Coulsons upgrade their firefighting fleet KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Coulson Aviation USA— the American operating arm of the Port Albernibased Coulson Group of Companies—showed off their newest acquisition at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport on Sunday, Nov. 16. The C-130 Hercules was on display for the public from 1-3 p.m. that afternoon and will be flown to Australia on Dec. 3. The planes are unique because Coulson Aviation USA hold a patent on the water holding tanks. According to Britt – Wayne Coulson, the C-130 on display holds 3,500 gallons and another modified firefighting C-130 tanker under construction will hold 4,000 gallons. “Our second C-130 is getting that [4,000 gallon] tank installed right now in Singapore,” said Britt, adding that the plane will come back to the Alberni Valley Regional Airport in February. While the Coulsons’ goal is to use the C-130s as water tankers, the planes have removable tanks should they be needed for other purposes. “If there was a requirement for somebody to just move freight or cargo... the tank wheels bolt on and then in about half an hour for two or three guys the tank just rolls right back down the ramp and you’re back to a fully unrestricted C-130. We’re the only ones in the world with that.” While the C-130 drew a huge crowd, the fate of the biggest aviation attraction in the Alberni Valley hasn’t yet been decided.
Wayne Coulson said that earlier on they had tried to trade the Hawaii Mars waterbomber for the C-130. “We tried, we were working with the federal government to see if we would be able to do that but it didn’t go very far.” The trade is complicated by the C-130s being American ex-military planes. “It’s probably not in the realm of possibility,” he said, adding that the planes’ ex-military status “makes them a lot harder to bring into the country. We’re a U.S. registered aircraft and we don’t have registration for it in Canada, so I couldn’t Coulson operate this aircraft in Canada but I could in the United States or Australia.” As far as other initiatives to keep the Hawaii Mars in Alberni, Wayne hasn’t seen many promising ideas. “There was a movement to keep [the Hawaii Mars] in Alberni but of course the challenge there is the cost of keeping it and where do you put it and all those things.” Even if the community was able to purchase the plane and had a place to display it, upkeep would be another challenge. “Because of its age and it’s got fabric flight surfaces a lot of damage can happen. Keeping the aircraft in a serviceable state where it’s not going to deteriorate too bad is the key.” While the Hawaii Mars awaits a decision, the Philippine Mars has already been acquired by a Florida museum and will be flown down there sometime in March or April. “We’ll have a celebration before we turn it loose.”

New city council pushes teamwork KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
With a new mayor and four new councillors there’s been quite a shakeup at city hall after the Nov. 15 municipal election. Former Alberni District Secondary School principal Mike Ruttan beat out former mayor John Douglas with 1891 votes compared to Douglas’ 1460. Former city councillor Cindy Solda came in third with 874 votes, followed by Kevin Wright with 776, former councillor Hira Chopra with 492, Maurice Chopin with 414 and Jacques Savard with 80. The new city council will start their term with strong support from residents, with the top four new councillors getting more votes each than any of the mayoral

People are definitely looking for a change, but not completely because we do have two returning councillors. But I think it’s a good result; a balanced result.” Ruttan said he is confident the new group will be able to work together,

Mayor-elect hits the ground running KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
From high school principal to Port Alberni’s mayor-elect, Mike Ruttan is used to taking the lead. Ruttan won the mayoralty race on Saturday, replacing incumbent John Douglas, who had the second highest number of votes. “First and foremost there’s some training that has to occur before we even start with council meetings...this is how council needs to conduct itself, this is how we are going to work together,” Ruttan said. Teamwork proved to be a challenge for the past council, whose term was marked by disagreements in the council chambers. That’s something Ruttan isn’t going to tolerate. “Once we have these discussions and come to agreements, whether

What if speeders can be part of some tourist experience? Maybe speeders from McLean Mill to Coombs.” Ruttan feels that speeders could be Port Alberni’s equivalent of Coombs’ goats on the roof, something to put the city on the map. But even without the speeders, Ruttan said that “we do have some things that we can pull together to make an incredible experience for people. Yes, we have North Port, yes we have South Port and we can pull all those things together if we can persuade people to stop.” He sees Canal Beach as a “community asset” that could help with that, while the proposed coal port would detract from it as well as degrade Port Alberni’s already suffering infrastructure further. “There’s no business case for coal.”

