Mitch Campsall held on to his seat as mayor of the District of 100 Mile House by a narrow margin in the Nov. 15 local elections. He received a total of 295 votes at the polls, beating out his competitor, Maureen Pinkney (at 285), by just 10 votes. The race for District councillor seats saw all four incumbents retaining their seats at the council table. Leading the pack was Dave Mingo, with 425 votes, the most obtained by any candidate in the election, followed by Ralph Fossum (386) and Bill Hadden (385) and Spence Henderson (307). The three new councillor candidates, who were unsuccessful in their bid to make it to the council table, were Rita Giesbrecht (231), John McCarvill (176) and Peter Reid (143). Campsall says he is “very happy” to be re-elected along with the four incumbent councillors. “We can continue on with getting prepared for 2018, when the timber supply becomes an issue.” He adds the “reality” is the mayor and councillors have to get on with what they were already doing. However, Campsall will also be looking into potential changes stemming from what he and others on council heard when canvassing doorto-door during election campaign. “They were pretty blunt out there ... and I was quite happy that they were ... because you start to hear exactly how they feel. And, we got that message.” Maureen Pinkney thanks voters District of 100 Mile House 2014 mayoral candidate Maureen Pinkney lost the Nov. 15 local election by just 10 votes. Pinkney said she would have enjoyed being the local community’s representative. “I would like to congratulate all of the incumbents on their re-election, and I would like to thank all of you who did get to the polls and cast your vote for me. “Of course, I am very disappointed in the loss. I put my hat into the ring to win, not just to stir the pot. I truly believed that our [council] needed some new energy and ideas, more progressive planning into our future, and just the change that comes with a new person’s experience [when] assets they have are brought to the table.” As of press time, Pinkney was undecided if she will ask for a recount, but said she is currently investigating that option. “I truly would have had [the] open door, open meeting, interactive style of governing that we should have.”

100 Mile House Fire-Rescue, Watch Lake-North Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Lone Butt Fire Department combined forces to battle a stubborn house fire on Watch Lake Road on Nov. 15. Fortunately, the sleeping homeowners were woken up by a passer-by and they got out of their home safely.

Fire claims Watch Lake Road residence

While they may have lost their home, two Watch Lake Road residents were fortunate they weren’t physically injured or worse on Saturday morning – thanks to the quick actions of a passing Good Samaritan. A man, who was driving on Watch Lake Road, noticed smoke billowing from the attached

garage and called 9-1-1, says 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue chief Darrell Blades. Then he pounded on the front door and woke the couple up and got them out of the house, he adds. Blades notes the home had working smoke alarms, but because the fire was outside the home at the time, they didn’t go off until the garage door was opened.

Lone Butte Fire Department received the call-out at 8:09 a.m. on Nov. 15 and attended with five firefighters and a tender. Blades notes that when they arrived, the fire was already in the roof. According to witnesses, the fire chief says it appears the fire started in the attached garage and worked its way along its Continued on A3

Incumbents re-elected to seats in council chambers

District of 100 Mile House elections saw all four incumbent councillors – Dave Mingo, Ralph Fossum, Bill Hadden and Spence Henderson – retain their seats. Mingo says was pleased with the result. “It is good to have the same team on council. We work well together and we all bring our differing views and strengths to the table to the benefit of 100 Mile House. “I also would like to thank [candidates] Rita Giesbrecht, John McCarvill and Peter Reid for putting their names forward for council; it shows they are dedicated to their community.” Although mayoral candidate Maureen Pinkney did not win, Fossum says he greatly respects her enthusiasm, energy and ongoing hard work, so he hopes council can retain some of her assistance with ongoing government issues. “I think we have a good team; the town is healthy; and the election

reflected that. There were so many votes for the incumbents, and I am thankful for that.” Hadden says the election results were “quite interesting.” “We received a majority support, the four councillors reelected, so we are very, very happy about that. But, there were also a significant amount of people who voted for change.” Hadden says he plans to sit down with the three candidates who did not win to find out more about their concerns, and then build that into what council does moving forward. Henderson says he is also enthusiastic to get back to work with the same group. “We have great staff, and all of us are back, so I am pretty excited about the future.” His plan is to now do more brainstorming on the key issues with the rest of council, he explains. Henderson adds a potential trades training centre and new water supplies will likely be at the top of the list.

If you are struggling to make ends meet financially, the Coats for All project invites and welcomes you to drop by for a free warm coat or other winter clothing items it is offering for families. Donated winter outerwear will be publicly offered on Nov. 22, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the 100 Mile United Church, 43 Dogwood Ave. Winter wear will continue to be available at local service agencies, so clients should check at their agencies.

