Group continues goal to encourage women to enter politics BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

Elections results might now show it, but a new Women in Politics network has made inroads, according to co-founder Pat Bugera. Nanaimo voters elected two women to office on Nov. 15, maintaining the status quo despite an effort by Women in Politics to raise the profile of gender representation in local government and equip more women to run for office. Across 10 of B.C.’s largest municipalities, 40 per cent of those elected to council are women and female politicians take up half the seats in cities like Surrey, VancouWe are at the ver and Victoria. Nanaimo didn’t bottom of fare as well, with fewest number the pile when the of female candiit comes to dates vying for seats and one of provincial the lowest percentages of representastatistics in tion by women in the Nanaimo civic government, according to staarea. tistics compiled by University of B.C. doctoral candidate Grace Lore. Bugera is disappointed in the numbers, but said the group didn’t see a drop in the number of women elected and has been able to start conversation and momentum around the need for more women to get involved in politics. The group plans to keep people talking with a debriefing on the election this January and information sessions on politics. It could also take the conversation about women and politics Island-wide.

COINS FOR KIDS raises money for toy drive and boys and girls club. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

A penny saved might be a penny earned, but paying spare change forward through the News Bulletin’s annual Coins for Kids drive really counts when it comes to making kids’ lives a little better through the holiday season. Coins for Kids supports the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club and the

Great Nanaimo Toy Drive, which collects presents for children of underprivileged families to ensure every child up to age 16 has presents under the tree on Christmas morning. Carolyn Iles, toy drive spokeswoman, said the need continues to grow in Nanaimo each year. There were about 800 families that signed up for presents for about 1,500 children last year and early registrations this year indicate demand will be even greater for Christmas 2014. Coins for Kids helps purchase presents for teens, an age group that usually comes up shy on donations each year. “The contribution from Coins for

Kids last year was instrumental,” Iles said. “It comes at a time when we have to fill in those last-minute gaps and that enabled us to make that the age groups for which people have not donated as many as we need. We will be able to ensure that children of that age will receive gifts.” Families can register for the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive at University Village Square until Saturday (Nov. 29). Linda Janes, Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club south general manager, said Coins for Kids donations helps the organization supply children with warm clothing, food and toys through the winter. Royal LePage

Shelter Foundation Partnership between groups broadens help for transition houses Don Descoteau Black Press

Teamwork. It can be a powerful thing when the people and groups involved in a project or trying to achieve a common goal are all pulling in the same direction. An initiative launched by Country Grocer, in partnership with the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and Creekmore Coffee, sees these three groups working together to expand the reach of charity dollars provided to women’s shelters and transition houses on Vancouver Island. The month-long fundraiser combines people’s love of coffee; a distribution method and an opportunity to help fund services for women on the Island. Now until Dec. 13, $3 from every bag of Creekmore’s Coffee Country Roaster blend will be directly shared between 10 facilities in Island communities from Courtenay to Ucluelet to Greater Victoria. Bill Ethier, president and managing broker for Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, says providing financial assistance to transition houses is an extension of what agents do on a regular basis. He describes that by way of offering the history of the Foundation. That organization emerged from a national survey the company undertook with its agents in 1998, when it asked what types of charity or fundraising ideas realtors would be interested in contributing to as a group. “Homelessness rose to the top and the company began looking at it on a national level,” Ethier says. What came through in his conversations with agents on Vancouver Island was that the most important aspect of their job is to provide people with a home. Ideally, they hope those homes are filled with love and companionship, but that isn’t always the case, he says. “If a home isn’t happy, if there’s intimidation or abuse happening, the home isn’t happy anymore.”

The prevalence of family violence and abuse, not just in areas of the world where women are oppressed, but close to home, can be an eyeopener for people not exposed to such issues, Ethier says. “There is still that lack of respect for women, and the children are the innocent victims in all of this. They’re victims of a power struggle in the home,” he says. “This happens in our own backyard, not just in other parts of the world.” Greater Victoria Royal LePage agents and staff have worked with area transition houses for the past decade, via the Foundation. Looking at the scope of family violence and abuse, Ethier and other Royal LePage professionals pursued the idea of expanding the reach of their ongoing fundraising efforts. “With the Royal LePage offices themselves being located on the South Island, we’ve focused on four shelters. With the ability of Country Grocer to come on board, and Creekmore Coffee … we’re going to be able to raise more money as a group,” he says. “It’s an Island thing, it’s a national thing, it’s not just a Victoria thing.” Tammy Averill, marketing manager for Country Grocer, says it’s very rare to have three Island organizations come together working for one cause. “This is a new avenue for community involvement for Country Grocer,” she says. The chain had worked with Ethier on a previous unrelated campaign and didn’t hesitate when he asked them to get on board again, Averill says. Dave Creekmore, whose company has supplied Country Grocer for many years and does a lot of work within its community of Coombs and Parksville, is pleased Royal LePage would want to partner up with them on a local initiative. “This is a project that is good for everybody,” he says. “It’s nice to work Island-wide and do things on a grassroots level.”

