They will definitely need to hand out name tags at the first meeting of the new Grand Forks City Council with a new mayor and four new councillors. Frank Konrad, who has never held a seat in politics before, beat incumbent Brian Taylor by a 53 vote margin, 503-450. Councillor Cher Wyers came a close third with 434 votes. Donna Semenoff picked up 144 votes, while Peter Demski had 31 votes. Returning to council were Michael Wirischagin, who led all candidates with 741 votes, and Neil Krog (592). Top vote getter among new councillors was Julia Butler, who had 702 votes. Christine Thompson, who was in council three years, had 676 votes. Also gaining spots were Chris Hammett (546) and Colleen Ross (539). Just finishing out of the six spots were Kathy

As the new mayor of Grand Forks, Frank Konrad plans to stick closely to his election platform of being transparent and that he will never betray the trust of the citizens. Konrad beat out incumbent Brian Taylor by a 503-450 margin for the mayor’s chair. Councillor Cher Wyers finished third with 434 votes. Konrad was pleased with the results and said it clearly signifies a desire for change from the voters. “To put it honestly, I was honoured and excited,” he told the Gazette on Monday. “I was really excited that the people made their choices and they send out a message and they chose me, and I’m honoured.” Konrad said the win showed a trust from the people for him and his campaign. “They wanted change, that’s the only way I can interpret it,” he said. “People wanted change and decided to go in my direction. People had trust in me to choose me as their new mayor.” Despite defeating a three-time incumbent (Taylor was mayor from 2011-14 as well two earlier stints), Konrad said he was not surprised. “I wasn’t surprised,” he said. “After having campaigned so hard going door to door, why would I be surprised? I got the message already ahead of time from the majority of citizens that I contacted. The writing was on the wall.” Konrad said his only fear heading into the regular election day on Nov. 15 was being dis-

Also running but not elected were were Baun Mark (440), FRANK KONRAD Richard Fausten (422), Lorraine Dick (388), Teresa Taylor (387), Larry Podmoroff (371) and Monique Van Ewyk (215). The referendum question (are you in favour of a deer cull?) passed by a 895-589 margin. Elected to school board trustee for Grand Forks were incumbent Teresa Rezansoff and newcomer Katie Jepsen. David Reid has been selected as Area D trustee once again. Roly Russell, who filled in as Area D director for 22 months after Irene Perepolkin suffered a stroke, was elected as RDKB Area D representative with 478 votes. Bob Kendel, a Grand Forks

city councillor, came second with 173 votes, While Perepolkin came third with 72. The number of eligible voters who voted in Grand Forks was 62 per cent with 1,579 ballots cast out of 2,556 registered in the poll book. “However, the registered voter number does not include those electorates who registered during the advance polls and general voting day,” said Diane Heinrich, chief election officer. Civicinfo.bc lists Grand Forks as having 3,031 eligible voters marking the percentage of voters at 52 per cent. Those numbers are actually down from 2011 when 1,550 voters out of 2,675 eligible voters for a total of 58 per cent, according to Heinrich. In Area D, 723 people voted out of 2,380 eligible voters for a total of 30.39 per cent voter turnout. Theresa Lenardon, chief electoral officer for the RDKB, said those numbers are up from 2011 by 9.71 per cent. All results are unofficial at this time.

RDKB seeks public input for community plan CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Residents in Area D are getting an opportunity to have their input into the official community plan (OCP). The RDKB is gathering information at the Grand Forks and District Public Library asking for residents to mark their non-motorized travel routes on a map. “Through the official community plan for Area D, we recognize that we need to do a better job,” said Roly Russell, director for Area D. “We’re looking at how to get input from the public on trails and transportation routes essentially that they feel are important for them to get around.” Russell said they are looking at identifying which transportation routes are particularly important for people. “For example, from Carson Road near the border and

people looking at getting into Grand Forks, if they don’t have a vehicle they’re stuck with walking in the ditch essentially on the side of the highway or riding on a very narrow edge,” he said. “We need to try to figure out a way to identify the pieces of the transportation network that need to be improved so we can go to (the Ministry of) Highways and give a prioritization list.” Russell said they are looking at transportation routes for both recreation as well as for work. Unlike the City of Grand Forks, which is responsible for repairing roads and infrastructure (except the highway), the RDKB relies on the provincial government for road and infrastructure repairs. At this point, the only map for gathering transportation information is at the library. “We just decided to put it up at the library as a starting point to see how it would get used,” he said. “We don’t have a vision of expanding it. It would be nice to see more

