Mayor-elect left with no time to dawdle
ElEction: Andy Adams has to get right to work after winning mayor’s seat on Saturday Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
It’s been only four days since Andy Adams learned he will become Campbell River’s new mayor, but already the three-term councillor has to get down to business. Adams said with the municipal election being in mid-November that doesn’t leave council – which will be full of new faces – with much time to identify its strategic priorities and prepare for financial planning which usually begins in December. “With the election being late in the year, the timeframe for strategic planning and financial planning is really compressed so we need to bond the team very quickly and get to work,” Adams said. The veteran councillor, who has served nine years on Campbell River council, gave up his councillor seat to take a run at the mayor’s chair. The risk paid off Saturday when Adams was elected mayor, garnering 4,370 votes. Adams unseated current mayor Walter Jakeway who finished second with 4,249 votes. Steve Wood came third in the mayoral race with 598 votes. At an election reception at Seymour Pacific Saturday night, after Adams learned his fate, the mayorelect thanked all of those who ran for council, and specifically thanked

toral areas – five Trustees from Campbell River, one from Quadra Island/ Cortes Island and one from the Sayward Valley. As of the Mirror’s print deadline, however, Sayward Valley is reporting a tie between incumbent Trustee Barbara Bowbrick and challenger Gail Kirshner, so the final make-up of the board cannot be confirmed at this time. A recount of the votes was scheduled to happen Tuesday after the Mirror went to press, with the results expected “before the end of the day on Wednesday,” according to Chief Election Officer for the Strathcona Regional District Tom
Mike Davies CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The municipal election last weekend saw not only the election of a new mayor and council to oversee our fine city, but also a new board to oversee education in our region, as well. Well, it almost did, anyway. The Campbell River Board of Education is made up of elected Trustees from three elec-
Yates. “Although (ties) happen infrequently, I have had to deal with deadlock situations previously,” he said. “In the event the results show a tie vote following (Tuesday’s recount), I will be applying for a judicial recount of the results,” which is a recount presided over by a judge of a superior court in the electoral district where the election was held, which must happen within four days of the application. If the judicial recount determines the vote is, in fact, a tie, section 141 of the Local Government Act will go into effect, according to SD72 com-
munications officer Jennifer Patrick, which means the candidates’ names will be written on pieces of paper, which are then folded up before one name is drawn by an independent representative. The name on the piece of paper drawn will then be declared the winner of the election. The Trustees elected from the Campbell River electoral region were Ted Foster, Daryl Hagen, John Kerr, Joyce McMann and Richard Franklin. Susan Wilson ran unopposed in the Quadra electoral region, and was therefore acclaimed in the position.
F o s t e r, H a g e n , McMann and Wilson were all incumbents who are returning to sit on the board for another term. Previous board chair Michele Babchuk ran and was elected as a city councillor, while Linda Jay was the only incumbent Trustee to run for the position and not be re-elected. Watch upcoming editions of the Mirror to learn more about what the board plans to do for the district over their term, or attend the first sitting of the new group on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the SD72 office on Pinecrest Road, beside Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Voter turnout increases
WeDNeSDaY,NOVEMBER NovembeR19, 19,2014 2014 | | CAMPBELL CampbellRIVER RiveRMIRROR miRRoR | | 33 WEDNESDAY,
www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com
Voter tur nout in Campbell River was up nine per cent over the last municipal election in 2011. A total of 39 per cent of voters cast a ballot in Saturday’s election, which translates to 9,308 votes cast out of 24,167 eligible voters. Votes were cast all day Saturday and in two advance polls on Nov. 5 and Nov. 12. In 2011, which saw one of the lowest voter turnout rates in Campbell River’s history, just 30 per cent cast a ballot. Efforts made by local media and the Young Professionals of Campbell River (YPCR) to get the vote out this year appeared to have paid off, as Campbell River’s voter turnout rate beat the provincial average of 33.3 per cent. The Mirror, for its part, ran all of the candidates bios and platforms, as well as several question and answer segments and sponsored an allcandidates forum alongside the YPCR at the Tidemark Theatre. The forum was part two of a four-pronged approach by the YPCR
to encourage its members to cast a ballot. The first event was a presentation by civic electoral officer Peter Wipper on voter apathy to the YPCR membership, and the third and final portion was an “I Voted” party Saturday night after the polls closed. Wipper said because election officials are unable to track demographics, such as the age of those who came out to vote, it’s difficult to say whether voting rates among the city’s younger population did in fact go up. But while voter turnout as a whole increased, claims on the Mirror’s Facebook page about renters being told that only one person per household could vote, dissuaded at least one woman from going to the polls, according to her Facebook post. Wipper said he would like to know how the discussion originated to determine what happened. He said election officials made every effort they possibly could to allow people to vote, as long as they owned property in Campbell River or they lived in the
city for at least 30 days and were at least 18 years old. Wipper said he finds it hard to believe anyone was turned away because they’re a renter. “We would never do that,” Wipper said. “All the staff were welltrained. I stood before all the election officials and I told them the most important thing a Canadian has is the right to
vote.” Wipper said if someone was not on the voting list, they could produce two pieces of I.D. – one with a signature and one proving their address. If they recently moved they could prove their address by bringing in a rental agreement or any bills mailed to them at their new address. For those who are
homeless and don’t have a fixed address, a voter could sign a declaration swearing they are a resident of Campbell River. Watch for more on this issue in upcoming editions of the Mirror. If you were turned back at the voting station, tell us your story, contact us at 287-9227 or email editor@campbellrivermirror.com.

