Kay Heuer, of the Nanaimo Elks, left, and Dorothy Dool, of the Order of the Royal Purple, have few occasions left to don their club regalia. The women represent two of several fraternal orders in Nanaimo that have either folded or are winding down due to an inability to attract new members.

embers of a Nanaimo service club are hanging up their purple hats after more than 60 years in the Harbour City. It’s the end of an era for Nanaimo’s Order of the Royal Purple, which is dissolving this year after grappling with an aging membership and lack of new volunteers. The service club for women has met and volunteered since 1949.

They did bingos and bake sales, fashion shows and teas. They put up lights in Nob Hill park, created student bursaries and contributed to the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children. But the organization has also faced challenges, including getting new membership. And it’s not the only one. Organizations like the Elks and Odd Fellows have also seen a decrease in membership and difficulty replenishing the ranks – an issue that has some executives forecasting an end for other fraternal orders. “Everybody is getting too old, I think this is the problem,” said Dorothy Dool, 86, a Royal Purple

volunteer for three decades. “We are not getting new members and I don’t think any of the other organizations are getting new members either and you get to a certain age where you just can’t do it anymore, or [you] really don’t want to.” Dool said it’s hard to put into words how she feels about the end of the ladies’ group, which will meet until their membership winds up in December. The charter was surrendered in June. “It brings tears to my eyes when I think about the closing of the lodge because it’s really hard to give up something you’ve had for so many years,” she said. “It’s like losing a good friend.”

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has found Robert James Iverson guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Cheryl Lynn Sim. Sim’s body was found in a vacant lot near Barsby Park in late June 2010. Iverson was subsequently arrested and charged with firstdegree murder. While explaining his decision, Judge Robert Punnet said Sim and Iverson were part of a group consuming alcohol in the area. He said there was evidence to suggest Sim suffered head trauma. Both she and Iverson were homeless. Basil McCormick, Crown counsel, said the Crown was satisfied with Punnett’s decision. “Second-degree murder carries with it punishment of life imprisonment and a minimum parole ineligibility of 10 years,” McCormick said. “Crown has indicated that we’re seeking more than that and the judge has indicated that he wants a pre-sentence report.” Sentencing could take place in the new year, once the pre-sentence report comes back, he said, adding it will likely be a full day of sentencing. Iverson, who represented himself during trial, interrupted Punnett repeatedly while the judge rendered his decision, but according to Stephen Taylor, the court-appointed lawyer that ensures proceedings are fair, that wouldn’t have bearing on sentencing. “It wouldn’t affect the sentencing,” said Taylor. “People react negatively to their conviction and that’s not an uncommon thing. Courts understand that this process is emotional for all parties, in particular the accused when they’re convicted.” Sim was trying to turn her life around at the time of the murder, said Susan Strehlau, Sim’s sister. Strehlau said she was happy with the decision. She said she would feel relief after debriefing and calling her family. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Re-development plans proposed for former Nanaimo city hall annex By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

The dollar sale of the former city hall annex wasn’t the deal many thought it was, says Tectonica partner Darren Moss as the company prepares to move ahead with plans for a new five-storey building. Tectonica, a construction and project management company, has applied for a development permit to build a new five-storey residential and commercial complex at the site of the former city hall annex. Nanaimo city council agreed to sell the building to the company for a dollar in 2012 on the condition the seismically-unsafe building is upgraded or demolished within two years. With plans for a 32-unit condominium and commercial project, Mayor John Ruttan said he doesn’t regret the transfer. It also wasn’t the deal a lot of people thought it was, according to Moss, who calls the dollar price tag for the previouslyassessed $3.5-million property fairly mathematical and based on the cost of demolition. If things go the way they think, they will have gotten fair market value but they also absorb the risk of the tear-down, he said. “So it seems like a wonderful deal, but the cost of that covenant is very ... real,” he said. Tectonica saw the land officially transferred in January and plans to partially demolish the former municipal building by the end of 2015 if it moves ahead with construction. Its next move hinges on market activity. The current development permit proposal is for a 45,000-square-foot building on the corner of Wallace and Franklyn. It’s an “interesting spot,” with good exposure for commercial on the ground floor and views off the upper levels for residential, “so there’s a good possibility of that conversion being well received in the community,” said Moss, who can picture professional offices along Wallace Street and a restaurant or cafe on the corner. Ruttan said he is excited about the plan. The building has been derelict with no aesthetic value, but as a rebuild it will be an addition to the Old City Quarter and tax producing, the mayor said. The city purchased its former annex for less than $500,000 a decade before deciding to sell. The issue was a seismic review that showed the structure was at high risk for structural damage or partial collapse during a significant quake. A city press release says it required an estimated $6.2 million in upgrades. “I think in this way the end result will kind of justify it all by having a very, very highquality, upscale building there with a number of tenants and it will revitalize that area which really has been a little bit soft,” Ruttan said. The development permit is expected to go to council Monday (Nov. 24). news@nanaimobulletin.com

“I have close to 100 volunteers signed up, so far, this year and that’s just the beginning,” Seney said. Seney said this year’s goal is to top last year’s fundraising total and add more volunteers. Operation Red Nose started in Quebec in 1984 and now operates in 99 communities across Canada. More than 1 million volunteers have given safe rides to nearly 2 million people since the program began. Long-standing supporting organizations of the program include the RCMP and ICBC, which provides special insurance that covers the volunteers, clients and vehicles taking part in the sober ride program.

“It’s unlike any other program in that impaired drivers are removed from the road and I don’t think you can get, from a road safety perspective, any better than that,” said Caroline Robinson, ICBC spokeswoman. Across B.C. in 2013, 4,300 Operation Red Nose volunteers drove 7,800 people and their vehicles home safely. To arrange for a ride, please call the Operation Red Nose hot line at 250755-6969. From Nov. 28 until New Year’s Eve, Red Nose volunteers will get vehicle owners, their passengers and their vehicles home safely. The service is offered to drivers who feel unfit to drive for any reason, is confidential and costs just the price of a cash donation to the program. Jeanne Seney, program coordinator for Nanaimo, Lantzville and Ladysmith, said in 2013, 246 volunteers drove more than 1,100 people home safely over the 11 days the program operated over the holiday season in Nanaimo, which raised more than $15,000.