collaboration between the City of Grand Forks and the rural area in terms of mapping out these networks.” Russell said they have no end date planned for the map, but will check in regularly to see how it’s being used. “We just decided in conversations with the library and our head planner at the RDKB and our OCP committee, we thought it would be a neat little experiment to see if it was a useful way to get public input. If it’s used a lot we’ll keep it out there.” In the time that the map has been at the library, Russell said it’s been well used. The OCP sets out the vision for the RDKB areas for the next 10 years. “Any decisions that come out of the regional district officially are supposed to be guided by the official community plan that they operate under,” he said. “So this plan has involved a bunch of public consultation and will continue to do so.”

It appears that the chilly weather we’ve been experiencing in the Boundary will come to an end soon as temperatures are expected to warm up. “We had a really mild October,” said Doug Lundquist, Interior warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada. “In some places in the Southern Interior we had record for the warmest ever in October. Then we had a sudden shift to the cold.” Lundquist said that temperatures for this week will be closer to normal as a system moves in from the west. For the longer term, he said they expect temperatures to be warmer this winter. “We have two things going on: the waters of the Pacific Ocean just off shore are really mild for this time of year,” said Lundquist. “Most of our storms come from the west so they have to pass over that really warm water. Second thing is: we might be getting an El Nino which usually means the middle to latter part of winter is warmer than average in B.C.” Towards the end of the month, there is an 80-90 per cent chance than the temperature will be above average in our area, said Lundquist. “The seasonal forecast for December to February is a greater than 50 per cent chance that it will be above average temperature,” he said. Lundquist was reluctant to predict when the first real snowfall would occur but did say it could occur soon. “Usually when it tries to warm up from a cold spell,” he said. “So this week there might be a little snow but it will probably come as we warm up and start to melt again. For snow to stick—maybe December in your area.”

It’s time to work together Every election you hear people calling for change. What that change is may change from election to election as do the key issues. No matter how you look at it, big change is coming to Grand Forks city council. With a new mayor and four new councilors elected to office, there will be plenty of fresh faces around the council table starting Dec. 1. The people have spoken and the great thing about a democracy is that they are never wrong. Votes don’t lie. Each voter may have a different reason for how they voted, but in the end each vote is worth one and the candidate(s) with the most votes win. It will certainly be a steep learning curve for some, but with the guidance of an experienced staff at the city, there is no doubt this group of councillors will be up to snuff in no time. We’ve seen a great deal of division in our city over this election and particularly regarding the water meter issue. Was it just sprung on us? Can they enter our homes at anytime? Will it cause cancer? City councils are in charge of making many, many important decisions that help guide the city. This is not Survivor where a “clique” can come together and “vote off” someone they don’t like. All of council has to work together for a common goal. They will have to make tough decisions that won’t be popular whether it is to raise taxes or to install meters. By working together a council can accomplish many great things.

MILTON ORRIS When growing up in Grand Forks Armistice Day/Remembrance Day as it became, was always regarded as a very important day in the year, and as a student you were expected to participate. It was a difficult, sad and moving time as we marched from the Legion Hall to the cenotaph at that time outside the Post Office (where it still stands, now outside City Hall). There were still numerous veterans from the First World War who led the marching group, who laid many wreaths in honour of the many dead from their war, and the slowly growing number from Grand Forks who died in the Second World War. Their names, not

yet engraved on the cenotaph, were read out during the ceremony. There were prayers, often a speech, the reading of In Flanders Fields, the laying of the wreaths from almost every organization in Grand Forks—and then the playing of Taps after two or three minutes of silence, at 11 a.m. Taps was for several years played by Malcolm Scott, which always brought tears to the eyes of those who were there at the ceremony. The march to the cenotaph was lead by the Grand Forks City Band that I had joined when I as in Grade 7 to play the alto horn, gradually graduating to the French horn and finally the trumpet. It was a participation that still brings strong memories and a sense of pride to me. As I said, it began as a sad day as we remembered and paid homage to many of those who were comrades, friends, family and the sons of those