Leigh will take to heart when it comes time for the board to prioritize issues and work plans. Leigh said she is pleased to be able to continue her work as Area D director. “I am really looking forward to the next four years of working with the Area D community and with my colleagues at the regional level as we move forward with a revised community plan, install the community garden and adult exercise equipment at Hagel Park, install a water pump station along Craig Road, see our new hospitals finished, our landfill plans completed and our libraries continuing to be upgraded,” Leigh said. “I am so excited to be re-elected Area D director. “It is truly an honour to continue doing the work I love – serving the wonderful people of my community and making a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of our region.” Leigh also thanked all of those who voted and her opponent for running and offering the electorate in Area D a choice. On Cortes, Director Anderson, who edged out Brown, said although it was not a runaway win, she hopes to win the sup-
port of all Cortes Islanders. “Close to half were ready for different leadership – change that you did not receive insomuch as a new face, however, I truly do encourage those of you who supported other candidates to speak with me and let me know what you want to see done differently,” Anderson said. “I promise I will be open to hearing your input and working with you. “I have a lot of time for people who come both with concerns and suggestions.” Anderson thanked her supporters and her campaign team for her reelection and said she will move forward on her key campaign issues. Anderson plans on working to facilitate an economic plan, starting with a symposium next year to learn, as well as work with Island Health and BC Ambulance Service to fund and support better home care and community paramedicine. Anderson also intends to better relations with local First Nations and focus on a Cortes zoning bylaw update. The Strathcona Regional District holds its inaugural board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Campbell River’s new mayor, Andy Adams, right, celebrates at a post-election reception with his wife Karen Saturday night at Seymour Pacific.
Adams said. “I’m very proud of the team. It was clean, it was professional, it was what we wanted to do.” And last, but certainly not least, Adams recognized his wife Karen for all of her support. “I couldn’t have done this without my wife, she has been absolutely incredible and amazing,” Adams said. “I’m a very lucky man.” The new council will be sworn in at an inaugural council meeting Dec. 2. will hear that message loud and clear and will continue on being fiscally responsible and keeping things as constrained as they can be moving forward,” Adams said. The mayor-elect said the first order of business will be to meet with all of the councillors. “The one thing I’ve been saying all along is it’s not up to me,” Adams said. “I’m one of seven and so the first thing I want to get going is to sit down with each of the new members of council, find out what their passion is, what their strengths are, what they want to be directly involved in, if we’re going to get into portfolios, commissions or committees, and we need to do that very quickly.” Adams said those discussions will lead into strategic planning which will set the new council’s strategic priorities for the next four years. He said no matter what happens, “it’s going to be a team decision.” Speaking of teams, Adams credited his campaign team, made up of Bill Matthews, a former councillor and freeman of the city, and Roy Grant, who gave up his seat on council in 2011 to run for mayor, with a job well done. “I had an excellent team. We had a plan and we moved it forward,”

School District 72’s board of education – with 4,056 votes. Also elected were incumbent Larry Samson with 4,047 votes, incumbent Ron Kerr with 3,571 votes, former owner of Beaver Lumber and Work World, Marlene Wright, with 3,455 votes and Colleen Evans, president of the Chamber of Commerce, with 3,144 votes. Claire Moglove was the only incumbent running for re-election to not be returned to council. Councillors Mary Storry and the departedfor-Alberta Ryan Mennie did not run for reelection, which opened the door for at least two new councillors. Adams said Saturday he is eager to work with the newly elected council, which he acknowledged is a good mix of people. “It’s going to be what I was sort of hoping for and that’s a good cross section of people from different backgrounds, different experiences, some new and with Charlie (Cornfield) – and I say this in the kindest way possible – some recycled,” Adams said. “But I’m really looking forward to Charlie’s wealth of experience. “We’ve got a good balance, with Michele (Babchuk) with her experience on school board, Colleen (Evans) from the chamber and her experi-

