Mount Polley community meetings planned Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Two community meetings scheduled to update the public on the Mount Polley Mine breach are scheduled in the Cariboo region. The first takes place Sunday, Nov. 23 at the Likely community hall from 2 to 4 p.m. The second one will be on Monday, Nov. 24,
at the Cariboo Memorial Complex Gibraltar Room in Williams Lake from 7 to 9 p.m. Hosted by the Minister of Environment Mary Polak, along with Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes and Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett, both meetings are being billed as open houses to discuss the ongoing work and next steps to mitigate the breach
and environmental remediation. On Aug. 4, the tailings storage facility at the copper and gold mine gave way, releasing 24 million cubic metres of water and tailings into nearby Polley Lake, Hazeltine Creek, Quesnel Lake and Quesnel River. At both meetings there will be presentations by the Ministry of Environment and Mount Polley
Mine Corporation, while representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Interior Health and the Cariboo Regional District will be available to answer questions. A representative from Fisheries and Oceans Canada will attend the meeting in Williams Lake. Coffee and tea will be provided at both meetings.

Gentles in court Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The highly anticipated trial of Martin William Michael Gentles is scheduled to get underway in Williams Lake Supreme Court Monday. Several witnesses are expected to take the stand in what is expected to be a fourweek trial as Gentles defends the charges against him; including dangerous driving caus-
ing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, causing an accident resulting in bodily harm, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident. The charges stem from an incident that occurred more than two years ago on April 22, 2012 on Carson Drive in Williams Lake where

Both women were enrolled in the nursing program at Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake at the time. Gentles has selected to be tried by judge alone. He was 23 at the time when the incident occurred in 2012.
Emergency crews respond to a vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 20 and Hodgson Road Tuesday afternoon. For a short time Highway 20 was reduced to one lane of traffic as crews worked to clear the scene. There is no word on the condition of vehicle occupants.
Changes to liquor store hours slated for April BC Liquor Store to receive extended hours; allowed to open Sunday
Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Starting in April the BC Liquor Store in Williams Lake will open Sundays and extend its weekday hours, said manager Dan Davis following a provincial government announcement outlining changes to liquor sales in the province. April 1, 2015, will
mark the first day that grocery stores are allowed to sell liquor through the storewithin-a-store model and on that same day, restrictions will be lifted on BC Liquor Stores, allowing them to offer refrigeration and to stay open longer hours, including on Sundays. “Our store here is a major beer store for

The other is the anti-shingles vaccine which is recommended for all adults over 60 with no immune system problems. You may have to pay for it yourself although some private drug plans may cover it. Ferry cuts prove costly for Chilcotin Coast Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer An economic impact study released this week indicates ferry cuts have cost more than they saved in the Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast region. The study, commissioned by the West Chilcotin Tourism Association, showed in this first year alone, the cuts made to the Discovery Coast Passage route (Route 40) cost the region $3.3 million in lost economic activity and $3.9 million in lost tourism revenue. “That amount
doesn’t factor in another $870,000 that has not been collected in municipal, provincial and federal taxes for 2014,” said Beat Steiner, co-owner of the Tweedsmuir Park Lodge in the Bella Coola Valley. When the provincial government announced the closure of Route 40 it justified the cut, saying it would result in a savings of $725,000 a year. “The damage that’s been caused by closing the route has far surpassed that savings,” Steiner said, noting when the gov-
ernment was finalizing the ferry cuts, Steiner was in Europe promoting the area’s tourism. “We’ve had the rug pulled from under us and it’s been very disappointing,” he said, adding Bella Coola is at the end of a 450 kilometre dead end road now because with the ferry cuts there’s only one way in and one way out. NPD leader John Horgan criticized the Liberals, saying they promised to improve and sustain ferry services, but they didn’t bother to do an economic impact study
before cutting ferry routes. “The expectation of those people working to grow the economy on the North Island or in Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region had expectation the government would consult with them before taking reckless action that’s going to lead to a reduction in the ability to attract new customers and new revenues to their communities,” Horgan said. The report, Quesnel Lake Cloudiness at Lake Overturn, suggests when warmer surface waters be-
gin to cool and wind storms occur, it will be easier for sediments and turbid water sitting at the bottom of Quesnel Lake to move upwards. “Initially we expect this to be more prevalent in the area near Likely and then involving a greater portion of the West Arm,” a computer simulation diagram in the report notes.
It is also expected exchanges of water will take place within the main body of the lake, that clearer water will move from the eastern basin into the West Arm and a corresponding amount of turbid water will move east, although at very low turbidity levels. “By the middle of 2015, the cloudiness of the surface water
is expected to begin to subside and by the summer of 2015 conditions at the lake surface are expected to have returned to normal,” according to the report. The computer modelling also predicts rising turbidity levels for the Quesnel River in late November and December, that are expected to subside mid January.
Chilliwack, needed to be replaced, and the replacement cost on that vessel was $100 million. “Now, the amortization cost that rolls through on Ferries’ books is about $7 million per year, which would take the loss from the current $7.35 million up to about $14.5 million.” This was all to move about 500 or 600 vehicles on that straight shot, he added. I’ve been up there. We invested $100,000 through Destination B.C. to assist with marketing, and we’re going to continue to work with operators.”