TRADE SCHOOL Cariboo Regional District (CRD) directors have endorsed a recommendation to commit up to $15,000 for creation of a business plan for a trade school in 100 Mile. This involves the CRD and the District of 100 Mile House each committing $7,500, which then allows for an application to the Northern Development Initiative Trust for more funding to develop the trade school business plan. The South Cariboo Joint Committee has received a favourable response from Thompson Rivers University on the trade school idea.

roofline into the wall of the home and spread to its roof and engulfed second storey. At 8:17 a.m., 100 Mile and Watch Lake/North Green Lake fire department were called out for mutual aid. When 100 Mile members arrived, one of the members assumed command because he was the most experienced firefighter at the scene. It was a stubborn fire as it quickly spread through the walls into the main floor and eventually into the basement. “The fire was heavily involved on the first floor and both floors and the walls were compromised, so it was ‘defensive fire’ that was fought externally only,” Blades explains. Noting he assumed command when he arrived around 10:30 a.m., the fire chief says were was a bit of an issue with water supply due to the distances the tenders had to travel to get water and bring it back to the fire scene. He adds there were four tenders involved in battling the blaze – one from 100 Mile, one from Lone Butte and two from the Watch Lake department. When they exhausted the water supply from the reservoir at the Lone Butte Fire Hall, Blades says they

tried to get water from the nearby Anderson Subdivision, but it has a low pressure system. Then they travelled to Green Lake and took water from the dry hydrant system the local fire department installed recently. “The dry hydrants worked well, but it was a long way to travel and a bit slow due to the frosty and winding road.” Estimates on how much water was poured onto and into the burning building range from 20,000 to 30,000 gallons. At 1:42 p.m., Blades turned command over to the Lone Butte firefighters who kept busy putting out hot spots until around 7 p.m. Lone Butte fire chief Jon Grieve says his crew was back at the scene on Sunday morning to put out hot spots while an excavator knocked down the back wall, after insurance inspectors had a look at the site. While the excavator was clearing debris and charred rubble out of the basement, Grieve says firefighters were able to “save a few small heirlooms for the family.” They put out hot spots for about three hours before returning to the fire hall. Given the intensity of the fire, he notes the firefighting efforts went well and nobody got hurt.

Watson Lake residents watch chopper rescue downed plane

Watson Lake residents got to see an interesting event at the lake last weekend, Nov. 15-16. Witnesses say a couple of small airplanes appeared to be practising takeoffs and landing on the lake on Saturday when one of them had a front wheel go through the ice while turning around for a takeoff around 4 p.m. Following that, the plane’s propeller got stuck in the ice. The pilot walked away, but returned with helpers and sawhorses, which they put under the plane’s wings and left it overnight. The witnesses say they returned around 9 a.m. on Sunday, and at noon, a helicopter arrived, and a cable was hitched to the plane. The chopper then picked the plane off the ice and set it down on a nearby field.

The signing of a groundbreaking threeyear education agreement with Canim Lake Band was a highlight at a School District #27 (SD27) board meeting in 100 Mile House on Oct. 28. “It is with great excitement that the board has signed this Local Education Agreement [LEA] with Canim Lake Band,” said SD27 chair Tanya Guenther. “The LEA outlines our shared commitments to First Nation student success.” Chief Mike Archie attended the document signing and welcomed the trustees and staff to his traditional territory. He also spoke about some of the strengths and challenges he had experienced in his own education, and the notable geographic size of the school district that the board governs, and governs well. Later, Guenther explained the LEA is essentially an agreement that sees funding flow from the federal

government to the individual area band, and then from the band to the local school district. The big difference here is, in the past these were strictly financial documents, while this LEA encompasses a lot more than that, thanks to the provincial First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC), she added. “FNESC has been doing a lot of work over the past couple of years to make the LEA more than just a financial agreement. They’ve created a toolkit; they've done workshops all across the province. “The significance in this particular signing is that this is our first agreement within our district based on the new FNESC template and workshops.” Not all bands or school districts have these agreements, but SD27 has had them with four bands, she noted. Guenther said LEAs are typically an annual agreement, but some are longer or may be extended.

This agreement with Canim Lake Band spans from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2017. These are separate, specific agreements from some other education partnership documents, such as an umbrella enhancement agreement SD27 has with all the larger bands, she explained. SD27 education services instruction director Jerome Beauchamp said the LEA is a partnership agreement that lays out what the responsibilities are in the education of students from the band. It includes the usual provisions for programs, student assessments, and so on, but also lays out

what the band is responsible for, he explained. Beauchamp added its basic purpose is to ensure First Nations students are successful. “We have agreed that twice a year we are going to get together, and we are going to report on how their kids are doing, and they are going to report to us about the supports that they have in place [for] those kids.” By doing this, he said they can determine how well the plan is working and where any gaps are, and then figure out together how any issues can be addressed toward the mutual goal of producing well-educated children.