Our View
Restore pride and confidence in our city government Congratulations to all those who stood for public office in Saturday’s election. Your willingness to serve your community deserves applause. Thank-you also to those whose We say: We need service is coming to a close because of to step down or because of an effective team aa decision loss at the ballot box. Serving your at the helm of community is never a loss and we are the better for you having made your local government all contribution. For those who were successful in attaining a seat on city council, regional district board and school board, roll up your sleeves it’s time to get to work.
It’s been said many times and it bears repeating, but the Campbell River area is undergoing a period of significant change and significant challenge. As this region continues its transition from dependency on one large employer and tax revenue generator –the now-closed Elk Falls pulp and paper mill – we will need more ideas, greater creativity and no small measure of courage. The rewards for our community can potentially be great but the risks for politicians can be even greater. We have an electorate that has a thin skin when it comes to tolerating wastefulness and unnecessary spending, that message can not be any clearer after the election campaign we just went through. We are having to make do with less
but it does not mean that an adequate level of services is not possible. It just means that decisions will need to be transparent, well thought out and innovative. This is not the time to be taking the easy road, i.e., holding your hand out to taxpayers for more – but neither is it a time for cutting for the sake of cutting. We need intelligent management of the resources we have on hand. We also need to restore the confidence in our City Hall that has been eroded by criticism – however well intended – we have to restore trust in our municipal government and we have to restore pride in our community. It’s a big job, now get to it.

Blessings in a backpack
Radiant Life community Church is committed to serving those who are in need of a helping hand, may it be a hot meal or dry warm clothing or a kind ear to talk to. We need to raise funds to provide some basic personal needs like toothbrushes and dry socks. We need your help with our upcoming plan for the homeless for Christmas morning. We are calling it blessings in a backpack, which is to be held on Christmas morning at the extreme cold weather shelter. The idea is to buy and fill a backpack with basic personal hygiene products and a couple of gift cards – a $5 long distance phone card, to call family and a $5 gift card for McDonalds for a hot meal on Christmas morning. We need funds or donations to help provide backpack etc. We would appreciate a donation. The idea is to buy a backpack and with the list provided, fill it. Thus ends one of the most controversial mayoralties
Alistair Taylor
Out On A Limb @AlstrT
editor@campbellrivermirror.com
Close but no cigar for Walter Jakeway’s re-election. It wasn’t as close as his first election three years ago when he defeated Roy Grant and Ziggy Stewart but it was still pretty close. And thus ends undeniably the most controversial mayoralty in recent Campbell River history. Jakeway claimed in the later months of his term and in the campaign that there was not much actual infighting on this council. He claimed it was all manufactured by the media but that’s not actually so. Oh, if I only had a dollar for every time the media was blamed for controversy... Technically, he may have been right in that most council decisions were made without rancour, his initiatives going down to democratic defeat at the table.
The controversies came when he was asked for comment after the meeting and that’s when he’d air his grievances about the decisions being made. So, yes, council may not have fought at the table but Jakeway always seemed to want to air his dissatisfaction with decisions outside the council chambers. For us in the news business, Jakeway was great material. We’ll miss him. But, we move on now with Andy Adams at the helm. Start crankin’ up those tax increases! Just kidding. Taxation was the issue of the election and in the mayoral race, it split the community almost down the middle. On one side there was the incumbent maverick mayor who was dead set against any tax increases, wanted to rein
in senior municipal staff and felt that he did not have to toe any line on council decisions, making the city look divided. On the other side was what has been painted as the old boy candidate who racked up tax increases but could at least get along with other councillors, city staff and majority decisions. Now, it wasn’t Adams that cranked up the tax increases. He’s just been saddled with that association. He actually voted against the big 13.6 per cent tax increase in 2012, one of three votes against. Mayor Jakeway came in on the tail end of a process to wean Campbell River off the Elk Falls pulp mill tax cow. That tax teat ran dry when the mill was shut down. The last two councils had to shift the tax burden away from this suddenly non-existent motherlode to the existing
business and residential tax bases. That’s a fact of life, and the no-taxincrease faction provided no other alternative to paying for the services we enjoy. To cut them back to the point where we would have no tax increase would have been a painful and unpopular move. In fact, it would have been unrealistic. The last two councils chose instead to spread the pain over a longer period of time. A much more politically-prudent plan. Anybody who walked in there and chopped services would have been out on their ear in three years. Also interesting is the fact that Jakeway’s slate of candidates – the CHOICE slate – were unable to get a single member on council. Not one. And they had very credible

Gold River, Zeballos voters elect new mayors
Two neighbouring communities in the Strathcona Regional District returned incumbents to their mayors’ chairs while two others have newcomers at the helm. Jude Schooner was re-elected mayor of Tahsis with 66 votes. David McIntosh was second with 61 votes, followed by Martin Davis with 41 and Steve Atkinson with four votes. Sayward mayor John MacDonald will also return to the regional district table, after winning his re-election bid with 84 votes. Brian Wiebe was second with 36 votes while Michael Marsh finished
with 19 votes. In Zeballos, Donnie Cox was elected mayor with 64 votes, followed by Wayne Arnold with 12 votes and Cristina Lepore with 10. As Zeballos’ new mayor, Cox will also have a seat at the regional district table. Former chair Craig Anderson lost his seat at the regional district board Saturday, after running an unsuccessful bid for re-election as mayor of Gold River. Challenger Brad Unger was elected mayor with 356 votes, with Anderson finishing in second place with 240 votes and Doug Arcus finishing third with 53 votes.