What to do when the city of Williams Lake is cold His initials were JJP, and I knew absolutely nothing about him or Vietnam. It was the mid-1960s, and getting close to the holidays. My nose was supposedly buried in a schoolbook, but once in a while I would raise my sights and look at the news, or spend a dreamy day on a California beach. The war was in full swing; it had already blasted away for eight of its 18 years, and protesters were everywhere. I’m not much for fighting, or politics, but my mailbox that morning brought me a small surprise. It was a commercial advertising envelope, something like those we receive from the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

But this was different — an invitation to become personally involved in support of someone who might be suffering. Happy that it someone else and not me, I read on. For $4 I could support a captured soldier and receive a bracelet marked either MIA or POW (missing in action or pris-
oner of war). So I did. In a few weeks it came in the mail — small, made of cheap metal, with a name inscribed on it. It simply said John J Pitchford, and carried a date, Dec. 20, 1965 — the date his world caved in. Now, this was a pickle! Who was this fellow anyway? I knew nothing of him, and the Internet had scarcely been dreamt of. How is a person supposed to help someone they don’t know, have no access to, and will likely never meet? There was no address for his family, so I decided all I could do was pray. I wondered if those prayers went anywhere, or did any good, but pray I did, until many
years later I lost the crumpled metal in a move. And all was forgotten. More years passed. While seeking an army entrance test for one of my sons, the two of us walked into a serviceman’s office in Mississippi. The receptionist had the same last name as the one I had worn on my arm for years. Feeling a bit stupid, I asked if she knew someone named John Joseph Pitchford. Her eyes grew large, she asked how I knew that name, and the story tumbled out. Colonel J.J. Pitchford had been captured and suffered for years in POW camps, but returned to an exuberant welcome from his family and friends in Pensacola, Florida, and a highway named after him.
I had driven on it, and never noticed. Never met him. Never knew him. Never even saw a picture of him. Still haven’t. But in spite of all those years of impossibilities, he came home. Safe. Whole. That war is long over, but there are others. Folded hands are a good start, but perhaps we could unfold them for needy ones we haven’t even met. And if there isn’t someone to pray for, (JJP has gone to his rest), a cold Williams Lake is still here. Because the needs last far beyond December, even without a bracelet. Public left in dark on mine cleanup plan Editor: I am writing this letter to follow up on Bonnie Rolston’s letter of Nov 11, 2014. I commiserate and agree with her sentiments regarding the divisions within the community, since the effects of the Mount Polley dam breach, but what needs to be identified is the cause of these widely varied and obviously passionate opinions. Basically it comes down to a huge lack of trust in Imperial Metals (IMC) and both the provincial and federal governments, due in part to their reticence to provide full information and/or promised assistance in a timely and open manner. There is no doubt there is a lot going on at the mine site to remediate consequences of the dam breach, and that everyone is working very hard on this project. But in respect to the overall remediation of the tailings pond, Polley Lake, Hazeltine Creek and Quesnel Lake, where are they going, what do they need to do to get there, and what is the plan on how they will get there? Where is the draft comprehensive mitigation plans for review by the public, relevant past inspection documents, timely updates of mitigation efforts on-site including studies and plans related to reducing effects of the breach on the environment (i.e. stopping flow of all solids, not just 80 per cent, into Quesnel Lake), and timely distribution of monitoring and test results, such as WQ and bioassay data? Community meetings in Likely have spread out to six to eight week intervals and the weekly Ministry of Environment reports on the Imperial Metals website
