Hot mayors’ race on horizon? Four fight to lead New West for the next four years Grant Granger

for School Board

Cold temperatures are forecast for Saturday but the race to become mayor of New Westminster promises to make it hot in the evening. Officially it’s a fourman race. But it could be a photo finish between incumbent Wayne Wright and challenger Jonathan Coté—though independent candidate James Crosty has certainly made an indelible mark on the campaign. It would appear Vladimir Krasnogor has too much ground to make up to be a factor. Wright is seeking his fifth term in the mayor’s chair. Coté and Wright generally have had similar visions for New Westminster during Coté’s three terms (nine years) as a city councillor. The most obvious difference is their age. Coté was just 26 when he was first elected to council in 2005. Wright is 71 and, if elected, would be 75 by the time the new four-year term ends.

OK folks, let’s get out to the polls Saturday is decision day in New Westminster, and there are a lot of decisions to be made. That’s if registered voters for the 2014 civic election make the big decision to go to the ballot box in the first place. Less than a quarter of registered voters did so three years ago with a turnout of 23.45 per cent. That was slightly lower than it was in 2008 when it was 23.86. Voting in municipal elections can be a daunting chore to many. Saturday, November 15th, 2014

But New Westminster is blessed with a lot of people that care about the city. And the candidates have certainly done their best to make the campaign trail lively and interesting. So there’s hope those turnout numbers will rise. Those that do choose to vote will make as many as 14 decisions selecting from a total of 38 candidates, including one candidate www.cartwrightnewwest.com

running for both council and school board. By the numbers, choosing a mayor is easy. Not so when it comes to council and the board of education. Voters only have to vote for one candidate for mayor and they have four to choose from. They include four-term incumbent Wayne Wright, three-term city councillor Jonathan Coté, and independents

James Crosty and Vladimir Krasnogor. City council is a different story. There are 21 candidates for just six seats. It’s a tough task for voters to sort through all of their policies, positions and personalities. It’s slightly less imposing when voting for school trustees. Thirteen candidates are chasing seven positions on the board of education. Voting locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

New Westminster remembers Maybe it was the brilliant sunshine. Maybe it was an added sense of poignancy. Tuesday’s Remembrance Day ceremony brought out the biggest crowd in years to honour Canada’s war dead and surviving veterans at the Cenotaph in front of City Hall. The recent killings of two Canadian soldiers in Ottawa and Quebec meant heightened vigilance at the event by New Westminster police. Officers with binoculars stationed on the roof of City Hall and the neighbouring Royal

Towers scanned the crowd that filled the lawn in front of the monument. Members of the department’s tactical squad patrolled the perimeter of the crowd and two sniffer dogs walked amidst the throng on the lookout for any potential trouble. There was none. Instead there was the doleful drone of a lone bugler playing The Last Post and the melancholy rhyme of In Flanders Fields, this year read by the granddaughter of longtime New Westminster resident Freda Hogg,

who passed away earlier this year at 99 years old. A bitterly cold fall wind snapped flags to attention as dozens of local dignitaries and representatives of community organizations and businesses laid bright green-and-red wreaths and crosses at the base of the Cenotaph. The ceremony concluded with a march past along Royal Avenue, the ranks of veterans, reservists, cadets and first responders led by the Royal Westminster Regiment Band.

Clockwise from top right: Jo-An Cornelius hugs her daughter Asia, 11, as they watch Tuesday’s Remembrance Day ceremonies at New Westminster City Hall; a veteran salutes his fallen comrades; wreaths and crosses festooned with bright red poppies surround the Cenotaph; brilliant sunshine brings some warmth to a cold, blustery day; Marlene Braidwood watches Tuesday’s Remembrance Day ceremonies as she waits to lay a wreath on the Cenotaph; the huge crowd gathers to pay their respects after Tuesday’s ceremonies.