parents we knew. However it was also a day of celebration. After we marched the few short blocks to the Legion Hall, we broke into two groups. The veterans headed upstairs for the party that went on for the rest of the day and into the evening, their way of remembering both the losses and the gratefulness they had survived the war. The rest of us, many of the older students headed downstairs to the party. Drinks, snacks and live music to dance to were part of the celebration that lasted through the afternoon. In fact, for me in Grade 7 it was my first dancing experience. I think it was Doreen Mitchell who took me by the hand out onto the dance floor and taught me the two-step (a rarely seen way of dancing these days!). So much fun, and forever etched the celebration aspect of Remembrance Day in my mind. After 1945 the parade of veterans grew much younger

as Second World War servicemen returned and the First World War survivors gradually left us. These days of Remembrance made a very deep impression on me. Whether it was seeing the family of the sons who died during the Second World War putting their wreaths on the cenotaph, weeping as they did so, or the proudly marching veterans keeping in step as they moved along, many of them wearing their medals and ribbons on their blue blazer jackets, or the many, many citizens of Grand Forks who showed up each year to honour those who had died for their country. We must never lose our sense of gratitude and loss of all those who 96 to 100 years ago this year (1914 to 1918) died in the First World War, and those who died 73 to 78 years ago (1939 to 1945) in the Second World War. You are forever honoured.

Keeping recreation local an asset

Editor, The Gazette: The Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill has provided a valuable recreational asset for Boundary residents since 1969. During the run-up to the November 15 election, the Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society board (PMASS) wants to ask the community and our elected officials: “How much value do we place upon this little gem right in our own back yard?” Over the years, the increasing costs of operations and maintaining equipment to the stringent safety requirements of the industry have risen substantially. With an average annual operating loss of $60,000, Phoenix Mountain has been surviving only with the support of gaming funds from the B.C. government. In 2013, PMASS learned that we were not eligible for a gaming grant. We appealed to and are grateful to Boundary businesses and individuals who raised the money needed to meet that shortfall. In talks with the City of Grand Forks and the RDKB directors, Phoenix Mountain is close to consideration as a line item on their annual budgets. We are off to a good start with a commitment of $20,000 annually from the City of Grand Forks and Area D Recreation Commission and are currently in discussion with Grand Forks and Area D, the home of most of our patrons, to secure additional funding commitments. Areas C & E, and Greenwood have already made contributions to Phoenix for the current 201415 year and we are optimistic this support will continue. We received a Gaming Grant of $41,000 for the 2014-15 operating year. However, it is less than previous years, and comes with stringent regulations for fund use. We were also advised to expect lower levels of support in future years.

Phoenix’s future viability is clearly dependent upon public support. Realizing that Gaming Funds are not the answer, we have been asking for many years that the City of Grand Forks and RDKB Area D enter into a service contract with Phoenix Mountain to provide stable tax-based operational funding for the ski hill. A very strong indication of the community support for this initiative is the fact that donations from individuals and businesses covered our loss of Gaming Funds last season. Phoenix is deserving of tax-based funding as a recreational facility in the area. Phoenix provides seasonal employment for 30 full- and part-time workers and contributes approximately $200,000 annually to the local economy in the short space of four months. We introduce hundreds of kids every year to the sports of skiing and snowboarding through our subsidized school program, and provide a great family-focused recreational opportunity. Our need is not for fundraising projects to generate a few thousand dollars, but for a stable annual source of funds of about $60,000 to supply 25 per cent of our annual operations budget. The Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society plans to work with elected officials to build a plan to ensure stable and viable funding from local government for the Ski Hill. We would request you consider asking your future electoral candidates where they stand on the issue of locally supported government funding for Phoenix Mountain and their view of the importance of this recreational resource. Keeping recreation local encourages local spending and is a true Boundary asset! Dylan Zorn, President, Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society

Editor, The Gazette: While it was a welcome sight to see the photo of women in the Boundary being acknowledged by the Boundary Women’s Coalition for their outstanding achievements (Women honoured – Grand Forks Gazette, Nov. 12), I was taken aback by the caption patronizingly describing them as “25 lovely ladies.” Such a description, regardless of the writer’s gender, is typical of the male dominated society

and conditioning we live in, and basically undermines real respect for women’s work and their striving for equality in this very much unequal world. Would this same description be applied to, say, “25 lovely men” and their achievements? I think not! Rosemary Phillips, Christina Lake, BC