IHA looking at privatization

By Richard Rolke

How to provide laundry will be put the through the wringer at Interior hospitals. On Aug. 12, the Interior Health Authority (IHA) notified unionized staff it’s exploring the future of laundry service and specifically whether using a private contractor is

financially feasible. “There is no predetermined option,” says Lori Holloway, IHA regional director of facilities management. IHA currently has five large and six small laundry sites with 175 employees. In 100 Mile House, there are three fulltime equivalent staff

Attempted murder suspect back in court

Ken Alexander Free Press

100 Mile House area resident Phillip Thomas May was in 100 Mile House provincial court on Nov. 14-15 and will appear again on Jan. 27, 2015. The 59-year-old was charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident on May 31. 100 Mile House RCMP responded to a complaint of a man in distress in the 7000 block of 93 Mile Loop Road. When officers attended scene, they found a 39-year-old 100 Mile House area man who had been shot. Suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries, he was rushed to hospital, and later released. When May was identified as a suspect in the shooting incident, RCMP members went to a Lone Butte area to arrest him. When they arrived, the police confirmed May was present, but he fled the residence, hopped into a vehicle and raced away from the scene. RCMP officers eventually arrested the suspect after they forced the escape vehicle off the road. May is facing other charges, including aggravated assault, using a firearm to cause bodily harm and flight from a police officer. He remains in custody.

members. “We want to ensure we have a sustainable laundry service,” adds Holloway of the need for the review. “We have limited capital dollars to support our aging infrastructure.” IHA spends about $10 million a year to operate the laundry service and it’s believed about $10.5 million is needed over the next several years to replace equipment, such as washing machines. “Interior Health is not in a position to make significant investments in laundry, but rather place priority on the most pressing patient care needs, such as medical equipment, and development of new or upgraded patient care spaces,” states a release.

This week, IHA, along with Lower Mainland health authorities, will issue a joint request for qualification to see if private companies are interested in providing laundry services. IHA is also meeting with the Hospital Employees Union, which represents laundry staff, to discuss alternatives beyond going to the private sector. “Nothing is changing today. We are just in the process of determining our options,” says Holloway, who wouldn’t speculate on possible options that could see the service continue under IHA’s mandate. The earliest any changes could occur is April 2016, but HEU hopes privatization can be stopped.

“We’re really disappointed IHA is considering contracting out,” says Mike Old, HEU communications director. “Clearly these are important jobs to our members, their families and their communities. They deliver a quality service to the health-care system.” Old says the union will participate in the consultation process with IHA. “Our experience is that contracting out results in lower wages for employees and less control over the service by the health authority. “We will try and make sure we protect these jobs and the service.” Richard Rolke is a reporter for the Vernon Morning Star.

District of 100 Mile House council has endorsed the request from the 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society for use of its woodlot at 99 Mile to install a skills park.

found the ground is too wet and the terrain too steep to feasibly host a skills park, she explains. “What needed to be done was going to be quite costly, as opposed to this other little area that we looked at.” Noting the idea came

his House sitting should be noted as the B.C. Liberals showed their true colours. It was a memorable week when the B.C. Liberals took a page from the (Stephen) Harper Tories playbook and destroyed a legacy of climate leadership in British Columbia. In what will become known as a defining moment in B.C. history, the B.C. Liberals introduced second reading of Bill 2 – Greenhouse Gas Industrial Reporting and Control Act, and subsequently spoke strongly in support of it. Bill 2 represents a shameful betrayal of future generations. It replaces key climate policies with a made-in-Alberta, Harper government approach that will instead allow for a dramatic increase in greenhouse gas emissions in B.C. In 2008, I worked with the government, academics, industry leaders and First

Nations to develop a suite of carbon we emit into of policies that has allowed the atmosphere, an us to reduce our carbon emissions-intensity emissions while growing scheme would only require our economy. he next couple of Fridays are going to be huge for both the community and the merchants in 100 Mile House. This Friday (Nov. 21) will be entertaining and exciting in the downtown core with three big events, starting at 5:30 p.m., and it would be great if we can show support by coming out for them. Kicking off the evening, the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce is hosting the annual Santa Claus Parade, which marks the beginning of the Christmas holiday season. This is a family event that sees people lining Birch Avenue to show their appreciation for the floats from the local businesses, charities and non-profit groups, and children particularly like to see Santa Claus come to 100 Mile. After the parade, Santa Claus will flip the switch for the Starry Nights 2 Light-up Celebration at 100 Mile District General Hospital at 7 p.m. This event is the South Cariboo Health Foundation’s fundraiser that allows sponsors to purchase Health Stars that will be hung at the hospital. Following the light-up ceremony, residents are encouraged to check out the local businesses that are offering sales and great deals as part of the Moonlight Madness shopping extravaganza. On Nov. 28, our merchants will be putting on their Black Friday sales event, and offering great deals for South Cariboo residents. It is extremely important for all of us to support our local businesses during the Christmas shopping season, as it is the most important part of the year in terms of annual sales. For many business owners, it is a make-it or breakit time for their whole year. They rely on this income to keep their businesses open until the streets fill up again with the tourists and seasonal property owners who start coming back in the spring and bring their family and friends with them. Realistically, we have to help them keep their doors open for business – not only during the holiday shopping season, but also throughout the year. Their prices are comparable, and if they don’t have it, who needs it? Their service is great because they are our friends and neighbours, so they’re willing to share their expertise and answer our questions and there’s no price tag involved. They hire our children and provide experience and money for them to get started in their own careers. Best of all, we don’t need to travel on wintry roads and deal with strangers who just see us as money in their cash registers. Local merchants support our community with donations to numerous causes and community events, as well as with their volunteer time. They deserve our support.

the only thing that matters. So why are we going down this path? It’s because the government knows that emissions are going to skyrocket if we develop our LNG industry. And an Alberta or Harper government style emissions-intensity model will provide the illusion of action on global warming at the same time as our overall magnitude of carbon emissions continue to increase. That’s all this is: the illusion of action. The simple fact is, if we pass this bill, we may as well say goodbye to all of the progress we have made, for we will be stepping into a new era as one of the most polluting provinces in Canada. So please take a moment right now to contact Premier Christy Clark and Liberal MLAs to urge them to discard Bill 2. Andrew Weaver is the Deputy Leader of the B.C. Green Party.

