COUNCIL SEES five new faces at table this term.

City councillor Bill McKay is the new mayor of Nanaimo. McKay won the mayoral seat Saturday with 30 per cent of the vote, defeating runners up Bill Holdom and Roger McKinnon, unofficial election results show.

He also unseats two-term mayor John Ruttan, who came fourth in the vote count. Joining McKay will be three incumbents, including top vote getter Bill Bestwick, Jim Kipp and Diane Brennan, who eked out a 100-vote win over Fred Pattje. Also at the council table will be Bill Yoachim, Wendy Pratt, Jerry Hong, Ian Thorpe and Gord Fuller. “I’m just absolutely over the moon right now and I have to say, somewhat humbled as well,” said

McKay, shortly after the win. “The fact that this community and thousands and thousands of people would go out and put their confidence in me and the team they’ve assembled

for me, I think that’s absolutely fantastic news.” McKay, a first-term city councillor prior to becoming mayor-elect, won 6,400 votes – surging ahead of second-place finisher Holdom, who had 4,265 votes and McKinnon with 3,381. Ruttan came in fourth with 3,212 votes. McKay said he was stunned his messaging resonated with as many people as it did, and wants to now become the “most a p p ro a c h a b l e m a y o r Nanaimo has ever seen.” See ‘FIVE’ /2

The Nanaimo school district board will see high turnover with seven new trustees elected to sit at the table for the next four years. According to preliminar y election results, Stephanie Higginson, Scott Kimler, Jeff Solomon, Steve Rae, Natasha Bob, Tania Brzovic and Noah Routley were voted in as trustees, joined by incumbents Jamie Brennan and Bill Robinson. The last board approved a 10-year facilities plan, which included the closure of Cedar Community Secondary School, and while Higginson, Kimler and Rae are part of the Save Cedar Schools coalition, Higginson and Rae are not committing to reversing the closure. Higginson, who received the most votes with 9,545, said the coalition has a strong argument that closure and conversion of the school is not in the best interests of the board, but

If they truly are the best decisions for the district, then that’s the way things will stay.

wants to look at all the information. “The whole thing I kept hearing through that whole [school closure] process was, ‘This is the best educational and economic decision for our board,’ but no one would back that up. So what I’m really looking forward to is being on the other side of the curtain and getting access to all the information and finding out why the decisions were made the way they were. “If they truly are the best decisions for the district, then that’s the way things will stay,” said Higginson. Gord Fuller talks to reporters after his first council win Saturday.

Ruttan, who was at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre Saturday as the results came in, said he was disappointed, but wishes McKay every success. “The vote was very much in favour of Bill McKay and ... I think he worked very hard in the campaign, there is no doubt about that,” he said. “I wish him well.” Fifth time was the charm for city watcher Gord Fuller, who will be taking a seat at the council table for the first time. He called his win surreal and said he believes more and more people have recognized he’s the real deal. “I actually walk the walk and I am out there and I’m doing things and have been,” he said. “I think they see that I have been able to make change over the years not being on council and they see that as a reason for me to be on council.” Wendy Pratt, the executive director

evaluation of plan

of Nanaimo Community Hospice Society, said she’s retiring from the organization which has been her heart and soul for 15 years and she sees council as a continuation of service to the community. “I know it’s going to be a big learning curve and I’m just ready to do the work,” she said. “I’ve got the skills, I’ve got the time, I’ve got the commitment, the energy, I’ve got all of that.” According to the City of Nanaimo, this election saw voter turnout reach 34.7 per cent, compared to 26.9 per cent in 2011. Results are still considered preliminary and will be confirmed Wednesday (Nov.19) when the count is finalized. For a full list of the election results, plese visit the city’s website at www. nanaimo.ca. For more on McKay’s priorities as mayor, please see page 3.

“But we also have to make these decisions with the communities that are being affected by them,” said Higginson. Rae said he doesn’t want to cancel the plan but would like to suspend it. There are seven new trustees and the board needs to step back and do a thorough evaluation, he said. “I will say this. If it is the right thing to do, to close that school, I’ll support it but they haven’t proven that to me or any of the other people that I’m aware,” Rae said. “It would be irresponsible of me to say that I want to go in there and re-open that school because I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do. I know how I felt as [part of] Save Cedar Schools but that’s not my role now. My role is what’s best for the whole district,” he said. Sharon Welch, Kim Howland, Nancy Curley, TerryLynn Saunders, Dot Neary and Bill Bard were not re-elected. Results for the 2014 Nanaimo municipal election will become official tomorrow (Nov. 19).

Inbrief Haime reclaims mayor’s seat in Lantzville city scene

McPherson retains seat Alec McPherson has been re-elected to represent Electoral Area A (South Wellington, Cassidy and Cedar) on the Regional District of Nanaimo board. Based on preliminary results, McPherson beat out challenger Rosmy Jean Louis, taking 688 of a total 1,212 votes. Based on last night’s unofficial numbers for Area E (Nanoose), Bob Rogers will replace retiring director George Holme on the regional district board. Rogers received 687 of 1,446 total votes, while rival candidates Ed Mayne and Gordon Wiebe took 359 and 400 votes respectively. Howard Houle, director for Area B (Gabriola and surrounding islands), and Maureen Young, director for Area C (Extension, East Wellington and Pleasant Valley), were acclaimed. Voting numbers for the 2014 civic election will be made official on Wednesday (Nov. 19).

