Whether in times of war or peace, we are ever grateful for these brave souls who put themselves in harm’s way for the greater good of all Canadians. This year, with continuing turmoil worldwide, the need becomes even more apparent to keep November 11 aside for current & future generations to remember and appreciate their courage and sacrifices made in the name of freedom. We believe that when we stand united in acts of remembrance, we can make a world of difference.

Your mayoral candidates: Richard Atwell

@AtwellRichard

Background: Software engineer, holds patents on iPod, Motorolla devices. Served as director of the Sewage Treatment Action Group, which advocates on behalf of citizens for alternative sewage treatment options at the Capital Regional District. How would you be a beneficial voice on council? I will bring my successful business experience, a thorough understanding of local issues, and proven leadership skills to the office of mayor. I want to build a vision for Saanich; a vision that is created through open governance and the creation of a citizen’s council. My vision is to create a place where our citizens will thrive, where businesses can grow and where our neighbourhoods will flourish. For example: family-centred villages; sports and entertainment venues for all residents to enjoy. We must also build on our local food culture through our schools and communities in and around Saanich. This is a vitally important investment in our local economy and public health. Innovative urban development, affordable sewage treatment, transportation improvements, protecting our agriculture and environment – these are important issues that we need to start working on now - together - to find realistic and long-term solutions. The #1 safety issue, the Trans Canada Highway at McKenzie Avenue, must be a top priority. I will work to get this back on the table with our federal, provincial and municipal counterparts. I am committed to working together with Saanich residents to bring about financially sound decisions; to look at current long-standing problems and find sustainable solutions to them; and I am committed to working collaboratively with our neighbouring municipalities and senior governments.

Frank Leonard

@Frank_Leonard

Background: Mayor of Saanich since 1996, on council since 1986. Previously managed family’s business, Victoria Tire Ltd.’s three Kal Tire stores prior to becoming mayor. Chair of the Municipal Finance Authority, Trustee of the Municipal Pension Plan former president of the Union of BC Municipalities. How would you be a beneficial voice on council? Together, we have built a sustainable, vibrant and healthy community. I wish to continue working with you to continue to enhance the community we call home. Saanich is known for its financial management. Through careful planning, we have increased our spending on pipes, roads, bridges and sidewalks. In four years, we will be one of few communities to have eliminated our infrastructure deficit. This is important for us, our children and grandchildren. We are a healthy and active community, with modern libraries, recreation and senior’s centres. Our parks, trails and natural spaces are second to none, especially our most recent acquisitions: Haro Woods, Panama Flats and Blenkinsop Lake. We support affordable housing projects through funding and approvals. This includes the Habitat for Humanity project in Cedar Hill, Cool-Aid transition housing on Quadra Street, and St Vincent de Paul housing on West Saanich Road. I am proud that Saanich is recognized as a leader in environmental programs. Our climate change initiatives have won awards, and we are a founding member of Partners for Climate Protection. I believe Saanich is a special place, where green space and commerce co-exist, and where we continue to work together for a healthier tomorrow.

Advanced voting open today, Monday

Busy on Nov. 15 during the general election day? Advanced voting in the District of Saanich is open today (Nov. 7) from noon to 6 p.m. at Gordon Head Recreation Centre, 4100 Lambrick Way. Find another advanced voting poll at Cordova Bay United Church, 813 Claremont Ave., between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. today.

On Monday, advanced voters can head to Saanich Municipal Hall, 770 Vernon Ave., between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. to cast a ballot. The District of Saanich will be mailing voter cards to registered electors on the voters list. You are not required to bring this card with you in order to vote; however, bringing the card will speed up the voting process. If a resident isn’t registered with a current Saanich address

Background: David is 71 years old, and since his first imprisonment at 14, says he has seen the Crown as a monstrous fraud. Through the many chapters of his life, he has run many businesses, but is most known for his work as the Garbage Guru junk hauler. He played a pivotal role in the Appeals Court of B.C. ruling that recognized the right to sleep and subsequently lead to the half-justice of sleeping being made legal, implicitly, in public during the day in Victoria. How would you be a beneficial voice on council? As it stands, the current municipal regimes have been deteriorating in conventionalism, having more concern with their careers than breaking free from the controls that have us locked in. Responsible government does not push itself into debt, at all costs. I know how to delegate and ask questions. I will not be afraid of losing my job as I will not be signing the “Oath of Office” (because the Crown is a monstrous fraud). Accepting that my term will not be longer than 45 days, I can scrutinize the entire process without bias. The days of retirements and vacations are coming to a close. If businesses cannot adhere to the required austerity, they will collapse. City hall will become a hub of survival expertise that recognizes community as the only thing that will see the people into the hard, hard future, with a 24/7 meet and greet space that will look remarkably like a tent city. Every bylaw will be scrutinized for constitutional compliance and discoveries will be made public. Police will have mandatory sensitivity training with focus on recognizing conscientious behaviour and if the cop culture does not toe the line, they will be replaced by a volunteer force.

Don Manastyrski Photography

One of many photographs taken by Saanich resident Don Manastyrski, for his new book Prairie Sunset, a photo essay that will be independently published in Canada through a successful round of crowdfunding.