have become exceedingly short on hard data, facts and interpretation. My observation is that the IMC management and scientific team is fully engaged and working at or beyond capacity, but that IMC has obviously limited the resources they are committing to the mitigation efforts at that level, as noted by the deficiencies listed above. They need to provide more capacity within this team. It seems to me at this point, quickly protecting the environment with the best technology available should be the highest priority. Quite a number of B.C. provincial politicians and senior ministry officials, right up to the Premier, were in Likely in the days immediately following the breach. They ensured the cleanup would be completed correctly and Likely would be supported. But in reality it appears all that hot air has wafted over to smooth concerns in Alaska and to promote business in China, leaving Likely in the lurch. It would also appear the two ministries (Environment and Mines) most directly involved in the Mount Polley operations and remediation also are suffering from lack of adequate resources. I do commend IMC in regards to their efforts to provide drinking water to those residents affected by the degradation of the water in Quesnel Lake. Prior to the breach Quesnel Lake water was very clear with a turbidity readings approaching zero. Because of the turbidity change, Interior Health should not be saying the Quesnel Lake water is drinkable. Just looking at the green/gray lake
water now certainly does not provide a sense of trust, particularly with the expectation the turbidity is likely to jump from the reported present four NTU or so to as high as 20 NTU (IMC, Nov. 14, 2014) over the next few months. The lack of active participation by DFO and Environment Canada Enforcement is also extremely obvious. What are they doing to ensure the flow of solids into Quesnel Lake is fully stopped in as short a time period as possible? The public needs to be educated on the breach remediation through full engagement of all parties, ensuring open, complete and transparent dissemination of information as discussed above. They need to provide more ca-
pacity within this team, and if it is a financial limitation. It seems to me at this point, quickly protecting the environment with the best technology available should be the highest priority compared to spending $18 million on providing improved shareholder value (stock buy back, Oct. 16, 2014). I fully supported the operation of Mount Polley before the breach, and I fully support their developing plans for expediting startup by temporarily bypassing the tailings pond. There are certainly synergies of operations and cash flow that will assist IMC in the remediation, as well as the obvious benefits to the workers and local economy. I would also like to again thank
all those volunteers in the community who jumped right in to handle the emergency response during the initial breach, as well as all volunteers who continue to work to improve the community during these difficult times. I fully expect Quesnel Lake and Likely will recover, and in the longer term Likely will continue to “… pull together as a family for the future of our children … and many generations to follow.” Doug Watt Likely resident and Quesnel Lake property owner - Not a Mount Polley employee, but still unemployed due to the breach.
Election prediction realized following Saturday’s vote One week ago today civic election candidates were a little nervous with only one day left before the election. Now it’s over, there are no trepidation trembles. Many were not surprised at the final results of the mayoralty race, although many I talked with just days before the election said it would be a race between Surinderpal Rathor and Walt Cobb. The results were tabulated on the computer and we didn’t have to wait long to find out who were the winners. In some ways the old ballot box by ballot box counting was slow but it did create some interesting emotions on election night as the contestants had some cheering and let downs