Voter turnout edges upward Voter turnout in Saturday’s municipal election was up more than 7 percentage points from the last election in 2011. In Nanaimo, 34.7 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot, compared to 26.9 per cent three years ago. Voter turnout in Lantzville was up, too, with 49.3 per cent of the electorate casting votes, compared to 44.1 per cent in 2011. SEcoNd look at water deal with Nanaimo a top priority. By Tamara Cunningham THE NEWS BuLLETIN

Lantzville’s former mayor Colin Haime will reclaim the leadership seat, after a decisive win at the polls Saturday. Haime won a three-way fight for the Lantzville mayoralty, earning 46.8 per cent of the vote and unseating one-term mayor Jack de Jong. De Jong and Coun. Joe Bratkowski were evenly split at 372 votes. According to preliminar y results, Haime’s council will include Jennifer Millbank, the highest vote getter with 781 ballots, along with Rod Negrave, John Coulson, Denise Haime (incumbent), David Scott and Graham Savage (incumbent). Haime said it feels good to win and in a discussion with the News Bulletin, talked about his new mandate and council – a team

Haime said he’s OK with a new agreement if safeguards from the original agreement remain, but that the issue will be put on the back burner for now. De Jong, who had sought a second-term, said losing is always a bit of a disappointment, but acknowledges they went into the campaign with baggage, not the least of which was the water deal. “Colin ran a very good campaign and certainly one of the issues was the water negotiation and the rapidity that we processed that,” de Jong said. The voter turnout at Lantzville’s election was 49.3 per cent compared to 44.1 per cent in 2011 and 21.6 per cent in 2008. Voters also answered a referendum question on the size of council with 58.8 per cent in favour to reduce representation from a mayor and six councillors to a mayor and four. McKay sets priorities for upcoming term as Nanaimo mayor By Tamara Cunningham THE NEWS BuLLETIN

New city committees, an investigation into the Leadercast event and a decision on the Colliery dams are actions proposed by mayor-elect Bill McKay as he prepares to take on Nanaimo’s top job. McKay, a first-term city councillor, won the leadership race Saturday, defeating Bill Holdom for the title by more than 2,000 ballots and with 30 per cent of the vote. He also unseats two-term mayor John Ruttan. In a post-election interview, McKay talked about the win and his new council, the tasks ahead of them and his spending over the last term, which remains the highest on council. The victory was surreal Saturday night, according to McKay, who says the “three amigos” – himself, Bill Bestwick and Jim Kipp – are sitting in the centre three seats after being significantly marginalized for the last three years. “At one o’clock in the morning Val and I were sitting out ... on the

back porch having a drink with each other and it seemed a little bit strange then. It did. A wee bit surreal. Now ... I’ve got to get some ideas together, I got to get my council together, we got to get going. We got a lot of work to do.” When it comes to his new council, McKay believes voters made the right choice. Bill Yoachim, a former Snuneymuxw councillor and the second highest vote-getter, for example, will open “a whole new set of doors,” McKay said. “When I watch municipalities in other areas, in other jurisdictions, that are having real struggles trying to get along with their First Nations people ... wow – imagine the opportunities we’ve got now.” When McKay steps into the leadership position this December, he says his first task will be restructuring city committees. He wants to see eight committees based on a model used in the City of Langford that he says makes sense, and would cover areas of the city like public works, protective services and labour management. City councillors would fill chair and vice-chair positions and

he’d be looking for their buy in. There will also be a budget process to work through, he said, and he’d like to see a decision made on the Colliery dams by the end of February. McKay also wants a program and services review and third-party probe into the cancellation of a live leadership simulcast scheduled at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. City council had opted against launching an inquir y into the issue, instead releasing a redacted version of a report on the sequence of events leading up to the cancelled event but McKay said it’s incomplete and lacks recommendations. “I don’t ever want us to find ourselves in that situation again. Ever,” he said. The new mayor is coming out of a one-term as city councillor where he was a top spender. A 2013 Statement of Financial Information showed McKay had $14,972 in expenses that year and $22,509 since 2011 compared to Ruttan, who spent a total of $22,499. Between January and September this year, McKay’s expenses tallied an additional

great buys catalogue 2015

now available!

$8,859. The number is 14 per cent higher than the expenses of the city’s current mayor. Earlier this year, McKay said the majority of his expenses were tied to conferences, explaining that he was eager to learn and study best examples from other communities and he got information, experiences and knowledge “from every single one of them.” This year’s numbers show all but $461 was spent on conferences and events. “I think you are dealing with the trivial to be quite honest with you ... we have a $190 million budget and you are worrying about whether I spent $8,000 or $4,000, really?” He suggests a personal development budget if other new council members want to attend conferences, and said people will probably not see the same level of conference attendance from him this term. He might, however, take people back to communities like Saskatoon to look at best practices. The new council and mayor will be sworn in, Dec. 1. news@nanaimobulletin.com NP055-728

Pennies might be becoming a thing of the past but the goal of the News Bulletin’s annual coin campaign remains the same: make sure no child goes empty handed on Christmas morning. The annual Coins for Kids fundraising campaign kicks off today (Nov. 18). Until Dec. 16, we’ll collect donations of coins at our office at 777 Poplar St., which we’ll then count, deposit and distribute to two charities in Nanaimo that support children: the Great

Nanaimo Toy Drive and the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club. The money goes to the toy drive to help purchase toys for kids, from newborn to age 16. For more on the toy drive, please see page 7. The boys and girls club uses the money to buy toys and provide a Christmas hamper to their families in need. The campaign, which began in 1996 as Pennies for Presents, has raised more than $160,000 for children at Christmas. All money donated stays in Nanaimo and helps local children.