Prairie farm life a draw for photographer Continued from Page A1

Manastyrski grew up in Saskatchewan but moved locally for the University of Victoria and stayed as a forest biology researcher with Natural Resources Canada at the Pacific Forestry Centre. Taking photos was part of his work which developed into a hobby. His annual visits with family in Saskatchewan doubled as photography trips, and he sometimes spent days seeking the right light to capture an old barn. Now retired, he’s focused on filling the book’s pre-orders, which should be out by January, if not earlier. Manastyrski chose to “independently publish” the book through Friesens Book Division in Manitoba. “It costs a lot to print in Canada but I really wanted to,

Don Manastyrski. and it’s a high-quality printer, which I really wanted.” The quality of the production means it will be at least $50 for the book and more than $70 to cover shipping. Those who pre-ordered the book with shipping earned a discount, a common trend with crowd funding. “I sold the shipped books at

$65 which is at least eight to 10 dollars less,” Manastyrski said. He finished compiling the book’s material with a fourmonth road trip this summer, his eighth and final road trip throughout Saskatachewan and Manitoba over the last 10 years. He also interviewed 70 people in total including retired farmers, former teachers of one-room schools and other longstanding community members to bring background context to the photos. “The words of the people it tells a story of the past Prairie life. Even though I grew up on a farm and knew about life there, I was still surprised to learn what it was like there before electricity, they grew their own food and preserved it, they lived without refrigeration and heated their

homes,” Manastyrski said. As the reader delves deep into the Prairie Sunset, the book becomes a story of self efficiency, Manastyrski said. “The community among the people was strong, they worked together a lot, and helped each other out, the further back you go the more obvious it was there was hardships. It was extremely difficult when they started out, they had a chunk of land and a box of tools.” See the a preview of the book at prairiesunset.ca. reporter@saanichnews.com

Having owned and operated two businesses, I know the importance of not micro managing day to day operations, but always discussing and communicating with staff, and looking for best management practices to reach better outcomes. Whether managing the financial plan or creating a strategic plan that has a long term vision with defined outcomes, it’s about being transparent and open. I follow new and emerging issues, like impacts with changing weather patterns and how to secure our infrastructure, assist our residents and businesses to be resilient in times of change. With our population aging we need to ensure our seniors stay connected. It is the main reason I got involved with the WHO Age Friendly Cities Project and today continue to work with my colleagues across Canada on new and emerging initiatives.

I respect a wide range of opinions and have earned a reputation of building consensus. My style is to listen, analyse facts and to come to common sense decisions. Experience has shown me that we accomplish positive outcomes for our community when we consider a broad range of opinions. I believe my voice around the council table contributes to sound and fiscally responsible decisions. My professional experience includes elementary school teacher; business and senior’s administrator and broadcaster. These responsibilities enable me to listen carefully, balance a budget and care deeply about all individuals from children to seniors and to communicate with clarity.

Climate change presents an uncertain, perhaps hostile, future. Local sustainability requires tough decisions and new directions. Poor choices could damage our exemplary quality of life and economic future. These “big” issues have to be addressed quickly and your new Council must provide leadership to accomplish exactly that. At the CRD, I have worked to insure the sewage project, with a huge budget and tax implications, responds to the big issues and provides clear value for money. I have also moved the Regional Sustainability Strategy closer to being the “future sustainability blueprint” we must have. At Saanich, I have worked with Council to see that decisions are guided by stated sustainability goals and plans. I offer progressive, visionary planning and decision making within a sound fiscal framework and will continue working to insure that you, and your children, see hope for a better future.

The front of my brochure says it all: “Committed to community building in Saanich.” I will continue to work to preserve and enhance the quality of life for all Saanich residents; Promote safe, healthy communities by supporting strong police, fire and bylaw enforcement departments; Encourage sustainable developments based on Smart Growth principles, and promote the concept of complete communities, with amenities and mixed-use development supporting major urban centres; Support a strong local economy and business opportunities; Promote fiscal responsibility while maintaining essential services and without neglecting important infrastructure projects; Support a co-operative regional vision to planning and transportation choices; Protect the Urban Containment Boundary and ALR lands; Support the Regional Housing Trust Fund and other affordable housing initiatives.

I will work to deliver a Saanich where families 25 years on can continue to afford to live, work and raise their children. We deserve better solutions for addressing sustainability, Costs of living for all ages, governance that engages residents and climate change. For me, sustainability includes our environment, communities, food, lifestyles and culture, transportation, jobs and economy. On governance I ask for structured formal access to Councilors who are CRD Directors, a protocol for open mic at the start of council and committees, and live web streaming of council meetings. I support the task force on food security. I believe we should utilize the kitchen scraps program to improve our farmland. I ask for a task force on affordable workplace and retirement home ownership and a municipal focus on growing family sustaining jobs.

Saanich has good information on food security, transportation issues, housing affordability, even how public participation could work. Movement on these issues, even after decades, has either been very slow, made without effective public consultation or not fully thought out. The results are often increased cost, health and safety issues and in some cases, outraged neighbourhoods. From my own preliminary analysis, there are a number of areas where I believe costs could be lowered without compromising benefits. Moving ahead on important issues requires planning that’s flexible enough to accommodate changes as they come. I believe no one person has the answers, and to involve a range of people in the process of deciding an issue can help find the most effective solutions.

Rebecca Mersereau

Dean Murdock

Shawn Newby

There is a need for change on the current Council to bring new ideas forward, and to ensure future challenges and neglected issues, such as the demographic shift and affordable housing and services, receive the attention they are due. My election to Saanich Council would also result in an elected body that is more representative of our region’s age demographics and progressive views. I would push for more opportunities for the public to have input on important decisions, such as budget and service priorities, as well as infrastructure projects. I feel strongly that our elected officials should be more accessible to members of the public and accountable for their decisions, which rarely stack up against the promises and commitments made in various planning documents and in election campaigns. In contrast, I am willing to deliver on my commitments.

I will continue to focus on delivering results that improve transportation options with better transit service new sidewalks and bike lanes. I believe in providing affordable housing so families can afford to live and work in Saanich. We need to do more to protect our farmland and promote local food production. We must continue to lead on climate action and environmental protection. I want to see Saanich adopt an even more open process that encourages residents to participate in the decision-making process. Let’s make sure that the decisions we make for Saanich’s future come from a community-based process that reflects our community values. Together we can make Saanich an even better place to live, work, learn and play for our children and grandchildren.

I was born and raised in Saanich. It is a great place to live and work. I come from a small business background. I know what it takes to organize people and implement procedures to get the job done. I know how to bring an idea to reality. Building a business from the ground up takes dedication and determination and that is needed on council to address the challenges that face Saanich. As a young and “colourful” council member, I would be able to engage part of the community that doesn’t usually have an interest in how the community is governed. With only 25 per cent of residents interested in how the municipality operates, there is 75 per cent of residents without a voice. I can bring the whole community together to strengthen our municipality for generations to come.

