After being the first to bag a management animal, Nikita Dalke got the chance to hunt for a trophy, and she was successful once again. Dalke claimed an Aoudad sheep in the latest episode of Extreme Huntress, as she faces off against five other female competitors for the title. Dalke and her competitors filmed their experience at the 777 Ranch in Hondo, Texas over the summer. Episodes are being released on Sundays at www.extremehuntress.com. Each competitor was given the choice of a management animal and a trophy animal over the course of the six day hunting affair. Dalke chose the Aoudad—native to North Africa—because of it’s uniqueness “He looked pretty cool, they’re neat-looking animals and I really liked the looks of him. The ranch manager said he was one of the hardest ones to hunt on the ranch, but it was mainly looks that made me want to try,” Dalke said.

My recommendation right after that is to sit down and do our fiveyear strategic plan, and I think we’ll see that happen on the quicker side, so we can go right into budget process,” Graham said.

Jason Wheeldon had a target on his back on Wednesday at a monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting. Singled out as the chief turkey by Chamber vice president David Struthers, Wheeldon and the rest of the business community are gearing up for the annual Turkey Drive. The fundraiser, which goes towards Christmas hampers created by the Salvation Army and the Food Bank, is setting a target of roughly $64,000 to meet the need in Cranbrook. Chamber members are setting a goal of raising 35 per cent of that, as each hamper costs roughly $85. The fundraiser works on a pledge system, with turkeys at $20 a pop. Darrell Jones, president of Overwaitea Food Group, and the keynote speaker at Wednesday’s meeting, threw down the gauntlet, pledging 100 turkeys and challenging the other grocery companies to match it. “We on behalf of the

This is what makes our community a great place to be from. “ The Turkey Drive is set for Thursday, Dec. 4.

Residents of and visitors to the City of Cranbrook driving electric vehicles now have a place to charge up. Public Works installed an Evr-Green electric vehicle charging station on the northwest side of the Cranbrook Curling Club in October and it has been opera-
tional since. The charging unit is a 32 amp, 240 volt charging station that takes between 4 and 8 to fully charge a depleted electric vehicle battery, depending on the size of the battery. There is no charge to recharge any electric vehicle using the new charger.

A large group gathered outside city hall on Thursday morning to celebrate Métis Week. Local representatives from the city, schools and Métis Nation acknowledge the special proclamation, which proclaims Nov. 20 to 27 Métis Week. That falls a few days after Louis Riel Day, on Nov. 16. The proclamation and speeches were followed by two dances by the School District 5 Métis Jiggers. The dance were in honour of Louis Riel and Métis Week.

Tom Shypitka has also been a part of the process after spending the last few days emailing and thanking supporters. He’s had a few meetings with the new councillors and staff and is looking forward to getting down to work. “We talked the talk, now it’s time to walk the walk,” Shypitka said. “That’s the biggest challenge. We’re definitely not forgetting that this is an important part of Cranbrook’s history as far as change is con-
cerned and we have to address these issues immediately because four years will go real fast. “I think our first call of business will be getting councillors on the various committees and to perhaps caucus in early January to hammer out a budget and put our priorities in order.” Ron Popoff, Danielle Cardozo and Isaac Hockley will also take their place at the council table after being sworn in on Dec. 8.
“Thank you very much for coming on this historic event,” she said. Marilynn Tailor is the Kootenay Regional Director for MNBC. “We are so proud to see our flag flying here today,” Tailor said. “And I want to thank everybody who did so much work to bring this event about.” Mayor Wayne Stetski read the proclamation. He also thanked everyone for keeping the Métis culture alive and healthy in Cranbrook. “It takes a lot of work to make sure the light keeps
shining on the Métis Nation,” Stetski said. “It’s really important that people understand that Cranbrook is a multicultural place and they can celebrate Mets culture with great pride every year.” Marlin Ratch, president of the Rocky Mountain Métis Local, presented Mayor Stetski with a personal sash. Jason Tichauer, School District 5 Director, said the district is honoured to be part of the ceremony. He said there can’t be any discussion of the history or culture of the Canada without mention of the Métis Nation.

The event was organized by the Mount Baker Secondary School Wild Warriors. Colette Trudeau, of Métis Nation B.C. (MNBC), thanked everyone for coming out to the ceremony. “It’s really wonderful that your community is supporting Métis people and supporting the awareness,” Trudeau said. She noted that just last week she was in Vancouver raising the Métis flag as well. “I think it’s really wonderful that we’re having the opportunity to do the same thing across the province and in Cranbrook.
“They’re very skittish. They like to stay in thick stuff and if they hear a truck or people, they take off right away. The manager was with me on my hunt and when we were heading in there he said to be prepared for a 200-yard or more shot because that’s as close as you’ll get to them.” She was able to get her chance at the Aoudad after spending most of the day with competitor Erika Bergmark, who was on the lookout for a deer. After Bergmark was unsuccessful with her animal, the ranch manager suggested they head to another pasture that is frequented by the Aoudad. “We only had 20 minutes left of light. We drove into the area and he stopped and he
explained that it was a difficult animal and he was expecting a 200-yard or more shot,” said Dalke. In jeeps, they drove into the pasture and happened across a herd of Aoudad, but spooked them away. Dalke and the group retreated back and re-entered on foot. “I had to try to find them and between us and where they were, there was a big patch of trees,” Dalke said. “So I went around that, and then I decided to cut in and try to catch up to them.” Using the patch of trees and thick brush as cover, Dalke was able to sneak up to as close as 30 yards, where she was able to pick out the largest ram and make a perfect shot. Laws are in place to prevent the meat from crossing borders, but she plans to get a
Nikita Dalke wall-pedestal mount for the ram. Though it never made it onto the episode, Dalke raceived some pretty encouraging feedback from the ranch manager after the hunt. “Another thing they didn’t put in the episode was the ranch manager was hunting
with me and he said something to me that made me feel pretty good,” said Dalke. “He’s been running that ranch for decades and he said that was the best Aoudad hunt he’s ever been on. “That made me feel pretty proud.” Also as part of the episode, Christie Pisani bagged an impala with Kasi Geraci as a hunting partner. Margaret Botha had a good hunt with Amanda Caldwell, but was unable to find her Red Sheep. Next week, Dalke and her competitors will take on the challenge of simulating a charging Cape Buffalo using a 375 H&H rifle. To vote for Nikita Dalke, go to www.extremehuntress.com, click on the vote tab, where you can submit a vote by email.