Society changed since orders established From /1

Nanaimo’s fraternal organizations have deep roots in the community and report an investment of thousands of dollars each year to help pay for hospital equipment to bursaries and hearing aids.

But with the struggle for members, executives with the Elks, Odd Fellows and Royal Purple agree more will face the question of closure. Deborah Munday, former Royal Purple treasurer, said younger people just

don’t join fraternal groups anymore as they’re too busy with their home lives. The organization saw membership drop from an estimated 100 to 27 over about 35 years. Nanaimo Elk Lodge president

Kay Heuer says it’s also a “totally different” society than when fraternal organizations were established. The Elks Lodge began 97 years ago for men only, a time when it was also easier to fundraise. By the late 1990s

they had about 150 members. Today they sit at 25, with a mean age of 72. “I really believe it’s just a matter of time before all the fraternal organizations are gone ... we are all struggling for membership,” she said. The Elks contribute about $12,000 annually into the community. She questions where money will come from once they are gone, but she also doesn’t see a way to save organizations. “We are all in our 70s or 80s and sure we want to keep on, but how much longer can we?” she said. Nanaimo’s Odd Fellows have been in the city for more than a century and by the 1950s, noble grand Sheldon Smith says they had more than 200 members. Today there are 14 and it has a hard time getting a quorum at meetings. It’s sister organization, the Rebekahs, have stopped meeting. Without interest in an organization, continuing to make it grow, “yeah, it’s got a life expectancy,” said Smith of his belief fraternal groups face an expiration date. Like a CD or record player, “some things pass and there’s no need for them anymore because they have been replaced by something else. In the situation like the Odd Fellows, our credo is to look after the sick – the government does that. To help the orphans – the government does that. To look after the widows – the government does that. In effect, we are becoming dinosaurs,” Smith said, adding the only thing they do is the fellowship. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Event planning program aims to reduce barriers

I

WomEN’S cENtrE promotes positive mental health. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

New provincial funding will help put event planning into the hands of Nanaimo families that have experienced trauma. The B.C. government has announced it will provide close to $189,000 to Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society for The Place, a budding program at the local women’s centre. According to a press release,

the dollars are part of $2.9 million distributed to 16 community-based projects that promote positive mental health in B.C. While the details of the program are still being worked out, the idea is to help families feeling isolated by experiences with trauma, as well as addictions and mental health issues, by getting them involved in event planning. Participants work together to build a cultural event, or series of cultural events through workshops and mentorship – something not often made available without a price attached, or without families facing a sense of stigma, says

Often people who are struggling are seen as recipients rather than as agents of change.

Lesley Clarke, executive director for the society’s Nanaimo Women’s Centre. “This program takes down those barriers,” said Clarke,

who believes the project will give people a sense they have something to give the community and be appreciated for. “Often people who are struggling are seen as recipients rather than as agents of change and I think to be healthy, people need to be appreciated for their capacity as well.” The new provincial funding will be spread out over three years and won’t cover the entire cost of The Place, which will be looking for a $20,000 annual top up in grants and financial and inkind donations, but Clarke said it’s a good base. “This money is not easy to

get and we are really pleased that we had the support that we needed and that there was the level of interest from participation to get to the point where it happened for us,” she said. For more information, or to be a participant with The Place, please call the Nanaimo Women’s Centre at 250-7530633. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Province reviews municipal election spending rules

Safety program earns top mark The city of Nanaimo earned top scores during an external audit of its safety program this year. The city scored 92 per cent on an audit of its eight-element workplace safety program, which “far exceeds” the passing mark of the b.c. Municipal safety association and worksafe b.c., a press release says. The city earned high points for areas like hazard identification and control, inspections and organizational commitment, but lost marks on investigating workplace incidents and program administration – like development of a strategic action plan to address deficiencies. andrew brooks, the city’s health and safety manager, said he’s “very pleased” with the safety audit results and that a strategic action plan will be created to address areas for improvement.

Woodstoves exchanged regional District of Nanaimo residents are being offered financial incentive to replace older, less environmentally friendly wood stoves with newer, cleaner burning models. The b.c. government has given the regional district $19,950 for the wood stove exchange Program, which will provide people with a $250 rebate off “any new certified domestic solid fuel burning device or high efficiency appliance, including gas, propane, pellet or electric stoves,” according to a provincial government press release.

Report outlines city sponsorship program By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

A new policy will give the city a single standard for cashing in on sponsorships. Nanaimo’s sponsorship committee has released a draft policy outlining how the city should tackle new partnerships. The budding document, still in the committee process, is considered to be a move toward a corporate sponsorship program and outlines principles and the roles of staff and council when it comes to approving third-party deals. It does not include guidelines for naming rights, although city staff have pitched a separate naming rights and advertising policy as a next step. According to Philip Cooper, city communications manager, there isn’t

This provides a single standard for all city departments to look at.

currently a policy like this and without one, the city runs into the potential of having an “ad hoc approach” by different parts of the organization. “This provides a single standard for all city departments to look at and of course, it will have, once approved, the backing of council,” he said. The new policy outlines responsibilities and principles when it comes to sponsorship agreements.