Nothing for granted The forums may be over, but the campaigns are in overdrive as the civic elections conclude the all-important final week. Voters seemed to be interested, judging by turnouts at allcandidates meetings, signs planted on lawns all over town. Hopefully that will result in increased voter turnout on Nov. 15. Remember, you’re now voting in councillors and trustees for four-year terms, a 25-per-cent increase over previous elections. Hopefully voters are beginning to realize how important the so-called third level of government is in our everyday lives. What happens at city hall or the regional district office or the school board office directly affects you and your neighbour. Their decisions will affect your quality of life, the traffic you have to endure getting around town, the parks your kids play in, the education they get at school. They’ll also impact the amount of property taxes you pay, the number of coins you have to plug into parking meters, the fees you’ll pay to access municipal services. We encourage everyone to get as informed as possible about the candidates pursuing these positions: and above all, exercise your right to vote. The NewsLeader has endeavoured to cover as many local election issues as possible. We also ran profiles of all the candidates in recent issues. It’s fitting that we all get to exercise our democratic right just a few days after we paid our respects to those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms that we too often take for granted. We hope everyone wore a poppy and attended Remembrance Day services, Tuesday, to honour our veterans, and that as many as possible follow through and do the right thing on Saturday by exercising the hard-fought right to participate in a democracy. —Black Press

Some thoughts on an election’s eve Happy Election’s Eve. Saturday, all you big-hearted, civic-minded folks will take a few minutes out of your day to trek to city hall, Century House or a local school to cast a vote for mayor, city council and possibly even, school board. If you feel you haven’t got a good sense of the candidates, visit our website (www.newwestnewsleader.com) and click on the civic election tab and you’ll find a good onestop shop. For now, just a few observations from my chair during the run-up to Nov. 15. Courageous folk: If you ever want to restore your faith in humanity, attend an allcandidates meeting. In New West, we had 37 candidates running this election, 21 for council alone. And most came to the all-candidates meetings, despite the fact candidates have a heck of a time making an impact in the brief time they’re allotted to speak. You may not agree with where they stand on the issues, but they’re earnest, hopeful and I’d guess completely altruistic in their desire to contribute to making their city a better place.

Chris Bryan editor@newwestnewsleader.com

Building capacity: Back in January, I wrote a column bemoaning the terrible state of New Westminster School District, and advanced a fourpoint plan for renewal. Happily, much of that has come to pass, in part thanks to the strong, steady leadership of SD40’s new superintendent John Gaiptman. But the school district’s also experienced an increase in parent involvement—particularly, constructive parent involvement, not just using the school PAC to launch a political career. The NWSS school PAC, in particular, had meetings this year that drew big crowds (past attendance was often a handful) where tough, honest questions were asked of school district officials about everything from programs to budget shortfalls. Big credit goes to NWSS

PAC chair Stephen Bruyneel for leading the charge on that one. Also on the parent front, the new group Parents 4 Public Education (P4PE) got started, as a launching ground for parents to seek and endorse candidates for school board. They grilled the candidates in a detailed questionnaire then voted to support a group of five. They are Jonina Campbell, Mark Gifford, MaryAnn Mortensen, Jeremy Perry and Kelly SladeKerr. What impresses me most about this is that the process was transparent and ended up picking candidates with strong skills from a range or political leanings. They include labour-endorsed candidates, a former Voice member (and incumbent) and an independent. “Our only interest is to ensure that we have a functioning school board and a functioning school district,” Thor Borgford, co-chair of P4PE, is quoted as saying. “Nothing else matters.” Notably, long-time trustees— particularly the longest serving, Michael Ewen—aren’t on their list.

As a colleague put it, “He’s got so much baggage he’d fill a 747 cargo hold.” I’m anxious for true renewal—I don’t think any politician should serve more than two decades— but I’ll leave that with you folks. Main attraction: The most exciting race Saturday night could well be between Jonathan Coté and Wayne Wright for the mayor’s job. I have no idea which way this one will go. Wright has the advantage of being an incumbent and being at the helm during a time of great progress in New West’s history. But Coté’s been a highly visible, popular city councillor who has been knocking on thousands of doors this month. Wright has rested firmly on his record, promising more of the same. His strength being his civic boosterism and finesse behind the scenes. For many that’ll be enough. Coté, meanwhile, has outlined a detailed, ambitious policy platform that charts his vision for the future of the city. I, for one, will be nervous Saturday night.