As WildSafeBC Kimberley-Cranbrook wraps up its inaugural season, we leave you with a few last tips to help keep wildlife wild and communities safe this winter. Though the first snow may make you feel as though wildlife encounters in the backcountry may cease, that’s not the case! Bears are beginning to go into hibernation, but aren’t necessarily in their dens by the time the first snowflake falls. Many wildlife species are active year round, including deer, moose, and cougars. Don’t be complacent when you head out on the trails, be sure to travel in groups, make noise and carry bear spray. Heed trail warnings and avoid recreating in areas of recent bear or cougar sightings. Brush up on what to do when you encounter wildlife by visiting the species pages at www. wildsafebc.com. If you hear reports of predator sightings in or near your neighbourhood, ensure your pets’ safety by keeping them indoors at night. Always store pet food indoors so that it cannot be accessed by wildlife. If you do see a predator in town, be sure to report the occurrence to the Conservation Officer Service through their 24hour reporting line at 1 (877) 952.7277. If you’re speaking with your neighbours, let them know of the sighting so that they can ensure their household’s safety as well. WildSafeBC Kimberley-Cranbrook will return again in the spring of 2015. Until then, a heartfelt thank-you to everyone for doing their part to help reduce human-wildlife conflicts in the 2014 season.

t was going to be the job of a lifetime. The Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (Monumental Dictionary of Latin) began as a massive research project at Munich’s Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in 1894. Documenting and defining every single Latin word known to exist is no easy task; the Thesaurus will not be finished until 2050. On the outside, Suzanne Bach appeared to be the perfect person to work on it. Born in 1909, she spent her childhood reading and collecting books. She studied Romance Languages at University, earning her doctorate in 1932. She found Latin to be her calling, and was excited to be interviewed for a position at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae offices. In modern terms, she “nailed” the interview, having an equal if not more knowledge of Latin than any of those interviewing her. All that was on the outside. On the inside, Bach had Jewish blood in her veins, thus making her ineligible to work in Munich. In fact she was no longer welcome to work at any job in Germany. The heartbroken Bach quickly moved to France where she found work selling books for Librairie Droz, a publisher based in Switzerland. The pay was poor, so Bach began to supplement her income working as a tutor, a translator, and found some freelance work pricing rare books. But the inevitable caught up with her. With the Nazi invasion of France, Bach was sent to the Gurs concentration and internment camp. A Jewish refugee aid organization helped her escape from Gurs and travel to Marseille, then to Spain, Lisbon, and finally to Brazil. She arrived in Rio in May of 1941, just in time to give birth to a baby girl (father unknown). Accepting that Brazil would now be her home, the single mother found work as a bookstore clerk, and as a translator at a phar-