A sponsorship coordinator, for example, would be the department contact and able to approve up to $5,000, while department heads could approve up to $75,000. Anything higher would be a decision of council. The policy also says the city won’t enter into deals when organizations profit from the sale or distribution of dangerous goods, or when there’s evidence of unlawful action against people or groups based on things like religion, disability and sexual orientation and gender identity. The policy is expected to go to council in late December or early January. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Municipal election campaigns are like mushrooms that pop up every few years, with voters still in the dark about who’s fertilizing them with how much money. That’s why the B.C. government waited until the first elections for four-year municipal terms were held to examine how campaign spending should be regulated, says Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s minister for community, sport and cultural development. Oakes promised there will be new rules on spending and donations from property developers, unions and other donors to municipal council and school board candidates by the next province-wide municipal vote in 2018. A legislature committee started working on it in October, with recommendations due by Nov. 27. “What we found is that for a lot of the organizations, if you’re not in election mode, they are not formed,” Oakes said. “So we knew that if we were to do stakeholder engagement, we need to do it when the elec-

Some urban municipalities see substantial campaign donations from special interests, with only the requirement of disclosure long after votes are counted. In Vancouver, where developers and civic worker unions spend heavily, Mayor Gregor Robinson’s Vision Vancouver party and challenger Kirk Lapointe’s NonPartisan Association were pushed to voluntarily disclose their major donors before Saturday’s vote. Imposing campaign reform on local governments is an awkward task for the ruling B.C. Liberals, who have refused to give up their multi-milliondollar advantage in corporate donations over the NDP and other challengers. NDP leader John Horgan said Monday the opposition will soon table its annual private member’s bill calling for the elimination of corporate and union donations from provincial campaigns, as has been done in other provinces and at the federal level. tfletcher@nanaimobulletin.com

A number of service clubs, like the Odd Fellows and Elks, once saw their membership reach into the hundreds but now are challenged to get people out to a meeting. The Order of the Royal Purple, a service club for women, has closed its chapter after an unstoppable decline in membership. The clubs cite a change in society as a key reason for their membership decline. People are busier and less interested in the ritual of fraternal groups compared to the networking and establishing of business contacts offered by other organizations. As a result, long-time volunteers predict other fraternal organizations will face the same question of closure as the Royal Purple. There is no doubt a waning desire to join these service clubs, but there’s been no change in the need for what they do. These organizations help people afford guide dogs and hearing aids, offer students bursaries, support not-for-profits and contribute money to improve local parks. The Elks alone estimate they put $12,000 annually into Nanaimo. Our community is a better place because of the work that they do and if declining membership sees more organizations shut their doors, there will be a gap to fill in the charitable sector. As the membership ages, new people must be looked upon to step up and fill the void that will be left once the hard work and dedication from these clubs is lost. As the Royal Purple ends its chapter, it’s a good time for us to recognize just how important these groups are and what new challenges we may face without them.

the Christy Clark government wasted no time taking control of union bargaining on behalf of school districts. The puppet role of some school trustees was evident in the recent teacher strike. When the province opted to pay parents for the disruption, there was a chorus of protest from those supposedly elected to represent the interests of parents and taxpayers. School tax rates are now set by cabinet order, and the B.C. Liberal government is considering a move to regulate local industrial taxes. (This would presumably be to keep union-influenced municipalities from trying to get too many golden eggs from those liquefied natural gas plants.) Would Education Minister Peter Fassbender and his team continue their remake by amalgamating or eliminating school boards? Not likely. With a rare teacher settlement in place, trustees will have less incentive to grandstand. And their meetings might become something more than union beef sessions. u Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press newspapers. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

No doubt, most of those standing at the cenotaphs on Nov. 11 had the senseless death in Ottawa of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo on their minds; his killer was another mentally deranged man who had served jail time while pleading for help with his drug addiction, and met his death in dramatic fashion in our Parliament’s Centre Block. Ironically, the psychotic killer managed to galvanize a nation to attend cenotaph

services remembering those killed in wars, just as Canada wages war against ISIS in Iraq costing upwards of $250,000 per day, and dropping bombs that cost about $40,000 each. Will all those who recoil and react to an awful killing, be willing to galvanize together and insist that more government funds are devoted to treatment, care and rehabilitation of the mentally ill?

Bernie Smith Parksville

Dropping bombs won’t bring about peace To the Editor,

On the eve of a G20 summit in Australia, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada does not support war on any Middle East nation, only war

against ISIS. What I’d like to know is why Canada is going to war against anyone without Parliament’s debate and approval. Or did I miss something – maybe it was

contained in one of those ‘omnibus bills.’ Meanwhile, we’re dropping bombs on people to bring about peace? How dumb is that? Barbara Cooper Nanaimo

New council must work for taxpayers To the Editor,

Nanaimo voters showed they’d had enough. We re-elected the persistently questioning Three Amigos, thrusting Bill McKay into the mayor’s chair with a twoto-one thrashing over incumbent John Ruttan. We let other free-spending incumbents with attitude know their time was done; a couple made sure they did not run again and a couple more went down in flames. Only Diane Brennan squeaked into the final spot; her powerbase of colleagues gone. Now is the time for the new mayor and council to tell special interest groups the free money hand-outs are over; from the arts to senior city staff and unions. The Colliery dams are to be left standing.

The new and improved council needs to show, in practice, it works for the average taxpayer who elected them – those of us who want basic city services without all the frivolous spending bestowed upon us by an outgoing regime who sent our yearly tax bills skyrocketing. Most of all, McKay and his new batch of politicos need to tell senior staff they are the elected officials in charge and if the high-paid help doesn’t like it – there’s the door. Good luck to the new council. Watch our bucks, ask lots of questions and don’t slide in motions at the last minute through the back door.