With the federal government phasing out the penny, the campaign has been renamed Coins for Kids to more accurately reflect the donations collected. Schools and businesses are traditionally big supporters of the campaign, often challenging others in a race to raise money. But anyone can participate – just drop off your money at the News Bulletin or one of the community drop off locations that will be announced in the coming weeks. The money doesn’t have to be rolled – we’ll take care of that, too. We’ll also bring stories of groups fundraising for Coins for Kids, as well as the volunteers who help make it happen. Nanaimo-based medical cannabis producer Tilray has partnered with the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Canada’s first clinical trial to test the effectiveness of marijuana in treating post-traumatic stress disorder. The study, still waiting for approval from Health Canada, will be one of the world’s first largescale clinical trials to evaluate cannabis for treating a mental health disorder. Existing studies of marijuana’s effect on PTSD have produced anecdotal and observational data, but no information is available from sciencebased clinical trials. The goal of the foundation is to raise $17,700, the cost of a cystoscope, and Adams said Brovember participants are doing well. A police search of a home connected to an alleged attempted abduction turned up a large quantity of heroin, crystal methamphetamine, crack cocaine and powdered cocaine. Nanaimo Mounties searched the townhouse, located on the 1400 block of Jingle Pot Road, wednesday at about 3:30 p.m. where they found the drugs, worth about $100,000, plus more than $14,000 in Canadian cash. the investigation was sparked Nov. 11 when several suspects wearing masks tried to force two men into a van in downtown Nanaimo. Police arrested four suspects allegedly connected to the attempted abduction. One woman, 25, and a man, 31, were among those arrested in connection with the attempted abduction and now face charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Both suspects will make their first appearance in Nanaimo provincial court in January. More charges could result from the seizure of drugs and the investigation, including the abduction attempt, is continuing. No charges have been laid in that matter.

New council brings change After the votes settled in Saturday’s municipal election, only three veterans remain on Nanaimo city council, led by a new mayor with just one term as a councillor under his belt prior to winning the city’s top job. With five new faces, it will be a bit of a learning curve for the first few months at Nanaimo City Hall. If candidates thought the election process was overwhelming, they’re about to find out the real work is just beginning. The previous council has left its predecessors some major decisions on the Colliery dams – issues that likely factored into Saturday’s results and drove the voter turnout up more than six percentage points over 2011. People were motivated to vote this year, and while many new councillors owe their success to that, they must also be mindful that those same people are engaged and will be watching to see that their votes paid off. Balancing public support with what’s best for the city as a whole is one of the enduring challenges of civic leadership. Nanaimo stands at the edge of major change during the next four years. Council will guide decisions on downtown development, with two high-rise hotels set for construction in the next year, a foot ferry linking downtown Nanaimo to downtown Vancouver still in development, plus upgrades to water and sewer infrastructure among the big picture projects that will post challenges to the city’s resources. Citizens of Nanaimo have entrusted these nine individuals with the keys to the city in the hopes that they can make the best decisions possible for everyone involved. The province of B.C. has given municipal leaders an extra year on their terms, from three years to four. Let’s hope they use that year wisely.

The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

‘It’s a team, it’s a family and we’re going to bring that unity back.’

Democracy rallies and rockthe-vote programs, these are worthwhile initiatives; they can make a difference and I hope they do. Media coverage can influence voter turnout too, I think, and while we in the newsroom were fascinated by the election and intended for our enthusiasm to come across on these pages, we can always do better. Low voter turnout is a problem, one we should always try to address, but perhaps it’s also a fact of life. After this past Saturday’s election, our mayor and council and school trustees should feel as though they have a mandate, because they do. They still received thousands of votes apiece, and they earned those votes, seats and support. Now that another election is behind us, let’s forgive those who didn’t make it out to the polls. Nanaimo has a lot of beautiful days, and sometimes on those kinds of days, we aren’t inclined to think that the world needs to change. Of course, it does need to change, and it will, and our votes will have some small part to play. Voter turnout will ebb and flow and it will never meet our expectations, and it should never meet our standards.