ICBC brings fall focus to pedestrian safety Andrea Peacock Victoria News

The end of daylight savings time brings shorter days and decreased visibility for drivers and pedestrians. With that, ICBC has created a new pedestrian safety campaign. Community police volunteers will be handing out reflectors and road safety tips to passersby at bus stops and various locations. “Every year in November on Vancouver Island, 64 per cent of crashes involving pedestrians

occur in intersections,” said Colleen Woodger, ICBC road safety coordinator. Part of the campaign is educating pedestrians on the importance of being visible to drivers in the dark. “We actually want people to stop and think about their behaviour when they’re out walking,” said Woodger. Victoria Police Department Sgt. Ron Cronk said 70 per cent more pedestrians are injured in crashes from November to January compared to June to August. “It’s getting darker, and

they’re simply not being seen.” said Cronk. “Never assume the driver’s seen you. You can’t always assume they’re going to stop at stop signs and traffic signals.” Another part of the campaign is giving tips to drivers for keeping an eye out for pedestrians. “It’s a shared responsibility,” said Woodger. The campaign is happening all across B.C. The kickoff for Victoria took place on Monday in front of the B.C. legislative building. editor@saanichnews.com

Saanich Votes: Election 2014 Colin Plant

Vicki Sanders

My training as a teacher at Claremont secondary has helped me to develop the ability to see potential in students. I see this skill as very useful when thinking of Saanich. I believe we have the potential to be the greatest community in Canada to live in. We just need to tap into the our greatest resource; the citizens of Saanich. I’m also the president of the Royal Oak Community Association. Every successful organization needs an injection of new ideas and energy periodically in order to stay relevant and vital. I believe Saanich council needs this injection of new voices in the election of 2014. I would like to be a new councillor that brings energy, humility, and a desire to connect with and serve residents on Saanich council. Let’s make Saanich the greatest and greenest place to live in Canada.

Because of my experience as a council member and CRD alternate director, I know the processes, the people and the issues of Saanich and the Capital Regional District. My strength is bringing people together to accomplish a common goal. I take the time to listen, to research and then I take action. I can get things done for the people of Saanich and for the Capital Regional District. I am a strong independent voice on Saanich Council and at the CRD. In addition to my strong community roots I now have nine years of experience on council, and along with that, a proven track record locally and regionally serving on key committees, such as Saanich’s Administrative Traffic Committee, Finance and Personnel Committee, Environmental Advisory Committee and Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee.

Nichola Wade

Leif Wergeland

I am committed to advancing the excellent work we have undertaken to ensure Saanich is accessible, affordable and inclusive. These key drivers underline all my work. Working to the principles embodied in the Sustainable Saanich Official Community Plan, combined with the rigour provided by our Strategic Plan, keeps me focussed on delivering the service the citizens of Saanich want and need. My background in climate action is a lens through which I view proposals and activities in Saanich. Our citizens deserve the continued leadership in climate action response we have shown to date. As a rural resident, I am keenly aware of the importance of our valuing our green space, honouring and supporting our agricultural past and future, and protecting and preserving our high quality of life. Combining my local government experience with my business education, I am committed to managing resources wisely.

Having spent my first 20 years growing up on a family farm, I have an understanding of many farming issues. I operated a successful business in the region for 25 years and as such have good understand of financial management and stewardship. I understand the importance of working effectively with stakeholders (community staff, council. etc.) if community concerns are to be heard and acted upon. I understand the importance of budgeting and spending within that budget. I believe in sustainability and the balance between social, environmental and economic interests. I believe in consulting with residents and stakeholders as we plan for the future. I have a strong belief in fairness and common sense and have found that most people of all ages and walks appreciate and understand those values.

Stone backs down on Island ferry routes Tom Fletcher Black Press

Transportation Minister Todd Stone has backed away from a proposal by BC Ferries that it should consolidate its two Nanaimo ferry terminals, after objections from B.C. Liberal MLAs on both sides of the route. Stone said Tuesday that BC Ferries should consider whether it still needs both ferry terminals at Nanaimo, a legacy of the NDP government’s decision in the 1990s to build Duke Point. BC Ferries calculates that its Nanaimo runs have higher costs and lower ridership than the main Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay run that serves Victoria. But on Wednesday, Stone ruled out that possibility. “I indicated yesterday that while we weren’t endorsing or supporting the idea, it may be worthy of consideration,” Stone said by phone from Regina Wednesday. “Over the last 24 hours, I’ve had some very good conversations with my Island colleagues, Don McRae (Comox

Valley) and Michelle Stilwell (Parksville-Qualicum) as well as my pariliamentary secretary Jordan Sturdy (West Vancouver-Sea to Sky). They’ve made some very strong and eloquent arguments to me that they don’t believe closing one of the two terminals at Nanaimo would be a good thing, not just for the economy of Nanaimo, but potentially the economy of the mid-Island.” However, the completion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road through Delta and expensive refits required at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal in North Vancouver could result in a shift of some mainland-to-Nanaimo ferry traffic to the Tsawwassen terminal in the coming years. BC Ferries has released a new major route strategy that proposes ending the Horseshoe Bay-Nanaimo run and putting the traffic on the TsawwassenDuke Point route, which has had sailings cut due to low usage. Stone also ruled out BC Ferries’ suggestion to consider a passenger-only ferry from Departure Bay in downtown

Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay. Horseshoe Bay has congestion problems on the water as well as on land, where vehicles line up along the highway before stacking up in a two-level “transfer deck” to board the ship. That dock structure is due for replacement at an estimated cost of $200 million. Horseshoe Bay terminal also serves the Sunshine Coast via Langdale and a third run to Bowen Island with smaller vessels. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan compares it to an airport with only one runway, with ferries lining up to a terminal that can only load and unload one at a time. Tsawwassen has multiple berths that can handle simultaneous loading and unloading. Both Stone and Corrigan emphasized that BC Ferries has to look beyond tinkering with under-used routes to keep fare increases in check. “This is a longer-term project,” Corrigan told CKNW radio. “It’s not something we’re going to do overnight.” editor@saanichnews.com