maceutical company. In 1946, with the war finally over, Bach was hired by the rare bookseller H.P Kraus, which enabled her to travel throughout Europe with her daughter. She returned to Rio in 1949, having saved just enough money to open her own bookstore, if only out of her living room. Susan Bach: Books From Brazil was an immediate success. Bach’s knowledge gained from her interrupted life became nothing but an asset. Harvard, Yale, Columbia, The British Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the University of Munich all became longtime customers of hers. She became known as a world expert on South American literature. 20 years later, in the mid 1970s, Bach became an expert in another field entirely. Through her contacts with universities and libraries in Germany, she discovered her experience was not unique. The University of Hamburg had established a research foundation to study artists in exile, and they were very much interested exiled booksellers. Bach began to meet and research other exiled booksellers, and she wrote numerous articles and a series of books on German Exile Literature (German Exilliteratur). She returned to Munich in 1997, where she passed away at age 88. Susan Bach: Books from Brazil is still in business today. Mile Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Interior 911 call-answer goes to E-Comm F o r t h e To w n s m a n
As of 10:33 a.m. Tuesday, 9-1-1 calls from the Central and Southern Interiors are being answered by E-Comm — British Columbia’s largest 9-1-1 public-safety answer point. The changeover to E-Comm will be transparent to residents, who should dial 9-1-1 as usual. Calls will be routed to the same local police, fire and ambulance dispatchers who currently dispatch first responders to emergency situations. After four months of collaborative technical and operational planning that included the
engineering, design and installation of new 9-1-1 infrastructure, the transfer of 9-1-1 services for the Central Okanagan, North Okanagan, Central Kootenay, Columbia-Shuswap, Okanagan-Similkameen, Thompson-Nicola, East Kootenay, Kootenay-Boundary and Squamish-Lillooet (North) regional districts occurred seamlessly. Representatives from the new service areas were onsite at E-Comm to witness the official cutover. “This is a significant event for all nine interior regional districts involved,” said Regional District of Central Okanagan Chair Robert
Hobson. “Public safety is always our top priority. E-Comm’s outstanding track record means residents will receive the same high-quality level of service they are accustomed to, but with added operational and technical benefits. These include a larger workforce to handle high call volume and increased security and resiliency.” Hobson added that there will also be significant cost savings for each of the regional districts. The approximately 230,000 emergency calls placed each year from the regional districts will now be routed to E-Comm, where
highly-trained 9-1-1 call-takers will quickly confirm which agency the caller requires and for which location. Police calls will then be transferred to the same dispatchers in Kelowna, fire calls will continue to be dispatched by centres in Cranbrook, the Fraser Valley, Kamloops, Kelowna, Surrey, Trail and Vernon while ambulance calls will continue to be managed by the BC Ambulance Service’s dispatch centre in Kamloops. Part of the preparations surrounding the transition included more than 240 test calls across all regional dis-
tricts. Geography familiarization was also a priority for E-Comm call-takers in the leadup to today, with the many geographical and other special attributes of the new service area being a focus of their training program, along
with the policies and procedures for individual agencies. “9-1-1 is a lifeline, which is why thorough preparation was our top priority for the transition,” said David Guscott, E-Comm President and CEO.
“We’re eager, and ready, to share our large team of experienced 9-1-1 staff, our technology and purpose-built facility with residents in the Central and Southern Interiors and we are proud to be their partners in public safety.”

Five popular sayings that aren’t true
F
rom time to time, I hear people make statements about the Christian faith as if they were true. They assume these statements are common wisdom. Let’s examine some of them a little more carefully. 1. “The Bible is the word of God.” It strikes me that neither the Bible nor the ancient creeds of the church talk about scripture as the “word of God.” What the Bible does say is that “all scripture is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16), but that’s not the same as saying it’s God’s word. “Inspired” comes from a Latin root which means “breathed into”. To say that scripture is inspired is to acknowledge that God breathes life into scripture; dead words become living truth as we are inspired. The gospel of John says that the Word is actually not a book, but a person — namely, Jesus: “In the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.” In other words, Christians believe that God is revealed to us primarily in a person, not in a static book. It’s an important distinction to make. 2. “God helps those who help themselves.” Every time I hear this, I cringe. The truth is that the Bible says exactly the opposite: we are to care for and look out for each other, and especially for those who cannot help themselves. Over and over again in the Old Testament, the people are urged to care for “the widow, the orphan, and the stranger within your gate.” (eg Deuteronomy 27:19) These three groups of people were the most vulnerable in ancient Israel and other ancient societies.
They cannot help themselves, which is why they need our care. This saying is usually attributed to Benjamin Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1757. A little further research discovered that the modern wording comes from Algernon Sydney, an English politician from the 17th century. Further research shows that this sentiment was already quite common in ancient Greek tragedies. 3. “Canada (or America) Rev. Yme is (or was) a Christian naWoensdregt tion.” This may be a wonderful story to tell about our origins and ourselves, but it has never been true. Greg Boyd points out in his book The Myth of a Christian Nation that if the US (and by extension, Canada) followed the principles of the kingdom of God, it would probably collapse. We’ve been killing people and stealing land since day one. We have been governed by self–interested and self–serving people who have exhibited all the triumphs and flaws of what it means to be human. Canada as a Christian nation never existed. 4. “When you die, your soul goes to heaven to be with God.” Many Christians believe that having the soul leave the body and go to heaven is the goal of Christian faith. I’ve written before that faith is not about what happens after we die, but about how we live on this earth. But the other part of this idea — that the soul leaves the body — isn’t from Christian faith. It comes from Plato, the Greek philosopher who thought that the physical realm was bad and the spiritual
realm was good. The early church condemned this way of thinking — called dualism — as heresy. The Bible tends to talk about the human person as a unity: body, soul, mind and strength. What happens in death is a mystery, but the one thing I’m pretty confident about is that this unity is not split into its constituent physical and spiritual parts. 5. “Jesus talked most often about hell and heaven.” In the gospels, Jesus uses words often translated as “hell” exactly eleven times. The word “heaven” shows up 123 times in the four gospels, but most of them come from Matthew who used “kingdom of heaven” as a synonym for what the other gospel writers call “kingdom of God.” When we look at “heaven” more carefully, we discover that Jesus never talks about heaven as a place where we go. Not once! As I’ve written before, Jesus didn’t’ focus on the afterlife. He talked about the kingdom of God (or the kingdom of heaven), which referred to his movement of love and justice, and what life would be like if God were truly in charge. Jesus was most concerned with how we treat one another in this world, how we live together in peace, and with that kind of distributive justice which ensures that all people share equally in the wealth of the universe. Jesus’ focus was intensely this–worldly. As the Great Commandment puts it, “Love God with all you are and love your neighbour as yourself.” Imagine what our world would be like if we were to take Jesus seriously. That’s work enough for all of us. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