Finding the balance between keeping a cap on city spending while dealing with that deficit will be a delicate balance for the new mayor and council. However, Ruttan thinks there are opportunities to cut spending. “We have models of expenditures for things that are seen as extravagant compared to other cities our size,” including the amount of money spent on policing. “The city can make some of those difficult but necessary choices from time to time.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews
No new crossing From / A7
Voters in Port Alberni were also eligible to vote on whether or not they wanted a 10th Avenue crossing, but they turned it down by nearly 1,000 votes (3,389 against and 2,388 in favour). Regional district voters kept most of their incumbents, with John McNabb beating Patty Edwards to retain his seat in Beaver Creek and Lucas Banton beating Dennis Dalla-Vicenza in Cherry Creek. In Bamfield, Keith Wyton beat out incumbent Eric Geall. Voters in both the city and the regional district also had the opportunity to vote on whether or not they wanted to switch the Sproat Lake Marine Patrol to a service that all voters in the regional district and city would pay into rather than a grant based service. 73.5 per cent of voters voted in favour of establishing the service. reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews

Newly elected. Jane Jones joins the SD70 board.

The board of trustees for School District 70 has a hard year of decisions ahead, and having the experience of most of the incumbents returning will help, says Larry Ransom. Ransom, Pam Craig, Rosemarie Buchanan, Pat Dahlquist and John Bennie were all re-elected. Jane Jones will be the new voice on the board, replacing Gaelle Frey. “It is important that we have experience on the board,” Ransom said once the results were announced at the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District office in Port Alberni. “All the incumbents are aware of the issues. We’ll have some full discussions and work on improving communication throughout our district, and work with the media on improving communication with the public.” Jones said being the only new face on the board is not too intimidating. As a member of the North Island College board “I feel very comfortable presenting ideas as well as dealing with the board.” Jones is a member of the Tseshaht First Nation, and says she hopes to build communication between the school
district and First Nations communities. “I have been in education most of my life. I think I can bring some ideas from the First Nations and some communication from the First Nations communities,” she said. Jones added that one of the reasons she decided to run for school board is to make young people in the First Nations community aware that they can vote once they reach the age of majority. editor@albernivalleynews.com

The Hupacasath First Nation increased their presence in Port Alberni with a flag raising at Victoria Quay on Sunday, Nov. 16. The flag, which will complement the Welcome Figures already at Victoria Quay, is the first of five flags the Hupacasath plan to raise all around the Alberni Valley. According to Hupacasath chief councillor Steven Tatoosh, the flag is meant to let people know that “this is our area that we developed, just to show that we have a presence in the Alberni Valley.” The Hupacasath originally got the idea from the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce. “[They] invited us to put a flag up there along with the Canadian flag and the British Columbia flag and we took the opportunity to just let everybody know that we’re here to stay and that we have a presence in the Alberni Valley,” said Tatoosh.

Public must stay engaged What to do with school boards now? Saturday’s election results have brought Port Alberni a new mayor and a new mix of councillors, melding experienced incumbents with young councillors and fresh ideas. Whether you are happy with who won or not, this is the council that we now have, and it is up to us to support them as they step into their roles as municipal ‘Whether you new politicians, then keep are happy them accountable over with who won the next four years. This election campaign or not, this is saw the most public the council we engagement since 2002, now have...’ with 46.3 per cent of eligible voters casting their ballots. That’s a considerable sight more than the 29 per cent who voted in 2008, and 35 per cent who voted in 2011. The level of input on social media was at an all-time high, and aside from some high emotions—again on social media—we would agree with councillorelect Denis Sauvé, who said there was very little mud-slinging throughout the campaign. While there were only six council seats and one mayor’s chair to be filled, this city saw some impressive candidates who unfortunately didn’t make the cut— this time. Some brought solid, thoughtful platforms forward, and we encourage these people to remain committed to the community. They may not have been elected, but their voices were heard. We also hope the public remains engaged with city council, and speaks up for this community in a positive, forwardmoving manner. — Alberni Valley News