“If a home isn’t happy, if there’s intimidation or abuse happening, the home isn’t happy anymore.”

Services available for women in crisis Nanaimo women fleeing abuse can turn to the Haven Society for security and support. Since incorporating as a non-profit organization in 1978, Haven Society’s mission has been to promote the integrity and safety of women, children, youth and families and the development of a respectful and healthy community. In 2013, the society saw roughly 3,500 women and children at its transition house. In the first six months of 2014, that number stands at 2,200 and executive director Anne Taylor expects that number to rise beyond the level of the previous year. From both years, approximately half of the people housed at the shelter are children, she said. As a leading anti-violence organization operating from feminist principles, Haven Society provides the community a range of services, public education and advocacy. The organization operates the Haven Transition House, Women’s Counselling, Community Victim’s Services Nanaimo, Children and Youth Who Witness Abuse, Outreach, and Haven Volunteer Program. The waitlists for many of those programs is increasing and so is the number of women in the shelter. Women are waiting up to a year to participate in counselling, while the waitlist for the Children Who Witness Abuse program is also approximately a year long. For more information, please visit www.havensociety.com or call community services during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 250-756-2452. A city councillor who is under review by Elections B.C. for social-media use on election day says she had no intention of breaking the rules. Elections B.C. is looking into a complaint against Coun. Diane Brennan and her use of social media on general election day – activity that’s banned under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act. According to a complaint made by Nanaimo resident Dominic Jones, Brennan posted to Twitter and Facebook on Nov. 15, despite new rules against election advertising. Under the act, which came into effect at the end of May, political hopefuls cannot post to YouTube, social media or Facebook group

the province will pay the City of Nanaimo just over $350,000 in property tax compensation this year. the B.C. government gives municipalities grants-in-lieu of property taxes each November. there will be $17.1 million distributed across the province and just over $350,000 for the City of Nanaimo covering services to government properties like the Nanaimo Correctional Centre and courthouse. the dollars will go into the city’s general revenue, according to Brian Clemens, the city’s director of finance.

sites on general election day and could face fines or imprisonment if convicted of failing to comply. In his letter to Elections B.C., Jones says he believes Brennan would have failed to secure sufficient votes to be elected if not for the election advertising, which he claims was “deliberate, campaign-oriented, calculated to reach electors at the most opportune times at voting places and conducted with demonstrable contempt for the rules.” “My real concern here was … we are talking about 100 votes and looking at social media activity that had a potential reach of over 4,300 people, and it’s on election day. To me this was highly material and needed to be brought to the attention of Elections B.C.,” said Jones, who considers it an unfair advantage over other candidates who refrained from social media activity. Brennan, however, says she didn’t know she couldn’t use social media and removed

the posts once informed. The tweets involved in the complaint include a message about a breakfast program she was working at with the hashtag nanelxn14, as well as an image of a vote poster. Elections B.C. had called her while she was deleting the messages, looking for compliance with the rules, and she told them they were being removed, she said. “The last thing I heard from them was that they were just looking for compliance and that I had done that,” said Brennan, who had “absolutely no intent to deliberately break the rules.” “I just look forward to the Elections B.C. making a determination so that we can put this to bed and get on with the business of the city.” It’s unknown when Elections B.C. will complete the review, but a spokeswoman for the authority says it will give its determination to both Brennan and Jones when done.