little World War One history, if you please: The period between August 8, 1918, to November 11, 1918, in terms of the First World War is, from the Allied (us) viewpoint generally called the “Hundred Days Offensive.” From a Canadian viewpoint it is termed “Canada’s Hundred Days,” in reference to a series of attacks by the British First Army, of which the Canadian Corps played a substantial role. The Canadians, including the 7th Canadian (1st British Columbia) Battalion, fought a number of important battles in France including those of Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, and Mons, where they were fighting on the final day of the war. The Allied victories served to break the German Hindenburg Line of defense, (stretching approximately 150 km) and, thus forced the Germans to retreat from France completely, thereby bringing an end to the brutal, unwavering trench warfare to which both sides had been subjected for years. The Canadian Corps entry into the French city of Cambrai and beyond, in early October, 1918, compelled the German High Command to accept that they could do little but surrender, which they did of course, on November 11, 1918. Cranbrook boys were involved throughout the campaign in various regiments. In a letter to the Cranbrook Herald newspaper, written on October 14, 1918 (published Nov. 7) addressed to Mr. R.W. Edmundson of Cranbrook, James Lunn of the Mounted Rifles tells of being among the first to enter Cambrai. “It was some scrap and from where we are lying now we can hear them going at it … I sent you on a German belt which I got at Monchy: it will make a good razor strop: also a Fritzie [German] camouflaged helmet from Bourlon Wood. It is almost impossible to get a spiked helmet so I did the best I could. I hope they reach you; the helmet will make a good coal scuttle for Mrs. Edmundson … I met Tom Marshall and Bobby Brewer the other day, also Bert Murgatroyd. They are all well … Give all the boys my best wishes and I think I will soon be there to tell them the rest myself, as Fritzie is howling like hell now … Remember me to Lester Clapp … Tom Caven and Dave Spears, Balment and all the other boys.” Canada’s Hundred Days saw the Canadian boys in some fierce battles. This period accounts for nearly 20 per cent of

all Canadian casualties during the First World War. Lunn also refers to the Bourlon Wood, which was part of a singular campaign that included a clever and complex night crossing of the Canal du Nord in France, by the Canadian Engineering Corps, who constructed the bridges allowing the Canadian troops to cross during the night, taking the German defenders completely by surprise the following morning. The Germans were put into massive disarray and retreated so quickly that they left behind a great deal of weaponry, including ten field guns (cannons) captured by the 7th Battalion near Sains-les-Marquoin, possibly at the nearby hamlet of Haynecourt. One of these, a German 7.7cm. Feldkanone 16 n.A., serial number: 19241, which, on August 7, 1920, arrived in Cranbrook, British Columbia, as part of the Federal Government allotment of captured German weapons shared across the country. Known commonly as a “77mm whizz bang”, due to the sound of the shell in flight, it was formidable weapon on the battlefield. There is little doubt that this particular cannon and the others on the battlefield initially spelled destruction for the Canadian soldiers who finally si-
lenced it. To gain the enemies’ guns was, and is, considered a very noteworthy feat and to lose them is a source of great humiliation. There were a total of 398 large guns awarded across Canada, allotted according to the percentage of enlistments in each province and, then, according to the percentage of enlistments in each town or city. Ontario received 166; Quebec, 56; Manitoba, 45; British Columbia 35, and so on down the line to the Yukon, which received one. For a town the size of Cranbrook to receive such a trophy was a singular honour. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One. The captured German cannon has been on display in Cranbrook for almost a century, much of that time situated in a public place of honour. It appears that the Canadian Legion has been acting as caretaker of the gun on behalf of the City of Cranbrook for many years now. The Legion has moved it to at least four different locations over the decades, the most recent being the rear parking lot of the Heritage Inn. When the gun was first received it came with a letter to the City of Cranbrook from Arthur G. Doughty, Dominion Archivist, which stated,
in part: “These trophies, which have been declared the property of the people of Canada, are sent to you with the understanding that proper care will be taken of them and in taking them over, it is understood that you agree to this condition.” The Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire Memorial Fountain that graced Rotary Park for many years, created from funds donated by many of this community, now ignobly resides in the City Works yard. The captured German field gun sits in a parking lot. As John McCrae so memorably put it: …To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.” The words resonate meaningfully each year in the weeks leading up to the anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War on November 11. Perhaps, with Remembrance Day once again behind us, they are, for the rest of the year, nothing more than words from an old poem. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Nov. 14. After a strong October, the month of November has been drastically different for the Dynamiters. Kimberley finished October with a record of 6-4-0-2, paced by an offence that outscored opponents by a combined margin of 56 to 38 (4.67 to 3.16 per game). For comparison’s sake, the Nitros are 2-50-0 so far in November, with three games remaining on the schedule. With November winding down, Kimberley has been outscored by a combined margin of 28 to 18 (4.00 to 2.57 per game). “We’ve just got to bare down on our chances more,” Richter said of the downturn in offence. “A lot of times we kind of think it’s too easy. After tonight and the practice this week, we realize we need to focus and bare down on our chances.” The win pushed the Dynamiters back into second place in the competitive Eddie Mountain Division. The Fernie Ghostriders (16-4-0-1) continue to hold strong atop the division, while a mere two points separate second-place Kimberley and fourth-place Creston Valley (11-8-13) with the Golden Rockets (12-10-0-3) wedged in the middle. “When it comes down to it, we’ve still just got to win games,” Richter said of the divisional logjam. “It’s still early on in the season. We’re still progressing but it all comes down to February. “It obviously matters where we get into play-