Ferry ideas floated To the Editor,

Re: Ferry scheme unacceptable, Editorial, Nov. 6. I think it is disgraceful that B.C. Ferries is thinking about closing the Departure Bay-toHorseshoe Bay ferry route. There are no public transit buses that go out to Duke Point ferry terminal and there are no transit buses at Tsawwassen ferry terminal to get anywhere. I would be stranded if I went to the Tsawwassen terminal and I can’t afford to pay for a taxi to get where I need to go as I’m a low-income person on a disability. I think B.C. Ferries supervisors, including the chief executive

officer, need to get a cut in pay. Then they wouldn’t need to raise the prices to go on the ferries. I think B.C. Ferries needs an audit to see how it spends its money. People are sick and tired of paying high prices to go on the ferry. B.C. Ferries needs to cut the prices to go on the ferries then they would have more ridership. B.C. Ferries is holding us ransom because we are on an island. They should be ashamed of themselves for thinking they can get away with this. This is an outrage.

Donna Nordstrom Nanaimo

To the Editor,

Re: Views differ on next steps for dams, Nov. 11. Anyone not familiar with the extensive history of the Colliery dams matter might have considered council’s resolution this month to undertake studies regarding dam dimensions and floodwater flows to be a logical startIng point. However this is nowhere close to the start of this process. It has gone on for over two years and cost ratepayers over $2 million. There have been numerous professional expert consultants, city staffers, public atlarge experts and provincial dam experts involved, all apparently doing their jobs. But after all this there is no final decision on what to do about the dams. Obviously, a relatively small municipality is not equipped to deal with this kind of issue. From

Re: Ferry follies prevent much-needed dialogue, Opinion, Nov. 11. Horseshoe Bay cannot close because Bowen Island and the Sunshine Coast need it. Departure Bay could close and that route could be Duke Point-Horseshoe Bay. Maybe one to three sailings early day and the same in evenings. Both terminals had major upgrades in the last 20 years. Less sailings to Horseshoe Bay, less upgrades needed. Any new ferries should be built like the double-enders, prior to fast ferries.

I am tired of hearing all the bad news about mining in B.C. from naysayers, NIMBYs and alarmists – it’s time for the truth to get out. Mines operating today conduct continuous, or progressive, reclama-

the outset there was no clear public vision of whether to renaturalize the river or retain the lakes. There was no clear direction to experts to find the lowest-cost solution looking at all possibilities and there was no consistent mandate from provincial regulators regarding appropriate safety requirements. Under the Provincial Water Act, the province owns all of the lakes, rivers and streams in B.C. There would be no chance today of a B.C. city damming a river to create lakes solely for recreation. Nanaimo inherited these dams from the coal industry and thus now has responsibility for dam safety and associated costs. Perhaps it makes more sense to upload this responsibility to the province.

Production company celebrates with tradition Schmooze Productions celebrates 15 seasons with Fiddler on the Roof BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

Over the years, Schmooze Productions has become known in the Harbour City for staging more risqué productions than a typical theatre company. So to celebrate their 15th season in Nanaimo, Schmooze Productions decided to go in a different direction by producing the Broadway classic, Fiddler on the Roof. “One of things that I like to do is offer something to different audiences,” said Schmooze Productions co-founder and artistic director Dean Chadwick. “This is something for everybody.” Fiddler on the Roof, which opened on Nov. 13, runs until Nov. 29 at the Harbour City Theatre. “It’s really relatable to everybody,” Chadwick said. “There is some character in the show that everybody will relate to, feel for and recognize in themselves.” Fiddler on the Roof is based on a series of stories written in Yiddish between 1894 and 1914 called Tevye and his Daughters by Sholem Aleichem. Fiddler on the Roof opened Broadway in 1964 and would go on to win numerous Tony Awards and experience four Broadway revivals, with the most recent occurring in 2004. “It’s about tradition,” Chadwick said about Fiddler on the Roof. “It’s about family relationships and it is about how you are trying to keep your traditions alive and intact while the world is changing around and while your kids are growing up and the family choices that come from that.” The musical is set in Russia during the early 1900s and is centred around a dairyman named Tevye, who is forced to balance his beliefs and traditions while trying to find suitable husbands for his more modern daughters. “He is the ultimate papa,” Chadwick said about Tevye. “He is the papa figure in the show and it his family and his traditions that are being challenged

Artist reflects on her time in the Harbour City I

MARY ANN FLEMING celebrates 30 years on Vancouver island with month-long art show. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

For roughly three decades Mary Ann Fleming has been expressing herself artistically through watercolours, oil and acrylic paintings. “My art is my life,” Fleming said. “Whatever intrigues me, whatever I am involved in, usually comes out in my artwork.” During that time the self-taught Nanaimo-based artist has held dozens of shows and created plenty of art. This month Fleming will be showcasing her work at the Art 10 Gallery, as part of their monthly-

featured artist exhibitions. Fleming’s exhibit, which is called My Retro Show, is a reflection of her time here in Nanaimo and includes a piece from each of the 12 shows that she has had since moving to Vancouver Island in 1984. “I know people always like to follow a progression of how an artist progresses over the years and how they change and move and what their interests are,” Fleming said. “So that’s what I did. There is once piece from each show and you can follow the order that