Peninsula Co-op chips in for new climbing wall at UVic’s CARSA Travis Paterson News staff

A rock climbing wall is becoming one of the most anticipated features of the University of Victoria’s new Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA). The 16-metre climbing tower was officially named the Peninsula Co-op Climbing Wall, as Peninsula Co-op became CARSA and UVic’s first corporate partner on Tuesday. Avid rock climber and UVic student Jessica Elliott trumpeted the new wall on behalf of students. “It’s going to be awesome to be able to go climbing on class breaks and the climbing wall will provide a chance for students to try climbing. It’s a super sport with a chance to challenge yourself and socialize at the same time.” Corporate naming partnerships are a growing trend, but it’s the first of its kind at UVic. “Peninsula Co-op is very proud to be the first corporate naming partner with UVic and CARSA,”

said Patti Hunter, chair of the member relations committee at Peninsula Co-op and longtime chair and volunteer with KidSport Victoria. “Peninsula Co-op believes in giving back to the communities where we do business and CARSA is a perfect fit for us,” she said. CARSA is due to open in the spring of 2015. The wall is tallest university climbing wall in B.C. It is centrally located in Carsa’s 25-metre (80-foot) atrium. reporter@saanichnews.com

OUR VIEW

Poppy pride strengthens During the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign, some 18 million poppies and 70,000 wreaths, crosses and sprays are distributed across Canada and overseas. Donated funds gained from the sale of poppies go towards veterans programs in local jurisdictions (a common misunderstanding is that poppies help fund legion halls; however the legions rely solely on memberships and hall rentals to fund their spaces.) Locally, Legion reps are noticing a spike in demand which they believe is connected to the Ottawa shooting, in which young reservist Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down by a mentally ill man on Oct. 22. Another hit-andrun incident in Quebec on Oct. 20 that left a soldier dead is creating similar sentiment, and rightfully so. Canadians have a way of rising above tragedy and finding the common good amongst one another. Instead of anger and war-mongering, we choose a path of understanding, empathy and remembrance. As the effects of the Ottawa shooting resonate through the House of Commons over the coming months, it’s important to keep the tenet of freedom trumpeting across the country so our elected officials take note of what matters. The First and Second World Wars were fought and won in the name of freedom. Let us not forget those we lost, and let us not lose sight of how fragile that freedom remains. Here’s a salute to the courage of those who came before us.

Let us not lose sight of how fragile our freedom remains.

Municipal boundaries a mishmash Re: But what have they done for you lately? Editorial (Nov. 5) You mention that elderly residents often do not have access to information regarding the candidates in the upcoming election. Worse than that is the fact that I am a Saanich resident who has not received one item of candidate information in my mailbox. Yet I am deluged by all manner of advertising from City of Victoria candidates. I will presume this to mean that neither the Saanich candidates nor the Victoria candidates have a clue about the boundaries of their own municipalities. Either that, or Canada Post doesn’t have a clue. None of this is addressed mail, however someone paid to have this information delivered to my address and those of my neighbours. I would love to know the point of even voting in an election where the candidates supposed to represent my interests don’t even know that I live in their municipality. I, however, will go out and vote, probably for David Shebib, not because I think he would make a good mayor, but because he is bringing to light the ridiculousness of the number of municipalities and the problems this creates. Problems I personally have

encountered: 1. Contacting the police for an outdoor situation where the people involved are possibly on one side or other of the boundary between Victoria and Saanich I have experienced this on two occasions. 2. I have a L.I.F.E. pass issued by Saanich, and because of the proximity of a community centre that offers classes, I decided to register for a class. I followed instructions that sent me to Crystal Pool for approval to register. After making my way down there on two buses, I find out that they are not involved because I have a Saanich LIFE pass. I contacted the community centre, three short blocks from my home, who said I was ineligible for a half price course because they weren’t affilliated with Saanich Rec in any way. Valerie Green Saanich

Dog owners barking up wrong tree Re: Doggie bus rides up for debate, News (Nov. 5) I am very unhappy with the dog people and their efforts to force us to accept their thoughts (and dogs). I experience over-crowding on the buses often and wonder where they think the dogs could go. Also, the allergies and fear of dogs are a concern in allowing them onboard without cages. Why would Daphne Taylor think I should have to put up with dog hair on my nice clean clothes? I think she is really being unfair as I would not expect her to do so if it was from my animal. Maybe if they are successful in their petition, I can bring my exotic pets along with my goat, calf and chickens. James Turner Saanich

COMMUNITY NEWS New shops open at Uptown Kelowna’s Bone and Biscuit natural pet food store is one of four new tenants moving into Uptown ahead of the Christmas season. It’s the latest wave of tenants to open at Uptown, as the Saanich “open-air

mall” has completed two thirds of its building phases since opening phase one in 2010. Also moving in this month are Montreal-based Dynamite and Garage, a women’s fashion store, Escents Aromatherapy, a Vancouverbased seller of natural botanicals, and American accessories giant Charming Charlie, which carries jewellery, bags, shoes and accessories. Steve Nash Fitness World is scheduled to open for Dec. 20, while a mix of pop-up

stores will also appear during the holiday season. Uptown says it is in the planning stage to fill the Best Buy space on Uptown’s upper level, one of the remaining retail spaces still vacant. An announcement on that space is expected in the near future.