Omnibus bill subverts democracy, human decency To the editor: The Conservative government’s latest omnibus bill is another attempt to undermine good government and local MP Cathy McLeod’s defence of it is disappointing. The Prime Minister, with the full support of government MPs like Cathy McLeod, have buried important legislation in this 458-page bill, hoping it will not get the full and democratic debate it deserves. This is another example of the Stephen Harper government using omnibus

bills to subvert democracy. The mammoth bill includes a wide range of measures, including legislation that could allow provincial governments to restrict or deny income assistance to refugee claimants. Restricting basic income is a violation of human rights and reminiscent of Harper’s previous decision to limit and deny refugee claimants’ access to universal, public health care. It took a federal court judge to block that legislation, saying it

constituted “cruel and unusual’ treatment, put lives at risk, and that it “outraged Canadian standards of decency.” The government is appealing the federal court decision. I have met many 100 Mile House residents and I think they would expect their MP to support refugee claimants and stand up for those needing health care and assistance. That’s what has made this country so strong, so diverse, and so prosperous.

Why is Cathy McLeod subverting democracy and human decency? Canadians are caring people by nature and want to help those in need to do well, and to make a contribution to our country. Harper’s legislation is offensive and must be stopped. Harper Conservatives, like Liberals before them, use omnibus bills to ram through changes to legislation without proper debate. The Harper government’s contempt for Parliament and democracy has

contribution that Canada can make? The Liberal Party of Canada believes our efforts are best devoted to the humanitarian side of the equation. Displaced Iraqis who have been forced from their homes at the hands of ISIL need our help. Canada is uniquely positioned to be a leader in the humanitarian efforts in this region. In addition, we can, and should, facilitate the resettlement of Iraqi refugees in Canada. We also have unique capabilities that should lead us to focus our time, personnel, and financial resources on noncombat roles such as strategic airlift, training and medical support.

We have repeatedly said there is a clear line between a non-combat and combat role in Iraq. If Prime Minister Stephen Harper wants to take Canada across that line, he must make the case to Canadians as to why this is a necessary step for our country. The Prime Minister did not make this case. For this reason, the Liberal Party opposed the government’s motion to go to war in Iraq. However, now that the decision has been made to send the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces into harm’s way, they have our – and all Canadians’ – full and unwavering support. he saddest manifestation of British Columbia’s modern democracy has produced its judgment, with the election of school trustees for the next four years. There are still independent, communityminded trustees, but mostly “boards of education” have become the neglected, exploited stepchild of B.C. politics. Teacher union locals and CUPEdominated “labour councils” organize candidate forums and ask most of the questions, often to former teachers holding and seeking school board seats. Unions finance the campaigns of those who pledge to act as a bullhorn for constant demands for more provincial money, and instruct their members to vote for what should be called the Conflict of Interest slate. This has been going on for so long in B.C. it is seen as normal. Trustees who most loudly plump for their union masters tend to win, thanks to low turnout. The public mostly doesn’t give a damn, since school property tax authority was centralized in Victoria many years ago, largely because of this special

The puppet role of some school trustees was evident in the recent teacher strike. When the province opted to pay parents for the disruption, there was a chorus of protest from those supposedly elected to represent the interests of parents and taxpayers. School tax rates are now set by cabinet order, and the B.C. Liberal government is considering a move to regulate local industrial taxes. (This would presumably be to keep union-influenced municipalities from trying to get too many golden eggs from those liquefied natural gas plants.) Would Education Minister Peter Fassbender and his team continue their remake by amalgamating or eliminating school boards? Not likely. With a rare teacher settlement in place, trustees will have less incentive to grandstand. And their meetings may become something more than union beef sessions. Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP officers responded to a report of a minivan running into the back of a school bus in the 5300 block of Highway 97 in Falkland at 4:20 p.m. “When our officers arrived, ambulance personnel were already on scene and a minivan was found in a ditch suffering significant front-end damage,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The driver of the minivan was pinned for a short period of time.” The school bus had reportedly just got on to the highway and was going at a slow rate of speed when it was rear-ended by the minivan, driven by a 58-year-old Falkland resident. The man was taken to VJH for observation. Molendyk said there were about 14 teenagers on the bus at the time of the accident, with one girl taken to hospital to be checked out after complaining of neck and back soreness. The other kids were fine, and were either on another bus or had been picked up by their parents when police arrived. The driver of the bus, a 59-year-old Armstrong man, was not injured.