ICTORIA – The saddest manifestation of British Columbia’s modern democracy has produced its judgment, with the election of school trustees for the next four years. There are still independent, communityminded trustees, but mostly “boards of education” have become the neglected, exploited stepchild of B.C. politics. Teacher union locals and CUPE-dominated “labour councils” organize candidate forums and ask most of the questions, often to former teachers holding and seeking school board seats. Unions finance the campaigns of those who pledge to act as a bullhorn for constant demands for more provincial money, and instruct their members to vote for what should be called the Conflict of Interest slate.
This has been going on for so long in B.C. it is seen as normal. Trustees who most loudly plump for their union masters tend to win, thanks to low turnout. The public mostly doesn’t give a damn, since school property tax authority was centralized in Victoria many years ago, largely because of this special interest pressure. The classic case is in Coquitlam, where one could almost hear the theme from The Godfather as local CUPE boss Dave Ginter appeared before the board of education in February. He informed the elected trustees that their collective financial acumen wasn’t up to his standards and some of them would have to go this fall. “Obviously, the chore I have is to find new trustees,” Ginter clarified in an interview with the Tri-City News as
the union’s candidate selection machine stirred to life. Ginter seems to have made them an offer they couldn’t refuse on Saturday, with formerly union-blessed trustees turfed out in favour of a new group. Then there’s Vancouver Island, where the 1970s survived, at least until Saturday night. Cowichan school board got itself fired by the province in 2012 for refusing to submit a balanced budget. Two of the trustees who think the job is to flout the balanced budget rule and instead demand a “needs budget” ran again. They were joined on a slate by two others who apparently still believe the answer to every problem is to shout for “more government funding.” They didn’t get in, as voters appear to have
‘How about an appointed trustee for each of the 60 school districts?’

been unimpressed by seeing their school board replaced by a provinciallyappointed manager for two years. That brings up a modest proposal. How about an appointed trustee for each of the 60 school districts? School boards have lost authority over taxation, curriculum (another area of union social engineering pressure) and now labour relations. Do we really need them any more? After the 2013 B.C. election, the Christy Clark government wasted no time taking control of union bargaining on behalf of school districts. Trustees were pushed out of the bargaining agency, no longer trusted to represent taxpayers for that duty either. The puppet role of some school trustees was evident in the recent teacher strike. When the province opted to pay parents for the disruption, there was a chorus of protest from those supposedly elected to represent the interests of parents and taxpayers.

QUESTION of the week
!
To the Editor,
Yes – 24.2% No – 75.8% This week’s question: Are you satisfied with the results of Port Alberni’s municipal election?
Vote at: www.albernivalleynews.com See us also on Facebook.com
School boards will likely stick around School tax rates are now set by cabinet order, and the B.C. Liberal government is considering a move to regulate local industrial taxes. (This would presumably be to keep union-influenced municipalities from trying to get too many golden eggs from those liquefied natural gas plants.) their remake by amalgamating or eliminating school boards? Not likely. With a rare teacher settlement in place, trustees will have less incentive to grandstand. And their meetings may become something more than union beef sessions. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press newspapers. A Vancouver mother was not among the many extra thousands who stood at cenotaphs across the country on Remembrance Day, as she had just been killed by her mentally-ill son. He was in the headlines recently for beating his dog and tossing it into a dumpster, and it eventually died. Dog-lovers turned up at the courthouse for the man’s trial, incensed that the poor animal suffered such an awful death, and complained that the sentence of a couple month’s jail time did not fit the crime. The judge acknowledged the mental state of the man he sent to jail, but said he was no further threat as long as he took his anti-psychotic medications. His mother’s death proves the meds were not taken as prescribed. No doubt, most of those standing at the cenotaphs on Nov. 11 had the senseless death in Ottawa of Corporal Nathan Cirillo on their minds; his killer was another mentally-deranged man who had served
jail time while pleading for help with his drug addiction, and met his death in dramatic fashion in our parliament’s Centre Block. Ironically, the psychotic killer managed to galvanize a nation to attend cenotaph services remembering those killed in wars, just as Canada wages war against ISIS in Iraq costing upwards of $250,000 per day, and dropping bombs that cost about $40,000 each. Would that all those who recoil and react to these awful killings in Vancouver and Ottawa, be willing to galvanize together and insist that more government funds are devoted to treatment, care and rehabilitation of the mentally ill. Bernie Smith, Parksville
Beat cops not the answer To the Editor,
It’s highly questionable whether Surrey, or any other B.C municipality, can build an old-school type “beat”/street policing model to ostensibly “connect with residents”. Times have changed. What with modern cop-killing video
games, there is nowhere near the level of respect for authority as there was back in the days of stay-at-home moms. Law and order is not just about policing. With the greatest of respect for all the fantastic work police do (policing and social work!), beat-cops are not going to walk every neighbourhood where a resident may wake up to find their vehicle on blocks with the wheels gone. Most importantly, police resources don’t need to be further stretched to provide what would amount to a foot-patrol to keep panhandlers and drug-dealers from the doorsteps of politically supportive business and commerce. The bottom line is this: municipal governments in B.C. must step up and use their political power to lobby provincial and federal governments to pay better attention to social factors such as lack of liveable wages keeping pace with the cost of living, affordable housing, and increased mental health and drugaddiction resources, etc.

