren Kramer
My kids have my permission to yell at their dad whenever they spot him using his cell phone while driving. Which, unfortunately, is often. I’ve coached them on what to say: “You’re putting my safety at risk,” “You’re breaking the law,” and “Dad, put your phone away this minute!” I’m not alone when I say my biggest fear is that someone I love will be in a horrific, life-changing, potentially fatal car accident. And every time a driver picks up their
phone while operating a car, that accident becomes increasingly likely. We’re all doing it, but we know we shouldn’t. Sneaking peeks at our cell phones while we’re driving has become an irresistible temptation as more and more of us become addicted to checking email, responding to texts and answering calls whenever they come in – and no matter what is going on around us. It’s easy to rationalize. “This will just take a second,” we think, exaggerating the amount of time it takes
to, say, respond to a text message. According to the Canadian Automobile Association the average distraction time for this task is 22.6 seconds, the distance of 373 metres of travel at 40 km/h and the equivalent of four intersections or 68 parked cars. But it’s not just the texting time that’s so perilous, it’s the time it will take you to regain your focus on the road, to bring your car to a standstill if you have to. Perception, reaction and braking time after a distraction like this – even something
as minor as hitting two letters to type “OK” - is 25 metres, the equivalent of a lineup of 17 people. That’s a long time when you’re controlling a powerful, hunk of metal like a car. The truth is that cell phones have become every much as dangerous an addiction when driving as inebriation – even more so because they lack the ugly stigma associated with drunk driving. Yet the probability of being in a crash while you are distracted is horrifying. Texting, even just a word? You are 23 times more likely
to crash. Talking on your cell phone – four-to-five times more likely. And reading that ‘urgent’ email that simply couldn’t wait makes you three times more likely to be in a potentially fatal accident, according to research by CAA. Findings by ICBC show that distracted driving is the second leading contributing factor of vehicle fatalities in BC. That’s why, October 20, new penalties for distracted drivers were implemented in this province.

In that case, Bluetooth or wired headsets (worn only in one ear unless you are on a motorbike) are the next best thing. because driving while distracted and not crashing or causing an accident has more to do with luck than competence. And seriously, why wait for luck to run out? Overcoming that cell phone addiction on the road is as easy as turning off your phone and putting it in the glove box or trunk of your car, where you absolutely cannot reach it while you are driving. Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

At Kootenay Chrysler, we don’t sell you a car, we help you buy one.
Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Auto sensory overload in Niagara
By Alexandra Straub
Downtown Niagara Falls can induce sensory overload for some. Including myself. The Ontario city’s bright lights, flickering signs and novelty-themed stores take some time to absorb into the system. It’s a Las Vegas-like atmosphere, where even in the dead of night, you’d be fooled into thinking it’s daytime. The illuminated multicolour bulbs pulse as gatherers from all over soak
it all in. Then there are the casinos… One could also experience a sensory overload when a Jaguar F-Type R Coupe growls with purpose as it saunters down the road. Inside the cabin, you’re greeted with everything that might make your senses tingle. A carefully crafted cabin, an 8-speed automatic transmission and 550 prancing ponies from a 5.0L, V8 engine, wait patiently to be unleashed on a purpose-built
handling course. Not to mention, there’s also a Porsche 911 Turbo S, a BMW M4 and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible all eager to accompany you on a test loop. Those four vehicles comprise the Prestige – Performance (over $75K) category at the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s annual TestFest; a time when journalists from all across Canada have the opportunity to back-to-back test what’s

on the off-road portion of the test and drove really nicely on the road. Of course, I can’t complain when I have the keys to the seventh generation VW GTI, or the Subaru WRX STI, or even the BMW M235i. Yes, it’s fun to enjoy the combined effort of engineering, design, and execution prowess, but the modus operandi of the weeklong event is to pick the best of the best.

ru Outback 2.5i. And finally, Sports/Performance under $50k that allowed me to get behind the wheel of the BMW M235i, Ford Mustang (with the 2.3L, 4-cylinder Ecoboost engine), the Kia Forte Koup, Subaru WRX STI and the VW GTI. The Nissan Micra, for just under $16k is a great value and the car is fun to drive. Then there’s the Subaru Outback ($33,695- price as tested), which was a surprise for me. It didn’t break a sweat

Before my senses went into overdrive (with the Jaguar and others), I had a much more sensible time with my specifically assigned categories. Auto sensory overload and again. There’s room for five and a couple strollers in the trunk. A perfect family hatch?! Then there was the Challenger Hellcat. I mean, 707 horsepower in an urban setting seems like overkill, no? Nevertheless, Dodge has done a fabulous job with updating the interior and overall refinement of the vehicle that now turns even more heads. Winners will be announced here starting in December. alexandra.straub@drive-
a Tesla Model S (as would many), it’s just not always a reality. But the pint-sized smart and the roomier Soul EV are ideal urban rompers. Another noteworthy vehicle that impressed me was the Volvo V60 Polestar. Clad in a Rebel Blue exterior colour, it was a hoot experience. With 345 horsepower from a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, the all-wheel drive wagon is not only practical, but also something that left me wanting to drive it again

While it’s fantastic to take out some of the most incredible machines on the market, I was pleasantly surprised how much I took to the City Car category. Driving the Kia Soul EV and the smart fortwo electric drive were definite highlights. Being a huge fan of EVs, it’s nice to know that the category is growing. I mean, I’d love to be able to afford

Pick of the Week: What a boring photograph, so unusual a selection for picture of the week. Look a little closer because that QR code on the B pillar could be a lifesaver. When a crash occurs and the vehicle is seriously damaged, the priority for the rescue services is to free the occupants. This can be extremely dangerous for both occupants and first responders since the vehicle is equipped with many potentially hazardous components such as high voltage wiring, fuel lines as well as airbags and SRS pyrotechnics, all of which can be compromised depending on the severity of the impact.
While Mercedes-Benz information has been available to rescue teams for decades, it was traditionally provided in a printed format or downloadable as a pdf document. Today, it can be accessed by scanning a QR code with a smartphone, providing immediate access to a detailed rescue card which contains all of the structural details specific to a vehicle model, such as the location of airbags, battery, high strength steel (HSLA) and fuel tank. As part of its awareness campaign, Mercedes-Benz Canada has captured Kelowna’s Fire Hall No. 1 firefighters’ thoughts on Rescue Assist (http://bit. ly/10yVkWT).