Alzheimer society in need of volunteers Volunteers are urgently needed at the Nanaimo branch of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Facilitators are being sought for two support groups: one for caregivers, and the other for those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. Volunteers are also being recruited for the Minds in Motion program in Nanaimo. “It’s very rewarding work,” said Jane Hope, the society’s support and education coordinator for central and North Island. “You’re enriching the lives of others. You are playing an integral role in

helping those who are struggling to cope with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.” Support group facilitators run monthly meetings that use an information and mutual aid model. “They are based on the philosophy that people with similar issues are in a unique position to offer support to others on the same journey,” said Hope. “The objective of our groups is to strengthen the coping abilities of caregivers and reduce the impact of dementia on the community.” A time commitment of

approximately three to six hours per month is required. Extensive training is provided. Volunteers are also needed for Minds in Motion, a fitness and social program for those with early stage memory loss. It runs Tuesdays at Beban Park. Volunteers can choose to help with either a morning or an afternoon session. For more information and to volunteer, contact Jane Hope at 250-734-4170 or jhope@alzheimerbc.org. Residents can get more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias at www.alzheimerbc.org.

Golf tournament supports youth sports The Vancouver Island Real Estate Board raised more than $6,000 for KidSport B.C., during its 2014 President’s Cup Golf Tournament. Gary Gray, past president, presented a cheque for $6,073 to Ron Doetzel, KidSport B.C. volunteer and representative for the organization’s Port Alberni chapter. The money raised will be distributed among four of KidSport’s five Vancouver Island affiliates. Doetzel emphasized how

important donations are to the organization. “Too often, families are unable to afford the costs of sport registration fees. As a result, kids are left on the sidelines,” said Doetzel. “KidSport helps by issuing grants to cover the cost of registration fees for a season of sport.” KidSport is a community-based sport-funding program to help eliminate financial barriers that prevent children from playing organized sports.

You have dementia is a phrase no one wants to hear from their doctor, yet it’s a reality for an everincreasing number of Nanaimo residents. To help them understand this pressing health issue, the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. brings two free workshops to the city in the coming weeks. The first, Getting to Know Dementia, provides basic information on dementia and the impact it has on individuals, their caregivers and their support networks. The session is intended for people experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are currently supporting a person with a recent dementia diagnosis. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 21. The other session, the two-part Family Caregiver Series, provides practical techniques and strategies that caregivers can use immediately. Topics to be covered include understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias; effective and creative ways of facilitating communication with a person with dementia; understanding behaviour as a form of communication; self-care for the caregiver; planning for the future. The series runs Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Registration is required for all workshops, which take place at the Alzheimer Resource Centre, 200 - 1585 Bowen Rd. Please call Jane Hope at 250-734-4170 or e-mail jhope@ alzheimerbc.org.

SNORING?

SLEEP APNEA?

As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall a sleep. In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 NPN 80027595 #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

A $4,500 cash credit is offered on the base 1LS trim level version or you can get “0%” financing for up to 84 months. Camaro list prices for MY2014 range from $28,495 to $77,400. The turbo engine gives the compact Veloster a much needed power boost to match its edgy, gofaster sporty styling.

Subaru Imprezas on ice and snow It’s all about gaining traction for Subaru, not just on the pavement but also in terms of sales. For Subaru, traction and sales are related. When Subaru decided to switch its entire lineup of cars to all-wheel drive (AWD) back in 1995, the company never looked back. Back then, sales then were roughly 4,000 per year and this year Subaru is on track to sell over 40,000 units, an impressive accomplishment. In order to highlight Subaru’s latest Impreza compact sedan and hatchback, Subaru needed a location that could show off the vehicle on dry roads and in winter conditions. The Okanagan was chosen for the wonderful twisting roads through wine country but also snow-ondemand at Big White Ski Resort. Looks Earlier this year Subaru introduced the WRX, higher performance,

Impreza-based sedan to accolades for that vehicle’s handling, power and design. It could be argued that Subaru has refreshed the outside of this new 2015 Impreza with WRX “light”. The new front grille, headlamps, air intakes and wheel options all make a much bolder statement. Sold a sedan or hatchback, both cars now have a sharper look. Inside The Impreza had a similar onedimensional attitude before this new model arrived. Yes, it is one of the most practical designs, with big doors that make getting in and out a breeze, the huge windows make outward visibility impressive but the car lacked sophistication. For 2015 Subaru has done a good job of remedying the situation. The radio head unit now looks like a polished, integrated feature, replacing what looked like an afterthought. There is a standard 6.2-inch unit or a larger 7-inch model for cars equipped with navigation.

Going green can be costly By Keith Morgan

To plug in or not to plug in, that is the question faced by the well-heeled, nobler in mind, kind of person, who is determined to go green with the next car purchase. Whichever model you plump for from any of the leading hybrid manufacturers you are going to pay a premium in the thousands over the equivalent standard gas powered model. In pure economic terms, it will take years of fuel savings to bridge that investment gap. I’ve been telling you this version of the story for the past 10 years – consumers are not warming to green cars in sufficient numbers for the manufacturers to remove the sting from the sticker price. Green car sales still account for less than 5 percent of the market. Yes, you drive one away for less than $30,000 in some cases but that same sum can buy a lot more car elsewhere, many of them powered by very miserly four-cylinder. A case in point is the Ford C-MAX, available here either a pure hybrid or plug in – the latter bears the Energi name. The base hybrid version sells for $26,499 and its Energi sibling for $35,999. It is a worthy alternative to the Toyota Prius lineup the V (for versatile), it being the best comparison at $27,480 I’m going to dwell a little more here on the Energi plug-in version as I spent more time at the wheel. For the first part of the week, I ran it purely as a hybrid and averaged about 5.3 L/100 km/h. That’s higher than advertised but to be fair my trips were mainly in the city, short trips and through some ghastly weather. What a revelation when I plugged it in each night – 7 hours charges it up on the regular 120-volt outlet (2.5 hours on a 240-volt charging station). There are boasts of achieving up to 40 kilometres of driving in electric drive but I managed a little over 30 most days by judicious use of the right foot, in terms of acceleration and regenerative braking. Ford talks of a fuel economy equivalency of about 1.9 L/100 km/h under ideal conditions. However, I figure I could show an equivalency of around 3 L/100 km/h and perhaps better if I got the chance to get used to how the electric drive and gas engine work to together. In fact, there’s evidence through testing that early adopters of the plug-in hybrid technology that they began achieving far greater efficiency and longer pure electric driving after about six months’ ownership. In C-MAX Energi, the system offers battery charge and charge point distance information as well. Both versions of C-MAX are equipped with SmartGauge® with EcoGuide, an information system allowing drivers to see fuel economy readings on the instrument panel. The test vehicle featured a premium audio and navigation package, thus boosting the base price by $2,500 and a fabulous panoramic roof added a further $1,200 for a total approaching $43,000.