Our privacy’s on the line To the Editor,
Bill C-13 will soon get final reading in the Senate. If it passes it will become law and will allow the government to spy on us without a warrant. That means the government can spy on each and every individual and collect and store personal information in giant databases. Some will say, well, if you haven’t done anything wrong what do you have to worry about? I believe that an individual’s privacy is fundamental to a healthy democracy and allowing the government the right to do this is a slippery slope that can lead to the erosion of other basic rights. The Supreme Court recently ruled that warrantless government requests for private information are unconstitutional. Bill C-13 will allow the government to do exactly that, in defiance of our constitution. People must wake up and take some action by making their voices heard. I encourage Canadians to learn more about how we
can work together to safeguard our privacy. Douglas Sheffield, Bowser
TB silent, even deadlier To the Editor,
While the world watches in morbid fascination as Ebola burns through west Africa, there’s another, more patient killer that will claim far more victims. Unlike Ebola, tuberculosis takes its victims slowly, ensuring that on average a TB sufferer infects almost a dozen others before they are treated or die. Each year nine million people are newly infected with TB. These numbers dwarf the deaths by Ebola, the disease that has gripped the world with fear. Ebola is a new threat and certainly needs attention. But for years now Canada has been at the forefront of helping the world rid itself of the ancient plague of TB. Canada is the sole funder of TB REACH, and the time for funding renewal is here. Canada needs to pledge another 120 million dollars over five years so that TB REACH can continue. Sitting in the Dr’s office the other day I picked up the only magazine available to pass the time. It turned out to be a Golfing magazine. Flipping through the pages an article caught my eye - two golfers were talking and one was telling the other about a “mulligan”. He was telling his friend that this was not in the official rules but sometimes in a game between friends it was often practiced. If you have made a major goof or hit the ball into the woods, way off course, friends may allow you to try again. Remember he said to his friend this is not in the official rules but your particular group of friends may allow it. God gives us a “mulligan”. We can “do-over” some of our past mistakes, learning where we were wrong and doing better the next time. This does not mean that we will not make more mistakes. However, God gives us this wonderful gift. Through loving grace, we can be forgiven. As we look forward to the season of Advent and the rush to buy the perfect gifts. It is comforting to know that God’s gift of the “mulligan” or “grace” will remain with us always.

Injury forces Bulldog to retire BCHL: | Scott Cooke suffers concussion in first game with Bulldogs, never returns to the game of hockey. Promising forward Scott Cooke, who only played one game with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, has been forced to retire from hockey due to an injury suffered in his first game as a Bulldog. Cooke spent three full seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants and Moosejaw Warriors. The Bulldogs signed him in October and fans were looking forward to seeing him play at the Dogpound. But in his first game, on the road in Victoria, Cooke