I have done them in.” Fleming was raised in Timmins, Ont., and had been interested in art ever since she was a young girl. At the age four, Fleming, who was an avid drawer, was given a set of oil paints from her grandmother. “It was a Christmas gift,” Fleming said. “She gave me this tiny little kit and I was just away. That was it. All my drawings became paintings.” Following high school, Fleming spent time working in the newspaper industry in Ontario. “I was involved in newspapers,” she said. “For five years I did an editorial cartoon for the Cochrane Times.” In the mid-1980s Fleming and her husband retired and moved to Nanaimo, where she began to paint more frequently. “I am self-taught because I do it from

books,” she said. Shortly after her arrival to the Harbour City, Fleming discovered that there were plenty of other like-minded artists in the area. Fleming predominately works with watercolours, oil and acrylic and has also dipped into creating handmade jewelry. When Fleming looks back at her time as an artist on Vancouver Island, she is grateful for all the creative people she has met. “I would say meeting a few other very successful artists over the years,” Fleming said about her time on the Island. “The creative energy on the Island is just so strong.” My Retro Show runs until the end of the month at the Art 10 Gallery inside the Nanaimo North Town Centre. Santa Claus parade lights up downtown Craft workshops, trolley return for holiday season

The Christmas season downtown brings more than a month of free, family-oriented activities intended to lighten hearts and brighten the short days of winter. The holiday festivities will kick off Thursday (Nov. 20) as downtown merchants host their first holiday late-night shopping event, featuring goodies and give aways. Many downtown businesses will be open until 8 p.m. or later. Family activities begin Nov. 29 when Santa returns to downtown Nanaimo via Harbour Air seaplane at 1:30 p.m. From there, children can escort Santa to the grand opening of his workshop at 101 Gordon St. in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. Santa’s Workshop will be a beehive of activity between 2:30-4:30 p.m. and families can enjoy free hot chocolate, cookies and entertainment with Andrew Crosby. Head down to Diana Krall

The annual Lion’s Club Santa Claus Parade will begin at 5 p.m. Enjoy brightly lit floats, marching bands and, of course, Santa Claus. On Dec. 6 the Wellington Jazz Club plays, followed by Island Bel Canto Singers on Dec. 13 and A Cappella Plus Choir on Dec. 20. New this year will be a senior’s tea on Dec. 20 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Santa’s Workshop. A ride on the Downtown Christmas Trolley is fast becoming a tradition in Nanaimo. You can hop on and off the trolley at 100 Museum Way or on Wesley Street in the Old City Quarter. Rides by donation happen Dec. 6, 13 and 20 from noon to 4 p.m. Cool as Ice will create ice sculptures in Diana Krall Plaza on Dec. 13, starting at 10 a.m. Or perhaps stroll the streets and enjoy the decorated Christmas windows and vote for your favourite in the second annual Downtown Window Decorating Contest. You could win $500 in gift cards just for casting your ballot at participating stores. For a more complete list of holiday activities, please visit www.dnbia.ca.

Charities fill need at Christmas

I

fROM TOyS to collecting food, local charities help out.

At this time of year, it really is better to give than receive. While the stores are stocked with Christmas goodies, it’s important to remember that not everyone is having a happy holiday. To spread Christmas cheer to those who need it most, charities throughout Nanaimo raise money to buy toys for children and food for families in need. When buying for friends and family, consider donating to these worthwhile causes as well.

Great NaNaimo toy Drive For the past 32 years,

the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive has collected new, unwrapped toys, stuffed animals and books for children at Christmas. Last year, the toy drive helped 1,600 children from 800 families in Nanaimo. Toy donations and gifts of cash are appreciated, but there is a special need for donations for older children, age 12-16. Donations can be dropped off at any of the major malls

in Nanaimo, Save-On-Foods locations and the city’s firehalls. Registration for the toy drive takes place at Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank until Nov. 22. From Nov. 25-29, registration takes place at University Village in Harewood. Children’s care cards and proof of address are required. For more information, please visit www.thegreatnanaimotoydrive.ca. operatioN reD Nose Each year, volunteers donate their time to make sure everyone gets home safely. The organization aims to stop people from drinking and driving during the holiday season. Anyone who’s had too much too drink, or simply doesn’t want to drive, can call the service, which will dispatch a pair of drivers to drive your car and you home safely. The service is free but donations are accepted and will go toward PacificSport. For more information, please call 250-755-6969. salvatioN army The Christian charitable organization provides shelter and hot meals to people in need all year round. To do this, the Salvation

Army fundraises through its kettle program at Christmas. Volunteers are needed to man the kettles from midNovember until Christmas Eve. Individuals are welcome, but businesses can also sponsor a kettle – the News Bulletin staff will be ringing the bells in Terminal Park Dec. 4. The Salvation Army, in partnership with Loaves and Fishes community food bank, also operates Hamperville, where donations of food are sorted into Christmas hampers for people who need them. For more information or to volunteer, please call 250740-1004. CoiNs for KiDs The News Bulletin’s annual fundraising drive collects donations from readers and divides it between two charities – the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive and the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club. The annual drive, which raises about $8,000-$10,000 annually, is successful for its simplicity – just gather up your spare change and drop it off at the News Bulletin office at 777 Poplar St. We do the rest. For more information, please call 250-753-3707.