2nd Annual

Christmas Market Featuring some Farmers Market Vendor’s and more

Legion Hall Grand Forks, BC

Resident involvement is critical By 12:30 on Sunday, Nov. 16, the election signs that lined Highway #3 (Central Avenue) for several blocks had disappeared as if by magic. The extra large one that stood in the vacant lot once occupied by the Grand Forks Hotel proved to be a challenge for the couple who removed it, but it too was eventually whisked away. Rousing And so it is with civic elections. the Rabble Candidates declare their intentions ROY RONAGHAN and begin their campaigns by erecting signs, distributing brochures and displaying posters. The eventually submit written statements, attend a forum and hold drop-in session all in an effort to recruit voters. On polling day, voters choose the people they think are most likely to represent their views and deal with their issues at council meetings. What the residents of Grand Forks witnessed during the campaign was duplicated in communities across the province. Signs, posters and brochures are the visual part of the drama and in the end they disappear perhaps to be resurrected in a future campaign. Forums are popular because they can be somewhat entertaining but they fall short in that they don’t provide much more information than that the candidate can speak in public. During this election Facebook discussions were popular. The question on the minds of voters now is how the chosen few will govern. What style will they choose? Will they build on what the outgoing council accomplished or will they move to negate those accomplishments? Will they lead the city in a new direction? How will they garner the views of residents on major issues? Will referenda be commonplace? It is to be expected that the atmosphere in council chambers will be different from what it was during the last three years. Council meetings will be different with a novice in the mayor’s chair and four new councillors. Only with time will residents know whether the mayor elect can get the support of all councillors to fulfill his promise to lead the city like his business, “into a new era of success with a vision for the future.” If the mayor and each of the councillors want to pursue their individual agendas what will they accomplish? Mayor elect Frank Konrad wants to begin work on the infrastructure, a project that will cost an estimated $127 million, and possibly reverse the decision on water meters. Julia Butler wants the council to “take their orders from the people.” Neil Krog wants to build on the good work of the outgoing council. Christine Thompson wants to address a number of issues of concern from the use of the surplus generated by the electric utility to the construction of sidewalks. Michael Wirishagin wants to work on the infrastructure, taxation, and the attraction of businesses to the city in his statement. Chris Hammet’s goal is to promote economic growth. Colleen Ross has a long list of objectives related mostly to food security in the region. Fortunately for city residents, the staff at city hall does not change at election time. City staff provide the continuity that is needed to keep the city running smoothly. Services are not put on hold while councillors become familiar with their roles and responsibilities. The city can boast about having a strong staff and that bodes well for everyone over the next four years. A complaint about the behaviour of city council over the past year was that it was not listening to residents. How will the new council handle such strong admonishment? How will it avoid the complication of slowing down the decision-making process? Does the election of a new council mean that residents can now relax and turn their attention elsewhere? Certainly not! They must use every opportunity available to be involved in the work of city council, Imagine what might happen if they choose not to.

Thank You

to the editor

Reminder: listen to the people Editor, The Gazette: The election is over, the results are in and I am reminded of the late Herb Gray (1931-2014). Herb was a Liberal politician. During his long career he was appointed deputy prime minister and also deputy house leader. Mr. Gray was elected and re-elected over and over a total of eight times in a row. When asked the secret to his election success,

Herb simply replied, “I listened to the people.” Herb Gray serves as a reminder to those former councillors and mayor defeated this election and as a warning to those newly elected councillors and mayor: to retain power and keep your job, “listen to the people,” that’s why we the people pay your salaries. David Janzen, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: We have a community quite bursting with volunteers and it is a lovely thing! And we have a number of people in our area without an address, a bedroom or kitchen to call home. We are not to ask what has brought them to this place, but we know it is a time of hardship. We have a beautifully strong base of volunteers in Grand Forks for our BETHS Cold

Weather Shelter, but we need more, for we do not wish to burn out those who give 12-hour overnight shifts a couple of times a month. If you can see to step into this compassionate position, please either connect with Andre at Whispers of Hope, or call myself at 250-442-3092 or Steve at 443-9236. Thank you. Tracey Garvin, Grand Forks