We obviously want to have home advantage, but when it comes down to it, February is when it matters.” Kimberley face two important divisional tests beginning tonight when they travel to Golden to face the Rockets, before moving on to challenge the first-place Fernie Ghostriders Saturday night. “We need everybody to make good plays,” Bancks said. “It’s got to be a total team effort. We can’t wear Richter, Marchi, Klingspohn, guys like that, out. You need everybody going [this weekend].” In three games against the Rockets this season, the Dynamiters hold a 2-1-0-0 record. The two teams last met Nov. 1 in Kimberley, a 6-4 victory for the Nitros. The Nitros and Ghostriders have only met once this season, a 2-1 triumph on home ice for Fernie Nov. 7.

have him.” Richter hit on all of his coach’s talking points Thursday, including blocking a Braves point shot in the dying moments of the third period to help preserve his team’s 2-1 edge. Braves leading scorer Jonny Marzec took advantage of a giveaway deep in Kimberley territory late in the first period, cutting the Nitros lead to 2-1. Unfortunately for the visitors, that’s all they could muster Thursday night. Making his 12th appearance of the season, Dilauro turned in a stellar performance for the Braves, stopping 34 pucks and keeping his team in the game through the final 40 minutes. At the other end of the rink, Tyson Brouwer returned to the Dynamiters crease, making 20 saves for his 11th victory of the season. Dynamiters forward Brady Revie was ejected from the game late in the second period. No explanation was given for the misconduct handed down to the 18-year-old Cranbrook native and after the game, Bancks still wasn’t quite sure why Revie’s night ended early. “I believe he asked the referee where he was going for dinner after,” Bancks said with a laugh. While Richter tallied twice for the hosts, defenceman Trevor Van Steinburg earned two helpers along the way. After going pointless for four games (Oct. 31 to Nov. 8), Van Steinburg has settled in of late, registering four assists in four games since

The Kimberley Dynamiters brought a fivegame losing streak to an end with a 2-1 victory over the Spokane Braves Thursday night. “I think the fivegame losing streak helped us get some points across,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Backs Thursday night. “I thought [our team] did a great job [tonight]. I thought the forecheck was better. Our natural-zone forecheck was better and that’s what we were trying to accomplish.” Nitros captain Jason Richter led the way offensively, notching both goals for the hosts, who grabbed their first win since a 6-4 triumph over Golden Nov. 1. “It was huge,” Richter said Thursday night. “We’ve been a little bit down and we had a good practice this week. It really helped us out. Now going into Golden, we’ve finally got some confidence.” Both teams did all their scoring during the opening 20 minutes of play. Richter opened the festivities 2:10 into regulation with a power-play marker from high in the slot that beat Braves goaltender Trevor Dilauro glove side. Less than 10 minutes later, the Penticton native sent his 20th tally of the season to the back of the net, putting a little bit of heat on teammate Tyson Klingspohn for the team lead in the goal-scoring department. Klingspohn sits atop the league in goal-scoring with 21 markers, tied with Castlegar Rebels forward Bryan Lubin. “Every hockey team that is successful needs a Jason Richter,” Bancks said of his captain. “He is a guy who, when he is out there on the ice, he puts in such an effort -blocking shots, second effort everywhere, takes a hit. “Basically, he embarrasses guys into playing the way he plays. It’s pretty phenomenal. We’re very fortunate to

Ducks top Canucks in Kesler’s return to Vancouver Monte Ste wart Canadian Press
VANCOUVER Corey Perry’s scored the shootout winner as the Anaheim Ducks edged the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in NHL action Thursday night. Perry’s goal on Anaheim’s first shootout attempt was the only one the Ducks needed. They got another one from Jakob Silfverberg. Vancouver’s Radim Vrbata and Nick Bonino failed to score on their at-
tempts. The Ducks (12-4-5) earned their first win in five games while the Canucks lost for the second time in three contests. Anaheim also avenged a Nov. 9 home shootout loss to Vancouver. The Canucks (13-6-1) lost their first one-goal game this season. Bo Horvat, with his first NHL goal, Jannik Hansen and Radim Vrbata scored for the Canucks in regulation.
Andrew Cogliano, Ryan Getzlaf, and Matt Beleskey had the goals for the Ducks. Former Canucks centre Ryan Kesler played his first game in Vancouver since being traded to the Ducks. Fans showed little reaction at the start of the game as he was pictured on the scoreboard screen with the caption “Welcome back Ryan.” He was booed in the second period, overtime and the shootout.