along the way to the final results. I was at Walt Cobb’s store awaiting the results with folks who had worked on his campaign or were strong supporters. At one point Walt disappeared into one of the old change booths in the former
men’s store to take a call where it would be quiet ... after all it was the Tribune calling. Seconds later Walt bounded out of the booth, jumped into the air with his arms above his head, yelling: “We won, we won, we won.” I have worked with Walt on all his campaigns since his previous mayor days and I have seen the many ups and some downs associated with his political career but I have never seen him so incredibly happy about a victory. Wished we could have recorded that moment. Ivan Bonnell came over to Walt’s celebration and there was some interesting discussions regarding the outcome of the election. When Walt was mayor previ-
ously in the horse and buggy age, Ivan and Scott Nelson were on his council. Congratulations to Walt on his victory and kudos to Kerry Cook for running a third time for mayor and her hard work and dedication to the city during her term. Also of course thanks to Surinderpal for his 21 years of being elected to city council. He worked very hard in his position for a long time. Walt didn’t waste much time getting back into the political machinations at city hall and said he will meet with each councillor prior to setting out the portfolio for each of them. Swearing in for the new council will be on Dec 2. Well done also to those neo-
phyte politicians elected to council for the first time. Jason Ryll Chamber of Commerce past president along with businessman Craig Smith, came just behind Scott Nelson who topped the councillor polls as I had predicted prior to the election. A big thanks to everyone who ran for mayor, council, regional district and school board. Way to go Steve Forseth on your regional district win. A round of applause for everyone who got out to vote and for those of you who couldn’t find the time to exercise your democratic right ... a big hiss boo. Residents protest during board meeting Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer 150 Mile House residents attended the Cariboo Regional District board meeting Friday to silently protest the activities of a neighbour on Valley Road. Outside in the hallway, members of the group alleged they are experiencing a loss of property values and are concerned about spills and damage to the creek — which will affect drinking water for cattle downstream. At a meeting on Nov. 7, neighbours told CRD director Joan Sorley about heavy truck traffic operating from the property in the middle of the night, and an increase of night-time logging-truck traffic along residential streets — including violations of road signs. Off-road vehicle registration underway Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer An insurance office in Williams Lake said it has seen about three or four people arriving each day to register off-road vehicles under the province’s new registration system since it kicked off Monday. “I had expected to see more, but it’s not mandatory until June
2, 2015,” Western Financial Group’s Sandy MacDonald told the Tribune Wednesday. A one-time combined plate and registration cost of $48 will reduce implementation costs and allow off-vehicle owners to register at any of the 900-plus ICBC insurance brokers in the province, the government said in a press release.
The government also said the changes will allow off-road vehicle operators greater access to highways, including the ability to cross a highway without having to obtain an operation permit if the crossing is controlled by a stop sign or traffic light. Falling Leaves About a month ago, the trees in our yard were in their ‘leaf falling’ stage. Fallen leaves covered the ground, some were still falling, and others were twirling in the slight breeze of the day. The next day, however, a wind storm came up and blew most of the leaves off the trees. I say ‘most’ because while about ninety percent blew off, the remaining ten percent seemed to be hanging on with desperation. No matter how the winds gusted, these leaves clung on to the branch with tenacity. Weeks later, after many wind and rain storms, they remained on the tops of the trees with a dogged determination to survive. It put me in mind of what the Bible says about the follower of Jesus: keep on keeping on! In the letters to the seven churches in Revelation, Jesus constantly tells them to hang on, to overcome, and to triumph over adversity. In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus talks about the different levels of acceptance of the truth of the gospel for life. Some hear the gospel but do not believe it. Others hear it but have no root; they rejoice in the gospel news of freedom but when times of testing come, they fall away.