The RCMP were first alerted to the damage at 5:39 a.m. Sunday when a caller reported seeing broken glass in the bus shelter at Fourth Avenue and Oliver Street. When police attended the scene they discovered glass all over the ground, but no item was recovered nearby that may have been used to break the glass. The bus shelter across the street did not appear to be damaged, however, subsequent investigation revealed other bus shelters throughout the city had all been damaged.

A helping hand for hospice

The South Cariboo Health Foundation (SCHF) recently presented a $35,000 cheque to the 100 Mile District Hospice Palliative Care Society. SCHF chair Mary Shennum says its relationship with the hospice society is closely tied, since they both support health and hospital patients, but they do have key differences in their functions. “Their responsibility is largely care of patients and their families and loved ones, so that is their focus. “They have 20-plus volunteers and they’ll have 30-50 clients they are looking after at any given time. So, they

Farmers’ Market open

Ken Alexander Free Press

Parkside Art Gallery is offering something new for 100 Mile House and area residents. Starting today (Nov. 13), there will be an indoor Farmers’ Market every Thursday at Parkside (401 Cedar Ave.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., until April 2015. Organizer Claudia Ring says she thought it would be a good idea to provide a venue for folks who regularly attend the summer Farmers’

Market on Birch Avenue. “It allows them to have the opportunity to make money year round, and people get to buy good food they get during the summer.” So far, Ring says she has four bakers signed up and another person who cooks food, including chili. She notes they all have the proper certification for selling their products. Any other vendors interested in joining Indoor Farmers’ Market can contact Claudia Ring at Parkside Art Gallery at 250-395-2021 and leave a message.

pretty good job” at this recently, for various reasons. “Hospice has a really important role in the community, and we

think this is a good organization that we want to throw our support behind.” In this case, the money came out of the SCHF general funding accounts and will be used for whatever the hospice needs, Shennum says, adding hospice has significant education needs and also supplies equipment. Hospice society secretary Caroline Sharpe says the money will support crucial volunteer training, ongoing education, such as webinars and seminars, and the purchase of important equipment. “We are exceedingly grateful for this donation because it will go a long way towards fulfilling our services.”

Christmas Helper Event Every year at this time, Royal LePage 100 Mile Realty has gratefully accepted donations of food and toys to be given to local organizations to parcel out to some of the less fortunate citizens of our area, and this year is no exception. In previous years we have collected thousands of dollars worth of food and toys from the public. Drop off your donations at our office, 96 Cariboo Highway, next to the Road Coach Inn or, again this year, The Bargain Shop! is helping by putting bins in their store to help collect items for distribution. We will make sure they get to a deserving family.

At 10 a.m. on Oct. 27, the Forest Grove Community Hall opened its doors to accommodate the South Cariboo Early Years Centre (SCEYC) travelling playgroup for the first time. The playgroup will return on the last Monday of the month courtesy of the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) in 100 Mile House. Early Years’ Centre co-ordinator Erica Henderson, CFEC executive director Lisa De Paoli and Kirsteen Wilson greeted parents

and youngsters warmly, were ready answer to all questions and invited all attendees to partake in the Wriggle & Shake fun, which was entertaining and educational at the same time. A crafts table, reading materials as well as general information and supplies were at hand, with snacks provided for everyone while a lively discussion got underway. The next open house will take place on Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon and all children up to six years and their parents are welcome to join in the fun. Seniors dinner All seniors (60-plus years) are invited to the annual seniors dinner at the Forest Grove Community Hall (4489 Eagle Creek Rd.) on Dec. 1, with doors opening at 4 p.m. and dinner served at 5. Free tickets can be

picked up at the Legion, general store and post office in Forest Grove, as well as the Canim Lake General Store. Important meeting Cariboo Regional District Area H Director Margo Wagner invites all residents to attend the next Forest Grove and District Recreation Society meeting at the community hall to discuss a possible increase of the parcel tax from $10.26 to a maximum of $15. This would provide surplus operating funds, which could help pay for urgently needed roof repairs. The meeting will take place on Dec, 2 at 7 p.m. Pampered Christmas The annual Christmas Sale is scheduled for Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 261-Forest Grove. Tables are available at

$10 and can be booked by calling Darlene Tindale at 250-397-0019, or by contacting the Legion at 250-397-2455.

100 MILE HOUSE • 250-395-5303 LARGE BREED MONTH! COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIP: Nutro Temperatures are dropping and the local lakes, ponds and waterways are just starting to freeze over. When walking with your dog please keep them on a leash around waterways if you are unsure of the safety of the ice. Animals don’t realize what “thin ice” is. Once they fall in, it is very difficult for them to climb out and hypothermia or drowning are very real and life-threatening dangers. Keep yourself and your dog safe! Over 50 per cent of ice related drownings involved an attempted rescue of another person or a dog. Once frozen lakes and ponds are safe to enjoy some winter fun please also remember that “ice skating” dogs are prone to injuries such as cruciate tears if allowed to “skate” with their humans. This is also true of icy walks.