B.C. communities care. So do the Black Press newspapers that directly serve those communities. Reflecting and raising awareness of that caring spirit is part of the core mandate of every Black Press community newspaper. This publication is now part of an exciting new initiative undertaken by Black Press in British Columbia that works to further communicate the good work being done in communities, and provide a new opportunity for organizations and individuals to tap into that fountain of caring. BlackPress4Good.com is an online platform that brings the popular and successful phenomenon of crowdfunding to Black Press readers. Charitable projects, causes and campaigns are now able to deliver their message on the community level, safely and securely, in an online format to reach the vast digital audience and funding sources. “Crowdfunding provides a means for individuals, organizations and businesses to raise money by appealing to the public,” explained Andrew Franklin, project lead for Black Press. “This platform is community focused and will be enhanced through the power of your local newspaper. The audience will be very aware of the campaigns and it will be up to the public as to whether they make a donation or not. Early indications show very positive signs. In addition to the exposure through your community media, the success of the campaigns will also rely on active social media participation. Anyone can set up a campaign, however there

are safeguards in place to ensure each campaign is legitimate,” Franklin said. Black Press has launched this new community service in partnership with FundRazr, the platform at the roots of BlackPress4Good.com. More than 40,000 people and groups around the world have raised in excess of $50 million via FundRazr. Fundraisers register online via the link on this newspaper’s website home page, provide information about their objectives and fund recipients, and their project profiles are then posted on a dedicated website page to reach out to readers, who can monitor the progress of a specific cause. Supporters make their donations via PayPal, a secure and wellestablished digital payment system. Under 10 per cent of the total amount raised will be levied by FundRazr, PayPal and Black Press to recover the adminis-

tration, support, marketing and hosting costs associated with this initiative. Readers will also have the opportunity to be inspired and touched by the good news content of the Black Press 4Good blog, at blogs.blackpress4good.com/. Phoenix Theatre punks Midsummer Nights Christine van Reeuwyk

Coming soon

News staff

Open your heart to enjoy a 1970s interpretation of A Midsummer Nights Dream at the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre this month. “You want to come with an open mind, with an idea of revering Shakespeare’s themes, but enjoying them with the backdrop of the late ’70s,” says director Fran Gebhard, “scored by the music of the decade and images of the time period.” Virtually all the original wordsmith’s text is there, she promises, though references to Athens become “the city” and other minor alterations. “I like this play very, very much and we’ve all seen traditional productions of it. I just started listening to the music of the ‘70s … I started with the idea that rather than being fairies, I would think of those gals as sisters in a white which coven.” Harnessing her own experiences from a summer in NYC, and some of the 1970s most iconic music, Gebhard found New York a perfect setting for, as it’s affectionately called, the “Dream”. The two pairs of lovers – Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius – wander from the safety of Park Avenue to Central Park, and find themselves at the mercy of powerful forces (and their own passions) as clashing gangs manoeuvre for control. As Gebhard points out, in the late 1970s, the 700-acres of Central Park could be dangerous to some, but enticingly exciting to others. “I thought, here was an environment where Titania and her hippie coven, Oberon and his punk gang, and the lovers fleeing the tyranny of parental law could all believably coexist – and

n A lost Portuguese girl observes the troubled lives of her community and finds forgiveness in Lion in the Streets by Judith Thompson and directed by Conrad Alexandrowicz which runs Feb. 12 to 21, 2015 at Phoenix Theatre.

collide through one bewitching evening.” She has been having tons of fun working with the 24 theatre students in the cast, her colleague and set designer Allan Stichbury, and the other students on the creative team. “We’re having a really good time and the students are enjoying themselves. For me, I want to make this learning experience a positive one, for them and for the audience,” Gebhard said. The setting also allows for a show beyond the acting, allowing for some “rock lighting.” “We pay to see our favourite stars not only because they sing well, but because they provide a show that’s evocative,” she said. “I like to make a production work on all kinds of levels for all kinds of audience members.” “We have a loyal following of season ticket holders who are 50-plus, there may be some purists who won’t like the choices,” she said, taking full ownership. “I take full responsibility for some of the quirky choices.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream is onstage at the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre now through Nov. 22. Welcome to the driver’s seat

Visit the TestFest gallery at DrivewayCanada.ca

TestFest puts green machines and gas-guzzlers through their paces wider, the all-new seventh-generation You gotta love a competition that pits Volkswagen Golf is my pick. It’s an a small, zero emissions 74-horsepower even more refined hatchback and I loved (Smart Car) electric vehicle against a its new base turbocharged 1.8-litre 707-horsepower, tire-smoking (Dodge engine. That’s Price (base/as tested): what’s on the cards if both vehicles win $19,995/$24,295 their categories in this edition of the Acceleration 0 to 100 km/hour: Canadian Car of the Year Competition. 8.4 seconds This was the second year in a row that Same-day, back- Braking 100 to 0 Km/hour: 41.4 metres TestFest was held in Niagara Falls, OnFuel economy (city/highway): 9.3/6.5 tario, and once again, the Niagara Parks to-back vehicle L/100 km Commission, at the Legends on the Nicategory assessments agara Golf Course, hosted it. City Car: Kia Soul EV & Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. Bob’s Pick: Both entries are small electric vehicles and they’re close in terms of performance, but the Kia Soul EV is my choice. It seats five (instead of two), has more cargo space and rides nicer, making it a more practical everyday car. Price (base/as tested): $34,995/$34,995 Acceleration 0 to 100 km/hour: 10.5 seconds Braking 100 to 0 Km/hour: 43.4 metres Fuel economy (city/highway): 2.0/2.6 Le/100 km Small Car - Over $21,000: Mini Cooper, Kia Forte5 & Volkswagen Golf. Bob’s Pick: The winner of this category should be a strong contender for the overall car of the year title. Lower, longer and

Luxury Car - Over $50,000: Acura RLX Hybrid, Cadillac ATS Coupe, Hyundai Genesis & Kia K900. Bob’s Pick: My clear winner here is the Acura RLX Hybrid, a large all-wheel drive luxury sedan that’s fun to drive, yet very easy on fuel. It uses a 3-motor hybrid powertrain with a front electric motor & twin rear motors. The drivetrain also includes a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Price (base/as tested): $49,990/$69,990 Acceleration 0 to 100 km/hour: 6.0 seconds Braking 100 to 0 Km/hour: 44.3 metres Fuel economy (city/highway): 8.0/7.5 L/100 km Sports Performance - Over $50,000: Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang GT & Volvo