Changing city, changing needs Change is good. When the conditions and context of a situation are such that new and innovative approaches are needed, it is then that change is the right course of action. We believe that these conditions are present and that Jonathan Coté is the change we need for the issues facing the City of New Westminster. In the seven years we’ve lived in New West, we’ve seen it grow at an unprecedented rate from an often forgotten pocket of Metro Vancouver to one of the most desirable neighbourhoods and communities within our region. Initially attracted to the city for what it offered a young childless couple in search of our first home, we now love the community for what it offers not only us, but our children and aging parents. What they need is a measured approach to development and transportation, concrete policies and a vision for the city beyond one final term. Just as the things we love about New West have changed,

so too has what we need from the mayor of our city. The mayor the city needed in the past to attract and encourage businesses and development is not the mayor we need now to manage our complex transportation issues, economic growth and development within the city and region. With the incumbent’s signs dotting vacant and soon to be developed lots across the downtown core, it’s clear what approach Wright likely intends on taking and who might influence that direction. Mayor Wright did well for the city, but now we need a mayor with a vision not only for this generation—but for the future of New Westminster. Neal & Melinda Michael Residents of Downtown

VOTE THOUGHTFULLY Since moving to New Westminster 20 years ago, I’ve voted in every city election as I’ve always seen it as my civic duty. I read the papers, the candidate information pamphlets, and, in later years,

the Internet. I’d narrow my choices then go vote. In one of my first elections I noticed scattered on the ground around the polling station identically Xeroxed lists of names of some candidates. I later learned these lists were the New Westminster and District Labour Council choices. I was extremely angry. I’d put in an effort to honestly pick those I felt should represent us at city hall, and then, here we have residents blindly accepting someone else’s picks. While more participation is needed in civic elections, we also need voters to think critically about who they choose. Remember— many people throughout the world lost their lives trying to create a democracy like ours and we should treat this right with more respect. So if you’re going to let someone else use your voting franchise then maybe you should consider not voting—or join the rest of us and put some real thought into it. Gerald Sommers Sapperton

Wright’s legacy is secure Re: Mayoral column missed the mark (Letters, NewsLeader, Nov. 7) In his letter, Mike Walmsley makes an awful lot of assumptions. He assumes mayoral candidate Jonathan Coté’s master’s degree was paid for by taxpayers. He assumes the Anvil Centre office space stands empty and adds no value to the city. He assumes there is no plan to mitigate traffic through the city. He’s wrong on all counts. Walmsley is dismissive of the ambition and resolve Coté showed, mentioning that the rest of us also worked and studied as a matter of course. Many of us did in our late teens and twenties. Few of us have done so while working two full-time jobs and raising three kids and somehow managing to make it all look easy. To me, the fact that Coté’s family—who are by no means rich—chose to invest in a master’s in urban studies, says a tremendous amount about his commitment to good governance. Coté doesn’t lead on swagger. He actually reads

the information packages from council, and not only that, goes further to educate himself about best practices from other cities. It is an essential antidote to New Westminster’s often insular thinking. City-building is a complex undertaking. I don’t want a mayor who leads on puffery and promises. I want a mayor with a deep understanding of the issues facing our city, who can chart a realistic path forward based on facts, not fairytales. Going ahead with the building of the office tower above Anvil Centre was a calculated risk, but isn’t that what we want from our leaders? A risk-free path leads only to stagnation. Selling the office space offset the cost of the build, and the new owners will be paying property taxes to the city for the privilege. We know there is a demand for office space near SkyTrain, so it won’t be long before those offices are fully occupied, bringing jobs downtown and customers to local businesses. As for a plan to mitigate traffic, well that is a particularly

ironic claim given that Coté chaired the committee that literally wrote the city’s Master Transportation Plan. A plan like that doesn’t come together overnight, but it is now complete. New Westminster has charted a path forward that will mitigate our traffic woes. We can’t wave a magic wand and make the trucks disappear, but step by step we can make our city a safer and less stressful place for pedestrians and residents. I voted for Wayne Wright in the previous two elections, but I said last election I wanted him to finish his legacy projects and then pass the torch. Anvil Centre, Pier Park and the Queensborough Community Centre are complete. Wright’s legacy is secure. Looking forward to the next four years, we need a mayor who is informed, strategic, capable and resolved to make hard choices to preserve quality of life in our city. There is no contest: Jonathan Coté is the best choice for our next mayor. Briana Tomkinson New Westminster

“As first time home buyers, Bryn Ward and her team were phenomenal to work with. Bryn took the time to look at our wants and needs, and educate us on in the in’s and out’s of Real Estate in general, taking us from Real Estate rookies at the start of the experience, to confident home buyers who understand many of the nuances of buying a piece of property. At the start of the experience, we were undecided on a location that would work for what we wanted in our price range, and Bryn showed us everything we could expect in a variety of neighborhoods until we settled on an area we loved. We ended up with a beautiful two bedroom with full den condo in the lovely Victoria Hill neighborhood in New Westminster, an area we didn’t even know about before we met Bryn, and we couldn’t be happier with our home and it’s convenient location. Bryn was wonderful to deal with, she took time to answer all of our questions, taking our calls and replying to us promptly, until we understood everything about the process, making sure we were happy and confident in our decision. Anyone looking to purchase a property that’s a sound investment while getting a fair deal should look no further than Bryn Ward and her team for their Real Estate needs.” Happy Home Owners, Alistair and Jennifer