Kristian Stead made a game and shut-out-saving stop in the final seconds of the final frame, while forward Stephen Egan fired home the game-winner earlier on at the end of the first period. There was little lull in end-to-end action between those two big plays, and even though the game finished a conservative 1-0 for the 100 Mile House Wranglers over the Sicamous Eagles, that Nov. 16 match-up was one of the most entertaining 60 minutes of the season, says Wranglers coach Dale Hladun. “Both goaltenders played very well. Stead was huge for us. There's a reason why he's among the top goalies in the league.” 100 Mile House (12-8-0-2) fired 30 shots on goal and Sicamous (13-11-1), on home ice, managed 24. Cole Zimmerman and Nick McCabe assisted on Egan's goal. Stead won star of the game. At the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Nov. 15, 100 Mile House trumped the Kelowna Chiefs 5-3 with 491 fans in attendance. Hladun says the Chiefs (8-13-2-1) are a better club than its record suggests, and the win was “a bit of bounce back after the goose egg we laid against North Okanagan” – a 4-2 loss to a last place team on Nov. 11. “I thought the guys responded well. We had a tough week of practices and dry land [training] to get mentally adjusted and prepared for the weekend.” Jayden Syrota, Austin Turner (2), McCabe and Zimmerman tallied goals for 100 Mile. Tyler Garcia (3), Nick Headrick, Brett Harris (3), Zimmerman, A. Turner and Devan Suidy earned assists. A. Turner won star of the game. Stead made 23 saves between the pipes. The Wranglers have seven wins, two losses and one overtime loss – 15 points – in the last 10 games, among the hottest records in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) in that stretch. Since the season started in September, Hladun has been saying he thinks this club has the skill to compete with the KIJHL's best. “I think it's as strong as any team I've ever coached, and as strong as any team in the league.” The Wranglers ride into Chase (7-10-2-4) on

MEN'S HOCKEY The Lac la Hache Tomahawks faced off in Williams Lake in Central Interior Hockey League play, Nov. 15. The East Divisionleading Williams Lake Stampeders (9-0) skated to a 9-5 win over the Tomahawks (2-4). Jordan Sellars, Wilfred Robbins, Francis Johnson, Brad Crump and Drew Rose scored for Lac la Hache. Lac la Hache hosts the Quesnel Kangaroos (5-4) at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena on Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

maintaining the trails, explains Pat Corbett, Hills Health Ranch president. “I've been a strong believer [in the reciprocal passes] going way back into the 1980s,” Corbett says. “And it was fully supported. I wasn't the only one with that view. I felt this was the proper way to posi-

New ski pass rules this season

Cross country skiers in this area can no longer enjoy the convenience of dual season passes. A recent announcement by the 100 Mile Nordics Ski Society, which maintains the trails at 99 Mile Hill, and the Hills Health Ranch, which maintains the trail system at 108 Mile

Ranch, states effective this season, passes sold at either location will only be valid for that location. For many years the Hills Health Ranch and Nordics sold season ski passes that were valid at both venues. “Unfortunately, we have been advised by Cross Country BC the

for our members,” the Nordics add. The Nordics' trail system operates solely on Crown land, while the 108 Mile Ranch trail system uses a combination of the Hills Health Ranch property, crown land and private property. Revenue from ski passes goes directly to covering the cost of

tion 100 Mile House within the global marketplace and it was best for the local residents as well.” However, this year, cross country skiers have to make a choice, he adds. “Do they want to ski the 108 trails or do they want to ski at 99 Mile? That's the core decision.”

A number of fun community drop in programs are open to the public in 100 Mile House throughout the week. Basketball (Monday), volleyball (Tuesday), indoor soccer (Wednesday) and badminton (Thursday) go at Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School. Pickle ball (Wednesday) plays at 100 Mile House Elementary School. The games run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. With a recreation pass the cost is $2.50 per drop in. Without one it's $3.50.

KIJHL HOCKEY The 100 Mile House Wranglers and Kamloops Storm are facing off at a neutral venue on Nov. 28, giving Williams Lake a taste of Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Cariboo Memorial Complex, located at 525 Proctor Street in Williams Lake.

Primal Electric ties, loses heartbreaker

100 Mile House peewee rep played two close games with Prince George

The South Cariboo Rec. Centre saw peewee rep hockey action when the Primal Electric Milers of 100 Mile House hosted Prince George, Nov. 15-16. The Milers played Prince George tight in both contests – tying the first game 4-4, while dropping a heartbreaker 7-5 on an empty net goal with 11 seconds left. Jayce Myers put Primal Electric on the board first, finding the back of the net in the second frame on Nov. 16. Robert Waldner and

Owen Pincott also potted goals in the middle period. The Milers had a 3-2 lead going into the third, and while Nate Wolstenholme added two goals, Prince George found the back of the net six times, including the emptynetter, in the final period for the win. Waldner (2), Wolstenholme, Colby Glenn, Myers and Sam Chabot tallied assists. On Nov. 15, Primal Electric played Prince George to a 4-4 tie. 100 Mile House scorers included Pincott, Cole Allan, Ethan

Sanders and Myers. Assists went to Sanders, Wolstenholme and Waldner.