V60 Polestar. Bob’s Pick: Priced well below the other two entries in this category, the new Ford Mustang GT provides excellent bang for the buck and looks awesome. Price (base/as tested): $42,499/$51,899 Acceleration 0 to 100 km/hour: 6.2 seconds Braking 100 to 0 Km/hour: 39.5 metres Fuel economy (city/highway): 15.2/9.3 L/100 km SUV/CUV - $35,000 to $60,000: Chevrolet Tahoe, Lincoln MKC, Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 & Toyota Highlander. Bob’s Pick: Big can be beautiful, as Chevrolet Tahoe has evolved into a more drive-able vehicle that offers a supremely comfortable ride, can pull a (3863 kg) mountain and the new EcoTec 5.3 litre V8 engine provides decent fuel economy, especially on the highway. Price (base/as tested): $57,245/$59,460 Acceleration 0 to 100 km/hour: 8.0 seconds Braking 100 to 0 Km/hour: 42.1 metres Fuel economy (city/highway): 14.9/10.1 L/100 km SUV/CUV - Over $60,000: GMC Yukon XL, Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG & Porsche Macan. Bob’s Pick: A performance utility vehicle that actually can go off-road, the Porsche Macan came with an optional (height adjustable & self levelling) air suspension. On a paved road…it’s a Porsche! Price (base/as tested): $54,300/$64,030 Acceleration 0 to 100 km/hour: 5.2 seconds Braking 100 to 0 Km/hour: 38.1 metres Fuel economy (city/highway): 13.7/10.3 L/100 km

Safety Tip: Speed-related crashes increase significantly from October to December in B.C. Speed limits are set for ideal conditions only. When roads are wet, icy or snowy, leave more following distance, slow down, and give yourself more time to get where you’re going.

WE ARE CANADA’S TIRE AUTHORITY!

Tahoe is up to the big towing tasks By Zack Spencer

The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is part of a full suite of large trucks from General Motors. These range from the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Denali and the Cadillac Escalade. Something of interest is the preference Canadians have for the GMC brand over the Chevrolet trucks, which are the most popular in the United States. More Canadians go for GMC and the US loves Chevrolet, the complete reverse.

Looks

Inside

One of the biggest changes in the full-size pickup trucks is the level of refinement and ride quality and this has migrated into this Tahoe, the cabin is quiet and refined. This is done through a number of advancements; one of the biggest is the way the doors wrap into the roof to help shut out road and wind noise. The next big advantage is the attention to detail in the front cabin. There is a big screen, front and centre, with easy to use and access rotary dials and switches.

LANGFORD and family campers with ease. The Tahoe uses the same 355hp 5.3L V8 engine found in the full-size pickup trucks. It uses direct injection technology and has the ability to switch off half of the cylinders to help save fuel. There is a small indicator light on the instrument cluster that tells the driver when the engine is running on just 4-cylinders. This helps the driver feather the throttle to keep the engine in this fuel saving mode as long as possible. When more power is needed, the engine automatically reverts to all eight cylinders for maximum power.

Stingray. This system monitors the road condition up to 1000 times per second and adjusts the shock absorbers up to 100 times per second to improve ride and handling. TThe GMC Denali and Cadillac Escalade trucks have a larger 6.2L V8, which is much quicker and more capable. This Tahoe is just part of the fullline of trucks from GM that dominate the market, and for good reason. These are well-designed, well-made and supremely comfortable vehicles for a large family.

The two-wheel drive Tahoe is the value leader in the GM line of full-size trucks, starting at $51,900-- the GMC comes with a $2000 premium over the Chevy. Yes, this is an expensive vehicle but keep in mind that towing is a big reason why people purchase such big trucks. With a towing capacity of 3856kg (8500 lbs.) in two-wheel drive trim and 3765 (8300 lbs.) with four wheel drive, the Tahoe is up to the task of towing most pleasure boats

In the Chevrolet family the Tahoe is the short wheelbase version and the Suburban is the longer wheelbase model, with much more cargo space behind the third row of seats. The Tahoe sits very high off the ground so the power side step is a wonderful addition along with a power tailgate and backup camera. How did we ever live without these amenities before? The biggest change is the front lighting package GM has used on this Chevrolet. LED daytime running lights make a statement and the monster grille with the big

At home on the Serengeti and in the city By Ian Harwood

without damaging it. To my surprise, the vehicle performed just fine. I had driven on a steep side slope without and problem although my passenger was a little worried we were going to roll. I took it through a series of wellplaced ditches to test the articulation and managed to raise the passenger front tire easily three feet in the air while I teetered back and forth. A section of deep mud was no problem with the rear differential lock on. There was no chance of this being stuck. Besides there was no way I was calling

The recent Mercedes G-Class increased the aggressiveness of its physique. And, as a result, the G550 I tested can now navigate around the rhinos in the African Serengeti as well navigate the busy streets of downtown Vancouver without looking out of place! – Many would think you’re crazy to take a Mercedes off-road, but this vehicle has been exploring Africa and Asia for decades.

Looks:

It has a European look at the front end, with two marker lights on top of the fenders and LED light strips just below the headlights. A large Mercedes emblem is proudly displayed in the centre of the grille. The large wheel well openings and fender flares contribute to the aggressive look but serve a practical purpose in allowing for full travel of the suspension without letting the tires rub.

In The Cab:

Good vision on all sides. The cabin is extremely

well laid out. Controls are easily reached and I like the carbon fibre look over the wood burl. Three rocker switches on the dash control the centrifugal lock on the transfer case, the rear differential lock, and the front differential lock. When you engage these locks, an audible sound appears along with a light on the dash. The navigation screen is just above the centre stack on the dash. It looks a little out of place, almost if it

were an iPad placed there. I would have liked to have seen more of integration into the dash. The seats are very comfortable and controlled from the door panel. The steering wheel has a piano black lacquer on the smooth surfaces and the upholstery is ‘designo’ leather giving this space a luxurious feel to it.