individuals. Bob Bray struck me as the most prepared candidate with numbers to back up his points but the former BC Conservative candidate in the provincial election has now stood for office twice in the Campbell River area and has failed to convince the majority to vote for him. He placed ninth in the number of councillor votes. Bray is starting to seem desperate to win an elected office. Any office. It’s too bad, he’s got a lot of smarts, credibility and is willing to work hard which, of course, means he’s not cut out for public office. Former mayor Charlie Cornfield topped the polls as the leading councillor vote getter. This to me further cements the notion that a majority of voters were not interested in CHOICE. Cornfield of all the candidates had a history that could have come under fire but it didn’t seem to deter votes for him. A newcomer to coun-

cil, Michele Babchuk, took the second highest number of votes, showing her service as a school trustee was no hindrance. A second newcomer, Marlene Wright, has an extensive long-term connection with the community through her work with various community groups. The third newcomer, Colleen Evans, found that her visibility as Chamber of Commerce CEO and her organizational credibility were appreciated by a large number of voters. Incumbents L arr y Samson and Ron Kerr maintained their popularity with voters. Only one incumbent couldn’t trade in her experience for another term and she finished seventh just out of the six seats on council. Claire Moglove was one of the few councillors who was willing to publicly stand up to Jakeway’s anti-consensus actions. She proved to be pretty tough and that was needed on that council. this time. Perhaps that was the biggest problem for the CHOICE candidates. Civic politics is definitely about name recognition. Of the CHOICE slate, only Bray had any political visibility, although he is a relative newcomer to Campbell River. Some of the others who announced their candidacy left many people scratching their heads saying, “Who?” But, on the other hand, visibility didn’t help other candidates. Les Lengyel is a very active member of the community, although never having sat in elected office. He had the best slogan though – “Do More With Les!” Ziggy Stewart sat on previous councils and ran for mayor last election – many attributing to Stewart a potential majority-killing draw of votes away from Roy Grant, paving the way for Jakeway to win. And the rest, they say is history. A very interesting history. Old shoot-from-thelip Jakeway is gone. And how did he assess his

time as mayor? “I could not have achieved my vision for Campbell River with the council elected, so I’d rather do something more enjoyable,” he told our reporter kristen Douglas. “It would have been four years of agony. Being mayor is off my bucket list forever.” So, in other words, if council wouldn’t do what he wanted, he didn’t want the job. As usual, it was all about him. Never mind what the majority on council, the majority of voters wanted, if he couldn’t impose his vision, then forget it. Jakeway always seemed more concerned about making himself the story and less about what was best for the community. And that rubbed a lot of voters the wrong way. So, on we go with Andy Adams. On election night, Adams said he has heard those voters loud and clear who said they wanted fiscal restraint. Now, that already sounds like a different tune coming from the mayor’s chair. But we shall see. Right?

Affordability issues and cramped living arrangements brought to light by new data MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Too many people in the Campbell River area are paying too much of their income to landlords and utilities companies. That’s according to a recent study done by the BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA), who gathered census data and compiled it into an online database to shed light on the current housing situation in the province. The study says that housing is “typically considered affordable if a household spends 30 per cent or less of its beforetax income on rent and utilities.” But of the 4,240 rental households in the Strathcona region, almost half (46 per cent) pay more than 30 per cent of their income just to live inside and keep the power on. Almost a quarter of them (24 per cent) are paying more than half of
their pre-tax income for the same privilege. 355 two-b edro om renter households earn less than $17,515 and pay more than half of their income on rent, according to the study. Those households would need to more than double their total household income in order to get their ratio down to below the 30 per cent threshold that would qualify their living situation as “affordable.” In Campbell River, renter households earning less than $17,590 living in two-bedroom units pay an average of 77 per cent of their income on rent and utilities. Affordability is not the only problem the study highlights, however. In the Strathcona region, according to the study, 205 renter households are also living in dwellings that are too small for their household size and composition,
based on the National Occupancy Standard set by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The CMHC standard states that suitable housing has enough bedrooms for the size and make-up of resident households as long as there is one bedroom for each cohabiting adult couple, each lone parent, each unattached household member over the age of 18, each same-sex pair of children under the age of 18 and each additional boy or girl in the family, “unless there are two opposite sex children under five years of age, in which case they are expected to share a bedroom.” 225 more bedrooms are needed in rental properties in the Strathcona region to comfortably accommodate the number of renters here, based on this definition. 215 of those would need to be in Campbell River
itself, where 190 of those overcrowded renter households are. “This is a chance to look at the province through the eyes of renters,” Executive Director of BCNPHA Tony Roy said of the data. “Many know their rent is too high, but feel like they don’t have a choice but to pay up. We’re not building more rental housing, so renters are forced to overspend, living in overcrowded or deteriorated conditions, or they become homeless. “It’s a shame because it’s far cheaper to plan for more rental housing than to deal with the huge costs linked to homelessness, on the health and justice systems. “If we don’t invest in affordable housing today, we end up paying a much higher price down the road.” The study and its results can be found at bcnpha.ca/rhi