While B.C. Ferries has been profitable in its second quarter, fares won’t drop, according to the corporation’s CEO, who says the ferry system is saving money with an eye to the future. According to Mike Corrigan, president and CEO of B.C. Ferries, the corporation is in the black for the first half of the fiscal year but in the red for the second half. B.C. Ferries made net earnings of $76.4 million in May through June, according to financial results released Friday. For the six month period ending Sept. 30, the company earned $90.3 million. The company made a modest profit, but fare cuts aren’t coming, Corrigan said. “If we were taking a purely short-term approach, we could reduce fares but the challenge would be we wouldn’t able to invest in the future, borrow the money we need to be able to rebuild the assets and we have a $3 billion capital plan over the next 12 years,” Corrigan said. “If we’re taking a short-term approach, we could but we’re taking a long-term approach and saying we need to have retained earnings to be able to go to the capital markets and borrow the money we need to be able to keep the business sustainable over the long term,” he said. Corrigan said the $76.4 million was earned during one of B.C. Ferries’ busiest quarters of the year and considerable money is spent in the second half of the year on ship re-fits and maintenance. B.C. Ferries instituted ferry route adjustments earlier in the year, including ones to the Gabriola Island ferry, and according to Corrigan, it accounted for savings as well. He said B.C. Ferries had six per cent fewer sailings than for the same period in 2013, which led to a benefit from an operating cost standpoint. John Hodgkins, chairman of the ferry advisory committee for Gabriola Island, said a 3.9-per cent fare increase is coming for Gabriola residents in April and if performance continues to be profitable, he hopes the increase isn’t necessary. “The better performance in the second quarter, it’s pleasing and hopefully it will reduce the pressure on fares come next April, [but] I’m not holding my breath,” said Hodgkins. The three and six-month results for the same period in 2013 were $64.3 million and $68.6 million respectively. B.C. Ferries’ fiscal year ends March 31. For more information, please visit B.C. Ferries’ website at www.bcferries.com.

“I’m more enthused. I’m more dedicated to it. If one wants to look at and say you didn’t improve it, I disagree ... I think that we raised awareness,” Bugera said, adding they can’t let the momentum go. “We are at the bottom of the pile when it comes to provincial statistics in the Nanaimo area, but that doesn’t mean we don’t do anything about it.” The group, which started this year, reflects a national push for more female leaders. According to those involved in the local and national effort, women often need to be asked to get involved in politics, but citizens benefit from different leadership styles and perspectives when they do. percentage of women candidates and councillors elected Nov. 15 and incremental gains at the provincial and federal level, which she says is promising. But the results in Nanaimo also show the need for a network like Women in Politics, which she says creates a community that can facilitate women in politics getting elected and help some women make the choice to put their name on the ballot. Coun. Diane Brennan, who was re-elected, says women are “seriously underrepresented” and continue to be, but she also points out that Women in Politics held its meeting earlier this year. If it continues to work together, she hopes the next election sees more women, she said.

“There’s lots of people who it takes a couple of times to get elected, so I hope those women come back and know there is support for their campaigns and we’ll work with them to figure out ways for them to get more votes,”she said. Brennan plans to maintain her own contacts within the network and says she could also look to it for support during her term. Parents seek support for anti-bullying program By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Tree festival lights up mall I prOCEEdS gOiNg to B.C. Children’s hospital. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

The Nanaimo school district is expected to vote on whether to grant $15,000 to the district parents advisory council for a district-wide, antibullying campaign tomorrow night (Nov. 26). The school board’s education committee had previously heard a presentation from the advisory council regarding the campaign. It would include such items as pamphlets, other support materials and presentations for staff, students and their parents. The committee is recommending approval. “They’re looking for the funding in order to support guest speakers and distribution of the pamphlet and to support educational materials for the adults engaged in the program,” said Kim Howland, trustee and education committee chairwoman. She said the school district’s involvement will include looking for opportunities to allow the adults in the system to have the education and training that the advisory council would put on for parents and students. “[The advisory council] is working with the education partners to try and find those opportunities to jointly support the document and materials,” Howland said. If approved at that regular board meeting, the money would come from the operating budget for the 2014-15 school year. The Nanaimo parents advisory council did not respond to requests for comment. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Despite a switch of organizers and venues, the Festival of the Trees is still a go for 2014. Previous incarnations have seen trees displayed at Vancouver Island Conference Centre, benefitting Vancouver Island University, but 2014 festival trees can be viewed at Nanaimo North Town Centre. Proceeds for this year’s event will benefit B.C. Children’s Hospital, said Andrea van Rossum, committee co-chairwoman for Nanaimo Community for Kids, which is in support of the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. The university approached the committee stating it was no longer holding the event, as it was focusing on other fundraising efforts, according to van Rossum. She said the format varies from last year. Every tree is sponsored by a local group or company, who decorated the trees that will be on display until Jan. 4. For every $2 donation, the public can vote for their favourite, said van Rossum. Awards will be handed out for the best of the 21 trees on display. While B.C. Children’s Hospital is located in Vancouver, van Rossum said it’s important to note that children in Nanaimo and on the Island, benefit from its research and treatment.