suffered a concussion and has experienced reoccurring symptoms ever since, coaching staff noted in a press release.
Cooke remained with the team hoping to get back on the ice but unfortunately that didn’t happen. “It’s with great
sadness that my hockey career is over,” said Cooke in a statement. “I have played hockey since I was three years old. Although my time with the Bulldogs was brief, I loved playing here and will miss the players, organization, fans, and especially the game.” Cooke signed off with one final message to his teammates by saying, “Bring home a championship.” Cooke’s jersey will be hung in the Bulldogs dressing room for the remainder of the season as he begins
the next phase of his life by attending school in Kelowna in the new year. “The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to thank Scott for wanting to be a part of our family in the last year of his junior career and wish him all the success in the world in a healthy transition to life after junior hockey,” the team said in a statement. In another move this week, the Bulldogs have reassigned 1997born defenseman Josh Harvey to the Oceanside Generals of the VIJHL.
Black Sheep trip Comox Kickers on the road SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The Comox Valley Kickers will probably never count sheep again if they can’t fall asleep after the nightmare that was a Div. 1 men’s rugby loss to the Port Alberni Black Sheep last weekend. The Black Sheep won 47-12 in Comox, seeing tries—all converted by Neil Thurley—from six different players, Saturday. The Black Sheep
were ahead 33-0 at halftime, and there wasn’t much more to say, according to Port Alberni coach Jas Purewal. “Comox had to play a lot of defence,” he noted. After two seasons of playing Div. 1, the Kickers are back down in Div. 3. “Our first phase platform was top notch and the lineouts were [solid],” he said, which allowed Todd Daradics to create a lot of space for the players. Tries came from
Jack Rokotuiwakaya with two, and singles from Joe Kalugin, Josh Shannon, Ryan Turner, Ty Shannon and Thurley. “We were a little more structured than they were and it really showed,” Purewal said. “Our guys are playing better and better every week... the quality of rugby
the guys are starting to play is a step in the right direction.” The Sheep are at home to the Div. 1 Velox Valhallians on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. at the rugby pitch at the top of Argyle Street. Port Alberni lost a heartbreaker on the final play of the game to Velox earlier in the season, and will be
looking to avenge that loss. “We’re hoping to put a lot of pressure on them early on,” Purewal said. “I’m pretty excited, actually.” He added the Sheep have a strong bench and their fitness level is high, which will help as the first half of the season winds down.

WiL’s still Make Make-ing music after all these years
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Singer-songwriter WiL has chosen Char’s Landing to debut the video Make Make from his new CD.
LIVE MUSIC: | Qualicum Beach musician excited to release latest video. KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
WiL, a singersongwriter from Calgary who has relocated to Qualicum Beach, has done things a little bit differently for El Paseo, his fifth studio album. “For one, the entire record was funded by fans through FANPUSH,” WiL said. Fans contributed close to $11,000 for the project. He then spent close to nine months recording the album in Qualicum. “I got to do it locally with a friend of mine and it was really cool to be able to do it so close to home,”
Wil said, “because I’ve always ended up somewhere away from home...it’s pretty great to be able to do the entire record in my backyard.” Finding someone locally that WiL felt a connection with was key to the process and he found the perfect match in studio engineer, multi-instrumentalist and owner of Poplar Sound Studio, Jayme Langen. “It’s all about the individual that you work with and how the studio’s ultimately set up because there’s so many variations of different types of studios. Everybody for the most part considers their studio
to be a studio, but a studio can be a laptop or can be a professional recording studio with a half million dollars’ worth of gear.” Some of the tracks for El Paseo came from an ad campaign WiL had done for Travel Alberta, while others were demos he had come up with in his own studio. “A lot of the demos come from commercial work and a lot of them just stem from being demos ready for a record.” Having completed demos going into the process made for a different recording experience. “We basically did it one song at a time

instead of tracking an entire album every day.” When WiL first started his recording career 15 years ago, he came in far less prepared. “I’ve always had some form of a demo but never so involved and so complete... my very first album I don’t think I had anything other than an idea on a dictaphone.” Since then, WiL’s learned that being prepared makes for a smoother ride. “I think it helps a producer or an engineer when you can give them an entire idea of what you’re after versus walking in there saying ‘I have an idea for a song but I have no idea what I want it to sound like’.” Make Make remains true to WiL’s roots rocker sound—for now. That idea of what he wants his records to sound like has changed continuously over the years. “They’re always different, they always end up sounding different, they’re written differently.

for a piece of public art which will mark the 50th anniversary of the tsunami,” said YPAV executive member Cameron Oscienny. The YPAV have applied to the 2015 Arts District Grant Program, funded by the Arrowsmith Rotary Club through the Alberni Valley Wine Festival which took place on Sept. 20. In 2014, $8,500 in grants was made available to a variety of organizations including the Rollin Art Centre, Art Rave and the Capitol Theatre. “We are excited about the chance to co-fund a piece of public art which will commemorate the 1964 tsunami, will be produced by Shane Lloyd—a young local artist—will use local materials, and will add to the vibrancy of the Rotary Arts District and Uptown Port Alberni,” Oscienny said. The YPAV will also be hosting a special Movember event at the Westwind Pub on Nov. 30. Anyone interested in helping organize the event can e-mail youngprofessionalsav @gmail.com.