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
O
ne of Canada’s most celebrated artists will be in Campbell River Friday. Your chance to meet Robert Bateman, have him sign a work of his that you own or even add a print, book or calendar to your collection will be brought to you by John Westergard, owner of the new Pier Street Gallery. “The beat still goes on,” the 84-year-old Bateman told the Mirror. “I am still getting wonderful lineups of people.” Bateman will be at the Pier Street Gallery, 910B Island Highway, from 7-9:30 p.m. on Friday. There will be Bateman books, calendars and prints available and Bateman is happy to sign them. He’s also amenable to people bringing anything they already have for him to sign. “I will sign pretty well anything,” he said. Bateman should require no introduction. He’s one of the country’s most internationallycelebrated artists and naturalists. His honours, awards and honorary doctorates are numerous: he was made Officer of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian award in 1984. He has also been given the Rachel Carson Award (1996), the Golden Plate from the American Academy of Achievement (1998) and the

Order of British Columbia (2001), and Human Rights Defender Award from Amnesty International (2007); he was named one of the 20th Century’s Champions of Conservation by the U.S. National Audubon Society (1998). This will be Bateman’s first visit to Campbell River. He’s passed through here before, speaking occasionally
at Hollyhock on Cortes Island as well as visiting Hornby Island regularly. Bateman has known Pier Street Gallery owner Westergard for many years, having appeared at his Prince George gallery. But Campbell River has never been a specific stop for Bateman. “I haven’t lingered nearly long enough,” Bateman said.
But the Saltspring Island-based artist is always on the move. “My lifestyle is never lingering long enough,” he said with a laugh. “I have been doing this since 1981, that’s when my first book came out.” Since then it has been years of gallery sales and book tours. But Bateman said what he loves most about it is meeting art lovers.
We have a
year, he sailed on the Maple Leaf, a wooden sailboat built in 1909, to the Great Bear Rainforest, which will also be the subject of many of the sketches in his book. Not long after his Campbell River visit, Bateman will travel to the Gallapagos Islands, which will undoubtedly fill another sketchbook. When not travelling, Bateman continues to paint in his studio on Saltspring. “I paint every day, all day until 10 o’clock at night, seven days a week,” Bateman said. “Except when I am interrupted. I am inter-
rupted a lot.” Part of his daily routine are two 40-minute sessions of just being out in nature. To get a real sense of the artist, you can visit the website for his Victoria-based Bateman Centre (www.batemancentre.org). Located in the Steamship Terminal on Victoria’s Inner Harbour, the centre displays the definitive collection of Robert Bateman’s work, which is used to support a dynamic program of public events. But if you want to meet him face-to-face, swing by the Pier Street Gallery on Friday.

“Mostly to me it’s about meeting the people,” he said. “I am just delighted with the opportunity to meet people.” On Friday night Bateman will bring along his sketch book which he bases a presentation on. “I am carrying my little sketchbook with me,” Bateman said. Bateman prefers to use a sketchbook in the field more so than a camera because it focuses his mind, it allows him to experience a setting in a deeper, more meaningful way. A photo happens so fast you don’t get to linger in the moment the way you can when you are sketching a scene. On Friday, Bateman will have two recent trips recorded in his sketchbook that he will delve into. In May, he went to Japan on a birdwatching trip which he spent with a member of the Japanese royal family who is also an avid birder. Then later in the

The Hospital Auxiliary is supporting a local initiative that will work to have art become an integral part of the Campbell River Hospital. “The idea is to have local art become part of the healing process,” according to Ken Blackburn, Executive Director of the Campbell River Arts Council. “We aim to have staff, visitors and patients all sense that they are part of the larger community when working in, visiting or recovering within the hospital. The therapeutic value of art is quickly gaining recognition around the world,” he noted. “We can’t thank the Auxiliary enough for this support. It takes each of us, working within our individual capacities, to
contribute to the complex healing process undertaken within our local hospital,” Blackburn said. “Our role, through this art project, will be to create an environment that reflects the care and compassion of our community.” Local groups will be providing art and design motifs. To begin, partners in the Art in the Hospital Initiative will be Campbell River Family Services, the Head Injury Support Group, Carihi, the Art Gallery, local elementary schools and hospital staff. A launch is planned for early January. For more information please contact the Arts Council at arts.council@ crarts.ca or call 250-9230213.