The event sees organizations decorating trees and people voting and making a $2 donation, with proceeds going to B.C. Children’s Hospital. Trees will be on display until Jan. 4.

“There’s almost 600 families in Nanaimo that visit the hospital three times a year or more, and that isn’t counting the kids that have graduated from children’s and are now healthy adults,” van Rossum said. “Although the hospital is in Vancouver, it’s definitely a local fund-

raiser and we’re supporting our local families.” For more information, please call van Rossum at 250-714-1625, e-mail cfknanaimo@gmail.com or visit www.bcchf.ca/events/eventcalendar/festival-of-trees/ nanaimo.

Fire set to heat apartment sees firefighters called By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

Firefighters made an unexpected find when they responded to a fire in an apartment building on Townsite Road on the weekend. Nanaimo Fire Rescue was called out shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday to a possible structure fire at 571 Townsite Rd., but when crews arrived they found tenants in one of the building’s apartments had lit a fire in a bucket to warm up after the building’s heating system had apparently failed. “When crews got there the occupants were burning materials in the living room on the floor, in a ceramic type bucket, to produce heat,” said Capt. Ennis Mond, chief fire prevention officer. “Apparently there was no heat on in the building.” Mond said the scene was being investigated Monday morning to determine why the building allegedly had no heat or working smoke alarms. Mond said there was a real danger of asphyxiation from building a fire in a living room. Electrical inspectors were also sent in because other tenants had been using electric space heaters as their primary heat sources. The building’s owners live on the Lower Mainland, Mond said, and the address has been investigated previously for heating system failure issues. “We dealt with this issue in 2007,” Mond said. “It was turned over to the electrical safety branch. They went in and did their thing and that’s been about it.” The follow up action will be to have working smoke alarms installed in the building and to deal with any fire safety-related issues, Mond said. The building tenants, however, will have to go through the B.C. Residential Tenancy Office to address any additional problems.

EDITORIAL

Helping others worth our while

Those of us who are warm and cozy this season might consider those who are cold and hungry. It’s a time of year when many of us think about giving to others, and in many ways, it’s the most important time of year to do so. Wintertime isn’t necessarily a wonderland for everyone – it can be long, dark, chilly and lonely, and we would hate for anyone in our community to feel unlucky and unloved. We hope members of the community who have the means will support any or many of the charities that make a difference. A lot of us will have stockings that are overflowing come Christmas morning, and maybe between now and then, we can fill some other stockings. This cause is particularly important to us at the News Bulletin as we are in the midst of another Coins for Kids (formerly Pennies for Presents) fundraising campaign for the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive and the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club. Others have more immediate wants and needs – coats, blankets, warmth. The Salvation Army’s kettle campaign is the most visible Christmas charity every year and the dollars raised in Nanaimo stay in Nanaimo, helping provide food, clothing and shelter. The Hamperville program is a project of the Salvation Army and Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank, and the food and cash donations collected help make Christmas dinner possible for those who otherwise might not have enough to eat. If we have helped our friends and neighbours in Nanaimo, we might then look beyond our shores, and give to Operation Christmas Child’s shoebox campaign. There are countless causes, so many of them worthy, but we understand that there are countless dis`tractions at this time of year, too. We should enjoy the season, and its hustle and bustle and cheer. Maybe we will feel a little bit better after giving, sharing and helping. More importantly, we will know that someone else will feel a little bit better.

This winter, you can volunteer for the organization’s IceWatch and contribute to the scientific understanding of global warming. By recording the freeze and thaw dates of lakes and rivers, you’ll help monitor the effects of climate change on Canadian ecosystems. Canada has hundreds of citizen science programs. Although never a substitute for or rationale to cut science spending, these programs amplify and fill gaps in government- and university-led science. There’s something for every individual, every interest and every region of the country. Citizen science is a way to encourage us all to get outside and undertake meaningful activity to monitor and maintain our environment, improve scientific literacy and, best of all, be happier and healthier. www.davidsuzuki.org

Election results show distaste for arts funding To the Editor,

Re: Voters choose McKay for mayor’s chair, Nov. 18. A new Nanaimo city council has been elected to reel in all the careless spending of the last regime, among other important issues, but Coun. Diane Brennan seems to have missed this point. Just a few days after her eighth-place finish, the councillor is already talking about keeping the arts trough full with

public cash. She obviously needs to study the vote count and realize why she was reduced to eighth place and why some fellow cultural supporters were sent packing. Soon, I’m sure, any councillor who forges ahead to spend lots of the public’s tax money on ‘extra’ items will soon find themselves all alone and isolated at the new council table.