A Letter From Your Mayor

And, leadership can help affect change. A strong leader has been required in managing the change in New Westminster. Our city is changing. More residents are moving to New Westminster, and along with that more support services and community amenities are required, as well as improved green spaces. I’m proud to have led the development of the Anvil Centre, the Shops at New West and Pier Park. It took leadership to make this happen. It also takes a leader to work with a wide variety of stakeholders. As you can see in the list of my endorsements below, leaders in and outside of New Westminster have valued my collaborative approach. That’s how you get things done. As mayor of New Westminster since 2002, I’m passionate about our city. Before I became your mayor, I was president of the Downtown Business Improvement Association and was named Citizen of the Year in 2000. Since I moved to New Westminster 35 years ago, I’ve been active and working to make this one of the best cities in Canada. I want to continue to provide leadership for this great city. New faces certain on council, school board How many to be determined with labour sweep a possibility Grant Granger

ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

There will be new faces on New Westminster city council and board of education. The question of how many won’t be known until after the civic election polls close Saturday at 8 p.m. Both council and the school board will have at least two new members. Council because current Coun. Jonathan Coté is running for mayor and Coun. Betty McIntosh has “retired” from civic politics, and the board because trustees Lisa Graham and David Phelan decided not to run again. The four remaining council incumbents—Bill Harper, Jaimie McEvoy, Chuck Puchmayr and Lorrie Williams—have been endorsed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council.

The other unanswered question is whether or not that slate can pull off what the Burnaby Citizens Association has done the last two civic elections and sweep city council. In the last election, all of the candidates it endorsed were elected. This year the labour council managed to endorse a full slate of candidates by also backing newcomers Patrick Johnstone and Mary Trentadue. They come with some credentials. Johnstone was named citizen of the year in 2013 for his community involvement and well-read blog about New Westminster issues. Trentadue already knows her way around a city hall, having previously been elected as councillor in North Vancouver before moving to New West. But a sweep is no slam dunk. Far from it. There are some well-known candidates from the community among the 17 others who have also thrown their hat in the ring.

David Brett has been outspoken in his role as president of the Queen’s Park Residents Association. Catherine Cartwright fought for her Sapperton community at city hall. As executive director of Tourism New West, Tej Kainth has been a big booster of the city she grew up in. John Ashdown has been a strong advocate for the West End Business Association. Cal Donnelly has decades of experience on council and on city committees, narrowly losing out in 2008 and 2011. Gavin Palmer, a former Queensborough Residents Association president, is the only candidate from that neighbourhood. His candidacy may be tainted by his run as Hyack Festival Association president in 2013 when controversy erupted over the dismissal of its executive director. Scott McIntosh, Betty’s son, is ready to take the torch from his mother, who was basically the lone non-labour councillor for the last three years.

Extreme weather shelters open up Several Metro Vancouver cities have opened up extreme weather shelters for the homeless this week in response to the arrival of freezing overnight temperatures. Rebecca Bell, coordinator of the Greater Vancouver Shelter Society, said shelters providing extra overnight spaces were opened this week in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, Langley and Maple Ridge.

“It’s earlier than normal,” she said, but added cold weather spaces were opened in the first week of November last year. More than 600 additional spaces can be deployed across the region to meet extra demand during cold weather when local cities issue extreme weather alerts. Extreme weather sites are often set up in churches or community centres using temporary mats and provide

spaces over and above those available in regular homeless shelters. As of Wednesday night, extra spaces being offered across the region included 110 out of a maximum 135 in Surrey, 27 out of a maximum of 57 in Burnaby, 25 out of 45 on the North Shore, and all 30 spaces available in both Langley and New Westminster, 22 in Richmond, 20 in the Tri Cities and 15 in Maple Ridge.