After back surgery, some people experience complete and long-lasting relief of their symptoms, DR. KAREN MATTERN but many enjoy only partial relief of pain or little change at all Many people believe that following back surgery there is nothing that a chiropractor can do for them, or that chiropractic treatment could be harmful. Nothing is farther from the truth. In a study published in the Canadian Family Physician, 25% of the patients in the study had undergone back surgery with little or no relief. After treatment with a two to three week regimen of daily adjustments by an experienced chiropractor, 36 to 87% of the patients in the study returned to full function with no restriction on activities. Even more to the point, none were made worse. If you have already had back surgery, it would be advisable to see a chiropractor, who is qualified to evaluate your individual situation and recommend the best course of action for you to take. You may be able to avoid future episodes of pain and disability. For more information call our office at 250-758-7022 or visit our website at http://drkarinmattern.shawwebspace.ca/

Between the time that you file for bankruptcy GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP and are discharged, there is a “stay of proceedings” in place under which creditors may not continue any legal collection proceedings. As long as you comply with all of your duties and receive your discharge from bankruptcy, most creditor claims will be legally extinguished such that they can no longer pursue collection from you. However, your discharge from bankruptcy will not relieve you of the following debts: • Court ordered fines or penalties; • Court ordered damages for intentionally inflicted bodily harm; • Court ordered support or maintenance; • Debts arising out of fraud or misappropriation; and, • Student loan debts incurred within seven years preceding the date of bankruptcy. As such, you will continue to have to deal with these creditors claims either during the bankruptcy or immediately following your discharge.

I want to install a hot tub. What should I do? Before installing a major appliance like a hot tub you BEN MAZZEI need to determine if your electric service will handle the extra load. Hot tubs can draw anywhere from 20 to 60 amps, a qualified electrician can calculate the required wire and service size for your installation. You will also need to confirm if your panel has sufficient space. The majority of hot tubs require either two or four spots in your electrical panel. They also require GFCI protection and a disconnect at least five feet away and within line of site for safety.

Hypnotherapy Can Hypnotherapy help with Test Anxiety?

Does this sound familiar? From the moment that the instructor says begin, I look at the exam TRACY L. THOMPSON sheet in front of me my whole mind goes blank, my hands become cold and clammy and I sit there frozen unable to recall anything from all the hours of studying I’ve previously done! Excessive stress and extreme pressure on you to succeed can interfere with focus, memory and concentration. Often times it has been found that the reasons for poor test scores and failed exams are really because of negative thinking, fears, and self-limiting beliefs. By using hypnosis however, it teaches you how to relax while taking an exam and studying and when you relax, your mind becomes more absorbent and able to learn. Hypnosis can also help you to concentrate and focus more, improve your memory, and build up your confidence while taking exams. You will find that by using hypnosis it will help you to tune out all distractions so that you can zone in and really concentrate on your studies easily and effortlessly.

I heard that there were changes to the Wills and Estates legislation TIAH M. WORKMAN this Spring. Do existing Wills needs to be re-written? Not unless you have changes to your existing Will you would like to make. The new Wills, Estates and Succession Act does not invalidate any Wills that were written before it came into effect, although the Act affects all Wills, no matter when they were written. If you already have a Will, you may wish to review it with your Notary Public or lawyer to ensure that your wishes are upheld. Notary Public

My backyard looks like a lake as soon as it rains. When its not raining, my yard feels spongy, and I can see moisture in my crawl space. Is there a way to fix this?

Absolutely. There are a number of different drainage options that can eliminate the accumulation of water in your yard and ensure your crawl space remains dry. A simple ditch to direct the flow of water away from the troubled spot may be the solution in some yards. In others, the installation of buried drain pipe bedded in drain rock will catch the accumulation of water and discharge it safely away before it causes damage. These systems require proper design to avoid causing drainage problems in another area of your yard. Additional waterproofing of your house foundation can be accomplished by sealing the exterior concrete with a waterproofing membrane, along with upgrading your house perimeter drains which are designed to keep the foundation dry. A properly drained yard and foundation will provide you with the assurance of staying dry. Now is the time to tackle these repairs as the rainy season is just around the corner. VI OUTDOOR offers complimentary drainage assessments and solutions for your home, yard, and business.

raw foods How do I incorporate raw fall veggies into a meal? There’s something so gratifying about pulling veggies out from under the dirt in harvest season. The shapes and colours and sizes are always a terrific surprise. I love how the sweet taste of squash, yams and other root veggies remind me of TONI JEFFRIES hearty meals around the table with family in autumn. Loaded with rich color and plenty of nutrients, these vegetables make the perfect side dish for any fall dinner. Whether you’re unearthing them in your own garden or picking them up in the produce aisle, these root veggies are among the season’s freshest, healthiest picks. Here are some ways to eat them (and why your body will love them)! Beets – Grate this naturally sweet powerfood, toss it with a bit of olive oil and lemon juice then top a salad with it for a boost of folate and manganese, or juice with fresh apple and lemon. Beets are an excellent antioxidant. Yams – Pop some chopped yams into the food processor then add water, coconut butter, spices and some sweetener to make the filling for raw yam pie. Yams are a great source of energy, fiber and B-complex vitamins, which help with metabolism. Carrots – Dip carrot sticks in almond butter or homemade hummus for an easy on-the-go snack. Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene, promoting good eyesight, healthy skin and resistance to infection. Squash – For a delicious raw soup, blend squash with coconut water, celery, cashews and spices. This veggie is a high-fiber heart-friendly choice. It has lots of potassium for bone health and B6 for a strong immune system and nervous system. Beet lovers: Stop in at Power House Raw Food & Juice Bar and try our Recovery Smoothie with beets, kale, blueberries, pineapple, orange, apple, acai, and flax.