Safety first:

Driver and front passenger air bag, side and rear head airbag. 4 wheel ABS,

traction control, electronic stability control, and brake assist. In the event of an accident the engine is automatically turned off, hazard lights are turned on, and doors are automatically unlocked. Now that is thinking! I had the opportunity to test this vehicle on the back roads. I have to admit I was a little sceptical of taking this vehicle through the mud and steep washouts

The G550 is equipped with a 5.5 Litre V8, which has an output of 382 hp and 391 ft lb of torque. The transmission is a 7G-TRONIC plus, that has been around since 1960, although updated to handle today’s requirements. Pump frequency:

I do not think people are going out to buy this luxury vehicle to drive some rough back roads but it would be comforting to know it can.

Look a little closer because that QR code on the B pillar could be a lifesaver. When a crash occurs and the vehicle is seriously damaged, the priority for the rescue services is to free the occupants. This can be extremely dangerous for both occupants and first responders since the vehicle is equipped with many potentially hazardous components such as high voltage wiring, fuel lines as well as airbags and SRS pyrotechnics, all of which can be compromised depending on the severity of the impact. While Mercedes-Benz information has been available to rescue teams for decades, it was traditionally provided in a printed format or downloadable as a pdf document. Today, it can be accessed by scanning a QR code with a smartphone, providing immediate access to a detailed rescue card which contains all of the structural details specific to a vehicle model, such as the location of airbags, battery, high strength steel (HSLA) and fuel tank. As part of its awareness campaign, Mercedes-Benz Canada has captured Kelowna’s Fire Hall No. 1 firefighters’ thoughts on Rescue Assist (http://bit.ly/10yVkWT).

Local author, war historian honoured Victoria News

A Victoria author has received the prestigious 2014 Pierre Berton Award, recognizing his contribution to raising awareness about Canadian history. Mark Zuehlke was at Rideau Hall in Ottawa Monday to receive the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media. Presented by Gov. Gen. David Johnston, the award celebrates those who have brought Canadian history to a wider audience. The award comes as Zuehlke launches the 11th title in his acclaimed Canadian Battle Series of books last week, Forgotten Victory: First Canadian Army and the Cruel Winter of 1944-45, the untold story of how the Canadian Army paved the way

get

for an Allied victory in Europe in the Second World War through an attack against the Rhineland. To receive the award bearing Berton’s name and for the body of his contribution, as opposed to a single title, is particularly rewarding. “I personally think Pierre Berton was a person who truly made it legitimate to write popular history in Canada,” Zuehlke says. Harbour Publishing describes the bestselling Canadian Battle Series as “the most detailed account of any army during World War II ever written by a single author. The series continues to confirm Zuehlke’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading popular military historians.” “To me, the whole idea is to take these stories and put them in the hands of the people and be informed by them,” Zuehlke says. would become the Canadian Battle Series, Ortona, he had no idea of the series to come. Sparked by a group of veterans speaking about their experiences at the long-ago battle, it was one Zuehlke himself hadn’t heard of. “I thought it was going to be a one-off but it turned out it did quite well,” he says. Several more titles about the Italian campaign followed, along with books about Juno, Dieppe and other campaigns deserving recognition. His fifth title in the series, Holding Juno, captured the 2006 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. “From there I started looking at campaigns that I thought hadn’t been given their due,” Zuehlke says. While he had no finite end to the series in mind, he anticipates 14 or 15 books in all. Why are these stories important? “I think it’s important because when you look at the generation that went through World War II... when they came back, everything they did for the rest of their lives was indelibly pushed forward by these experiences,” Zuehlke says, pointing to the creation of the welfare state as an example. “They had depended on each other for their lives and that kind of bond was an unbreakable one.” Upon their return, that desire to take care of each other continued. “And of course, it affected all of us because we are all descended from that generation.” At the same time, because so many of that generation did not speak about their experiences, it’s the role of historians and authors like Zuehlke to share them with those who Laura Shawchuk photo came after. The response to the Author Mark Zuehlke. series has been very positive, Zuehlke says. Initially coming from the expected veterans and history community, “readership has shifted,” he notes. Readers are now 40 to 45 per cent female, many in the 35 to 65-year-old group; the male readers fall in a similar demographic. These are people who are interested in their family stories, and learning about the generations that came before, reflective perhaps of a similar upsurge in interest Zuehlke sees in Remembrance Day generally. “I’m very heartened when I go to the cenotaphs on November 11 and see all these families there with their kids; you didn’t see that 15 years ago,” he says. “I think people started thinking about remembrance more.”

Book Launch Join Mark Zuehlke at Munro’s Books beginning at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 26 (doors at 7 p.m.), to celebrate the launch of Forgotten Victory.