Parents’ group backs candidates ⫸

continued from PAGE A11

Another New West native, 32-year-old cable installer Mike Folka has managed to capture quite a few followers in the city’s Twitterverse. While a sweep is possible on council, it isn’t on the board of education. Although seven will be elected, the labour council has backed just five candidates. They are incumbents Jonina Campbell, Michael Ewen and James Janzen. They are joined on the ‘slate’ by Mark Gifford and Kelly Slade-Kerr. Incumbents MaryAnn Mortensen and Casey Cook are back to battle to be trustees again. They ran for Voice New

Westminster in 2011 but are running together along with James Pepa, who finished last out of 12 candidates in 2011, as an independent group to challenge the labour candidates. The board has been beset by several deficits over the last decade and an inability to get the go ahead from the provincial government to build a replacement for New Westminster secondary. A group calling itself Parents For Public Education New Westminster (P4PE) has thrown its support behind Campbell, Gifford, Slade-Kerr, Mortensen and independent Jeremy Perry. P4PE co-chair Sandra Coll said

there was an appetite for change from its members and that’s why it didn’t support Ewen and Janzen, who have more than half a century of service as board trustees. Then there’s long-retired former Scott Paper employee Jim Bell, who could theoretically be two new faces in one. Bell could be busy in his old age since he’s running for both city council and school trustee. He certainly can’t be criticized for not being persistent. He ran for both positions in 2011 finishing 13th out of 17 for council and 11th in the trustee race.

There have been clear differences to their campaigns. The affable Wright trots out his track record of making COTÉ things happen in New Westminster. He touts his role in helping to bring about the Anvil Centre, Westminster Pier Park, Honour House and Downtown development. And he isn’t shy about saying he knows people in high places—whether it be in the business community or because of his dealings with senior levels of government and participation on Metro Vancouver and TransLink committees. quick to point out he’s a year younger than Wright was when he was first elected. Although Coté and Wright may be the front runners, Crosty could be the one who has made the most mileage out of allcandidates meetings and debates. Without a track record to either boast about or be burdened by, the feisty entrepreneur has attacked with flair and style mixing humour with criticism. And Crosty has been almost as prolific as Coté in his production of platform policies.

He promotes his independence while warning the electorate about Coté’s labour connections and Wright’s long list of contributions from developers. “There’s no machine that’s behind me,” he says. “I see no policy from the current mayor, I see fluffy policy from our council. And they can’t talk about our future without talking about the past.” Crosty says his work helping community groups fight city hall, and his battle against the proposed coal

terminal across the Fraser River in Surrey show leadership. Both Crosty and Krasnogor have criticized the city’s relationships with neighbouring municipalities and senior levels of government and promise to work with them to make things happen. As for Krasnogor, he is a Russian immigrant and electrical engineer who’s lived in New West for 20 years and is a long-time observer of city hall. “I have a good idea of what is going on,”

said Krasnogor. “All of us don’t like the direction the city is going in. I made a decision I can do a better job for this city. “You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much better the city will be in four years.” Whether it’s been at all-candidates meetings or bantering on Twitter, the mayor’s race in 2014 has provided lots of entertainment and stimulating discussion. Forecasting the final outcome, however, is about as reliable as Environment Canada’s weather forecasts.

Police call for charge in scooter death An accident a year ago in which a woman was killed in a collision with a pickup truck while she was riding a motorized scooter has resulted in New Westminster police recommending to Crown counsel a charge be laid. Brenda Moffat, 55, died the

evening of Oct. 30, 2013 after being struck by the truck as it was making a turn onto Ninth Street from Fourth Avenue. Although an ambulance was called she died shortly after the collision. Police said at the time the driver remained behind and did

not believe alcohol was a factor. After an investigation, the NWPD traffic unit is recommending a charge of driving without due care against New Westminster resident David Wilson, 49. He was to appear in court Wednesday (Nov. 12).

Here’s what you do: look at the car. If it looks good, just buy it. Those reports give you lots of details you don’t need. Watching out for you, Walt

I use family in bunny ears since my BFF since childhood, Nikki, and I have been sister-like since grade three. Her family is my family. And vice versa. And as families do, they try to figure out logistics and transportation; who will be going in whose car when it came to outings. A total of nine of us were vacationing together. Luckily, my other sister, Minti lives on the island and had her Honda Odyssey to shuttle some adults, and her three daughters. Good thing. The Escape is roomy, though not that roomy. But when a chronic noise came from the brakes, the minivan was out of commission. Luckily for only a few hours, chaos could have ensued. Being the car person, I accompanied her to a local shop. Not only did her car get fixed very quickly, it gave insight into the local racing scene. Please see Maui driving, a19