BY GERRIT APPERLOO Others do well for a time, even in testing, but then the testing becomes too much and they too fall. It is only some who last, who remain firm in their faith till the end of their lives. When he was speaking about the end times and the tribulations, the testing which would come upon the world, Jesus said, “….he who stands firm till the end will be saved.” The true gospel never makes the claim that if you accept Jesus you will have a life of ease, with all your problems fading away. Instead, the gospel promise is that you will not have to face
the issues and problems of life on your own! You will have the “Strong One” walking beside you, carrying you through the most difficult times and helping you to overcome and walk in victory through them. Jesus said “Take my yoke upon you” - in other words, “walk with me, using my strength to help you”. Jude writes these words about Jesus and his followers: “To him who is able to keep you from falling….” Jesus is able to keep us from falling. We can cling to him, tenaciously, determinedly, with everything we have. He will help us do that if we call on him when we run out of strength. It is his grasp on us that allows us to endure and to overcome. The leaves on our trees refused to let the storms knock them off the tree; we need to make sure that the storms of life don’t pull us away from the vine from which we get our nourishment and strength – Jesus, the true vine. So call on him, call out to him. Seek him and all he has to offer you. Feel free to call one of the churches for help in coming to Jesus.

Lady Pirates of the Caribbean coming up With the Studio Theatre’s dinner theatre wrapping up this weekend, theatre lovers will be glad to know that another fun live stage event is on the horizon. The Maranatha Players are proudly presenting the musical Lady Pirates of the Caribbean during the first two weeks in December. As always the Maranatha Christian School players present a polished production with great singing and theatrics directed by Becky Strickland. Lady Pirates of the Caribbean was written by Craig Sodaro with music and lyrics by Bill Francouer. With lively songs, comic dance and plenty of action the play promises to be a “blast” for performers and audience alike as a band of lady pirates outthinks and outfights their male counterparts. Peter and Betty Turatus are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter, Ashlee Turatus, to Rob Hyde on Oct. 31, 2014. Yes, that was Halloween. This was just another event for the Turatus women, with the planning which began a year ago. They started with unique coffin invitations that Guillaume Bayle, Ashlee’s Rotary Exchange “brother” created. The hunt for the dress was an adventure, for the bride couldn’t decide if the dress should go with the theme or be traditionally timeless. Crystal, Ashlee’s sister, helped with the search and had to listen to all the things that Ashlee didn’t want in a dress. In the end the perfect dress was found by Ashlee’s godmother and aunt, Shirley. The discussion of the

An outdoor wood furnace requires cleaning at least once a month during the winter months and usually every couple of months in the spring, summer and fall. Regular cleaning will increase safety, improve combustion and decrease maintenance costs. Follow these simple instructions: • Take out all the large, partly burned pieces of wood from the furnace with your shovel. Set aside those that can still be burned for later use.

• Remove the embers piled inside the furnace and use the shovel to gather and dispose of the contents into your large metal container with the cover. You will want to place this container outdoors until the ashes have burned out completely before disposing.

fantasy. Ghosts were hung, forests appeared with air, and a candy cave for all was created as well as a play-land for the children. For it was to be a family affair. The ceremony was held at the Free Evangelical Church on 11th Avenue where Pastor (Bubba) Dan Smith officiated. Bubba brought jokes into the ceremony which made people laugh. The bride and groom walked down aisle to Heavy Metal Cannon in D and left to the Star Wars Theme song. Ashlee’s brother Matt and Rob’s brother-in-law, Rowan, held Lightsabers at the end of the hall for the bridal party to walk under. Now for the party. To sum it up, the father-of-the-bride gave the shortest fourworded speech in the history of wedding speeches but made up for it in his choice of the father/daughter dance. A presentation by Rob’s aunt Kathy was given from Grandma Hyde as she couldn’t attend. She sent herself in a picture with a variety of Halloween poses. Rob’s godfather, Ken presented him with a Haida Gwaii symbol necklace from his heritage. Rob’s sister, Marcie, gave an awesome speech roasting the