The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle “Face-off”
WEDNESDAY, 21 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 19, 19, 2014 2014 || CAMPBELL CAMPBELL RIVER RIVER MIRROR MIRROR || 21
www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com
The local Salvation Army’s 25th annual red Christmas Kettle Campaign will be kicked off with the sound of a buzzer this holiday season. The Salvation Army has been invited on behalf of the Campbell River Storm to do the Official Christmas Kettle Kick-off or “Face-Off ” at the Nov. 30 home game as the Storm face their arch-rivals, the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. “The Campbell River Storm is proud to partner with the Salvation Army to help raise awareness to the needs of those who are less fortunate in our community,” according to Storm Governor
Wes Roed. “The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is a fundraising effort that occurs each year during the Christmas season,” according to Captain Gordon Taylor of the Salvation Army. “Red Kettles are found in 10 locations across our community and is an opportunity for people to donate whatever funds they can to support the work of The Salvation Army during the Christmas season and throughout the year.” “For too many in our community, the necessities of life needed for basic human dignity are out of reach. Poverty is
the root cause that puts dignity out of reach for hundreds in our community, making access to everyday needs, like food, clothing and shelter, difficult. Funds raised through donations made at Christmas Kettles support our work at the Lighthouse Centre downtown, providing direct, compassionate, hands-on service to people in need each year, restoring hope and dignity to those who might otherwise remain invisible in society,” according to Sean Junglas, Salvation Army Community Ministries Director. “This level of outreach is only possible because

dinator, at 250-287-1440. The goal for this year’s Red Kettle Campaign and Christmas Letter
As the Boomer generation ages, many Canadians are facing the challenges of elder care for their parents and they may also be caring for their own children. So it’s not a surprise that elder care can be difficult and stressful. Still, you will do it willingly – because your parents have always been there for you and now you can be there for them. The questions you have to answer are these: How will you provide the care and support they need without crippling their finances – or yours – should one or both face the need for extended medical support? And how will you provide a potentially intensified level of care over many years without significant physical and emotional consequences? The first answer is long-term care insurance. This is a good solution for those who want to avoid placing the burden for care on a spouse or adult children, and for adult children who want to ensure that parents on fixed incomes will have access to
quality long-term care. You may think that services like in-home nursing or personal care are covered by government health plans – but they’re not and relying on government-funded programs can lead to a loss of control. The stay-home partner has little influence over where a loved one will be placed and travel can be difficult and costly. Long-term care insurance bridges the gap by providing financial assistance for ongoing care services in the home, assisted-living setting or long-term care facility. Depending on the type of plan, long-term care funds can be used to pay for eligible services for the person receiving the care or to provide a regular income that can be used for any purpose, including caregiving by family members. The second answer is to protect your physical and emotional health. Long-term care insurance can alleviate financial stress but, as a primary caregiver, you may still stress your mental and physical health

to the breaking point over time. Here are some signs of an over-achieving caregiver: • No one can look after your loved one like you. • You go for weeks without a break. • Only you understand your loved one’s unique needs. • You feel exhausted and anxious. • You have no time for hobbies, interests and friends. • You bottle up fears, guilt and anger. If that should happen to you, reach out to a family physician, family members, friends and community support services, or visit caregiver.ca. Then talk to your professional advisor about using long-term care insurance to bridge financial and emotional gaps and protect your family’s wellbeing.

Trayler, Stephen Edward “Steve (November 10, 1949 – November 10, 2014)
In loving memory
Steve passed away suddenly on Quadra Island on his 65th birthday leaving sadness in the hearts of so many. He was born in Vancouver, BC, the son of the late Cecil and Doreen Trayler. Steve is survived by his brother Michael Trayler, his niece Jennifer Trayler and nephew Jesse Trayler. Although separated, Steve maintained a relationship and was survived by his wife Susan Trayler and left behind his step children Simone Lamont (and husband Tim), Fraser Jordan (and wife Ali) and his beloved grandchildren Gracie, Ava, Mia and Ronin. Steve was employed as a civil servant for years. However, for the majority of his life, he made a living and was best known as a talented and passionate musician, songwriter, artist, painter, storyteller, photographer and performer. As such, Steve was a mentor to all, young and old, and enjoyed nothing more than a good old casual open Island jam session. It is in this spirit that a Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Herriot Bay Inn on Quadra Island. All who loved Steve are welcome.

EMBLETON, Edith May (nee Silvester)
May 20, 1921 – October 31, 2014 With sadness, May’s family announces that she passed away peacefully on October 31, 2014. May was predeceased by her husband Reginald (Rex) Embleton and her brothers Stan and Reg. May is survived by her loving family: daughters Sandi (Fred) Ivan and Trina (Edward) Soltys as well as grandchildren Natascha (Ryan) Jones and Kent (Candace) Soltys and great-granddaughters Brooklyn and Gabriella Jones; all of whom were precious to May. In addition, she is survived by a very special nephew Alan (Jen) Silvester in England and many other nieces and nephews in Britain and Canada as well as other places far and near. May was born in Churt, Farnham, Surrey, England on May 20, 1921. May’s parents, Edith and Francis were both born in England and were employed by the Earl of Snowden as chauffeur and housekeeper, employment which eventually found a young May living in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands. Returning to England, May met and married her husband Rex, a young Canadian soldier from the Comox Valley in 1943. May immigrated to Canada as a War Bride in 1946, landing in Halifax and travelling by train to settle in Comox where she and her husband raised their two girls. Rex worked as a shipwright at the Goose Spit and May worked part-time at the Comox Post Office. Rex and May moved to Quadra Island in 1965, where they ‘homesteaded’ while building their own house on two acres close to the ferry. Rex at that time was working for MacMillan and Bloedel and May turned a raspberry patch into a ’cash’ crop, selling berries to the local grocery store. The home became a favourite place for grandchildren to play, climb trees and explore. May and Rex also welcomed travelers and hitchhikers who often became friends. Skilled in the domestic arts, May grew her own organic fruits and vegetables and was an exquisite seamstress, making sure her girls knew how to can, pickle, cook and sew. She also got up very early so that when all her chores were done there was plenty of time to spend an afternoon at the beach with her children. May created a very happy home and memories of a wonderful childhood will never be forgotten by her daughters and grandchildren. May’s family wishes to express sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of Comox Valley Seniors’ Centre for the outstanding compassionate care she received over the past few years. You were also ‘family’ to May. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 21 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 228 S. Dogwood St, Campbell River, BC.