R.C. Stearman Nanaimo

Arts support a lasting gift To the Editor,

Re: Candidates critique theatre expansion, Nov. 4. The abilities to share goods and ideas were essential elements in the development of human society. The most impressive, ancient cave paintings could be created because the prehistoric hunters taxed themselves to feed the artists.

To cultivate culture through community taxes is desirable, legitimate and timehonoured practice. Supporting local, innovative theatre means willingness to enrich the life of our community and presenting the lasting gift of human collaboration for the generations to come.

Lidia Dramowicz Ladysmith

Cedar voters get mixed message To the Editor,

Re: School board sees seven new trustees elected to office, Nov. 18. Reading the front page of your Nov. 18 issue was a good laugh for me, as I don’t live in Cedar and have no grandchildren. But I’m sure it was a cry for the trusting souls who voted for candidates representing the Save Cedar Schools coalition. No sooner are the ballots counted, they take a 180 on the issue. Definitely politician material here – say one thing and then support the complete opposite.

Voting results come in at the Shaw Auditorium on election night earlier this month.

Voters are informed, but they’re turned off To the Editor,

Re: Voter turnout will never meet expectations, Opinion, Nov. 18. This column on low voter turnout being a function of voters being distracted in the information age misses the mark. Information actually better informs voters on the issues and candidates. By blaming the amount of information, the writer takes politicians off the hook and shifts the blame to the voter. But look at Lantzville, for instance, which logged 50 per cent voter turnout. Given that politicians pushed through a water deal without

public consultation, is it any wonder 50 per cent of voters found something better to do on election night? The information age simply makes it easier for voters to see through the smoke and mirrors. What’s needed is a different system of accountability where politicians can be held to task if they fail to follow through on the very promises that got them elected. Then voters may feel that someone is listening and that their votes actually matter. The information age is part of the solution, not the problem.

Even rock bands like The Trews have heroes I

THE TREWS perform new music at the Port Theatre tonight.

I think that song has become an outlet for grief in moments like that.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

W

hen The Trews bandmates and brothers John-Angus and Colin MacDonald began writing the song Highway of Heroes, they had no idea just how powerful it would become. Since being released nearly five years ago, Highway of Heroes has grown from just a song to a patriotic remembrance of fallen Canadian soldiers. “That song went from being an idea in a jam space between my brother and I, to what it has become and in those moments I am humbled by it,” John-Angus MacDonald said. Highway of Heroes was written in honour of Canadian Armed Forces Capt. Nichola Goddard, who became the first female killed during the War in Afghanistan in 2006. The song takes its name from a stretch of Highway 401 in Ontario named ‘The Highway of Heroes’. “She’s [Goddard] from Antigonish, a little town where I grew up ... My mom was her teacher,” MacDonald said. Tonight (Nov. 25) The Trews will be performing at the Port Theatre. Their show is part of Got Pop? Concerts’ 10th anniversary celebration. “We love the Port Theatre,” MacDonald said. “I think this will be our third or maybe even fourth time playing there. It’s always a great show. The fans are always really enthusiastic and we’re playing really well because we’re jacked about the new record.” In April, the Nova Scotia band released its latest

record titled The Trews. “It’s strong stuff, we really focused on the writing aspect of things way before we set into the studio,” MacDonald said.“We put the onus on ourselves to deliver some great songs.” In order to pay for the album, The Trews turned to PledgeMusic.com, a crowdsourcing website that allows users to donate to various music projects and receive prizes in return. The Trews offered their fans everything from free downloads of the new record, to Skype calls and even four-on-four hockey games. “We only did two of those [hockey games], but man that is fun,” MacDonald said. “I

were preparing to play two shows in downtown Ottawa when they suddenly found themselves under lockdown. “We were scheduled to play two nights at a club called Mavericks,” MacDonald said. The band would later learn that they were under lockdown because of the shooting that took place on Parliament Hill and at National War Memorial and cost Canadian Armed Forces Cpl. Nathan Cirillo his life. “The place where he [Cirillo] was shot, the memorial, is in view of the club.” The following morning they were suppose to appear on a television program in Ottawa to promote their new record, but instead they performed Highway of Heroes to honour Cirillo. “Everybody stood as if the anthem were playing or something. All the cameramen were standing still and watching and there were the hosts and they were kind of crying,” MacDonald said. “The moment was profound and people were in such shock and people were still grieving and I think it was just an outlet. I think that song has become an outlet for grief in moments like that.” The Trews perform with The Glorious Sons at the Port Theatre tonight at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 to $35. Singer gets seniors moving