Poppy demand high this year The Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign started Friday, but the demand for poppies came much earlier than normal this year. The early interest was a result of the shooting in Ottawa and the hit-and-run in Quebec, said Inga Kruse, executive director of the Royal Canadian Legion BC/Yukon. “Usually people are happy to wait for the campaign to start,” said Kruse. Although the demand for poppies started before the campaign’s official launch, Kruse said the Legion was not been able to raise money through the sales until Friday. “By our own bylaws, we aren’t permitted to accept donations until the campaign formally starts,” Kruse said. However, she is sure people who picked up their poppies early will return to donate. “It’s about commemoration, it’s about remembrance. We just want everyone to be wearing one,” she said. Besides donating with cash to the Legion, people can also text to donate to the Poppy Campaign by texting “poppy” to 20222 from a mobile phone to donate $5. War-time tunes resonated across two World Wars Maritime Museum compiles songs that defined both wars in run-up to Saturday musical performance at St. Luke’s This year, the Western world has been engaged in marking the centenary of the First World War. We are fearfully watching its legacy today as the Middle East and Africa erupt in sectarian conflict, much of which can be traced directly to the geographical boundaries drawn in those regions by European colonialist powers following the First World War. Personal grief and tragedy, too, have left their indelible marks, but one of the lighter legacies of this conflict was in popular Kate Humble music. Maritime History I have been meditating on this as we at the Maritime Museum of B.C. put together a performance of a First World War Musical Revue. I was speaking with my 97-year-old grandmother (who lost her father in the war) about the songs we’ve chosen for the set and she remarked: “Isn’t it interesting how the Second World War mostly re-used the songs from the First War, rather than producing its own, aside from White Cliffs of Dover?” This anecdotal testimony does seem to be remarkable, especially considering that by the 1940s most families had their own radio and therefore immediate access to popular music. A Billboard Pop Chart was actually published was 1940. In 1914-1918, by contrast, popular music was mostly experienced via sheet music played on one’s home piano, or via a recording, played on a phonograph or gramophone. And so, I looked through lists of Second World War music and discovered that while there were new hits on the radio, the songs sung by soldiers were almost all exactly those sung by soldiers 25 years before. Something about that music really stayed in the collective consciousness. Pop culture is of course not a modern phenomenon: it has only become more adaptable thanks to modern technology and the ease of dissemination which it enables. Prior to 1914, popular music was rapidly evolving. The earliest jazz and ragtime rhythms were seeping into music and changing not only what we heard, but how we danced, how we socialized, and how we expressed ourselves. At the outbreak of the war, perhaps the most popular song in dance and music halls was Alexander’s Ragtime Band with its familiar and very prescient refrain: “They can play a bugle call like you never heard before/ So natural that you want to go to war.” The ragged tune and rollicking beat was foreshadowing for the jazz explosion that followed in the 1920s. The lyrics, however, were alarmingly on-point.

When men began signing up for a jolly good fight in 1914, the music they marched and sang to as they headed to the bloodbath of Europe echoed their optimism. The assumption was that the war would be short, and would provide adventure and an opportunity for young men to prove themselves in battle. Stirring tunes with a distinctly patriotic tinge dominated the training corps and the dance halls. Pieces like I Love You Canada tugged at the heartstrings of soldiers and their families, with lyrics like “Though shot and shell are flying, Canada I think of thee/ It’s the land I’d do or die for, and my heart is there always.” Simple music and easily memorized lyrics created a long-lasting impact. One of my favourites has the rather whimsical title of Goodbyeee. There is a playful, upbeat element to this piece, which describes “brother Bertie” going to war “with a smile on his lips and his lieutenant pips upon his shoulder bright and gay”. However, as the war dragged on, the music’s tone changed. Songs like Keep the Home Fires Burning rang out on the home front as wives and mothers confronted loss and longing for their boys overseas. One surviving letter to the Canadian Field Comforts Commission is from a soldier who wrote to thank them for sending the soldiers harmonicas, which were always used on their marches to and from the front lines. Music like Pack up your Troubles and It’s a Long Way to Tipperary dominated these journeys. Their cheerful melodies and hopeful lyrics were integral to maintaining morale in rat-infested, blood soaked trenches. These songs were used again during the Second World War. Some men who fought in the First World War were still young enough to enlist in the Second, and brought their trench songs to another era of warfare altogether. Their tunes and lyrics remain with us now, and not just in the minds of people of my grandmother’s generation. Most people can still hum or sing along to them today, which helps us to remember the young men and women whose voices were silenced 100 years ago. ••• Kate Humble is the interpretive co-ordinator at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia.

Blast technology a boon for building Industry standards for rock blasting are tightly regulated in Saanich thanks to technology Travis Paterson News staff

Blasting rock for the purposes of building has increased dramatically, thanks in part to Saanich’s rocky surface and the advancements in technology. Engineering companies such as Western Grater Contracting provide a number of services, and blasting is a key one. They’re called on to blast out rock for more than just the foundations of new homes, but also for renovations and upgrades. “Blasting for renovations or upgrades is equally as common as blasting for new houses, though it’s not often in average homeowner’s budget, unless it’s a questionably compromised (foundation) or bank,” said Western Grater project director Matt Floch. With less undeveloped property available in 2014 than in the past, and the added value of real estate, there is a general acceptance among builders and developers to build on property that will require substantial blasting for the foundation. “In the old days, the 1980s and 90s, you would avoid bedrock more often, you didn’t want to blast if you didn’t have to. But it’s changed,” said Gerry Koutougos, a developer who partnered on the 42-unit Midtown Park condominium in Saanich. While the soil below Midtown Park was without any substantial rock, Kougtougos has been building Saanich houses and other deveiopments on top of bedrock since the 1980s.

Blast mats can be seen frequently in Saanich, as parts of the city are rich in rocky outcrops, such as the Maplewood area, above, where blast mats are a regular resident. “These days you don’t worry about (whehter) a property is on top of rock. If you need to blast it, you blast it. The technology is so great now, yes it’s expensive, but you can build.” The general process of blasting is surprisingly minimal, considering the amount of blasting powder piped into the ground. Few, if any neighbours complain, as the blasts are so localized and spread apart. “If it’s residential, close to adjacent properties, we use smaller diameter holes and are not drilling to great depths, usually between four to 10 feet,” Floch said. “So we don’t get too much of what we call ‘powder

factor,’ it’s not too many explosives at once, we connect them through safe blasting.” Drill holes are usually about one to 1.5 inches in diameter on a three foot spacing grid. The process contains the majority of the blast energy, which retains it into the rock. “It’s all to industry standard,” Floch said. “No two holes are going off at the same time so it mitigates the ground vibrations, the (legal) standard is 50 millimeters per second of ground vibration.” And of course, no damages can be construed from blasting on adjacent structures.

“These days you don’t worry about (whehter) a property is on top of rock. If you need to blast it, you blast it. The technology is so great now, yes it’s expensive, but you can build.” - Gerry Koutougos, developer Foundations can be as simple as blasting for the purposes of adding an anchor, such as in seismic upgrades. reporter@saanichnews.com