moves well but the biggest thing he brings to our team is personality and leadership. He gets the guys fired up and everyone knows he’s there to bail us out if need be.” Campbell River built a 3-0 lead against Nanaimo on goals by Logan, James Severs, and defenceman Devyn Grant. The Buccaneers managed to get one past Michel late in the second period but Logan and Gage Colpron scored 23 seconds apart midway through the third to salt away the victory. Final shots on goal favoured the Storm, 52-30. The Storm got off to another quick start against Kerry Park, jumping out to a 2-0 first period advantage on goals by Logan and line mate Tyler Welsh, who leads all rookies in scoring with 32 points. The Islanders tried to get back in the game with a physical approach in the second period, but the Storm made them pay with a pair of powerplay markers by veteran winger Michael Olson. “He’s a goal scorer, no doubt about it,” Stone said of Olson. “I kind of had a feeling he was going to break out this year and have a great season. Both of his goals tonight were post-andin. He’s definitely fun to watch.” Olson and teammate Colin Blake are tied for first place in league scoring, each with 34 points. Sam McMullen of the Victoria Cougars is one point behind. The Storm go for its 20th win of the season Friday night when the Saanich Braves roll into town. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
Far left, Brooklyn Reesor, left, and Kaitlyn Herbert of the Timberline Wolves defend the net. Far right, Timberine’s Tommie Corder hits the ball over the net during a semifinal game at the AAA girls volleyball Island Championships, held at Timberline last weekend. The Wolves went on to the final against Dover Bay and won 3-1. Timberline won the first set 25-20, lost the second 23-25 and then won the final two sets 27-25 and 25-13 to defend their title.

The Campbell River Storm overcame a spate of injuries and the flu bug to record a pair of gutsy victories last weekend. At home on Friday night, Connor Logan scored twice in a 5-1 win over the Nanaimo Buccaneers, while Jesse Michel posted a shutout on Saturday as the Storm downed the Islanders 4-0 in Kerry Park. Campbell River has now won five in a row, nine of its last ten games, and continues to lead the overall Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League standings with a remarkable record of 19-2-1. On the weekend the Storm managed to keep its current win streak alive despite playing without flu-ridden forwards Christian Brandt and Zack Sanderson, plus the loss of steady defenceman Nathan Browne and high-scoring centreman Dane Feeney to injuries. “We’ve been playing really good hockey the past couple of weeks,” said Storm head coach Lee Stone. “We started to realize the way we need to play – which is get the puck deep and go to work down low. More importantly, our overall team defence has been excellent, especially during these past two games.” The improved defensive play coincides with the arrival of new goaltender Michel, who has recorded two shutouts and allowed just one goal against since taking over in the Storm net three games ago. “ The addition of Michel has really stabilized us on the backend,” said Stone. “He’s big and

Something for everyone A November tradition in Campbell River which began way back in 1975, raising the lofty (for the day) sum of $21,179.35, the 40th Annual TV Auction will air on Shaw Cable Channel 4 starting this Friday, November 21st at 6:00 pm. and continuing through Saturday from 9:00 am until 10:30 pm. The entire Auction will also be streamed live on RotaryTVAuction.com. Members of the Rotary Club of Campbell River and their spouses, along with the members of the Carihi Interact Club will take over the studios at Shaw for 18 hours of live, unrehearsed television. Viewers will find a huge variety of items and services to bid on, all generously donated by local businesses and individuals. There will be, literally, something for everyone. Items range in value from $20 to $6,400 and include hun-
Do you fancy a helicopter tour for five people (we’ve got two of them!)? Or some original art work or native carvings (we’ve got several)? Or a golf trip to some of the Okanagan’s best courses? How about a whale watching trip? Or a getaway to the big city? Maybe a stay at a flyfishing lodge? Does your car need some new tires or your boat need some work? Perhaps you need a new lawn or even a new concrete driveway? You can pamper yourself with a manicure/pedicure, get a new hairdo and a facial and treat yourself to some quality jewellery. We’ve got it all at our TV Auction - including the kitchen sink (or at least the faucet for it). Other items range in value from $20 to $6,400, covering everything from lunch at local restaurants to a complete Hearing Aid Package - and dozens and dozens of
dreds of Gift Certificates and items that would make ideal Christmas gifts - a wonderful opportunity to buy items that you would buy anyway, while supporting the worthwhile efforts of the Rotary Club. All money raised at the Auction stays in Campbell River and will go towards the Club’s Community Projects. Past projects have included the Rotary Seawalk, the Centennial Pool, Our Place, the Fishing Pier, Carihi’s Infant and Toddler Centre, Ken Forde Park, the Interpretive Centre at Willow Point and the popular SplashPark at the Sportsplex. The Club is now working toward completing the fabulous suspension bridge over the Elk Falls that will rival the Capilano Suspension Bridge and is looking at a couple of potential major projects that will change the face of Campbell River.
Gift Certificates that are good as cash and can be used for whatever you want! The best part is that you can get all this while supporting the Rotary Club of Campbell River’s efforts to make Campbell River an even better place to live!