Ice face tough weekend looking to climb Central Division standings Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
On the heels of a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the Medicine Hat Tigers Wednesday, the Kootenay Ice are intent on getting back into the win column this weekend, facing three games in three nights. “We have a big week,” said forward Tim Bozon after Wednesday’s loss. “It’s important that everybody gets their rest. It’s important that everybody comes back for practice [Thursday] ready to go for a big weekend. Friday, Saturday, Sunday is going to be a huge weekend.” The Kootenay Ice open the weekend Friday at 7 p.m. against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-12-3-1). If you include Wednesday’s setback, the Ice will have played four games in five nights after the weekend wraps up, traveling to Medicine Hat Saturday for a rematch against the Tigers (16-41-1) before returning home to host the Moose Jaw Warriors (9-10-2-1)

Nov. 15. “It’s a little bit of a weird game when we play against them,” Bozon said. “When we played them in Lethbridge, they had all five guys in the middle [of the ice]. “We have to keep it more simple and shoot the puck. OAKLAND, Calif. - Sio Moore sacked Alex Smith and started to celebrate in the Kansas City backfield with Oakland Raiders teammate Khalil Mack. The elaborate dance could be forgiven if the game had actually been over considering the Raiders hadn’t won a game in more than a year. The only problem was the game was still going and the Chiefs were at the line trying to run a fourth-down play. The Raiders were forced to call a timeout to stop the clock and then got one last stop, snapping a 16-game losing streak with a 24-20 victory over the Chiefs on Thursday night. “I don’t need any more of that,” safety Charles Woodson said. “I couldn’t believe it. I told them that was the first time I had ever seen somebody celebrate for

a whole 40-second clock. That was ridiculous, and they know it. I told Sio he’s lucky we got the win because we really probably would’ve had to fight.” The Raiders (1-10) were able to laugh about it because Justin Tuck alertly called timeout to prevent the Chiefs (7-4) from getting a free play off against a nine-man defence. But Moore knows it could have been a costly mistake. “I was so caught up in the moment, man,” Moore said. “That was an error I’ve got to make sure I clean up, because in another situation - in all seriousness - that can make it the difference and I’ve got to understand that.” After Smith threw an incomplete pass on fourth down, Derek Carr took a knee and the Raiders celebrated their first win in 368 days since beating Houston last Nov. 17.
Carr threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to James Jones with 1:42 remaining to give the Raiders the long-awaited win. “Hopefully there’s many more to come because I like this feeling better than the other one, that’s for sure,” Carr said. BIG PLAY MURRAY: Thirdstring running back Latavius Murray got a chance early in the game and made the most of it. He scored on an 11-yard run on second drive of the game and went 90 yards for a score on his next carry for the longest run by a Raiders running back since Bo Jackson had a 92-yarder against Cincinnati in 1989. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor had a 93-yard TD run last season against Pittsburgh. Murray’s 112 yards rushing on four carries were the most by any player since at least 1960 with five or fewer carries. Murray left the game with a concussion.

NEWS/features Bull River Shooters 2014 season ends with a bang Br adley Woods
Our final Silhouette rifle match for 2014 was held Saturday, Nov. 15, at our range near Ft. Steele. It was a great turnout for such a chilly but beautiful day. All shooters had a great time in what is becoming a favourite way to end the season. It is not shot like a normal match; targets are swapped around and the shooting instructions are messed with to give us a fun and humbling experience. Shooters are randomly put in teams and try for bragging rights. As an example, at one distance shooters may sit but must shoot from their opposite side with the opposite eye. And the 40-metre target, the body of which is about the size of a toonie, is put out at 100 metres We enjoy getting together and this day is good for a lot of laughs and embarrassing moments. After a fun afternoon we met at Frank’s Steak and Schnitzel House. What a feast and a great way to wind up our season. After dinner significant club members’ accomplishments are recognized. This year’s Top Gun was Rob McKeeman and what a year he had! Rob shot a 39 out of 40 in one match (a perfect score has only been shot once in Canada and less than a dozen times in North America) and also received his Grand Slam Pin. This means that in one class of rifle he has, over time, shot a perfect 10/10 in each of the four target shapes! Well done Rob! Our Top Junior was Kaitlyn Johnson who once again humbled us all. Top Lady was Trudy Phillips, who continues to get better and better. Ryan Mate was our Most Improved Shooter and in a recent match was automatically moved up a class because he shot a Master Class score. And finally Richard Carere was recognized with our Bigger and Better Award, which recognizes a member who has made a tremendous contribution to our club. Richard spearheaded the construction of our very stylish wheelchair accessible outhouse. 2014 was a banner year for the Bull River Shooters: we hosted the
BC Provincials for the second year in a row and in fact have been asked to host again in 2015 over the Victoria Day Long weekend. Our club is recognized provincially and nationally for our efforts and growth when other clubs are shrinking and struggling. We routinely have a number of junior and lady shooters which makes our club so much fun for families and friends. We are very thankful for the community support we receive and try to do our part by introducing others to what we believe is a great and safe recreation. For the second year running we have hosted a local Scouts Canada group and we go out of our way to help new shooters try their hand at competitive shooting. Our new season will get under way in March of 2015. Board members will be planning the new season over the coming months and all will be finalized at our AGM in February. At that time we set our match dates, work parties and all sorts of fun. Please watch for information in the New Year. It is very common to find some members practising on weekends through the winter so check it out. The fire will be going and the laughter will compete with the bangs. Membership fees for the BRSA are $90 (subject to revision at our AGM) for the year (April 1 ~ March 31). Additional dependant family members may join for $15 each, which covers insurance costs. In addition to insurance (which includes liability protection for members if ever involved in a shooting accident) and ongoing club expenses, dues cover your participation in 4 club matches, scheduled throughout the season. Juniors compete for free. Membership for those 65 years and up is $35 but does not include any match fees. Memberships can be purchased from Rob McKeeman at 250-426-2794. Memberships can also be purchased at any club match. For information about the BRSA please contact Rob as noted above. New members are always welcome!