The Grand Forks Farmers’ Market vendors and board would like to “shout out” a huge thank you to each and every visitor that stopped in to support the growing, creating and baking selection that we offer every season May through October. Many familiar vendors greeted our customers this season, along with some new faces. The line-up of produce and product that is available was greatly expanded, thanks to the hard work of everyone. It’s a pleasure to be able to offer our patrons a richly rewarding experience on those great sunny Boundary days. Vendors and residents had a great season. This year’s weather was utterly amazing, allowing our farmers a bounty of produce locally grown right here in Grand Forks! The unusually warm fall kept the market well supported into the later weeks of October. Many

gardens in the areas provided produce into the second week of November—how amazing is that? This week’s cold snap is certain to announce the arrival of winter. So? Keep warm and enjoy the season! Before you know it the snow is melting and you’re fondly sorting your seed packets for the 2015 planting. Vendors are still busy, so keep an eye out at the local Christmas/holiday community sales for familiar faces that meet and great you every Tuesday and Friday 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. during the outdoor market season at Gyro Park The Grand Forks Farmers’ Market is looking forward to seeing you at Gyro Park next year, beginning May 29. Sol Alhstraum, Grand Forks Farmers’ Market representative

I would like to thank the citizens of Grand Forks for taking such a keen interest in this year’s election. I value the trust you have placed in me to represent you and our beautiful valley. Please call me with any questions you may have 250-442-8436.

‘Winter’s night’ concert soon SHEILA DOBIE

Submitted to the Gazette

The weather outside is frightful, and those silver bells are about to ding dong ding! Throw some chestnuts on the open fire and come hear the Grand Forks Choral Society sing to you “Songs for a Winter’s Night.” This will be a concert you will not want to miss. It is the perfect start to the winter season’s celebrations and will immerse you in musical magic fit for anyone’s version of a harmonious Christmas time. Mark the dates: Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. Both concerts will be at the GFSS auditorium. Nancy Gillmor, president of the Grand Forks Choral Society (GFCS), describes this annual concert. “We want to make music accessible and affordable for everyone. We believe that $10 a seat makes that possible for anyone to experience a choral concert.”

Is your pet a star in your household? Make your pet a star in The Gazette! This week’s star is LADY!

Tickets are the same in advance and at the door. Each concert is followed by a reception, hosted by the choir members offering sensational goodies and hot drinks. Choir director Kirsten Nicolson leads this choir AND the new junior choir, which will also be performing in this coming concert. This will be the first concert for this new youth choir (Grade 4-6) of inspired young voices. Nicole Fraser once again is the accomplished pianist, providing beautiful accompaniment to the pieces. Programs will be available in the Grand Forks Gazette in the Wednesday, Nov. 26 issue leading up to the week of the concerts. So if you need a program for the evening, take it from your Gazette in advance before you come. Gillmor continues, “Come and experience a diverse evening of music that will lift and transform you into the season of hope, celebration and giving.” You can visit the choir’s website— www.grandforkschoralsociety.ca

Watch for signs indicating that active hauling is in progress and drive with extra caution on these roads, being sure to travel on the right side of the road. Yield to oncoming industrial traffic. If you have a two way radio, monitor the posted radio frequency, and follow directions outlined on the “haul road protocol” signs that are located at the start of the road. If you are uncertain of the procedure, ask for an explanation of the radio protocol and for assistance on how best to proceed. Industrial users are very concerned with public safety and will be glad to help you travel safely. The CorporaTion of The CiTy of Grand forks

Water meter installation status report The City of Grand Forks would like to clarify the status of the water meter project. The contract with Neptune is underway and nearing completion. A final call has been mailed to homeowners who have not had or made arrangements to have the meter installed. The water meter installation program began in September of 2014 with an anticipated completion date for mid-December for internal installations. Pit installations are to be completed in early to mid-2015, and the decision to have Neptune install the pit meters has not been finalized. The contract was awarded on June 12th, 2014. Currently, we have approximately 280 internal installations that still need to be completed. As part of the contract with Neptune, there was a commitment to make 3 contacts with the homeowner to perform the installation. Most homeowners did not require a third request. However, last week as per the schedule from Neptune, and in order to meet their contractual obligations, a third request was sent to approximately 280 homeowners requesting that they book an appointment for installation. The letter requests the meter be installed prior to the December 15th, 2014 timeline and is without cost to the homeowner as per Bylaw No. 1973. Water Regulation Bylaw No. 1973 calls for all installations to be completed by July of 2015, allowing some flexibility to homeowners that were unable to have the installations completed and to allow for the installation of pit meters. In the event there are extenuating circumstances where a penalty may not be appropriate, there will be a decision of Council and penalties will be at the discretion of Council as a whole. In closing, the final call for installations will ensure the City and Neptune have met their contractual obligations. The City apologizes for any confusion this notice may have caused. Konrad