Dancy, Christine Lynch, Molly Mitchell, Olivia Hill and Paul found donors in the community willing to donate four bikes. “One of our team members (Christine Lynch) works at Oak Bay Bicycle shop in Nanaimo, and is an expert in bike repair,” adds Paul. “Thanks to her connections, the shop generously donated tools and space to carry out the repairs, and more than $400 in materials including tire tubes, brakes, peddles, handles, brake lines and a new tire. Christine taught us how to repair the bikes.” Operation Generation is currently seeking support from adult volunteers. To volunteer for the program, please contact Walker at info@hubcitycycles.ca.

If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIM WAIT can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. How can you tell if the CMA you’ve been given is worth more than the piece of paper it’s written on? Call me at 713-1223 or email tim@timwait.com and I will let you know.

As you know, the human body is in a constant state of change, and the mouth is no exception. Although dentures are durable, they are not any more permanent than eyeglasses. Over time, the underlying tissues of the mouth change, often causing the denture to settle out of position. This can cause a change in the fit and occlusion, as well as in your appearance. As the gums shrink, upper dentures tend to go up out of sight & move back, while lower dentures tend to settle down and come forward. Thus, some people who wear the same dentures over many years develop a “bull dog” look. As a general rule, dentures should be replaced every 5-7 years and relined every 2-3 years, in order to prevent deterioration of the tissues and bone and to maintain a healthy, natural smile. An annual professional consultation is very important and is provided at our Clinic at no charge.

How does granite compare to other countertop choices? Granite is the most durable countertop available. It will retain its beauty and hold its value longer than any other countertop. Granite will keep its high gloss finish forever. Although pricing is on the higher end of the market, the durability of granite makes it a more cost effective option.

DEATHS

October 15, 1922 - November 10, 2014

Patricia passed away on November 10, 2014. An outdoor service will be held Friday, November 21 at 1 p.m. Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens

DENNIS LUM TILLAPAUGH, Lyle Melvin July 5, 1927 – October 31, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce Lyle’s passing on October 31, 2014. Lyle will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Jean, their five children, Sandy (Jim) Robertson, Don (Inger), Bruce (Elizabeth), Brian and Rick (Colleen), 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and many other wonderful friends and family. Lyle was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Edna, his brother, Alden, his sister, Norah and his daughter in law, Valerie Funk. Lyle was born on a farm at Hamlin, Alberta, where the family lived until moving to Armstrong, BC in 1941. He graduated from high school in 1945 and in 1947 Lyle joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served proudly for 30 years. On his first night “ashoreâ€? in Victoria he met Jean Corner at a dance. She became the love of his life and they were married in 1949. After the navy, Lyle was employed by the Nanaimo School Board, retiring in 1987. Lyle was inspirational to all who knew him, especially his family with whom he held a special bond and they will all miss him dearly. He had a quick wit and impish sense of humour. Lyle was an avid outdoorsman and passed on his love of camping and fishing to all his kids and grandchildren. He also showed no mercy when playing cards! A celebration of Lyle’s life will be held November 22 from 1:00-3:00 pm in Lantzville at the Royal Canadian Legion Seaview Centennial Branch 257 (7227 Lantzville Road). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Lyle’s memory.

for many families at Christmas!

At Christmas time each year the community newspapers of Black Press organize and promote the PENNIES FOR PRESENTS CAMPAIGN, which raises money for charity. For the last 18 years the PENNIES FOR PRESENTS campaign has raised more than $160,000 (in Nanaimo alone!) in pennies, nickels, dimes and other change for various local community charities. Frank Legh was the founder and driving force behind the Pennies for Presents, and in honour of Frank’s memory we will be continuing this campaign, now called Coins for Kids. Hoops Mariners pass Quest test I

VIU MEN’S team wins by 84-77 score.

This is helping us, these close games.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The VIU Mariners won a battle of unbeaten teams, and did it undermanned, but they know they can still be better. Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team defeated the Quest Kermodes 84-77 on Friday night at the VIU gym. “We’re still trying to get to the point where we can put together a consistent 40-minute effort,” said Matt Kuzminski, coach of the Mariners. “We have not had that all season.” Friday’s game turned into something of a gut check early as VIU’s top scorer, Justin King, was injured in the first quarter and did not return. “We have a lot of good players on the team, so when something like that happens, guys are ready to step up,” said the coach. The M’s led by 13 points at the half, but the Kermodes chipped away and closed the deficit to two points midway through the fourth quarter. “Coaches were just telling us to keep executing, executing, don’t get our heads out of the game, stay in the game, don’t

get complacent,” said Kadeem Stewart, VIU guard. The M’s stuck to their game, stayed calm and hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