College employee receives BCCAT Award For the Townsman
College of the Rockies’ Articulation Officer, Karen Langan has been awarded the BC Council on Admissions & Transfer (BCCAT) Rising Star award at their joint annual meeting on November 14. The Rising Star Award recognizes an individual who, while early on in her career, demonstrates exceptional leadership and accomplishment in the area of transfer and articulation within the BC Transfer System. To be eligible, the recipient must have worked in the area of articulation for five years or less. Since becoming articulation officer, Langan’s achievements include updating the College’s transfer credit policy, developing College-wide articulation procedures and policies, maintaining an online database of provincial and international block transfer agreements on the College website and setting up numerous tracking systems to ensure smooth transfer credit processes for students. Some of the policies and procedures developed by Langan at COTR have been shared across the BCCAT system. “I find my position as Articulation Officer at COTR to be very rewarding,” Langan explains. “In my role I am able to help support student mobility between institutions which, in turn, offers them more options for their educational pathways. To be recognized by my peers for this work is an honour.” Articulation involves comparing the content of courses offered at College of the Rockies with courses at other post-secondary institutions to determine transferability of courses or programs from one institution to another. Langan not only searches out opportunities for students to transfer into College of the Rockies programs but also finds other institutions for College of the Rockies students to transfer to if they wish to complete a credential not available at the College. Langan is well respected by her col-

Karen Langan leagues at the College, with Dean of Instruction Darrell Bethune saying, “Karen has been meticulous and zealous in her approach to ensuring College of the Rockies courses receive articulation. She is a valued colleague and worthy recipient of the BCCAT Rising Star Award. She has a rare ability to manage the many details of developing transfer agreements and within the College has shown tremendous teamwork in supporting
Cranbrook
the work for faculty, staff and administrators. Ultimately, students are the beneficiaries when they use the transfer agreements Karen has set up.” The BC Council on Admissions & Transfer (BCCAT) oversees the BC Transfer System, enabling important links between the BC post-secondary institutions, the education ministries, and the public and private education sectors.

Tough answers to tough questions Dear Wendy: I have seen your articles in the newspaper and I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me? Will I be reunited with my daughter in the near future? Will my ex-husband and I settle our proceeds from the sale of our house? Feeling Tortured Dear Feeling Tortured: I had a conversation with my guides about your issues and this is what I have discovered: Q. Will she be reunited with her daughter in 2014? A. No Q. Will she be talking to her daughter in 2015? A. Yes, but there will still be problems in your dealings with her. This relationship she wishes to embark on will not go smoothly and we checked until 2018 and still see no sign of improvement in this relationship. Q. Was she a good daughter to her mother? A. No. Q. When will she settle the sale of her house with her ex-husband? A. 2015 Q. Is he going to give her a rough time until the settlement of the house is complete? A. Yes, very much so. We advise this
woman to talk very little to this man. The reason for this is because all he wants to do with her is fight and stir trouble up in the family. He has a very cranky, mean disposition. Less talk on her part and more walking away from the chaos this man ensues would be a good policy to start. Anything you say to him will just be twisted and made into a lie. So save your breath and plan what you want to do with the rest of your life. On a personal note I think it’s time to let go and let God deal with these two relayou ASK WENDY tionships have. I don’t Wendy know why but my guides say that Evano you need to regain your strength. So I have decided to give you an angel prayer that will help you regain some of that strength. The first thing I want you to do is sit quietly and then say these words: I call on the dominions (they are a set of special angels) to bring me the angels that will help me accomplish my goals during this prayer session. Thank you for coming to help me today. (Then wait a moment and see if you can feel these angels coming down to help you.)
Now say these words next: I call on the virtues (these are another set of angels) to help me and give me the energy and strength and courage and motivation I need during this prayer session. Thank you for your help. (Then wait a moment and see if you can see this set of angels. If you can’t see them but you can feel them it works the same.) Now say this prayer as many times in a day as you wish. Angels of Power, Angels Divine, Reverse all Weakness, Let Strength be Mine. After you have said this prayer creatively visualize a big lion towering over you. See yourself with the strength of the king of the jungle. Right beside this huge lion see a tower of strength. End of session. We hope this prayer helps you I use it in my angel prayer classes a lot with great results. We in the prayer class can feel the strength within us return. If you wish us to pray for you then send me an email and we in our prayer session will only be to happy to help you at this time. Wendy For personal and over the phone readings contact Wendy @ 426-2127. Need my guides to answer some of your questions? E-mail me @wevano@shaw.ca