Drive Driving over ice covered roads on the way to Big White Ski Resort and then getting to push the Impreza as hard as it would allow on a snow covered handling course, gives a great sense of confidence in the car’s AWD system. Traction is not an issue, the limit is really only defined by the type of tires the car is equipped with. For ultimate bite, a good set of winter tires along with the AWD system is impressive. The 148hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine is carried over from the last car but now it is a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). Verdict The 2015 Impreza is all about small changes to an already good car. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) now has a thicker casing for quieter operation and it now features pre-set steps to help mimic a conventional automatic. And manual transmission owners will be pleased to know that all trim levels can be equipped with

Cold day warm thoughts about two-wheelers By Alexandra Straub

Honda has had a big year. Not only did it bring back the popular VFR800F (which I’ll get to in a bit), they released some all-new products. But the fun isn’t stopping there. With more motorcycles on the way for 2015, I thought now would be a good time to look back at some great bikes I rode in 2014. Besides, we might be deep into fall – with the accompanying frigid temperatures – but on sunny days, the roads aren’t without motorcycles. That’s definitely a warming thought. CBR650F Don’t let the “CBR” designation - followed by the 650 – intimidate you. This all-new middleweight bike has the sporty flair that you’re used to but with a twist. With a curb weight of 211kg (465 lbs.) and a seat height is 810mm (31.8-inches), complete with a narrow middle profile, it allows a range of riders to feel comfortable atop its seat. What I really liked about this bike is that yes, you have the sport bike styling, but without the wrist

and backache that can sometimes be experienced. The ergonomics are more upright so I was comfortable for much longer when I decided to go for an extended ride. Furthermore, engineers decided early on that chasing peak power at redline was

off their agenda. Strong acceleration from a standing start, low/mid range torque and mid-gear roll-on throttle response were targeted as the essential elements. Speaking of which, it’s powered by a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, inline-4 engine. It comes in great colours

like Sword Silver Metallic, and my test bike, which happened to be the eyecatching Candy Tahitian Blue The CBR650F has an MSRP of $8,999. VFR800F The wait is over and 2014 saw the re-introduction of the VFR800F. The legendary motorcycle is completely updated with a modern look, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork. Not to mention, there’s an adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda’s unique new self-cancelling turn signals. In the process, it sheds 10kg from the previous model, and has an engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque. The V4 engine configuration, which powers this sport-touring machine is unique to Honda and dates back four decades. The 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC 90° V4-VTEC engine allows for some great lowend power, but rev it higher and you dig into the VTEC, which will really put a smile on your face. Much like the VTEC in Honda vehicles, VTEC valve

Honda’s CBR650F has a sporty flair with a twist. timing still operates one pair of inlet/exhaust valves per cylinder at low rpm, and then switches to four as revs rise but the transition is now seamless. The seat is height adjustable (789mm/31-inches or 809mm/31.8-inches) using the tool provided and it weighs in at 239kg (527 lbs.) It has an MSRP of $13,499. NC750XA It’s the more adventurous of two NC models (the S

and X), with a taller ride height (830mm/32.6inches in comparison to 790mm/31.1-inches) and a more upright seating position. This “different” breed of bike isn’t the high redlining sort Honda riders might be used to. It’s ideal for urban romping or a pleasure cruise. For 2014, an extra 75cc capacity was added to the liquid-cooled, SOHC 8-valve parallel twin- cylinder

engine. With its engine mounted low to the ground, it naturally equates to a low centre of gravity and an easy-to-move-around type of riding dynamic. Furthermore, you can get upwards of 400km out of the 14L tank. Not bad. With the fuel tank under the seat, you have that allows for a handy storage compartment in place of where you’d normally put in your gas; one of the coolest

features of this bike. It has an MSRP of $8,199. CB500XA One member of the CB500 trifecta, the 500XA, is a charming little bike that fulfills the idea of owning an adventurestyle bike but one that is more manageable for newer riders in the genre. It has a compact adjustable windscreen, open riding accommodations and largecapacity fuel tank. It has an MSRP of $6,049.

Book exposes life in the Strait of Georgia

Nanaimo researchers speak at the Harbourfront library on Saturday BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

I

t can be argued that perhaps there is no other body of water in British Columbia more important than the Strait of Georgia. At roughly 220 kilometres in length, the Strait is home to thousands of marine species, a huge economic resource for the province and used extensively by the thousands of people who live along its shores. For nearly a decade, Nanaimo-based researchers Dick Beamish and George McFarlane have dedicated countless hours to researching the area. Their combined efforts have manifested into a comprehensive book called The Sea Among Us: The Amazing Strait of Georgia. “It’s about all aspects of the Strait of Georgia,” Beamish said. “We wanted all British Columbians to know more about the Strait, including the birds, fishes, marine mammals, shell fish, beaches, plants, plankton, oceanography … and that kind of thing.” On Saturday (Nov. 22) Beamish and McFarlane will be at the Harbourfront Library as part of a launch party for The Sea Among Us: The Amazing Strait of Georgia, which includes a presentation, book signing and a question period. All author royalties for the book, which will sell in stores for $39.95, will be donated to the Pacific Salmon Foundation. The Sea Among Us touches on a wide range of topics ranging from fish, birds, marine mammals, geology, oceanography, the history of the area’s settlement. “I think for the first time, many people will begin to understand what oceanography is about in general,” Beamish said. “Particularly for the Strait of Georgia.” Beamish is a highly respected researcher who holds a doctorate in zoology from the University of Toronto. write it.” The idea to create the book began roughly eight years ago with the intention raise awareness about the importance of the Strait of Georgia and the challenges it is facing. “It’s sort of like our own health. The more that people about how we function the better we are able to take care of ourselves,” Beamish said. “The more that British Columbians know about the Strait of Georgia the better we’re going to be able to care of it in the future.” According to Beamish, all of the contributing authors are concerned about the health of the Strait of Georgia and hope that their work will inspire people to become involved with the 220-kilometre body of water that is home to roughly 225 different kinds of fish. “I think all the authors would say that the reason that they all volunteered and produced excellent chapters is that we are concerned about the overall health of the Strait of Georgia and we believe that British Columbians really have to become part of the stewardship of the Strait,” Beamish said. “I think that will come across to all readers, the more that they learn the better chances are that the Strait is going to remain healthy.” Beamish and McFarlane will be speaking at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library on Saturday (Nov. 22) at 1 p.m. For more information, please visit www.virl.bc.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Hybrid production explores death