Continued from page A1

credited in the paper. “That was my only fear when that incident happened which was unfair and cruel on the part of the media,” he said. Although a special issue came out on the Friday before the election, Konrad said it was too late. “I had lost possibly all the votes from the advance poll on Wednesday,” he said. Konrad said he believes that honesty and integrity won out in the end. “I was very excited when I won because to me I really believe that goodness and decency triumphs over all,” he said. Konrad said he is prepared to work with the new council and all the new faces. “It’s not up to me to decide on the new council,” he said. “I would be able to work with anybody. I have no problems. I have worked on my successful business with so many employees and so many citizens. I love the council I have because no matter who I had I could work with them.” Konrad said it is important for the new council to work together from the get go. “We have to work together,” he said. “What would we accomplish if we worked in dissent. We would never be able to accomplish any goals that the council or I have in mind for the citizens of the city. That’s what it’s all about. It’s all about the citizens. I don’t have to campaign any more. I’m elected. I’m still confirming and reaffirming my position: it’s for the citizens. They’re the ones that went to the polls and wanted change. They indicated who they wanted be it councillors or mayor. Again, I feel honoured they chose me and I will never betray their trust.” Infrastructure Konrad said that fixing the infrastructure in Grand Forks will require long range planning and will not happen over night. “We can attempt and tackle it one step at a time,” he said. “We don’t have to approach the whole project in one endeavour. We can do it slowly area by area. We have the engineering reports even if they are five years old plus.” Konrad said they will need to approach upper levels of government for funding for the infrastructure projects “but we will not use the ploy as we will install water meters as the trade off so we get these grants.” “We will try other endeavours to attain these grants,” he said. “Should we not then we will poll the citizens and have their opinions. If they deem it necessary then we do it through taxation. But that will all be up to the citizens.” Water meters Konrad reiterated that he would like to see a moratorium on the water meter installation project in the City. “I will never reverse my stand on the issue that I put in my platform,” he said. “Given approval with council, we will and I will put a moratorium on the water meter issue until further discussion with the

Grand Forks Gazette

public. Which should have been done in the first place. A petition of that magnitude, which was issued in February, should not ever have been ignored. That’s the biggest betrayal of the citizens that I can think of.” Konrad said he will have to get used to the machinations of council before deciding further action such as removal of the meters. “All of these issues must be looked at very stringently first and then we will take our path to whatever direction it takes us,” he said. “Should it be removal? Maybe they’ll be left if the money can’t be re-cooped. There are so many issues that can’t be discussed. They become non-functional is another option. To say we’re going to remove them is way beyond the scope of my ability to comment on.” Economic development Konrad said he has several ideas for improving the downtown core such as downsizing the units and possibly splitting them into smaller units. “Bringing it a hotel which was always my idea since the beginning of my campaign,” he said. “It is coincidental it appears on page 10 of the paper that they have been approached for a hotel project. It just amazes me how politics works. But I’ve always advocated bringing in a big chain into here which has already been attempted once before my Extra Foods.” Konrad said he believes these ideas will translate in generating tax gains to help lighten the load for citizens. Open for business “I disagree totally on selling off properties,” he said. “If properties are going to be sold off they should be sold off with a guarantee from the people coming in to take these properties over they should give us a guarantee for X number of years so that they won’t just buy these properties and then put a hold on the project and then we’ve lost a valuable asset to our city.” Konrad said there are many ways in business to handle property management. “Selling off land – sure we fill the city coffers – but once it’s gone, it’s gone and we can’t recoop that,” he said. “Land is a strong asset and shouldn’t be sold off at a whim.” Transparency Konrad believes there should be much more transparency at City Hall. He is looking at a possible mayor’s day on Thursday afternoon where the public can come by and discuss issues. “I’ve said before, my door will always be open,” he said. “But some people are intimidated by that. So we’ll do it the other way. Have an open door on a Thursday and people can try it out.” Konrad hopes the mayor’s day will lead to a closer knit community, “where their expressions of interest are portrayed, their ideas are portrayed, their visions are portrayed.” Konrad said he expects to be in the office at City Hall near full-time. “There are so many issues I feel need addressing,” he said. “I want to be there to show that transparency to the people, to be able to listen to them, and deal with issues that are important.”