groom with anecdotes of what their future children will be called in school. Guests travelled for the event from Alberta, Prince George, Kamloops, various cities on the Coast, Nanaimo and Haida Gwaii and Rotary exchange student Guillaume Bayle even skyped in for the ceremony from France. As in any event that the Turatus family hosts, there are endless friends and family members who help to make the event happen. Without you all the day would not have been successful as it was. A special thank you to Dale, Pepper, Bonnie and the Lamberts. Also thank you to Randy Gertzen of Adventure Charters for the shuttle bus and the safe ride home for our guests. Lynden Grosso for providing the awesome music. Cowboy Christmas Concert line-up changed due to illness Alan Moberg who was originally scheduled to perform at the Museum of the Cariboo Chicotin’s 10th annual Cowboy Christmas Concert Saturday evening will be unable to attend due to illness. The country duo Leslie Ross and Jason Ruscheinsky from 100 Mile House will
perform in his place. They join cowboy poets Bruce Rolph and Jayden Stafford, and singer/songwriter and fiddler Wesley Hardisty in the concert taking place at 7 p.m. in the Gibraltar Room, Saturday, Nov. 22. The trade and craft fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring cowboy crafts and

Medieval Market features local musicians There will be 89 artists, artisans and food producers and growers in 79 booths, plus musicians, young actors, and more participating in the annual Medieval Market this weekend. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lake City Secondary Williams Lake Campus on Carson Drive. In addition to supporting artists, artisans, and growers the event raises funds for local students with the booth rentals, $3 admission fee. Gingerbread house decorating Of course we all know the Gingerbread Man ran away when the oven door opened, but maybe he wouldn’t have if he had a cozy home to run to! The Williams Lake SDA Church is sponsoring a Gingerbread House event on Dec. 7 with proceeds going toward Williams Lake Adventurers, a program designed to help young children develop well-rounded, responsible attributes. Reservations are needed by Dec. 1 while openings last. There is a choice of times on Dec. 7. Sessions will be held starting at 10:30 a.m., at 12:15 p.m., at 2 p.m. and again at 3:45 p.m. at Williams Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church, 782 Ninth Ave. North. The cost is $7. Of Gods and Men next up for film club Photo submitted
Krista Liebe Special to Tribune/Advisor The Williams Lake Film Club will be showing Of Gods and Men on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The film will be shown at the Gibraltar Room at the Cariboo Memorial Complex starting at 7 p.m. Back doors open at 6:30 p.m. Released in 2010 Of Gods and Men was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The language is French and Arabic, with English subtitles, the length is 122 minutes. It is a French film, the original title is Des Hommes et des Dieux. This film is based on true occurrences described in the book The Monks of Tibhirine: Faith, Love, and Terror in Algeria by John W. Kiser. It is a film about Christian-Muslim friendship in a remote community in Algeria’s Atlas Mountains in North Africa. This community was created during the Algerian war for independence when Algeria was bombed by the French and people fled to the protection of the monastery, a holy place where Christians sheltered them until they could build their own homes. Despite pleas in 1996 by both French and Algerian authorities to leave for

Help the Stampeders Stamp out Hunger The Williams Lake Stampeders hope to deliver truck loads of food to the Salvation Army Food Bank this Christmas season. Billed ‘Help the Stampeders Stamp Out Hunger,’ the program, in partnership with Heartland Toyota, is now in its second year following a successful debut. “Any fan who brings two non-perishable food items to our Saturday, Nov. 22, game against Terrace will receive half price on their ticket at the gate,” Williams Lake Stampeders sponsorship and marketing director Calvin Dubray said. Also, anyone who delivers a bag of food items to Heartland Toyota leading up to the game versus the River Kings will receive a free game ticket. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Moleschi, Canada, prepare for World Series Tournament a qualifier for 2016 Summer Olympics Williams Lake’s Kayla Moleschi and Team Canada’s Women’s Sevens rugby squad will take their first steps early next month in qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil. Moleschi, 24, and the team are currently in Vancouver as they prepare to depart next week for the upcoming Dubai Sevens, which begins Dec. 4. Team Canada head coach John Tait released the 12-player roster this week for the opening leg of the tournament — the first in this season’s Women’s Sevens World Series.
The top four teams at the end of this year’s tournament automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympics, and Tait said it’s extremely important Canada gets off to a good start in Dubai. He added the team will be looking to secure points early. “This season is all about qualifying,” Tait said. “We want to win an event and a series, but we’re focusing on getting the points needed to be top four at the end of the season. Williams Lake Minor Hockey hosts its annual Midget House Tournament at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex. On top of five Williams Lake teams competing, teams will be travelling from Houston, McBride, Smithers, Prince George and Kamloops. Williams Lake hockey player Colton Thomas played a big role in helping the Cariboo Cougars solidify the top spot in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League last weekend. Thomas scored once on Saturday and twice
on Sunday in 5-1 and 4-1 wins, respectively, over the second-place Vancouver Northwest Giants. Both of Thomas’s goals Sunday came in the second period during the game, hosted at the Kin 1 Arena in
Prince George. The wins give the Cougars a 15-2-1 record and a seven-point cushion over the Giants. Thomas broke a 1-1 tie at 4:45 of the second when he slid a shot past Giants’ goalie Beck