HIGHGATE runs tomorrow night at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre. By Nicholas Pescod The News BUlleTIN

Highgate runs tomorrow night at Malaspina Theatre. The hybrid production explores the subject of death.

A dark hybrid dance theatre production will take centre stage tomorrow night at Vancouver Island University. The production titled Highgate, will run on Friday (Nov. 21) at the Malaspina Theatre, 7:30 p.m., and features five “dancer-actors.” Highgate focuses on the subject of death and the Victorian funerary culture. “It’s an exploration of Victorian funerary obsession and a study of death, and how we deal or don’t deal with it,” said creator and director Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg. “Death was much more of a reality or an everyday occurrence in the Victorian era and that is what I

was interested in.” Friedenberg explained that although Highgate explores a morbid subject the production has moments of humour. “There are some very comic characters and ridiculousness,” she said. “There is also a lot of sad beauty.” Highgate has toured throughout Canada and is making its final stop of the month in the Harbour City. Friedenberg explained that the response has been positive. “I think people are really happy to have a place to look at and think about death. When I talk to the audience members after ... people are really responsive and

moved.” Highgate’s name is taken from England’s Highgate Cemetery in London, which has more than 53,000 graves and is the final resting place for more than 170,000 people including philosopher Karl Marx. “It’s a pretty amazing place,” she said. “Very beautiful and very creepy and that got me interested in the Victorians and how they dealt with death.” Friedenberg said that she was also interested in how our current culture avoids the topic of death. “I was interested in how we don’t deal with it,” she said. “How old people are swept away into seniors’ facilities and closed doors. I wanted to bring it out in the open because it is something we aren’t going to get out of this life alive.” Since 2000, Friedenberg has created

a number of awardwinning productions including bANGERThe Power Hour and Nick & Juanita-Livin’ in my Dreams, which were both named the People’s Choice at the Dancing on the Edge Festival. Friedenberg said that people who take in her production will be taken to the underworld. “When you experience this show you are taken to the underworld,” she said. “You’re taken into this fantastical world of the newly dead.” Highgate runs at the Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre tomorrow (Nov. 21) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the event range from $5 to $25 and can be purchased by visiting www.crimsoncoastdance.org or by calling 250-716-3230. JUNO AWARD winner Prevail working with first-born nephew in new rap group, Alpha Omega. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

For almost two decades Canadian hip-hop artist Prevail has carved out a legacy with his JunoAward winning hiphop group Swollen Members. Lately, however, Prevail has begun to shift his attention to a new hip-hop group, called Alpha Omega. The group is a collaboration with his first-born nephew, who goes by the stage name Neph. “We’ve been having a blast making tunes,” Prevail told the News Bulletin. Tonight (Nov. 20) Alpha Omega will be showcasing its sound at the Queen’s. The performance in the Harbour City is one of the final stops on a tour that has taken the group through Alberta and British

Columbia. “We love Nanaimo, obviously being an Island boy myself,” Prevail said. “We have an appreciation and a fondness for the Harbour City. I love playing the Queen’s. It has such an amazing vibe and it is pretty nostalgic for me.” The Victoria-raised artist said he has enjoyed being able to collaborate and act as a mentor to his nephew. “It’s cool to have that creative dynamic as well. We knew going into it that we would have that vibe, but we’ve just meshed really amazingly on the creative and recording vibe,” Prevail said. “I think that I am trying to help him lay some roadwork and some templates so that he can expand upon himself as well.” Prevail said that Alpha Omega will have a slightly different sound than Swol-

len Members. “It’s really high energy, but quite brooding at the same time,” Prevail said. “I am flipping some new styles and trying some new stuff.” The newly formed hip-hop group is currently working towards the release of their first record, which is set to come out early next year. “It’s an exciting time as far as the creative avenue goes,” Prevail said. “We’re starting to carve out a sound of our own, which is pretty unique in this day in age in underground hip-hop.” On Oct. 31, Alpha Omega released their first single, Northern Passage, on YouTube.

Juno-award winning hip-hop artist Prevail performs at the Queen’s tonight with his newly formed group Alpha Omega. The group is a collaboration with his first-born nephew.