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might discover that a loved one seems to have blinders on, which prevents him or her from seeing others’ perspectives. Push a project to the finish line; you’ll want to free yourself up to enjoy the next few days. Tonight: Now the weekend begins. Christen it well. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Others will be seeking you out to share their thoughts. Play devil’s advocate, and go along as much as you can. You might be unusually busy or too focused on something else. A friend or loved one could become demanding; avoid this person for now. Tonight: Enjoy the evening. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) The best intentions could disappear as you become engrossed in what you consider to be a significant task. Know that, even with your superb gift of gab, you might not be able to convince anyone that your way is the right way. Tonight: Step
on the brakes. Slow down! CANCER (June 21-July 22) You could be obsessing about a new flame or perhaps a new job. With all the thoughts that keep entering your head, you might not be getting as much perspective on a situation as you would like. Find a friend who will be honest with you. Tonight: Let the fun begin. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might want to reconsider a personal matter with someone who has a long-term vision. You could bat around several ideas until you feel comfortable enough to act on one. Your positive attitude will help, no matter what you are up to. Tonight: Happiest at home. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You could be unusually quick to give someone a response. You might want to defer to others for now, especially if you are unsure about whether your reaction is likely to make any difference at all. A child or loved one could be easily irritated. Tonight: Playtime! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
Curb any possessiveness. You could be pushing others -- or one person in particular -away. Try to break this pattern, but at the same time, do whatever is needed to build yourself up. As a result, you could start rethinking your reactions more carefully. Tonight: Treat a friend. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your ear-to-ear smile could be the result of clearing the air. You have an excellent presence, and others will let you know they are impressed. You will receive your just rewards, which could include a pay raise or promotion. Tonight: Go for what you want. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Read between the lines with a loved one. Your instincts are likely to serve you well with a domestic issue. Avoid making excuses for spending more on a special item. Ask yourself whether your budget really can handle this purchase. Tonight: Be a little mysterious. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Others will deliver what you want. As of now, you are clear
about who your supporters are. Be aware of your observations when dealing with those in authority. A loved one will support you in a loving manner. Tonight: Just ask, and you shall receive. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Others often follow your lead, and today is no exception. Use care when loaning money or signing any financial agreements, as there could be a catch. Know that if someone hides important information from you, your anger is likely to emerge. Tonight: Till the wee hours. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might want to reach out to someone at a distance. Your motivation probably involves a need to clear the air with this person. What do you have to lose? Timing will be important. Look to later in the day, when you are more relaxed. Tonight: Let your imagination speak. BORN TODAY Actress Marlo Thomas (1937), actress Goldie Hawn (1945), football player Troy Aikman (1966)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Two years ago, at the age of 62, I was forced to take early retirement from my teaching job. My pension is miniscule, and despite trying to find full-time work, I have only been able to string together part-time jobs. I have been divorced for 20 years, so there is no one else in my life to depend on financially. My days are consumed with trying to make ends meet, and as a result, I have no time or money for a personal life. I can’t afford to travel, my grown children are busy with their own lives, and my friends have spouses or grandchildren who keep them occupied. I can’t even attend church, because I need to work on Sundays. I spend evenings, weekends and sometimes holidays alone, so I turn on the TV or radio to simulate human voices. I’m fit, intelligent and in good health. I want to know what I’m supposed to do with the rest of my life, because it appears I am going to spend it alone. How can I get out of this rut? -- Indy Dear Indy: Take some of that time spent in front of the TV and do something that doesn’t require money. Volunteer at your local hospital, library or veterans association. The Salvation Army welcomes volunteers on holidays. You might make some friends in the process, but regardless, instead of feeling lonely, you will be out helping others, and that will take your mind off of your problems and lift your spirits. Dear Annie: My sister has a friend whose son is getting married. The woman is also an acquaintance of mine, but I never hear from her, and I’ve not seen her son in three years. My mother received an invitation to the bridal shower, and my name was also listed on the envelope. My mother is on a fixed income, and we could not afford a gift, so we didn’t attend the shower. A couple of weeks later, a wedding invitation arrived with my mother’s and sister’s names on it. When I didn’t receive an invitation of my own, I assumed I was not invited. I didn’t give it another thought. Well, the friend called my mom, and I picked up the phone. She asked whether I was coming to the wedding, and I stammered and handed the phone to my mother, who said she was sorry but neither of us could make it. The friend then told my sister she was very hurt that I hadn’t responded. She said the reason I didn’t get an invitation was because she didn’t have my address, which is a load of baloney. She sent the shower invitation to me at my mother’s. Should I feel bad about not responding to a wedding I wasn’t invited to? I’ve thought about sending her a note of apology, but I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong. -Tired of the Drama Dear Tired: It sounds like this friend invited your mother, and when you picked up the phone, she felt obligated to say she intended to invite you as well. But you are right that she easily could have obtained your address from your sister or mother. No, you do not have to RSVP for a wedding you were not invited to. But it might help smooth over the hard feelings if you send a card to the bride and groom with your very best wishes. Dear Annie: As a recently retired physician, may I add to your advice to “Slowly Falling Out of Love”? A patient once came to me with severe fatigue and lassitude, saying, “I can barely put one foot in front of the other.” He turned out to be profoundly hypothyroid, and treatment with gradually increasing doses of thyroid medication gave him his life back. “Slowly’s” husband needs a complete medical evaluation by a thinking physician. -- Patricia Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Ten Reasons to Advertise on a Newspaper Website 1. Frequency: The online newspaper Web site user
accesses the Internet almost twice as much as the general user.
2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets. 3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach. 4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper
Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Fifty percent of online newspaper users have spent more than $500 online in the last six months, and 63 percent of online newspaper users prefer to find out about new products through the Internet.
5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web
content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixtytwo percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this.
6. Retailers prefer newspaper sites: Sixty-five percent of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.

7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products,” “Where I prefer to receive information about companies,” and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise.” At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.

10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America
You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.
3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.

4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.
250-426-5201 ext 208
5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.
6. Advertise to Generate Traffic. Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.
7. Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.
8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate. Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.
9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.

YOUR AD in the TOWNSMAN has staying power. has selling power!
With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.