“This is helping us, these close games,” Stewart said. “As we get further into the season, I know we’re going to play better teams, there’s going to be more competition. So this is helping

us in the long run.” Still, the coach said the Mariners won’t feel like they win until they play complete basketball. “We’re slowly getting better at offensive execution. Tonight, I

don’t think that was our issue,” Kuzminski said. “It was more effort and focus on defence … It’s an issue that could be a really big problem if we don’t get better at it.” Stewart led the team with 20 points and six rebounds. Chris Parker scored 15 points and Jason Fortin scored 13. Earlier that night, VIU’s women’s basketball team was defeated by Quest, 64-51. Sienna Pollard scored 24 points and Emily Clarke added seven. The following afternoon the Capilano Blues visited the VIU gym. The M’s women won 58-37 as Jenna Carver pulled down a re m a r k a b l e 2 5 rebounds. The M’s men were also winners in a 91-62 blowout. GAME ON … The Mariners men’s and women’s basketball teams are on the road this Friday (Nov. 21) and Saturday to play the Columbia Bible College Bearcats and the Kwantlen Eagles, respectively. Nanaimo Clippers forward Sheldon Rempal wins a puck battle along the boards during Friday’s game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at Frank Crane Arena.

Clippers beat rival Bulldogs The Nanaimo Clippers were too much for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs to handle. The Clips defeated the Dogs 5-2 on Friday night at Frank Crane Arena. The game was a rematch of the previous Friday, in which Nanaimo needed overtime to edge its Island rivals. This week the Clippers came out skating, were undeterred by a 1-0 first-period deficit, and scored four times in the second period to build a lead. Cole Maier had a goal and an assist and other Nanaimo scorers were Anthony Rinaldi, Nick Gushue, Brett Roulston and Sheldon Rempal. Guillaume Decelles made 41 saves for the win as shots ended up 50-43. Two days later, the Clippers defeated the Chilliwack Chiefs at Frank Crane Arena by a score of 10-2. The Clips had a total of 32 shots on goal and went 4-for-6 on the power play. Anthony Rinaldi scored two goals, while Nicolas Carrier had a fivepoint night with a goal and four assists. GAME ON … The Clippers host the Victoria Grizzlies on Wednesday (Nov. 19) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena.

Inbrief Raiders will refresh by going retro I rowing

Nanaimo rower golden at trials

Nanaimo’s Martin Barakso rowed to gold at the right time. Barakso and his pairs partner Tim Schrijver won their division at the national trials at Elk Lake in Victoria on Nov. 9. Barakso, 20, and Schrijver, 22, prevailed over more experienced senior team members to finish first. The results will factor into assessments leading up to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Gorge races test athletes Nanaimo Rowing Club members beat the clock to post strong results at the Head and Tail of the Gorge races in Victoria last month. Junior, senior and masters rowers completed a fourkilometre course that included tidal rapids, rocks and reefs in windy, rainy weather. The best local result was a fifth-place finish by the senior men’s doubles team of Liam Cooper and Marshall Ewen-Holdom.

HADI ABASSI, back on the board, says club has winning template. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEwS BuLLETiN

The V.I. Raiders think they can get back on top, because they’ve been there and they know what it takes. The Vancouver Island Raiders junior football club has its new board in place and is looking forward to what will be another season of change, after firing head coach Brian Ridgeway last month. Back as a board member is Hadi Abassi, who was suspended from Canadian Junior Football League sidelines all last season after an unpopular rant at the previous year’s Canadian Bowl national championship. Abassi argues with Ridgeway’s contention of negativity within the franchise, saying the Raiders’ winning tradition was as positive a story as could be written. Abassi and Ridgeway were at odds for most of the coach’s one-year tenure.

“I did not agree with some of the decisions he made, but that wasn’t the primary factor [in his firing],” Abassi said. “Nobody more than me wanted to have this relationship work with Brian here as our head coach, but as a franchise, as a team, we all decided, no, it was good for the team to take a different direction.” That direction could have a retro feel. “We have a winning formula that we had for nine years as a franchise, so why would we want to change that winning formula?” he asked. “We’re going to do whatever we did in the past under coach [Matthew Blokker]’s direction and we should learn from him and move in that direction.” Abassi said no fan is satisfied with losing, and he wasn’t, but he said he was “very happy” with the coaching staff’s on-field results. However, the franchise’s longterm vision, Abassi said, requires greater stability. The Raiders hope they will have that with a new coach. The club received immediate interest in its coaching vacancy and could be close to an announcement. The new candidate might find

Bulldogs win way into quarterfinals The John Barsby Bulldogs opened defence of their AA varsity football crown, hammering the Prince George Polars 41-0 Saturday afternoon. Head coach Rob Stevenson said he was pleased with the shutout and the large margin of victory in his team’s 2014 playoff opener. “The whole offensive line as a unit was fantastic and I really liked what I saw from wingback Naythan Vogt. Quarterback North Rainey was throwing some precision footballs,” Stevenson

said. “Defensively, a big game from Doyl Sosnowski and again, our linebackers [played] terrific, every one of them.” Rainey said he was pleased with the win and also complimentary of his teammates. “Our receivers did a great job today in holding onto the balls ... they (offensive line) played really well,” he said. The Bulldogs’ next game is against the Seaquam Seahawks this Saturday (Nov. 22) at Merle Logan Field.