Sportsmen’s association votes to rejoin wildlife federation The Williams Lake Sportsmen’s Association took a members vote on Monday night to see if the club
would rejoin the British Columbia Wildlife Federation (BCWF). Out of 28 WLSA members that attend-
ed 26 voted to join the BCWF and two voted against, resulting in a 95 per cent in-favour vote.
The transition will take place Jan. 1, 2015. “They have a big voice, we don’t”
WLSA president Moe Monita told the Tribune last week prior to the vote. “They can tar-
get government and stakeholders about fish, wildlife, habitat and firearms in B.C.” Members of the
Williams Lake, the future is coming.
BCWF receive a monthly magazine, Outdoor Edge, and rejoining opens up several doors for the WLSA to take advantage of, Monita said, including a personalized identification card, discounted merchandise and services, club promotion and programs such as a B.C. National Archery in the Schools program, conservation and outdoor recreation education, Youth for Conservation, wetlands education and wilderness watch, to name a few. The WLSA had opted out of the BCWF for the past two years.

The Cariboo Canucks Hockey Club’s First Nations Hockey Tournament takes place Dec. 27-28 at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex. The tournament will feature competitive, recreational, 40plus masters and ladies’ divisions. Prize money will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams in the competitive division (eight teams), while T-shirts will be presented to winning teams in the other divisions. The tournament is non-contact in all divisions. First place in the competitive division will take home $3,000, while second and third place will win $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. Our Child & Youth Mental Health Program provides specialized mental health assessment and treatment services to children, youth and their families when the child or youth is experiencing serious emotional, psychological, or behavioural disorders. Staff within this program currently includes a Wellness Coordinator and two Development Clinicians, and we are seeking a Team Leader to further support and develop this program. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Team Leader will administer child and youth mental health services by providing direction, leadership and supervision to professional staff on the Child & Youth Mental Health team. In this role, you will have the authority, accountability and responsibility to plan, develop, manage, coordinate and evaluate the delivery of mental health services for Aboriginal children, youth and their families in Williams Lake and the surrounding area. November 19, 1913 - November 13, 2014 It is with great sadness that the family of Mildred Fredrickson announces her passing November 13, 2014 at the age of 100 years. Millie was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on November 19, 1913 to William and Annie Dennison (nee Brown). Her family moved often as her father worked for the railroad. They settled in Laidlaw, where she met and married Mel. They later moved to Hope, Kamloops and Prince George before settling at the Goat River near McBride. This was Millie’s favourite place to live, where she spent most of her time in the great outdoors. She later moved to Williams Lake at the age of 97. Millie was predeceased by her husband Melvin, sons Sidney and Russell, granddaughter Kathy, parents William and Annie and brothers Claude, George, Russell and Sidney. She is survived by her sons Dennis and George, granddaughters Kelley (Nick), Lani (Mark) and Leigh as well as many great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