Old Stars tourney shines again

For nearly 30 years the 100 Mile Old Stars Hockey Tournament has been a place where old school talent comes to shine. The 27th annual tournament saw 12 teams take the ice in three divisions at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in

100 Mile House, Nov. 7-9. Minus a short delay on Nov. 8 when a zamboni malfunctioned, everything from the refereeing to the dance and banquet was outstanding this year, says organizer Greg Aiken. “The Red Rock put on

an awesome meal at the dance [at the 100 Mile House Community Hall on Nov. 8]. Rob Fry did the music and it was great. It was a really good time.” A team from Merritt won the 55-plus division. A team from Salmon won the 45-plus

division. Red Rock, a 100 Mile House team, was victorious in the 35-plus division. Aiken says they're hoping to attract more teams from out of town next year. Heading into the tournament, Aiken said the event was all about having a good time, seeing old friends and teammates, while telling old lies and makw up new ones. ing w got w “Everybody's w something to brag w about, ” he jokes. “You'll

shoot a puck from the blue line that hits three guys and goes into the bottom of the net. But by the end of the dance night, after a couple of beers, it will be an endto-end rush, deking out the whole team, and putting the puck top corner.” A ladies hockey tournament was held simultaneously in Lac la w Hache. Teams from 100 w Mile House, Quesnel w w and Fort St. James hit w the ice.

Christmas musical set to entertain families

Tickets on sale now for “From Me To You: A Christmas Musical” Lovers of Christmas music, comedy and musical theatre are getting an early holiday gift this year, as a new show the whole family can enjoy is coming to 100 Mile House in early December. “From Me To You: A Christmas Musical” tells the story of one quirky, funny family, that breaks into festive songs, on the night before Christmas. The show is the creation of Nicole Weir, a local performer and hairdresser, and her family. The show also includes special guests: the Grinch, Santa Claus and gymnasts from the South Cariboo Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. There’s also a sing-a-long portion for the audience. “It’s not a typical Christmas concert,” Weir says. “I wanted to do a Christmas concert and had a lot of fun ideas. Fortunately, I have a family full of performers.” Of the characters, Weir explains: mom’s a little bit weird and flighty, and likes to break into song all the time. The teenage

daughter is, like, not impressed. The little brother is a brat, and dad is a funny guy, too. The show develops similar to a sitcom, while segueing into classic Christmas songs, Weir says. “It flows really beautifully. It’s something fun you can bring your family to.” Show dates are Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.; Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.; and Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., all at Martin Exeter Hall in 100 Mile House. Doors open 30 minutes before the show. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at Didi’s Boutique, Donex Pharmacy and Village Hair Studio on Birch Avenue in 100 Mile House. The show is being put on in partnership with the South Cariboo Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and Canadian Mental Health Association-South Cariboo Branch.

Breast exams available in 100 Mile

The Mobile Mammography Van will be at the Creekside Seniors Activity Centre at 501 Cedar Ave. in 100 Mile House from Nov. 27 to Dec. 2. Clients will be taken from 8:20 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., but they must book an appointment at 1-800-663-9203. When they show up at the van, they will have to produce their Care Card and photo ID. What is a mammogram Here is how to prepare for a mammogram, and what to expect during X-rays. Mammograms are X-rays of the breasts that are done in complete privacy by a specially trained female technologist. A screening mammogram consists of four images (two of each breast) that look for hidden cancer in women who are healthy (no symptoms) and have never had breast cancer. The Screening Mammography Program (SMP) of BC offers screening mammograms to eligible women in British Columbia. A diagnostic mammogram consists of additional images from several angles and is used for women who are experiencing breast symptoms (such as a lump, unusual nipple discharge or pain), women who have had breast cancer, and women with breast implants. Talk to your healthcare provider for more information.

Brian, David May 20, 1948 – Nov. 6, 2014

Words cannot describe the pain and sorrow I feel everyday from the tragic sudden loss of my friend, husband, protector. Brian was a very talented man who loved to share his knowledge to help his friends and neighbours. He took pride in everything he did, always working on another project. Making sure his home was comfortable, his landscaping perfect. He loved his dog Percy who would snuggle beside him in his chair. Brian was admired and respected by many. Forever in my heart, Kathy.