ANDY MCCORMACK regularly performs popular cover songs to seniors throughout Nanaimo. By NicholaS PeScod The News BulleTiN

In 1988, Andy McCormack was 23-years-old when he walked into a senior citizens facility and started playing music. “It was like a calling,” McCormack told. “I truly heard a voice that said ‘You gotta go hangout with the seniors.’” Since then McCormack has been singing popular cover tunes to seniors throughout Nanaimo and across Vancouver Island. “The joy I get is making that connection and seeing people move and having fun,” McCormack explained. McCormack, who often performs to seniors at Dufferin Place, sings a wide number of cover songs from more modern artists such

as Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young. He said today’s seniors are more interested in hearing music from their generation than songs such as “You Are My Sunshine.” “When I first saw the response by seniors to Rock N Roll I thought that this has not been done by entertainers that have come into seniors homes before,” McCormack explained. “Usually it is My Bonnie or You Are My Sunshine.” McCormack, who once opened for the Barenaked Ladies, said that he enjoys the interaction he has with seniors. “If I can make that connection and get them up and moving then that brings me a lot of joy,” he said. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Big plays put Bulldogs in semifinals I BARSBY DEFEATS Seaquam 27-24 on late touchdown run. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Barsby Bulldogs not only won a playoff football game, they found an identity at the same time. “We’re a bunch of scrappers,” said Rob Stevenson, the team’s coach. “We won’t quit and we don’t mind the taste of our own blood.” John Barsby Secondary School’s AA varsity football team defeated the Seaquam Seahawks 27-24 on Saturday at Merle Logan Field to advance to the provincial semifinals. “All of us were dead after the game. We had left our whole body on that field,” said Cole Virtanen, Bulldogs running back. The Seahawks put up much more of a fight than expected against the favoured ’Dawgs. Barsby needed a late touchdown to surge ahead, then a defensive stop to protect its margin of victory. “We rallied together,” Virtanen said. “As a team, we were able to focus for one goal. We all knew what we needed to do, so we just got it done.” The coach liked how his players were able to handle the game’s momentum swings and bounce back up on their feet. “We didn’t falter; we stayed true to ourselves, who we are, how we play…” Stevenson said. “We were able to execute the plays that we run over and over and over again at 6 a.m. It took us down to the endzone and we got in there and defensively we

VIU’s women were 61-44 winners against CBC and defeated KPU 57-35. Matt Kuzminski, coach of the Mariners men, said his team played a “pretty good all-around game” on Friday, but came out flat the following afternoon and needed a good second half to pull away for another win. On Saturday, Stewart scored 20, Parker had 17 and Jason Fortin had 16 points and 13 boards. Kuzminski has been pleased with the play of guys coming off the bench. “These guys have shown that they’re able to step up and play well, make good decisions and make some plays in the game,” he said. For VIU’s women, Sienna Pollard led the team Friday with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jenna Carver had 11 points and 10 boards. The next night, Pollard had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Carver had 13 points and 12 boards. Maiden brews on tap by end of January From /28

“There’s a great demand,” said Kevin Ward, head brewer. “We’re sort of spreading our wings in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland as well.” The extra capacity will hopefully also allow the brewery to pursue production of additional flavours as well as unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated beers. The brewery currently produces Porter, Scotch Ale, Black and Tan among other brews and uses art-

work produced by local artists and photographers for its labelling. Wolf Brewery had to wait a few months for its order to be filled, Lewis said, but the brewery wanted to deal with a B.C. firm rather than farming the work out to an

overseas producer. The shipment was further delayed in September when the brewery wasn’t ready to receive it because of renovations to the portion of the building the brewery has expanded into, which included jack-hammering up the building’s concrete floor to install new water and sewerage lines. The brewery is waiting on a second shipment of equipment from Ripley Stainless to arrive next week so workers can complete the final assembly and start getting

the system up and running. Ward said when the entire system is functioning, it will offer greater efficiency and the brewery could produce up to three brews every 24 hours. The maiden brew from Wolf Brewery’s expansion should be on tap by the end of January. “It’s a big expansion for us and it’s a huge investment that we’ve done,” said Ward. “We’re all pretty excited about it down here.”
