he cupboards are full but the bank account is bare this year, and that is a concern for the Bread of Life. “We’re high on donations of food, low on financial donations,” said Stacie Camponi, outgoing coordinator at the facility on Third Avenue

in south Port Alberni. The soup kitchen usually receives enough cash donations in November and December to carry them through the rest of the year. Right now they only have $10,000 in the bank, where they would normally have $15,000 or more. “We’re two-thirds behind where we need to be,” said new board member Dennis

Dalla-Vicenza. The Port Alberni Toy Run donated $1,000, the BOL’s annual Harvest Dinner raised another $2,000 and various individual donations totalling $1,000 have also come in. While there are no pressing capital projects aside from the kitchen exhaust fan that needs to be replaced, there are still fixed costs, said Dalla-Vicenza.

“If we don’t come up with $30,000 we don’t know what we’re going to do.” Darlene Crossley, who has operated Cornerstones secondhand store—attached to the Bread of Life— for the past seven years, said she hasn’t seen donations so low. “If we don’t get the donations we need the

soup kitchen will have to shut down. We run by the good graces of Port Alberni,” she said, adding she has faith in the community. “They always get things going. This is an amazing town.” Camponi said in the past eight months with the Bread of Life she has seen a decline in support, especially from some of the churches, which originally started the soup kitchen 30 years ago. “A lot of churches have been re-pastored. They were the ones that started the Bread of Life and a lot of them used to support us more.” There are more agencies that are distributing food in various ways in the Alberni Valley too, she added. The Bread of Life doesn’t distribute food hampers at any time of the year because other organizations, such as Ku-uus Crisis

Line Society and the Salvation Army with its food bank already provide that service. The Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul also have food services. “i think all the food organizations need to band together and say ‘how are we best

going to feed people in the Valley’,” she said. It costs an estimated $5 per patron per meal to feed the people who use the Bread of Life’s services, DallaVicenza said. There are three paid staff members: Crossley at Cornerstones,

cook Ken Dore and the coordinator. An average of 10 volunteers help prepare and serve each meal, and make sure things are cleaned up afterward. The Bread of Life saw an average of 65 patrons at each meal in October. Those numbers went as high as 130 on the days that temperatures dipped below zero. There are about 25 who show up for

cold breakfast every day (cereal, yogurt, doughnuts, etc.). Many of those patrons, like Tim Jones—who organizes volunteers at the Bread of Life—are longtime patrons. Jones has spent 19 years eating hot meals at the Bread of Life. He looks after the coffee station and cleans up as way of payment for his meal. “One of the reasons I volunteer here is it’s my way of paying back,” he said. Other patrons also volunteer or donate bits of cash throughout the year as they have it. When school is out, the soup kitchen sees more teenagers, especially in the morning because the breakfast programs at school aren’t available to them in the summer. The Bread of Life is not just about food, says Jones. “most of the people here are all regulars,” including a few who have been coming as long as he has, he said. “People need a place to go and enjoy each other’s company.” editor@albernivalleynews.com

Littlest donations help too

The innocent desire of a six-year-old girl to help people who are homeless has spurred her grandmother in Port Alberni to help the Bread of Life. Diana Smith’s grand-daughter, who lives in Nanaimo, became aware there are people who don’t have a place to live. “She wanted to invite the homeless people to live in her tree fort,” Smith relates. When that wasn’t an option she thought it would be a good idea to put food in Ziploc bags to distribute snacks to homeless people. That simple act had a ripple effect: Smith asked if Starbucks would sell her some disposable coffee cups for the Bread of Life, but they instead donated 600 cups. Tyler’s No Frills also donated items for meals at Bread of Life when Smith asked for a simple donation. “To think that this all began with one little girl and her heart for those in need.”

A Brighter Note

L

ast winter I convinced my husband to watch the premiere episode of a popular drama about an aristocratic family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. I’d been hearing good things about the British television series for years, and although it looked a bit stuffy, I felt curious enough to check it out. “Just one show,” I said, as we were preparing dinner. “Let’s see what all the fuss is about.” With no hockey games on that night, and the kids out at sleepovers, he agreed. “Okay, but it’s not called ‘Downtown Abbey’,” he said. “It’s Downton. There’s no extra w in there and

Petula Clark doesn’t sing the opening.” He was right. After watching the first installment of Downton Abbey we looked at one another quizzically. “Do you want to watch the second one?” he asked, relieved to discover a show we both liked. “Yes,” I replied enthusiastically. Once episode two ended, we immediately watched the third, the fourth, and then, dare I admit it, the fifth. Not only did I now understand what all the fuss was about, but I also experienced my first dose of bingewatching a TV show. An often criticized social trend, bingewatching is defined as viewing two to six episodes of the same program in one sitting. It’s something I couldn’t fathom doing until I easily did it

myself that night. We ended up taking in the rest of the first season and the subsequent two in a

We also count on educational talks and presentations by guest speakers, slide presenters and people who give us their time in various areas of our operation”, says Goddard. Recently, the Village hosted another traditional program, “An Evening of Fine Dining”, an event that aims to have each resident dine in a candlelit atmosphere with a family member or a friend. The dinner is possible thanks to Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and Fir Park kitchen staff. All and all, the Village has lots to offer to the seniors of this home by helping them to stay socially active and in close touch with their community.

Columnist admits to bingeing on (many) television series From / A3

When it was over we had to wait for the fourth season to be released. Unlike some of the new series that cater to this marathon mania by having their

entire season made available immediately, Downton Abbey only aired one episode per week. Suddenly, this typical way of watching TV that had been perfectly acceptable before wasn’t good enough. I decided to replace my newfound addiction with another great series. But I had to wonder: was this latest trend doing me harm? I could answer with a resounding no if I was on a treadmill

‘...was this latest trend doing me harm?’ or working out as I watched, but that never happened. I was always completely sedentary on our big comfy couch under a nice cosy blanket. And to top things off, I was often snacking at the same time to keep myself from falling asleep. “Make one of your giant salads,” my husband suggested after I griped about all the extra nighttime calories I was consuming. “That’ll help.” He was right again, it did. With that concern solved I then questioned if watching the shows back-toback was eliminating the anticipation element. It reminded me of that feeling of rushing through an amazing book only to get to the end and then wishing I’d taken more time between chapters to fully digest the words and savour the narrative.

I also worried about turning into a lazy couch potato who’d rather stay home watching TV than go out or socialize with friends. But, who was I kidding? I turned into something of an anti-social homebody years ago. Since getting hooked on Downton Abbey we have now bingewatched the entire series of Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Mad Men, Louie, and currently we’re in the middle of the Hamlet-inspired Sons of Anarchy. I’m not going to profess this habit has improved me as a person the way a deep reading of a literary masterpiece might. But I love the opportunity to end a busy day watching an incredibly well written story with a big bowl of salad. As for tonight, I plan to cosy up on the couch for an hour or two, and do exactly that. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com.