“I try to mention a lot of the symbolism that we have, especially on the West Coast, with the Thunderbird and referencing certain parts of Canada that I think have historic and nostalgic value for a lot of us,” Prevail said. “That song, Northern Passage, is really an ode to Canada and a way for me to paint the landscape from coast to coast, but still be able to do it cryptically.” While the Junoaward winning hiphop artist has been focusing his time on Alpha Omega and other projects, such as running an online publication called PrevailPrevail.com,

he explained he is still very much a part of Swollen Members. “We’ve [Swollen Members] clawed back for the last three or four years to get ourselves back to a point of respectability,” Prevail said. “Not only in the industry side of things and our fan base, but really to ourselves as well to prove that we still have the focus and the work ethic.” Alpha Omega performs alongside Kyprios from Sweatshop Union at the Queen’s at 7 p.m. Please visit www. www.prevailprevail. com or follow @PrevailPrevail on Twitter. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET It has been a long time since I enjoyed a turkey club sandwich and the one I ate at Frankie’s Modern Diner deserves accolades. I believe a person should always give an eating place a second chance and am so happy that I did and will go back again. BEEF To the lady at the dog park at Beban. There’s a reason they have a big and small dog park. My dog, who is only nine months old, was attacked by your full-grown mutt. Next time I see you there, your dog better have a muzzle. BOUQUET To the off-duty police officer who helped my daughter and stayed with her until I arrived when my car broke down on a dark, damp night by Dover Bay Secondary School. Thanks a ton for being there and all your help, that was above and beyond the call of duty. BOUQUET To Art Groot, manger and facility planner for the City of Nanaimo for going far beyond what the average person would normally do. When my adult disabled client lost her beloved swing in the playground downtown due to vandalism, you sent to Australia to replace it. The City of Nanaimo and the disabled community are so blessed to have people like you looking after it. BOUQUET To all of the people involved in the decision to repave sections of Highway 19 north of Nanaimo rather than just filling the cracks with tar – it is much more pleasant to drive and ride on and hopefully it will stand up for several years. BOUQUET To the handsome young man who cleans the aquatic centre gym. It is the cleanest gym I have walked into. BOUQUET We cannot say enough about ABC north-end resturant. The food is excellent, the service when we go is always first class thanks to two of the great gals who go beyond to make us feel so special every single time and do some pretty special things for our table.

BOUQUET To Craig at The Transfer Studio in Country Club Centre. Craig saw how important the video cassettes of my children were to me and I was so grateful to him for carefully transferring our precious memories onto DVD disks.

BOUQUET To Nanaimo drivers. You are as good as I have ever seen, despite your critics.

BOUQUET To Katey and Matt, Philip and Johnathan and his crew. Through thick and thin during the difficult building process and the ugly timing of the weather, you always had our backs to make sure it was done with care and understanding toward us. Thank you for your patience. BOUQUET To my husband for putting up with me this long. BOUQUET To the Bulk Barn for selling carbolic soap – an anti-germ soap. BOUQUET To the organizers and volunteers of the recent Diwalhi celebration event. The food and dancing were delightful. BOUQUET To the off-duty firefighter who helped a collapsed woman at Nanaimo North Town Centre. The shoppers who also helped appreciated your professional, skilled intervention and care.

BOUQUET To the tall handsome man with a group of children walking along Stewart Avenue near Cypress. You spotted my car keys and very creatively kept them safe. Thanks for your honesty and integrity. BOUQUET To Betty at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257 for her many hours making soup for Remembrance Day. She always works hard and rarely stays around long enough after an event to be thanked. Your efforts are much appreciated. BOUQUET To all the members of Lantzville’s Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 257, who worked so hard to make our first Remembrance Day ceremony at our new cenotaph such a success. Such a wonderful tribute to our veterans and to those who continue to serve and protect us.

BOUQUET To the News Bulletin for the amzaing quality of the Remembrance Day feature. The layout was excellent, the stories were well written and overall an amazing job.

Daniels,

Jack (John Raymond) Jack (John Raymond) Daniels, born April 9, 1933, passed away peacefully at home November 9, 2014. Survived by his loving wife Mickey, children Mike (Lisa), Valerie Raye, Patricia (Rob), Mark (Donna), Joan (John), Judy (Keith), eighteen grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place early in the New Year. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Phyllis Helen Cairns

March 9, 1920 ~ November 14, 2014.

A life well lived. hyllis was born in Shaunavon, Sask., to George & Frances Olive Barr. The youngest of seven siblings, Phyllis had an independent, practical nature and a quick wit. She loved to laugh and verbally spar. A minimalist at heart, she had reduced life to its essence and appreciated individuals with creative expression. Her education and career as a social worker in government adoptions put into practice her gift of helping others. On Dec. 2, 1961, in Calgary, Alberta, Phyllis married William Cairns, with whom she created a warm, inviting home where family and friends were always welcome. Phyl and Bill loved dogs. As a kid, Phyl had a companion, Rover, and over the years, along came Buster, Monty, canine pal of Diggy, and Bear, adopted from her niece, Joan, and her husband Butch Takenaka. Phyllis is survived by her many nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. She had no children of her own, but she was everybody’s favourite aunt! Upon retirement, Phyllis and Bill moved to Qualicum, B.C., where they golfed, played bridge and entertained. Bill passed away too soon, on Feb. 27, 1987, at the age of 63. Phyllis moved to Parksville, where she enjoyed living by the water, travelling and playing her favourite game of bridge. She moved to Origin at Longwood, Nanaimo, and then to the Kiwanis Lodge, where she was cared for by its wonderful staff. The last days of Phyllis’ life were spent as she had always lived, with dignity and grace. She was a strong, self-effacing woman who was greatly loved. No funeral service will be held. The family will host a celebration of life in her honour at a date to be determined in Spring, 2015. If desired, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the SPCA.