Extravaganza! There were several great performances on stage at the GFSS Auditorium on Nov. 13 for the Moulin Rouge Dance Extravaganza. The event was MC’d by the entertaining Dean Engen as Mr. Zedler and featured a variety of performances from Irish dancing (top right performing improvisation) to belly dancing to Zumba (right performing Junto Los Dos) and Jazzercise by local dance groups plus, of course, the featured can can dancing from Les Folles Jambelles (above performing Big Spender) and the visiting Boomtown Garter Girls from Rossland.

Food banks play a critical role in delivering food to those who need it most. Communities around the country rely on the residents to help keep the food banks full. This time of the year food banks get busier because of the colder weather. Our local business helps to provide opportunities to donate at several different locations down town. GFREC offers two days at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre for participants to donate to the Food Bank. Nov. 24 and 25 are scheduled food bank days.

Any loss is tough, but losing in overtime after being up by a pair heading into the third period is really tough. The Grand Forks Border Bruins had a commanding 3-1 lead over Kamloops going into the third period on goals from Dexter Robinson, Michael Rand, Kyle Doak and Tucker Brown. Unfortunately, the team gave up goals to Addison Bazian at 7:34 and the killer by Keaton Gordon with only five seconds left in regulation to go to overtime. Kyle Lohmann got the game winner for the

Storm at 2:42 of OT. “We changed up our defensive play quite a bit so we could play a bit more defensively and cut down our goals against,” said head coach and general manager Brad Snyder, “but it seemed like in doing that we lost a lot of our offense. Even though we gave up a lot of shots they were low quality shots from the outside.” Jacob Mullen was strong between the pipes for the Bruins stopping 54 out of 58 shots and getting the team’s game star. “I thought our goaltender Jake Mullen played extremely well,” said Snyder. “The defence moved the puck pretty well but we need to create more offence off of that.” Snyder said the loss was a tough one for the players. “It was one of those things,” he said. “The kids deserved a better fate than what they got. It is what it is. The defence was a lot better so we’re quite happy with that. We’ll continue on from here.” The Bruins sit in last place in the Neil Murdoch division with a 7-13-1 record for a total of 16 points. GF is 11 points back of Spokane for the final play-off spot. Grand Forks has a tough run to the end of the month with five games in 10 days against interdivision rivals. Tonight (Nov. 19) the Bruins travel to Nelson to take on the division leading Leafs. On the weekend, GF has a home and home with Castlegar. On Friday, the teams play in Grand Forks. Saturday, they face off in Castlegar.

Newton moves up to Junior A The Bruins top scorer Max Newton has moved up to Junior A after leading the team with 34 points in 21 games. Newton was picked up by the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCJHL where he will be reunited with former Bruins coach Nick Deschenes. “He’s gone to Trail so we’ve lost our top scorer,” said Snyder, “but we’re a development team. We helped develop Max and now he’s moved on. We wish him the best with Trail. We hope he does as good a job with them as he did with us.”

Gallery hosts artisan faire SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

There’s no show like it anywhere in the area. It’s an intimate part of Boundary culture. On Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 29, 16 artisans converge at the historic courthouse for the 8th Annual Artisan Christmas Faire. Surrounded by stained glass, wood and the arts, these artisans will bring their best work from the last 12 months, to give you a chance to browse their work, and shop for your holiday gift giving. You’ll browse beautiful, handmade artisan crafts, while listening to beautiful seasonal music. Or have a seat in the café, right in the gallery, and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. Jennifer and Becky Shields will be selling baked goods, snacks. Bring a friend and enjoy a distinctive day of holiday magic at gallery 2. When you visit gallery 2 on Nov. 28 and 29, you’ll browse the artists on both floors—this year’s show sold out by October and it’s full to capacity. This year you just might leave the gallery with more artwork than you planned. Back by popular demand when you make a purchase from one of the artisans or from the gallery gift shop, you’ll receive a draw ticket. Put one part of the ticket in the draw for the hour, and you enter for a chance to win the door prize—your pick of any of the artisan crafts offered for the draw. You’ll have a chance to win every hour, so be sure and stick around and enjoy the show and come back on Saturday. Florence Strukoff

