Mike Ruttan takes over as mayor in Port Alberni.

What’s Better than

The final numbers are in, and Mike Ruttan is the new mayor of Port Alberni. His council will be Denis Sauvé, Dan Washington (incumbent), Sharie Minions, Ron Paulson, Jack McLeman (incumbent) and Chris Alemany. There were seven mayoral candidates and 22 council candidates vying for seats this year. “It feels good. My campaign team worked incredibly hard and I’m happy with the way it turned out,” Ruttan said Saturday night after the results were released.

“It’s a strong mandate for me as new mayor. People are definitely looking for a change, but not completely because we do have two returning councillors. But I think it’s a good result; a balanced result.” Ruttan said he is confident the new group will be able to work together, and that having two experienced councillors in Washington and McLeman is positive. “We can work together well as a

There’s going to have to be some work done on where the city’s budget is sitting.” Ruttan won with 1,891 votes, followed by incumbent John Douglas at 1,460, Cindy Solda at 874, Kevin Wright at 776, Hira Chopra 492, Maurice Chopin 414 and Jacques Savard, 80. Denis Sauvé garnered the most results for councillors with 2,748. Washington had 2,366,

The public opinion question, asking if people were in favour of a 10th Avenue crossing, was voted down. Votes were 3,389 against the nonbinding question, and 2,388 in favour. Incumbents returning are John Bennie, Rosemarie Buchanan, Pam Craig, Pat Dahlquist and Larry Ransom. Gaelle Frey was not re-elected. The Sproat Lake Marine Patrol referendum question passed with 3,395 votes in favour of creating a service area for the marine patrol and 2,945 against. y beautiful friend has a stunning antique hourglass on the mantle above her fireplace that I admire whenever I go to her home. She hates it. “I feel like it’s mocking me,” she explained, after I complimented her on it during my last visit. “I already know my time is running out, I don’t need to be constantly reminded.” I was surprised for

a couple of reasons. Firstly that she would have something she didn’t like so prominently displayed where it would catch her eye every day.

And secondly that at the young age of 38, and in excellent health, she’d even have that reaction. “Why don’t you give it away or sell it?”

I asked, more than willing to take the detested piece home with me. “It’s a cherished heirloom and important to Mike,” she said of her husband. “It’s the only thing he has left from his mother’s side of the family.” With that answered, I told her one of the reasons I loved it so much in the hopes she might like it better. “To me it symbolizes change,” I explained. “Once all the sand has trickled down to the bottom and there’s nothing left at the top, I get a charge

out of flipping it over and giving it a fresh start.” She looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. “None of us escapes life alive,” I said, butchering one of my dad’s recent quotes. “And none of us know how much time we have. We might as well enjoy every moment the best we can. And if we sometimes fail, we can try again on the next flip.” I’m not always such a Pollyanna. I’ve been thinking about death and my own mortality lately as well.

noting the museum’s helmets are from both wars. The teacups and ceramic plate fragments “look to be mostly pre-Depression era,” Morton said. “ I see from Jan Peterson’s book Twin Cities: Alberni – Port Alberni…that the Arlington ‘renovated the dining room, lobby and entrance

and added a new ladies’ refreshment parlour’ in early 1938. The discarded china may well date from that renovation.” The museum will document the finds— curator Kirsten Smith went out on the first day to take photographs—but Morton said there is nothing they can do about protecting the

a dining room and saloon. In the back of the hotel there was also a livery stable, which likely explains the abundance of horseshoes. Sherwood said some oldtimers have told him there used to be a swampy area behind the hotel with a boardwalk across it. Morton said he has often seen

historic bottle dumps adjacent to residential buildings, and said a swampy area would be consistent with a dump—there weren’t community dumps a century ago like there are today, he added. “It’s possible this relates to one of the renovations of the Arlington—where surplus stuff was just taken out back and dumped or buried as the building was cleared out for renovation.” The Arlington closed down on May 31, 2011,

When Tim Sherwood used a Bobcat to break through the asphalt behind the Blue Marlin Inn, he wanted to dig a hole for a giant Christmas tree stand. Instead, he unearthed an historical mystery. Sherwood began to see horseshoes, old bottles, even dishware in some of the loads of dirt that were brought up. “There were teapots. The teapot got buried—we weren’t fast enough,” he said. On Nov. 14, Sherwood’s crew dug up an old metal helmet that Alberni Valley Museum manager Jamie Morton said is consistent with a First or Second World War style. “We have four helmets in the collection here—all the same shape,” Morton said. “It looks like the same shape was used by the Canadian military in both wars,” he added,

wasted when I was young, and wishing I’d done things differently.” I had to admit that sometimes I do feel like that and I can get stuck in a negative rut just as much as her or anyone else. Those feelings never serve me well and I consciously try to change my outlook to a more positive one. I also thought about her implication that she was no longer young. Almost 10 years her senior, I’ve always thought of her as a kid. But impressions in regard to age are so relative. To a five-year-old I might seem ancient, and to a 95-yearold I could seem like a baby. It’s how we’re feeling ourselves that makes the real difference. Gazing at an hourglass leaves a further impression on me as well. With the top sand symbolizing the future and the bottom symbolizing

the past, concentrating on the middle part where the sand slowly passes through the narrow opening reminds me to live in the moment as much as I can. It’s amazing how often I forget to do that. Since our conversation my friend says she has a new appreciation for that lovely heirloom on her mantle and she’s now turning it over quite frequently. “I’ve been giving myself a lot of new beginnings lately,” she said. “Psychologically it’s just what I needed.” A positive attitude can’t solve all our problems, but it can help us create happier, more fulfilling lives. It can also give us the energy to accomplish our goals, no matter how much time we have left. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com.

The Collins family has been farming the magnicent riverside acreage of Arrowvale for the past 35 years. SONJA DRINKWATER/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Pieces of china plates, teacups and even a teapot were uncovered during the dig—although Tim Sherwood saw the teapot just before it was buried.

SONJA DRINKWATER/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Tim Sherwood holds up a ceramic teacup that is likely pre-Depression era, according to Alberni Valley Museum manager Jamie Morton.

The Blue Marlin has two full rooms renovated as well as four European-style rooms that share a shower and toilet down the hallway. Two more full rooms will be finished in the spring, Wittal added. Sherwood said there

used to be a house on the lot where the Mag’s 99 sign is located in the parking lot now. “My uncle tore it down and there were newspapers in the wall; one had a headline that said President Lincoln was shot.” The artifacts dug up

from the parking lot are not the first that Sherwood himself has discovered at the Blue Marlin: when he was renovating some of the rooms last year he discovered remnants of newspapers stuffed into the walls for insulation, dating back to the late 1800s.

“If you read the stories without looking at the date, they would apply today,” he said. Do you have a story about the Blue Marlin’s find that you’d like to share? E-mail us. editor@albernivalleynews.com