Wayne Morrison Gerald (Jerry) Michael Pockiak

at the age of 71, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2014, at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. He is survived by loving wife Susan of 36 years, children Derrick (Jessica) Pockiak, Lori (Bill) Yoachim, and grandchildren Samantha Yoachim and Grace Pockiak, Sister-in-law Carole Pockiak. Predeceased by father Michael Pockiak, mother Jessie Ripley, and brother Bill Pockiak. He was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on April 12, 1943. He lived his life between Saskatchewan and British Columbia and spent his final years settled in Nanaimo. He worked for many years in sales and as an entrepreneur. Jerry’s greatest joy apart from family was the countless hours spent on his many boats. He retired at the age of 56, to spend time on his boat “Sea Ya” and vacation with wife Susan. Thank you to Dr. Kingston, the Hospitalists, Dr. Kingsley, Dr. Baille, and the entire third floor staff at NRGH who cared for him throughout the last year. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

Ruth Ellen Johnston

It is with very heavy hearts we announce that on Thursday, November 13, 2014, Ruth Ellen Johnston, mother and best friend passed away at home with family at her side after a brief battle with cancer. Ruth is predeceased by her husband Earle Mervyn Johnston and is survived by daughters Sandra (Edward), Beverley (Les), Anne, Doreen (Bill) and Tammy, 13 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Ruth was born and raised in North Sydney, Nova Scotia and moved to Nanaimo in 1974. She will always be remembered for her great sense of humour. A very special thank you to all the staff at NRGH Palliative Care Unit, who without your support, we would not have been able to bring Mom home and care for her and also, a special thank you to the nurses on the 6th floor. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Palliative Care Unit at NRGH would be greatly appreciated by her family. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So he put his arms around you And whispered “Come to me” With tearful eyes we watched you As you slowly slipped away And though we loved you dearly We couldn’t make you stay Your golden heart stopped beating Your tired hands put to rest God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best Miss you Mom Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

“In the Loving Arms of Jesus” After a lengthy courage battle with cancer, Wayne passed away peacefully on Nov. 12th. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Lois, his beloved daughters Shelly & Tammy, 3 grand children: Kyle, Joshua & Amy and his brother Don. Wayne was an avid carver of birds. He enjoyed golfing, fishing with his buddy and he never turned down a chance to go for coffee with his friends. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Nov. 22nd at 2:00 at Nanaimo Full Gospel Assembly, 4900 Hammond Bay Road. In lieu of flowers a donation to a cancer foundation of your choice would be appreciated.

William (Bill) Lychak

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Lychak. He was born in Nanaimo, BC on July 11, 1947 and passed away peacefully on November 13, 2014 at the age of 67 in the comfort of his home in Qualicum Beach. He was taken from us too soon after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Bill was predeceased by his father, William, and his mother Johanna. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Anne, and their two sons, Billy (Adriana) and Bobby, his two brothers, Ron and Joe, sister-in-law, Kari (Ed) Wowchuck, brother-in-law, Knut Leine, and nieces and nephews. Bill spent his working life in the forestry industry and as a young man, he spent a short time drilling and blasting, but his true calling was found in falling trees on the West Coast and he did this for 40 plus years. He retired in 2007 and spent a lot of his time in the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting and exploring the wilderness on his quad. He taught many others how to embrace and respect the rugged land he so loved. He was also a talented woodworker and spent many hours in his shop crafting many beautiful pieces. His presence will be greatly missed in our lives everyday. Although gone from our sight, he will forever be in our hearts. No service by request. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

At Christmas time each year the community newspapers of Black Press organize and promote the PENNIES FOR PRESENTS CAMPAIGN, which raises money for charity. For the last 18 years the PENNIES FOR PRESENTS campaign has raised more than $160,000 (in Nanaimo alone!) in pennies, nickels, dimes and other change for various local community charities. Frank Legh was the founder and driving force behind the Pennies for Presents, and in honour of Frank’s memory we will be continuing this campaign, now called Coins for Kids. Special teams key for Clippers to stay division leaders BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

The division-leading Nanaimo Clippers will look to stay on top with a stretch of three games in four nights. The B.C. Hockey League club hosted the Victoria Grizzlies last night after press time and travel down the highway to play the team again at The Q Centre Friday night (Nov. 21). Nanaimo hosts the Trail Smoke Eaters the following night at Frank Crane Arena. Head coach Mike Vandekamp said the team is starting to establish an understanding of its fiveon-five game. It will continue to work on special teams, particularly short-handed We’ve got situations, he said. “Our penalty kill to work on has given up some that part of goals in the last few games,” said your game Vandekamp. “We’ve to work on that and continue got part of your game continue to just to just try to and try to get better.” get better. The Clips have amassed a 3-0 record against the Grizzlies, a team Vandekamp calls hard working with good speed and tenacity. Saturday’s game will represent Nanaimo’s first against Trail this season. Despite the Smoke Eaters dwelling at the bottom of the Interior Division, the Clippers’ coach said his team will not take the team lightly. “They [Trail] have got a lot of players who are going to college hockey next year,” said Vandekamp. “They’ve got a strong, strong lineup. The whole Interior Division is a strong division, I think, in our league, so any team that comes from that division to play us is going to be tough, tough battle.” Vandekamp said goaltending would be a game-time decision.

Naythan Vogt, John Barsby Bulldog receiver, breaks off for a big gain against Prince George in the team’s post-season opener last Saturday at Merle Logan Field. The team hosts the Seaquam Seahawks this Saturday (Nov. 22) in the next round of the playoffs.

Focus key for Barsby team in playoffs

I

AA VARSITY team hosts Seaquam Seahawks. BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Seaquam Seahawks will be the next hurdle in the John Barsby Bulldogs’ road toward back-to-back AA varsity football championships. The Bulldogs host the Seahawks at 1 p.m. on Sat-

urday (Nov. 22) at Merle Logan Field and according to Rob Stevenson, Barsby head coach, his team will have to stay sharp throughout the game. “I saw them play [Nanaimo District Secondary School] early this year. They surely have some size, a very good quarterback, a couple of very speedy receivers, so we’re going to have to be sound fundamentally and have integrity with our scheme. We can’t get lazy

against this team,” Stevenson said. Quarterback North Rainey said that the Bulldogs’ defence will have to contend with the Seahawks’ spread offense and on the offensive side of the ball. If they can grind it out on the ground, things should go John Barsby’s way. “I think if we run the ball and just do what we do every week in and out, we should handle them very well,” said Rainey.