October 17, 1931 – November 11, 2014

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved Mom, Baba, and friend who passed away at the age of 83. Born in Grand Forks, she attended school here and graduated in 1949. Florence married George W. “Kelly” Strukoff on February 16, 1952 and they spent their lives raising their family in Grand Forks. She and Kelly had great memories over the years of camping, fishing, snowmobiling, and bowling with their friends. She loved spending many summer afternoons swimming at her favourite beach. Her Wednesday morning coffee gang was very special to her, as these ladies have continued this tradition from the 1950s to present day. Florence enjoyed her card playing groups and always looked forward to a casino trip. Her positive outlook, courageous spirit, and unwavering strength were always admired. She loved to laugh and find the humour in any situation. She was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Annie Shlakoff, husband Kelly, sister Elizabeth (Albert Waite), brothers Mike and Jack, mother and father in law Dasha and William Strukoff, sister and brother in law Ann and Nick Strukoff, nephew Joe Strukoff, and great-grandniece Maya Sookochoff. She will be deeply missed by daughter Lorraine and husband Bill Wright, son Bob “Kelly” and wife May, grandchildren Kim and Kelley Wright, Matthew Strukoff and Becki Cheveldave, great-granddaughters Jessica Wright, Melissa Faulkner, Chelane Jones, Hadley Switzer, and great-great-grandson Nixon Henderson, as well as brother- and sister-in-law Mike and Helen Strukoff, nieces and nephews, friends, and her honorary sister and lifelong friend Elsie Stoochnoff. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

Frieda (Petko/Paetkau) Fast JANUARY 16, 1918 - NOVEMBER 6, 2014

Frieda (Petko/Paetkau) Fast went to her heavenly home on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Chilliwack General Hospital. She was 96 years old. The last of six children, Frieda was born on January 16, 1918 in Neu (New) Chortiza in the Baratova region of the Ukraine to Heinrich Paetkau and Helena (nee Klippenstein) Paetkau. Always a precocious child, at the age of 14, she was sent to Odessa on the Black Sea for her teacher training. On November 28, 1939 she married Stefan (Stepan) Minaev, who, as a widower, brought a daughter, Galya (Annie), to their union. They subsequently had 3 children: Larissa (Lora, 1940), Walter (1945) and Magdalene (Maggie, 1949). Frieda and Stefan fled the Ukraine with their 2 girls, Annie & Lora, in October 1943; they were part of The Great Trek in which thousands of Mennonites fled the Ukraine to escape political and religious persecution. The family ended up in Gronau, Germany, in a refugee camp run by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Sponsored through the MCC, they immigrated to Canada in May of 1950. Immediately after their arrival in Canada, they made their way to Carrot River, Saskatchewan and worked to repay the price of their passage. Once that year of enormous hardship was fulfilled, they moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Both Frieda and Stefan were trained as teachers and were fluent in a number of languages, one of which was Russian. In 1953 they found employment in Grand Forks, B.C. as Russian language teachers to the children of the Doukhobors, a religious sect, who had settled there in large numbers. Both Frieda and Stefan became a part of the Grand Forks community and were well-respected. During her Grand Forks years, Frieda attended the Gospel Chapel with her children and became a valued member of that church community. Frieda was widowed in 1973; she remained in Grand Forks, not moving to Sardis, B.C. until her marriage to Henry Fast on August 30, 1975. Henry died in February of 1981. In April 2001 , Frieda moved into her apartment on Knight Road. There she made many friends, was active in the Greendale Mennonite church (now called River of Life Church), was an active member of the Canadian Bible Society as well as serving as a correspondent for the Mennonite paper Der Bote. Because of her skill in the German and Russian languages, her services as a translator were sought after. She was a voracious reader throughout her life. She nurtured that passion in all of her children and was a constant example of the importance of education. Frieda never lost her passion