www.RotaryTVAuction.com
No Cable? No Problem! People without Shaw Cable, or who are away from their TVs can view and take part in the auction online at www.RotaryTVAuction.com. Go to the website, then select ”View Live Auction” from the menu on the left side. Also on the website is a complete list of auction items showing the current bid for each item, listed by item number as well as by category, guidelines for the auction, and a complete schedule.
You can place an Online Bid now on any item from the website, but note that Online Bids will only be accepted up to 15 minutes before the hour the item is scheduled to go live in. For example, Online bids on item number 220 will close at 6:45 pm on Friday. Once online bidding ends for any item - you must call the Auction Line at 250-923-2437 to continue bidding on that item at the time it is being auctioned.
Save Time - Register and Bid On-line You must register in order to bid on-line - and, while not mandatory, your bidder number will speed up the process of live bidding, as well as ensure the accuracy of bids taken over the phone. This is done from the Main Page of the Auction Website (RotaryTVAuction.com). When you register, you will get an Auction Number, Password, and an Online Alias (for privacy) which will simplify online bidding (as well as live phone bidding) and make it much more convenient.
By registering, you can: 1. Bid more conveniently online since the software will auto-fill name and phone numbers. 2. Track your online bids (by your alias). 3. Easily re-bid on any item or a new item. 4. View who else (by alias) is bidding on your items. 5. Receive an email alert if you are overbid on any item. The Auction Number can also be used for live bids which will help ensure accuracy of names and phone numbers.
Pre-Bid by phone too Starting at 2:00 pm on Friday
Rotary Club members will be manning the phones from 2:00 pm to 6pm on Friday and during the auction broadcast times Friday and Saturday to take your phone pre-bids. Call 250-923-BIDS (2437), tell them your name, phone number (or your Online Auction Number), plus the item number and your bid. If you are the successful bidder, you will be contacted by a Rotary Club member.
You’ve won a bid. Now what?
OK, you’ve won the bid on the item, or items, that you hoped to get. How do you pay for them? Where do you pick them up? Purchases can be paid for and picked up at the Shaw office at 500 Robron Road anytime during the auction broadcast. Rotarians will also be at the Shaw Studio on Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Monday & Tuesday, November 24th and 25th, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. In many cases we will have the item on hand to give you, in others, we will give you a certificate that you can take to the donor business to pick up your item. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, Visa or Mastercard. Please note that GST and PST will be charged on applicable items and that the Rotary Club does not issue charitable tax receipts. Bids on the Auction Board at the Auction Studio location are final. Thank you and good luck!
Note that many people with pre-bids fail to win their item because they do not call in once the item is on the block - someone could easily out bid you by $5 and win the item. So please call in when the item is live.

REGISTER AND BID ONLINE AT www.RotaryTVAuction.com
You must register in order to bid on-line - and, while not mandatory, your bidder number will speed up the process of live bidding, as well as ensure the accuracy of bids taken over the phone. Registration is done from the Main Page of the Auction Website (RotaryTVAuction.com). By registering, you can: 1. Bid more conveniently online since the software will autofill name and phone numbers. 2. Track your online bids (by your alias). 3. Easily re-bid on any item or a new item.
4. View who else (by alias) is bidding on your items. 5. Receive an email alert if you are overbid on any item. The Auction Number can also be used for live bids which will help ensure correct spelling of names and correct phone numbers. Online Bids will only be accepted up to 15 minutes before the hour the item is scheduled to go live in. For example, Online bids on item number 220 will close at 6:45 pm on Friday. Once online bidding ends for any item - you must call the Auction Line at 250-923-2437 to continue bidding on that item at the time it is being auctioned.

HELP ROTARY WIN THE FIGHT
Hearing Instrument Practitioners
Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985, but the fight isn’t over. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, and for as little as 60¢, a child can be protected against the virus for life. If we don’t finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralysed by polio in the next 40 years...