Local inductee to national hall of fame Bo Work honoured as motorcycle race mechanic, pioneer

Carole Rooney Free Press

T

he South Cariboo has a resident with a claim to fame that many folks may not know about. Bob “Bo” Work was recently inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame for his long and illustrious career in racing mechanics that brought about several wins at Daytona and a World Formula 750 Championship. At Daytona in the 1960s, Work and rider Yvon Du Hamel won both a first and a second place, and set a track record that still stands (on the oval) today – with their Yamaha motorbike reaching 242.8 km/h, or more than 150 mph. Work grew up in Vancouver, and was inducted into the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneer Society Hall of Fame in 2004. Both halls of fame noted his remarkable history in the event programmes handed out at his induction ceremonies. Work joined Trev Deeley and three other investors to become the first North American Yamaha distributor in 1962, which then set up dealerships across Canada. Soon after, he moved from his role as its Canadian service manager into its racing department. Work and du Hamel then became one of the most successful race teams in Canada, and on top of their success at Daytona, also won all but one 250cc race on the AMA National Circuit together during that decade. In 1972, Work hooked up with another young racer, Steve Baker, to form yet another incredible, groundeating team. In 1977, they became the first North Americans to win the World Formula 750 Championship. Work says that tour saw him and Baker on the race circuit oversees for

eight months against number 1 and 2 riders from across Europe. They also placed second in the 500cc class at the Worlds, won a first, second and a third at Daytona, and achieved many wins in CMA and AMA races across Canada and the United States. Work remained with Yamaha until 1981, during which time he set a record of wins by tuning up the rides for 18 motocross, four dirt track, two trials and 14 road racers. “For motorcycles, I have been in every state in the United States racing, every province in Canada and every country in Europe,” he explains. Work was also a champion North American race-car mechanic and has appeared in three movies as well as commercials. He is on a first-name basis with a number of famous racers, such as Mario Andretti and Rick Mears. Now retired, Work says he came to the South Cariboo in 2000, and then in 2008, got together with Jack and Donna Barnett to found the Hot July Nights Car & Bike Show event that still runs successfully each year. “I’ve been around cars and motorcycles since 1951. They hadn’t had a car show here for quite a few years ... so Jack and I took it on our own and restarted it.” The 2014 programme notes that as Yamaha’s race team manager, Work has been responsible for more than 40 Canadian championships, seven White trophies, three Bill Webster awards and close to 100 provincial championships. Despite all this history, Work is humble about being inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame amongst numerous other worthy individuals. “I just about fell over when I heard I was being inducted. I am very honoured to be in it.” A poster signed by both Work and Baker was auctioned off at the 2014 event in Edmonton for $1,200.

Bo Work was recently inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame for his amazing career in racing mechanics. He helped bring wins to racers Yvon Du Hamel and Steve Baker, including at Daytona, and partnered with Trev Deeley to import the first Yamaha motorcycles into Canada.

Again this Year

his star-studded fundraiser will not only light up the hospital and the community, it will brighten the faces of everyone using our medical facilities. Funds raised will be used to purchase medical equipment and enhance health care services for 100 Mile area residents.

This year we are raising funds for a much-needed instrument washer/sterilizer. Our current machine is showing its age and requires regular repairs. A new machine will provide clean and sterile instruments for use throughout the hospital, while using less water, less utilities and fewer chemicals.

Ask an Expert:

What do I need to know about taking care of snow on my roof? You have shoveled the driveway many times in your life- you know that snow needs to be cleared away so you can go about your daily life. Snow gets in the way. Snow and ice can be dangerous. But, did you know that snow and ice on your roof can be dangerous too? When a heavy snow falls, your roof and home may be at risk. Dangers of Snow on the Roof A heavy snowfall can cause damage to your home or even cause it to collapse. While this is not common, it is a concern for homeowners when the snow piles up and does not melt or fall off the roof.

How to Remove Rooftop Snow Safely The most important rule is to be cautious. There are various tools you can use to remove snow from your roof, depending on the type of roof your home has. How to Remove Snow from a Flat Roof Flat roofs are hard to keep clean, and the snow removal will require strength and some time. How to Remove Snow from a Sloped Roof

Dangers of Snow and Ice Removal

When you head to the roof, you want to pick the right tools for the job. Metal shovels will work, but plastic shovels are less likely to damage the shingles.

Climbing up on your roof to remove snow is very dangerous, but there are ways to handle it safely. It is always best to have a professional remove snow from a multistory home.

To make sure you do not damage the roof, try to remove the majority of the snow but leave about an inch of snow. It will melt when the sun comes up and keep you from scraping your shovel on the shingles.

If you need to remove snow from your home or another building, have someone else with you in case of emergency. Shoveling snow is a strenuous task, and the height and slope of the roof make it even more difficult. Also, the shingles on your roof could be damaged if you are not careful with your snow removal tools.

You can also find snow rakes that are designed to remove snow from the roof while you stand on the ground. This is a great option for some homes. Whatever you decide to do after a heavy snowfall, be careful.

The sound from the screaming engine, the Pirelli P-Zero tires squealing under acceleration or diving into each corner was a sensory overload. The most amazing, but unspectacular part of the trip was driving the Hellcat back to Washington, D.C. through heavy traffic on the highway and downtown core. As we pulled up the W Hotel, just a block from the Whitehouse, the 707 hp Hellcat returned 9.9L/100km. Nothing short of amazing considering the cars output, but it might come down to the 411 lb.-ft. the engine puts out at just 1,200 rpm, allowing it to loaf along effortlessly. This and the $64,495 price tag will get a lot of car fans sitting up and paying attention; the world’s fastest four-door family car is an amazing engineering marvel and the price is as jaw-dropping as the car itself.