Maui driving has its surprises continued from page a18

Yes, there’s one on Maui and it’s probably not what you would have expected. Owner of Kaanapali Car Care, Bill Throckmorton, had his 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 on the hoist. With a small block Chevy inside that produces upwards of 400 horsepower, this vehicle meant business. Dirty business. From March to October, those looking for some wholesome family fun (and maybe some tailgating, whatever you interpret that to be!) are invited to the dirt track to watch him, along with fellow sprint car racers and demolition derby participants. It takes place at the appropriately named “Paradise Speedway Maui.” Here’s the website in case you’re as curious as I am (http://www.paradisespeedwaymaui.com) Regardless, I thanked him for his invite to the end-ofseason event but our schedule was packed to the brim. Lahaina was a quick commute (sometimes) from the Honua Kai resort where all of us gathered. It was a breath of fresh air. Not only because we got off the resort, but it borders along a picturesque coastline. It’s the kind of coastline that postcards are made of: full of palm trees shimmying to the music of the wind. There you encounter scooters buzzing by, happy couples

Five undesirable collector cars whose values have exploded The classic car world is one of the most opinionated collecting pursuits known to man, and nearly everyone seems to have an opinion on relative values and desirability. Each car on the list has at one time or another been deemed by “experts” to be hopeless as a collectible and each has one thing in common—they’ve skyrocketed in value. • 1956-58 Studebaker Golden Hawk: Poor Studebaker, the cars never seemed to get the same love from collectors as the cars of the Big Three. But they may be getting the last laugh. With great looks and some of the best and sportiest interiors of American cars of the era, this past January, a not terribly well optioned car sold at an auction for more than $100,000. Let’s hear it for the underdog. • 1965-69 Corvair convertible: The air-cooled rear-engine Corvair is perhaps the ultimate automotive underdog. In truth, it was a fantastic car, with great looks and even an optional turbocharger. Collectors were fond of saying that Corvairs would always be cheap. How wrong they were. Nice convertibles struggled to break $15,000 less than 10 years ago; they’ve since doubled in value. • 1979-80 BMW M1: The M1 was BMW’s first foray into the mid-engine exotic world. Just over 450 were built. With a little development help early on from Lamborghini and some inspiration from an earlier Paul Braq-designed concept car, BMW produced a credible supercar and the first officially badged M-car that spawned a long line of special Motorsports BMWs. As recently as 2003, an M1 sold for just $49,000 at an auction in the UK. Three years later, they were still going for well under $100,000. This past March, one sold at an auction in Florida for $379,000. • 1976 Porsche 912E: Porsche has always struggled with the entry-level stuff. They know that they should have an entry-level car, but they’ve often either fumbled the execution and/or suffered a backlash from the Porsche snobs. The 912E was a one-year-only stop-gap effort that held down the down-market fort after the end of 914 while the front-engine, water-cooled 924 was readied for the U.S. I personally paid $6,500 for a nice one in 2005. The same car would be worth $20,000 today. • 1955-63 Mercedes-Benz 190SL: The 190SL has lived forever in the shadow of its bigger, sportier and more powerful sibling the 300SL. And while they’re outwardly a bit similar, they’re in a whole different league performancewise. The 190SL used to be dismissed as “a German Thunderbird,” or a car whose looks wrote a check that its performance couldn’t cash. But as 300SLs rose to over $1 million, collectors began to accept the 190SL for what is was—a very well-built and pretty sunny day cruiser. Cars that traded for under $50,000 just a few years ago can now bring a quarter of a million dollars. Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. hand-in-hand and many modes of transportation intermingling. Front Street in Lahaina has a little bit of magic to it, too. In 2011, it was named by the American Planning Association as one of the “Great Streets.” Not every street can be great. They have guidelines. The visit was all too short and then traffic met us on the other end. What happens when you want to escape the drawbacks of paradise driving and you’re stuck in the back seat of a car? Perhaps this is the answer. Envision yourself on a beach, holding a (virgin) piña colada. You’re lying on your towel with your eyes closed, let the crashing waves penetrate your ears. Then picture yourself driving your fastest lap at the Nürburgring. Now that’s paradise. Until the driver behind you honks and you get to crawl forward a metre or so. “You’ll be at the beach soon,” you repeat to yourself. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until December 1, 2014. GVHBA prepares for annual Coats for Kids campaign The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA) is preparing for its 19th-annual Coats for Kids campaign in support of the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, a group whose many initiatives help to provide

distribution to children, teenagers and adults,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “Coats for Kids has become an institution of the association. We already have members calling to sign up,” says de Wit. “Our
